(CNN) -- Heath Ledger won best supporting actor for his performance as the Joker in "The Dark Knight."
His family accepted the award for the actor, who died in January 2008.
Penelope Cruz won the first Oscar of the night at the 81st annual Academy Awards, a best supporting actress honor for "Vicky Cristina Barcelona." Cruz paid tribute to writer-director Woody Allen, who oversaw "Vicky Cristina," and writer-director Pedro Almodovar, who gave her some of her best roles, and thanked "everyone who has helped me from the beginning."
"Slumdog Millionaire" got on the board early, with screenwriter Simon Beaufoy winning best adapted screenplay. The filim also won the Oscar for cinematography. "Slumdog," which has dominated this awards season, is considered the favorite to win best picture.

I like it that the family didn't make the speech super dramatic/tragic, but instead said they wanted to celebrate his achievements or sth like that... I think the makers of the Oscars had hoped for lots of drama (I mean wtf was up with the ridiculous way of dedicating a little speech to each acting nominee), but I think the family's speech showed good taste, and was touching without going overboard. Not that I expected any less; Heath's family seems to consist of lovely down-to-earth Aussies, based on the articles I've read with their comments etc.
And I'm happy that this Heath & Oscar nomination stuff finally got some closure :lol:
