A Lesson From the Past Chapter 8 12/10
« on: November 21, 2011, 10:35:50 AM »
I never felt more weird than what will happen with this fic, unfortunately it will be short and have very similar effects with other writings associated with death.  Thank you for reading! :jphip:

Chapter 1

“Kanon, wake up!”  The first sound of the day always annoyed Zukki.

Especially the loud screech of her sister, Reina, who had been her guardian since their parents died a year ago, it was an annoying event of the early morning.  Zukki rolled out and dragged herself over to the table where Reina would leave her breakfast before leaving for work.  Ever since that day, both sisters grew apart with Reina becoming the breadwinner for both of them.

“Zukki~ you look so cute when you wake up.”  Reina’s friend, Sayu admired Kanon to the point of dreadful irritation.

“Sayu!  We gotta leave, Zukki will be fine.  Go to school and stop calling me at work.”  Reina waived before leaving her in the kitchen alone with toast and eggs.

The young woman looked up and saw the hands barely past seven o clock; she took a deep breath before looking at the dull food on her plate.  It was constant routine of hers that she would never see Reina until dinner time and lunch was more of a struggle with the limited resources within the house.  She picked up the toast from her plate and walked to the refrigerator to find nothing from the night before that she could use.

“Reina hasn’t been stocking up lately.”  She said out to the room with no response coming streaming back.

She took a couple more bites before throwing it into the trash and changed into her school uniform with the limited time she had left in the empty house.  Zukki was lucky to have the school’s tuition paid for when her parents passed away.  However, it left them in a hole for normal day to day living and she just willed herself through the chaos of home life.

When the clock hit seven thirty, she left the house to go off to school.  It was a couple blocks from the house and with the traffic limited in the area, it was convenient to leave later than usual but to avoid the crowds, she would leave early.  The neighborhood was warm after her parents’ death but with the rumors of her older sister, Zukki felt outcasted from the children who once knew her.  She walked by quickly avoiding the eye contact of the neighbors as they would bore into her.

Although, she had one ally who would shield her from all the bad looks and it was her cousin Risa, who knew that Reina was supporting her with the basic necessities.  Risa would escort her over to the school before leaving for her work in the business district.  However, she also had some rumors about her because of negative practices with the owners and the establishment of a big cooperation in town sponsored by her employer.  Risa always kept Zukki with Reina becoming stressed over finances and would try to give her lunch once in a while.

“Kanon-chan, is Reina okay?”  Risa called over the girl from across the street.

“She seems fine; Sayu took her to work today.”  She replied as Risa shook her head and ran across the street to meet with Zukki.

“I have lunch, please take it.  Food is important for your education and if Reina doesn’t care for you, I will help as much as possible.”  Zukki bowed slightly and walked to the gates of the school.

Zukki was constantly assaulted by her classmates because of the special privileges put on her because of her parents’ death and the donation given to them with their picture posted in the faculty room.  They called her “spoiled” with the faculty praising her on a constant level without any consideration to the others.  Every day it was the same thing with the shoving and the name calling that they pulled her away on occasions to protect her from her peers.

Unfortunately, the faculty was unhappy with her special treatment that they had once locked her in a classroom until the janitor realized she was in trapped.  She spent her time avoiding everyone as much as possible even avoiding classes to stop the bullying.  However, the administration barred the students from harming her but it felt like she caged and the constant abuse would continue despite no reports from her.

“Hey… you are here too early; you have to wait until entering the school grounds.”  The older woman shoo her off the property and was locked from entering.

Zukki waited outside until the first few students came and started to push her around in a circle as she held her bag close to her.  It was minutes of pure torture until an adult would pull her away and take her inside to the lab room.  As usual she just sat there and cried until the school bell rings for the first class, but it seemed different with a person in the room writing on the chalkboard.

“Excuse me, who are you?”  Zukki asked the unidentified woman.

“I am the new teacher, Abe Natsumi; I have been relegated to the lab room to teach chemistry.”  She smiled as she dropped the chalk onto the shelf.

“Oh, nice to meet you.”  Zukki bowed as the teacher smiled back.

“You seem too young for me but I can hope to see you next year, maybe?”  Zukki nodded as the teacher walked out of the room.

Zukki walk toward the front of the room and looked up at the picture she drew on the board.  It was complex hexagons that were beyond her knowledge but written below was the common name and the scientific name of each compound.  She turned to find a flame on and she walked toward it with caution.

“Why is this on?”  She question to herself as she turned the corner to find a person dressed in black.

“WHO ARE YOU?”  Zukki asked as she saw the person dove into the window.

She looked down to find a piece of cloth left by the person and she grabbed it to find something scribbled on it:

I love you

Before she could analyze the cloth more, she fainted to the floor and woke up to the same room.

“Where am I?”  She questioned to herself as the same cloth was in her hand and the image of outside was similar to what she saw before blacking out.

She got up from the floor and leaned her body onto the table with the burner still on but the chalkboard was empty.  She began to hear noise from outside and ran into the closet where they kept lab coats and hide out until she figured what was happening.  Unfortunately, she began to think that she was not in the same time period any more.

Chapter 2

Zukki felt the knocking at the door as the students passed by and she held her breath hoping no one would open it.  Right when she felt the door creek, an alarm went off, and everyone rushed out.  She opened to see the empty room.  However, the door caused one student to be stopped as she fell backwards to the floor.

“Who would open the door during a fire alarm?”  She rubbed her head as Zukki lend her hand.

“Sorry… I was just hiding out.”   Zukki apologized to her.

“Don’t stand there, we gotta go outside.”  She grabbed Zukki’s hand and took her to the tree away from the population.

Zukki glanced around to see it was definitely different from what she imagined the school.  The tree was much smaller and rusted poles that were removed years ago were still standing.  The girl who took her out of the building hid behind the tree until the bell stopped ringing.

“What are you doing?”  Zukki asked as the girl scratched into the tree.

“I’m trying to avoid the crowd, what do you think I am doing?”  Zukki pulled her away while she pulled back in resistance.

“School is very important; you should go back to class.”  Zukki struggled to pull her away but slipped and tumbled onto the ground.

“How would you know?  You were in the closet.”  She stood over the young woman as the eyes peered into her.

“I… I’m not sure where I am.”  Zukki replied.

“This is Terada Academy; you must be a student here, so you can go to class.”  She sharpened her eyes as Zukki tugged her back toward the school causing both to fall to the ground.

“You are a persistent girl, so I will go back on the condition that you meet me upstairs.”  Zukki knew that she had no reason to go to class so she sneaked her way up with the other girl to the top of the school.

The two were the only students up on the roof and with classes in session; they wouldn’t be bothered as long as no one knew about them.  Zukki took a seat next to the stairs as the other girl stood near the edge.

“By the way, can you tell me the date?”  Zukki asked with the other girl showing her frustration.

“It is June 7th, 2001.”  She said in irritation.

Zukki looked down and she figured that she went back ten years from the slip.  What made it worst was she was with a person she didn’t knew on the roof of the school she attends.  She figured that it was mid-morning and her stomach started to growl from the lack of food in her.  Zukki took a deep breath and walked toward the unknown girl.

“I am Suzuki Kanon, I am a sophomore.”  The other girl smirked as she lazily bowed towards her.

“I am Sayashi Riho, I am the same grade as you.”  Kanon bowed back as Riho turned away.

“Why are you so cold towards people?”  Zukki asked as she held her hand by her stomach.

“No one really likes me here; they all know that I am a product of the school faculty.  My parents lead the performing arts program and they always star me in any productions over the others who are more talented than me.”  Riho explained as she sat near the edge of the retaining wall.

“Well you should be happy you have parents, mines died a year ago in an accident.  I live with my sister who loves to go out a lot.  She doesn’t save a lot because she thinks that I am a burden for her but inside I think she doesn’t want to let go her life.”  Riho cracked a smile.

“I wish I didn’t have my parents…”  Zukki rushed up and looked her into her eyes.

“Parents care about us, without them we cannot discover discipline or other life stories.”  Zukki explained with her idealistic thoughts.

“Geez, you really liked your parents.”  She shot back as she brushed Zukki’s hands away.

“Wait, just hear me out.  I want to see you dance.”  Kanon requested with Riho rolling up her eyes and standing in front of her.

Riho breathed deeply before breaking out into dance and Zukki watched as her moves were crisp and her concentration was on Zukki the whole time.  She took control of the area for a few minutes before pausing into her next set.  Then, she exploded out of her poses and ended with a flip inches away from Zukki.

“You happy?”  Riho visibly upset as she received applause.

“That was really good, your parents have to be proud to have you as a child.”  Riho withdrew herself from the question with her back towards the younger girl.

“They are happy but I am stressed in having practice every day without a break.  If they understood that one day I would be a star without them, I could be able to concentrate but with them, it is a struggle to win over their consent.”  Riho confided to Zukki as they both sat next to each other.

“Maybe, you should try out in being an idol; they make good money to live on.”  Zukki tried to cheer Riho up but it was hopeless.

“Well they won’t let me try because they see them as stupid and with school becoming harder, I gave up on that dream a while back.”  The older girl stood back up and looked toward the sky above her.

“You should keep that dream open, parents may not like it at first but I think they would be willing to try it out before letting you go on your own.”  Zukki felt her own body boost in being positive but Riho was still saddened.

“One day, when I finally pull them away from me.  They want me to be better but I think they may be holding me back from failure.”  Riho shook her head as the bell rang for the next class.

“I guess I’ll be going, good luck in your next class.”  Riho waived as Zukki tried to devise a plan to escape and hide out for the time being.

so Zukki has gone back ten years, to Riho's time in school, I wonder why Zukki was sent back though, for her sake? for Riho's? or perhaps for both of them.....

@oddy everyone has their moments and the time warp will be an interesting story

Chapter 3

Zukki patiently waited for the bell to ring before making her move down the staircase, she hid opposite of the door looking out at the scenery.  After a few moments of remembering the area, she saw the ladder which led to the ground floor.  She climbed over and slowly stepped down only to notice the window filled with students.

She slipped and landed on top of an unsuspecting student.  Zukki rolled off and picked her up from the ground.  The student was slightly dazed and walked over to the bench holding her head with her two hands.

“Why were you using the ladder?  Are you skipping out of school?”  She asked as Zukki noticed a trail of blood running down her face.

“No, I was visiting someone here and there were yankiis up on the roof and I didn’t want to be involved with their business.”  She explained with a lie.

“I see… they are quite a nuisance and cause trouble to everyone, by the way, I am Takahashi Ai.”  She took a bow and saw the blood on her hand.

“I think you need to go to the nurse’s office.”  Zukki suggested.

“Yes, I should, I hope I see you around.”  Ai ran off to the nurse’s office opposite to where Zukki remembered the nurse’s office to be.

Zukki walked off the campus and the name started to rattle around in her brain.  Her appearance didn’t match to she remembered seeing until she reached in her pocket and saw the picture of her favorite idol.  She started to walk to the nearby park to let her excitement stream out of her.  Her excitement caught the attention of an elderly couple who were relaxing with the birds.

“Excuse me; you seem excited for a young girl who should be in school.”  The elder woman grinned at her.

“Sorry, I am not from her, my school has a week off for vacation.”  Zukki bowed to them as they both smiled at her.

“I see… well you enjoy your vacation and continue your studies.”  She nodded to them and walked back onto the street.

Zukki was amazed by the town, it was slightly different with the stores and the people were more energized from her time.  She decided to check out a sweets shop for something to eat, it was an opportunity to get some food while Riho was in school.  She took the last bit of money and laid it on the counter.

“Ah, you are new here in town?”  The woman asked behind the counter as she counted the pieces of candy on the counter.

“Yeah… I am visiting here for a bit.”  Zukki replied.

“How nice, well your total is 200 yen.”  Zukki pulled out her coins and push it towards her.

Zukki watched the woman count the coins with the sweets still scattered.  It was laborious for any person to do so but it was the only money she had on her.  When she finished counting the coins, Zukki went on her way and hanged out in the park.

It was pleasant with the early day sun but the winds made the girl chilly and she had to fold her arms to keep herself warm for the time being.  Then, out of the corner of her eye, she saw Riho walking along the street.  She was holding her bag with no person bothering her as she walked to the sweets store.  Zukki followed her from a distance and inched up closer to seek why she is out of class.

Then, she saw a man pass by her and entered into the sweets shop.  Zukki came even closer and a peeked inside to find the man paying for her.  She turned back and hid behind the wall as Riho turned to where she was and greeted her.

“ZUKKI!  What are you doing here?”  She screeched as the girl dragged her to the back of the store.

“I couldn’t find my class so I came out here to get something to eat.”  Zukki explained.

“Sigh.  You are going to be a bad influence for other people you know.”  Yashii grabbed the first bun and bit into it.

“Well why are you out here?”  She returned the question back as the other girl chewed her food.

“The principal offered to buy because of my parents but I don’t care for him, he is the worst of my supporters.”  She explained as she grabbed her water jug from her bag to assist in swallowing her food.

“I see… I also met Takahashi.”  Riho paused as she felt a sudden pain in her chest.

“She is nice, I have been her friend for a while but my parents think she may be out to take my position for the plays.”  Zukki smiled at her comment.

“I guess she is your rival.”  Riho nodded.

“Yeah, but I don’t see her like that.  She has been a hard worker and always seems to have an edge no one can compare to.  However…”  Riho tied up her bag and closed her hand into a fist.

Riho began tearing up as she tried to fight something that been bothering her.  Zukki walked her even further back to the alley, trying to calm her down to explain their relationship.

“She has a friend who is really close to her; she is an admirer who always supports her when she gets rejected.  I never felt low in life when she stares like I did something wrong.  For how much I apologize, she holds Ai close and it kills me to say the truth as she would never believe me.”  Riho leaned onto Zukki as her tears started to flow out quickly.

“Riho, I understand how you feel; I have been neglected lately from all my troubles.  I want to be broken away from my own life.”  Riho looked up and ran her hand over Zukki’s hair.

“You are really cool, no one has ever held me so warmly.  My parents never lend me support over failures.  Can you hold me for a while longer?”  Riho smiled as her partner wiped away her tears.

“Sure.”  Zukki began to wonder who the person is being Ai’s friend.

“Can you tell me who is Ai’s friend?”  Zukki let Riho scoot in closer.

“Niigaki Risa.”  Her mind just went blank as her cousin was Riho’s rival’s friend.

Hmm, So Risa is Ai's freind who is nice to her  I wonder what will happen when 'past' Risa meets Zukii?  :panic:

@oddy the better question is how will it affect the relationship when she gets shipped back to the future? :nervous

Chapter 4

Zukki stared at the sky with the knowledge of her cousin ten years ago was Riho’s rival friend.  She was her outlet for any problem with Reina.  She was very understanding and always comforted Zukki as a sister.  Now, the fact of looking at her made her uneasy but the warm feeling of a friend who she could relate to was seemingly important than looking at a younger Risa.

Riho stretched out onto the wall as she began to wonder about the time.  She looked up and saw the sun heading toward the afternoon.  She grabbed Zukki’s hand and looked toward the sky.

“Friends rarely come to help you and since you have been here, all I have been wondering is why I only met you now?  Where did you originally come from?  And will you be here… forever.”  Riho gleamed as she found a treasure but Zukki could only tear up knowing she is lost in another time period.

“I have the same questions but it can be answered later, I want to watch you perform.”  Riho’s smile disappeared and it showed the bits of disappointment of her self-esteem.

“Ai will also be there to practice her lines, I admit she does it better, and whisper it to her all the time.  Even in defeat, she holds a smile and congratulates me.  I could never do it the way she does it and at least once I would want to have that feeling of defeat to show my poise.  You convinced me, let’s go to auditorium.”  The duo walked back onto the school grounds as they saw Ai with a bandage around her head from the fall.

As they got closer a spunky girl walled them off and slanted her eyes toward them as she was a bodyguard.  Zukki waived as Ai returned it quickly behind the girl’s back and the smile quickly was wiped off as soon as they entered the room.  Riho peeked from behind the curtains to see her parents on the table looking over the notes.

“I guess we should be starting soon, take a seat in the audience.”  Riho grinned as Zukki ran down the stairs and found an open seat in the back.

As she tried to sit in the chair, a man came in with a black suit passing all the students without recognition and sat right next to Zukki in the nearly empty auditorium.  She turned to the man and saw he had a slip of cloth with words written on it.  Zukki froze as the man laid the cloth on her lap and escorted her to the nearest door.

“Suzuki Kanon, such a nice name.”  He said with a smile as she held onto the cloth with her fist closed.

“Who are you?”  She asked as he opened her fist.

“I’m Ken, I am a time traveler supervisor, and I manage all the people who mistakenly walk into a time portal by accident.  It is my responsibility to keep time the same as it always was before, I have to avoid the tangents from happening.”  He explained.

“Okay… So why didn’t you come when I tripped into the time portal?”  Zukki questioned him as he took out his book.

“Time is fragile and noticing a mistake is longer than solving the mistake.  I feel a certain fear in you and it is okay to feel that way in a foreign place.  So, I will assist you back to the time portal when the time is needed.  Unless, you would decide to do it now.”  Ken saw Zukki’s attention toward the auditorium.

“I see, well the time limit is a week and I will force you back regardless of the result, unfortunately it may last shorter than expected.”  Ken started to rub his chin as Zukki was anticipating an answer.

“What do you mean?  I will be here less than a week.  I want to be here forever, no one will ever look at me the same.”  Zukki’s voice started to squeak as she felt happy since before the accident.

“Well we can’t do that, I am required to watch you as long as you stay in this time frame.  No matter where you go, I will be there to guide you through the world.  If you do need assistance, just show the cloth out in a private place, and I will be there as fast as I can.”  He patted Zukki’s head as they went back inside.

She managed to catch the middle part of Ai’s performance and she displayed her crisp moves and the look of determination caught the judges’ attention.  Zukki watched the performance like she was watching a live concert and she was impressed that Ai had raw talent before she became a star.

Riho walked on the stage and heard the cheer come from Zukki as Riho smiled to the judges.  She held herself like a champion and worked through every move and sang in perfect pitch and harmony matching Ai’s talent.  It felt like a title fight between them two and each had a special jab, hook, and roundhouse compared to their impeccable defense maneuvers.  Riho fell to the ground as the performances were both marvelous.

“Do you want to guess who won?”  Ken asked.

“It is a tie between them two, they both did a great job.”  Zukki replied.

“I know… reason it will go to Riho, the judges were always set to Riho and always triumph over Ai.  As for Risa, she was Ai’s understudy and she always cheered for Ai regardless if the other person was better.  However, the situation was Ai is not rich and would always be behind Riho because of the bias and as you know students get special treatment.”  Riho nodded.

“I feel bad for Ai because she works super hard for her fans and her politeness made her a national idol.”  Ken nodded.

“This performance was the turning point in her career, Ai made it personal that she will defeat Riho at all costs.  However, she was weak in sabotaging any act that got in her way, which caught the eye of a producer before her big break.”  Zukki knew the history of Takahashi Ai and it was imprinted in her head like a book.

“Can I at least greet her for now?”  Ken nodded.

“I am off to another assignment and I’ll be waiting for your call.”  Ken disappeared in a flash.

Zukki walked up to the stage and hid behind the curtains like Risa who was observing her from the back.  The judges were quick to consult and made it quick to make Riho the winner for the star position.  Riho ran backstage with beads of sweat running down with tears of joy rolling down her face.  Ai followed her after into the arms of Risa.

“Congrads… you win another one because of your parents, good for you.  People with money have all the power making the poor look silly.”  Risa’s enraged face said everything about the process.

“I’m sorry, I want to earn it once rather than be prosecuted for the bias.”  Riho explained as Ai and Risa walked the other way.

Riho couldn’t hold back her smile but inside it was stabbing her in the heart that Ai had outperformed her in all stages.  Her parents pulled her away from Zukki and scolded her for slacking off on practicing her routine.  Yashii kept calm as the pounding continued until the parents revealed their disgusted faces toward Zukki.

“She didn’t do anything.”  Riho said softly.

“Fine.  We will meet for dinner after we clean up and your friend is invited to stay because she is a good luck charm.”  Her father smirked before walking onto the stage.

“Let’s go to the yakiniku place, my parents may take a while.”  Riho grabbed Zukki and kissed her on the cheek.

“Thank you for the support!”  Zukki was happy about Riho but the message by Ken was threatening their relationship.

@oddy Torturing might be a good thing to do until then

Chapter 5

Zukki decided to walk over to the yakiniku place by the sweets shop, it was quite homey, and the place was filled to capacity.  She turned around and leaned onto the window waiting for Riho to come to the restaurant.

“Hey, are you waiting for Riho?”  Ai gleamed as she took the space next to her.

“Yeah… sorry to hear that you never got the part.”  Ai tilted her head down.

“It’s okay.  It’s nice to see Riho has a friend.”  Zukki snapped her head back up.

“What do you mean?”  Ai placed her hand on Zukki’s shoulder.

“Her parents are controlling her every step of the way.  They both were famous idols in their own right and they always wanted Riho to become a star.  However, the problem is recognition from all the agencies, so they tried to get her all the lead parts in school.”  Ai explained with her hands into her pockets.

“Don’t they send out scouts?”  Ai nodded.

“The scouts are looking for more polished talent, it’s the reason why I am at the school, and the headmaster calls the scouts to come here when we have productions or competitions.”  Zukki decided to go inside to wait for Riho and brought Ai in to explain at little more of the story.

“The challenge is to succeed the next star, like Goto Maki, she worked through everything here to become the next rising star.  I admired her spirit and personality throughout the camp before she left to work on her skills.”  Ai smiled as she tried to warm up her hands.

“I see, you work hard to earn your spot.  I feel awful that they can’t let you and her go through.”  Zukki expressed her disappointment.

“Thanks for your sentiment.  I have to go prepare for the open search.”  Ai waived good bye as Riho entered the restaurant.

“Ai-chan is always positive despite losing, she never tears into other people, and that’s why Risa is by her side.”  Riho smiled as we both had a booth in the corner.

Zukki couldn’t rattle out the image of Risa holding Ai; it was haunting her that her cousin was once by the side of Ai.  Riho ordered a platter of meat for two people and turned on the burner to cook the charcoal.  She shifted the grill over the coals and we waited for the meat to come our way.

“What about your parents?”  Zukki asked.

“They will not come; it seems weird that they encouraged me to not have peers as friends.  It ruins the competition between everyone else, or that’s what they said.”  Riho grinned for a second before going back to a serious expression.

“Ai-chan mentioned that and she seems happy that you have me as a fan to cheer you on.”  Riho turned her head away.

“Ai… knows what friendship is like, she worked hard to rid of all her downfalls, and that is what I want myself to be.  I don’t want to be lonely but I come off as a lone wolf because of my parents.”  Riho’s eyes started to slowly water as she sat next to her.

Zukki knew that feeling all too well, it was debilitating for any person who they think they developed an advantage but it only created a divide for them to only see the truth.  Riho leaned on Zukki for a bit as they both watched the heat lighten up the grill.  The sensation was awkward for both as the distance was shrinking until Riho looked up at the younger girl’s face.  Yashii held Zukki’s face in her hands and pressed her lips upon Zukki’s.

Zukki stopped thinking for that moment, it was confusion, happiness, and fright all combined into that kiss.  Riho pulled back and looked to hold onto Zukki’s hand with the meat platter served to their table.  It was at that moment Zukki felt that chill roll down her back, it wasn’t going to end in a nice way.

It's sweet of Ai to realise the problems that Riho has and to understand what pain she must go through....

Riho leaned on Zukki for a bit as they both watched the heat lighten up the grill.  The sensation was awkward for both as the distance was shrinking until Riho looked up at the younger girl’s face.  Yashii held Zukki’s face in her hands and pressed her lips upon Zukki’s.

this, this would be awesome...... IF I DIDN'T KNOW THAT ZUKKI WOULD BE RETURNING TO HER OWN TIME SOON!

@oddy very soon indeed although I have other ideas in mind for some other stuff.

Chapter 6

Zukki tried to hold her smile while Riho kept eating her meat but something kept bothering her and she excused herself from the table.  She paced over to the door where Ken was reading a newspaper.

“Hmm, nice weather we are having today.” He said out loud with Zukki taking a seat next to him.

“Do you want to leave right now?”  Ken asked as Zukki kept her tears from running.

“No… I can’t leave her now.”  Zukki whimpered.

“Fine with me.  I will force you to leave tomorrow.”  Ken folded up the newspaper and left it onto the table.

“Why tomorrow?  I thought I had a week.”  Zukki’s voice raised as Ken scooted closer to her.

“I thought so too but I noticed the tangent after you started to meet Ai.  That event will change the timeline, so tomorrow.”  Zukki nodded hesitantly.

“I understand.”

Zukki stared outside for a moment with the eerie feeling of being in an unfamiliar time.  The restaurant was getting colder by the second and her stomach was growling from hunger.  She walked back to seat next to Riho and slowly put the charred pieces of meat into her mouth.

“What’s wrong?”  Riho flashed a smile to bring up Zukki’s spirits.

“Nothing, it’s just the weather.”  Riho stuck her head out and saw the rain outside.

“Hmm, I guess we can stay here until my parents come.”  Riho put another piece of meat into her mouth.

She turned to the entrance to see Riho’s parents walk toward their table.  Zukki sunk down while Riho put the last piece from the plate onto the grill and her parents looked toward her.

“Riho, you don’t deserve this after today’s performance.”  Her dad glared at her as she passed the last piece over to Zukki.

“Dad… why do you force me to perform if I am worse than Ai-chan?”  Her mother dragged her out of the stall.

“She isn’t better than you, you are making her better than you, and we know you could do better.”  She explained and Riho ran out of the restaurant.

Zukki ran out after her and followed her into the alley where they met before.  Riho leaned onto the wall and started to bang the wall with all her might as her frustrations became evident.  She took a seat next to her to calm down Riho.  Zukki knew with her heart that anymore would change the timeline to a much worst situation.

“Kanon-chan, please be honest.  Am I better than Ai-chan?”  Zukki looked at the raindrops before looking back at Riho.

“I’m not sure.”  Riho lifted her off her seat and slapped her across the face.

“AM I OR NOT?????”  Riho yelled out as Zukki held her up.

“She is really good but don’t discount yourself.  You have talent that the headmaster believes in you so that should give you enough to do what you can.”  Riho let out a whimper before hugging her.

They stood there what they though was for an eternity and the rain soaked through both of their clothes.  Zukki closed her eyes as she let her tears fall, from the corner Riho’s parents came and separated them.  Zukki felt someone pull her away and waived Riho goodbye.

Zukki turned to find Ken pulling her to an apartment building.  She was taken up to the third floor to a plain walled room.

“I have a change of clothes.”  Ken tossed her the clothes and pushed her into the bathroom.

“Ken, is it possible to tell me why tomorrow I have to leave?”  Zukki asked as she saw a hole covered with wire mesh.

“Riho got invited to a talent contest in Tokyo, so she won’t see you when you leave.”  Ken explained while she got the last piece of dry clothing onto her.

“I see.  Well, is there anything else I should do before I leave?”  Ken looked around and nodded.

“I shouldn’t tell you this, but I will wake you up in the morning so you can see her off.”  Ken smiled as Zukki looked at the futon on the floor.

“Is that against the rules of time travel?”  Zukki asked curiously.

“Yes it is, but I remembered a while back when I did my first travel.  I met someone who I loved dearly and for two months we did everything together until…”  Zukki lay on her stomach.

“Until?”  Ken smiled.

“She died at home from a disease I had contracted.  It was incurable at the time but it wasn’t a few years later that the vaccine was created.”  Ken poured himself a glass of whiskey and tossed some ice into before taking a sip.

“Oh, is this situation the same as yours?”  Ken nodded.

“Nah, I accidently sent out a time portal at the time you saw that piece of cloth, Abe-sensei was the original target.”  Ken drank the rest as Zukki began to piece the puzzle.

“Abe-sensei was…”  Ken nodded.

“She was the person who I fell in love with.  Her gentle demeanor with her sense of humor made me attracted to her.  You helped me by not making that mistake one more time, as it is illegal to visit the same person twice in the past.  Although, I cannot say why you must leave tomorrow after Riho leaves but if you must know what happens after, you will see a sign.”  Ken closed his eyes and the lights went off in the room.

“Be prepared for tomorrow.”  Ken pulled the blanket on top of Zukki before leaving the room.

I wonder though, I kinda want to see what happens to Riho if Zukki goes back and they meet, or what happens if Zukki finds this sign that ken spoke about.....

@oddy The last chapter will bring it altogether

Chapter 7

Ken went into the hallway with drink in hand and saw a woman go by him.  It reminded him of his love down to the birthmark on her neck.  She turned back and smiled while he took a sip, she came closer to him to hand off her number.  He walked over to the window to look out at the city.

“Ken-san, ohisashiburi.”  He looked back and saw a ghost of a woman.

“Natsumi-chan, konban wa.”  He greeted back.

He admired her beauty even in ghost form, it was the main point in attracting to her, but when she fell ill, he tried to do everything but it was too late.  However, his emotions were balled up with the alcohol and closed his eyes.

“Cry, Ken.  I know you miss me.  It wasn’t your fault that I had passed away.”  She smiled at him.

“I can’t.  You meant so much that I had forgotten my duty as a monitor and now I look at my mission.  Everyone falls in love.  It’s like a curse brought on by my superiors and they laugh every time I have them.”  Natsumi floated over to him.

“Love is special, its one in a great while that two can fit together perfectly.  The one you have now, she’s been tortured for so long that she found that person who believed in her as she believed in Riho.”  Another ghost popped up by Natsumi’s side.

“Ken-san arigatou.”  She bowed towards him.

“Ghosts’ memories can’t be erased, that is the unfortunate part.  Riho will remember Zukki in the afterlife and until she leaves the mortal world, they can co-exist again.”  Nacchi explained with her hand on the girl’s shoulder.

“I remember that lesson, although I can’t die because my life is sealed with this job.  So, the misery continues for an eternity.”  Natsumi smiled.

“True, well get your sleep and let her see Riho off.”  The two ghosts disappeared and he walked back into the room with the windows wide open.

Ken guzzled down the last bit of the intoxicating liquor and closed his eyes.  The next moment he woke up to the alarm he set in his mind.  He looked over at the bed to see no one there and he saw Zukki with her clothes in hand ready to see Riho off.

“Let’s go.”  He said in a soft voice and walked over to the apartment.

It was lucky that Ken lived near the apartment and he sat on the bench behind a bush.  Zukki ran over to embrace Riho for the last time.  Riho couldn’t hold her smile as she began to tear up in front of Kanon.

“I am lucky to have you as a friend, even for this short period.”  Riho mumbled out in tears.

“Same here.  I want you to succeed where ever you go.”  Zukki gave her final good bye as Riho jumped into the car with her parents waiving by to the young girl.

Zukki walked back with an eerie feeling in her stomach.  The nauseous feeling was crawling up and she paused to take a breath.  Ken saw the two girls walking towards her and he knew that she had to get out quickly.  He took out an emergency smoke bomb and hurled it behind them to distract them for the time being.  Ken grabbed Zukki and ran over to the alleyway where Zukki and Riho saw with each other.

“Zukki, I want to thank you for making me remember that a relationship grows over time.”  Ken smiled and opened a portal for her to enter in.

“Thank you for letting me understand true friendship.”  Zukki jumped in and the white space transported her back to her own time with no memory of what happened.

This final chapter answers the questions, well onto other stuff :thumbsup

Chapter 8

“Wake up, Kanon!”  Reina yelled with Sayu trying to restrain the kitty from strangling her sister.

“Reina… is that you?”  Zukki woke up still dazed from the transport back.

“Yes, I heard you fell in class so I rushed over.”  Abe-sensei was in the back looking over the two in front of her.

Zukki sat up feeling exhausted from lying down for an extended period of time that she went back lying down on the bed.  She looked over beyond the teacher and saw Risa holding her hands together like she was praying.  Risa opened her eyes to see Zukki was in good shape and felt relieved that her cousin was well.

Still feeling dazed, Zukki slowly turned over to her side to see the flowers lined up by her bedside with all the well wishes of her peers.  She smiled as she was finally known for once beyond her parents but the cloth was hanging off one of them.  That was her last memory before hitting the floor hard.

“Reina, how long was I unconscious?”  The kitty brought up three fingers.

“Three days, you were knocked out to the point that only your brain was active.”  Reina explained.

“I saw you fall to the ground and immediately brought you to the infirmary, where they sent you to a hospital.”  Abe-sensei added.

Risa walked over to the bouquet with the cloth wrapped around it and saw the message.  She started to giggle as Zukki wondered over the reason.  Risa lend her the cloth and she held it tight as she shed a tear.

“I don’t know why I am crying for, but it means so much to me that I have people caring for me.”  As Zukki placed the cloth down, in came a brown-haired lady who was familiar to Zukki’s eyes.

“My biggest fan injured and I finally come back home.”  She announced with Risa beginning to swell up in surprise.

“Ai-chan!”  Risa came running towards her and hugged her as tight as she could.

“Risa, I missed you so much since we last met.  I have a lot of things to show you and I need to do one thing before I leave, so I have a whole day to catch up.  First, I want to give you a DVD set for my biggest fan.”  Ai handed over a present-wrapped box over to Zukki.

“Thanks, Ms, Takahashi.”  Ai smiled rubbing the girl’s head.

“Call me Ai-chan, Risa has been a great friend since I started and as a close family member I want you to be my friend too.”  Ai looked over at Reina and Sayu as they were hiding their faces away from her.

“Accidents happen a lot, don’t feel bad that you weren’t there to save her, because I regret some things but living with it on your mind will ruin it.  We shall all go to commemorate a person who thought me courage and led me to my career.”  Ai led the group out with Zukki slowly following behind with cloth in hand.

Ai walked up to a tombstone with three names on it and grabbed the flowers from her bodyguard to lie on their grave.  Ai tilted her head in prayer with everyone else following until Zukki came up to pray.

“She died at my age.”  ZUkki noted.

“Yeah, she was one to challenge me to do my best even though Risa hated her.”  Risa smiled.

“True, but when she passed away.  I was hurt that she wasn’t going to be here to perform against Ai.  Riho was by herself most of the time and everyone hated her parents because she was being forced into roles that she didn’t like a lot.”  Risa explained.

“Risa-chan, I never knew you hated someone.”  Zukki saw Risa nod her head.

“She was getting all the roles and Ai was second fiddle to her.  Even the day she left, I thought she was going to come back and make Ai-chan look horrible.”  Risa tilted her head forward.

After a moment, the cloth began to escape from Zukki’s hand and it stuck onto the grave.  The group looked at the grave like it was a miracle that it had landed on there.  Kanon began to think about Riho and the question popped into her head.

“How did she die?”  Ai rubbed her chin and stared at the grave.

“Car accident.  Everyone died after a storm caused a tree to block off their path and drove into a ditch.  News reports mentioned that she held a piece of cloth in her hand like it was a final wish to someone who knew her.”  Ai began to giggle.

“Kanon-chan, Riho would have fallen in love with you I think.  She always had a hard shell that many couldn’t break through but you seem kind enough to make her appreciate you.”  The idol took the group away from the grave leaving Zukki behind.

She sat there with the thought that if she had met her that it would be her to be a friend that could maybe become a closer companion.  However, it wasn’t meant to be but the three ghosts appeared behind her looking at the grave too.

“Riho hug her.”  Her mother said.

The ghost embraced her for a bit before the light came and took them away.  It was the final time she would come over to see the grave.  However, Zukki never forgot that Ai-chan had become famous because of a rival who never fit into the mold of being a star.
