Title: A Fukuoka Yankii in Fujiwara's Court: Chapter 3 on 12/8 (omatase!)
Post by: rokun on September 03, 2010, 07:01:02 AM
Okay, first, yes I am crazy  Second, I'm not sure exactly how this is going to go, but I have pretty set plans for the storyline of this fic... I guess I had to write another epic... :ph43r: Enjoy. XD

A Fukuoka Yankii in Fujiwara’s Court

Prologue

“I’m gonna kick your ass for that, Yoshi,” Reina told the boy across from her in a harsh voice as she balled up her hand in a fist at her chest.

“Hey, I’m just sayin’ it how it is, yo,” the boy called Yoshi replied, trying to look unconcerned but watching the small girl’s fist carefully. “Haru saw you two at the corner crepe shop. He said he bought you a crepe, and you kept looking at each other as you ate it.”

“Of course we looked at each other!” Reina fired back. “What else do people do when they eat together?”

Yoshi chuckled a little along with his friends before settling his eyes on his girlfriend Yukiko, and pulled her close to his side before grinning back at Reina. “That’s just what we’re tryin’ to say, yo,” he said in his slightly slurred voice addled by the weed they’d been smoking not long ago. “You two were out together. Don’t tell me there isn’t something going on. Our little Reina is growing up so quickly. I wonder if you still got what it takes to be tough enough to be a head of the gang. I always knew one of these days you’d turn into just another girl like Yukiko here.”

“Hey…!” Yukiko protested after a moment. She surely didn’t appear like a helpless girl with her long character-printed gang jacket and dark eye-liner, which only accentuated her bleached-blonde gyaru-style hair. However, Reina knew better. She shared her glare of disdain with the girl now, comfortable in her shorter and less gaudy black leather jacket, though it still did feature a modest amount of gang characters.

“You’re askin’ for it, Yoshi,” she replied, knowing her position was weak against her united opposition. She was as feisty a fighter as any of them, having even had independent martial arts training, but her small form could still be overwhelmed by numbers. And she knew just what was going on here. It was a beat down.

“Hey,” Yoshi spat, looking back at one of his companions. “Our leaders have to stay independent, don’t they?” It wasn’t a question; he knew the answer perfectly well, but it was a test of one of the newer recruits as well as a display to further intimidate Reina.

The other boy nodded. “Ain’t right to get involved with each other,” he said, his eyes focused on Reina the whole time as he flexed his knuckles along with the others. “We need the diff’rence of opinion in order to have the most objective direction for the org’nization. If people fraternize they begin to think too similar, and we have a problem at the top.” He grinned, but Yoshi took up the rest from him.

“And in that case, it’s the girl that gets demoted.” Yoshi’s smile widened, showing missing teeth.

“I tell ya, I’m not fraternizing!” Reina yelled at them, but adopted a more defensive stance since she knew that there was no hope now. They’d believe what they wanted to believe, and looked for any excuse for a beat down in any case. Reina had done the same herself many times. It had just been a long time since she was on the receiving end.

“Re~ina and Ta~rou, sittin’ in a tree ♪,” Yukiko began to chime. “K – I – S – S – I…” She didn’t get to finish though, as Reina raced toward her like a flash and broke her knuckles on the girl’s jaw.

“Hey, that’s my girl!!!” Yoshi yelled, and the brawl quickly became all-out.

Reina moaned again into the cushion on her couch. Most of her body felt on fire, but she normally wouldn’t have showed such weakness if she wasn’t safe and sound in her own house.

“You really should be more careful,” a motherly voice sounded soothingly from behind her, and she felt someone raise her shirt to lay a warm moist towel on her bruised lower back. “I don’t know why you care so much about that gang anyway.”

“Mmmph…” Reina replied in half-groan and half-grunt, neither in a particularly girly fashion.

She heard a sigh, and felt the couch give as someone sat by her feet. “I’m not going to be here to take care of you all the time, you know.”

Finally Reina made herself sit up, pulling the towel from her back to lay against her forehead. She glanced at the girl peering calmly as she sat beside her. “I’m glad you’re my private best friend, Eririn,” she murmured to the girl. “I’d never be able to live down the shame of you to the rest of them.”

Eri smiled and looked away, patting Reina’s leg. “I’m just telling you, one of these times you’re gonna wake up and I won’t be around to take care of you. You need someone to take care of all those bruises and cuts you earn yourself. By the way, what was it this time? It seemed a bit worse than usual. You stumble drunk into the headquarters of the Tamagochi-gumi or something?”

Reina slapped lightly at the girl’s arm. “You know I don’t get drunk,” she said. “And no. It wasn’t that.” Seeing Eri still staring curiously at her, she sighed and continued, “It was just that dick Yoshi, thinks he can knock me out of my place if he makes me look bad.”

Eri gasped. “Your own gang!? But it’s been… years since…” She peered closer at Reina. “Actually, you haven’t had to take punishment since you officially joined Fujimoto-gumi years ago, have you? Since before Miki-chan retired…”

Reina grunted again.

“…So what happened?”

“…”

“I’m not going anywhere, you know.”

Reina mumbled something inaudible.

“What was that?”

“Someone saw me with Tarou,” she said loud enough to hear this time.

Realization dawned on Eri’s face. “Ah, I see…” Then she stood up. Turning to Reina to give her one of her crooked smiles, she said once more, “I really think you should take this chance to rid yourself of some of that responsibility. In this instance you wouldn’t even lose face.” She turned away again and took a step before concluding quietly over her shoulder, “And Tarou is a very nice boy.”

Then she left the room.

Grumbling, Reina laid back down on the couch, this time facing up so she could keep the towel at her forehead. “Tarou is a very nice boy~ ♪” she mocked. “He’s gonna get an earful the next time I get my hands on him…” Then she blushed. She really didn’t like him. Boys would only hold her back now, and she wanted to keep the control of the gang she’d spent so long attaining. She wanted the responsibility.

“Boys…” Reina mumbled as the precursors of dreams began drawing themselves on the canvas of her closed eyelids. “Girls are really the best…”

And she fell soundly asleep.

She must have been awoken by rolling over, and as her consciousness began igniting her senses, she gave a long yawn as she stretched out fully. The air tasted extraordinarily fresh, and she smiled. Eri must have sprayed some sanitizer around the room.

As her mind began working faster though, she felt that something seemed out of place. She’d just rolled over, and fully stretched. The couch wasn’t big enough for that… Shrugging it off as that she must have fallen to the floor without realizing it, she grabbed at some of the grass around her and as she was just about to open her eyes…

…Grass?

Sitting up, she rubbed her eyes since they must have been deceiving her. Maybe her right eye still wasn’t fully healed from whatever was hurting it the other day. She blinked, then looked around again.

She sat in grass that swayed in the breeze blowing up and over the side of the hill whose peak was just off to her right. In fact, the sound of the wind and breeze was about all she could hear along with the quiet activity of the untamed nature surrounding her.

“Um…” Reina said, blinking as she tried to take in all of her surroundings.

She got up, feeling a little woozy. Her bruises were still there, but they felt much better than before she had fallen asleep. Maybe she was still asleep?

“I must be dreaming…” she mumbled, and pinched herself as she began walking in her t-shirt and jeans unsteadily to the top of the hill. Feeling a chill in the air, she wished for her jacket. She didn’t even feel complete without it on. However, if this was a dream she could control, it didn’t magically appear.

“Damn Yoshi…” she complained. “Somehow this is all his fault. I know it is. Eri!” she yelled to each side of the hill, but her voice was carried away in the wind. “Eri this isn’t funny! Where the hell are you!?” Then she reached the top of the hill and stumbled to a halt, staring.

A dirt path crossed the bottom of the other side of the hill, with another, wider… road…? branching out from it straight away from her. Far down it she could see activity as if some people were walking along it, and what appeared to be a village of small old-style buildings before… She rubbed her eyes again. Beyond was a large castle, flags she couldn’t make out waving from the towers framing the gate.

“This is sure a hell of a dream…” she said, staring, and pinched her arm again.

Suddenly though she heard shouts from down and off to her right, and activity, and she froze as the air rippled beside her ear as if something had whizzed just past it.

“Stop!” came a louder, and very angry-sounding shout. Wondering if her heart was going to beat again, she drew her eyes slowly toward the activity to see a bunch of people in armor hurrying off their horses and bowing to one who had fancier armor than the rest as well as a horned helmet, and who was also striding purposefully and with great authority directly toward her. Two others flanked her, in better looking armor than the ones that stayed behind, but still without helmets. She noticed a few of the ones who stayed behind carried bows, and gulped while trying not to think of what had just flown by her ear.

“You must not do this!” she heard the shorter one urge the leader as they came within hearing range. “Let me identify the stranger!”

“It appears to be a girl,” the other one trailing added. As they closed in, Reina realized that two of them looked like very short men, with the other perhaps of average size. When she could recognize facial features, Reina’s breath caught. The leader had to be perhaps the handsomest man Reina had ever seen.

Finally, still several paces away, the leader and apparently eldest came to a stop. The other two fell in behind her as if they were used to this type of stop and go. Reina eyed the swords she now saw they carried at their sides and on their backs. Knowing a bit of martial arts herself, she thought they looked like they could use them. And very well.

“Er… hello?” she greeted, donning what she hoped wasn’t too crooked a smile.

She almost cried out when the point of a sword was suddenly at her throat, somehow drawn by the beautiful, if short, man without her even noticing the action.

“Who art thou?” the man asked, and Reina blinked, still very conscious of the sword point pressing lightly against her throat.

“Uh… what?” she asked.

She lost another breath when her chin raised as the point pressed marginally harder. “Explain thyself or die,” the man said. Reina definitely understood this time. “Thou comest from where?”

“Ano…” Reina murmured, amazed she could produce any sound at all. “Ano… Fukuoka…”

The man’s brow furrowed, but the sword’s pressure lessened slightly. He looked to the shorter of his companions, who stared stonily back, before turning once again to Reina. “Kyushu?”

“Yes!” Reina replied frantically, grateful to finally hear something she recognized in this beyond strange place. “Fukuoka, on Kyushu. Wait…” she said, as the thought finally hit her through the shock of the moment. “Are you saying this… isn’t Kyushu?”

The man stared fiercely back at her for a moment before shaking his head slightly. Reina couldn’t see much more than a shadow of his eyes below the rim of the helmet, but from what she could see, their gaze shined more intensely than she’d ever imagined possible.

Then, allowing her to finally draw a breath for the first time in what seemed like ages, he withdrew the sword and slid it skillfully back into its scabbard at his waist. As he reached up to take off his helmet, he said in the same clear voice, “Strange clothing thou wearest.”

Reina cocked her head, trying to decipher the words. It was Japanese, but surely the oddest dialect she’d ever heard… It seemed to fit the costumes and setting though, like it was straight out of a period drama.

Then the realization hit her once again that the man only withdrew his sword because she was obviously no threat. Having been in many dangerous situations before herself, she decided to be wary. Well, a bit at least.

“I could tell you the same thing.”

Taking the helmet off, he looked at another of his companions, who shrugged with only a slight shoulder movement. When he turned back Reina almost gasped again, but this time not from a sword. The height, the body shape, the voice, the too-handsome face – it finally completely clicked to her as she saw the shoulder-length hair held back just at the top with a comb. It was perhaps the best imitation she’d ever seen, but…

“You’re a woman!”

She only got a glimpse of the woman’s eyes widening before a ring of steel was followed quickly by two more sword points to her throat as the two companions lunged to either side of this mysterious person who must be their master. Too much in shock to hardly even regard the swords, she glanced to them as well. “You’re all girls!”

“She’s a spy,” the short one said sharply.

“If she knows our identities, she cannot be allowed to live,” the taller added.

“No!” the woman in charge said forcefully, and gestured to each of them. They withdrew their swords and returned to their spots, if a bit unsettled and with a very cautious focus on Reina.

“Ya know,” Reina said, automatically trying to defuse the tension with a winning smile. “Those swords are a hell of a way to greet someone. Would you like your boys back there to point theirs at me too? That is, if they aren’t girls too. What are you? Some kind of traveling Takarazuka-style period acting troupe?”

The three women just stared at her for a moment, the leader calculatingly and the other two cautiously, though with an air of calmly waiting for their next orders.

“You speak very strangely,” the eldest said, uneasily using language at least a bit more similar to Reina’s own. “But I do not believe you are a threat. You say you come from Kyushu. Is this some… new Chinese fashion?”

Reina barked a short laugh at that, causing the two flankers to widen their eyes, scandalized. “Of course not,” she replied. “It’s just Western.”

“Western?” the leader asked, puzzled. “From Kyushu itself? Or Korea?”

This time Reina didn’t know what to say, so she decided to change the subject. “So do you have a name?”

“You speak with his…” the short guard began in a voice wearing very thin of patience, but she glanced at the leader before continuing, “…her lordship, Takahashi no Aitarou, Commander of the Five Armies and Vanquisher of the Emishi. You would do well to learn some respect, knave.”

Reina glanced at the girl who spoke. “And you two lackeys?” She almost grinned as the anger flared up stronger in the girl’s face. Despite all her armor and toys, she couldn’t have been older than Reina herself.

“My Lord, let me cut out her tongue,” the other hissed. “Maybe then she’d learn some manners.”

However, Reina returned her eyes purposely back to this “Aitarou”’s, finding the woman still staring calmly and powerfully back. It might be a game with the other two, but with this woman… Had her heart really beat so much faster when she’d thought she was a guy?

“They are my commanders,” she replied, the two to each side looking disgruntled. “Sugawara no Shimizu no Saki,” she said gesturing to the shorter one, who stood still as a stone, “And Minamoto no Yajima no Maimi.” Reina almost smiled again. The two did not seem pleased at all to be called by what must be their feminine names.

“And I am Tanaka Reina,” Reina replied, bowing with a smirk. “Your highness…”

“Scoundrel!” Shimizu hissed. Somehow she decided the second name given would be most appropriate to think of them as.

Takahashi only seemed to take her different way of saying her name into careful consideration along with everything else she’d so far noticed about her.

Reina’s smile faded as she rose back up. “Now… can someone please tell me what’s going on here…?”

“We are bound for yon castle,” Takahashi said, seeming bemused and unconcerned with giving her more information. “It belongs to Shimizu, and will resupply us before we continue on to Heian-kyo for an audience with His Highness.”

Reina blinked. Heian-kyo? Wasn't that what Kyoto used to be called back when it was the capital of Japan? Over a thousand years ago…

“You’re serious, aren’t you?” Reina asked, her apprehension rising. Somehow, she was beginning to think this was very much not a dream.

“Come,” Takahashi said. “I would like you to join us. I wish to… talk with you for a longer time.” And without a second thought, she turned and headed back down to the soldiers waiting below.

Before Reina could even take a step she found herself half-carried and half-dragged by Shimizu and Yajima, who each grabbed one of her arms, and very tightly. “Hey there…” she protested. “That hurts!”

“You are very lucky,” Yajima growled into her ear.

“Do you want to hurt?” Shimizu asked cruelly into her other one. “If you don’t learn to behave more respectfully to your masters, I can show you ways of being hurt you will have never before dreamed. And if you let slip to anyone, anyone, that we are anything but young men and the rightful Lords of our fiefs, that offer is a promise.”

Reina felt like a sack of onions as she let herself be dragged along. If this wasn’t a dream, then either somebody was playing a huge practical joke on her, or… or… A thousand years ago…? Exactly how hard did I get hit…?

Her two escorts didn’t even notice when she fainted clean away.

A Connecticut Yankee in King Arhur's Court XD

Now, I can either be an asshole about this or let you go

Hmm, for now I think it will be an interesting story, are you going to take on a samurai theme?  If you are, I think I know where it might be going

You are crazy but interesting...  :twothumbs

The title of this fic is what drew me in. I'm happy this is set in what seems to be an ancient time period. It interests me more than a story about gangs would. So will Reina end up there everytime she goes to sleep now or has she really crossed a different time period? I guess I'll get my answer in the next chapter since she fainted at the end of this one.

You brought in the Captain and Maimi.  I expected Ai to show up with some MM members as her guards but this made me happier.  :D

Why would Ai take off her helmet when she's supposed to be masquerading as a guy? She didn't seem to expect Reina to realize she was a girl though. So she's used to people thinking she's a guy even when she's not wearing her helmet?

Wait, I forgot this... Eri  I always think of her as a ditsy girl though rather than motherly.  XD

^ Shhhh, nobody has to remember that story. XD I thought it sounded familiar, but I couldn't put my finger on it.

Interesting start so far, looking forward to the rest.

I started skimming the first paragraph... Got interested while reading the second paragraph, so went back and read the first one fully.
I read through the whole prologue and though this was really interesting and that I'm looking forward to more. I go back to the H!P fanfics page and only after reading the whole thing noticed who the author was... XD

Looking forward to another epic story from you rokun!  Though... I'm really hoping for an update for The Sword and the Dove soon. XD

Oh good god, you made Saki a Sugawara (the Sugawara?!), and Maimi just had to be a Minamoto, didn't she?

Jidai-geki ftw?

Sorry about the lack of coherency, I just came back from a full day's work. XD

I look forward to more, so no disappearing on us! *grabs and clings on to*

EDIT: Great, you made me sprain my brain by leading me to Japanese wiki and researching the time period orz. I hate you. :P

Omg Rokun xD

Historical/feudal Asia is my favorite setting and you just had to go ahead and pull through with this xDDDD

Way to drag me back to the fanfic section here, roffle xD!

Our favorite foul-mouthed yankii suddenly sent back in time~! A lot of interesting things should happen, I believe <3

We better see Maimi kicking ass with swords here xD

But more than that, Reina going yankii style with ancient weaponry should be fantastic <3

Hope to see more of this soooooon! <3

From the title I knew Reina had to be in it....but to send her back in time with Ai-chan as a handsome 'lord' in a semi High-King reunion wasn't quite what I had expected  Excited though, as I smell a RenAi vibe. Though I do wonder exactly what kind of a role Eri has to play here.
Looking forward to the next chapter already :twothumbs

rokun....

First off, thanks for holding off another update(?) in wait for my comment! I was planning to get all my reading and commenting done yesterday, but only managed so much before it was 3 in the morning and I was just trying to settle in bed without coughing to death. >.<

So this will be my first rokun fic, and I'm glad I get to follow this one from the beginning. Despite the fact that I'm not all that much of a Reina-in-real-life fan.  :sweatdrop: I like the awesome yankii character she is usually portrayed as in fics though, so it's no big deal.  :twothumbs
And really, as always, it's all going to boil down to the reading.

Reina in full yankii mode

Quote
“Of course we looked at each other!” Reina fired back. “What else do people do when they eat together?”

Don't they... just eat?
Or maybe that's just me and my eternal devotion to food.

So Reina was vying for position as leader of that gang then? I say Reina is too cool to be heading a bunch of batty crackheads, she's worthy of being a one-woman gang

:k-great: She's not afraid to send her knuckles flying at another girl (in front of her boyfriend...) either... you gotta love yourself some yankii  XD

Quote
“You really should be more careful,” a motherly voice sounded soothingly from behind her, and she felt someone raise her shirt to lay a warm moist towel on her bruised lower back. “I don’t know why you care so much about that gang anyway.”

Motherly? My first instinctive thought = GAKI-SAN!

But then I wondered if you'd really be writing about Gaki-san after all our talk in the fanfics discussion thread?

Turns out to be...

 :panic:

*gasps* Eririn!
Completely unexpected, and a little hard to imagine at that... but hey, it might work if you write it well enough for readers to suspend belief  :thumbsup
Still >.< I find 'motherly' friend role to be much better suited to Gaki-san. Why didn't you simply typecast the bean, rokun?  Are you saving her for another role our turtle can't fill?

Quote
“Actually, you haven’t had to take punishment since you officially joined Fujimoto-gumi years ago, have you? Since before Miki-chan retired…”

Fujimoto-san  :w00t:
I hope she gets to feature more in this fic than in one passing line. I find that Miki in fanfics = pure entertainment.  :inlove:

 :OMG:

She's somehow woken up and discovered she's gone back in time??? Wow, if this is where it's headed, looks like we're all in for a big treat. I don't think I've come across a time travelling H!P story yet. This should be lots of fun... (judging from all the time-travel stuff I've seen ... JIN!)

Quote
As they closed in, Reina realized that two of them looked like very short men...

Errr.... I don't think so, Reina-chan...

Quote
perhaps the handsomest man Reina had ever seen...

If that's not a Takahashi, I'll be damned!  :w00t:

The contrast between their language style and Reina's rather casual deliverance of meaning...  Very well done  :twothumbs

Quote
Reina glanced at the girl who spoke. “And you two lackeys?”

...

“And I am Tanaka Reina,” Reina replied, bowing with a smirk. “Your highness…”

Oh my Reina  XD
You'd expect somebody who's just landed herself in an extremely foreign situation to keep a grasp on her more cautionary bearings... I mean, these 'girls' do have swords after all. Reina sure is a genuine yankii, isn't she?  :P
Either that, or she thinks she's still having some kind of dream!

Quote
Reina blinked. Heian-kyo? Wasn't that what Kyoto used to be called back when it was the capital of Japan? Over a thousand years ago…

She finally gets it?
Was she really participating in that conversation so offhandedly because she didn't suspect a thing?  :mon sweat:
Well I guess I can't really blame her... it's not everyday you wake up and find yourself at the mercy of Shakespearian-speaking beings  :nervous
But Reina could really exercise some caution...  :yep:

Quote
"And if you let slip to anyone, anyone, that we are anything but young men and the rightful Lords of our fiefs, that offer is a promise.”

Oooooo.... what are these girls really up to?  :glasses:
Looking forward to finding out!

Saki and Maimi? I know faces very well, but I'm not all too clear about their personalities. Perhaps you can shed some light on that over the course of the story. ^___^

So far, so good. Definitely an intriguing premise and I would follow anyway simply because this is a rokun-written fic, and I admire all the seniors here very much.

But it's got my attention.

I want to see how much more trouble Reina can land herself in  :nervous It's going to be fun watching how our yankii is going to survive in this alien world. She's standing out like a sore thumb right now - I bet it's going to be plenty adventure for her in the coming chapters to find out what's going on!

Who else is going to be involved? Perhaps there's Eri here too! A past life of hers or something
Would you throw in a few OGs too?  :w00t:

Great first chapter, great story orientation, great writing, great job!

Thanks for sharing, rokun
Please update soon. I'm looking forward to MORE.

I know I said I was going to reply to comments after Bee edited... but then I got into gaming over the long weekend. Hopefully start up some writing again the next few days at work though!

First of all... wow, thanks everyone so much for the comments! :D I haven't gotten so many since... since... well i don't know when. It's nice to feel loved.

It was interesting reading through everyone's responses. Had quite a mix of various things. My first impression had to do with impressions on the story I'm taking this from (as kuro said, A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court), and the other, mostly due to the last two posts, was Eri. We've had all too much of her crazy crackness in fics I notice. :P There's definitely more to her than you saw in this chapter... but too bad, you're not gonna actually see her much . As for who else you will see... well... you will just have to wait and see. :) It's not a huge cast though like many of my other fics. In fact, as it is now, there are plans for 8 of the girls to appear (not including Eri, and plus non-H!P historical characters). There is also a rule for who will appear in this fic that you might eventually figure out. ;) Anyway, onto personalized replies!!

kuro: What are you talking about? I intended it to be pretty clearly inspired by A Connecticut Yankee. That's part of the pun!In fact, I'm surprised more people don't know of it. Come on people! Especially if you're American, it's one of the classics by perhaps our greatest American author (Mark Twain)! XD That said, I'm not necessarily going to be following that plotline all that closely except for in a very general way (the whole Reina going back in time to court thing). This actually draws from many inspirations, mostly Japan-related history and historical works. There will be "samurai", such as what Ai, Saki and Maimi exemplify, but that system wasn't all that big a deal yet at this point in the history (I'll see if you can pinpoint when exactly it is as the story goes on and more characters are introduced... If not, then hopefully it may be a bit of a learning experience :)).

Anyway, back to Twain's work, his book was a heavy satire on America of his day. Something else this story will follow is that satirical, somewhat tongue-in-cheek not-so-serious style. So yes, maybe things might be a bit off the wall. ;)

Tuna: Yes, this is definitely not a story about gangs . I have another story like that. ;) The beginning was only to briefly set Reina up as said Fukuoka Yankii ;). Ai is not used to people identifying her as a woman as her hairstyle is in the style of a Lord of the day as well. Reina just recognized her as such because, well, back then there weren't many women cross-dressing, but Reina is quite familiar with them today and knows what to look for.

oddball: I don't know that film  Maybe I should look it up for further inspiration. :)

rndy: That's all? Seriously? jk :P Well, if you don't know Twain's story, perhaps much of this will be new to you then, and I hope you enjoy it. :D

maize: Yay, I'm glad to see my writing can still drag people in even if they don't know my reputation! As for Sword... I'll update that too... some day... :ph43r:

kawaii: Hmm *looks again* Yes, I suppose it is rather High-King-ish so far, ne? It was actually unintentional. ^^; You'll see more girls pop up in the future... (and some not, as I mentioned before)

fallenxangel: No Yuukarin in this story. At least, not planned as of now. Though it's possible that could change...

Essy : I hate you too . And no, Saki is not the Sugawara. (those who are lost: you'll learn what she is talking about before long )

Yuuchan: O_O You posted!! *clings to make you stay* It must have really drawn your attention to pull you out of your semi-permanent lurk-dom. You should come around and say hi so the new people can get to know their modly mod! XD Maimi will definitely go kick-ass with swords here (Ran was one of the inspirations to this ), and as for Reina... well we'll see, but I'm sure you already noticed something. I hope you enjoy the history that'll be in here! :D It'll be set in what I think is a different time from what we see a lot of things set... but as I've done the research, it seems like many interesting things still will happen. And that's beyond the stuff I'll just be creating myself. ;)

Aisacchan: Another High-King fan. Yes, I think Aichan would be very handsome as a feudal Lord or general.

Aussie: ReinAi? Where? As for Eri... well... like I said before don't hold your horses. There's still much to come though! Including maybe a surprise or two from me.

Bee: Yay! Epic comment! :D  I'm sorry you're not a big Reina fan. She tends to play a big role in most of my fics. I'm beginning to understand why you haven't read them yet. And that's okay. :) Miki - again probably someone you shouldn't get your hopes up about. But yes, Reina is a genuine yankii. Plus, she feels pretty confident about herself anyway... besides the fact that she still mostly didn't believe what was happening around her was fully real lol. We'll see if she's right or not from next chapter
Quote
Oooooo.... what are these girls really up to?  :glasses:
That really is the quote of the time. There are many plans... and I wonder how Reina will fit into them? Or will she just indeed get herself into trouble?

Sukoshi: O_O That's pretty epic yourself!!! :D  I love your theories on what happened to Reina. Hamtarou. XD As for evil... hmm... No evil H!P girls here. :P They're all virginal angels!! And one more about Eri... Reina knows well what she has in her. That doesn't mean she doesn't leave her out of her yankii teasings though... ;)

^ I am trying to pinpoint the time period and if you manage to get something weird, I can tease you about it, I read the book in 7th or 8th grade so it might be quite a refresher reading this fic.  I know the period but is it early or later part of the period?

Hello! :D I wanted to get this out soon since there seemed so much interest in the story. In order for me to update more quickly, I think I may again try to keep the chapters a bit shorter than I have at times. XD Yet... despite the brevity... somehow this fic still seems to take forever to write. :banghead: You might see why as you read along... I'm trying to keep it simple and enjoyable to read, as well as rich in content. :)

Anyway, this chapter features two new characters, but don't worry, there is more to come. :)

Chapter 1: Castle Shimizu, Waiting Room

“Are these clothes not just the oddest things you have ever seen?”

“Somehow I actually rather like them.”

“I cannot believe you would say that! If Shimizu-sama ever caught you in something like that… Why, you would be forced to run off and become a Buddhist nun!”

“I would not count on that. The way these… leggings, if they are really to be worn as a top layer, seem to accentuate the legs, Shimizu-sama may not mind at all…”

“Shimizu-sama? …Legs?” Reina moaned, opening her eyes to take in a dimly lit chamber. Warm colors seemed to surround her on rosewood tapestried walls.

“Oh, do lay off Momo-chan. Not everyone could be as puri-puri in pink as you are.”

“But that is what I am! A puri-puri princess!”

Reina heard a sigh. “I will not get into another lineage debate with you, Momo-chan. I know very well how the Tsugunaga line is a traceable offshoot of the Genji.”

“And who is your family descended from again?” this ‘Momo-chan’ asked slyly.

“Oh look! She is awake!”

Reina had rolled her head slightly to try to identify where the voices had been coming from, and had seen two young girls. One, the taller if not by much and with amazingly long hair that hung free almost to her waist yet appeared carefully brushed out, seemed to be fussing over her jeans and t-shirt. The other, in a kosode and magenta hakama as elegant as perhaps a kosode and hakama combination could be, was staring sharply at her companion.

The taller one laid her clothes aside after noticing she was awake and drifted over to her bed. Reina was almost mesmerized by the girl’s just as elaborate burgundy hakama flowing easily around her legs, making it appear as if she really were drifting through the water toward her, or at least a gentle breeze. She’d never seen someone walk quite so… naturally in such clothes.

Suddenly she had two girls peering down at her as if she were some strange animal.

“Hey!” she cried, and sat up so quickly it surprised them and made them pull back slightly. “I don’t like people just… hovering over me like that!” Then she looked down to see the sheet fallen to her legs, leaving her thighs up to her head… completely bare.

Flushing furiously, she tugged the sheet once again tightly up against her. “And where are my damn clothes!?”

“Did you understand half of what she said?” the taller one asked, looking to her companion.

“Not a clue,” Momo-chan replied. “How peculiar…”

“Stop talking about me like I’m not here! And bring me my clothes!!” But the two girls just stared placidly back at her.

Then with a harrumph, Reina slid off the bed and paced carefully over to where they had left her clothes, very conscious of their stares ever-present on her back. Glancing back as she picked them up, she turned her head to look at them and sighed before noticing the large folding screen across the room.

She was about to run off to it before one of the girls spoke up. “We have been told to provide you with whatever accoutrements you may desire,” the taller one said. “You do not have to keep wearing such… lewd peasant clothing.”

“You do not suppose she is a Lady in disguise?” Momo-chan said in a low voice toward her friend’s ear, never taking her eyes off Reina. “The way Takahashi-sama seemed to speak of her…”

“I am no Lady!” Reina retorted.

“Surely even a Lady could not sink so far…” the haughty girl followed up in an even softer, sour voice.

“That’s it,” Reina barked, throwing her clothes down. “I don’t care if I’m naked, I’mma kick your puny ass…”

As she lunged toward the girl though, the door swung open to admit an even younger girl. Her eyes were almost as big as saucers as she took in Reina, who stopped and held the sheet tighter to herself. The red in her face was her anger at the snooty princess girl. Yeah, that was it.

“Takahashi-sama and Shimizu-sama have requested your presence in the audience chamber,” the girl piped, again still staring at Reina. Reina was beginning to get tired of all this staring.

“Of course,” the taller girl replied smoothly. “We will come presently.”

“They request the audience with… all three of you,” the girl continued, finally looking at the other two in response to the offer. “Takahashi-sama also insisted I request you outfit the stranger with proper court casual attire. ‘Three layers should do,’ were the Lord’s words.”

Momo-chan sighed. “Thank you, girl. In the future though, please remember to be more specific with your initial message. We do not want to see your pretty long hair cut off now, do we?” The girl blushed and lowered her eyes, reaching reflexively toward her hair before she caught herself.

“Oh, her hair you think is pretty…” the other grumbled. For some reason Reina was beginning to like that one at least.

“Excuse me,” Reina said, having almost forgotten that she was still standing in a sheet. “There is nothing wrong with the casual attire I already have. And my name is Tanaka Reina!”

“Oh, but we have been rude,” the taller girl said, leaning down in a deep, precise bow. Reina studied her closely, but didn’t imagine she could replicate the action if she tried. After meeting her eyes again, the girl continued, “I am Natsuyaki no Miyabi, and this is Tsugunaga no Momoko.”

Reina almost snorted a laugh at the ancient-sounding names given so seriously, but instead she nodded in return after Momo-chan bowed as well. The girls noticed right away that she didn’t bow lower, and their eyes tightened slightly.

“Nice to meetcha,” she said with a grin. “So are you the uh… servants in this place? They were going to a castle, weren’t they? Is this it?”

The girls’ eyes widened at that, and they looked at each other, but it was the young messenger who let out a scandalized gasp. “Servants!” she cried, having apparently lost control. “Natsuyaki-san and Tsugunaga-san are Ladies of the Court, and not to mention Shimizu-sama’s chief consorts!”

“That will be enough, Risako-chan,” Momo-chan chirped sternly. “You run along to Mistress Yukiko and tell her to put your hair in pigtails and give you a small doll to carry around until you better learn to control your mind.”

Risako-chan, visibly chastened, bowed her head with a rosy blush. “Yes, of course my Lady. My Lady,” she added, bowing to Natsuyaki as well before darting a glance at Reina and hiking her hakama to run out the door and down the hall before they could say more.

Momo-chan sighed. “Girls these days. Give them the best, yet they still refuse to learn proper manners.”

“You are just too harsh on the children,” Natusyaki replied off-handedly.

“Children?” Reina asked. “She couldn’t have been more than a couple years younger than you…”

The two Ladies blinked at her as if they’d forgotten she was there. “Risako-chan is in training as a lady-in-waiting,” Natsuyaki replied. “Despite the honour her station will eventually bestow upon her family, she is for now regarded as but a child to all. Relative age is irrelevant.”

“Oh,” Reina said. “Did you guys go through that training as well?”

Instead of responding, Momo-chan snapped open a fan and began fluttering it at her face, which was round with rosebud painted lips below short hair tied in an odd hooked ponytail in the back. “Who does she think we are?” she asked Natsuyaki.

Natsuyaki though considered Reina thoughtfully, and commented, “Somehow I do not believe she knows our ways. Are you truly not a Lady in disguise?” she asked Reina. “From where do you hail?”

Reina blinked a moment as she tried to decipher the girl’s words. “Um… I’m… not from around here…” As things kept becoming odder and odder, she was just about to give up putting on her normal front. It was beginning to get tiring.

“That is the first thing yet to make sense to me about you,” Momo-chan commented primly. Reina really did not like the girl.

“But we must make haste to our audience with the Lords,” Natsuyaki said. “It will not do to keep them waiting.” Then she swayed over to a table where several kimonos seemed to be very carefully laid out.

“Why do you keep calling them that?” Reina asked idly, picking at the sheet she still held to just above her chest. “Lords. I mean, they’re women aren’t they?”

Momo-chan’s look was slowly turning into a glare, but Reina had decided to start ignoring the girl. “Not a one outside of the esteemed Family, ourselves, and some select of the other ladies knows the truth of that,” Natsuyaki replied as she deliberately went through the clothing. Reina could only imagine what exactly she was looking for. “I hear Takahashi-sama gave you orders, but I also ask that you keep your lips tight on that account. As to your other question, they are titled as Lords of the Land, and so shall be treated as such.”

Reina was still confused on that point, but she decided to ask one of these “Lords” herself later. There was something else the girl had said…

Her eyes widened.

“Wait. You two are Shimizu’s… consorts?”

“Shimizu-sama,” Momo-chan hissed, but Reina continued to ignore her.

“Yes,” Natsuyaki replied. “Do you not have a Lord yourself at whichever fief you hail from? But then if you are not truly a Lady…” she trailed off doubtfully.

Reina flushed. “I certainly do not have a Lord!” she angrily protested.

“Curiouser and curiouser,” Momo-chan replied ponderingly, though not losing the glare.

“But a consort,” Reina continued, wanting to finally understand something. “You don’t mean…”

“It is an honour for us to fulfill our Lord’s needs, whatever may be required, but primarily within the bedchamber,” Natusyaki replied naturally.

You may prefer the bedchamber,” Momo-chan said bitterly. “I prefer the delicacy of poetry and the other fine arts, not to mention beauty.”

“But there is delicacy to be found in all tasks, is there not? Besides, I tell you the Chinese arts will soon be out of fashion,” Natsuyaki advised amusedly. “Perhaps our mysterious visitor here heralds the new wave.”

“Buddha forbid…” Momo-chan breathed fervently, glancing down to Reina’s forgotten clothing.

“Besides, if you allowed Shimizu-sama to pillow you as well, you may find you also truly enjoy it.”

Reina groaned as the girl finally seemed to decide on what looked like two different kimonos and a hakama. What had she somehow gotten herself into this time?

I knew you would sneak in MiyaSaki wherever you can.

I can see the amount of research that went into the customs and lifestyles regarding that time. Layers of kimono hmm...I remember that very well. Social status heh...

And lol even a Heian-jidai Miyabi still has a detectable yankii aura that the modern yankii Reina can pick up on eh? Lmao. That's just win lol. I expect more chaos when Reina is presented at court...hell, just getting her into that kimono would be impressive enough.

I wonder what our dear Takahashi-sama has planned for our displaced Fukuoka yankii. XD I wonder how scandalous it would be if she took Reina in as..hmm...you know. ;) Maybe not granted official status, so....

*runs to research more*

Damnit, if Gegenschein doesn't get updated on time, it's totally your fault.

Miya and Momo are Saki consorts??? :hehehe:

i wonder what will happen to Reina now.... :?

will she become someone's consort too??? :kekeke:

So, the family and some selected ones know about the girls being Lords. I wonder how they can became Lords :?

Momo and Miya as Shimizu consorts XD Is Aichan also has consort? I mean she is 'Lord' :D

:mon inluv: I knew there would be some MiyaSaki somewhere in this.  And Risako as a lady-in-waiting?  :mon star: I'm happy that Momoko stays away from Captain's bed though.  I'm expecting the other "Lords" to have consorts of their own.  :yep:

Poor Reina. Waking up to two people staring at her while she's naked... Wait, who stripped Reina in the first place?  XD

Now what has Takahashi decided to do... It's too bad that I doubt Reina would become a consort or even a lady-in-waiting. I'll still hope for it.  :D

:mon mad: I want to see some updates for your other fics but then I want to read more of this at the same time.  :mon impatient: XD

Reina nekkid

Just the time period location right now I am wondering about, I know who is in control, just is it strong, is it weak? (sorry I am just dragging the facts out )

I am purely interested on what Reina will do and the diet XD

Haha sneaky MiyaSaki relationship here, I wonder how much this will develop over the course of the story?

Momo looking down at Reina is proper  At least Reina is starting to like Miyabi, possibly Yankee to Yankee?  XD

Why do I feel as though Takahashi has something planned for Reina, perhaps Ai is looking for a new consort herself?

Ah...everyone must be reading that handbook on what to do with unconscious people again :mon determined:   One would think they would at least give her some jammies...erm I mean a kosode thingy but nope it was just strip and fold clothes

Reina's probably lucky that it's only 3 layers XD  I can't even imagine a Lady Tanaka with 12 layers.  I mean she's so tiny...and with 12 layers...I think Reina would actually double in size XD  Throw in the shoes and the girl would probably never be able to walk all the way to the audience chamber

I wonder how awkward Reina's second meeting with Aitarou is going to be XD  I don't think she'll be hitting on Reina just yet if you know what I mean :shifty:

I'm still waiting for Reina to pull out her cellphone, if she has it with her, to prove that she's from a different time and place XD  You know how people tend to do that when time travel occurs

Ooh!! There's a Miya sighting! XD I don't know why I was initially surprised to see her pop up, seeing the significant roles she plays in your other two ongoing fics.

Makes me wonder who we'll be seeing if (when?) they go to Maimi's and Aichan's castles.  I'm definitely looking forward to seeing more in the upcoming chapters!  I noticed mention of "A Conneticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court". I haven't read it or seen the movie, so I don't quite know what to expect. XD

I'm sorry you're not a big Reina fan.

Awww, rokun, there's no need to be sorry about that! It's kinda my own fault I haven't really taken a huge liking to Reina  :sweatdrop:
But like I said, I'm all for Reina in fanfics. She can be quite interesting to read. ^___^

Quote
She tends to play a big role in most of my fics. I'm beginning to understand why you haven't read them yet. And that's okay. :)

It's not that... it's because I'm aiming to get more of the lengthier fics done - I like to read lengthy stuff as it keeps me occupied for longer, obviously. But I'm certain I'll be heading off to read your stuff soon. I can't ignore a senior's fics, nope, nope way.  :P

Quote
There are many plans... and I wonder how Reina will fit into them? Or will she just indeed get herself into trouble?

Sounds like there's going to be complications galore  XD
Reina is a part of the bigger scheme of things then? It's no random coincidence that she's been thrown back in time? And I really bet she's going to get herself into trouble. She's yankii, and yankii people are prone to get themselves into many interesting situations   :yep:

Chapter 1: Castle Shimizu, Waiting Room

Quote
Suddenly she had two girls peering down at her as if she were some strange animal.

But she is a strange animal...  XD
Reina is truly clueless, isn't she? But it definitely adds to the hilarity of her situation.

Again, whenever one of the Berryz girls is mentioned (or talking, as they have done quite a bit of this in the chapter...), I only have faces to associate with  :(
But I'm glad to be learning a bit about them and building up impressions of each girl. I hope you've painted them somewhat true to life... yah, so that I'm learning about them as I go.  :yep:

Quote
“I don’t like people just… hovering over me like that!” Then she looked down to see the sheet fallen to her legs, leaving her thighs up to her head… completely bare.

Ummmm...

I wonder who stripped her.

“Did you understand half of what she said?” the taller one asked, looking to her companion.

“Not a clue,” Momo-chan replied. “How peculiar…”

Yankii talk probably really harsh on the ears of the more civilised and genteel  XD

I found the verbal exchanges between them all to be highly amusing! It's making me crave more ReinAi interaction, actually... even though I'm not a huge fan of the pairing, I find myself wondering (and looking forward to more interaction... or confrontation, whatever it happens to be!) ...  :nervous

Quote
“You do not suppose she is a Lady in disguise?” Momo-chan said in a low voice toward her friend’s ear, never taking her eyes off Reina. “The way Takahashi-sama seemed to speak of her…”

“That’s it,” Reina barked, throwing her clothes down. “I don’t care if I’m naked, I’mma kick your puny ass…”

DAMN. It's funny how our yankii still hasn't grasped the seriousness of her situation! I mean, she's too busy flaring up at every little thing (I'm no lady! XD) to just sit back and assess everything that's happened... I'm kind of surprised, though I guess her rather fiery temperament lends to her urge to talk and take action rather than sitting back and being reflective.

Gotta wonder how she's REALLY going to react once the truth settles in and she realises that she's just landed herself in a historic era!

Quote
Reina flushed. “I certainly do not have a Lord!” she angrily protested.

 :monk gboy:

Very cute Reina...

Quote
“But a consort,” Reina continued, wanting to finally understand something. “You don’t mean…”

“It is an honour for us to fulfill our Lord’s needs, whatever may be required, but primarily within the bedchamber,” Natusyaki replied naturally.

I'm getting the feeling that she will find herself at the mercy of a Lord? The idea is a little crazy, but I'm actually really excited to see Reina try to wriggle herself out of such a predicament...   :w00t:

Is there going to be a Lord Eric who Reina will have to fall under?  XD I can imagine her being all  and then slowly falling for her master...
Oh my gah, the images in my head...  :inlove:

So OK, first chapter and a few questions raised.

I'm still waiting for the moment when Reina takes a moment to breath and goes like...  :OMG: WTF-have-I-REALLY-gotten-myself-into!!!!!!!!!!
Are we going to have such a moment? LOL.

I'm really looking forward to finding out who else is going to be featured in the story. I'm hoping (with my hands clasped) that Kamezo Eric will appear and sweep Reina off her feet  :mon cute:
Ahhhh... gomen, I tend to verbalise what I'd like to see... but of course it's your story, rokun, you probably have a lot of different stuff in store for Reina and I'm up for anything

THANK YOU FOR THE UPDATE AND PLEASE GIVE US ANOTHER CHAPTER SOON

Is this soon enough? Ok, so it probably isn't... lol. Work has been busy. @_@ Plus Essy had me working on something else that ended up even upsetting her. Anyway... Friday comment replies! Yippee~!!

Btw, thank you ALL again for your wonderful comments!! ^______^ (a comment just has to exist for it to be wonderful, btw :))

Essy-cha~n: What? What MiyaSaki? I wonder how long this next chapter will take you to research. >.> Maybe you've already done enough for it too? lol. Also, you detected Miya's yankii-aura  Her sense of fashion is still there, as well as her edginess like the competition with Momo, who believes firmly in the traditional Chinese styles, which as Miyabi's sense picks up, will soon be going out of fashion... That actually is a significant general theme of the whole story if you can pick up on it. :)

Court Ladies can be very stubborn about fashion. As for your scandal... well... I won't say anything of that at the moment (as if it isn't obvious :P). It seems I didn't make Gegenschein too late.

wai~wai: Yay Berryz fan! :D Or at least enough of one! Oh, and Reina's hair isn't dyed either. She's not the rich idol like she is in real life, having grown up on the Fukuoka streets. @_@ I hope your mouth is feeling better!!

randy demon: I hope you continue to love the depth! :) And the MiyaSaki! :D Though it's really not gonna be a huge thing lol.

abok: Mhm, consorts at this time don't necessarily mean they sleep with the Lord, although that is often the case. They are who produce the Lord's heirs. Though, each generally follows whatever her special skills are too... All this is important to know before this chapter coming up as well. XD

What will happen to Reina indeed. 8)

Aisacchan: How they became Lords is a story that should be revealed as the fic goes along. :) As for Aichan's consorts, I'll be mum for now :) but she is a very powerful Lord...

aussie: Just for you I put an Alice in Wonderland reference in the coming chapter. Or did I? O_o Maybe I just thought about it. Either way, it was just for you! XD More thinking about Reina ending up as someone's consort. Where do you people get these ideas from?

Windy (I think that's my new name for you :D): You better enjoy the MiyaSaki!!! @ your wish for Momo though lol. Hmm... other fics... XD :hmm:

kuro: Ah, you're on the right track at least. As if it isn't obvious by just the title... lol. Diet huh? Yeah, not much yakiniku back then. Though fortunately for Reina, not many carbonated beverages either...

oddball: The MiyaSaki was sneaky? Really? Things will "develop", that's for sure. One thing with this fic... because of the time period... they think of things VERY differently than we do. I'll be very interested to see reactions as the story goes on. ;) Ai isn't necessarily looking for anything. :)

Sushi: What? There's a handbook on what to do with unconscious people? Not that I'm around many... Yay you get fashion points! :D Don't count out 12-layered Reina yet though. Especially once you read this next chapter... And remember, Japanese people were in general quite small back then so Reina wasn't really alone. (I mean, just look at Takahashi and Shimizu lol)

Hmm, awkward? I'm not sure that's exactly the word.... And Ai's a powerful Lord. She has more things on her mind than hitting on cute girls... or well... supposedly... XD You also gave me an idea! :) See, this is why comments are good!! I had to think about the hair thing waiwai mentioned too.

maiZe: :D! You found this story! I hope you enjoy. :) Yes... I have a hard time leaving my favorites out... XD Though I'm trying to at least limit the cast size in this one... lol. There are more to come though. XD I mean, they aren't even to the Imperial Court yet...

Haha, yeah I suppose being Canadian lets you off the hook. :P

Bee:
You might see what I mean as you continue reading. And lengthy? Have you looked at Circle of Three or Odyssey? Hmm, I like how you put that. Yes, Reina is part of the bigger scheme of things. :) As to the random coincidence though... XD But get herself into trouble? Reina?

Hey, it takes some time for someone to believe when something totally crazy is happening to them. :lol: Give the yankii a break!! lol. I hope you do get to know Berryz through this fic and others :) Although they don't really talk this 'properly' lol... except perhaps Momo... XD;

She hasn't had the chance to sit back and think. :) There's a comment about that in this chapter. She just keeps getting pushed from one thing to another... for now... The rest of what you postulated is correct too though.

I seem to be getting the sense from some peoples' comments... I wasn't kidding when I said this was going to be an epic... lol. There'll be much much more going on here beyond having fun with a cute interaction or idea or something. Well, you'll see it shape up as it goes along I'm sure.

Back to Bee: Wow, where'd this Kamezou Eric obsession come from? I actually was careful with that in this fic. I tend not to write much about members once they've graduated...

WELL HERE YOU GO

:)

Hello! :) This took a little while, but there was a lot to put into it! @_@ This chapter is longer, and in fact is almost as long as the whole story up until now lol, but I hope you enjoy. If you have any questions let me know, though I've given a few notes at the bottom! :)

Chapter 2: Castle Shimizu, Tea Room

A disgruntled and sulky Tanaka Reina tried to walk down the hall without tripping on the bulky hakama and covering robe she had been stuffed into minutes earlier by the girls who now flanked her to either side. The girls had managed it despite her protests, since she couldn’t bring herself to fight against rather pretty girls who at least didn’t seem intent on doing her any harm. Plus, she at least managed to get her underwear and jeans back on before the first kimono layer… much to Momo-chan’s scandalized chagrin.

Along the way they were joined by a more visibly chastened Risako-chan who now sported the twin pigtails Momo-chan had directed. She fell in at Natsuyaki’s side, and another younger girl joined the Princess as well. Upon noticing Reina looking at the new arrivals curiously, and how they seemed to be somewhat fawning over and straightening the Ladies’ robes, Natsuyaki explained, “They are assigned as our maids. Please, pay them no heed. You will most always see them with us and they prefer not to have attention brought to themselves.” As if to confirm the girl’s point, the two younger ones meekly continued their duty as if no one had spoken aloud.

Reina didn’t even notice when they reached a pair of ornate doors, since she needed to focus all her attention on just not tripping over her new clothes, not to mention how hot it was within them. Summer was apparently still hanging on here as well after all, and she had no idea why the others weren’t continuously fanning themselves. She came to be thankful she didn’t easily sweat.

Two armored, and this time obviously male, guards at the doors pushed them open when the ladies arrived and bowed slightly. The guards returned their bows much more deeply, and Reina’s sensitive nose immediately caught the aroma of tea wafting from within the room. Suddenly realizing she was parched, she took the first long step of what was instinctively meant to be a sprint into the room, but her foot came down hard on the hem of her outer kimono, making her trip to the floor before the others could react.

She let out a short yelp, but hardly even noticed through the layers of fabric as she hit the ground and rolled a pace before coming to rest staring at the ceiling. Then, despite her normal agility, she realized she could not move her limbs enough to push herself up again.

Now fed up with the whole charade though, once again before the other women could reach her she tore at the obi that Natsuyaki had so carefully tied on, shedding it and the outer robe covering before kicking off the hakama as well. She now realized no one was any longer moving to help her, and only astonished and appalled gasps filled the room.

“There,” she said, finally able to rise and tying the obi to make sure the last light kimono layer was tight enough around her chest. “That’s more like it.” She kicked a leg out in relief at her returned flexibility, admiring the jeans that showed blue as it poked out of the robe, before looking up at the many people around the room who stared at her, some of the maids and soldiers even with open mouths lit fitfully from what looked like oil lamps scattered across the room.

“So what’s up?” she said, trying to lighten the tension like she usually did in such situations, although her ability to stay light and tough was slowly losing its battle against the intense fear at the situation that she’d been doing her best to completely suppress. It was a lesson she’d learned many times over on the Fukuoka streets – if you let fear rule you, you’ve lost control of the conflict, and it could sometimes be impossible to regain it. Still, she really wished Eri would pop up from nowhere and hug her and make some stupid random comment before telling her it was all a big joke. She wouldn’t be surprised if Yoshi was capable of something like this…

“I am so sorry for this, Shimizu-sama, Takahashi-sama,” Natsuyaki apologized, breaking Reina out of her reverie as she glided up to sweep the discarded robes into her arms. “I take full responsibility for failure to train her in propriety, and will humbly accept any punishment deemed necessary.” She bowed, keeping her head low, and now Reina just stared in amazement. Where was the girl who seemed so thoughtful and independent back in that bedroom?

Shimizu, who was seated on a cushion at one of the sides of a broad, low table along with Takahashi and Yajima and a few other men, set her tea down and rose. She somehow made it seem graceful despite the bulky garments she wore, reminiscent of what Reina remembered seeing in ancient artwork.

Striding over to Natsuyaki, she laid a hand on the shoulder of the bowing girl in a comforting gesture. “If there is responsibility to be had, it is mine, as this is my castle.” She darted Reina a dangerous glare before continuing, “Please take these to be cleaned and return to our rooms. I shall join you there later this eve. Momo-chan, please stay here, as your candor and refinement may be appreciated.”

Momo-chan nodded and lifted her robes to take one of the seats behind those seated on the floor at the table, and Natsuyaki bowed her way out of the room.

“I’m sorry,” Reina said a bit more quietly, feeling bad for the girl who was just told to leave. “It wasn’t her fault. Really.”

Shimizu darted that glare at her again. “As for you…” But before she continued, she looked over her shoulder at Takahashi, who was calmly sipping her tea as she sat, appearing oblivious of the whole thing. “I will be watching you,” the girl finally hissed into her ear, before taking a forceful step toward the table. She immediately seemed to think better of that though, and grandly paced the rest of the way before resuming her seat.

“Please,” Takahashi said, “Join us.” She gestured with her free hand to the vacant spot on the side of the table across from her.

Reina stepped carefully toward where she was directed, slightly intimidated by the grand sight before her. The three masqueraded women wore very bulky but lavishly designed robes and pants, all purple, but Takahashi’s of a darker shade than the other two. The remaining men wore a mixture of light purple and reds.

Trying not to be too self-conscious, she lowered herself to the floor in front of the table. Instead of sitting cross-legged as the others appeared to be, she knelt on her shins as she was nearly forced to by the kimono. She was very conscious of the stares of the others at the table – Takahashi’s calmly considering, Shimizu’s seemingly full of hate, and Yajima’s plain but rather curious. The other men though gazed almost lewdly, as if they’d never seen a woman in so few clothes before. At least she was used to those kinds of looks.

“Are you really Japanese?” Yajima asked finally, leaning forward questioningly.

“She is nothing more than a peasant woman,” one of the men said, seeming to pretend she didn’t exist even while talking about her. “I cannot imagine why she should be allowed to this table.”

“Tea?” Takahashi offered, nodding over to her.

“Thank you,” Reina said sardonically, but instead of Takahashi, one of the maids came scurrying up to bow and pour her a cup.

Shimizu suddenly brandished a knife from nowhere, causing a stir among the other men, but a second later she only began to file her nails, which appeared as long as Reina usually kept hers, though uncoloured. “Very useful, these small daggers,” she murmured idly, admiring both her nails and the knife. Was there some femininity in her after all? “Most warriors regard them with disdain, but I oft times find them useful. They are especially good for cutting out a tongue that wags too much.”

Chuckles became audible from some of the men, and even a titter from Momo-chan, who Reina could see seated next to a screen, her face hidden by her fluttering fan.

“I apologize for my vassals,” Takahashi said wryly, “They are not used to seeing someone of your… stature.”

Vassals? “And you are used to people like me?” Reina asked sharply across the table. Shimizu’s filing seemed to become louder.

“I… try to keep an open mind,” Takahashi replied, taking another sip of tea and somehow appearing like a pillar of calm in the midst of the storm in the room surrounding her. The others didn’t outwardly protest though and kept quiet, leading Reina to believe Takahashi was truly the one who held the power. Perhaps she could use that to her advantage…

“You aren’t the least bit curious?” she shot back. Whether the woman was or not, she certainly was herself. In fact, she was brimming with questions as she began to realize more and more that she very well might be stuck in this place.

Shimizu appeared to begin scolding her again, but instead Yajima spoke first, “Please, your pardon Lady, but now is not the time for questions. Instead it is a time for answers. You must realize that our and our Lord’s security is at stake, and we must know more if we are to deal with… I mean, if we are to assist you whatever your situation may be.” Somehow the girl’s charming smile and soft words helped allay Reina’s temper slightly. Fine, she would listen to them. For now. She took a swig of tea, downing the whole cup at once.

Gasps surrounded the chamber, and the eyes of everyone at the table widened again, though after a moment the bubbling laugh of the woman across from her silenced them all. “You truly are unique!” she said, setting her own tea down and smiling jovially. “First you appear out of nowhere along our path to the castle, wearing just the strangest garb, then you faint like a wisp of a lady where we had no choice but to carry you to the castle where your clothes and the items we find in them cause quite a stir. Wherever you go you cause quite a stir, do you not my little firebrand?”

Reina stared at her before some of her words fully sank in. “Items? You mean you have my cell phone? My wallet and compact?” She’d forgotten about them. They would prove to them all that… that… what? Girls obviously don’t carry cell phones and make-up wherever they go around here.

“No questions!” Shimizu barked, slamming her cup to the table. For a tiny thing, she sure had a sense of aggression.

“I’ll ask questions if I damn well please!!” Reina yelled back at her, finally at her breaking point. She jumped to her feet, nimbly this time, and moved toward the girl. However, Shimizu and the others were just as quick, and in a fraction of a second everyone around the table except for Takahashi was on their feet. None of the others seemed armed, though Shimizu brandished her dagger. Yajima just looked flustered as she tried to calm them all.

“Please! Not in Takahashi-sama’s presence!” she cried, as the Lord in question quietly took another sip of tea.

“I cannot bear another insult to my Lord, nor my household!” Shimizu replied.

“You want a fight!?” Reina yelled at her, adopting a blocking stance, knees slightly bent as she turned slightly. “I’ll give you a fight! You must be something if you’re man enough to face down an unarmed girl with that knife.”

“Shimizu-sama!” Yajima hissed, but the other ignored her.

“As you wish!” Shimizu growled in response to Reina’s challenge, one of the men waiting at the wall coming to take the proffered dagger as well as the outer robe and obi after she quickly untied it. Now she was just in a long, loose robe almost to match Reina’s.

Reina watched her carefully, unsure exactly what she’d gotten herself into as the girl tensed and straightened her arms as if to test her strength before pulling back into an attacking stance of her own. Reina felt a flicker of hope when she sensed somehow that it was indeed a bit primitive.

“This is ludicrous!” Yajima scolded, though not making a move to stop the other Lord. “I understand the insults you feel, but this is no time to make a strike at a Lady.”

“She is no lady!” Shimizu growled again, and lunged toward Reina.

Reina was ready though for what she felt was a rather clumsy attack, if seemingly well-practiced. As usual when she got into a fight since her training, time seemed to slow down, and she waited as her assailant moved quickly through the air separating them. Then, she moved more quickly.

As the girl seemed to try and drive her pointed right hand into Reina’s midsection, she chopped down with her own right and blocked it cleanly to the side, hooking the girl’s arm and using her momentum to spin around to force them back-to-back. Then she jabbed an elbow into Shimizu’s ribs before leaping in the direction the girl had just come from, quickly regaining her balance to spin back to face her.

The girl’s back was arched, her hand clutching her ribs in pain and her face a mask of surprise. Hers was not the only one, but Reina had no time to think about the others before the girl’s eyes narrowed and she spun herself, this time regarding Reina warily.

As the two girls circled each other like hungry wolves, Reina felt the dead silence in the room around her. Yajima was no longer protesting Shimizu’s actions. There were no longer any displeased grunts from the men, and even the rustling of Momo-chan’s fan was silent. Reina was used to noisy street fights, but quiet still suited her better. It allowed her to gain focus.

This time Shimizu came with her arms held back, and Reina caught sight of her knee bending before she led with a strong jabbing kick. Instead of blocking it this time though Reina leapt over the low attack, spinning in mid-air as she lashed out with her own leg. She felt the side of her foot contact something hard, and a groan split the silence. Falling to the floor backwards, she immediately jumped back up to prepare herself for a subsequent attack before noticing her opponent on the floor, groaning and holding her head as she reflexively curled toward a fetal position.

Letting herself straighten, though not relaxing completely as she was still cautious, Reina let the throbbing of the blood in her veins fade to take in the rest of the room. Two of the maids rushed up to kneel down and tend to Shimizu, who had gone still. Those who had been seated around the table just stood, shocked, alternately staring between Reina and the fallen Lord.

Takahashi sighed. “Ah, the brashness and boldness of youth,” she said, setting her tea down gently. “It is wise to be wary of what one does not fathom,” she continued in a rush of words before suddenly breaking out into soft giggles. Reina wondered how she could possibly fool anyone into thinking she isn’t a girl…

“Come! Let us drink tea like civilized people!” she pronounced, and gestured again to the table.

The others glanced awkwardly around before going back to their seats, but Reina blinked at the girl Lord in front of her whose ass she just kicked. “Um…” she said, “Not that I mind, but you’re not gonna do anything after I just knocked your Lord of this castle unconscious?”

“It is a matter of honour,” Yajima explained, still glancing disbelievingly wide-eyed at her companion Lord. “You had challenged each other, and you are the victor. You have earned…” she glanced up at Reina. “respect by defeating Shimizu-san in single combat. There are not many who can claim that. Of course, Shimizu-san does prefer to fight with blades.” Her smile now seemed lightly amused. Reina decided this “Lord” may be likeable enough as well. “I think you will be very interesting to learn from. Yes.”

After feeling her mouth twist up in a crooked, indulgent smile at the words of the crazy people around her, Reina sighed, taking her own spot at the table again and trying to ignore the prone Lord just behind her. She was beginning to feel tired, and not from the fight she just had. That hadn’t even made her break a sweat; not that it was easy to do so.

“I just want to go home,” she said as she sat.

“Yes,” Takahashi commented, taking another sip of tea. “Home. Kyushu, you say. Fukuoka. I wonder where someone like yourself might learn to fight like that in such a small fishing village.”

Fishing village…? The more she learned, the more Reina felt everything was wrong. Very wrong. Well, at least she could still defend herself apparently. If that was the extent of their skills…

“I’m sorry,” she said. “I can’t really explain.” Then she remembered something from before the fight and looked up. “You said you found strange things in my clothes. Do you, um, happen to have them still?”

Takahashi studied her a moment before conceding, “I apologize. That must come later. I also apologize if you feel lost. I cannot say I understand where you come from, but I am beginning to realize we are as strange to you as you are to us.”

“You can say that again…” Reina mumbled.

“Pardon?” the woman asked.

“Never mind.”

Takahashi took a deep breath. “I will strive my best to learn your strange speech. I would like to talk more easily with you.”

“She is from the West?” Momo-chan asked, the first time in this room Reina had heard her speak up. The girl didn’t seem the least concerned about her Lord lying unconscious not far past her feet. “Perhaps she has absorbed more of the Chinese Way than has made it as far as here.” She leaned forward interestedly, once again fluttering her fan. “Although we all saw she is skilled in bushido1, I wonder if she might have a literary sense as well.”

Murmurs broke out among the men, and Yajima said with soft amusement, “I would be careful about insulting our guest, Tsugunaga-san. I feel she may be rather undiscriminating if she gets upset.”

“Pfft,” the girl replied, waving her fan dismissively. “I’m too cute for anyone to want to harm me. No one has touched a hair on my head in my life, in fact.”

“Is that so?” Yajima asked, the amusement still in her voice.

Reina’s brain was beginning to hurt. “I don’t know what you all mean about the Chinese Way, but as you saw I have studied bushido. And I can read too, thank you very much.”

“And write?” Momo-chan asked.

“Of course,” Reina replied to the ridiculous question.

“How skilled are you at shodo2?”

“Um, I’ve done some… I just like to keep it simple though. Mostly I like to stick to kana.”

Momo-chan drew back at that. “Kana?” she asked, peering around the room. “Syllabary? What does that have to do with writing?”

“The alphabets,” Reina said, wondering if everyone around her was dumb. But they all just continued staring at her. “You know. Ka ki ku ke ko, sa shi su se so...

“Those are sounds,” Yajima commented, seeming lost. Reina was beginning to realize that was an almost perpetual expression from the girl, but at the moment she wasn’t the only one.

“Yes…” Reina said. “They make up words.”

As she continued to explain, she felt something begin to grow inside of her. She was bad at thinking, but somehow she knew that there was something very important going on right now. It was like the sum of everything that had happened since she walked into this room so ungracefully was beginning to add up. She couldn’t say to what yet though.

“Do you have pen and paper?” she asked. More blank stares. “…Something to write with.”

“Risako-chan!” Momo-chan chirped suddenly. “Fetch a quill and parchment!” Then she glanced slightly behind Reina, who turned to see Shimizu finally rising to her feet. “And fetch Miyabi-chan as well. I think Shimizu-sama will need some assistance.”

At the command, the girl Reina had forgotten was waiting along the wall along with the other attendants jumped and bowed before hurrying out of the room. She took a good look at the others. Apparently she had become as good at not seeing them as the Lords and Ladies. Then again, they obviously had realized they were there. She was beginning to wonder if Natsuyaki was right about them just always being there. Being convenient.

There was another small stir, and fussing of the maids, as Shimizu pulled on one of her covering robes while blinking groggily before striding slowly over to Reina. To Reina’s utmost bewilderment, the girl knelt beside her and bowed low.

“I apologize for my affront, my Lady,” she said humbly. It was a complete three-sixty from her earlier attitude. “I cannot begin to achieve penance, but my life is yours.” And cradling it carefully with both hands, she proffered to Reina the dagger she had made a show with earlier. “Please accept this worthless item as a token of my sincerity.”

Reina just stared down at the dagger, its sharp edge and the jewel in its hilt glimmering in the lamplight surrounding them. When she didn’t make a move, Yajima said quietly, “If you do not take the offered gift, you will deepen the Lord’s dishonor and he will not be able to show his face in gentlemanly company for many weeks. While I would not think less of you for doing so, Shimizu-sama is truly a very capable Lord and it would be a loss not to have his company.”

“Thank you…” Reina said finally, and reached up to carefully take the dagger from the girl’s outstretched hands. Shimizu lowered her bow again before retaking her place at the table, eyes downcast. Now what am I supposed to do with this? Reina asked herself as she stared at the dagger now sitting in her own hands. Shrugging, she stuffed it into her obi and turned back to the table.

Yajima was still smiling at her, obviously pleased at her actions, but Takahashi’s face was blank. Her tea also now seemed to be forgotten.

There was a rustle as someone entered the room, and Reina glanced up to see Risako-chan hurrying toward her. She knelt beside Reina with head bowed as she placed a thick piece of paper and a pot with a quill sticking out of it onto the table in front of her.

“Um… thank you?” Reina said, though the girl didn’t move.

“Miyabi-chan will come soon, yes? That will be sufficient, Risako-chan,” Momo-chan said, and Reina noticed her sweeping up behind her to shoo the girl away, her fan still fluttering to carefully conceal her face below her eyes. “You say you write with this ‘kana’,” she told Reina very business-like. “Can you write out a poem with it? How about…

“hovering, humming
mosquitoes watch hungrily
as we make love.”

Despite herself Reina blushed at the girl’s words, but nobody seemed to think them out of the ordinary. That was something she hadn’t quite expected… especially out of Momo-chan. Fighting her embarrassment though, she awkwardly dipped the quill and began writing in hiragana. This is not happening… she kept telling herself, although by now she knew it was.

The room watched silently until she finished scratching out the characters, and kept silent for another moment even after she once more deposited the quill into the pot.

“But this is nonsense,” Momo-chan breathed finally.

“No,” Shimizu said, peering over at the paper. Reina hadn’t realized the girl came back to reality yet. “I think I can see it.” She traced a line with her finger. “This is the Chinese character for virtue, is it not?”

“And this,” one of the men said, peering over as well. “This is ‘bow’. But much simpler.”

Momo-chan stared harder, and slowly her mouth began to fall open. “Well this is… This is…”

Suddenly a loud clap brought everyone out of their thoughts, and Reina looked sharply up to see Takahashi with her hands clasped above her, a look of the utmost seriousness on her face. “Leave us,” she ordered firmly. “Everyone but Yajima-san, Sazuko, and the Lady Tanaka.”

Those ordered, especially Momo-chan, looked very reluctant, but quickly, with bows and a large amount of rustling, everyone began to leave the room. In almost no time at all Reina was alone with the woman and her commanding presence, Yajima, and what looked to be one of the maids who knelt quietly with head bowed beside Takahashi.

Reina though couldn’t take her eyes off those of the woman’s in front of her. That piercing gaze from when they first met was back, but this time amplified tenfold. She felt like her breath had been completely stolen away.

“I knew it was something unique when we found you out on the hill with your strange garments and your strange way of speaking,” Takahashi said in a quiet but strong voice. “But it was not until the events in this room, here, that I realized exactly how unique.” Reina noticed her eyes drift down to the paper. “How special, to the extent of being utterly unbelievable.”

Suddenly she darted her eyes to Yajima, who bowed her head slightly in deference, though her eyes never left Takahashi’s either. Reina wondered if she had that effect on everyone. Perhaps she did, if she wielded the kind of power over others that she seemed to.

“How long do you think Shimizu-san will take to recover from the loss of honour?” she asked the girl.

Yajima appeared to fall back into thought. “If it were any normal person, I would say she might never recover. However, one as devious as herself will likely be repaired in her heart by her next awakening. Besides, Natsuyaki-san is proficient at overnight healing.”

“Yes, yes…” Takahashi replied. “I know well. Do you think she means to abide by her oath?”

“In this case, yes, my Lord,” Yajima replied slowly. “That was… a very new experience for her.”

Takahashi nodded slowly, obviously considering many things, before turning back to Reina. Upon making eye contact again, Reina realized how much she missed that gaze, and also how she’d been struck speechless since she first saw it here. What the hell? she asked herself. I’m not just some star struck girl… Still, even now she couldn’t look away.

Takahashi took in a deep breath, her posture straightening, and she spoke loud and clearly, “Tanaka Reina of Fukuoka,” she said in what sounded like a proclamation, “Henceforth, and beneath the witness of Minamoto no Yajima no Maimi, you are under my protection, and will act as personal attendant of Takahashi no Ai, Lord of Osaka and Commander of the Five Imperial Armies. I bequeath you the title of Lady Consort, and so shall henceforth be known as Fukuoka no Tanaka no Reina.”

Reina, stunned by the ramifications of what the woman said, didn’t relax herself when she continued in a less formal voice, her body also visibly relaxing as she spoke. “I believe the clan name should be sufficient. There is little enough contact with Kyushu, so you might claim to be of a small but ancient local noble family. Also, I want to impress that you will only ‘act’ as my attendant. There is no requirement of official duties, although I would hope we can have many long, pleasant conversations. Yes, I certainly hope that.” She giggled once again after she spoke, as if at some hidden joke only she knew.

Focusing her attention back on Reina, she continued, “The formality was necessary since, as Lady Consort and an attendant to myself, you will now have the highest protection possible afforded you. Shimizu-san will also protect you with her life.” Then she pondered, gazing thoughtfully into Reina’s eyes. “I wonder how many others you will sway as easily…” she half-murmured to herself, then continued, “It is good I realized this when I did, as you would have immediately been a prime target for those who are jealous of what you may represent.” Reina’s tension heightened at those words, but the woman didn’t elaborate.

“I also will honour her as sister as much as I do yourself, my Lord,” Yajima added, smiling between them.

When Reina saw the smile forming on Takahashi’s face as well, she almost felt as if she might faint again. For once, as a fraction of the enormity of what had seemed to be occurring today washed over her, she found herself completely without a good, sharp, witty, and suitably yankii comeback.

===========================================================================================

1 Bushido, as most if not all of you likely know, is generally known as the code of the warrior samurai hold their honor by. However, this takes place before samurai as we know them existed, and bushido returns to its natural meaning... the martial arts - "the way of battle".

2 Shodo, a maybe less familiar term, is calligraphy, or "the way of writing". The short conversation between Momo and Reina at this point is heavily influenced on the Chinese idea of "The Way" - the character read "-do" that ends such terms. At this time Chinese influence has just been expanding through Japan relatively recently, so these and other Buddhist/Taoist ideas are rather new to Japanese. Still, their original meanings are similar to what they are today.

:mon cute: Windy? :mon inluv:... It somehow reminds me about how moody I can be and now I no longer have the urge to call you roe.  :D

I totally expected Reina to strip down to only one layer. For some reason, I didn't expect her to have her jeans on though.

Yup, I'm still happy that Momo stays out of Saki's bed.  :yep:... Overnight healing by Miyabi? How can I not enjoy the MiyaSaki? Even if it's only implications,  :mon lovelaff:.

Saki got her ass kicked.  XD She's such a hothead in this fic. It was opposite in Circle and Sword. It's like your portrayals of Maimi and Saki switched. Oh, and I'll take the "hmm" as you're not going to update the other fics for months.

Wait... Saki likes using swords?  :inlove: <- I think I have a bit of a fetish for swords.

Overall, Ai intrigues me while Maimi just scares the crap out of me. I really expect a fight between Maimi and Saki one day.

I really don't remember anything about A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court.  :P Now how are the Lords going to use Reina? I'm wondering if they'll make her become some kind of mystic or prophet, even if only for show.

Wow, a lot happened here. She took Saki's honor and gained her protection and Takahashi's. Blew some minds with her writing and got a nifty dagger. Methinks that will come in handy. As a 'consort' she'll be spending a lot of time with Ai, so I'm thinking that she'll tell Ai more about where she's from and such and in return, Takahashi will help her learn to fit in a little better. Or maybe help her forget about getting home.

aussie: Just for you I put an Alice in Wonderland reference in the coming chapter. Or did I? O_o Maybe I just thought about it. Either way, it was just for you! XD More thinking about Reina ending up as someone's consort. Where do you people get these ideas from?

Tea party!! I likey. Coming from one of my favourite writers (and one of the few who finds RenAi attractive to write about) perhaps I should feel honoured that specific part of the chapter was just for me :D

So Reina has made life for herself in this crazy new world easier. I had half a thought that Shimizu would turn out to be a traitor at some later point in the story, the way she's all aggressive. Good to see that Reina has taken her honour and has her protection, as well as Maimi, and, most importantly, Ai's. What Ai has in the plans for her I'm really looking forward to. She's certainly intrigued by her....but is it more than that? :hehehe:

SAKI LOST! ME NO LIKEY! Nooo! :tantrum: I want a rematch - with swords! Yes. :yep:
I didn't read this Connecticut Yankee book so I only have Disney movie based knowledge and that's so useless!
Momo is a stand out for me so far in this story. I don't, she just seems to get awesome parts even when she's mostly background. Could just be because the image of her and that fan in the background constantly is easy to imagine. Plus that poem.... o_o;

Miyabi's good at overnight healing? Maimi actually managed to say this with a straight face? XD Oh them old fashioned folk, so serious.

Lol, every time Miya mentions Chinese styles becoming out of fashion, I become a little sad... just because. Silly, I know.

Oh yes and I want Nakki in this! I'm not afraid to bug you about that. :P
More Nakki would help wean me off my MM dependency? :mon innocent:

Stupid Reina, getting Miya into trouble for not being appropriate, we definalt got to see a softer side of Saki however when she came over to talk to Miya, there is definaly something more than the Lord/Consort relationship between them.

Saki has a proper fiery temper in this chapter, s this a character trait or was it just that she felt insulted by Reina, she definalty repects her alot more after Reina beat her in a fight so perhaps it was becasue she felt Reina was being rude, rather than any personel dislike towards Reina.

Maimi's Character is intresting, she seems genrally amused by event's and it seems as though she has the trust of Takahashi, even more than Saki perhaps, but I just feel as though something is note quite right where she is involved...

Ai definalty seems intruiged by Reina, I wonder if it is just curious about Reina or if it is something else, perhaps it is somethinf simple like she finds Reina attactive, or maybe she has met a person from the future before, perhaps even Ai maybe from the future herself and has been stuck in the past for many years? just a though :D

Hi Rokun!

Recently I start to read your fic! I like it very much!

Seems pretty interesting, and not only because I wish something hot happen between Reina and Ai   :hiakhiakhiak:

I didn't watch A Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court. What is that? A movie?

I don't know anything about this period, but with your fic I wish I can learn more!!

Please! Continue! I will be waiting for more! :D

Finally get to read this story and...Dang! Me likey! :w00t:

I wonder how Reina actually time-travelled to the Heian era (I'll admit I've never read the Conneticut Yankee, sorry :P). But of course, who else should she meet if not the Lord Takahashi  Somehow I get the feeling, and kinda hoping, that Reina & the Lord will have more than many long, pleasant conversations

I like how Saki's & Maimi's characters are so opposite (kinda like fire and water) and yet they complement each other so well :) If we have Momo & Miya as the Shimizu's consorts, who are the Yajima consorts? Airi? XD

New chapter! Woot!

 :otomerika:

And lengthy? Have you looked at Circle of Three or Odyssey? Hmm, I like how you put that. Yes, Reina is part of the bigger scheme of things. :) As to the random coincidence though... XD But get herself into trouble? Reina?

I've just finished All Aboard and started on Odyssey yesterday night. ^__^ ... I'm not sure what to make of the first few chapters just yet though... but I'm really curious as to where it's heading. Feels like it's going to be one big human drama xD

Cool, so I was kinda right about that... now, gotta keep that in mind while I read. The story's getting really good!  :thumbsup

Quote
Hey, it takes some time for someone to believe when something totally crazy is happening to them.

Are you sure? 'Coz I'd be hyperventilating the moment I found myself sleeping one moment and in front of some weird, historically dressed people in some foreign land the next. xD
And now that there's talk of consorts and stuff...  :shocked

Quote
Give the yankii a break!! lol.

What are you talking about, rokun?

Reina isn't even all that distressed yet. She seems like she could be on break if anything xD

Quote
I hope you do get to know Berryz through this fic and others :)

Me too. And then maybe I'll be able to expand my reading scope a little more and check out the other non-MM fics. ^___^ I'm excited! *rubs hands together*

Quote
Wow, where'd this Kamezou Eric obsession come from?.

I'm sorry >.<

Lol, that must have been a bit random. I guess just from the fact that Eri was featured in the first chapter, and that I've really been into Eri and Eric and Elizabeth lately, with all my re-watchings of H!M and stuff. ^__^ Well... Eri is my second fav following Ai-chan, after all. So I'm just hoping for more Eri is all.

Chapter 2: Castle Shimizu, Tea Room

I really liked this chapter! Lots of happenings, and I'm glad to see things pushing forward at a nice, steady pace. ^__________^

And secondly, I really like your writing too.   Very eloquent, but not too complex to follow. Enough detail to be engaging on a whole other level. Very good. Yep.  :P

Quote
The girls had managed it despite her protests, since she couldn’t bring herself to fight against rather pretty girls who at least didn’t seem intent on doing her any harm

Woooo, my gaydar going off here xD
Or should I just make it easy on myself and assume that all the girls in our fics swing that way? ^___^

Quote
She let out a short yelp, but hardly even noticed through the layers of fabric as she hit the ground and rolled a pace before coming to rest staring at the ceiling. Then, despite her normal agility, she realized she could not move her limbs enough to push herself up again.

That's one yankii entrance alright.

Quote
She now realized no one was any longer moving to help her, and only astonished and appalled gasps filled the room.

“There,” she said, finally able to rise and tying the obi to make sure the last light kimono layer was tight enough around her chest. “That’s more like it.” She kicked a leg out in relief at her returned flexibility, admiring the jeans that showed blue as it poked out of the robe, before looking up at the many people around the room who stared at her, some of the maids and soldiers even with open mouths lit fitfully from what looked like oil lamps scattered across the room.

“So what’s up?” she said, trying to lighten the tension like she usually did in such situations....

I loved this little moment! Very amusing, and the little detail about her kicking out a leg like that in relief... I could so imagine everybody gaping at this disturbingly alien creature before them, doing whatever she liked with absolutely no regard for propriety...

Reina's so out of place right now, and she even doesn't seem all that perturbed by it. xD A really enjoyable moment to imagine, this was  :yep:

Quote
Still, she really wished Eri would pop up from nowhere and hug her and make some stupid random comment before telling her it was all a big joke. She wouldn’t be surprised if Yoshi was capable of something like this…

This really is a possibility in Reina's head?

Are you serious?

LOL. How much money would Yoshi have to donate to hire this large a cast, along with all the props and costumes..  XD I can somehow imagine Eri popping up like that though. Just 'coz she's Eri.  :P

Quote
Shimizu darted that glare at her again. “As for you…” But before she continued, she looked over her shoulder at Takahashi, who was calmly sipping her tea as she sat, appearing oblivious of the whole thing. “I will be watching you,” the girl finally hissed into her ear, before taking a forceful step toward the table.

Whoa, if I'm remembering properly, this is the first time that Saki has run into Reina, isn't it? A bit of a fiery, hostile start to their acquaintance  :nervous
I'm wondering exactly what it is about Reina that's made Saki this unpleasant. Ai-chan and Maimi seem pretty cool and collected... so maybe it's just her natural temperament? She feels threatened by Reina's foreign presence?

I'm all for conflict though, so I'm liking Saki  :twothumbs

Quote
“Are you really Japanese?” Yajima asked finally, leaning forward questioningly.

“She is nothing more than a peasant woman,” one of the men said, seeming to pretend she didn’t exist even while talking about her. “I cannot imagine why she should be allowed to this table.”

“Tea?” Takahashi offered, nodding over to her.

The way she so offhandedly disregarded the prying mood of the others...

I have a feeling I'm really going to like this Ai-chan.  :inlove:

Quote
“Most warriors regard them with disdain, but I oft times find them useful. They are especially good for cutting out a tongue that wags too much.”

 :OMG:

Talk about subtle...
I'd be shaking in my boots if I were Reina... but of course, she's more of the 'you-want-to-fight-about-it?!' type.  XD

Quote
“And you are used to people like me?” Reina asked sharply across the table. Shimizu’s filing seemed to become louder.

“I… try to keep an open mind,” Takahashi replied, taking another sip of tea and somehow appearing like a pillar of calm in the midst of the storm in the room surrounding her.

Ooooo... I wonder if we should be reading into this a bit more. I had a moment's feeling that perhaps Ai-chan isn't exactly what/who she seems... well yeah, she's not a man, but does that also mean that she shouldn't be sitting there as a Lord? And the fact that she's on some supposed mission too. Can't let these little details slip the mind. I'm very curious as to what Ai-chan's up to!

Has she come across somebody like Reina before? It's possible... the way she hesitated a little in her response to Reina's question. At least, I took that as hesitation!

Quote
*Saki gets her butt kicked*

 :kickass:

Whoa, Reina! What kind of pussy fighters must these royals be... Reina could've won with both hands tied behind her back!

Her dirty street fighting must be too unconventional for them counter, I guess. But yeah, knowing how KICK-ASS Reina is -  :brucelee:
YOU GO GIRL!  8)
Reina's moment to show her 'class' to the rest, that she's not just some weird peasant woman. I wonder how many more challengers Reina will take down in the near future...  :w00t:

Quote
Takahashi sighed. “Ah, the brashness and boldness of youth,” she said, setting her tea down gently. “It is wise to be wary of what one does not fathom,” she continued in a rush of words before suddenly breaking out into soft giggles. Reina wondered how she could possibly fool anyone into thinking she isn’t a girl…

The others glanced awkwardly around before going back to their seats, but Reina blinked at the girl Lord in front of her whose ass she just kicked. “Um…” she said, “Not that I mind, but you’re not gonna do anything after I just knocked your Lord of this castle unconscious?”

Again, Ai-chan's amusedly detached demeanour is very, very attractive. I'd love to find out what it's going to take to get her all riled up (an infuriating Reina, perhaps, after spending some time being Ai's consort xD).
I also have to wonder how she can fool anybody into thinking she's a man. NO WAY.  :? Her features are much too soft and that voice...
Has she created some kind of Takahashi force that commands blind obedience and rules the kingdom through fear? xD

The image of Saki left alone lying sprawled out on the floor unconscious while everybody resumes business of tea and the like.. soooo funny!
I wasn't quite suspecting that it had to do with issues of honour and all that...
I was just thinking that since the most powerful Lord in the room was paying Saki no mind, everybody else just followed suit..  :nervous

Quote
“You said you found strange things in my clothes. Do you, um, happen to have them still?”

Takahashi studied her a moment before conceding, “I apologize. That must come later. I also apologize if you feel lost. I cannot say I understand where you come from, but I am beginning to realize we are as strange to you as you are to us.”

I have to wonder at this - are they studying Reina's items, which they will then one day be able to develop and such... and so thanks to Reina's appearance back in time, she was able to change the future too. LOL. It doesn't quite make sense if you view it on a purely logical basis... but... just a thought. It's something that often happens in time travel stories. ^____________^

Let's see if her phone and other items will be playing some significant role...  :)

Quote
“I apologize for my affront, my Lady,” she said humbly. It was a complete three-sixty from her earlier attitude. “I cannot begin to achieve penance, but my life is yours.” And cradling it carefully with both hands, she proffered to Reina the dagger she had made a show with earlier. “Please accept this worthless item as a token of my sincerity.”

Whoa! Reina should just go around beating people's asses, that would surely guarantee her a Tanaka army that she so desires!
I know I would be tempted to xD

Quote
Upon making eye contact again, Reina realized how much she missed that gaze, and also how she’d been struck speechless since she first saw it here. What the hell? she asked herself. I’m not just some star struck girl… Still, even now she couldn’t look away.

:w00t: :w00t: :w00t:

The beginnings of ReinAi...
Certainly won't help Reina still her heart when she's gotta work under Ai as a consort
But who can blame the yankii, Ai-chan's blend of hella good-looks and subtle charm = killer

Quote
"....I bequeath you the title of Lady Consort, and so shall henceforth be known as Fukuoka no Tanaka no Reina.”

As we all thought...

LET THE FUN BEGIN!

 :shakeit:

Quote
When Reina saw the smile forming on Takahashi’s face as well, she almost felt as if she might faint again. For once, as a fraction of the enormity of what had seemed to be occurring today washed over her, she found herself completely without a good, sharp, witty, and suitably yankii comeback.

 XD

Finally, a fitting reaction. Lol.

OK, so this chapter was great and I'm glad you didn't take any longer to get Reina her own title and sexy Lord (we all saw it coming for her! xD).

With Reina's 'uniqueness' and all, everybody's going to be drawn to her and eager to learn many things. I'm sure she's going to run into a few cynics though, but I have this image of Reina being somebody similar to Yoko Nakajima (from the anime The Twelve Kingdoms). Though Reina is loved and has it a lot easier already xD

But perhaps she's going to find her place in this new world and begin to fall in love with it and the people around her? Then she won't want to go back to her own reality... you get the drill, it's been done many times before.

I'm just expressing all the thoughts going through my head right now. Making predictions is a sign of a good reader  XD

I'm excited to see where you'll be heading with this, rokun. I'm sure as you've said before, this is going to be something of an epic.

Thank you for this chapter. I really enjoyed reading it, and am looking forward to the next instalment!!!

PLEASE UPDATE SOON!

Tanakacchi's yankii-ness is really tugging on me!  :on cigar: :on cigar: :on cigar:

and I like Momochi's character here :on lol:.....kinda imagining her look like their play "Edo Kara Chakushin"-Time slip to Kengai... :bingo: :bingo: :bingo:

I read this, finally! And I cannot begin to express the epicness of this story XD. It's seriously awesome what you are doing here, you know that?

:cow: :cow: :cow: :cow: :cow: :cow: :cow: :cow::cow: :cow: :cow: :cow::cow: :cow: :cow: :cow::cow: :cow: :cow::cow: :cow: :cow:

I read a lot of time ago A Connecticut Yankee, but I really didn't grasp the reference here until I started reading. For some reason when I read the title I thought of lawyers and such  XD , so I wasn't expecting this kind of story at all. I love it, so much win, really. I regret the fact I don't know much about this time period, even if I'm interested in it. Now you really made me want go to wiki and drown myself in information about it. I'll definitely do it later

I loved Kame short appearance. Too bad she is now at a distance of too many years from Reina XD I wanted her to appear more, but anyway. I really really loved my Eririn here  And Reina. Oh my God, Reina. Since the beggining, until this very last chapter she has been so yankee, and cool, and awesome, and tsundere and omg I love everything about her in this fic  Everything!

I spy ReinAi  And I like and approve it ~ I like Ai a lot here. And I am looking forward those "long, pleasant conversations" too between those two. And you threw out there Berryz, and Maimi! I not her #1 fan but I like those girls a lot. And MiyaSaki here was gold. I have been interested in that pairing lately, even if my main focus remain in MM.

But in general, all the characterisation was awesome. And the dialogues, I love how you can make conversations with a lot of humor and funny remarks without it sounding unnatural or forced in the slightest  And the fighting scene rocks. Reina being even more awesome. I hope she learn to use that dagger and kick some butts with it later.

I didn't make the usual comment with quotes because I would quote 3 chapters and this post would be endless  XD Next time, more! And I know I abused the use of awesome here, but but... It's awesome. Really Awesome. Seriously Awesome. Awesomesauce

Now go and search for your muse, your inspiration, whatever it motives you to write  XD This is one fic I wouldn't like to be on hold forever. Especially now, with Reina being "Lady Consort".  Anyway XD I'll be sure to be here next time you update, and fangirl a lot. Thanks for sharing this story, rokun  :luvluv2:

oh, this was an awesome read. I've always loved period pieces.

I know, right? It's always the same in period drama on TV- no one would realize until the big reveal, usually disappointing, as it is always because of some guy she liked. no fear of that happening with Takahashi-dono.

i'm looking forward to the next chapter already.

I LOVE THIS FIC!!!
sorry for noticing it late, i wouldn't have, not until i realized it is rokun's work
from the last fics of yours i've read, this is something new and refreshing
still kept that 'interesting' feeling while reading, and the excitement for the next chapter.

i'm not fond of quoting, but this caught my eye.
Quote
Besides, Natsuyaki-san is proficient at overnight healing.”
ok. am i thinking right...?
it amuses me, with such great use of royal/old way of speaking. it kinda lessens the malicious approach.
ahh~! i also remembered this
Quote
“hovering, humming
mosquitoes watch hungrily
as we make love.”
i thought it to be funny. nothing out-of-ordinary
momo's character is interesting. i'm a big momo fan, so i'm so grateful that you give her notable roles in your fics.
i had this image as i imagine her character. (http://j-ongaku.org/wiki/File:Img562sxaxs.jpg)

looking forward for more. love lots rokun's fics. :twothumbs

So now I'm actually making progress on this... I thought I'd do comment replies since I wanted to properly thank you all and prevent myself from doing it perhaps late at night some time when I just want to get the next chapter posted. I'm really getting into the research for this story, but unfortunately most of the meat is further down the road. Hopefully inspiration will carry me on to get there though. I actually bought a book that I'm kinda waiting for and I'm sure will help me out as the story goes on... so tanoshimi! Anyway, onto the important stuff!!

kawaii biimu: This fic is gonna mostly end up with standard pairings I think. Though with a few twists... Reina will begin to realize the full effect of her new post right away~

kuro: Some things may not be completely contemporary, but Reina will have an influence on things as well. :) Although I think from now on it'll begin to get even more authentic... Also, if there's anything to do with Saki, there's a lot going on with her so you'll just have to keep an eye on it.

Windy: If you like that little nick, I shall have to call you by it from now on. At least socially. ;) Reina's gonna have a time with those clothes she brought with her. XD She may be unexpectedly bailed out though in one respect... There will be more than "implications" of MiyaSaki before too long ;) Among other things. I'm curious what people are gonna think when more of Saki's character and history is revealed. ;) But why scary Maimi? Just that cool, calm arrogance? XD There's a reason behind that too... part of which has been hinted at so far if you know a bit of history. ;) Don't worry though, eventually everything will be made much clearer.

rndy dmn: She'll start to learn to fit in, but not all from Aichan. Aichan is very busy after all, and you'll learn why before long. ;)

aussie: I don't know if Reina's life will be "easier" necessarily. "Different", and "more complicated", definitely.

Kuji: Lol you and your Saki bias. Nice and extreme too... As for the Disney based knowledge, XD... That story is generally just a very basic frame for this one, so it probably works as well as anything lol. I've seen the Disney movie too! XD Everyone's liking Momo... I'll have to make sure to pay enough attention to her in the future. Yes, these "old-fashioned folk" are more serious about things that we might not be in our protected modern world. *pats your Chinese self* You might have to wait a bit for potential Nakki sighting. :P

oddball: Saki didn't like Reina from the moment she laid eyes on her for some reason. I have a feeling though... perhaps she isn't too far off in thinking Reina's dangerous? All of you skeptical of Maimi. I find it amusing how you get that from what's happened so far.

kameririn: Hey there! Welcome to the fic, and nice to see you around. :) I hope after these few months you're still around somewhere... A Connecticut Yankee has been made into movies, but it's originally a novel by Mark Twain. I hope you do learn more from this fic! :D

badsaints: Wow, hey there! Don't see you lurking around my fics much. :) You're very welcome. Don't think too hard about how Reina got there. There's a bit of suspension of disbelief element here. ;) Glad to see your interpretation of Saki and Maimi, and as for Maimi's company... you'll have to wait and see!

Bee: I hope tests are going well? How'd you enjoy those other stories? >.> I know it's been a while now... and I didn't know Eri was your second favorite. I'll have to keep that in mind. :)

Thanks so much for your compliment! That's exactly what I try to do with my writing, so I'm glad it comes across. Haha gaydar. XD It's probably best to assume around here lol, but at least here, it's more of a situational thing... since certain characters don't really have much choice. Oh, and the kinda not-very-moralistic society going on around here helps. XD

I'm happy you like little details like that too. :) And don't be too hard on Reina - it's her last gasp trying to hold onto sanity. Saki met her once at the very beginning :) and there's no shortage of conflict in the Heian court... (though generally not physical >.>)

Everyone's getting suspicious of Aichan too... What? You think not everything in my stories is what it seems to be? :ph43r: More will be revealed as time goes on... Not much has happened yet still, really. I mean, we're not even to the imperial palace. Also I dunno about Reina's items, but she may possibly have an effect on the future. Again, there's an awful lot more to this story than has been revealed so far...

At the moment, Reina has no choice but to deal with this reality, so she's doing what she can. :)

ayase: Hey there! :D My cutest commenter! ^___^ Glad you're reading since I'm not sure if this is necessarily really up your alley. i'll have to throw some MiRii your way a little though at least. ;) Thanks again!

Ropy-chan: Yay for de-lurking! :D I hope you think it continues to be awesome!  :mon thumb: Yeah, not so much lawyers in this story, but perhaps some Confucian code.  I hope to see your "quoting" comment next time! :D  And nothing can be too awesome!!! Hopefully the inspiration has hit :) ...at least for now. :P

All right, here we go! A little sooner than I expected even. :) Some explanation starts in this chapter, but I hope you still enjoy.

Chapter 3: Castle Shimizu, Reina's Quarters

“Fukuoka no Tanaka no Reina…” she muttered to herself as she stared down at the mat lying on the floor which seemed to be her bed. The coverings actually seemed to be of very fine raw silk, with a fluffy-looking pillow that surprised her. Upon showing her to her room, which was nearly adjacent to Takahashi’s, Sazuko explained to her that any Lady of decent standing would have a pillow like that. For the men though, it was a different story… even those posing as such.

After getting her settled the maid Sazuko had left, only to be replaced soon after by Risako-chan. The younger girl just stood meekly by the door with her eyes downcast, looking for all the world like Reina didn’t even exist in the same room with her. When Reina asked her what she was doing, she only said quietly and with extreme politeness that she was to attend her in case there was anything she needed during the night.

“Does that mean you’ll be sleeping in here too?” Reina asked, perplexed, glancing around the decent-sized room with wooden walls reinforced at the corners by thin stone runners. “’Cause there’s only the one bed…”

“Pardon my Lady, but Risako will not sleep. She will stand and keep watch until my Lady wakes in case my Lady would have need of anything during the night.”

Despite the overuse of formality she seemed to be getting used to the girl’s ever-present vigil, but it still creeped her out a bit to just have someone… constantly standing there motionless. At least there was a screen she could pull out to change behind, although she knew her silhouette would still be visible. That is, if the girl ever looked up from the floor.

Sighing over at the small pile of clothes which included her dirty underwear, the dagger from Shimizu lying on top, she felt very exposed beneath just the light silken kosode robe. There was no way she would be able to wash them every day – they certainly wouldn’t have washing machines here – so she was going to have to figure out something to do about that. That, or just live with it.

Tucking the silk between her legs again though, she wondered if she could ever get comfortable with feeling so… exposed! Of course the Ladies around here didn’t seem to jump around and fight like she was used to doing, so perhaps it worked out for them. Perhaps she could find out what Takahashi and the other two wore beneath their kimonos… If they were really trying to be men, they’d surely have some kind of fundoshi loincloth at least. Maybe it wouldn’t be necessary to wear men’s undergarments in addition to the outer clothes, but given the opportunity, she couldn’t see why they wouldn’t!

As if the thought was a summons, she heard the door being pushed gently open by Sazuko, followed by a confidently striding Yajima now out of most of her formal attire and sporting just a men’s kosode and light purple hakama of her own below hair done up now in a straight ponytail. Reflexively pulling her own robe tighter around her, Reina thought about how busy Sazuko seemed. She had helped her settle in earlier, and otherwise seemed to also attend both Takahashi and Yajima.

A thought struck her. “Is Sazuko one of your consorts, Yajima-san?” she asked the girl Lord as she seemed to scrutinize Reina’s room.

Immediately after she spoke, she saw Sazuko freeze in the process of closing the door, and Yajima’s eyes flashed to her. “I cannot say that she is,” the girl responded in obviously forced, and surprised, politeness. “She belongs to the household of Takahashi-sama, but is given as my attendant until I reunite with my own, most of whom are currently residing in Heian-kyo.” Looking into her eyes, Reina thought the girl might be offended, but her face quickly fell into a warm smile.

She glanced over at Sazuko again, who had managed to get the door closed but now seemed to be watching the floor even more studiously as she shuffled to stand beside Risako-chan. Sazuko was certainly not as young as Risako, but didn’t appear to be too much older than Yajima or herself. She wished she’d paid more attention to history courses before she dropped out of high school, so maybe she’d have some idea of the connections people had here.

“Sazuko,” Yajima said in a softer and more pleasant voice. The woman bowed slightly as she stood. “I still do not see proper kimonos and hakama for Tanaka-sama here.”

“I am so sorry,” Sazuko replied, bowing lower. “It was difficult to obtain appropriate clothing at such short notice with current availability in the Castle. Natsuyaki-san has some of her ladies on a search, and plans to have them brought when she visits later this eve.”

“Will you go to assist her in that endeavour?” Yajima requested. “Risako-chan should be sufficient for anything we may need.” Sazuko bowed low with a flush in her cheeks before scurrying out the door.

“I’m sorry,” Reina said, frustrated at trying to understand what was going on around her. If it was going to be like this all the time, she didn’t know how much longer she’d be able to hold out. “I didn’t mean to offend you.”

“Offend me?” Yajima asked, blinking in obvious surprise. “You have done nothing of the sort.” She glanced around the room again, somewhat distastefully this time. “Tell me… Does the arrangement in here please you? Would you like a larger screen?” She then walked over and ran a hand up and down its edge, as if admiring the floral artwork knitted across the panels.

Reina frowned in confusion at the question, and now that Yajima was looking the other way, also caught Risako take what looked like a rather surprised glance of her own up at the Lord. “Um… I think it’s all right.” She was small after all, and didn’t take up that much space to change.

Yajima turned to smile kindly back at her. “You know I regard Takahashi-sama as sister and dear friend, do you not?”

Reina hesitated a second before responding. “I heard you mention that earlier when we were with her. Why?”

“It is a bond that drives how we act in relation toward all, as well as each other,” the handsome female Lord replied cryptically. “Or at least, how we must appear to act.” Then she strode up to stand just before Reina and peer curiously down into her face. Reina pulled her robe tighter again as she tried not to blush at the girl’s proximity. “I asked you before if you were truly Japanese, but now I am certain you are.”

“Of course I am,” Reina grumbled somewhat indignantly.

Yajima’s face never wavered from that impassive smile. “The most striking chrysanthemums may never grace the throne.”

Reina stared back into the smooth face above her. Flowers? Was she supposed to go looking for some to take to Kyoto?

Then the Lord took a step back, though Reina glanced down to find one of her hands held in the other’s, her fingers being pressed around something. When she glanced back up into Yajima’s face, the smile was gone.

“Be wary of Shimizu-san,” the Lord warned carefully, before striding to the door.

Risako-chan jumped to open it as if she’d been expecting the movement at any moment, and bowed her out. When she closed the door, she openly stared at Reina.

“What?” Reina asked. “Are you going to talk now? I’d be grateful if you did so I could maybe figure out what the hell is going on around here…”

“What did Yajima-sama give to my Lady?” the girl asked in an obviously curious voice. Reina blinked and stared down at her closed hand again before opening her fingers to find a small, rolled bit of parchment. Risako’s eyes became as big as saucers. “A letter!” she exclaimed, and rushed over to Reina’s side.

Reina, half-surprised at the sudden lack of modesty from the young attendant, kept staring a moment before picking at the roll to try and figure out how it opened. Distracted by the girl next to her who Reina, if she hadn’t known better, would have thought was bouncing on the balls of her feet in excitement, it took her a little longer than it should have to break the seal and unroll it. Not that she was used to breaking court seals on letters to begin with.

She stared down at the solid lines of Chinese characters until their meanings finally started to sink in. As she started to connect them into meaningful phrases, her own eyes widened and she definitely felt a blush filling her face more strongly as she read on.

“WHAT THE HELL!?” she suddenly burst out, and Risako-chan jumped in shock at the reaction.

“…Pardon me, my Lady?” she asked timidly, and not just a bit fearfully.

Reina squinted harder, now frowning down at the thick paper. “What. The. Hell. Does. This. Mean?” she growled between gritted teeth.

Risako-chan glanced over her shoulder and scanned slowly. “It describes the lone chrysanthemum…” she commented thoughtfully. “That refers to my Lady, of course, after the Lord’s clever—”

“I can read it well enough for that!!” Reina burst out again, and this time the girl jumped half a meter back, clutching her chest. Reina just waggled the paper at her. “Why the hell would she write something like this?”

“The Lord wrote it to my Lady,” Risako replied, scrutinizing her warily as she caught her breath. “Is… is my Lady displeased?” Her eyes donned that fearful look again.

Reina took a deep breath, trying to calm herself down, and looked at the letter again. “No,” she replied finally. “I’m not—” she shot a look at the girl. “I’m not displeased.” Glancing back to the letter, she grumbled to herself. “So what was all that about sisters and stuff?”

The door opened again, and maids bowed and came shuffling in with armloads of fabrics, generally colored a dark purple or a dark red. At the end came Natsuyaki, her head bowed but her eyes carefully observing those before her.

“Thank kami-sama,” Reina breathed, and dropped the letter to meet the newcomer. Before she took a step, she heard Risako-chan squeak and drop to her knees hurriedly to catch the letter before it hit the floor.

“Risako-chan,” Natsuyaki snapped briskly. “What are you doing? You have been acting very unseemly today.”

Instead of being modest as usual though, Risako-chan scurried straight over to her Lady past the other maids who were finding places for all the silks they’d just brought in, and leaned up to whisper excitedly into her ear. Natsuyaki listened carefully, her eyes drifting to the parchment in the girl’s hand, and at the end she took it gently from the girl.

“Thank you,” she said politely, and turned her attention to Reina, who had stopped at the young girl’s movement. “Is my Lady displeased?” she asked in imitation of her assistant.

“Why does everyone keep asking me that!?” Reina lamented. “And by the way, what’s with this “My Lady” stuff from you too? I thought you didn’t even think I was one.”

“So sorry, but circumstances have changed, my Lady,” Natsuyaki replied with a short bow. “Now that you have been named Takahashi-sama’s consort, you outrank the rest of us lowly Ladies by far. Momo-chan and I do not even have a court rank yet since we are still young.”

“Court rank?” Reina asked. She knew she’d learned something about this from the history books, and again mentally slapped herself for not paying attention. But at that time it was just history. What did it really matter what a bunch of dead people did hundreds of years ago? That is, until now.

Natsuyaki peered thoughtfully at her, and Risako-chan just looked dumbfounded, but as the maids seemed to finish their work and begin to depart, she walked over to take her arm and guide her over to the chairs behind the screen. Reina just realized another had apparently been added as well by one of those maids. They each took a seat, Reina stuffing the silk down between her legs again but Natsuyaki seeming to have no problem with her own.

“Takahashi-sama, to her great fortune, has been awarded the lower senior fourth rank by His Highness,” the girl began. “Any consort of hers, with rare exceptions, would also have such a rank bestowed upon her by the next cycle. Yajima-san has similarly been awarded the lower senior fifth rank, while Shimizu-san, due generally to her weaker heritage, is the lower junior fifth rank. Please understand that this is still quite an honor for one such as her, since until recent times Shimizu-san’s clan has had no history in the aristocracy.

“Yajima-san and Shimizu-san both are also subordinates to Takahashi-sama in the Palace Guards and Ministry of War, which Takahashi-sama leads as Minister. The titles are largely ceremonial however… except when she carries out a campaign as His Highness’s Seii Taishogun, such as the northerly one we currently return from.”

Reina stayed silent a moment to try and sort all this new information out in her mind. Hearing the girl’s description did jog her memory a bit at least. It had to do with an ancient Chinese ruling system of some kind which Japan adopted around this Heian era. Either way, it was well over her head.

“So where does that leave you?” she finally asked. “And Momo-chan, I suppose.”

Natsuyaki smiled at her words. “As I said, we are still too young to receive court rank. I am fortunate to be born into a prestigious clan, so it’s expected I shall receive senior fifth rank lower, similar to Yajima-san, which is what she was bequeathed.”

“So you’ll be ranked higher than Shimizu-san?” Reina asked.

“Yes…” the girl replied. “Please understand that ranks are normally granted on an individual basis, except in cases at the top level such as the Grand Council.”

“Grand Council?” Reina asked, trying still to keep everything straight since she had a feeling it would be important to remember for the future.

Natsuyaki nodded. “The Grand Council proudly governs all of Japan. It is led by the Prime Minister, or when he is absent, as has been the case for the past decade, by the Ministers of the Left and of the Right. We are fortunate to have two Lords newly assigned to those posts, as they had also been vacant for a period of time. The heads of each Ministry, such as the Ministry of War, are supervised by them.”

It was beginning to come back to Reina now, especially since she realized it wasn’t all that different from she was used to back home. Home? This was her home now…

“Is something wrong?” the girl asked, concerned. “You suddenly seem saddened by something.”

Reina shook her head. “No. It’s okay. I was just remembering… It’s not important.”

“Please speak your mind,” Natsuyaki requested, leaning forward curiously. “Takahashi-sama is very interested to learn all about you, and for the time being at least, I hope you feel free to talk to me as well.”

Reina stared back into that smiling, honest face, and finally sighed. “Actually what I’m most concerned with… um… Do you guys really not have panties around here?”

“Panties?” the girl asked, perplexed, sitting back again, and Reina tried not to blush.

“Underwear,” she stated, and pushed down the silk again. “Something to cover you up.”

She was still greeted with a confused face. “Underwear? Is not a kosode covering enough?”

Reina grunted, knowing she wasn’t getting through, and strode over to her pile of clothes. Putting the knife aside, she dug out her panties and showed them to the girl.

Rising herself, Natsuyaki swayed over to her to peer at the article. Reina felt the blush rising a bit higher. “Ah! This is like fundoshi,” she stated. Reina nodded. “Why would women have need of fundoshi? It is much more easily accessible this way.”

“Accessible…?” Reina asked, then truly did blush when the girl continued just staring into her eyes. “Ah…” Once again, she was at a loss for words.

“Speaking of such,” Natsuyaki said, lifting a finger to her chin as if pondering. “I hear Yajima-san was present shortly before I arrived.” Her gaze returned to Reina’s, and it seemed like she was looking for some sort of response from her.

“Yes…” Reina replied, still trying to get the culmination of their last subject out of her head. In her gang they were pretty free in talking about things, but this… and in this setting…! It was like she was in a Disney fairytale, but one that at times turns incongruously perverted. “Only for a few minutes. She asked if everything was okay with the room, then said some odd things and left.”

The girl’s eyes drifted to the letter she still held in her hand. “And was everything to your fancy?” she asked, now definitely fishing for something, though Reina had no clue what.

“Well… I suppose except for my clothes…”

Natsuyaki glided slowly over to her pile and stared at the dagger for a moment. “By now you know of Momo-chan and myself, Shimizu-san’s consorts. If she lasts, I expect Shimizu-san and I will marry one day also. It would be advantageous for her, and I would be pleased. For now, I serve how I am able.” She turned again to Reina, her face serious. “Yajima-san has only one young maid, and it is unlikely they will be married. She has shown no general interest yet, and so…”

She stepped toward Reina again. “I do not know where you come from, be it the West or somewhere I may only dream of, but do you realize the difficult burden the three Lords bear? As aristocrats of high standing they are expected to marry and have families, but are incapable of achieving that naturally.”

“Yes,” Reina nodded, swallowing. “I understand that. Honestly I was a bit confused at how like you and Momo-chan could be Shimizu-san’s consorts. Especially with what you said about…”

The girl across from her held her eyes strongly, and Reina thought this Lady at least would be worthy of whatever rank the Emperor granted her. “It was of necessity that they took consorts to begin with, even if they have not yet married. For appearances, you see. However, over time…” She glanced at the knife again, and reached out a finger as if to touch it, but something held her back.

“It is not very unusual for court ladies to develop romantic or sexual feelings toward each other, even though such trysts must be kept secret.” She turned back to Reina with a grin. “Then again, that is true for all such affairs that do not involve one’s husband, ne?”

Reina chose not to answer, and just continued staring blankly.

“In unique situations such as Shimizu-san’s, or Yajima-san’s, or Takahashi-sama’s, such feelings must develop all the more. Or so I believe.” Her grin faded and her eyes grew in intensity once again. “I love Shimizu-san, and would do anything for her. I desire her, and have the good fortune that she also desires me. I cannot speak for all consorts, but that is how I feel. As the woman she is, or even if she were a man, I would love her the same.”

Despite the intriguing revelation, Reina felt herself don a soft smile. “That’s very sweet,” she complimented the girl. “You’re lucky to have each other.”

The other swallowed as if choking back unshed tears, and turned away to collect herself. Somehow, Reina now felt more certain than ever that she and this girl could be close friends, and she laid a comforting hand on her shoulder. Such a friend was something she knew she needed if she was to survive here, and she didn’t know who else it could be. There was no way she could relate to Momo-chan. Takahashi and Yajima were… different toward her. And Shimizu…

“Be wary of her,” Yajima had told her just before she left. What did the girl mean? The Lord of this castle had seemed to hate her, but then it just completely seemed to disappear. Was that all a front?

“Lilies drift along
In the marsh as the wind chills
Alone, beautiful.”

“Your poetry is also beautiful,” Reina complimented, and the girl turned back to her. She glanced at the hand on her shoulder, and raised a finger of her own nearly to Reina’s lips.

“You are an unusual person, Tanaka Reina from Fukuoka,” she replied, and then seemed to catch a breath and glanced down to the bit of cloth still held in Reina’s other hand. “As for those, we can have our seamstresses study them to see if they can be replicated, but in the meantime the maids will wash them along with your other… clothing… during the nights. I assume you would not need them for sleep?”

Reina grinned. “I think I can survive,” she said, and the other smiled.

“Risako-chan!” Miyabi called, and the girl stood attentive. “Please find a maid in the hall who can take care of Tanaka-san’s clothes. They must be ready for her by morning!”

“Yes, my Lady,” Risako-chan responded, and hurried over to pick up the clothes. She eyed the knife warily as Reina handed her the last garment before darted out the door.

“You are a High Lady of rank now,” Miyabi told her, more formally. “There is nothing that cannot be arranged to your liking.”

“If that’s the case…” Reina said slowly, appearing to ponder, “Then I’d like for you to call me Reina.”

“The Lady Reina, then,” the girl replied, smiling again.

Reina made a show of sighing. “Well, I suppose that’s good enough…”

She made for the chairs so they could chat a bit longer, but the other made no move to follow. “I apologize, Reina,” she said sorrowfully, “But I must return to Shimizu-san tonight.”

“Oh,” Reina said, feeling a little disappointed. She had hoped the girl could stay with her longer and maybe begin teaching her how to be a Lady. She almost laughed out loud at the thought, but yawned instead. It had been another long day…

“I do have one last question though,” she said tentatively.

“Yes?”

“The letter. Her words…” Reina began, a bit anxiously. “Was Yajima-san coming onto me?”

Miyabi smiled. “It appears that way. And it is happy for us to see her showing an interest.”

“I see…” Reina replied, chewing her lip in worry. “But, I’m, er… Takahashi-san’s consort, aren’t I?”

“You are not married,” the girl replied as if it were obvious. “And even if you were…” She shrugged. It seemed once again also that she was looking for something from Reina.

“Thank you,” Reina replied. “Miyabi,” she added after a second.

“Sleep well, Reina,” the girl replied kindly. Risako-chan slipped back in as she spoke, her arms now empty.

“Thank you also for being a friend to me.”

The other only continued to smile as she whisked out the room.

“Shall I snuff the lamp, my Lady?” Risako-chan asked.

Reina nodded, yawning again, and looked to the bed. For all she was over a thousand years into the past, it didn’t look all that different from her own futon. “You get some sleep too,” she told the girl, and tossed some of the extra bedding that’d been brought over toward her.

“I am sorry, but then I could not assist in case—”

“I’ll wake you up,” Reina replied, lowering herself into her own sheets. She didn’t say it, but if she needed anything she’d just help herself. She was really not used to so much silk…

“Um…” the girl responded, seemingly at a loss now for an appropriate denial. She glanced a bit nervously at the door, but then glanced at Reina who continued unconcernedly tucking herself in. “Thank you.”

Shortly after, the room was still but for the even breathing of the sleeping girls.

The underwear part was quite interesting, especially for them, its foreign (I had that thought when I remembered about this era) Oh well I guess Reina seems more understanding of the time rather than fighting them conceptually.  Anyways, I wonder if religion becomes a factor in your story, I might as well wait but if not, no problem

Wow, that was pretty quick. XD Glad to see you got your inspiration back. Reina seems to be slowly settling in and at the same time still fighting. I guess it wouldn't be Reina if she didn't push back, though. I'm interested to see where this is going still and what changes(and upsets) she'll make in this time.

Hmm, quite a few intresting revelations in this chapter, Suddenly Reina seems to outrank alot of the other people in this story, to some like Miyabi and Momo this may not seem to be of much importance, as they will both eventually have rank and will get what they have been expecting for a while but to someone like Saki, how has had to earn her rank, it must make her angry for Reina to suddenly turn up and then find out that she will eventually outranker her!

So Maimi might have an intrest in Reina, this would make sense, even if romance is not involved Reina would be a good match for Maimi's future, Maimi is definatly an abitious girl and there is perhaps some rivalry between Saki and Maimi....

So Miya and Saki are in love (I assume Momo knows about this?) and this in itself is not surprisng, what is intresting is that Miya will one day outrank Saki, I wonder if that plays on Saki's mind at all, also Reina and Miyabi seems to be getting closer, not romantically but as friends, I just wonder if this may cause some misunderstanding in the future?...

this is really awesome...

fundoshi... but more accessible in that way. hahahah

if i'm not mistaken, sazuko is airi... right?
and maimi taking interest for reina. whahah. unexpected.
so, so, so.. miyabi and saki are in love. saki maybe having bad feelings towards reina after the defeat, and miyabi now gaining close ties with reina. then in the future, it might cause conflict.

wanna read the next chapter!!!

I can't believe it! It's... it's... an update!  :w00t:  I saw it the other day but I couldn't read it. But now... NOW I CAN  :cow: I haven't much time though, so I have to be fast  XD

A lot is going on in this chapter ~  And it's still awesome  :cow:

Reina still doesn't seem to understand fully what her new position means. In a few hours she went from Stranger to Uber Powered Fukuoka Lady, so she will need some time to get used to it, I guess XD Aah, but clueless Reina is lovely. Always asking the wrong questions and stuff, and with her yankee self showing up here and there  I love it.

All the explanation about ranks and all that was neccesary, for both Reina and readers I think XD They are an important matter here, so is interesting to know how things work for them. I wonder if it bothers Saki that Miya will outrank her with time...

And the letter thing. Risako losing her manners and Reina being a yankee about it  XD So much fun, I loved it. So Maimi interested in Reina? Like, for real? :shocked Wow, I wonder what is going to happen with this. I have the feeling it will be something worth to read. I wonder if with all this "is like my sister" thing what she really wants to say is "sister share their things, so Takahashi won't mind sharing you with me"  XD Love when Reina is confused saying something like she's already Takahashi consort, and Miyabi is like "So what? Not a problem  "

And who is Maimi's consort? About her, we only know she is young, right?  Hmm... I think I'm going to re-read again from the first chapter in case I forgot/slipped important information.  This is the kind of fic who make me want to do a lot of stupid speculation. That's a good sign

The whole situation with the clothes was a lot of fun, but this was the best part, really XD It's just like Reina described, a perverted Disney tale  Ah, this lovely time period will bring us a lot of hilarity thanks to Reina ~

And ReiMiya bonding  is wub, two yankees from different time periods being friends. Bring on the yankee power XD I hope Saki will not be a problem in this. I mean, if Captain doesn't like Reina too much, maybe she doesn't want Miya being with her like that. I like this friendship, don't screw  it

MiyaSaki is so sweet   But for some reason I have a bad feeling about it. I hope is just a bad feeling. I trust you and your love for MiyaSaki rokun, so I won't worry about it.

I'm so so so so so so happy you updated  Thanks for this chapter, and for all your efforts writing this!

Are their age differences changed for creative license's sake? Yajima's portrayal is incredibly sexy- her lineage and upbringing would most definitely bring about this serene aura of authority, despite being the younger. All this, and i probably can't even pick her out of a lineup of Berryz and C-ute.  :shocked Blasphemy.

You fill in their personalities and characters incredibly well. I actually read this twice, and then started from the beginning again to reread the entire story.

:thumbsup nice deshita. looking forward to more.

WOAH!!!! This fic is becoming every time more interesting and...intriguing :w00t: I really like this chapter.

MMM... MAIMI IS COMING ONTO REINA! OMG!  :mon spit: That was very surprising! I thought  Takahashi-sama was the only interested in the beautiful Reina.

Well, I have to say that I love Maimi and more in your fic, she's so cool!  :inlove: and Miyabeam too!  She's so nice and loves Shimizu-sama so much  :mon lovelaff: That part was really sweet.

I can't wait for more!!!!  :panic: I'm going to die if I don't read the next chapter soon! And I'll be pleased if the handsome Takahashi-sama make an other lovely apparition :mon crazyinlove:

Thank you Rokun, thanks to you I'm learning a lot  :mon squee: I'm so happy!

because even with my so called Major-Edit.. my comment was still crap.. :nervous
also because this needs to bumped..  :P

Chapter 2:
Quote
She came to be thankful she didn’t easily sweat.
 i don't think Reina even got sweat glands.. XD perhaps she perspires through her tongue?..

Quote
Still, she really wished Eri would pop up from nowhere and hug her and make some stupid random comment before telling her it was all a big joke.
i wish this too.. that Eri would pop up that is..

Quote
She wouldn’t be surprised if Yoshi was capable of something like this…
muahahaha.. i don't think that, that Yoshi boy is smart enough to pull something like this..

Quote
That hadn’t even made her break a sweat; not that it was easy to do so.
i love how you keep bringing up Reina's inability to sweat.. :on lol: i have never seen a picture or video where she is sweaty..  XD

Quote
"Besides, Natsuyaki-san is proficient at overnight healing.”
 that is one way of putting it.. XD

Quote
Upon making eye contact again, Reina realized how much she missed that gaze, and also how she’d been struck speechless since she first saw it here. What the hell? she asked herself. I’m not just some star struck girl
oh but you are Reina, from the first moment you set eyes on her.. XD and her unyielding gaze doesn't help your situation either! no one is strong enough to resist it..  :P

Chapter 3
Quote
“It is a bond that drives how we act in relation toward all, as well as each other,” the handsome female Lord replied cryptically. “Or at least, how we must appear to act.”
is Maimi up to something aside from hitting on Reina..

Quote
“Be wary of Shimizu-san,” the Lord warned carefully, before striding to the door.
seriously what is up with her?..  XD

Quote
“Ah! This is like fundoshi,” she stated. Reina nodded. “Why would women have need of fundoshi? It is much more easily accessible this way.”
no matter how many times i have reread this, this part gets me every time!!

Quote
"Yajima-san has only one young maid, and it is unlikely they will be married. She has shown no general interest yet, and so…”
as i have only become a YajiSuzu shipper recently.. this only caught my attention now.. XD might it be Airi that young maid?.. although reading that she has not shown a general interest.. kills the YajiSuzu fanatic in me.. LOL.. good thing there is the word YET next to it.. :P so there is still hope!! :on lol:

i wanna know how Reina got in the alternate(?)/past(?) world.. though that might not be answered until the fic is nearing its end..  XD
'oh and will you be 'showing' us what is happening in the 'current' world of Reina??..  :?  :P2

Based on Japanese history made this story more interesting :D

Hmm I have a lot of questions in my head :?

Saki got two consorts :O What about Ai-chan? Did she has any consort?

Who is Sazuko? Airi?? :huhuh

..And Maimi's hitting on Reina!!?? :shocked What about Airi?? :shocked

What will happen next? Couldn't wait for the next chapter XD

^ Don't worry, I haven't abandoned this fic. :) I'll get back to it eventually, but there are some other things I want to take care of first (though inspiration could strike at any time...)

Also twintt, welcome to the thread! And I'll answer some of your questions :) I'll answer everyone else's when I get close to having a new chapter~

Yes Ai-chan has consorts (including Reina now, remember ). More will be made clear once they arrive in the capital. They've just been off at war, and didn't take everyone with them. :) You'll see more of Maimi's "household" too

And this seems to be a question everyone has... but no, Sazuko is not Airi  I didn't even think of that when I named her, but I see why some think that. XD She's just an OC.

Also, I might have mentioned it before, but due to the culture of the period, don't expect too much of a monogamy standard in this fic. XD
