Interview Time!
December 8th, 2011. She took the stage for the first time as a 13th-generation trainee on the day marked the 6th anniversary of AKB48's theatrical debut.
Her name is Mitsumune Kaoru.
She was the subject of almost all discussions among fans that day.
"Who the hell is she?"
Her overwhelming beauty and sense of fashion are unparalleled - someone like this has never existed in the AKB48 line-up.
Just who is she?
One morning, bright and early. While on the set for Weekly Playboy's gravure set, she was asked about her attitude towards the photo-shoot.
"I'm having a great time. It's the first time I'm doing swimsuit photos..."
She was slightly nervous. But her response had a sense of maturity in it.
"I have not gone to the beach or the pool since I was young. This is also my first time wearing a bikini. I'm just enjoying these new experiences today."
Today we will find out more about Mitsumune Kaoru, the trainee that has everyone's attention.
Friends that are also rivals / The reason why she admires AKB48
"I'm 18 years old now, but I've been modeling in salons in Osaka, appearing a little in magazines, and doing small-time modeling jobs. When I heard that a friend was going to the model audition for the Kobe Collection, I thought, 'maybe I should go too', and then I won..."
Just before the photo-shoot, we asked her more questions about herself.
- You were already a model, why did you want to join AKB48?
"As a model I get to go to a lot of shows, but I thought, 'it would be great if I can find out what I really want to do from now on', so I talked to a lot of people. Someone then suggested, 'how about giving AKB48 a shot?' AKB48 does go to a lot of places, you know. Moreover, I actually don't have a lot of friends."
- That came out easy, eh?
(laughs) "With the Kobe Collection, the final 8 competed against one another for 6 months before a winner was chosen. The "friends who are also rivals" relationship among us is very precious to me, and I would like to get back into that again. I think I can find this in AKB48."
- AKB48 does have the "bond between people who are chasing their dreams together". However, it's difficult to imagine a top-tier model becoming an idol. Have you attended a handshake event?
"I am sure some supporters from my Kobe Collection era are against this. But there is no such border for me. I'm also more of an indoors person, and I think this might strike a chord with fans of AKB48.
- While we're on this topic, what are your hobbies?
"I'm a QURULI fan; I'm into Relativity Theory. As for comics I like Dorohedoro and Akira."
- Super cultured girl, aren't you?
"I also like to draw, and I always carry a notebook so I can draw things like these." (opens notebook)
- Whoa, what the hell? These are very realistic and detailed drawings! (photo on bottom right of first page)
"Foodstuffs, animals, human eyes and other body parts. I hurt my foot while in Korea, so I kept on drawing pictures of foot when I was in bed."
- These are good! By the way, what are you into recently?
"Lately I've been concentrating on buying things to decorate my room."
- What's the most expensive thing you bought recently?
"I fell in love with a replica of a mounted deer head and bought it on impulse. It was about 70,000 yen.
- What?! That's so strange! Maybe I shouldn't have asked. On the other hand, what were you like when you were young?
"I was normal like every other child who started ballet at the age of 3. (laughs) I did ballet and track until the end of middle school. I was a long distance runner, I guess I always liked pushing myself to the limit.
- Iiiiinteresting. Mitsumune Kaoru, you are interesting indeed!
Kobe Collection Winner, then AKB48
It was supposed to be a light interview, but she answered with such detail even on the short questions. Photo-shoot was about to start so we stopped the interview for the time being.
The atmosphere changed as soon as the photo-shoot started. Soft smiles with a cool, piercing gaze, her demeanor does not suggest that this is her first gravure shoot.
After a few combinations of poses and outfits, we clearly felt one thing when we looked into her eyes --- "Curiosity".
Her expression says, "I can't help but to be fascinated by the fact that life is changing so fast, right in front of my eyes."
It was already dark when the photo-shoot was over. The interview resumed.
- So, how was it?
"It was great fun! The swimsuits are new to me, and the white shirts, black pants. This is the first time that I've done a really stylish shoot, I had a great time."
- We could tell you were enjoying it just by looking. It looked like you didn't feel any pressure at all.
"Hmmm, maybe. It's not like I have a 'I want to do it like this' target for everything. It's whether I can or I can't do it. So even though I'm nervous, I don't feel any pressure from the people around me because it's irrelevant. I emphasize a lot more on 'Can I do this?' There are some drawbacks, and it's perfectionism in some aspects..."
- Perfectionism! So what kind of person do you want to become?
"A stylish person! But I'm only at about 2% of who I really want to be."
- 2%! You aim high! Are you happy about how fast your life is moving?
"...yes! I was part of the Kobe Collection; I performed 'Heart gata no Virus', a very idol-like song during the AKB48 Kouhaku Song Battle (the event took place on December 20th, 2011) after joining them; now I'm doing a gravure shoot like here, I can't help but to enjoy all this. I am happy!"
- We are also glad that we got to know you a little bit. So, final question - what's the one advantage that you think you have over the others?
- "Probably cheerfulness. I'm the type of person who is cheerful wherever I go, for better or for worse. At first I would be worried and anxious, but once I overcome the obstacles, things will look up."
- Right. You won't find an idol like this, in AKB48 or all of Japan!. On the internet you are called Mitsumune-kou.
"Shimazaki [Haruka] san and Watanabe [Mayu] san call me 'Kaoru-kun' for now...that's not bad. 'Mitsumune-kou'...now I'm a little worried. (laughs)"

I think I like this girl. She's deliciously ikemen. Although I'm not sure I like her being injected into AKB48 when others had to work hard and pass auditions and all that. Since she came to the stage with the rest of the kenkyuusei girls, she seemed somewhat upset and distant in my opinion, which made me wonder if she was already aware of the results; considering her roles in ATARU and Bakaleya (plus her gravure shots), probably she thought she would have a chance to rank in the extended senbatsu.
I can understand why she's upset, because she has been promoted heavily and all, but I'm relieved she's not part of the upcoming single; why? Because I think she needs to grow more, and learn to truly love AKB48 if she really wants to be in (and not just because she was transfered from her previous agency).

None in the group is willing to lend their positions nor lose to someone who is having things relatively easily: Kaoru still needs to prove she deserves to be more in the group, because there are many hopeful girls wanting to be promoted to a team, and girls who already belong to a team who are ignored and kept in the backgroud when she gets the pushing just because she was/is a fashion model.
I think she's very attractive, seems like a nice girl and I'm liking her as an actress, but she must work harder to show if she can be an idol at all (at least, in my opinion).

Ishtar san, very good points. Rather than being some shy withdrawn schoolgirl who wants to break out of her quiet world, or some country bumpkin from the provinces signing up for an audition that she knows will be an uphill battle, or a life long wota wanting to get in the game, Kaoru came from a background of modeling sucess, plus already had experience with agencies etc. Sort of the like the "Poor little rich girl" who has to prove herself to the others that she really isn't some spoiled girl demanding her share.
I can already see some special where she becomes friends with someone who is quite opposite to her, and then they learn from each other or sumpin' like dat......Anyway, as brutal as the election system can be, it basically pays the bills in terms of record sales, and each girl gets an opportunity to show her reactions, and then move from that point forward.

I expected her to be in the Future Girls, but I'm not too surprised she didn't rank. I get the feeling Kaoru has a lot of haters because she's quite different, coming from a successful modeling background and all. It's interesting to see someone who has had success and experience in entertainment in some way work her way up from the bottom. She's pretty natural at TV things (from the 13th gen Nemousu SP) and she's not bad at acting. Somehow though I also get the feeling that the senior members aren't totally sold on her yet. Maybe they're intimidated, I don't know. I haven't seen too many two-shots and that kind of stuff.
I like her a lot though. I kind of have a bias towards models (Mariko, Kojiharu, mmm yeah so fine), and Kaoru is definitely in that category. I think she just needs to reassess her goals, she seems determined enough and she has the skills.
I need to see her on moar variety, make it happen Yasusu!

AKB48’s Mitsumune Kaoru to be absent from handshake event
It’s been reported that AKB48 member Mitsumune Kaoru will be absent from the group’s handshake events on October 13 and the 14th.
According to AKB48’s blog, the reason for her absence is due to poor health. The management stated, “We will consider the future course of action and inform you later.”
Due to her poor health, Mitsumune was also absent from AKB48’s Tokyo Dome concerts in August and the premiere event for ‘Gekijouban Shiritsu Bakaleya Koukou‘ on the 8th.

８月より、体調不良でお休みを頂いていた光宗ですが
本人より活動辞退の申し入れがございましたので、ファンの皆様に
ご報告させて頂きます。
以下、本人から皆様へのコメントになります。
今回突然ではありますが、AKB48を辞退させていただきます。
13期研究生として去年AKB48に加入し、今年の夏の組閣にて新チームKのメンバーの一員として活動してゆく事を予定していた今、何故辞退するのかと驚かれる方もいらっしゃるかと思います。
自分自身以前から体調が優れず、自分の思う万全の状態で皆さんの前に立つ事が難しくなり、このままでは周りの方にご迷惑をかけてしまう事は勿論、自分への負担も大きくなってゆくのを感じ、辞退させていただくことを申し入れました。
スタッフのみなさんからは、「まずはゆっくり体調を治してからでいいから」と励ましていただきましたが、だからこそ、体調を万全にするためにも、今はAKBの活動も辞めることが自分にとってはいいのではないか、と思いました。
今の状態は、メンバーやスタッフのみなさんに心配をかけるばかりで、体調が万全ではない故に、結果としてかけてしまっているご迷惑に対して、自己嫌悪に陥ってしまうこともありました。
この結論を出すに至るまでは、スタッフさんと何度もメールでのやりとりで相談を重ねてきましたが、最終的には自分の意見を尊重していただきました。
今、このご報告をすることで、ファンの方に限らずメンバーの皆さん、支えて下さっている皆さんに悲しい思いや改めて、ご迷惑をかけてしまっているかと思います。申し訳ありません。
ですが、AKBのメンバーでなくなってしまったとしても、今後も別の形で皆さんの前に立つ事が出来る様、まずは体調を万全にしてベストコンディションになれるよう養生しますので、それまで待っていていただけると心から嬉しく思います。
加入してからの10ヵ月間、決して長くはない期間ですが、学びきれない程沢山の経験をさせていただきました。
沢山の人を常に間近に感じ過ごしてゆけた事を誇りに思います。
私を仲間に入れて下さって、本当にありがとうございました。またいつか必ずどこかでお目にかかれますように。

This is quite a funny one. She joined the group in that big generation of 16 members and immediately had this massive exposure due to her modelling agencies etc. She had that performance of Heart Gata Virus at Kouhaku with Paruru and Ranran. And everyone knew who she was. But everyone said she was scarily thin. Over time, she started to look less scary thin and a bit healthier. She even performed in the theatre with kenkyuusei a bunch of times. At Tokyo Dome she got promoted. Strangely enough, she was absent for her promotion to to her ill health. And they used a cardboard cut-out in her place. Now she doesn't even get to perform once as a full team member. The super-kenkyuusei is no more. I wouldn't be surprised if she continues her previous modelling career though.

From what I hear her blog and G+ stuff, etc will all be deleted within 12 hours? They're not wasting time :oops:
It always sucks to lose a girl due to poor health. I never noticed her being that thin, but if that's the cause of these troubles then continuing with her model career may not be the smartest thing to do either. I felt she was the most entertaining during the Ariyoshi episodes linked above, so perhaps she can find a spot in the world of variety...
Kaoru made quite the impact when she first came around. Magazine spreads and plenty of exposure. However, I think she would have never been able to reach the top as an AKB48 member because she already "had a life" before AKB48. She's not one of those girls you can follow from the very beginning and see her progress. She came into the group during her modeling career. In fact, I think that's the reason why SDN48 never made it big either.
Anyway, still sad to see her go. Now we never know what she might have accomplished and we're definitely missing out on many more lol moments.

Really sad to see my Iron chef Japan is leaving AKB. I hope she comes back once she gets well :cry: whether it be in AKB or not.

同作は写真サークルに所属する女子大生4人組の友情と絆を描くハートフルドラマ。舞台挨拶には光宗のほか、熊谷弥香、高山都、園ゆきよ、向井宗敏監督が登壇予定

Kaoru Mitsumune, who recently declined to participate in further AKB48 activities due to declining health, on stage to promote the debut screening of the film 'Joshi Camera' which will be be held at the Human Trust Cinema in Shibuya on Nov. 24.
In October, in annoucing her resignation, she said: With the condition becoming bad, standing in front of everyone in this state is not good, and at this rate will become inconvenient for everyone around. For future work, standing in front of you in one form or another,first when my condition has become at its best, I would be very glad if the fans could wait for me.
The film is a heartfelt drama about four college girls who are friends in a photography group. In addition to Mistumune, appearing on stage was Kaori Wataru, Miyako Takayama, Yukiyo Sono, and director Munekoshi Mukai.

Former AKB48 member Mitsumune Kaoru to make her debut as a magazine model

Former AKB48 member Mitsumune Kaoru will make her debut as a magazine model on the December issue of fashion magazine 'Oggi' (October 28 release).
During her days in AKB48, Mitsumune gained a lot of attention as a "super kenkyuusei". Although she had received many offers from popular fashion magazines, this will be her first time to actually appear in one.
In the upcoming issue of 'Oggi', Mitsumune will appear in a 11-page feature called 'Makimono no 1gaketsu Coordinate'. The magazine's targeted audience are working women in their late-twenties to early-thirties. Through the featured article, Mitsumune will show different ways of wearing a scarf, as well as a "new face" of the former idol.
Mitsumune won the Grand Prix in 2011's 'Kobe Collection Model Audition'. In December of the same year, she joined AKB48 and gained attention as a "super kenkyuusei", but withdrew from the group in October of 2012.

Mitsumune Kaoru stars in Shinsei Kamattechan's PV for 'Jibunrashiku'

The PV for Shinsei Kamattechan's song "Jibunrashiku (2015 ver.)" has been upload onto Warner Music Japan's official YouTube channel.
The PV, directed by Smith, stars former AKB48 kenkyuusei Mitsumune Kaoru. After resigning from the group, she has been active in both acting and modeling.
On her first time meeting and working with Noko (Vo, G), Mitsumune commented, "I've been listening to Shinsei Kamattechan long before I was given this job. I love 'Nakama wo Sagashitai' and 'Ultimate Laser!'." After hearing this comment, Noko said, "I'm happy and nervous."
"Jibunrashiku (2015 ver.)" will be included in Shinsei Kamattechan's best-of album "Best Kamattechan" that's scheduled for release on June 24.
