Well, I can happily announce that my fears about this album have been assuaged after hearing it in its complete form. Not a classic but a an enjoyable enough effort with some nice heavy songs, a few poppier but decent ditties. Worst offender for my money however, by a country mile is Kill The Virgin - just woeful. Not even b-side material by anyone, let alone SCANDAL.

Otherwise a solid outing overall.  ;)

So keeping with the tradition, I figured I'd do a track-by-track review.

1. Queens are trumps (9.5/10)
Wow! I've said before that I'm usually a fan of kicking off a rock album with a real scorcher of an up-tempo track, but I have no complaints about opening with this groovy monster! This really sounds like a B'z song, and that is certainly not a bad thing. The only thing wrong with it is that's it too damn short. Normally I would have wanted a blistering guitar solo in the middle, though I can't fault Mami for not being a world class shredder just yet.

2. 太陽スキャンダラス (9/10)
I've become quite addicted to this track since it was released as a single. The song has such a catchy melody, along with a really fun and playful vibe (which is also accentuated by the music video, although I could have done without all the half-naked dudes in speedos).

3. ピンヒールサーファー (9/10)
The fun continues with this funky little number. I certainly don't mind these kinda tracks when they're as memorable as this. If I were to nitpick, it would be about that last part of the chorus melody being clearly too high for Haruna, but it's no biggie (at least not on the studio version).

4. Rock’n Roll (8/10)
Pretty good and fairly straightforward melodic rock track. As with a lot of their non-single album tracks the production takes a hit, but it's not nearly as bad as some tracks from past albums.

5. ビターチョコレート (7/10)
A little more of a cutesy and mellow track, and it's one of those unremarkable yet still pretty decent tunes. Supposedly Rina composed this one, so props to her and hopefully we'll get to hear more from her in the future.

6. Kill the virgin (:panic:/10)
Oh boy, here we go. It's not that I mind them playing around with different genres, but to take up 5 minutes on an album with this kinda stuff... this is better left for B-sides of a single. Oh well, at least it's miles better than Shoujo M.

7. 声 (7.5/10)
Speaking of which, it's nice to hear Mami doing lead vocals on an entire track that doesn't suck. The song itself is pretty standard fare, but it has a nice indie sound to it.

8. Rising Star (8.5/10)
Turning the tempo up a notch, I really like this one. No frills rock, oozing with energy.

9. Bright (7/10)
Another rather unremarkable track, but the sweet and pleasant melody helps keep the song from being a total filler.

10. Welcome home (8/10)
A previous B-side, but this one certainly deserves a place on the album. Another solid, catchy up-tempo track.

11. HARUKAZE (9/10)
The last of the singles, this one has also had quite some time to grow on me. Basically the «anthem» track of the album. Really good song.

12. Right Here (9/10)
Closing out the album, this track brings back the playfulness of the first 3 songs and leaves me bobbing along with a big smile on my face. Love it!

---

So overall I was quite happy with the fourth album, with only one song that I would rate as a filler track. The album as a whole has a really fun rocking vibe to it, and while it needs a little time before I can rank it properly amongst the other three, I do have a feeling it's gonna be a strong contender for a top spot.

I really love Queens are Trumps. I think this is their second best album after Best Scandal. Can't find a song I didn't like on this thing and yes I loved Kill the Virgin.

The only negative thing I could say about it is I'd rather seen new songs instead of Harukaze, Welcome Home and Taiyou Scandalous. Don't get me wrong, I love those songs too, but I already own them as singles and have heard em to death already. Pin Heel Surfer is relatively new so..

I just got back from the gym after going thru the Queen album in a sweat   XD  Here are some thoughts about some tracks without disecting them thru a microscope:
- Queen are trumps: This track is worthy as a title track. The loud guitar is NICE!  :thumbsup
- Kill the virgin: Eh, I like this track  It has a happy tune and it's mostly a Tomomi's solo, so anything Tomomi is gold to me.
- Koe: Wow, Mami owns this song. Her voice is clear and has a lot of confidence in it. Still a little punk-ish, but her voice clearly show maturity here.
- Right here: another nice track to end the album. Easy to listen to, and I can't get enough of the Haruna-Tomomi combo. Like Azagraph, I bobbed my head with a smile along this track.  :twothumbs

My only complain is the order of the songs a bit forceful. The album starts off strong with "Queen are trumps", then the coming "Taiyou Scandalous" tune just kills the rock vibe. I'd have put Pin heel before Taiyou for a smoother transition. Then Harukaze should be right after Taiyou...

The good thing about not knowing Japanese is I don't have to understand their girly lyric, and pay more attention to the music and the singers' voices. Overall, a pretty good album for car audio in everyday commuting.    :thumbsup

Just listened through the entire album and thought I'd post what I thought about the album, though I won't bother with songs from any of the singles (I'd rather talk more about the new songs) :

Queens are Trumps: :w00t:
Such a great way to kick off the album! The girls doing what they do best and rock out to a really groovy tune, such a simple arrangement to the vocals and the chorus seems to have slightly more Haruna and Mami in them which suits this song perfectly. A true title track 9/10

Rock'n Roll:
Exactly what it says on the tin, though not as dominant or memorable as Queens are Trumps. The arrangement to the song where they have the huge instrumental through the middle of the song gives it another element which makes it slightly more memorable than other songs. 8/10

ビターチョコレート::?
My least favourite song in the album, I have no problems with the slower pace and the mellow beat but it just doesn't seem to have anything the stands out which is part of it's appeal, unfortunately its just a bit too bland. 6.5/10

Kill the Virgin::w00t:
Seems to be the song that's got the most split reactions to it but I gotta say I'm a fan of the song. Tomomi is leading what is quite a cutesy song, though I find myself repeating Haruna's "Are you virign? Kill the virgin." through the entire song which gives quite a nice edge and doesn't make this an "idol" song. I would be perfectly happy if they release a song like this as a single.9/10

声:
The intro makes it sound as if it will be a slightly darker track but they trick me again! This song has a the light rock feel which just feels perfect to listen to as the sun sets and Mami's lyrics certainly seem to suit this sort of indie style and have really improved from previous solo tracks. 8.5/10

Rising Star:
Reverting to the Haruna- Tomomi duo which has worked so well in many tracks and this is no exception. A simple track, nothing new, lots of energy and the SCANDAL we know and love. 8.5/10

Bright:
Hmmm... The slower songs seem to be the missing link in the album, though I suppose "Welcome Home" sort of covers that spot (not really a ballad though), as their real is not much to say about this song.7.5/10

Right Here:
A nice way to close out the album with a upbeat song which should put a smile on everyone's face. Simple, happy, job well done by the girls. 8/10

---

Overall the album has impressed me, a lot. A good mix of "classic SCANDAL" songs and the more experimental new look songs, though I am slightly disappointed that they didn't have a powerful ballad in it, and although singles wise this album may not be the strongest the new songs are serious making me think that this maybe their best album to date.

I just realize that I listened to "Bright" the most often in this album. You know just the way the music arranged and the chorus by Haruna and Tomomi together really put a smile on my face. In fact, their voices blend so well, it's really pleasant to listen to. The closest song to this one in my opinion is "Aitai", not in the melody or genre, but rather the way the song is arranged. I'm looking forward to see them perform this song live, Tomomi's expression is guaranteed priceless.  :thumbsup

SCANDAL did a free show in Yoyogi Park last night.  While it was cool to sort of be near them, I might have been better off watching the live stream because I couldn't see them clearly with all the people that showed up.  Anyway, here's a link (which will disappear soon).

Downloaded it but not sure how safe it might be to upload thanks to Japan's retarded laws.  Sorry.  No idea what Japan is thinking with their attempts to market "cool Japan" but making it impossible for ppl to access their media w/o resorting to "piracy".

I'm with ya! The Haruna-Rina PV is really cheesy. It's like an amateur mashed-up PV with no identity. The Cherry Jam, on the other hand, is very Dobondobondo-like although neither Tomomi or Mami real faces shown once.
