This is from a show from near the end of the 80s I've been remembering again recently.

The singer (Izumi Igarashi) was the star of the show, but I can't find too much information on her. According to imdb she hasn't appeared on TV since 2001.

八神純子 (Junko Yagami) was one of my favorite three female singers named Junko with their beautiful voice,
and one of her songs パープルタウン (Purple town) was the best for me, which was performed in 1980.

This song could remind you of another song. If so, you are right.
This is said to have been prepared based on Ray Kennedy's "You oughta know by now".
Looks like her boss Yamaha considered back then that Mr. Kennedy was not that familiar among Japanese people
and that this plagiarism would never come out to day.
But Yamaha was wrong. Unfortunately, TOTO's guitarist Steve Lukather performed in the back at this Kennedy's song.
He was and is still today quite famous in Japan. So many of us got to know "Purple town" was a rip-off.
After Mr. Kennedy's lawsuit had been settled, the title of the song パープルタウン had to be accompanied
by another one "You oughta know by now" at any time.
From the Wikipedia in Japanese version:

For your reference you find both songs in the folder:
Purple town (Yagami Junko) & You oughta know by now (Ray Kennedy)← Clike here
She has been married to an american citizen since years living in USA.

I forgot to verify a confirmation e-mail from MediaFire
so you could not download any files I'd uploaded. I'm very sorry.
I believe you can download any files now.

In 1978, a funny compilation album was released called "LET'S ONDO AGAIN" and was intended for parody songs in 1970s.
We got CD players only after 1982, so this is its record cover.

This album includes one parody song for above-mentioned "Smokin' Boogie", which was called 禁煙音頭 (Kin'en Ondo),
"Stop-smokin Dance Song". This song was composed by the same guy, 宇崎竜堂 (Uzaki Ryudou) as "Smokin' Boogie".
He wears his sunglasses on the record jacket above. In 1970s Mr. Uzaki supplied a lot of songs for one of those female idols 山口百恵
together with his wife 阿木耀子. Ms. Yamaguchi is to see on a picture from one of posts by Mr. muppet:

In addition to that this song was sung by 竜ヶ崎宇童, an anagram for 宇崎竜堂, aka 鈴木雅之, the lead vocalist of シャネルズ (ラッツアンドスター).

What a shame. Today, you cannot smoke any cigarettes in Japan, because they are badly contaminated
by radioactivity from those crippled reactors in Fukushima.
You may recognize お座敷小唄 was used as its basso continuo in this song.
This お座敷小唄got most popular even among kids albeit its lyrics when released in 1960s.

In the album "Let's Ondo Again" there was a song with this same title i.e. レッツ音頭アゲイン and another one with the title "Kawara no Ishikawa Goemon"
(河原の石川五右衛門), i.e. "Ishikawa Goemon on the riverside". Ishikawa Goemon was a legendary robber in the 16th. century,
whose name every Japanese knows. It is said that he was executed on the riverside of 鴨川 (Kamogawa river) in Kyoto boiled alive
in the oil bath with his son.

He appears also in a couple of Kabuki theatrical works.
The latter was a parody song for 渚のシンドバット (Nagisa no Shindobatto, in English "Sindibaad on the beach") performed
by that famous female duo singers Pink Lady back in 1977. They became so famous that no one in Japan didn't know who they were at that time.
After over three decades I still remember thire names; the left 根本美鶴代 (Nemoto Mitsuyo) aka ミー (Mie) and the right 増田啓子 (Masuda Keiko) aka ケイ (Kei).

You find these three songs here:

^ 'Pink Lady and Jeff' was a Summer variety series on Television in the U.S. around 1980.
It didn't do very well, although the girls were utterly charming, talented, and beautiful.

The Head of NBC at the time, Fred Silverman, simply tried to cram them into a standard
American variety format, rather than mixing it up with some Japanese style entertainment.

Watch Pink Lady sing with Donny Osmond:

Do they still sing?

They did their "final" concert and retired (for the 4th(?) time) in 2005.
Until 5 minutes ago I thought that was the end, but I just looked on Japanese wikipedia and it says they resumed activity in 2010 and did a tour in 2011.
Sig gone. Tinypic is no more.

BTW Shimon Masato's "Oyoge!" is still the best-selling single in Japan history, right? Man, it's mad unfortunate that he's retired & out of public life.

Hi everyone!
I have discovered this topic by chance. Nice to see there are kayoukyoku and enka fans around there. I am a big big fan of Hiromi Iwasaki so if you want one of her album or single feel free to ask me. I have also a few kayoukyoku stuff that I can share.

Kazuko Matsuo   松尾和子 (1935年5月17日 ~ 1992年9月25日)
& Frank Nagai フランク永井 (1932年3月18日 ~ 2008年10月27日)
in a really nice duet
Performing  東京ナイトクラブ / Tokyo Nightclub, which was a big
hit for them in 1959.

According to Wiki, Nagai san is credited with discovering Matsuo san, and they
often performed duets together.

Sadly Nagai san attempted but failed in a suicide attempt
in 1985 (a lover bore him a child), and causing brain damage,
he no longer could perform.

Matsuo san also had a sad fate- in 1991 her son was found
guilty of drug crimes (stimulants) and jailed- very public criticism
kept her from performing, plus a boutique that she was involved with
went bankrupt, leaving her in debt for millions of yen,
Very distressed, she attempted suicide with pills, but survived.
Her death was caused by a fall down some stairs while at home- her son
still in Prison. Her eldest son, who had been the source of so much trouble, died in
2011, aged 48.

This performance must be in the 70's, and their talent certainly will always be
remembered.

Hi Dan, hi everyone

I just have to say thank you, thank you, thank you (!) for making these
oldies available.  Back in February, after listening to some Peanuts albums,
I started listening to whatever jpop and enka music I could find - and in short
order found this site with your posts.  I've been on a tear ever since.  I haven't
been able to get enough - these Japanese oldies are a new world for me and
there is just so much to explore (and far more than I could afford to shell out).
Dan, I think you are among the few who really attempt to get these tunes out
to the fans.
I love the voice of   都はるみ  does anyone have her albums to share here?

Hello guys,

this is a really awesome thread. So much great music in one place! Thanks a lot to Dan and everyone else who uploaded their own song and album choices because it really is a wonderful treat.
I wanted to ask, is there any chance for these albums to be reuploaded:

Omoide no Melody - Victor Vol.2 - PROPER VERSION
Male Singers - Natsukashi no Original Hit
20 Seiki BEST Kayoukyoku History Vol.1
100 Famous 20th Century Japanese Songs Vol.4 ~Beautiful Memories~
Columbia Original Recording - Showa 10 (1935)

They are all unfortunately dead, but they seemed very interesting. It seems anything hosted on Mega is gone now, so there may be other albums with dead links as well.

If Dan or somebody else could reupload these, I would be very grateful! By the way, is there a thread for Chinese oldies here? I have some CDs that I could contribute, if there is interest. Thanks!
