hello! I'm not a fan of AKB48 yet since I only like their song "Beginner" and I am more into k-pop and they are the only j-pop group that I know. errr.. since I really really really like their song Beginner, I decided to get to know them more.. lol

I would just like to ask something.. they are divided into 3 groups, right? A, K, & B? how many members are there in each group? and why do I see "Team RS" in the girls thread? and by the way, does AKB48 have a fanclub name?

sorry for the questions.. I just don't know who to ask since all of my friends are into k-pop and they make fun of me every time I would spazz on twitter about AKB48.. they thought I was only joking when I say I'm memorizing all the members of AKB48.. haha! but I'm serious.. ~__~ smh..

so anyway.. I hope you guys could answer my question.. ^__^ thank you very much. *bow*

ALL OF YOU! BOW DOWN TO MARIKO-SAMA!

16 girls per team. 16 x 3 = 48.
Team RS is the Kenkyuusei/Research Student team.  Made up of the girls who are training to become members of Teams A, K or B.  Often they sub in for absent members during the performances at the theater.

Hi Stardust~
mixedmedia's explanation is spot on. That's the member number Aki-P planned when creating AKB48, and its basically been kept like that.

A recent episode of "AKB to XX!" (episode 06 2010-12-23) also did a total count of all AKB team members including sister groups like SKE48, SDN48, etc... with names under their photos:
Including Research Students, AKB48 had 73 members.
While the total (including all sister groups) was 192 members.

For the fanclub, this should be the official one:

It's in Japanese, but it's confirming/denying a certain article which said the members who slacked were going to be demoted. Some names included Uchida Mayumi, Masuda Yuka, Matsubara Natsumi and Ishida Haruka. The article states that it's not so much 'demotion' (as the one leading to graduation), but more like the sense of a Supersub, and how it's more like tightening the ship, than anything.

Although to be honest it sure sounds like just another way to call them Kenkyuusei. :lol:

Interesting. I wonder if it means that a new trainee would be first promoted to the "RS+" group, and only then to a proper team; or if it promotions stay the same and "RS+" turns out be a class you can only be demoted to if you don't meet some expectations. Also, whether you can be further relegated from "RS+" to RS.

It's still all rumors & speculation as the rumors persisted from late 2010.

There's fear that some members may graduate (some we probably know since they don't appear much on the AKB shows but appears on other TV shows or modeling jobs outside the group)!

There's about 56 members so it needs to be trimmed down to 48.
It's unfortunate that some members names were mentioned but at least they're given advance notice to improve themselves but that won't guarantee they will remain.

The Yokohama event is coming up so maybe management will break the bad news there. Who knows?!

This isn't really related, but I was reading about this on neojaponisme:

http://neojaponisme.com/2010/06/29/the-jimusho-system-part-two/

If anyone wants to get a clearer view of how things work in 'the system'. It also explains some stuff that you see happening in the AKB48 world.

Read those very interesting articles quite some time ago when it was used as proof for the infamous "AKB = Korean Spies" debacle... happy days...

Anyway, it does seem like Akimoto is trying to built himself a female Johnny Jimusho but instead of SMAP, News, KATTUN we have AKB, SKE, SDN & NMB48. But looking at the longevity of both sets of idols, Akimoto might have burn through Japan's entire cute female stock by 2020.

AKB48 forms “Team Pichipichi NHK” to promote new shows

Posted on March 7, 2011 by tokyograph

9 popular members of idol group AKB48 are forming a limited-time unit to promote NHK’s new television shows that are starting this spring. The unit has been dubbed “Team Pichipichi NHK” (“pichipichi” means “lively”) and consists of Oshima Yuko, Maeda Atsuko, Shinoda Mariko, Itano Tomomi, Watanabe Mayu, Takahashi Minami, Kashiwagi Yuki, Sashihara Rino, and Yokoyama Yui.

NHK is launching 19 shows this spring, with the first ones starting on March 28. The 19 shows have been split up into 9 genres, and each of the Team Pichipichi members will be in charge of one of the genres. The genres are:

    * Sports (Oshima)
    * Creative (Maeda)
    * Common knowledge (Shinoda)
    * Entertainment (Itano)
    * Anime (Watanabe)
    * History (Takahashi)
    * Work (Kashiwagi)
    * Radio (Sashihara)
    * Health (Yokoyama)

The promotional unit will be active between the end of March and the middle of April. They will appear in mini-programs on NHK, on posters, and on a new website called “HaruNavi” that will be used to promote the shows.

Togasaki entry.

Quote from: Togasaki
Today we closed the theatre because of the Pacific Ocean Earthquake that has hit the Tohoku region, but at the moment we are not able to safely examine and repair the theatre.
As you, the fans, know well, AKB48 Theatre has a lot of hanging spotlights, moving lights, hydraulics.
In order to perform a check of their operativity and security, how many days will it take? When will we be able to call some expert in order to perform a check in the current situation? We have no way of predicting this.
Until we are able to offer to the fans the chance of watching theatre show in a safe environment, we will temporarily close the theatre.
Since aftershocks are continuing I have no way of saying anything, but as soon as I know the details I will announce them to you.

Moreover, to everyone who was worried about the members' safety:
I have just managed to get in touch with all members of AKB48 and SDN48.

Lastly, I am praying for the safety of all the people who live in the zones that were deeply affected by this earthquake.
In Tokyo public transportation has collapsed, and I think many people are feeling uneasy.
I wish everyone can feel relieved as soon as possible.
I think everyone is the same in feeling uneasy.
During these times, let's group strongly together and support each other!

All AKB and SDN members are ok!
