Download Chillometry (a collection of my favorite chill songs)
« on: October 09, 2013, 08:09:08 AM »
I made a mixtape for my friend and thought it would be a waste to just have it downloaded once, so I am offering it to you guys. I will also include the commentary I wrote for my friend, if you are interested in that type of stuff. I will include the download links here, and my commentary in quotes.

I will just generally give my thoughts for the composition of this mixtape. (I actually went back like halfway through writing this email and deleted my uploads to go back and add a batman track I really wanted, also added an intro + outro and a mother 3 song) To appreciate the cover art you have to look at the 800x800 pic, as the small pic loses the  subtle details. Its custom made by me of course.

So first off new links

Long read and you might only be interested after you find songs that you like. But under hear I just provide a bit of commentary for each song.

Well I was tasked with making a chill out mixtape, so my kneejerk reaction was video games bgm and other japanese music, but it slowly morphed into a quite diverse offering as you will see when you listen. I have things from all over the world and in different languages, not only will this be an experiment in chill. It also will be an experiment in diversity genre-wise for you.

I tried to (key word tried) to arrange the somgs from most upbeat to most chilled, I think I should of tweaked the order a bit more, but all in all I'm satisfied. It in general goes from percussion to non percussion to almost ambient music. Even if the degrees within those sections are off, the general flow is there.

0. The intro is shermie talking on the phone while dining with yashiro.

1. So we start out with the rapper Curren$y. He almost exclusively makes music to smoke to, as most of his lyrics involve smoking in some way or form. So we have a rap song to start us off (Rap-America)

2. Then we have some neo-jazz-pop-unit-thingie called the bird and the bee. They are from cali and have a beautiful sound, especiall on their first album and the vocalist is a mean dresser. (Jazzy-pop America)

3. Then we have our first VGM. This is an arranged version of demetri's theme from vampire savior (darkstalkers 3). Darkstalkers has some great music, and this improves upon that great music, I love this piece. ( VGM-Japan)

4. Here we have the opening theme to the OVA of record of lodoss war. It's absolutely beautiful, watch it, it really goes to show that the 90's was the best time for anime... in almost all aspects. Anyways, great song from a great anime. (Anime-Japan)

5. This is from the brothel scene in house of the flying daggers. It is absolutely breathtaking as were most of the scenes in the big 3 (this, crouching tiger, and hero). Just a random note, but this song really goes to show some of the more finer details of the chinese art beauty ideals. The dance zhang is doing is quite difficult and focuses more on control and disipline as forms of artistic expression. The sleeves flow smoothly and gracefully, and that is a direct relection of her doing the dance right. (Cinema - China)

6. So this has ryuichi sakamoto on the piano in a album he did with tom jobim's cellist and the cellist's wife on vocal. Their collaboration is literally some of my favorite music of all time. Most of their music is in brazilian portugese, but this one has english, so I thought you might enjoy the romantic imagery. (bossa nova - Japan / Brazil)

7. Here is a song from the french film 8 women. I watched it and it was okay, but the soundtrack stuck with me enough to hunt it down. Added mostly because of the french lyrics. (Soundtrack - France)

8. Here is a rare type of song, a slow cha cha sonng. I love latin jazz dance music, salsa, cha cha, mambo, etc... and this song is no exception. Its so great to dance to, slow and measured steps... its perfect. Anyways please enjoy one of the more positive, lasting, and prominent products of the trans-atlantic slave trade (with european instruments, spanish language, and african rhythms) (Cha Cha - Cuba)

9. Secret of evermore composed by jeremy soule FIN. (VGM - America)

10. This was one one of my fav songs on cowboy bebop's soundtrack. Its jazz piano (played by yoko kanno no doubt) and sung in one of the north african accents of arabic (most likely morrocian). Youtube comment quote, "The story of a man whose life became more complicated than he could bear". (Jazz - Japan)

11. Sadly the onslaught of stuff produced by yoko kanno is nowhere near its end. So here we have maaya sakamoto singing this great song. (Jpop - Japan)

12. So fairuz is like one of the most recognizeable names in the arabic music world (kicking myself for not adding any songs in  hindi....). In her  later life she started making very jazz pieces and this is one of them. She is one of those people with like 50+ legit albums (lol maybe not that much). (Jazz - Lebanon)

13. Batman the animated series had its sound created by shirely walker, she is mega genius and this is just a very very small sample of her greatness. She conducted the orchestra for danny elfman in the 90's batman movie and if you remember the movie theme and the animated series' theme were quite similar. They tried very hard to go with the serious mood set by the movie to influence the animated series. (Soundtrack - America)

14. Erik Satie's Gymnopédie No. 1, which I am sad to admit, I first took notice of on the mother 3 soundtrack. Although of course this is not that version, this version came with a like 10 buck 99 essential classical music download from amazon. (Classical - France)

15. Ah sweet jaspects. They are like teetering on the line between neo-soul and jazz. This song is my favorite by them. A beautiful song about love, my favorite topic. (Neo Soul - America)

16. Bond James Bond , my favorite misogynist playboy. This is from the scene in from russia with love he falls in lust with the bond girl and decides he will do her a favor and lay the pipe if she acts right. (Soundtrack - United Kingdom)

17. Another yoko kanno piece... this is from the escalfowne movie (with maaya sakamoto voicing the lead and the outro is from the escaflowne drama cd).Not only is the song beautiful, but the dance is beautiful as well. I can not express my love for this franchise and the people who made it. (Anime - Japan)

18. Gotdamn luxons always did have nice music and a pretty faction color even if they were salty bastards. Jeremy Soule again... (VGM - America)

19. Sade.... a halfu with english and african blood in her. She is an english artist and set the world ablaze in the 90's with love deluxe a near perfect album. Even thought sade is her name sade was the name of the band that played with her, they did straight smooth jazz, just wonderful stuff. Its all chill like this on that album. (Smooth Jazz - United Kingdom)

20. David Wise, have greater mortals roamed this earth? Was an in-house musician for rare an english game development company that did little known games like goldeneye, donkey kong country, and battletoads. Anywho its dkc babeh... what more is there to say? (VGM - United Kingdom)

21. Okay so my absolute favorite song in my favorite scene of one of my favorite movies. Dolls. Have I fanboyed to you about this movie? I am sorry if I haven't. It was directed by "beat takeshi" and is a provocative look into extreme love. I highly recommend it... It is the equivalent of cinematography porn. Its just beautiful, everything about it is beautiful. (Soundtrack - Japan)

22. When I was trying to learn about vectors for programming, I ran into this video. I liked it so much I searched and searched for the video but could find no info, cause I wanted all the music, cause I knew it was good. I had to settle for ripping the audio from the youtube video :( oh well. (Instructional - America)

23. One of many many many touching scenes in mother 3 (that games story is just so emotional... please play it, its a shortish rpg too). This is in a meadow of sunflowers and has you meeting someone who died and they talk to you... touching my friend. (VGM - Japan)

24. The wii menus and channels have AMAZING music. They are just too good. Anyways, this is the news channel just being awesome, but if you explore the wii channels enough you will find music you like. Casual gaming, hardcore bgm! (VGM - Japan)

25. Maaya Sakamoto just contemplating... as I bid you good day, hope you are chilled.
