Great line from Mr. Neyer:

Sometimes it’s disheartening to think about Boras wasting his talents as an agent, when he could instead be working for the State Department, convincing poor countries to sign distinctly unfavorable trade agreements that would make my sneakers cheaper.

I never pass up an opportunity to share an Ichiro-related link.  This was an interview done last month with Kyodo News.

Met Canadian Hall of Famer, former Chicago Cubs great Fergie Jenkins today and got a :hipheart: shout out lol

he was in town promoting Black History Month and was gonna be at the Oilers - Canadiens game, got a baseball card signed for 10 bucks but all proceeds go to charity. Real nice guy but there was barely anyone there, at the main post office cuz he got his own stamp

^^ Just signed up as Uramiya, :) 4 teams so far, settings look good, I like a lot of categories. I live in the Eastern time zone, any time between 3 pm and 11 pm is fine with me for draft times.

I completely forgot about this story: Junior Griffey attempted suicide in the late 80s, when he was already in pro ball!

Ichiro donates 100 million yen to relief efforts in Japan

Ichiro

Ichiro donates 100 million yen to relief efforts in Japan
By 'Duk

Ichiro Suzuki(notes) still hasn't offered any public comment about the ongoing crisis in Japan, but the message he sent on Friday will certainly go a lot further than any press conference remarks or a prepared statement of concern ever would.

The Seattle Mariners great will donate 100 million yen to the relief efforts stemming from last week's earthquake and tsunami. Using today's conversion rate, the amount equates to about $1.23 million — or roughly 7 percent of the $18 million he'll make playing baseball in Seattle this year.
In usual Ichiro fashion, he hasn't said anything about his impressive support with his checkbook and he likely won't. Helping out his homeland in a time of great need seems to be enough for the right fielder — as it was last month, when he quietly donated 10 million yen to relief efforts following the volcano eruption in the Miyazaki Prefecture.

His gesture reminds me of the 2001-02 NBA season, when Michael Jordan donated his entire $1 million salary to Sept. 11 efforts. And just like in that great time of need, Ichiro isn't alone in his generosity. The Mariners also announced on Friday that they'll be matching any front office or fan donations made over the regular-season's first game homestand at Safeco Field with a minimum of $100,000 guaranteed. The San Francisco Giants also announced their plans to offer aid earlier this week.

BASEBALL IS BACK!! Who is your World Series favorite? Man, gotta say the Yankees ain't the same with out Pettitte but I think Jeter gonna bounce back. BOSTON LOADED UP DAMN. I'm a root for the Rays, Man Ram and Damon at it again.

And Manny has retired to avoid another suspension from MLB's Drug Treatment and Prevention people. And nobody will care because he's silly and likeable as opposed to the Bonds/Clemens/ARods of the world.

Friday action!
« Reply #1637 on: April 08, 2011, 11:34:13 PM »
Well, if "Raffy" can hold down ten percent of the HOF vote, why not Manny?  And I guess the NFL had better step things up with its drug-prevention programs.  All of them.

And how come Will Clark fell off the HOF ballot so damn quickly?

And I guess John Lackey just knows how to "win," right?

And baseball season is the best of them all...

Because BBWAA voters are smarmy, crotchety old men who pretend that anyone who retired before 1985 was a golden God of purity and saintliness who should be revered one step down from Jesus.

Well, a middling defensive 1B with those numbers is certainly Hall of Fame-ish (moreso than some of the guys who at least hang on to the ballot), but I'm not really sure he belongs in. Certainly not as long as the likes of EMart/Trammell/Larkin/etc are sitting out the outskirts (maybe in a weaker field, if he had more public support he'd make a solid Veteran's candidate). When you're that blah outside of your hitting you'd better either be really an amazing hitter or at least have some big years. He got robbed of an MVP in 89 (and was right there in 88), but beyond that *shrug*. 8000 PA guys can (and should) get in as pure hitters, but they need to be really good. He essentially looks like a less interesting E-Mart (with a positional disadvantage while E-Mart was a decent 3B and then obviously an edge once he was a DH).

Well, Will The Thrill came to mind after I thought of Raffy P.  I remember he swore on live teevee during a locker room celebration.  Gotta love that.  Not a slam-dunk choice but certainly one that shouldn't have gone kaput after one round of voting (ala Albert Belle).

And yes, Murray Chass actually FLAUNTS his BBWAA HOF vote.  They'll all be dead and gone, one day.

BTW more than one person online hasn't completely absolved Nick Swisher just yet.  David Schoenfield of ESPN.com noted that Swisher kicked at Nishioka's leg.
