BoA Plans Debut in UShttp://www.koreatimes.co.kr/www/news/special/2008/09/178_30413.html
After achieving phenomenal success in Asia, Korea's biggest pop star BoA is setting her sights on the world's biggest music market ― the United States. S.M. Entertainment said BoA is preparing to make her debut in the U.S., Yonhap News reported Tuesday. Her management agency said BoA has been shuttling between the U.S., Japan and Korea in preparation for her American debut.
BoA is scheduled to hold a press conference detailing her plans for the U.S. on Sept. 10 at the Imperial Palace Hotel, Seoul. S.M. used BoA's initials to coin the slogan `` Best of Asia, Bring on America,'' which is said to reflect the singer's ultimate goal of making it in the highly competitive American music industry.
S.M., a top Korean entertainment company, recently announced the establishment of S.M. Entertainment USA. The company is expected to expand SM's business in the U.S., which may include promotions for its stars like BoA and TVXQ. BoA is the latest in a string of Korean pop stars who are trying to make it big in the U.S. Rain and Se7en have reportedly been preparing for their debut in the U.S. for the past year, but neither have released an English-language album.
BoA, whose real name is Kwon Boa, was only 11 years old when she was discovered by S.M. Entertainment. At 13, she released her debut album, which was an instant hit in 2000. In 2002, she made her debut in Japan with the album ``Listen to My Heart." BoA has concentrated most of her activities in Japan, releasing six Japanese albums, which have all topped the Oricon weekly charts.

SM Entertainment held a press conference today at Seoul’s Imperial Palace Hotel which was named “Best of Asia, Bring on America” as BoA plans to enter the American market was revealed to the media and fans. (the cast was because she had injured her arm yesterday while rehearsing)
BoA’s American debut song is officially titled “Eat You Up”. It will be a powerful dance track and was produced by Bloodshy & Avant. Flo-Rida, a rapper who was extremely successful the American billboard charts with “Low” will be featuring with a rap remix. A documentary about BoA’s American activities, “Eat You Up”, “Look Who’s Tailing” MV teasers was officially shown during the press conference. There will also be two versions of BoA’s “Eat You Up” music video.
BoA debut single for the American market “Eat You Up” will be released online as a digital single on 14th October and subsequently as a single album on 11th November in America. The full “Eat You Up” MV will be out on 7th October. BoA is also planning to release her full-length english album in early 2009.
BoA said confidently during the press conference: I will prepare myself just like what I did when I entered the Japanese market as a rookie singer. I will strive to achieve the best and give it my best shot.
If they really wanted to break in, shoulda tried to get Lil wayne or T.I., as those would have been sure hits[...]QFT. Seriously... Flo Rida. Not that i mind applebutts, but wtf. XD Weezy should def do it. I mean he's everywhere on everyone's tracks. Sure he could help BoA out.
Oh yeah, could you upload the mp3 too, please? TIA. :)
Weezy needs to knock Flo-Rida out and steal this track from him if he knew what was good for him. :P
Since I'm kinda pumped about this song. (instead of snsd's "new' song...)
SM clarifies confusions on the two music videos.on a side note, notice that on www.boaamerica.com that they took the "us' verison down. and Asian verison is now the "A" version. So it seems like they are going to use the asian version. and yeah even the most hardcore BoA fans agree that music video was a piece of garbage.
SM states, "We did not decide to make an Asia version and an U.S. version for 'Eat You Up' in the first place. We just labeled them as 'A' and 'B' version to begin with. We have been monitoring the internet user's responses on YouTube and other sites. We are planning to use both versions in the promotions."
BoA's first 'Eat You Up' performance!
BoA will perform her debut song 'Eat You Up' broadcasting live in front of the world's stage. The world's largest video site, YouTube, is hosting a global live event called 'YouTube Live.' 'YouTube Live' will be a large-scale special event showing performances from San Francisco's Fort Mason Center and in Tokyo's Shinkiba Studio Coast. It will take place on November 22nd at 5 pm PST, and 8 pm EST.
A SM representative said that BoA will give a powerful performance and will gather the world's internet users attention. Along with performing 'Eat You Up', BoA will take part in the opening stage as the MC, connecting San Franciso's stage with Tokyo's.

Just seems to me that the asian one is marketed towards young teens (shit blowing up..etc), whereas the US version is marketed towards adults (more sexy)..Your view of sexy and what's for adults is weird. Coz I would say it's the absolute opposite. The awful styling and the choreography, not to talk about the embarrassing CG backround at parts of the U.S version is without doubt done poorly and the MV is only playing on the fact that it shows some skin. Youngins love skin. Whereas the Asian version actually is well made, with constancy throughout the whole video. Has great choreography and the pace fits perfectly to the bangin' song, and then there's the waterish part at the end.
lol I finally got to see her. BoA was hot. Great dancing. Too bad she took off before I could tell her I got the love bug.
Here's video tenkei took.
It would probably affect her US album sales if US fans get the Japanese version instead of the US version. Those sales numbers are the main reason major artists even sell cd's. So if you're worried about her success in the US you should probably buy the US version. Or you could buy it off itunes or something if you buy the Japanese version. There was discussion of this... but I'm sure that on American soil, they'll be selling the American CD for sure. If they sell the second Best Of, hopefully the store was smart enough and included the intended product for sale. The only thing is, I hope they're smart enough to tell the difference and label it as it is so no confusion for the customer. But for me, it won't matter- I see BoA on the shelves, it's mine.

I'm glad that it's just a wig. Dammit, that's one uglyass wig. Very Yoochun-ish. XDLOL to be honest, I prefer this wig over Yoochun's weird hairstyles. Seriously, for the past few months... I want to give him a wig.
Well I think, if you're going by it vocally and lyrically, the dancing doesn't exactly fit. But it still fits perfectly well musically. It may be intricate, but it's still smooth and executed well. [...] My first impressions of this dance was that it was very Michael Jackson-ish without being explicit Michael Jackson choreography. [...] Oh and I just figured out a perfect ad campaign for BoA in the US. The female Asian Chris Brown! :lol:Hmm, you've got a point. It does fit the music (beat) now that I think about it. But I think it would fit it even better if there was a bit more bass and drums to it, don't you think?
Okay I think I officially love BoA... HahahaSrsly.. Nobody is gon' blame you shirenoona. I think it's inevitable to eventually admit that BoA is the most awesomest artist and dancer ever. And she's hot and smart and everything on top of that. *sigh*
Omg i just noticed she picks her back up and turns herself around.
And wtf... she's living here!? I need to find out the places she goes so I can "accidentally" bump into her. >_>How did you not know that?! She's been living in L.A. for like... sigh T_T
I'm trying to figure out what the beginning reminds me of...Michael Jackson? Actually I'm listening just with laptop now so I can't hear all the sounds...
I knew about it before, but didn't really care, but since BoA's now on it... I gotta get other people to go with me! :lol:I'm gonna try and go ;_;
For those of you who don't speak Korean, "Sori" literally means noise. And well, BoA's brother Kwon Soonwook is doing exactly that, by directing the MV for upcoming artist, "Sori." Might I add that BoA's brother is a lucky sonnuvahbiatch. Being able to not only look at this masterpiece, but also film it and keep it for his archives, for those oh-so-lonely late nights is just priceless. I guess those cheeseballs "Air Supply," said it best, "Even the nights are better, now that we're here together."credit: johnny oppa @AKP
Anyway, getting back on track, Sori's upcoming single is entitled "Real Lips (입술이 정말)," from her debut album "Lips." Now that's clever, but what I want to know is, which ones are the real lips? Well, I guess I'll just have to wait for when the MV air's on the 19th.

I was pretty disappointed... I love all three artists, but VERBAL totally failed on the rhyme, CK and BoA are good on the vocals, as expected, but the song just doesn't come together for me... I can see it maybe growing on me thoughAgreed. The song is a bit weird but I did like the singing. I've always liked BoA's vocals live than in studio....there's a clear difference about it.
at least they were having fun during the perf though lol

At the age of 22, BoA Kwon has already overwhelmed the Asian music industry, claiming top charts in Korea and six consecutive number-one albums on the Oricon charts of Japan. Though there are a few who are skeptical of BoA’s entry into the American market this year, don’t let her small size fool you. She’s been training to become an international superstar since the age of 11 from dancing and vocals to mastering Korean, Japanese, Chinese, and English. BoA has been in the music industry since her debut at the age of 13 in 2001 with SM Entertainment. Her first American single, “Eat You Up” was performed on MTViggy in New York, and a handful of lucky fans have been able to hear “Look Who’s Talking,” at the recent KIIS FM Jingle Ball concert. BoA is certainly crossing boundaries as one of the first female, Asian artists to come over into the American music industry, bringing along her renowned hip hop skills and vocal performances. Though BoA has just finished a performance in Korea and a new Japanese video for her single “Eien,” she’s graciously put time aside to answer a few questions about herself and her recent debut in America.
Angela Koh: What are some of the name brands that you are wearing right now?
BoA Kwon: Right now, I would say my favorite designers are Balenciaga, Neil
Barrett, and Helmut Lang. If you've seen some of my performances in the
states or even music video, "Eat You Up", I've worn a few pieces by
them!
AK: If you could only listen to three songs for the rest of your life,
what would they be?
BoA: For the rest of my life?! Well right now, I love my new single "I Did It
For Love" and another song I enjoy is "Change".
AK: If you weren't a singer/artist what would you be?
BoA: I honestly can't imagine my life any other way. I love what I do!
AK: Who is your hero?
BoA: Michael Jackson! He has totally been my hero since I was young.
AK: Where do you see yourself ten years from now?
BoA: I see myself continuing my career. I'm really inspired by Madonna. I
think it's amazing that she's still going strong with her career as an
entertainer.
AK: You've described yourself as shy, but you're highly recognized for
your great charisma and confidence during a performance. How do you
change as you appear on stage?
BoA: I started performing at a really young age, so I can just transform
myself for the stage, it's almost like turning a switch! I really get
pumped up by my audience too and I just have a lot of fun while I'm on
stage.
AK: How would you describe the image and sound of BoA you are bringing
into the U.S.?
BoA: Fresh and funky! My upcoming album has a lot of new sounds - club music
you can dance to and really high energy beats.
AK: You've just performed in Korea and are now working on an album in
Japan after you debuted in America. How do you keep your energy up and
driven amongst all the hard work and traveling you've been doing since
you were thirteen years old?
BoA: Like I said before, I love my job! I really feel like music and
performing give me the energy and drive to keep pushing myself.
AK: One of the things you're best known for is your extraordinary dancing
ability. What style of dancing do you have a preference for and how
often do you to practice in the studio?
BoA: Dancing is such major part of my life. I would describe my dancing style
as hip hop for the most part, but I'm always open to learning new stuff.
When I'm rehearsing for music videos or performances, I'll be in the
studio all day. When I'm not on schedule, I like go out from time to
time and see if I can catch some new moves at the clubs.
AK: What makes you different from many previous Asian artists that have
been working towards crossing over into the American music industry?
What are the advantages you have and what new things do you bring to the
table?
BoA: I've been working really hard to release an amazing album - working with
so many talented people, and at the same time, I'm taking my time and
enjoying myself while I'm here. I've made a goal to become a pioneer for
other artists who have dreams of crossing over, and I want to be the one
who can pave the way for them.

(http://img3.imageshack.us/img3/6942/garrettboagx8.jpg)Korean pop star BoA gets a boost of hitmaking power from Sean Garrett on her new single, “I Did It For Love.” The song will appear on her self-titled U.S. debut album, set for worldwide release on March 17. BoA shot a video with director Joseph Kahn (Pussycat Dolls, Britney Spears) last week in Los Angeles.

In its website, they play 3:08 min "I did it for love". Does it mean full song?leather :whip:
I ran into one of BoA's dancers from the "I Did it For Love" video, Knicole Haggins, at my dance studio today. I overheard her say "BoA" while talking with her friends (one of her friends was like, "Who?", lol), so I approached her about it afterward. I asked her if she danced for BoA, she said yeah, I asked if it was for "I Did it For Love," and she was like, "Yeah, how'd you know?" I told her I was a big fan of BoA and have been following her U.S. debut closely. I talked with her for a bit about BoA and the shoot, and here are some details she gave me:OMG I'm so jealous  then there's the AKP contests for BoA. OMG!!!! T_T
------------------------------
- The shoot happened roughly three weeks ago. The dancers rehearsed with BoA for a week and filmed the video over the course of a day or two. BoA then headed to Japan after the video shoot.
- The video is a pure dance video and has lots of heavy dancing. It's also got a dark color scheme, and BoA was dressed in black leather. She also showed me a picture of a charcoal/silver (?) sports car that's featured in the video.
- I asked her if Misha Gabriel choreographed it. She said Nick Bass actually did the choreography, but that Nick reminds her of Misha (in appearance?).
- I asked her if BoA was nice. She said that she was, and she mentioned that BoA was very "professional" and worked as hard as the other dancers. She contrasted this with the experience that some of her friends are having while rehearsing for Britney's upcoming tour (Britney gets fed up and walks out a lot). I asked her if she thought BoA was a good dancer for a singer, and she said she was amazing and a quick learner.
- I asked about Sean Garrett, and she said that he was there. She said he was a nice guy and surprisingly quiet/shy. During the shoot, she asked him if the car was his, and he laughed it off with an "I wish!"
------------------------------
We talked for a bit more, and I mentioned to her that BoA is HUGE in Asia. She was like, "Yeah, I heard! That's awesome!" Her other friend (an Asian guy) was like, "See, I told you! She's like the Britney or Janet of Asia!" I then mentioned to her that BoA is performing at Kollaboration this Saturday, and she didn't know about but expressed interest in going (also 'cause three ABDC crews are gonna be there). I also brought up BoA's CD release/listening party next weekend, and she was like, "I should call up her management so they can hook me up!" My class was starting, so I told her I had to go and would look for her in the video. She told me that she looked different in the video and had curly/puffy hair in it. And that was that.
Anyway, it was cool to run into someone who only knows BoA on a professional level and isn't a fan. She only had good things to say about BoA, so it's good to know that BoA is at the very least a true professional and not a diva with her dancers. Maybe I'll see Knicole this weekend at Kollaboration.
I don't mind the club songs as long as it has some R&B in it.Yes. Most definitely. However, this last one "addicted" or whatever, wasn't really my thing. Not this time, nor the first time I heard it. Then of course it's impossible to tell how good the final product will be without any song on top. Now the whole american sound is still kinda fresh for her and in my opinion she's welcome to do that for a while longer.

Big in Japan just isn’t big enough for at least two Asian singers in 2009. Hikaru Utada (pictured) and Boa, two of Tokyo’s top-selling artists, are releasing English language CDs this month in an attempt to win over American pop and R&B fans.
For decades, Japanese music managers and American record labels have tried to crack the lucrative stateside market with top-selling artists, including Seiko Matsuda in the 1980s and Toshi Kubota in the 1990s. Each time, the endeavor invariably fails; last year, Universal didn’t even bother releasing an English-language record from one if its rising R&B stars, Ai, despite the fact that the singer was born in L.A., is fluent in English and can belt like Beyoncé.
While Boa and Utada are certainly not the first artists to dream of “making it” in the West, Utada’s “This Is the One” and Boa’s “The First Album” represent a potential watershed moment for Asian pop stars in America: Both offerings arguably surpass previous crossover attempts from the land of the rising sun.
Los Angeles-based record producer Joey Carbone, who has worked in Japan with singers such as Yuki Koyanagi and Crystal Kay, stated in an e-mail that "both records are good...Boa is a great dancer and a good singer. Utada is a very good singer and a great songwriter."
Kun Gao, CEO of San Francisco-based anime-centric website Crunchyroll.com, agrees that both are a cut above the usual Japanese exports.
“Both Boa and Utada are very popular, not only with world-wide audiences but also have extremely loyal and rapidly growing U.S. fans,” he said.
But the performers have their work cut out for them. “When Japanese and Korean singers have tried to have a hit in the U.S.," Carbone said, "they have changed their look and sound to try to appeal to the U.S. market, and it hasn't come across as real."
Boa and Utata are stars in Japan and beyond -- Boa is actually Korean and maintains a good-sized fan base in her native country, although her career is more prosperous in Tokyo, where she currently lives. Utada has sold more than 50 million records in Japan, and it looks as if “This Is the One” is yet another hit; she currently has the second top-selling download in Japan, according to iTunes, for her the first single, "Come Back to Me," off her all-English disc, which debuts here digitally March 24 (and physically May 12).
But winning over hearts in the Heartland won’t be easy for Utada; mainstream U.S. pop fans who listen to Top 40 radio stations such as KIIS-FM (102.7) are typically reluctant to embrace foreign stars they aren't used to seeing on Perezhilton.com or in the pages of Us Weekly, with notable English and Canadian exceptions.
However, Utada sees herself as more American than Japanese.
“I grew up in New York,” she said from Island Records’ Manhattan office earlier this week. “In Japan, I’m seen as a bit of a foreigner, but in America, I get comments like ‘Your English is so good.’ So in both places I’m a bit of an outsider, but I think that comes out in my music, and everyone feels like an outsider on some level. If people can connect with me there, that would be great.”
Although Utada’s been down this road before with another English language release aimed at U.S. listeners (2004’s “Exodus,” which sold fewer than 60,000 copies, according to Soundscan), this time the bilingual multi-instrumentalist seems to have found her true voice with a more focused effort.
Tracks such as “Merry Christmas Mister Lawrence (FYI)” overflow with confidence, hooks and hip-hop-inspired beats. The first single off the 10-song set, the piano-driven, vaguely Alicia Keys-esque “Come Back to Me,” only hints at the riches buried throughout the offering, which Tricky and the sought-after production duo Stargate produced. “Apple and Cinnamon” sounds like a cross between Kate Bush and a Prince outtake from “Around the World in a Day." And “Dirty Desire” might sound good in a club played between Lady Gaga and an old Vanity 6 tune. Almost the entire record is highly listenable, with risky but rewarding twists.
But, alas, Utada has a weak spot, and it might be her lyrics. Take, for example, “Dirty Desire.” While Utada claims the verses are tongue-in-cheek, it’s not clear that lyrics such as “And in my fantasies/I love you long time/Doing my nine to five/I'm thinking six and nine/I gotta make you mine” are ironic.
“My lyrics have a distinct feel and I don’t take myself too seriously,” she said. And what about her evoking perhaps the most odious sexual stereotype of Asian women, the “love you long time” phrase that crept into the urban vernacular after 2 Live Crew sampled a memorable scene from Stanley Kubrick’s “Full Metal Jacket”?
“I’m not easily offended, because I find humor in everything,” she said. “It’s not that different from a rapper saying, ‘Love you long time.’ I just happen to be an Asian girl. I can’t be afraid of what people think when I write.”
Utada has little to fear from her female fans, who may actually appreciate the racy content and the more thoughtful lyrics sprinkled throughout “This Is the One.” She's also won over at least one important male fan in the U.S., a potential advocate who could prove crucial to her success at radio.
“I was pleasantly surprised with Utada,” KBKS-FM music director Eric Tyler said from Seattle on Wednesday after hosting her in-studio. " 'Come Back to Me' makes me raise an eyebrow."
In contrast to Utada’s radio blitz spearheaded by Island Records (apparently, L.A. Reid is a fan and wants to break Utada urgently this year), Boa is taking her music directly to the streets and clubs of America. The South Korea-born singer, who released her debut English disc Tuesday, is hitting Los Angeles and Las Vegas hard in support of “First.”
“In America, Asian society is really big," the heavily accented singer said earlier this month at her L.A. showcase. "They have supported me a lot.” The trilingual singer may not have the backing of a major U.S. label, but she may end up the bigger star in the long run, thanks to infectious dance floor stompers such as “Eat You Up” that should make Britney Spears jealous. The tune was, in fact, cooked up in Copenhagen by Danish songwriters Remee and Thomas Troelsen and fine-tuned at Bloodshy & Avant's studio in Stockholm, where Spears’ vocals have flowed through monitors many a time.
But Boa will need more than Britney-style beats and Asian American fans if she hopes to ever break outside of Asia. At her showcase, a representative from Snoop Dogg’s team was talking with Boa’s representatives, apparently interested in a collaboration (nothing has been confirmed yet, both camps say). Boa will certainly need a high-profile collaboration to make a splash in the States, despite a stellar record full of potential hit songs, including a duet with Sean Garrett, "I Did It for Love".
But even with Garrett, Snoop Dogg, Justin Timberlake or some other champion on her side, Boa may go only so far. “I believe that Boa has a better chance of selling in the U.S. [long term], but I do not think she will ultimately be very successful," Carbone said. "The field of female solo artists doing that exact same type of track is so saturated, there's no room for someone like Boa, a virtual unknown in the U.S. It's just too difficult for her to distinguish herself against everyone else that do similar tracks.”
Regardless, count on Boa and Utada to keep trying well into the next decade. The U.S. just might be big enough to find room for both in its collective pop-music heart.

BoA is doing a duet with popular American singer Akon, it has been announced. She is featured on a song on the album "Freedom+2," which Akon is releasing in Japan next month. "Freedom+2" contains songs from Akon's third album "Freedom" that was released last year in the U.S. The song "Beautiful" from that album was originally done with Kardinall Offishall and Colby O'Donis, but Akon decided to make a new version with a female artist from Asia for the upcoming album. Akon decided to offer the collaboration to BoA, who just made her American debut with an album in March. "Freedom+2" goes on sale on August 5. On the same day, "Beautiful" will be made available for chaku-uta download as well.

BoA returns with ‘best’ record yet
(http://i.imgbox.com/abufHrw2.jpg)
By Kwaak Je-yup
BoA, one of K-pop’s bestselling solo artists, has returned with her seventh Korean studio album, “Only One.”
The 25-year-old star says it is her best work to date, from which she draws the most satisfaction.
“They’re my songs but to be honest, there are some that I skip, too,” she said, referring to her previous material, in a roundtable interview Tuesday. “In this album, there’s really none of that. I love every track.”
Having made her solo debut at the tender age of 13 after two years training at SM Entertainment, the country’s foremost idol factory, the singer has achieved unrivalled success across several countries with millions of records sold.
Now a dozen years on, less people buy actual CDs and music industry executives around the world are scrambling for their next viable business model but BoA seems blissfully ignorant of the general trends of pop music today or even her own career milestones ridden with superlatives.
“I don’t know what’s going on in the Oricon chart (Japan’s equivalent of Billboard). Who’s doing well these days?”
Instead she chose to speak as much as possible about her new tracks, most of them a departure from the sleek, fast-paced and beat-heavy dance music she has become synonymous with. When her lead single, a mid-tempo break-up song called “Only One”, was released last week, pundits and fans were taken by surprise.
“I wanted to do music that puts the vocals up front… relaxing my shoulders a bit. Everyone around me (her creative team) helped me create that kind of laid-back feel.”
Her last public appearance was on SBS’s wildly popular talent show “K-pop Star,” where she served as judge alongside music business moguls and hit-makers Yang Hyun-suk and Park Jin-young. Her next single “The Shadow” drew inspiration from that experience, she said.
“When you work for several years, you really get used to everything. When I sat there at the show, I thought about how I must have felt back then, really at the beginning of my career. I’ve been so focused on what is here and now… but I used to be one of them (the contestants).”
Turning 26 in a few months, she is still young enough to be a pop idol, but in this hyper-productive high-turnover world of K-pop, she constantly faces the risk of being too familiar. But she has overcome all the pressures of being a star.
“I still want to be an idol. I like it when they call me that. My position is a little bit in between; I’m neither an idol nor an artist. But I want to keep being there because it frees me from any preconceptions about musical styles. I don’t have to worry about it… I am comfortable with this ambiguity of genres.”
According to her brother Kwon Soon-hwon, also a musician, the singer has grown up substantially in her music-making: “I’ve seen her play around with the keyboard since the beginning of her career. Back then, she didn’t know exactly what she was doing, I suspected. I heard the melodies for Only One a while ago, and next thing I know it’s the lead single for her album. She is becoming an artist. I’m certain of that.”
Leaning against a comfy couch in a black top, gray leopard-print jeans and matching gray jewel-studded high-top sneakers, she looked weary. She said she had just two hours of sleep the night before, following a marathon taping of her first return performance.
So what keeps her going at this rate even after all these years?
“It may be a rather one-dimensional answer: I can keep doing this because I love it,” she said. “As soon as you start thinking it’s work, you’d hate it. In music, trends change and new things keep coming out. Creating something out of nothing is hard, of course. But there is so much satisfaction out of this hardship, and it makes it really an addictive kind of job.”

Army shorts are so nice! Only BoA can pull them off so well. ^_^
Did anyone else get her giant size mini photo album?
^ No difference, only time. Well, Boa does look kinda different, but I guess it's just because she's matured? I still like her and always will. I'm really liking her newer music. It's really REALLY good.
I'm addicted to this song.
