KK I am guessing most people here don't like jazz... or at least can not really find japanese jazz acts. Thats cool. I myself have trouble finding jazz I like from japanese sources, but I do know some, and I bet you do too... if you clicked on this thread.
Now I'd love for this to be a thread for the discovery of japanese jazz acts, including pro, indie, amateur, old, new, and various genres of jazz, if you can squeeze a jazz tag on it, and a person of japanese origin made it, throw it in this thread (^_^).
You can fanboy in this thread, you can post downloads in this thread, its all good. Although I would prefer if you had only japanese lyrics if possible, does not have to be a japanese composition tho... shiina ringo did a great example of this...
French Title- Les Feuilles Mortes
Languages subg french + japanese
Song Title - 枯葉
But if they use english lyrics , please just state it when you mention them, most artists sing in at least 2 languages, but just mention if its predominately english.
Japan has a high amount of fusion stuff so stuff like shibuya-kei is more than okay, as its heavily jazz inspired. Your lounge stuff is cool as well (nakata yasukata's early work comes to mind, although we can be lazy and just call it shibuya-kei too).PE'z is on their own shit fusion wise... Your latin jazz (bossa, salsa, samba) is great as well. Anime and Video game music has fucktons of jazz. Ambient jazz (yoko kanno's cowboy bebop comes to mind), is great... get the picture? Any jazz as long as it from a j-person.
Now I guess I'll start off by naming all the artists I know.
Hiromi (1 word, BEAST!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!) jazz pianist
Shiina Ringo & Tokyo Jihen (literal godess... this woman is badass and was my first j-jazz musican besides VGM and Anime composers)
Nakata Yasukata and the acts he produced back in the day (of perfume producers fame) composer
Orange Pekoe (kinda straight up jazz ... which is a bit rare in artists these days) jazz duo
Immigrant Bossa Band (Authentic bossa nova and samba, male vocals, highly recommended)
PE'z (batshit jazz, must hear to understand, lol) band
Jazztroniki (a jazzy dance music guy) composer
Soil and pimp sessions (a brassy jazz band) band
Appa (leader is shiina's current pianist) composer / vocalist
Ryuichi Sakamoto (of YMO fame, you owe this man a bj and you don't even know it yet...) composer / singer
Junko Iwao (anime on Bossa)
Yoko Kanno (done vgm, anime, is a pianist, sings, does it all) composer
Shinkichi Mitsumune (shoujou kakumei utena and rozen maiden fame) composer
Makoto Yoshimori (from durarara and bacano fame) composer
Michiru Yamane (of castlevania fame) composer
Koji Kondo (of nintendo fame... a living god...)
This is just a list from the top of my head... I'll think of more later. I'm just setting the tone for the thread. I will have to come back later with uploads, but I'll go and find youtubage of these artists.
I implore you, please if you think your artist has a smidgen of jazz in them, post it here, even if its just 1 song like mika nakashima's ass. Downloads are boss, but not required, I just need exposure atm. So tell me what's up with japanese jazz, let the fanboying ensue...
