The French interview is better :

Zidane says sorry for dismissal

Zinedine Zidane has publicly apologised for his sending off in the World Cup final, but claimed he did not regret his actions against Marco Materazzi.

Zidane, who was captaining his country in his final match before retirement, stated that Materazzi insulted his mother and sister in the seconds leading up to the incident, which saw the France midfielder thrust his head into the Italy defender's chest.

"I reacted badly and I would like to apologise for it," Zidane told Canal Plus. "I would like to apologise because a lot of children were watching the match. I do apologise but I don't regret my behaviour because regretting it would mean he was right to say what he said."

He added: "There was no tension with Materazzi before or during the match.

"He just put his hand onto my shirt and I told him to stop. I told him that if he wanted it I could give it to him at the end of the match.

"Then he said very harsh words to me and repeated them several times. I left but then I went back towards him and things went very fast.

"The words he said concerned my mother and sister.

"I heard them once, then twice, and the third time I couldn't control myself. I am a man and some words are harder to hear than actions.

"I would have rather been knocked down than hear that."

i don't think zizou has done anything wrong personally. but of course, his action severely affect the whole frech team as well as the final result of the final.

he still is the best midfiled player around the world. may god bless him after retirement!

I dunno. Losing your temper like that isn't unacceptable regardless of what the guy said. If he had done that off the pitch, he'd have been arrested.

what he did was unacceptable but what materazzi did was also wrong and is becoming a norm in the game, trying to provoke a violent reaction from other players and getting them sent off.. it's harder for the ref to spot this however because it can be done very subtly..

omg someone made a zidane headbutt flash game..

I think that what zidane did was not appropiate because of its consecuences on the game, losing him was too much. But doing it was pretty fine, he deserves respect and if someone talks like that about your mother on the street, what do you do? I'd certainly hit him, I'm not letting anybody disrespect my mother, and Zidane reacted, but as I said, he should've thought about the game...

Interesting that Materrazzi was punished as well. They don't know what he really said, do they? But I guess it's more righterous this way.

:yay: I believe the one who provoked is just as guilty as the one who reacts. So
I guess it's all good in the end.

But I don't think there's a rule against provoking.

If no one knows what Materrazzi said, he can't be judged. Luckily Fifa isn't the real world so they don't have to worry about proof.

Yeah, that's what I thought myself. But I think maybe Materazzi fessed up, or something. They wouldn't give him a fine otherwise..I don't think?

I thought the suspension on Materazzi was just idiotic. If it was Zidane who did the provoking and Materazzi head-butted him, I really doubt the same thing would have applied. Look, I understand why Zidane did the headbutting, I'm fine with that, but somehow people are now praising him for his actions is beyond my comprehension.

provoking players in the final is an act of an coward. Zidane almost scored with the header and he wants Zidane to get sent off. But I think a good way was to walk off the field and not ram into someone's chest
