I loved the show so much that I didn’t want to have anything to do with it unless it was going to be me. I didn’t want to have the disappointment and go through all the palaver of jumping through hoops for something that I would never get. Because I knew it was an American pilot, and I knew they would go for somebody who was well-known - which Paul was, and he was fantastic. So I didn’t go along for the audition. I said to my agent ‘Thank you very much, but I don’t want to go along.’”Upon learning this fact, Skinner quipped “Think of the amount of Big Finish you would’ve done by now!”It’s unlikely that an eighth Doctor played by Peter Capaldi would have reversed the fortunes of the doomed pilot - Paul McGann’s portrayal of the role is considered to be one of the film’s few saving graces - but it’s fascinating to think that somewhere out there in a parallel universe there’s an episode of Doctor Who in which Peter Capaldi’s Doctor snogs Daphne Ashbrook against a tree and rides a motorcycle through San Francisco. And who knows - perhaps in that same universe Paul McGann is busy launching the DVD for his acclaimed first series as the twelfth Doctor...
