Kamisori x Zombie (MakoNaanya) - Dreams Come True(?)

----------------------

Kamisori woke up in an unfamiliar room. She could’ve sworn she had fallen asleep in the classroom at Majijo, but now, she was in a room with a table sitting in front of a mirror nailed to the wall, makeup scattered on the surface of the table. She turned and saw a few couches and seats as well. And when she looked in the mirror, she didn’t look like herself at all. Her hair was no longer in her signature side pony and was all let down and straight. She also wasn’t in her Majijo uniform and wearing a dress, something she’d never wear!

Saying that Kamisori was confused as hell would NOT be an understatement. Just then, she heard a click from behind and saw the only door to the room opened. She saw her best friend, and partner, Zombie, walk in, but just like her, she had completely changed. She was wearing a dress and jacket that wasn’t at all like anything she’d wear, and her hair was let down and straightened as well, but she had a headband with a ribbon in. Zombie looked at her friend and smiled.

“Kojimako-chan, there you are!” she said cheerfully. “Come on, let’s get going.”

“Eh?” Now, Kamisori was more confused than ever. “Zombie, what are you doing? And, why are you dressed like that?”

“Hm? Oh, this! I bought it recently. Do you like it?” The angel-faced girl simply said with a smile, until she realized something. “Wait… did you just call me ‘Zombie’?”

“Why else? You are Zombie!”

“Mou~ Kojimako-chan, that was only a drama. I’m a normal human, just like you!”

“Not that kind of ‘zombie’... Hold on, why do you keep calling me ‘Kojimako-chan’?”

Zombie just tilted her head, confused. Indeed, Kamisori knew her real name was Kojima Mako, and Zombie’s real name was Owada Nana, but they never called each other by something other than their Majijo nicknames.

“Oh, I… guess I got used to it,” Zombie then said shyly.

“Eh?”

“At first, I always called you ‘Kojima-san’... And then, time passed, and it become ‘Mako-san’. And now, I’ve finally gotten used to calling you ‘Kojimako’, or even just ‘Mako’. So, I was happy, because I finally got to call you by your first name, when you were already doing so with me.”

Kamisori then got suspicious. “Huh? I-I don’t know what you’re talking about… This is weird. Did Hinabe put you up to this? Is this a prank? Are they secretly watching us?”

“Are you okay, Kojimako-chan?”

To Kamisori’s surprise, her best friend suddenly came up and felt her forehead. Her face was so close to hers, she felt her heart pounding. Hell, she never felt it pound this hard in her life. She felt the heat creep up to her cheeks as Zombie opened her eyes again and stared into hers. The chocolate dark brown orbs were sparkling, making Kamisori’s heart skip a beat.

“You don’t have a fever… Maybe you’re just tired.”

“Uh, I...”

“Come on, now, let’s go,” Zombie took the girl’s hand.

“Wha-? Where?”

“The park. Our promised spot, remember?”

“‘Promised spot’? What are you talking abo--?”

“Stop being silly. It’s our favorite spot. Now, let’s go.”

Kamisori couldn’t help but silently follow her friend. She also couldn’t get over the strange new sensation she felt within her chest.

“Boom… boom… my heart keeps pounding… even now, while Zombie’s holding my hand… there’s a weird… warm.. feeling in my chest… Why? Why do I feel..? It’s so…”

They finally arrived at a park just outside the city streets of Tokyo. It had a large open space, a single tree growing at the top of a hill, and below was a children’s playground. Zombie couldn’t contain her excitement as she ran down and went to the swingset, standing on one of the swings and started swinging herself.

“I loved these swings when I was younger~. You said you used to come here, too, right?”

“Uh, did I..?” Kamisori tried to play along.

“Don’t lie! You always talked about how you would play hide-and-seek and stuff with your friends?”

“Really..? I don’t remember… If anything, I don’t remember ever coming to this park or playing with any friends.”

“So… alone?”

“Or at all. Zombie, this really is strange. Cut the act already!”

Zombie stopped swinging and stood back on the ground. “Is there something wrong?”

“Something wrong? Zombie, quit acting like this! I’m not falling for it!”

“Falling for what?!”

“This whole innocent girl act! I don’t like it! It just doesn’t suit you! Stop acting like this and go back to your regular self! It’s annoying me like hell!”

Zombie fell silent, staring at Kamisori. It was only then Kamisori realized she went too far.

“Ah, I-I mean--”

“Mako… you idiot.”

“Eh?”

“Not once today did you call me ‘Nana’ or ‘Naanya’. You kept calling me ‘Zombie, Zombie’, you didn’t even care we came back here! Did you really forget?! Did you forget, this was where I met you?!”

Kamisori now stood silent. She saw tears falling down Zombie’s eyes, a sight she had never witnessed before. Before she could say anything, Zombie slapped her face and called her an idiot one more time before running off. She saw Zombie run towards the tree and sat down under it, still crying.

That was when Kamisori remembered. Her first meeting with Zombie, their first, and only fight they ever had with each other. No matter how many times she cut Zombie down, the girl would get back up, as if nothing happened. Kamisori eventually got tired out, and their match ended in a draw. But, the two forged their friendship that day. That was how their bond began, and how it deepened as they grew closer and closer, always beside each other, never leaving each other’s sides.

Kamisori felt like an idiot for forgetting such an important day, and now, she felt like a jerk for saying what she did. Naanya or Zombie, both are the same, it didn’t matter. She was her partner and best friend who she loved and cared for. Even if this was all just some weird test or prank or, what-the-hell-ever, she could feel Naanya/Zombie’s strong love for her.

She walked up the hill to the tree where Naanya was still crying. She looked up at Kamisori, tears glistening on her cheeks. Even then, she still had the face of an angel, Kamisori thought.

“Zo… I mean, Naanya,” Kamisori started. “I’m sorry… I was stupid and didn’t know your feelings… I completely forgot and.. you must hate me now. But… I truly am sorry.”

“Mako...”

“You… you’re my best friend. So… if you forgive me, I absolutely promise, I’ll never forget anything again! About you, about us! I’ll keep my promise and be the best friend you have! Okay..?” She looked and saw Naanya’s eyes were wide. “Please…”

Naanya stood up, smiling while still crying.

“O-oi, why are you still crying? I apologized, okay? Aren’t you ha--” she was interrupted once again, when Naanya suddenly hugged her.

“Mako… I forgive you… and.. I should be the one apologizing.”

“Haa..?”

“I kept a secret from you… but, now, I feel like I can finally tell you.”

Naanya held Mako’s face as she stared into her pitch black orbs. Mako felt her chest pounding again as Naanya’s face got closer.

“The truth is, Mako… I love you.”

“E-e-e-eeeeh?!”

Naanya closed her eyes, as if waiting for something. Mako knew exactly what.

“Oi… is this for real? Is this really happening?! Zombie, be serious… Do you… really..?”

However, Mako’s common sense eventually left, disappeared as the warm feeling in her chest spread. Before she knew it, her lips were closer. Her eyelids fluttered shut as she pressed her lips against Naanya’s. Her lips tasted so sweet, like strawberries. It was entrancing her, the warmth, the strawberry taste, the sound of Naanya’s synchronizing with heart her own. All time had stopped and she forgot everything. All that was left was her and Naanya, and this moment…

“This is like… a dream.”

…..

“...sori..! ..Oi, Kamisori! Get up!”

Kamisori woke up in the classroom, her heart still pounding like crazy. She saw her partner in front of her, in her Majijo uniform. She looked at herself and saw she, too, was looking like herself again. She sighed.

“It was a dream. Yokatta~”

“What happened? You were calling my name in your sleep,” Zombie mentioned.

“God, you have no flipping idea, Zombie. I dreamt that you were in love with me.”

“Eh?!” Zombie was shocked. Kamisori laughed in response, making her blush. “D-don’t laugh!”

“Haha, sorry. But, it just shocked me. I was starting to think it wasn’t a dream. Really, though, Zombie in love with me…” she snickered. “Damn, that would be something!”

“Hey, what about me?”

“Haa?”

“Would you fall in love with me?”

Kamisori giggled. “Yeah, sure. Now, let’s go home, it’s already late.”

As Kamisori started walking, Zombie gave a soft smile, looking at her friend with longing eyes. She sighed before following her partner as they left the school.

Here another OS! Once again, it's Kamisori x Zombie! (Note: It's based off the same Gaiden story, but more directly.)

+++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++++

Kamisori x Zombie (MakoNaanya) - Kamisori is from Gekioko?!

----------------------

It was the end of another day in Majijo, and Zombie was searching for her partner and closest friend, Kamisori, so they could walk home together. She then deducted that the girl was probably in the 2nd-year classroom with Team Hinabe and decided to check there. She saw the five were talking to her partner about something, she couldn’t hear what, but as soon as she walked in, she felt a heavy atmosphere as she saw Kamisori staring at her with empty eyes.

“Kamisori..? Guys..? What’s wrong?”

“What’s wrong?!” Uonome spoke in an angered tone. “This!!! THIS is what’s wrong!!!”

She pulled out a Gekioko uniform, shocking Zombie. She remembered that terrible nightmare where she saw her best friend turned against her, as a Gekioko student, but she know it was just a dream and it could never be true… that is, until she saw Uonome pull out the uniform in front of her.

“We found THIS in Kamisori’s shoe locker,” Dodobusu said.

“Think you could hide this from us forever?! Haa?!” Kusogaki gained up on the girl, who didn’t even meet her gaze.

She simply answered. “It’s not mine…”

“LIES!” Kenpou approached her and grabbed her chin, making her look at them. “This crime can be charged as fraud! Do you have ANY idea who you’re up against?!”

“Guys, stop!” Zombie tried to stop them, but Jiseidai stood in front of her, blocking her path. “Let me through, I want to talk to Kamisori!”

“You can do that once we know she’s a traitor!”

As the five were yelling, Uonome approached Kamisori and grabbed her collar, ready to punch her. But all noise stopped when they heard the sound of a pin dropping. It bounced on the ground and landed at Zombie’s foot. The girl silently picked it up and was shocked when she saw what it was. It was a school badge, not for Majijo… for Gekioko.

“No…”

When Zombie saw this, her heart sank. She couldn’t deny anymore, that this was the truth. She met her partner’s gaze as she stood silent.

“Kamisori… please, tell me this is a lie...”

“Just give it up,” Uonome said. “You’re one of them! You’re Gekioko!”

Kamisori broke free from Uonome’s grasp and ran off. The Hinabe girls were about to chase after her, but Zombie stopped all of them.

“Stop!”

“Zombie, let us--”

“No! I’ll take care of this! I’ll prove Kamisori is still one of us!”

“Zombie…”

“Are you sure?”

“Kamisori is my best friend. I trust her.”

The team looked at each other, and they all agreed. In this situation, this was something Zombie had to face alone. Uonome faced the girl again.

“Alright, we won’t interfere.”

Zombie then ran off to look for her partner. She had searched the whole school, but couldn’t find her anywhere. She then saw Kamisori walking outside in the place they would usually spend time together. Zombie approached Kamisori, the other girl not dare looking back at her.

“Kamisori!” she called out to her. “Nee, Kamisori… just talk to me. Why did you have a Gekioko uniform..? And the pin…?”

“Leave me alone.”

“Please, just tell me all of it was a lie, and i’ll believe you! You can tell me, we’re friends, right?!”

“SHUT UP!!!” Kamisori yelled, still not turning to face her. She didn’t want Zombie to see, she was crying. Tears of frustration ran down her cheeks, a burning pain in her chest. Meanwhile, Zombie was crying as well, and she felt her heart breaking. Kamisori then confessed. “It’s true… I… I’m from Gekioko.”

Zombie shook her head, she didn’t want to accept the truth. She fell to her knees, holding the pin.

“No way… It can’t be true...”

“Zombie...”

“So then… why did you come here? Why did you come to Majijo in the first place?”

Kamisori gulped before answering. “To take the top. That was my first order… but, I didn’t want to… It was tiring, and boring.. so I just decided, I would get rid of everyone, until there was no one left. That I’d be the only one standing…”

Zombie cried more. Everything she knew about her partner, her best friend, it was all a lie. And she fell for it, the fool she was. She desperately wished for this to be another nightmare, that she would wake up and Kamisori would be beside her smiling, that she wouldn’t be a traitor, and the two could still be together. She wanted to wake up from this horrible dream, but this is reality, and she needed to accept, no matter how heartbreaking it was…

“Why is it like this…?”

“But…” Kamisori then started again, her voice cracking because of the tears. “After meeting you.. all of that changed.”

“Eh..?”

“After I met you and we started fighting as a pair.. something in me changed. At Gekioko, I was the most feared and had no friends. You were the first person I could ever call a friend… I didn’t feel lonely… Even though all of it was a lie.. you were my one, true friend…”

“Kamisori…”

“I betrayed you and lied all this time...” Kamisori turned to face Zombie, her eyes still red with tears. “I’m sorry…!”

She fell to her knees and hugged Zombie, still crying into her chest. Crying out in frustration, anger, pain… all of her emotions and stress where let out in her cries. Zombie could only hug her partner, crying along with her.

“I can’t go back there anymore… I’m no longer a Gekioko student...”

“That’s right, Kamisori. You don’t belong there anymore… You belong here, with me. We’re the strongest 1st-year combi, Kamisori and Zombie. And we have Hinabe and Sakura-san. You’re not alone anymore!”

As those words burned into her, Kamisori nodded and laid her head against Zombie’s shoulder. Zombie had never seen her like this, and Kamisori never felt like this. All the pain she suffered through silently was gone, and she felt like a heavy burden weighed on her had lifted off her shoulders. She felt whole again and letting out all that stress relieved her.

She eventually separated and faced Zombie. Her face was truly that of an angel’s, and with tears still streaming down her cheeks, she was painfully beautiful.

“You’re such a crybaby...” Kamisori said with a grin, wiping off Zombie’s tears.

Zombie laughed, returning the favor. “You too...”

“We’re both crybabies.”

“Un...”

As they were staring at each other, Kamisori felt herself being drawn closer. Zombie closed her eyes as their lips met, tasting the saltiness of both their tears mixed with the sweetness and passionate warmth of the kiss. Zombie’s eyes opened, shocked at what just happened, and she was first to part from this kiss.

“K-Kamisori..!”

“I’ve always loved you, Zombie… I never had the balls to say it, but since I’ve let my biggest secret out, I might as well lay everything bare. I seriously… seriously love you!”

“Kamisori…” Zombie was speechless. The other girl was afraid of what she would say, but then she saw Zombie’s lips curve in a smile and she hugged her, whispering in her ear. “I love you, too.”

Kamisori smiled and hugged her best friend back.

Up from above, the Hinabe girls watched the entire scene unfold, as the two finally got up and started walking together, holding hands.

“So… what’s going to happen now?” Kusogaki asked.

Uonome grinned as she saw Kamisori take the pin back from Zombie, but then threw it out somewhere it would never be found, the two laughing.

“Nothing’s going to change. In fact, things will be a whole lot better.”

Ah I remembered that Gaiden episode. The 2nd part is probably the continuation assuming it really happened. Team Hinabe kinda joined in for fun. Instead of 1 it was 5 girls chasing the traitor. It's kinda cheesy in the end but I like it.

Shirogiku x Kurobara (FuuMiru) - Driving me Insane

----------------------

Laughter echoed through the skies. Insane, maniacal laughter, along with cries of pain and mercy. Kurobara laughed at her victims as she kicked them to the ground, watching them beg and writhe in misery. She loved how alive she felt, the thrill it gave her that was close to something of ecstasy. A feeling unlike any other, and she loved every minute of it.

Recently, she had been feeling something off. Something that was making it hard for her to think, that she would lose track of time, and feel this strange sensation in her heart. She didn’t know what it was, but it hurt. So she would always go and find some weakling to torture to make it go away. Even so, she felt it come back later, and it seemed to return sooner and sooner as she kept repeating the process.

But now, she was thinking of nothing. Nothing but the ecstatic feeling of bending her opponents to her will and making them break, hearing their cries of pain was music to her ears. A sound she could easily get drunk on if she could, an addiction. As she was laughing, she didn’t notice someone coming from behind and grab her shoulder. Her laughing ceased and she turned to see her partner, clad in the same black-and-white stripe sweater and Gekioko uniform, Shirogiku.

Her excitement dulled down and faded as she felt the familiar, loathing pain come back to her slowly. “Shiro...giku?”

“You had enough?” she asked the girl as she stared with black, empty eyes. “You looked like you’ve tired yourself out. Let’s go.”

“I wasn’t.. finished…”

“You are. You know what happens when you go past your limit.”

Admittedly, Shirogiku was worried for her partner at times like these. She knows she’s been going on her own, beating up people for her own enjoyment. At first, she thought it was just Kurobara being herself, but she felt something was off in her behavior. She had seen what Kurobara could be like when she would completely lose it and go all out. It was a sight to be feared.

They arrived back at their regular spot in the school, somewhat of their base. Kurobara quietly sat as Shirogiku was pacing around the room. She was thinking back to when she and Kurobara had faced Sakura. Even after all they put her through, she was indeed a clever fighter, along with the help of her two self-proclaimed underlings.

“You know what that means, right?” she asked her partner. “It means there are still people who can catch us off guard. We need to up our game, get stronger…”

Kurobara wasn’t listening. Her mind was trailing off, but her eyes were fixated on the girl with white dyed in her hair. Mesmerized, she once again felt a tinge of pain. She hated that she was feeling this, and she wanted some way for it to stop. Since no one was around for her to torture, she thought of one other resort.

She got up, slowly walking towards the wall, an empty look in her eyes. She ignored Shirogiku’s calling and placed both hands against the wall. She then began pounding her head against the hard brick surface, disturbing her partner.

“Kurobara! Stop!” She grabbed the girl’s hair and made her stop. There was already a red spot on her forehead, not enough to leave a bruise, but still pretty bad. She saw Kurobara’s lifeless eyes staring at her and became worried. “Oi… what is wrong with you? Why the fuck have you been acting like this recently?!”

“Shirogiku… don’t...”

“I need you to tell me what’s going on!”

“Stop!” She tried to push her away, but Shirogiku’s grip was strong. Like a cobra’s grip. She avoided her cold gaze, but could feel her dark orbs piercing into her. “Please… if you don’t stop.. I’ll..!”

“What..?”

Kurobara started to cry. She didn’t know why, but tears were falling down her eyes.

“I want it.. to just stop… This weird pain.. in my heart… I thought.. making other people suffer.. hearing their cries.. would make me forget… I thought hurting myself somewhere else.. would make it go away… but it doesn’t. It keeps coming back… I don’t know why..! But… it’s only when…”

“When?”

“Whenever… I’m around you, Shirogiku.”

“Eh..?”

“I just don’t understand why I feel like this… but it’s only with you… Why..?”

Shirogiku couldn’t believe what she was hearing. For so long, she had known Kurobara as someone who didn’t know what pain felt like. Only the excitement she felt by inflicting pain on others. Even herself, who was sadistic as she is, hated seeing the girl crying in front of her. It caused a pain in her heart, one she wasn’t going to get rid of the same way Kurobara did.

“Kurobara… are you.. in love with me?”

The girl looked up at Shirogiku’s eyes, seeing something she had never seen before, but couldn’t describe. “Eh?”

“I’ve heard it all before, that love is one of the most painful and most beautiful emotions one can feel.”

“All I feel is the pain…”

“Then, let’s change that.”

Shirogiku pushed her partner against the wall, their foreheads close to touching. Her face was so close, Kurobara could feel her heart pounding. Instead of the same pain she felt, there was a growing warmth in her chest as she saw Shirogiku grin. She lifted Kurobara’s chin and kissed her with gusto.

Kurobara could feel her heart pounding against her chest like a drum. Her body slowly heated up as Shirogiku continued her musings on her the latter, her hands tracing her body and touching, caressing her gently. She never felt her partner giving such a soft touch, it was making her melt, and her knees grew weak from the intensity of it all. This wasn’t the same thrill she felt when she tortured her opponents, this was pure ecstasy she was experiencing. And it was the best she had ever felt. She forgot the pain, all her worries and stress from her previous troubles.

The two finally parted for air. Kurobara’s breaths came uneven as she stared at Shirogiku, seeing she too was overwhelmed by the new sensation.

“How did that feel?” she asked her.

“It was.. incredible…” she breathed out. “That was the beautiful part you mentioned before, wasn’t it?”

“It didn’t hurt, right?”

Kurobara shook her head in response.

“Does that prove it then?”

“Yup. Shirogiku, I do love you.”

The girl gave Kurobara a grin. “More than torture?”

“More than anything,” she giggled in response. “You drive me insane.”

MakoNaanya - Fairy in a Miniskirt

-----------------------------

Naanya loves humans. She was always so curious about their world, and how they lived their lives. She would always watch them, from a close distance. Good thing, too, because since she was a fairy, normal humans couldn’t see her. The only ones who could were small children, or, to put more simply, anyone who believed in fairies.

She would always go to play with the children, and the one she loved to play with the most was a little girl named Mako. Mako loved fairies, and Naanya was her favorite playmate. The two would always play games like hide-and-seek when they were together. Mako also loved idols, and she would always sing and dance for the fairy. She’d even teach her some of the routines so she could dance with her.

As Mako got older, her belief in fairies never faded. Whenever she visited the playground, she would always see Naanya playing with the children. The fairy always gave her advice and listened to her problems, and whenever she had a bad day, she’d be the one to comfort her and cheer her up. The two were practically the best of friends.

Then, one day, Mako came to Naanya crying because she had a fight with one of her best friends at school. It was over a guy, a stupid guy. But it was a guy Mako’s friend liked, and because of a stupid misunderstanding, everything fell apart. Just like how the clouds were unable to clear from the sky, Naanya was unable to cheer Mako up. She eventually stopped coming to see her since then and Naanya was alone. Several weeks passed since then, and Naanya continued to wait, hoping her friend would return.

A drop of rain fell on her head, and then it picked up. She had to find shelter quick, or she wouldn’t be able to fly home. She stood under a tree where her wings could stay dry. Then, in the distance, she saw Mako by herself. She tried to call out to her, but she didn’t hear her. Naanya was worried it was because of the rain.

Then, she saw two girls approach Mako, the two smiling. Naanya had recognized them, the two were her closest friends, Nana and Miki. She tried to get closer, listening to their conversation. Miki was talking about how someone in the school mentioned they saw what might have been a fairy. Nana told her to stop joking and hit her head, but Miki then asked if Mako believed in fairies…

“Fairies? I don’t believe they exist.”

“Eh..?”

The two laughed and started walking together, never seeing Naanya. The fairy started to cry underneath the tree. She had lost her best friend and favorite human being to play with, all because she stopped believing in her. After crying, she started to walk under the rain, deprived of her hope. She leaned against the brick wall of an alley and let the rain fall of her, getting her body soaked and dampening her wings.

“Naanya, there you are,” It was then another fairy, Ryouka, approached her. She was Naanya’s senpai and her closest friend amongst the fairies, she looked at her with worried eyes and Naanya immediately hugged her.

“Ryouka-chan… Mako.. she doesn’t believe in me anymore… I don’t know what to do… I just want her to be happy… I want to be by her side…”

“You love this human, don’t you?”

She nodded. “I do.”

“What would you give up to be with her?”

Naanya hesitated, gripping onto Ryouka’s shirt, before answering…

“My wings.”

That moment, Naanya’s wings disappeared. She was now a human.

She started walking the streets on her own, looking for her friend. She then saw Mako coming out of a convenience store. When Mako looked up, she saw Naanya standing in the rain. Naanya smiled, tears still falling down her face along with raindrops.

Mako didn’t recognize the girl, but she felt sorry for her. She walked over, opening her umbrella to block the rain, and let Naanya step under with her, even though she was already soaked.

“You’ll get sick,” she said.

“Don’t worry. The rain never bothered me.”

“Aren’t you cold?” Mako then asked, seeing Naanya in a sleeveless white dress.

“N-no…”

However, she saw the girl was shivering. She took off her jacket and let Naanya wear it.

“There. It’ll keep you warm for now.”

“Th-thank you, Mako-chan…”

“Eh? How do you know my name?”

“Uh, oh… I accidentally heard someone say your name. We passed by each other in the street, and you didn’t see me. I’m Naanya, by the way.”

“Nice to meet you.”

“Um… do you want to go for a walk?”

“Eh?”

“Just to, y’know… get to know each other.”

“Uh okay… Where should we..?”

“I’ll show you.” Naanya took the girl’s hands and they started walking.

They started walking downtown until they arrived at the park. the children’s park, where all their memories were held. Mako gave Naanya a confused look.

“Why are we here?”

“This is an important place to me,” Naanya said.

The rain started to lift, so Naanya stepped out and stood on the swing, moving it to start swinging. Mako closed the umbrella and watched her. Something about her seemed familiar, and that’s when something started to click. Something she forgot about, something very important and dear to her, but because she was so heartbroken, she had forgot.

As the sun started to shine through the clouds, she swore she could see wings on Naanya’s back. Her eyes widened at the sight and she stared in awe, even as the light faded and the wings of light disappeared. Naanya stepped off the swing and smiled.

“You remember me, don’t you?”

Mako nodded.

“Naanya… I’m so sorry I forgot.”

“It’s okay. I know you were just sad. And I forgive you.”

“Can we still be friends?”

“Of course! I became human for you, Mako-chan. We can always be together now!”

Mako smiling, hugging the former fairy. They then looked up and saw a beautiful rainbow forming in the sky over their heads. With their friendship rebonded, the two held hands and started walking together, where they would restart the days of their friendship.

Suki Kirai ~Love & Hate~ - Ryouka x Naanya

---------------------------------

“Love you”
“Hate you”
I don’t know…
I hate you!

I, Oshima Ryouka, also known as the kusogaki (ksgk, for short), have an admirer… Or, more like, someone who’s obsessed with me. Owada Nana. She loves me… too much. But… I can’t stand her! I don’t like her. I hate her!

“Love you”
There’s no other
I love you!

I, Owada Nana, the girl with the angel face, as my classmates say, am in love. Madly in love. With someone no one would have expected. Oshima Ryouka, even though she’s known for being a troublemaker, I love her. I love, love, love her!

“Love” and “Hate”
I don’t know which
It won’t stop
Love & Hate

Dang it! “That person’s” confessions
They’re spinning around and around in my head
“Love”, “Hate”, is there not a third option?
I can only choose one or the other

“Ryou-chan~!” I felt a pair of arms hug me from behind as a familiar voice rang.

Ah, it’s her again… She always does this. She comes into the classroom just to see me.

“Hi, Naanya.”

“Hi, Ryou-chan~ How are you?”

“Um, good, I guess… Maybe a bit tired, though.” And I don’t need her clinging to me this early in the morning.

“Oh, still sleepy? I’ll let you sleep on my lap~”

“No thanks!”

“Oh, come on, don’t be shy~”

“I’m not being shy, I just don’t feel like napping on someone’s lap.”

“Aw~” Naanya pouted. “I wanted to see Ryou-chan’s sleeping face~.”

I looked at her pout, then sighed. “How about… we eat lunch together, in the courtyard?”

Her eyes sparkled like diamonds.

“Really?!”

“Sure. Why not?”

“Yay! Thank you!” She hugged me again. At least she’s smiling…

Seeing her sad, made me feel guilty…

Well! The answer is decided already!
Our “WEDDING”! Yes, the vision is perfect!
Yes, a place with lots of trees would be nice
And maybe we could raise three children

But wait, why? We’re only 16! Hello?!
Something like “going out”...
I love you!
Listen to me, idiot!
You have no guard up, and lots of people like you!

“Let’s get married, Ryou-chan!” I said as Ryouka ate. She coughed suddenly and looked at me.

“Haa?! W-w-wedding?!”

“Yup! We could move in together, somewhere with lots of trees. And we could adopt children.”

“Woah, woah, woah! We’re only 16! We can’t get married and have kids just like that!”

“I’m planning for our future. It’s common sense I’d be thinking of marriage.”

“But… we aren’t even dating. And, going out would be--”

“I LOVE YOU, RYOU-CHAN!!! BE MY GIRLFRIEND!!!!”

“Listen to me for a second!”

I pouted. “Fine~”

“Naanya, I know you… like me, but…”

“But?”

“Just… just let me think about it, okay? Let’s not rush into this.”

No rush… Am I going too fast? Maybe I was too pushy on her…

“Okay… Sure… We can do that.”

I want to fall in love - fluffy, fluffy
I smile at the principal’s speech
Milk and a panda makes a polar bear
The world is so lively

“Love you”
“Hate you”
I don’t know
I hate you, but I love you..?

“Here!”
“Eh?”
You wanted that rainbow quartz on the way home
I saw you looking at it
It’s opposite from the school road
But, hey don’t mind that.

The next day, I didn’t see Naanya rarely at all. She didn’t come to class to hug me, and I didn’t see her at lunch either… I wonder if she’s okay.

The end of the day came, and that’s when I finally saw her. She walked up to me, a smile.

“Ryou-chan…”

“Naanya. Uh, I’m sorry if I--”

“Here!” She suddenly handed me a panda bear stuffed doll.

“Eh?”

“I saw you staring at it through the shop window. You wanted it, right? So, here.”

I took the doll. The ears look like hearts… indeed, I did find it cute.

“But, how..? It’s too far away from the school. Don’t tell me…”

“Don’t worry about it,” she winked. She then pulled out a polar bear doll identical to my panda. “I got one for me, as well. Now we each have one.”

“Naanya…”

At any rate, you aren’t exactly my type
So why am I reacting like “that”?
I see, because you suddenly showed me kindness
Now I’m shaking from this feeling

Even if I do slowly, surely become an adult
There’s no doubt
None?
No matter what, I love you!
It’s “NO PROBLEM”, just believe me!

I hope Ryou-chan doesn’t find out… I faked a cold in order to go to that store and buy her the doll. What would she think of me..?

I hugged my polar bear doll.

“Nee, Polar bear-chan, do you think Ryou-chan loves me like I love her?”

No answer. What am I doing, a stuffed doll won’t reply. I sighed and looked up at the ceiling.

“I wonder if I did the right thing… or maybe…”

Maybe… Ryou-chan just hates me….

No.. No, I refuse to believe that! I don’t believe that Ryou-chan could hate me. Maybe she’s just confused about her own feelings.

I won’t know until… I confess to her.

“Yosh! Tomorrow, I’ll definitely confess my love to her! Seriously and sincerely!”

See! You lit a fire in me - shaking, shaking!
It burns and rises into a high, a pyromania
“I love you!” I’m not so sure
But it has to be the answer

Oh no, I feel myself being dyed
Because of the kindness I came to know
You can be a weirdo sometimes, but…
I’m being dyed by your love

Another day came, and for a while, I thought the same thing from yesterday would happen. Naanya didn’t come and it’s almost lunch.

Maybe I really did hurt her feelings…

“Ryou-chan!” She then appeared, approaching me.

“Na-?” She grabbed my hand and gave me a serious look.

“Come with me.”

She guided me down the hall, up to the roof of the school. After the door shut, she looked at me straight in the eyes.

“Ryou...ka. I… I love you, Ryouka.”

“Naanya, you tell me that everyday.”

“No, I… I mean it! I’m… in love with you! For real!”

“Eh..?”

“Did you not think I was serious? At first, I was doubting as well, but… now I have no doubt. I am really, truly in love with you, Ryouka. So… can we give this a try? Will you.. be my girlfriend?”

My heart… it’s pounding so hard. I don’t know how to respond.

“Naanya…”

“Ryouka… kiss me.”

“E-eh?!”

“That’ll show you I’m serious, right? So, please.” She closed her eyes, waiting for me to give her an answer.

The only now, that I’ll know if this is real… is to go full speed ahead, huh?

So, I closed my eyes and kissed her.

I want to fall in love - sparkling and shining
The panda fell asleep, how boring
It appeared because of our love
And we raised it for the first time by giving it water

We didn’t pull away for a few seconds, only until we felt it was time.

I met her gaze again. She smiled.

“I do…”

“Eh..?”

“Naanya… I love you. I really do! I know that now! I was so confused on what the heck was going on with me, but… now I see. I’ve loved you all this time.”

“So, does this mean..?”

“Yes, Naanya. I will gladly be your girlfriend.”

I smiled and hugged her tightly, feeling her return it warmly.

“I love you. I love you so much, Ryouka.”

“Me too. I love you, Naanya.”

Two fateful people who “loved” at the same time
Created an intertwining fromage
Even if we hate each other, we love each other
The two of us now, are in love.

“Love you”
“Hate you”
Now I know
I love you.

“Love you”
There’s no other
I love you!

“Love” and “Hate”
It never ends
Love & Hate

Secret Garden - MeruUme (feat. SakurAnna)

--------------------

“Oi~ Meru-chan~~~” A loud voice from a certain Murashige Anna startled Meru as she was focused on her phone, looking through the mobile apps, until the half-Russian girl ran up from behind and hugged her, making her look up.

“Mou, Annya, it’s way too early in the morning to be this loud!”

“What’re you doing~?” She said as she looked over to see her phone. “Ah! What’s this? Another text from your ‘secret admirer’~?”

“Shh! Quiet!” Meru covered her mouth, embarrassed. “..Yes. It’s her, again.”

“Mmph!” Anna’s voice was muffled. Meru uncovered her mouth, “What’s it about this time?”

“She says that… she wants to meet me.”

Anna squealed. “Oh my God!! Where, where??”

“She gave me a picture of this…” She showed her the picture on her phone, which was on a gazebo in a rose garden. “I looked up the address and it’s actually near the park that’s close to the old school house. She says she wants to have a tea party there with me.”

“So, are you gonna go?!”

“I guess I should.. It’d be disappointing for them to get stood up like that.”

“Oooooh, this is so amazing~” Anna hugged the girl tightly. “Congratulations~”

“T-Thanks, I guess.”

“Annya~” A new voice chimed in as Miyawaki Sakura came by, waving to her best friend.

“SAKURAAA~~~” Anna rushed to the cherry blossom girl and hugged her, spinning her around. “Nee, nee, guess what?? Meru-chan’s going on a date!”

“Really??”

“That’s what she said!” Anna dragged her best friend to Meru’s side. “Show her the text!”

Meru did what was told and showed Sakura. When Sakura saw what was on the text, her face turned slightly pale.

“Is that… the park near the old school building?”

“Yeah.”

“Meru-chan…” Sakura looked at Meru, a bit shaken. “Haven’t you heard the stories?”

“Stories?”

“Wait, what do you mean, Sakura-chan??”

“That building… it’s said to be haunted.”

“EEEEHH?!” Meru and Anna both exclaimed.

“People say that a ghost of a girl wanders through the area. I wouldn’t go if I were you.”

“O-Oh…” Meru felt a bit uneasy, looking back at her phone. Indeed, the garden and gazebo looked beautiful, but the thought of a ghost haunting the place was making her have second thoughts.

“Wait a sec! Who’s to say that your secret admirer is really the ghost girl? We don’t know for sure,” Anna said. “Plus, you just said you didn’t want to make her feel bad!”

“Well… yeah, I did say that.”

“Then you should go!”

“But--”

“But nothing! You need to go and see her!”

Meru looked back at her phone, looking at the message from her admirer.

“I have to go,” Meru murmured. “Thank you again, Annya.”

As Meru left, Anna and Sakura looked at one another.

“Do you really think she’ll be okay, Annya?” Sakura asked.

“I hope so,” Anna replied.

---------------------

Meru finally arrived at the park, standing in front of the entrance to the garden. She felt a bit nervous about walking in, debating on whether or not she should go. The words of Sakura talking about the ghost was making her feel anxious, but whenever she thought about Anna’s words or the messages from her admirer, it just made her keep going back and forth. She paced in front of the garden entrance, clutching her phone while holding it close to her chest.

“What should I do..?” she kept asking herself.

Just then, she could hear someone singing. She looked and saw a figure standing at the gazebo. A girl in a white dress and wearing a sun hat with a sunflower in it.

As if being drawn by the voice, Meru stepped through the gates and started walking down the garden path to the gazebo. The fragrance of the flowers completely surrounded her. Roses, lilies, lavender, poppies. All those different scents entered her nose and relaxed her mind.

She made it to the gazebo and saw the girl standing there, singing. When she felt Meru’s presence, she stopped and turned around to look at her, showing her face for the first time. Meru saw a cute girl who looked about her age with short black hair.

“You must be…”

The girl smiled. “I’m Izumi. Umemoto Izumi. I’m so happy to finally meet you, Meru-chan.”

Izumi pulled up a seat and gestured Meru to sit down. She did so and examined the table that was in front of her. There were tea cups set out, along with the teapot, sugar, and cream, and also various sweets like cakes and cookies.

“Wow~ these look yummy,” Meru said, smiling. “Did you make these?”

“Yes. I was hoping you would like them.”

Meru took one of the cookies and munched on it. Her eyes widened and she smiled brightly.

“I love them!” Meru kept munching the sweets, not noticing that Izumi was smiling as the girl enjoyed herself.

“I’m glad you’re happy.”

Meru looked and saw that Izumi’s eyes were filled with sadness.

“Why the long face? You should be happy, too.” Meru stood up to look at her. “Besides… you’re my secret admirer, aren’t you?”

Izumi nodded shyly.

“I loved reading your messages. They cheered me up when I was having a bad day.”

The short haired girl smiled. “That’s good. I’m glad I could make you happy.”

Meru then looked around at her surroundings. “But still… Why this place of all places?”

“Eh?”

“Why did you choose here to meet me? My friends said that this park was haunted.”

Izumi leaned against one of the pillars. “I can’t leave this place.”

“Why?”

“I don’t know, actually.” Izumi looked out into the field, where the old school building was present. “That was my school, y’know.”

“Really?”

“Yes… Actually, my last memory of being there was when…” Her voice grew softer. Meru could see her face growing more sullen.

“When?”

“I was waiting… to confess to the upperclassman I liked… But, he didn’t come… I kept waiting, and.. When I thought I saw him, I…!” Izumi then clutched her head, wincing in pain.

“Are you okay?” Meru asked with concern.

“Y-yes… my head just hurts whenever I remember that day…”

Izumi sat down, sighing heavily.

“I’m sorry…” Meru said. “I wish there was some way I could make you happy. After all you’ve done for me and made me happy…”

“Thank you for showing concern. But I don’t think you can do anything for me…”

“There has to be!” Meru urged. She stood up and started pacing, thinking of ideas. Then, it hit her. “I got it! Confess to me!”

“E-Eh?”

“The only way for you to be happy is if your confession gets accepted!”

“Do you really think that’ll work?”

“I know it will!”

“Well, okay. Let’s try it,” Izumi then stood up. She took in a deep breath before facing Meru. “Meru… there’s something I want to tell you.”

“What is it?”

“The truth is… for a long time now, I’ve really liked you.”

“Really?”

“Yes. Ever since I first saw you. I always had my eyes on you. For a long time, I would watch over you.”

“Thank you. I really like you, too, Izumi-chan.”

Izumi smiled, putting some of her hair behind her ear.

“So… one last thing.”

“Hm?”

“Can I…” Izumi started to blush before continuing. “Kiss you?”

“O-Okay…”

Izumi slowly walked closer to Meru, who closed her eyes as she approached her. Izumi leaned in closer and gently kissed Meru’s lips.

What was strange to Meru was that, she couldn’t feel Izumi’s lips. Rather, she felt as if something like a gentle breeze had brushed against them.

“Thank you, Meru. For everything.”

When Meru opened her eyes, she saw that Izumi was gone. And almost as if by magic, the sweets and tea that were set out on the table had disappeared as well.

“Eh..?” Meru touched her lips. “W-what was that..?”

She felt another gentle breeze and looked up to the sky. She somehow still felt as if Izumi was watching over her.

“Izumi-chan…”

Just then, her phone buzzed, and she got a new text.

“Thank you, Meru. I’ll always love you.”

Snap!

Jurina felt her mind spring awake, finding herself laying on a couch in her therapist’s office. She had just finished her hypnotherapy session, her mind waking up from the trance she was in. She slowly sat up, her eyes blinking furiously as she faced the woman.

“How do you feel, Jurina?” the woman said in a soft, calm tone.

“I feel… fine. Better than the last time, actually.”

“That’s good,” the therapist wrote down her notes, with a pen that had a red rose on the top of its lid. “The visions have calmed down greatly. We’re making progress.”

Jurina smiled a bit, adjusting her hair as she watched the woman write.

“You’re still taking regular medication?”

“Yes, ma’am.”

“Good. And I’ve noticed your journal entries have become much better. Things have calmed down up there, that’s a good sign. Maybe you can finally go back to writing.”

“I plan to, actually,” she said, receiving a smile from the woman.

“I can’t wait to see your official comeback work.”

“Thanks, Rena-san.”

She was diagnosed at age 11, when her parents noticed her vivid imagination. How she would play with creatures visible only in her mind, and how she would often refuse to play with kids in school and retreat to her “Wonderland”.

Middle school is when the situation grew drastic. Her nightmares and panic attacks were more violent. She developed mood swings and her grades were flunking. By the time she was 14, Jurina shut herself away from school, only wanting to stay with her White Rabbit, Cheshire Cat, and beloved Mad Hatter.

Treatments began a year after. Regular appointments with Rena, and three regular doses of medication a day. Morning before breakfast, afternoon or after lunch hours, and just before bed. Journal entries chronicled her progress. Visions of cats smiling grimacingly, animals in suits and dresses, flying pigs... And a wretched Queen of Hearts after Jurina’s head.

Almost 5 years now, and she found through her high school creative writing class that she enjoyed writing. No matter how vivid her hallucinations, she found comfort in sculpting worlds of stories on pen and paper.

At 17, she won the high school state championship for young writers. At 18, she published her first novel. She had an otherwise well career, if it weren’t for the delusions that held her back.

She had to take a break from writing. It seemed even when she was doing something she loved, Wonderland found a way to haunt her. No matter how hard she tried, she could hear the Mad Hatter’s singing, and the loud ticking of the White Rabbit’s clock…

------------------------

“That’s great, Jurina-san!” Sakura, a high school student and fond comrade of Jurina’s spoke as they sat in the cafe.

Sakura was a long time fan of Jurina’s work. She had the three novels she published before her hiatus, the second of which actually signed by Jurina herself. That was how they met, and they frequently rendezvoused in this coffee and fresh baked bread scented sanctuary ever since.

“I can’t wait to read your next novel! Kyaa, thinking about it already has me fangirling!”

“Hey, not so loud,” Jurina said, receiving a shy giggle from the girl.

“Sorry.”

“I’m glad you’re so patient, though. Social media’s constantly bombarding me with ‘When the hell are you going off hiatus?!’, so I decided to break away from that as well.”

“I must. I mean, your situation is very difficult. I don’t have AS myself, but… it must be hard to write when all you can think about is talking animals and mad people.”

Jurina looked around, before giving a smirk.

“Actually, can I tell you a secret?”

Sakura nodded silently.

“Before I went on hiatus, sometimes… I skipped my afternoon dose.”

“Y-you would?!”

“It helped me to… think. I always had an active imagination as a child. So, I just, every now and then, let myself give into the madness.”

“Now that I think about it, your third novel was a lot more surreal and strange compared to your others,” Sakura pointed out. “So… it was really because you gave yourself over to your delusions? You let yourself become.. ‘Alice’?”

“I just needed to control it, that was all. But as I was transitioning into college and into the responsibility of adulthood, I found the stress was making my hallucinations worse. So I had to take a break from writing and strengthened my prescription.”

“That sounds bad.”

Jurina gave her a reassuring smile. “Don’t worry about it. My mom helps me through it all, my teachers understand my situation, and Rena-san is extremely nice.”

“And you have me!” Sakura said with a wide smile, making the writer chuckle as she took a sip of her coffee.

“Right. And I have you.”

Tick... Tock... Tick... Tock…

Jurina’s ear twitched. She looked over and saw a cuckoo clock hanging on the wall just across the room. “Did they always have that? No, it’s new… How come I didn’t hear it till now?”

Tick… Tock… Tick… Tock…

The gentle swaying of the pendulum under the clock was mesmerizing. It was strangely reminiscent of the pendant Rena would use in her sessions. A metronomic swaying that was captivating her attention…

“Alice~”

Jurina shot her head back to Sakura. The high school girl was now dressed as the Mad Hatter, staring at her with wild eyes and a mad smile. An eccentric giggle escape her lips as she lifted up a teapot, pouring blood red tea into a porcelain cup which soon started to overflow.

“..rina-san?”

“Jurina-san,” Sakura nudged the girl, making her blink as the hallucination faded. The high schooler looked at Jurina worriedly. “Is everything alright?”

“Ah, yeah. I’m fine,” she said briefly as she took out her prescription bottle to take her medication.

-----------------------

“Where are you, Jurina?”

“I’m… in the street. Faces are blurred.. There’s no color…”

Meow~

“There’s a cat. I want to follow it…”

“Don’t follow it.”

But I want to know where it’s going..!

“Alice~”

“Someone’s calling me… Alice…”

“Don’t listen to them, Jurina. Say it with me. You’re not ‘Alice’.”

“I’m… not Alice.”

“Say it with certainty.”

“Alice, weren’t you told never to take orders from the Red Queen?”

“Hatter..?”

“Jurina, she’s not real. Say it. Say she isn’t real.”

“Alice~ Come, it’s time for tea.”

“You’re.. not.. real...”

--------------------

Jurina retreated to her room straight after dinner. The first thing she did was move to her desk and started brainstorming what she would write about. A full year without writing seemed to have dulled her creative gears in her head.

She sat, and thought, and waited for an idea to come…

Then thought, and thought, and thought some more. But no use.

She let out a small groan, tapping her pen against the wooden desk. She leaned back in her chair, looking out her window, and seeing a butterfly perched.

Butterfly… Caterpillar…

As she was staring, she saw how vibrantly blue the butterfly was, while the city was a monochromic grey.

Now that she thought about it, things around her were so boring. Lacking of any true excitement. No matter how peaceful and calm, it just didn’t feel right.

Only in her mind, in her dreams filled with delusions, was where the fun was. She didn’t really care how neurotic the White Rabbit was, how troublesome and tricky the Cheshire Cat acted, or any of the Red Queen’s temper tantrums.

So… why? Why was she letting herself give up Wonderland? Why did she let herself say the Mad Hatter was just a figment of her imagination?

“Because that’s what they want. Rena-san, mom… They want me to be normal.”

She decided to write about the world she had always envisioned in her mind. Her Wonderland… She wrote about the talking cats and rabbits, about the flowers that would sing and talk for hours. She wrote of a girl with butterfly wings having tea and discussing riddles with a mad man. And of other crazy visions like eyeballs with wings and giant mushrooms.

Why is a raven like a writing desk? Can you riddle me that?

“I haven’t the slightest idea.”

Without even realizing, words were trailing down the page. Images of her crazy and eccentric world were brought to life on the page. She could practically see the world around her changing as she let her delusional mind whirr in whimsy. And she completely forgot about her pills.

----------------------

“Alice… Why did you say such hurtful things?”

“I’m sorry, Hatter. It wasn’t me.”

“I know. Jurina wants to be normal. Because she knows that’s what everyone wants her to be.”

“It’s boring… I can’t be me. They’re going to erase you and make me ‘proper’. I’m not going to be able to see you or Rabbit anymore.”

“You know what I think we should do?”

“What’s that?”

“...Juri...re you awa…?”

“Why don’t we take
her head before she takes ours?”

Cuckoo!

Jurina’s eyes snapped open. She found herself on the floor, hearing her mother’s voice.

“Jurina! Are you up, sweetie?”

“Y-yeah, I’m up!”

Jurina sat up, seeing her room was a mess. Her pills were scattered across the floor, and on her desk, she saw the same phrase over and over on the white pages.

Let us be mad!

“Oh no…”

--------------------

Jurina bolted to Rena’s office, pounding the door in a panic. Once her therapist opened the door and saw her, she immediately became worried.

“Jurina, what’s wrong?”

“I-I don’t know what’s happening… Last night, I.. I was just writing and.. Suddenly, the hallucinations..! The visions..!”

“They came back? But you’ve been taking your prescriptions, haven’t you?”

“Yes, but, I don’t understand. I-I shouldn’t be having relapses! The pills should be working!”

“Calm down,” Rena said, holding the tense girl. “We’ll figure this out. Just relax. I’ll make tea, if you want.”

Tea.. Hatter..!

“N-no thank you…” Jurina declined, sitting down in her seat.

It was then that the phone rang.

“Sorry, I gotta take this,” the woman apologized before answering the call. “Hello?”

Rena’s voice drowned out as Jurina tried to calm herself, closing her eyes momentarily. She tried to focus on the ticking of the clock in her office. Maybe that would…

“Wait… since when was Rena’s clock so loud?”

Jurina opened her eyes and looked around. She couldn’t find a clock that could’ve been making the loud sound she was hearing. So where..?

Buzz buzz!

She then felt her phone vibrate. She looked and saw it was from Sakura. She quickly answered, seeing Rena still on the phone.

“Sakura?” she whispered. “I can’t talk right now. I’m with Rena-san, and--”

“Jurina?”

“What?”

Off with her head.

Jurina blacked out for a moment. But when she came to, she saw a horrifying sight. Her psychiatrist, Rena, collapsed on the ground. Her eyes wide and lifeless, and a pool of blood under her.

Her hands shook, until she saw the woman’s very blood on her hands. She breathed in sharply, her heart pounding in her ears.

“I… I killed.. Rena-san..!”

Blood, red as roses, took over her vision. Her mind overloaded.

“NOOOOO!!!!”

….

Someone kicked the door open. They waltzed in with a satisfied grin, their eyes laying upon the dead woman.

“The Red Queen has finally been dethroned,” the girl said as she picked up the rose pen, breaking it in half.

She then approached Jurina, who had fainted on the carpet. She smiled, caressing her face.

“Well done… Alice.

Jurina’s eyes opened. She saw the face of Miyawaki Sakura, smiling down upon her. However, her mind was calm and clear. She smiled back at her.

“Hatter.”

Mad Hatter’s Disease: A mental condition in which the subject experiences psychosis and psychopathic tendencies. They will act violently if their emotions are triggered, often have mood swings of manic happiness and anger, and are shown to be very smart and cunning, but unable to feel empathy or attachment to most people (or sometimes an unhealthy obsession toward one person).

You could say, it’s a variation of Alice Syndrome.
+++

One and a half years since they met. One and a half years ago, Sakura fell in love with Jurina…

No, she fell for the madness within.

She loved the Alice inside her. So of course, she couldn’t accept anyone trying to take away Alice. To take away the crazy would be taking away fun. And the Queen of Hearts was a killer of dreams. If she didn’t do something, she’d become just like everyone else, unable to think for herself and drained of all her individuality.

So, she did the one thing she knew she could do to save Alice; neutralize Jurina’s treatments.

It was all very simple. Sakura wasn’t just going to let the world turn her dear Alice into a mindless puppet obeying the Queen’s law. She needed to free her; she needed Alice to give into her madness. The Queen’s propaganda brainwashing needed to be broken. She needed to condition her. Reverse hypnosis.

Make sure the delusions are still present. A few triggers should do the trick.

“Poison mushroom” Don’t take the pills.

“Tick tock tick tock” Always be alert and aware.

“Off with her head” Kill the Red Queen and any of her subjects.

Make her accept who she is.

“Say it with me, Jurina. You are Alice.”

“I am Alice…”

“You can trust the Cheshire Cat.”

“How could I say no to that smile?”

“Would you like some tea?”

“I’d love some.”

Sugar pills to keep her from sleeping. Subliminal messages hidden in music.

And art. Sakura loved drawing and painting. She drew the world she envisioned, her paradise. A utopia for her and her Alice, Wonderland. And she made sure those images were engraved in Jurina’s mind.

“This is home, Alice. Wonderland is the only place we can truly call home.”

“Home…”

“Red Queen bad~, mad tea parties good~.”

“Down with the Red Queen! Off with her head!”

“That’s right. Off with her head! Hahaha!”

“Hehehe… Hahahahaha!”

Yes, all to protect Alice. Jurina was the Alice to Sakura’s Mad Hatter. And this boring world would soon be their Wonderland…

….

Purrr…

“Good cat…” Jurina smiled, a small giggle escaping her lips as she petted the dirty stray. “Let’s go home, Cheshire.”

She picked up the cat, unaware of the dirty looks being given to her and Sakura.

“Come, Alice, with the Queen of Hearts gone, someone has to tend to Wonderland,” Sakura said with a mad grin. “I think we’re the perfect ones in doing so.”

She held out her hand, which Jurina took with an affectionate smile.

“Let’s not be late.”

Dream Eating Monochrome Momo - MomoJuri

xxxxx

Jurina was told from a young age stories of a dream eater demon. A devil who could make people dream wonderful dreams, but then eat them up and turning their world black and white. It was a being not of this world, from a monochrome dimension where human dreams were a delectable meal.

Her mother always warned her, never leave her window unlocked; the dream eating devil could enter her room that way. And, if she ever met someone who had platinum white hair, not to trust a word they said.

That’s what she was always warned. However, on the night of her 20th birthday, she found that she was having trouble sleeping. She tossed and turned restlessly, unable to slip into slumber.

With nothing to do, she simply opened her window and looked out at the starry night sky. She thought maybe doing that, she’d eventually fall asleep. She closed her eyes, feeling the cool night breeze gently blow against her face.

Clink.

She opened her eyes, looking down. She saw a bottle of what looked like yellow star-shaped candies. On the bottle was a note.

“It seems you’re having trouble sleeping, milady. Take some of these, and sleep will come. -Momo”

Jurina looked around cautiously. She saw no presence of anyone stalking her in the darkness. It made her anxious, slightly paranoid. She wasn’t afraid of the darkness, and she never believed in monsters under her bed or in her closet.

What scared her was the mysterious appearance of this bottle. Was it the dream eater? How could she know for sure? Feeling shaken by the growing thoughts, she immediately shut her window, locking it.

She opened the bottle, pouring some of the tiny candies into her hand. She took one in between her fingers, eying it nervously.

“What if it’s poison… or a drug?”

She sniffed it, then licked it. There was a sweet taste present, a sugary taste like cotton candy.

Mustering up her courage, she finally placed it in her mouth, crunching it. “Sweet…” Her fingers twitched, taking hold of some more candies and eating them. The taste was addicting.

Then, Jurina felt a dizziness overtake her. Her eyes fluttered closed as she collapsed on the floor, fast asleep. She then dreamed of a tea party, with tea made out of starlight and those same star candies…

And a person in front of her with pointed ears and white hair.

Morning came and Jurina woke up in her bed, her mind in a daze. She wondered if what happened last night was all merely a dream. The bottle of candies was gone and her window was locked.

“That had to be a dream, right?” she bit her lip, staring at her window before unconsciously muttering a name. “Momo…”

---------------------

The next night, Jurina suddenly awoke from a nightmare. She gasped for air, sitting up from her bed as beads of sweat fell down her forehead. Holding her head, she slowly walked up to her window, opening it to let the cool air in.

She stared down at her hands, which were still shivering slightly from the shock of her vivid nightmare. She tried to calm her breathing, feeling her heartbeat as she started to relax again.

“Having trouble sleeping again, milady?” a voice rose.

Jurina’s head shot to the side, seeing a person with pointed ears and white hair. The person wore a yellow and black suit with a bowtie and fedora, wearing short white gloves and holding a white cane.

“A girl? Or, a boy..? No, they aren’t human,” Jurina gulped as the person approached closer to the window.

“You know who I am, correct?” the person asked, revealing a snaggle tooth visible.

“You’re… the dream eater demon. You’re Momo?”

“I’m glad you remembered.”

“So, that wasn’t a dream. Last night, you…”

“Did it help?” the devil asked, holding out her hand to reveal the same star candies from the previous night. “These gave you good dreams, didn’t they?”

“Y-yes… I will admit, they tasted sweet. And, I didn’t have any nightmares or any trouble sleeping.”

“Is that your way of saying thank you?”

Jurina was silent a moment before answering, “Thank you.”

Momo held their hand out, lifting the girl’s chin.

“Please, let me know if there is anything I can do for you. I won’t do anything bad; I just want you to have happy, sweet dreams.”

Jurina felt almost hypnotized by the devil. She knew of the warnings, but there seemed to be something swaying her thoughts. She recounted her nightmare to the demon, who listened to every word with care.

“Oh, poor girl,” Momo petted her head, stroking her blonde hair gently. “If you’d like, I can take away those nightmares.”

“You can?”

“Of course. I am a dream eater. I can eat up those nightmares and leave only the good dreams for you.”

Jurina felt her heart fluttered, a smile curving her lips. “Really?”

“Yes. Here,” Momo then held out her pinky. “We’ll make a pinky promise.”

The blonde girl took her pinky, wrapping it around the devil’s. After she did, Momo opened up her hand again, offering her more of the candies. Jurina immediately took them, humming in delight as she crunched the sweet candies.

Seconds later, she fell asleep in Momo’s arms. Momo waved her hand above the girl’s head, conjuring several black stars. She ate each one up like a cookie, licking her lips satisfyingly.

“Sleep tight, milady,” she whispered, hearing a soft sigh from the blonde’s lips.

--------------------

Soon, every night, Jurina would meet Momo at her window. She wiped away her nightmares, and in return, she blissfully slept with sweet, star-filled dreams dancing in her head. Fairytale-esque stories and desires from the depths of her heart.

Momo wasn’t a devil, she began to tell herself. If anything, they were an angel. She had fallen for temptation, mesmerized by the dreams she was shown.

Then, the night of a full moon came. Jurina waited excitedly, impatiently, as she wanted the best dream Momo could give her. Anything would do for her, even a naughty fantasy.

“Momo~” she called out the devil’s name.

She then saw the demon appear before her, flashing a devilish grin at her.

“It’s the full moon, milady. Do you know what that means?” she held her cheek, staring deep in her eyes. She smiled again, “Ahh… what beautiful eyes. Full of hope and color.”

Jurina’s wide smile slowly disappeared, hearing a hint of evil in her voice.

“Momo..?”

“I’m here to collect my payment.”

“P-payment? What are you talking about?”

“What? Don’t you know?” Momo stepped through the window frame, causing Jurina to back up. “Did you think my services would be free of charge?”

“But…”

“But, nothing,” she interrupted, silencing her. “We made a deal. A promise. I’d take away your nightmares and give you all the dreams you asked. You desired more and more, each night.”

Momo smirked, her eyes glowing yellow.

“And just as I planned, you have indulged yourself in your dreams. You’ve ripened them up to the perfect degree.”

“S-so… what are you going to..?”

“Hmm,” she held her chin, their faces so close, she almost thought they would kiss. “Why don’t I just take… all of them?”

Jurina’s eyes widened, her body freezing, unable to move. She soon felt as if her mind itself was being invaded. Like the devil was starting to paint over all of her thoughts, and slowly draining out her memories.

Her golden hair started to turn pitch black, her body losing all of its color and turning a monochrome black-and-white. Her eyes became empty, and lifeless, almost doll-like. She slowly fell to her knees, Momo holding a bright, glowing mass of stars circling in her palm.

She took the orb of light and gulped it down whole.

“Delicious~ You truly had lovely dreams, Jurina,” she commented. “Welcome to the monochrome world.”

The devil then disappeared, leaving Jurina alone, staring blankly at the open window.

She no longer thought. She couldn’t recall any memories. And when she slept, she no longer dreamed. No whimsical fantasies, no nightmarish visions. Her mind was completely empty.

And just like her appearance, everything reflected in her eyes was black-and-white.

The sequel to Mad Hatter! Enjoy~
============================================

White Rabbit - HaruSaku/JuriRuppi

+++++

Miyawaki Sakura, otherwise known as the Mad Hatter. A serial killer with Mad Hatter’s disease. And Matsui Jurina’s captor.

This girl was the White Rabbit’s target.

White Rabbit. A government special ops force that deals with neutralizing crime and stabilizing those who suffer from extreme mental illness. It was the White Rabbit who created the medicine to help those with Alice Syndrome.

Right now, Kodama Haruka, one of the youngest officers for White Rabbit, was assigned with one goal.

“Stop the Mad Hatter, Miyawaki Sakura, and free Matsui Jurina.”

“Would I have to kill them?” she asked her chief officer.

“If Mad Hatter threatens to kill you, then fight back if you must. But let no harm come to Jurina. We plan to send her to one of our top rehabilitation centers so we can treat her.”

Stop Sakura, at any cost, and free Jurina-san…

Haruka placed the tranquilizer bullets into her gun, strapping it onto her waist.

“I’m sorry… Sakura-chan.”

-------------------------

Jurina was an unaware victim, trapped in her own delusions. Her broken mind kept her hallucinating, not knowing that Miyawaki Sakura, her “Mad Hatter”, was orchestrating a plan to set off bombs all around Tokyo. To destroy the real world and reform it into their “Wonderland”.

She wasn’t confined in a cage or cuffed to the bed. The only thing Sakura needed was to keep Jurina in her delusions. Never let reality slip into her mind. She was “Alice”, and reality was threatening to kill her.

Sakura needed to destroy reality.

“Good kitty… good kitty…” she said with an empty smile, petting the cat that lay on the floor. She then picked up a rabbit doll, talking to it, “Rabbit, what’s the matter? You look wound up about something.”

Sakura looked over at the delusional girl, grinning.

“Good, Alice. Stay asleep in your dream land. You don’t need to wake up, to see what a nightmare reality is.”

She then heard a loud knock pounding on the door. Jurina’s eyes immediately shot up, staring at the door. Sakura’s eyes widened, stepping in front of Jurina.

“Here, Alice, have some tea,” she said, handing her a cup, “I’ll go see who’s at the door.”

Jurina just smiled, nodding at Sakura before sipping her tea. Before Sakura completely left the room, she glanced over at Jurina.

“Hatter… this tea tastes stra…” Her voice trailed off as she sat the cup down. Her eyes fluttering shut, she collapsed on the floor. The cat licked her face and curled up against her.

Sakura smirked, removing the hat on her head before walking to the door.

“Coming~” she called out innocently as she entered the living room. When she opened the door, she was surprised to see a face she hadn’t seen in a long time. “Haruppi!”

“Hey, Sakura.”

“It’s been too long! What are you doing here? I thought you were still in Hakata.”

“Summer break just started, so I thought I’d come visit you,” Haruka said, adjusting her glasses. “Speaking of, why are you in your uniform?”

“Oh, haha, I ended up having to do laundry. This is all I had to wear,” Sakura lied, her friend just giggling.

“You’re so weird, Sakura.”

She saw the girl about to approach her room, but stopped her.

“Hey, Haruka! Want me to make you something to eat? I recently bought some cake from the bakery; it’s really good!”

“Really?! I’d love some!”

“Alright. Just wait here, I’ll go get it.”

“Hai~”

As Sakura walked to the fridge, Haruka started looking around the apartment.

She must have Jurina locked in her room. That’s why she doesn’t want me going in there… Now where is her laptop?

“Here it is!”

She snapped back, turning to see the cake.

“Woah! It looks really good!” Haruka’s eyes sparkled. But behind her smile, she thought, I hope Sakura doesn’t suspect me… Otherwise, she might’ve drugged the cake.

“I’ve been pretty bored lately, so I’m glad you came over!”

“You sit down and turn on the TV. I’m gonna get us some drinks. You want tea?”

“Nah. Milk.”

“Alright.”

Once she saw Sakura leave again, she immediately whispered into her communicator watch, “Stay on guard, boys. I’m in. Once I give the signal, enter and subdue Mad Hatter.”

“Roger that, Kodama.”

She hid her watch as Sakura approached, hoping she wouldn’t notice the insignia of the White Rabbit on the face of it.

“Anything good on?”

“Hmm, let’s see…” Haruka flipped through the channels, her eyes quickly glancing at Sakura, and the food in front of them.

Okay, I need a plan. Sakura seems to trust me, so she probably hasn’t drugged the food. But I can’t let her find out I’m part of the White Rabbit. More importantly, I need to distract her long enough so I can get in her room and free Jurina. The question is, how?

“Ah! Look, Yokai Watch!” Sakura pointed out, humming in tune with the anime theme song. “This has gotten super popular at my school.”

“Mine too,” Haruka chuckled, looking around for a moment.

“Hm? You not hungry?”

“Ah, right!” Haruka grabbed her fork, picking up her plate to eat the cake. As she munched on the cake, the sweet taste of the cream hit her mouth, making her squeal. “Oishii!”

“Right?!”

The two chuckled as they enjoyed the anime while eating cake.

Nothing unusual with the cake. Good, she trusts me… I’m sorry for what I have to do, Sakura, but even though you’re my friend, you’re a criminal now. I need to do my job.

“Hey, Sakura, where’s the bathroom?”

“Oh, down the hall, to the right. It’s just beside my bedroom.”

“Thanks,” Haruka smiled, walking down the hall.

Sakura glanced back, watching Haruka go down the hall. She wanted to make sure she didn’t go in her room.

"Don’t go in… Don’t go in…"

She looked back, seeing Haruka open the bathroom door and locked it. She chuckled.

“Perfect. She’s none the wiser…” she chuckled. “Oh, Haruppi… I love you, but you truly are naive.”

BANG BANG BANG!

“Open up!” A loud voice called, making Sakura jump. “This is the White Rabbit!”

“Eh..?!” She got up from the couch, her body tensing. “How can this be? How did they know my location?! Did they track it from my laptop? No, that’s impossible!”

“Miyawaki Sakura, we know you’re in there! Come out with your hands up, and if you cooperate, no harm will come to you!”

She gritted her teeth, grabbing a baseball bat at the side of her couch. She gripped it tightly as she walked to the door, looking through the peephole. She could see men in white suits, the insignia of the organization they worked for on their chests.

"White Rabbit… Who sent you?!"

“Miyawaki-san, please! Unlock the door and let us in!”

Sakura growled, opening the door and immediately attacking the men in white. She swung her bat furiously, screaming as she violently fought them off.

“Freeze! Stop what you’re doing!” one of them said as they took their guns out.

Sakura just started laughing madly at them, continuing to swing her bat. She hit one of the men over the head, causing him to fall down, holding his bleeding head.

“Let us be mad… Hahahahaha! Let us be MAD! LET US BE MAD!!!” she laughed as she swung the bat blindly.

BANG!

She suddenly felt a sharp pain at her back. She turned and saw Haruka holding a gun, pointed at her.

“W-what…? Haru..ppi…?”

“Sorry, Sakura. I forgot to tell you,” she showed her watch. “I’m part of the White Rabbit, too.”

“No..way…” she whispered as she dropped her bat, falling to the ground.

Haruka sighed, putting her gun away.

“She’ll be knocked out for an hour or two. Jurina is in her bedroom, drugged. Transfer them both to their designated locations.”

“Yes, ma’am,” the men spoke. One picked up Sakura and carried her over their shoulder while two more went inside to retrieve Jurina.

Haruka knelt down to the man with the injured head, taking out a small spray bottle and spraying it on the wound to heal it. He hissed a bit before smiling at the young girl.

“Thanks, Kodama. You really are a prodigy.”

“Just doing my job.”

-----------------------

The next day…

“The bombs have been defused and Sakura is now locked up in our highest security prison. You did a job well done, Kodama. As for Matsui Jurina, we’ve already made plans to begin her recovery. She’s resisting us a bit, though. Perhaps you should regularly check on her.”

Haruka walked down the white hallways to the room where they were keeping Jurina. A padded room, where she could be monitored, and where she couldn’t get hurt.

“R-Rabbit..?! Cheshire..?!” she panicked as she tried to break down the walls of the room. “Where’s Hatter..?! Where are they..?!”

Haruka knocked on the door, making her turn around. She ran quickly to the door, holding onto the bars on the door window.

“Please, help me..!” she said while breathing quickly in her distress. “I don’t wanna be here..!”

“I know you don’t. But you need to.”

Jurina shook her head. “I want to be with Hatter..! Where is she..?!”

“The Mad Hatter… She did bad things. You won’t be able to see her anymore.”

The girl started to cry hysterically, leaning up against the door.

“No… no no no no no…” she whispered.

As she cried, Haruka reached out through the bars and touched her face. Wiping her tears with her thumb, she then handed her a rabbit doll. A doll that she owned and used to play with as a child.

“Rabbit..!” she hugged the doll tightly, petting its head.

“Jurina, I want you to listen to me,” she said. “It’s okay to go to Wonderland every once in a while. But if you always stay down in a rabbit hole, you’ll miss out on the world above you.”

“But… reality is scary. I want to always stay in a dream…”

“I understand that. The reason why people love dreams is because we only have them when we sleep. But they’re only precious if we wake up from them to go back to reality. If you’re always in a dream, even the vibrant colors you see will fade.”

She stroked her cheek gently, giving her a kind smile as she calmed down.

“It’s time to wake up, Jurina. You can’t stay in Wonderland forever.”

Jurina slowly nodded, still holding the doll close. Haruka then left, smiling in relief.

She’s going to be just fine. Once she recovers, she’ll be good as new. Of course, her Alice Syndrome won’t disappear completely. What she’ll need to do is learn how to balance her mind and not let the madness fully take over. A mix of sane and crazy, logic and imagination.

I’ll be the one to teach her that… After all, I have Alice Syndrome too.

Down the Rabbit Hole - Haruppi's Story

+++

When I was diagnosed, my parents sent me to a special reform school. This school was a place where students with special needs could go to get their education, and also be treated for whatever problems they might have.

It wouldn’t change, though. Autistics still have autism, bipolars are still bipolar, Alices still have Alice Syndrome. We just have to adjust ourselves, so we’re ready to go out into the world. Our conditions won’t go away; we learn to make due with them. To turn a negative into a positive.

----------------------

“Haruka-chan, this is Sakura. You two are going to be classmates in the Alice program.”

The first time I met Sakura, she was still innocent. Her Mad Hatter persona had not consumed her. She was a happy girl, and was honest. As the two of us were part of the Alice program, we spent a lot of time together. We were best friends.

“Wow~ Sakura-chan, that’s an amazing drawing!”

“Thanks!”

“What is it, exactly?”

“It’s an apple house.”

“Haha, how funny! I wonder what it’s like to live inside an apple.”

“As long as there are no giant worms! Hahaha!”

Our lessons throughout the day were normal. Sakura found them boring, always doodling in her notepad, which usually got her in trouble. And she also liked taking naps in the library. Gym wasn’t her best subject, either, and definitely not her favorite.

Me? Personally, my favorite class was music. I loved singing, even as a child. Singing was always what would calm me down.

“Sakura-chan, once we graduate from here, what do you wanna do?”

“Hmm, I dunno. What about you?”

“I’m not sure. I guess I’d want to do something that will help people. Maybe I’ll go to Tokyo University and study psychology, or maybe go to medical school and become a doctor.”

“That sounds amazing… Good luck, Haruppi.”

At that time… I still had no idea of what was really going on.

-------------------------

When I turned 15, my family was moving to Tokyo, so I couldn’t be part of the Alice program or see Sakura anymore. I’d be going to a new school, starting a new life. I wanted to say one last goodbye to Sakura…

Knock knock!

“Sakura-chan? Are you home?”

I opened the door, seeing a horrible sight. Sakura, standing in the kitchen… covered in blood.

“Sakura-chan..?!”

She just looked at me and laughed. Her eyes, which were once bright… were empty.

“What did you do? Sakura-chan…!” I walked in slowly, and saw Sakura’s parents lying on the floor, stabbed to death and bleeding out.

Their red blood stained the white kitchen floor… and the sight was making me sick.

“Haruka… Mama and Papa said that they were going to take me somewhere… Someplace to… ‘fix’ me… Hahaha…”

“Sakura-chan?”

“They were so blind! So stupid! I’m not broken… I’m not broken at all! Hahahahaha! I wasn’t going to let them take me from you… Alice.”

The person I saw in front of me… was no longer Sakura. She was the Mad Hatter.

“Alice, let’s run away! Before the Red Queen finds out!”

“Sakura, stop!” I tried to talk to her, tried to reason. “We need… to go to the police. You need help. Your AS is--”

“AS? Alice Syndrome? No… Hehe, no, Alice. I’m not an Alice. They misdiagnosed me!”

“Eh?”

“I’m the Mad Hatter! And we’re the rebellion! Up is down and truth is lies! Riddles are knowledge, and madness is all that keeps us sane!”

“Sakura?!”

“Don’t call me by that name!” she yelled angrily, slapping me. “Where are you, my Alice? What has the Red Queen done to you?”

“Sakura… I’m sorry!”

I ran away from her. I ran from my best friend… Or, really, what I was running from…

Was a stranger with my best friend’s face.

I ran to the nearest police station, telling them about what happened and what I saw. The incident had me shaking, my hallucinations started surfacing…

“Someone, get this girl some medicine and tea. Calm her down.”

After that, I was alone with another officer. We didn’t speak for a long time, he just sat and let me slowly calm down from everything that happened.

The first thing I asked was…

“Why did Sakura do this?”

The officer had gone through a background check, and told me everything I didn’t know about my best friend.

Sakura’s parents were abusive. They despised the fact that their daughter was mentally ill, and they were going to throw her into a mental hospital to try and make her “normal”.

It was an awful thought… It was horrible, how they treated her.

But…

“But she didn’t have to do that!” I started crying.

“I’m very sorry, Kodama-san.”

After all that happened, after all I learned about Sakura, I finally made a decision. I wanted to be the one who helps those suffering from their madness. I want to set them free before it’s too late.

So I joined the White Rabbit, at age 16.

---------------------------

Years later…

“I’m here to see Jurina-san.”

“Of course. She’s in the lobby.”

Jurina’s condition has gotten exceptionally better. She’s stable now and back to her old self, the only catch being she lost a year of her memory.

She doesn’t remember Rena-sensei’s death or about Sakura being a serial killer. I plan to tell her in the future, but not now.

The doctors say she’ll be discharged in a week, and back to her normal life.

I made it to the lobby and saw Jurina eating lunch happily.

“Ah! Haruka-chan,” she waved at me, seeing me approach her. “Nice to see you again.”

“You seem to be in a good mood.”

“Yeah. The doctors told me I could leave in a week, so I’m happy.”

“That’s great. I’m really happy for you.”

“And, I was wondering,” she set her spoon down, “We’ve been spending a lot of time together now, and I’d hate for it to stop once I’m discharged, so…”

“So?”

“How about after I leave in a week… could we go on a date?”

I blinked. “D-Date? Like, what boyfriends and girlfriend..?”

She just giggled. “Of course, I don’t mean the romantic kind! Just as friends!”

“Ah, right. If that’s the case, then I don’t mind at all.”

“Thanks. I really do like spending time with you, Haruppi.”

I nodded. “I like… being with you, too.”

Madness will never go away. But as a member of White Rabbit, and as someone with Alice Syndrome myself, I will act as a guide through this Wonderland.

Spirits After School - UhaRion

----

“Rion-senpai! Good morning!”

“What are you doing after school?”

“If you’re free, do you want to come to karaoke with us?”

Ryouha watched as some 2nd years were talking to a short boy with slightly messy hair. She placed her hand on her cheek, seeing him smile cheekily.

“Sorry. I already promised a friend of mine we’d spend the day together.”

“Ah! Could it be Furuhata-san?”

“She’s my childhood friend, after all. I promised her we’d go to the amusement park; she’s been excited for it.”

“Eh~? I’m jealous.”

“Maybe next time, though,” Rion smiled, waving goodbye to them.

“Rion-kun’s too nice…” Ryouha said aloud, but her words were heard by no one.

Sakae Ebi High, 2nd year Kitagawa Ryouha, is a ghost.

How she died or why she remains tied to the school she went to, she doesn’t know. But the ghost girl has grown a liking to the 3rd year, Azuma Rion.

He was goofy and energetic, like the protagonist of a shounen manga. And he was talented piano player. He’s been confessed to several times, but he doesn’t have a girlfriend. For the longest time, there were rumors of him dating his childhood friend, Furuhata Nao, who he’s always with.

Or at least, that’s what Ryouha knows. She can’t talk to the boy or anyone else. She’s merely an observer. She watches and listens to him play his piano after school, and always sees him spending time with Nao and walking her home in the afternoon.

“If I were still alive, I wanna do that with Rion-kun… Nao-san has it so good.”

For whatever reason, Ryouha decided to take a nap. Of course, as a spirit, she doesn’t feel tired and doesn’t need a sleep. She just wants a nap, nothing else.

Sitting down in her empty desk, her presence invisible to those around her, she closed her eyes for a short nap.

Hours later…

Ryouha woke up, looking around to see the classroom was empty.

“Eh..? What time is it?!” She stood up, looking at the clock. It was already after 3; after school classes had started! “Oh no! Rion-kun’s already..!”

She quickly ran towards the door, only, to her surprise, it opened and someone walked in. She was about to run into her, when…

….

“...ow! Ow~ that hurt!” Ryouha winced, slowly getting up from the ground. But, then she realized something.

...wait…

Hurt?

I’m a ghost! Why did that hurt?

She looked around for the person she had just bumped into, but couldn’t find anyone else in sight.

Was it my imagination..? No, I’m definitely sure I ran into someone…

Someone… who..?

She closed her eyes and remembered the face of the person who entered the room.

“...Nao-san? Hm..?!” She looked around again, but couldn’t find Nao. “Nao-san? Na… ah… Huh? My voice…”

She then noticed the bag on the floor just nearby. A mirror had fallen out of one of the pockets. Slowly, she reached out and took a look at herself in the mirror.

What she saw was Nao’s face in the reflection.

“Eh?!” Ryouha jumped back, looking down at her own body. “Nao-san’s uniform… Nao-san’s hair… Eh? So I possessed Nao-san?!”

She slowly got up, staggering a bit before pacing around.

“W-what do I do? How did I..?” She picked up the mirror again and looked. “I’m in Nao’s body. I’m Nao-san now, so that means…”

Then, Ryouha remembered Rion’s words from that day.

“I promised her we’d go to the amusement park…”

“Her date with Rion-kun..!” Ryouha’s heart skipped a beat. A familiar feeling, but one she hadn’t experienced in a while due to lacking a living body. She nervously thought of what to do, tried to separate her spirit from the girl’s body, but to no avail.

If I can’t leave her body, then that means…

“Nao-chan?” Ryouha then heard a voice call out. She turned around and saw one of Nao’s classmates, Matsui Jurina. “There you are.”

“J-Jurina...san?”

Jurina raised a brow. “‘-san’?”

“Er, sorry! Jurina-chan, I meant!” She quickly replied, trying to act like Nao. Jurina just tilted her head, more confused. “...Jurina?”

Jurina nodded; that was correct.

“So? What did you forget?”

“...Eh?”

“You came in here saying you forgot something. What was it?”

“Uh, um…” Ryouha looked around before walking to the girl’s desk. She opened it up to hide her face. She looked inside, trying to find whatever it was Nao forgot.

“Hey, you dropped your bag,” Jurina then said.

“Ahh! Thanks!” Ryouha grabbed it, quickly looking around inside. “Cell phone, check. Homework, check. Hand mirror, check. What else is there..? Mou...”

“Could it be, you lost your tickets to the amusement park?”

“Eh?!” Ryouha looked up, seeing a grin from the girl.

“Didn’t you say you’d keep them in between your music sheets so you wouldn’t lose them?”

“My music..?” Ryouha pulled out the sheet music book from her bag. That’s right, Nao-san’s part of the brass music club…

She opened it up and saw the two tickets in between the pages.

“Ah, thank goodness… Nao-san, thank you for being so responsible.”

“You’re thanking yourself?” Jurina chuckled, flustering the ghost.

“A-ah, I’m thanking my ‘past’ self! Hehe.”

“Whatever. Have fun,” Jurina said with a pat on the girl’s back. “I’m off to track meet!”

“Thanks.”

After Jurina left, Ryouha gathered the girl’s things and left the classroom. Wondering where to find Rion, her first instinct was to look in the music room to see if he was playing piano.

She could already imagine the boy sitting at the piano playing. It was making her heart race, wondering how he’d react when he saw…

Ah… right.

I’m in Nao’s body.

It wouldn’t matter how he reacts. It’s not to me.

She walked into the music room, only to find the boy was not there.

“Eh..? Did he already leave?”

Ryouha ran out into the hall again, dashing down the stairs toward the exit. She then stopped, seeing the boy leaned up against the shoe lockers.

“Ah! Nao,” he waved with a kind smile. “There you are. You ready?”

“I… y-yeah,” Ryouha looked down, gripping onto Nao’s bag.

“Hm? What’s wrong?”

“I’m… just excited,” Ryouha smiled. How would Nao-san say it..? “I love spending time with Rion!”

She then wrapped her arms around his, surprising him.

“Eh?!”

“Let’s go! Today, you’re going to spoil Nao!”

Even if it’s not me… I want to enjoy this day to its fullest.

Nao-san, forgive me! I’ll be Rion-kun’s date today!

-------------------------

Ryouha’s first step outside of the school in a long time. And her first date with her beloved crush, Rion. And, of all places… the amusement park she always wanted to visit.

“Uwaa! Everything looks so much fun!”

“You’ve been here before, right?” Rion asked. “With Jurina and the others.”

“Ah… O-oh, right. I have. But, it’s different cuz I’m with Rion, now!”

“So, what do you wanna do?”

“Hmm…” Ryouha looked around, then seeing a roller coaster. She gave a mischievous grin. “Rion will do whatever Nao wants, right?”

“Uh… yeah?”

She then pointed at the roller coaster. Rion’s face grew pale.

“Eh?”

“Come on, I dare you! We’ll ride together, front seat!”

“N-Nao, what’s gotten into you today?!”

“Rion is gonna spoil me today! You’ll do whatever I want, right? So come on!” She took the boy’s hand, dragging him towards the ride.

“Hey, hold on! Nao!”

ZOOM!!!

“UWAAAAAAAAA!!!!”

“KYAAAAAAAAAAAA!!!!”

I… regret my decision.

...

“Uwa… that was crazy fast.”

“Hehe, sorry,” Ryouha chuckled, only to receive an evil laugh from the boy. “Rion..?”

“I said I’d do whatever you want, but… you should be punished.”

“Huh?”

“UGGGHAAAA!!!”

“GYAAAH!!! GHOST!!!!” Ryouha clinged to the boy tightly as they ran through the haunted house.

“This is what you get for forcing me on that roller coaster!”

“I’m sorry! I’m really, really, deeply sorry!”

“GRUUUUEEH!!!”

“KYAAAAAAAAA!!!”

“Rion, you’re so mean!” Ryouha repeatedly pounded the boy’s shoulder. “I had no idea you could be so cruel!”

“Huh? Even after all the times I teased with you?”

Ryouha was scared… No wait, I can’t say that.

“Nao was scared…” she gave him puppy eyes, the boy taken aback.

“I… I was just kidding, Nao,” he quickly apologized. “I’m sorry. Were you really that scared?”

“Rion, you meanie…”

“I-I’m sorry! I… How can I make it up to you?”

Ryouha pouted, then.

“Ice cream!”

“...Huh? Come again?”

“Buy me ice cream. Then I’ll forgive you.”

Rion sighed out, patting the girl’s head. “You’re so hopeless…”

Rion-kun’s hand… is so warm.

After ice cream, the two went up to the Ferris wheel. Ryouha stared in awe at the sight down below, giggling seeing everyone so tiny from up above.

“It’s nice, huh?” she then asked Rion, who seemed to be staring off into space.

“Ah… Oh, yeah! It is!”

She raised a brow, getting up from her seat and scooting beside the boy. She laid her head on his shoulder, closing her eyes.

“Oi… you must have a fever or something. You’re not like yourself at all, today.”

“I’m just happy being with you.”

“We’re always spending time together at school. What makes today so different?”

“Because…” Ryouha looked up, seeing his confused look. Of course she knew, Rion was seeing her as the girl she was possessing. Nothing more, nothing less.

But the happiness she was feeling right now was real. It didn’t matter who she was.

“I like just being around you… even if you don’t notice,” she whispered the last part. “I like you, Rion…”

The boy was silent. Ryouha just felt another pat on the head, making her heart warm.

If only we could stay like this…

Time, please stop. I want to savor this feeling.

------------------------

Ryouha held onto the pink teddy bear Rion had won “her” at a carnival game, the two of them walking down the street into the city.

“Hey, there’s a purikura!” the boy pointed out. “Nao, you want a picture?”

“Sure!” she smiled widely, following him into the booth.

“Hai! Say cheese~”

Click!

“Oooh, they turned out really well,” Rion smiled, Ryouha giggling at the pictures and silly faces they were making.

“Now we’ll always remember today!”

“Yeah. Today was a lot of fun.”

“Yeah! It was the best!” Ryouha giggled, still holding the bear.

She then wondered… when would this end? When would her spirit be lifted from the girl’s body?

Once that does happen, she thought, she’ll be back to being a spirit. And she’ll probably never go on another date with Rion like this.

“I’m glad you enjoyed it.”

“Y-yeah…”

“I’ve been so busy with after school piano lessons, that this is the first time in a long while we’ve spent time together. So, I’m happy.”

“Me too…”

“But…”

Ryouha turned around, seeing Rion was suddenly leaning close to her.

Eh?! A kiss?!

She closed her eyes, waiting for impact…

“You aren’t Nao, are you?”

“...What?” Ryouha opened her eyes, seeing a smirk on the boy’s face. “What did you… just say?”

“You aren’t really Nao… I can tell.”

“W-why would you say tha--”

“The real Nao knows, I have keen sight. Especially, to those things invisible to others.”

W-what?! Rion-kun can see… spirits?

“Your aura is a little different. And plus, it’s easy to tell that you’re acting very unlike the Nao I know,” Rion chuckled. “So no need to hide it anymore. Tell me your real name.”

Ryouha clutched the bear, blushing a bit.

“It’s… Ryouha.”

“Ryouha-chan. Why did you possess my childhood friend? Could it be, you were jealous and wanted a date with me?”

“N-no! It was all by accident!”

Rion just chuckled again, making her pout.

“It’s true!”

“Sorry, sorry. But, whatever the reason, today was still fun. As long as you were happy and had fun today.”

“Aren’t you upset I got in the middle of your date with Nao-san?”

“I’ll find some way to make it up to her. I wonder how I’m going to explain this, though. I’ve never had a spirit possess my best friend before, hehe…”

Ryouha sighed. “I’m so relieved…”

“Eh?”

“Hmm, I wonder… I just feel like, a weight’s been lifted off me.”

“Mind if I ask a question?”

“What?”

“When you were still alive, did you ever go on a date?”

Ryouha shook her head.

“I always wanted to… I had a person I liked, but it ended up not working out.”

“Will you let me hear your story?”

Suddenly, with those words, something was unlocked. As if it were like any other conversation, Ryouha began telling him about the last thing she could remember of her crush.

My crush… my first love…

Miyazawa-sensei…

“I like you, Sae-sensei!”

“Ryouha-chan, you’re a nice kid. But, I’m sorry…”

A rejection… and regret mixed with her heartbreak.

Why did I confess..? I knew it was impossible..!

And then, suddenly…

“Sae-sensei!”

HONK HONK!!!

“Kya!” Ryouha held her head, her memories suddenly flowing back to her.

I saved Miyazawa-sensei… from dying in a car accident.

“I see… Is that why?”

“I-I… think so.”

Rion rubbed her back, comforting a ghost. Ryouha just started crying into his chest, clutching his jacket.

“Are you satisfied? Remembering what you did to save his life? And going on a date with me?”

“Satisfied..?”

“Does it lift your spirit?”

She looked up, seeing him smiling kindly.

“...Not yet.”

She then stood on her tiptoes, leaning forward and stealing a kiss on the boy’s lips.

Now I’m satisfied…

….

“Woah!” Rion caught Nao’s body as she collapsed in his arms. He grinned, looking up at the sky. “Guess that was your last wish, huh? Was it your first kiss… Ryouha-chan?”

“Hmm… Hm..?” Nao slowly stirred, looking around confused. “Huh..? Rion-kun..? Why are we outside..?”

“Welcome back.”

Nao furrowed her eyebrows. “Welcome back? Did I go somewhere?”

She then saw the pink bear in her arms, and the night sky above her. Rion just chuckled.

“Eh?! Ehh?! What time is it?! The amusement park?!”

“Sorry, Nao. There was a bit of an intruder on our date.”

“What are you talking about? What happened?!” Nao shook the boy’s shoulder.

“I’ll explain on the way home, come on.”

“Hey, wait~”

Ryouha’s spirit watched from above the Sakae Sunshine. She smiled seeing Rion teasing Nao whilst the girl clung to him for answers.

“Nao, you’re a lucky girl. Treasure him, okay?” she whispered with a smile before her body disappeared into starlight.

And yes, Rion-kun… That was my first kiss.

Forget-me-not and the firefly - YukiNee

During the summer of my senior year, a transfer student came...

I can’t remember when she arrived. But I was aware of her presence.

She was beautiful and mysterious, like a wildflower.

The strumming sound of an acoustic guitar could be heard among the cries of cicadas in the summer heat. A young girl was humming a tune to herself while writing down some notes in a small notebook she had.

It was a cycle, back and forth, she would strum the same few chords, stop to write something down, and back to strumming. She experimented with the different chords, with her voice, with the tuning of the instrument. In her own little bubble where no one could break her concentration.

Meanwhile, not too far from her, a girl stood under the comforting shade of a tree that stood just a few feet away from where the other girl sat. She watched her from afar, the transfer student whose name she didn’t know. A girl with a fierce gaze and wild beauty…

“Marigold…” she muttered. Yes, this transfer student’s radiance reminded her of a marigold. Vibrant and loud, event without saying a word.

“Hey. It’s rude to stalk people like that, y’know?”

Her voice broke Yuki away from her thoughts. She hid behind the tree as the nameless girl turned her head.

“I know you’re there! Just come out already!”

After a few seconds, she peered her head out. She tucked back her short brown hair, stepping out from behind the tree with a shy, guilty expression.

“Do you like it?”

“Eh?” Yuki blinked at the girl’s question.

“My guitar playing. Did you like it?”

Shyly, Yuki just nodded.

The girl grinned, a soft chuckle escaping her lips.

“Hey, why don’t ya come and sit? Here,” she patted an empty spot on the grassy ground, an open invitation for her to sit beside her.

Yuki stepped out into the blazing sunlight, shielding her eyes as she walked over and sat beside the girl with the guitar.

“Um… can I ask your name?” she asked as the girl went onto flipping through the pages of her notebook.

Without looking up, she responded, “Why?”

“‘Why’..? Does there have to be a reason?”

“We’ve never talked before. I figured you weren’t that interested in knowing about me.”

“That’s not exactly the case…” Yuki looked down, “I just haven’t had the chance to… The truth is, I really want to get to know you better.”

“Is that so…” she said while putting down her notebook. “I wonder why people are always so curious…”

“Huh?”

“Nothing. Nevermind,” she smiled again, a more grimace smile.

“So, what’s your name?”

“It’s Sayaka. Yamamoto Sayaka… If I were you, I wouldn’t try too hard to remember me.”

“What? Why?” Yuki raised a brow.

“Don’t mind it now,” she simply answered before she began her strumming again.

-------------------------

“Eh? Who’s Yamamoto Sayaka?”

“The new transfer student.”

“Oh, her. Why are you hanging out with her? She seems more like a loner.”

“Why not? I want to be friends with her. Plus, she’s a good singer.”

“Eh? Singer?”

“She’s always playing her guitar and singing. I’ve been watching her.”

“Yuki… are you a stalker?”

“Oi! No I’m not!”

“Yamamoto-san,” Yuki walked over to where Sayaka was sitting in the gym. Their classes were playing volleyball against each other for P.E., so it was a rare chance they got to interact.

“Kashiwagi… right?”

“You can just call me ‘Yuki’. Here,” she handed her a water bottle before sitting down.

“Why are you sitting here?”

“Why not? I’m just resting.”

“Don’t you want to sit with your friends?”

“You’re my friend, aren’t you?” Yuki tilted her head. The girl just sighed out, wiping her neck with a towel. “Aren’t we..?”

“You shouldn’t be so involved with me,” she said coldly.

“Why?”

“Because you already have friends. You don’t need to hang around me.”

Yuki pouted at the girl’s stubbornness. She decided to fight fire with fire; if Sayaka was going to give her the cold shoulder, then she’ll do the same.

She puffed an angry sigh and turned her face away from Sayaka. “How mean…” she muttered.

They just sat there, neither saying anything. Sayaka glanced over, seeing the other girl trying her hardest to give her the silent treatment.

Suddenly, she just started laughing, confusing Yuki. Wasn’t she just trying to push her away? Was she not annoyed with her?

“What’s with you?!” Sayaka said as she laughed. “You really are an odd one!”

“Huh? Odd?! What’s that supposed to mean?!”

“Hehe, you! Kashiwagi! You’re so weird, I like it!”

“H-huh?! I’m not--” Yuki’s face flushed red, a mixture of confusion, embarrassment, and anger.

“I get it now,” Sayaka smiled widely, looking up at Yuki. “You were trying to get my attention just now! Weren’t you?”

“So? That’s no reason for you to laugh at--”

“Hey, Kashiwagi,” she interrupted her, standing up from her seat. “Will you help me with something?”

“What..?”

“Songwriting.”

----------------------

Ever since then, Yuki would meet up with Sayaka in her free time to help her write a song. She got to hear her guitar strumming and lovely singing voice all day. For one and a half weeks, she was blessed with hearing her perfect singing…

….

“If only I could stop time, the summer that I spent with you is ending soon…”

“Sayaka-chan, it’s beautiful!”

“Really?! I just made it up!”

“Look! A firefly!”

“Wait up! Yuki!”

“Kashiwagi,” Sayaka poked the girl’s cheek, waking her up from her nap. Apparently she was so soothed by her singing and the summer heat, she dozed off.

“S-sorry!” she quickly apologized.

Sayaka chuckled. “Did you sleep well?”

“Well… yeah.”

“Good. Now, tell me what you think of these lyrics,” she slid the notebook to Yuki from across the table. Yuki read out the lyrics she had written down.

“Shining brightly and disappearing, fallen in love, I am a firefly…” she smiled reading them. “I like it.”

“I think a summer themed love song would be perfect for the upcoming festival.”

“I can’t wait~” Yuki couldn’t help but feel her heart flutter. “Shaved ice and fireworks… All sorts of different snacks and fishing for goldfish… I wonder if we can do it all in one night?”

“Huh? We?”

Yuki saw Sayaka furrow her brow.

“Yes, we. You and me. Aren’t we going together?”

“Oh…” Sayaka frowned. “I don’t think… I want to go.”

“Eh? Why not?!”

“There’s no one else I’m really friends with besides you… So why bother going? I’ll have no one else to talk to.”

“But you can make friends at the festival! Don’t you want that?”

“Sure I do. But--”

“But what?!” Yuki stood up from her seat. “What’s stopping you?! Why do you always do this?!”

“Yuki?”

“You always push everyone away and keep to yourself, but you want to make friends, don’t you?! So why won’t you? Are you afraid of something?! Or do you just not like me?!”

“It’s not that at all, Yuki!”

“Then what?! Just tell me the truth!”

“Because it won’t matter once I--!” Sayaka covered her mouth before she could finish.

“Once you what?”

Angrily, Sayaka got up and stormed out of the room, not saying anything. In the silence, Yuki hugged her knees and started to cry.

“Why..? Why does she always act like this?”

-----------------------

“Don’t go… please.”

“I’m sorry.”

“I won’t forget! I swear I’ll keep our promise!”

“Really… I’m sorry…”

“I absolutely won’t forget! No matter what! I won’t forget! I won’t...”

“I won’t forget… I won’t forget..!”

“Yuki, honey~” Yuki’s mom came into her daughter’s room, nudging her slightly. “Come now, wake up. Just because it’s summer break doesn’t mean you can sleep through the whole day.”

Yuki groaned, her eyes wincing at the bright sunlight.

“Ah, that’s right… Tonight’s the festival,” she then thought, bringing a lonely feeling as she remembered her fight with Sayaka. “Why was she so against it..?”

“Oh, honey, what’s the matter?” her mother then asked.

“Huh?”

“You’re crying.”

Yuki touched her face, seeing her cheek was damp with tears. Indeed, why was she crying? Was it a dream she had?

….

By the time the festival started, Yuki was able to meet up with some of her classmates and spent most of her time with them. She did her best to forget about her fight with Sayaka. Even though she wanted to have a fun time at the festival, she still felt lonely.

As her friends were chatting, she took a sparkler in her hand and lit it up. Kneeling down at the ground, she watched the sparks fly while thinking about Sayaka’s song.

She hummed it to herself, thinking back to when she first met Sayaka and…

“...Huh?” she suddenly blinked several times. “When I first met Sayaka..?”

She tried to think. She tried to remember. But no matter how hard she tried, she somehow couldn’t remember how she first met the girl.

“N-no… I have to remember… what she said to me…”

She hummed the song again, trying to jog her memory. She tried to remember how the two spent time together in…

“Eh..? What were we doing then?” she rubbed her temple, her head pounding. “We were… writing that song… That song… The lyrics..!”

The sparkler started to fade, the glowing ember falling onto the dirt. Yuki tried to think of the lyrics, but the words themselves seemed to blur and fade from her mind like dying embers of a flame.

“No, no, no! Why can’t I remember?” she held her head, fighting back the burning sensation of tears in her eyes. “Why..? Why..?!”

“Yuki?” One of her classmates called to her. “What’s the matter?”

“..Sayaka…”

“Huh?”

“I need to find Sayaka..!” she screamed as she stood up.

She saw her friend look at her with a confused expression.

“Yuki… Who’s Sayaka?”

….

“Yuki, if something ever happens and you feel lost, go to the forest where the fireflies gather. I’ll be there.”

Yuki ran as fast as she could. Holding her sandals in her hands, she ran and ran, the bottoms of her feet covered in dirt and grass.

“Who was it..? Someone said to me… I should go here.”

She remembered a distant dream from her childhood. Of a girl she played with among the green fireflies.

“That girl… she and I… we were…”

“Do you really promise you won’t forget?”

“Yes… I made a promise to her! Why did I forget her?!”

As she went in deeper, she could hear a song being sung. Yes, that song she was trying to remember. A song that was so familiar but so unfamiliar, too. A song she felt like she heard it many times but was also hearing it for the first time ever.

“This song… she always sang it!”

She finally reached it. The darkest part of the forest, where fireflies glowed in bright green and lit up the trees and grass around them. Standing there was Sayaka, holding a small flower.

“Why…?” Yuki finally said as she caught her breath. “Why can’t I remember… when we first met?”

Sayaka didn’t say anything. She looked at Yuki with a lonely gaze.

“I can’t remember the conversation we had during P.E.… I can’t remember the lyrics to the song you wrote… I can’t remember our fight..! Why am I forgetting all these things?!”

“Because summer is ending soon…”

“Sayaka!” Yuki held her shoulder, tears welling in her eyes again. “Why… Why am I forgetting you?”

Sayaka made a grimace smile.

“Don’t cry, please. It’ll only make it harder.”

“What? Make what harder?” Yuki lowered her hands. “None of my classmates remember you… No one from school recognized your name when I asked them if they knew where you were?! Why did everyone--”

“Yuki,” Sayaka held the girl’s hands. She could feel a warmth resonating from her palms that seemed to calm her panic. “I can’t stay…”

“Eh..?”

“I can’t stay in this place. I don’t belong here,” she spoke in a melancholy tone. “I never was meant to.”

“What are you talking about?”

“I’m not from this world.”

Yuki stood puzzled, her eyes squinted slightly trying to wrap her head around what the girl in front of her was saying.

“I don’t exist in this place. I’m from a place that mirrors this one, a reflection of this world. A parallel world, is what you may call it.”

“A parallel world.”

“It’s very similar to this world. But in that world, you were no longer with me. In that world, we used to play and have fun. But then, one day, you left that world and I couldn’t be with you anymore.”

“Left…? So I--”

“Yeah…” Sayaka frowned, lowering her head. “I missed you so much. So I wished one day that I could go to a world where you weren’t gone. And my wish came true…”

Sayaka’s grip tightened. The small flower in her and Yuki’s hands was threatened of being crushed if Sayaka didn’t let go. She turned her gaze away.

“But, in this world, you and I aren’t friends. In fact, I never existed to begin with. So my time in this world is limited to just one summer every few years. And when that summer ends…”

“Everyone forgets you,” Yuki answered, a pain welling in her heart. “That’s what happens, right?”

“If you want to know the truth,” Sayaka continued. “This isn’t the first time we met in this world. It’s actually the second time. We first met when you were a kid, and you came from Kagoshima to spend summer in Tokyo and met me.”

Yuki’s heart skipped. She remembered that summer well, of how she spent time with her parents. But she couldn’t remember meeting Sayaka.

It was a blur, even though everything else about it was clear.

“You promised me that if you ever came to Tokyo again, you would find me and we’d play again. You promised you wouldn’t forget about me, even though I said it was impossible.”

Yuki began to cry as Sayaka hugged her.

“I’m sorry… Really, I’m sorry,” she whispered, stroking her hair. “I wish I could stay longer. I wish I could stay here with you. But I can’t exist here.”

“D-don’t go… please…”

“I have to. As much as it hurts, my time here is up. I have to go back to that place. And then, once I’m gone, no trace of me will be left. You won’t remember--”

“No!” Yuki shouted, hugging Sayaka back strongly. “I won’t forget!”

Sayaka’s eyes widened. The green fireflies’ light embracing them.

“I absolutely won’t forget! I swear I won’t! So the next time you come back, I’ll remember who you are! I’ll make sure of it!”

Tears fell down her face, a bitter laugh escaping her.

“Idiot… You said that last time.”

“I promise… I won’t forget this time. I won’t forget.”

I won’t forget.

I won’t forget.

I won’t…

….

“Yuki! There you are!” Yuki’s classmates approached her as she walked towards them. “Where’d you run off to?!”

“Sorry…” Yuki smiled slightly. “I’m not really sure why I ran off either.”

“C’mon, the fireworks are starting!”

Yuki followed her friends to the top of the temple, until she became aware she was holding something in her hand.

She unfolded her fingers and saw a small flower. A forget-me-not.

“Why do I have this..?” she thought as she placed it in her pocket.

As she was walking, she began to hum the melody of a song.

“Huh? Yuki, what are you singing?”

“Hm… I don’t know. I guess i just made it up.”

….

I don’t know why or how, or even when

But, I began to sing a song

About a “firefly” who fell in love

I believe that this song was for someone important

So I’ll keep singing, until I remember.

This was so sad but so good at the same time.
How exactly did Yuki disappear from the other world? What kind of tragic end did she meet?
It's very heartwarming to see that Sayanee gets the chance to see Yuki again. Even though she doesn't remember her.
Hopefully, the next time they meet, Yuki will be able to remember Sayanee.

So~ yeah! Enjoy! lol

Part 1 - Eden's Apple *Naachan's POV*

xxxx

Things dear to you…

People dear to you…

You must protect them…

No matter what…

February 4th. Today is cold, and the weather report calls for flurries of snow in Tokyo. Today is another peaceful day. Me and my beloved Yuu-chan are wrapped in a blanket together watching TV.

Ahh~ today, too. I have her precious smile all to myself!

“Nee~ what are you grinning at?” she pokes my cheeks and chuckles.

“Sorry! It’s just so warm…”

“Ahh, still, I want a kotatsu,” she pouts. How cute! I would absolutely buy us a kotatsu. If she asks me, I’ll buy 10 kotatsu!

“I’ll make some hot milk.”

“Thanks, Naa-chan~”

Today’s breakfast was hot milk. Dinner will be curry rice. Today is a lazy, warm, peaceful day with Yuu-chan.

….

February 14th. Today is Valentine’s day! That special day where girls make chocolate for the ones they love. Of course, I got up early to make chocolate for my lovely Yuu-chan!

I try not to make too much noise while she’s still asleep in the other room… Ahh! I wanna see her! I want to hurry and see her adorable sleeping face!

As soon as the chocolate was done, I tiptoed straight to her room.

“Yuu-chan~” I called out in a whisper, tapping her shoulder. “Good. Mor-ning.”

She stirred awake, her hair was slightly messy. But she’s still so cute!

Her sleepy eyes immediately lit up when she saw the chocolate! She started eating without any restraint. Even with chocolate getting on her face, she’s so cute~

Today was a sweet, happy day.

….

March 13th. Spring is just around the corner. Soon me and my adorable Yuu-chan will be able to see the cherry blossoms together! I can’t wait for that…

“Nee, nee, Naa-chan!” she calls to me across the room. “Look!”

“What?” I see her folding paper. Is she making origami?

“Tada~” she shows me a crane that she made. It’s so cute! And so well done!

“Wow, it’s really good! I wanna try too!”

“Here, I’ll show you then!”

Today Yuu-chan taught me origami. Today was a fun, carefree day.

….

March 30th…

“I’m going to the convenience store! What do you want?”

“Pudding, please!” I answer to her as she heads out the door.

“I’ll be right back!”

She’ll be right back… She’ll be right back… So why can’t I calm down? It’s only been 15 minutes. 15 minutes since I’ve not heard her voice…

I try to reason with my thoughts.

“There must be a long line at the convenience store…”

“Maybe she can’t find what she’s looking for…”

“She must have gotten lost since it’s so dark out…”

She’ll come back… She has to come back… My heart is racing…

Unable to swallow my fears, I reach for my phone and text her.

“Yuiri?”

Again… again… I must’ve sent 5 texts already..!

Where is she?!

I ran out of the apartment and found her in an alleyway. There was a man whose face I can’t see trying to assault her…

Get away… Get away from her!

Snap.

I can’t clearly remember what happened next. But when I came back to my senses, the man was collapsed on the ground, with a knife in his abdomen… My blood on his hands…

“Don’t touch her…” I remember saying over and over.

“Naa-chan…”

Yuiri… Yuu-chan’s crying. I immediately hugged her, comforted her. I kept telling her everything was going to be okay.

Those things that are dear to you…

They must be protected…

Or other people will try to hurt them…

So I must protect her…

Even if I must kill…

….

April 8th. Today is another peaceful day. With my beloved Yuu-chan, always by my side.

She never leaves my side. We must always go places together. With a red string tied around our fingers to keep us connected. Even now, I never leave the house without a knife.

Today we saw the cherry blossoms together! Yuu-chan was so lovely and cute in her yukata! She won me a water yoyo, too.

“Yuu-chan…”

I kiss her as the fireworks begin to go off. Her flustered face was so cute, I might die! Even when she got mad at me, I couldn’t help but find her so cute!

I love her! I love her so much! I love her…

I love her… more than anyone else.

I love her… so much… it makes me crazy…

No one else can have her… no one can touch her… No one must hurt her…

Yuu-chan is mine.

Today, too, mine and Yuu-chan’s happy, peaceful, lovey-dovey days will continue. Forever.

xxxx

A partial inspiration for this was the manga "Happy Sugar Life", a yuri manga Naachan herself has read and the main character of is a yandere. I also remember Nana saying during her interview for Koi Kojo that she wants to try portraying a character who has a dark side.

The idea for this came about when I was talking with @MayukiIsLife about writing a Keya fic with a yandere premise, but I jumped the gun and did YuuNaa anyways. lol

Yuiri's POV part will be out tomorrow! Be sure to leave a comment! Feedback is much appreciated!

Here's Part 2 with Yuiri POV!

xxxx

Part 2 - Candy Apple *Yuiri's POV*

xxxx

My girlfriend, Naa-chan, is a bit more protective than anyone else. She always worries about my wellbeing and takes care of me. We do a lot of things together, since she’s always afraid of leaving me alone.

Even so, I would never ask for a different girlfriend. I love Naa-chan!

….

Morning, 8:03. I wake up before Naa-chan. I smile as her ugly yet adorable sleeping face is so close to mine. I try to stifle my laughter as I hear her snore a bit. Looks like today will be another peaceful day…

Ding dong.

“Hm?” Who could that be?

I got up, not disturbing Naa-chan’s sleep, and went to the door.

(House rule #6: Always look through the peephole before answering the door!)

I peered out and saw a single police officer standing out the door. What could’ve happened? I opened it up and looked up at him.

“Yes, sir?”

“Is this the Okada residence?”

“Yes. I’m Okada Nana’s roommate and girlfriend, Yuiri,” I introduced myself, bowing to him. “Um, is something wrong, officer?”

“No. I just wanted to come and let you know, there was recently a break-in around this area. We’re taking care of the situation now, but be careful.”

“Thank you.”

After he left, I shut the door. When I turned around, Nana was standing there. I jumped a bit, gasping.

“Mou~ you scared me, Naa-chan!”

“Who was that?” That look in her eyes. That scary look when she becomes worried. I always hated seeing her get like that.

“The police came. He said there was a break-in and he wants us to be careful.”

After a pause, she sighed a deep breath and smiled. “Oh, that’s all?”

“Don’t worry. If it were someone suspicious looking, I wouldn’t have opened the door,” I hugged her to reassure her.

Naa-chan was always the type to overthink. She needs someone to calm her down when she gets hysterical.

“I’m okay. Don’t worry.”

After a few seconds, I felt her arms wrap around me.

“Let’s stay in and be lazy today,” I say to her.

“Yeah… Let’s do that!”

Naa-chan’s smile warms my heart. Alright! Today will be another worry-free, lazy Sunday!

-----------------------

Evening, 10:03. I fell asleep while watching TV. Naa-chan is fast asleep, her head resting on the table. I smiled and poked her cheek playfully.

I heard a loud bang on the door. The sound woke Naa-chan up in a daze.

“Yuu-chan..?”

Another bang at the door came. And another.

“Someone’s trying to break in…” I whisper. Naa-chan’s eyes grew dark.

“Go hide in the closet,” she said sharply. “I’ll deal with them.”

Nodding quietly, I ran to the closet and hid inside. I kept my breathing as quiet as possible, not moving an inch. I couldn’t come out until Naa-chan told me…

Naa-chan is a murderer. She’s killed people who have tried to hurt me or damage our peaceful life. Because she loves me… Because she wants to protect our peaceful, happy days.

It scares me. I’m always afraid the day may come when Naa-chan will be arrested…

Even so…

I still love her.

Even if she’s a murderer. I still love Naa-chan. Because that fact doesn’t change her as the Naa-chan I know.

The Naa-chan who always smiles at me.

The same Naa-chan who kissed me during the fireworks.

The very same Naa-chan who saved me when I was almost assaulted.

I won’t stop loving Naa-chan even if she’s a criminal.

Bang!

I hear the door crash open. I hear Naa-chan scream as she struggles with the burglar. And I can hear his screams in pain… along with what I can only interpret as a knife stabbing him.

After a while, it stops… And I only hear Naa-chan’s breathing.

I slowly opened the closet and peered out. I saw her on her knees with blood staining her pajamas. Her eyes were empty… The eyes of a killer.

“Naa-chan…” I knelt down and hugged her without a second thought to the blood on the floor or the blood on her.

Clink! She drops the knife, her arms limp at her side.

“It’s okay now, Naa-chan… We’re alright…”

However, soon after, the police arrived outside the door. Confused about the situation. They saw Naa-chan covered in blood, and the dead robber, and immediately connected the dots.

“Okada-san, we’re going to have to take you into custody,” he spoke calmly.

Naa-chan was silent, her expression blank as the cuffs went on her wrists.

Our peaceful days… were over.

-----------------------

Noon. Today I’m at the hospital, visiting Naa-chan. After the incident with the apartment break-in, our usual everyday life became a bit unusual for a while.

I couldn’t see Naa-chan as often as I could for a while, but soon after things were cleared up, I’m able to come and see her daily again. Always with flowers and homemade lunch. It’s starting to feel like it used to again.

Naa-chan was a murderer. But she killed in order to protect me.

She was arrested and put on trial. I defended her.

Naa-chan had to do some time for the murders she committed.

We could no longer live together. And she has to stay in this hospital for some time.

Even so…

Even so, it won’t change my feelings.

I’ll still come to see Naa-chan.

I’ll still come and spend time with her everyday.

And I’ll still love her. Because she’s my only girlfriend.

xxxx

Partial note: Another minor inspiration I had for this is a game called "Yandere-chan", an RPG where you can fall in love with a yandere. As you'd imagine, it can get pretty crazy, but there is a possibility to get a good ending, so I took inspiration from one of the game's endings.

Hope you all enjoyed this crazy short 2-parter! XD

So after watching a certain *older* anime, I wanted to write this. This is heavily inspired by that anime, and it's one I HIGHLY recommend because it's an experience that's different for everyone.

Oh yeah, also, this one-shot is a gender-bender! XD

Enjoy~

+++++

The Cruel Ritual of the Rose

Matsui Julio x Okada Nanao

+++++

“You have been chosen.”

Was I meant to take these words as a blessing? Or a curse?

“This is an invitation from the Council of Roses. If you so wish, go to the rose garden and face your opponent who bears the same Mark of the Rose as you. If you win, you will be one step closer to the Rose Princess.”

The Rose Princess… a mysterious, revered young maiden who no one has seen and no one knows about. She might not even be real. Or she is merely a face among the crowd who hid her identity for so long. Perhaps she is my closest friend, and has lied to me my whole life.

What kind of sick game is the Council trying to force me into? Is this some sort of test of my resolve as a knight of the Mark of the Rose? To see if I am worthy to bear my title? And they treat this maiden I’ve never known, a princess I’ve only ever heard of in fairytales and rumors, as a prize?

It’s cruel… This game. This ritual of the rose.

It’s cruel.

….

“Prince Julio, knight of the White Rose, I have come to challenge you for the hand of the Rose Princess!” My opponent spoke firmly to me, dressed in regal garb of the Blue Kingdom.

Okada Nanao, a knight of the Blue Rose crest. He and I were close friends when we were younger, but as we grew older and matured into knights, there’s been a distance between us.

Now we were rivals, enemies, who were forced to face one another for a common goal. The Rose Princess.

It’s too cruel… Indeed, too cruel. Who is it that made this game for me to fight against one of my closest friends?

I unsheathe my sword, facing him.

“Sakura,” I call to the young maiden behind me, dressed in a regal white dress on my kingdom. “The roses, please.”

“Yes, Julio-onii-sama.”

She walks to me, holding two roses in her hand. One white and one red. The red one goes to me, creating a bright shock of scarlet against my pristine, white uniform.

Sakura then goes to Nanao, placing the white rose in his breast pocket. The petals seemed to shine brighter than the purest snow against the deep blue of his clothes.

“The goal is to strike the rose on your opponent’s bosom. The victor will be able to meet the Rose Princess,” Sakura explained the guidelines we’ve heard tens of times.

“Your little sister has bloomed quite beautifully, Julio,” Nanao said as Sakura moved away from us, as to oversee our duel. “I’m a bit jealous. I wish I had a cute little sister.”

“I see you’ve matured a lot, as well,” I smiled.

“I’m not the weak little boy I used to be. I’m a noble knight for the Blue Rose,” he raised his sword. “I wield this sword with pride. For glory to the Rose Princess.”

I raised my own sword, “Glory to her.”

After that, our swords began to clash in a dance of two silver blades. The melodious sound of our swords clashing against one another echoed among the blooming roses surrounding us. Wrapping us in the scent of roses.

….

“Master Julio, congratulations on completing the Rose Trials.”

I still before the Council of Roses. Hooded figures that were colored with the different kingdoms colors. We stood in the church of St. Versailles, the stained glass painting of the first Rose King standing over us.

Watching… observing… judging us…

“Now that your trials have been completed, you are granted the right to approach the Rose Princess and you also have permission to engage yourself to her.”

Engagement. The word which some may see as fulfillment of desire, of power.

They say if you become engaged to the Rose Princess, you will have everything. The Rose Princess will do anything you say. She is the key to ruling the seven kingdoms.

Is that really what I want…?

My father wants me to be a ruler.

The kingdom expects me to become a king.

Sakura is admired by all, and believed to become the next Rose Princess.

A soldier, a protector, a knight… A valiant prince. Who everyone holds high expectations to become the next Rose King.

Do I want that? Do I truly…?

“Go now, Master Julio, to the top of the Versailles Tower, and meet the Princess.”

….

The Rose Princess was a symbol of absolution.

Those who are engaged to her will receive all their greatest desires.

Riches, fame, victory in all battles…

And most of all, her undying loyalty and love.

“Why?” I utter as I stare at the person in front of me, clad in a dress colored red like roses. My eyes were wide, unmoving from their figure and gaze. “Why is it you…?”

The Rose Princess… How can this be?

Truly… this is too cruel

“Surprised, right? I’m sorry, Julio… I wanted to tell you, but I knew no one could know.”

“But why? Why are you here, in that dress? Tell me…” I felt a lump form in my throat. I swallowed before invoking the person’s name.

Nanao.

The boy gave me a sad smile, holding my cheek.

“The truth is, Julio… The Rose Princess doesn’t exist.”

“Eh..?”

“She was a figmentation made by the Council of Roses. The true Rose Princess has been dead for 10 years. My father told me this before I started my trials because he believed I would be the Rose King.”

“Then, why are you dressed like that..?” I ask once again, utterly confused. “Why do you wear the Rose Princess’ dress?”

After that, Nanao’s smile lit up. “It’s simple… I want to be the Rose Princess.”

“But, you’re a boy.”

“That shouldn’t matter! I was never meant to be a knight or a king. I always knew, deep in my heart, I was born to be a princess.” He twirled in the gown of roses. “Don’t you think this suits me far better, Julio?”

I felt my lips curve in a smile. “You do look beautiful…”

“This is how the Council passes off the illusion. They use me as the Rose Princess so no one grows suspicious.”

Then, I frown. How cruel they are… In order to uphold this illusion, they have my friend pretend to be someone who is no longer living.

“Nanao… are you really happy like this?”

“Eh?”

“Even if you do those things for the Council, you aren’t truly the Rose Princess. You are just playing pretend; a scapegoat. You should be allowed to freely express who you are.”

“But, that’s not what the Rose Princess does,” Nanao looks at me, saddened. “The Rose Princess must obey the will of the one they are engaged to. And the will of the Council is--”

“That shouldn’t matter,” I spoke firmly, grabbing his shoulders.

“Julio..?”

“Not me nor the Council or anyone should decide what you want for you. You must make that decision yourself. If you truly want to be the Rose Princess, then you should be so and act the same way you always have. You should have your own wishes and desires.”

“I…” I saw a glimmer in his eyes, his copper irises reflecting the light from the stained glass window.

“These trials are chains that bind us down; the laws of the Council control our lives and our freedom. That is not the way. We should both be free.”

“Free…”

“Free to become what we are. Free to make our own decisions.”

“I want that…” Nanao smiled. “I want to be free!”

“Then, let’s leave this place. Let’s go somewhere that the Council cannot interfere with our freedom. To a place we’re free.”

….

“Where is the Rose Princess?!”

“Find them!”

“They are traitors! Rebels!”

“How dare they go against the Law of Versailles!”

“The Saint of Roses shall punish them!”

“Find the traitors and punish them!!!”

Rescue the Princess!

Kill the traitor knight!

“Glory to Versailles!!!”

….

“Sakura, I’m sorry. By the time you read this, I will no longer be in the White Rose Kingdom. Don’t come for me. I will be somewhere far, far away.

However, I want to leave you with this final request. You must become the Rose Princess and revolutionize the seven kingdoms. Liberate all the people from the laws of Versailles.

And never forget, your opinion matters. Be free to speak your mind.

You will always be my beloved, adorable little sister.

-Julio”

….

“We’ve become outlaws…”

“Yes,” I smirked.

“This may cause a war.”

I shook my head as we rode across the barren horizon of Nowhere.

“I trust Sakura will change everything…”

Nanao embraced my waist. “At least we’ll be free. We’ll both be somewhere the conflict cannot reach…”

The outside walls of the garden know nothing of the truth. It is a bird cage covered by a veil of glamour. They may search every kingdom but never find us.

Because we have gone beyond the wall of Versailles. We are somewhere they cannot reach.

We are free from the trials. We are free from the council. We are free from the trials.

We are free of it all. To choose our destiny. And…

“Julio… thank you for freeing me,” Nanao smiled as we leaned in for a kiss.

We are free to love.
