Title: Same Ground Part 5.3 (End of Mayu's Flashback) (semi-hiatus)

Somehow I'm back for another frustrating lame story.
I was debating with myself if I should just make this a one shot story :smhid :smhid :? :? But in the end, I decided to just finish it by chapters since again, I ran out of ideas on how to continue it. So I also need your suggestions :)

Please enjoy it and throw a pie directly at me if it is bad.

Same Ground Part 1

It was raining back then. Just like tonight. I can still remember how you cried and begged me to stay. I end up hurting you. I made you hate me. I was a jerk. I decided to end everything before anything could have started. The others are right. Everything about me is black. I ended up hurting such a young and innocent soul because I’m a coward. I’m so afraid of falling in love again.

My friends are worried about me after my ex-girlfriend and I broke up. I never answered their calls, I never accepted their invitation to go out with them, and I never want to leave my house. That time, I don’t want to trust anyone, again.

Geki, looked what you’ve done to me.
Maybe it was my fault believing you that you’ll never leave me behind. Tell me, when you said that you love me, that you needed me, was it all lies? I devoted myself to be a good girl friend. I did all the things that I can possibly can for you to continue loving me. But I think it was not enough wasn’t it?

I tried to live in the darkness after Geki left me. Those 3 years that we’ve been together were put to waste. She was my first. My first love, first kiss and the very first one to own me. But in the end, she left me for that puppy-looking girl. I can still remember that moment when she dumped me.

“Yuki, I love you and you know that. But please forgive me. Don’t ever think that you didn’t do your best to be a good girl friend to me. It is just that, that, I fell in love with Jurina.” Those are the very words that turned my world upside down.

“Rena, why did you do this to me?” I can only cry as I pounce Geki’s chest.

She never uttered a word. She didn’t release me from her tight hug. She was also crying while accepting all of anger. Why Geki?

That was the last time I saw her. The last time I heard about her, she was already migrating to a different country with her new girl friend. I think she really forgotten me huh? While she’s being happy with her puppy, here I am, living miserably. If I’m not concern of my daily expenses, I would have quit my work as a Systems Engineer. But as they say, you should always be professional. But after that painful break up, I decided not to trust anyone ever again. I secluded myself from the others. If it isn’t related to work, then I’ll just lock myself in my house. That is how the rumors started. The rumors that said I have a black personality. I can no longer smile thanks to her. It never bothered me even if I catch my kouhais talking about me like. I just don’t care anymore. Not until she came and blew everything around me.

“I’m Watanabe Mayu. I’ll be in your care from now on. I’m please to meet you”.

I never thought that your simple introduction will be the start of something I didn’t expect to happen. Truth is, I was carried away by her pure aura. We accidentally met each other’s gaze and you smiled at me. Those eyes, they remind me of someone. Those eyes that are full of life, they remind me of;

“Geki” I muttered to myself.

I left that room before I can make a scene. God, why are doing this to me? Am I a bad person for you to punish me like this? Geki already left me and now, you send me this. After that, I’ve promised myself not to cross paths with you. It may bring trouble for both of us if it happens.

But fate won’t just seem to listen. Of all people I can be paired with, why is it has to be you? I tried to talk to my boss but then he told me that I am the only one he can rely on making sure that Watanabe’s talent won’t go to waste. He did told me her academic background. She has an IQ of 180 and graduated in Tokyo U with the highest marks.I can’t do anything but sigh and just surrendered to this fate.

“And this is how you perform the maintenance for the main servers. Make sure to create a back up first before doing this step.” She wrote down the step on the company issued journal as I continue.

“Do you have any questions?” I asked her.
“Hai, ano, Kashiwagi-senpai, do you have a boyfriend?” that question caught me off guard.
“Excuse me, Watanabe-san?” I asked back.
“I’m asking if you have a boyfriend?” she asked again.
“Watanabe-san I believe that your question is not related to what I’m teaching you right now. Please focus.” I told her. “But to end your curiosity, I don’t have a boyfriend but I did use to have a girl friend on whom I hate right now.” I continued.
“What a waste then.” She said and then she chuckled. Afterwards she asked a question related to the things I taught her a while ago.

Seriously, what’s wrong with this kid? Is she messing up with me?

“Kashiwagi-senpai~~ Let’s eat lunch together” Everyone looked on my direction and shock is all written on their faces.

I, myself is shock too. Can’t this girl feel it? My aura is saying “Don’t feel too familiar with me!”. I was about to say no to her but she grabbed my wrist and run to the back garden. Everything moved in slow motion as we run. What is this feeling? I feel so, comfortable.

We stopped and then sat on the bench just below a huge Gingko Tree. What is this kid thinking dragging me here? I never said yes to her offer. This is troublesome!

“The sky is so nice isn’t it senpai?” she asked.
“. . . . . “
“Oh well, itadakimasu!” she said before eating her bento. This is going to be bad for my health.

Since then, we always eat lunch together on that spot. Most of the time, she always talk about herself. Her memories from her childhood, how everyone knew she was a genius and she even told me how she lost her past relationship. Even though I felt annoyed on her stories, it would be impolite to tell her to stop isn’t it? So I just kept quiet and listen to her while eating my lunch.

There are sometimes that it rain and we cannot eat outside so we decided to just eat on the cafeteria. I can hear everyone gossiping while looking at us. But she didn’t seem to care. At least we have one thing in common.

“Senpai, why did you broke up with your girlfriend?” she suddenly asked me. This kid, is she really naïve or too insensitive? Why did she bring up the question?
“I believe that I have the right not to answer that question Watanabe-san” while I continue checking if the newly trimmed Ethernet cables are working.
“You called me with my last name again” she pouted.
“Eeh?”
“Just call me Mayuyu, senpai. We’ve been partners for four months now.” She said
“That would be so unprofessional Watanabe-san, what might the others think if I can you with that nickname.” I told her.
“Mou~~~ Then just call me with that nickname when we are together” she insisted.

I just sighed with annoyance. I guess there is no helping it.

I told her everything. From how Geki and I met, until that very day she left me. Mayuyu, just listened and didn’t interrupt. I no longer shed any tears; I think she can feel how lonely I am.

“I’m sorry to hear that. I guess I became a little insensitive.” She said. A little? I can’t believe her!
“It’s okay. I mean, there isn’t any sense for me to cry anymore.” She nodded and seems to agree on what I’ve just said.
“You are right. But I think the most important thing that you need to do is to forget her and try opening your heart to someone who really loves you.”
“. . . . “
She caught me off guard again. How should I response to what she have just said?

Suddenly, she stood up and looked at me with a serious face. This is my first time seeing her like that.

“Senpai, no, Yuki. Please go out with me!” she said.

This can’t be happening again.

Part 2

“Senpai, no, Yuki. Please go out with me!” she said.
“Watanabe-san, this is not a good joke.” I told her with the coldest tone that I have.
“. . . . . . “.

There was only silence and all you can hear is the ticking of my wrist watch. (Author Notes: How silent could this scene be?).

“The fact that no one understands you doesn’t make you an artist.” She said after a long period of silence.

“. . . . .”

“That quote is from an unknown author and I’m very fond of it.” She said.

“You are showing your ‘Black’ personality to other people so that they won’t know how lonely you are. They don’t have any idea on the pain that you have experienced and how you are trying to move on with that.” She continued. “Please give me a chance; you don’t have to reply now. Take all of the time that you need to think about it. I’ll be here waiting.” She continued with the usual smile that she wears.

“Don’t talk like you really know me. Who are you and how you dare say that to me?” I snapped after hearing what she said.

This girl really makes me furious now. She only knows part of my story and yet here she is acting like she knows me well. She doesn’t have any idea how REALLY PAINFUL it was to be left behind by someone you loved for a long time.

I glared at her but she didn’t even bother to break it. Instead, she returned my death glare with her own warm one.

“As I told you, I am willing to wait for your answer. To answer your question, well, I am Watanabe Mayu, the one who fell in love with her senpai, Kashiwagi Yuki in first sight. I swore to myself to know the story behind those strong but empty eyes that you have and now after hearing your story, I want to become the missing piece that will complete you.” She said.

Before I can say anything, she looked at her wrist watch and told me that she have to go. It was already 5:30 PM, the end of our office hours. I’m now seriously pissed off!

I cannot sleep that night because of her confession. Come to think about it, why should I think about it in the first place? I’m not interested in her, am I?

I closed my eyes and tried to go to sleep. But what I saw was how cute she was when she confessed to me. Those pair of warm eyes that didn’t hesitate to fight back with my legendary death glare, what I can see is determination and sincerity.

Don’t tell me, I’m also starting to fall for her.

No!! I should stop myself before it is too late.

Yuki, remember what happened the last time you fell in love. Remember the pain that you have to bear if things didn’t work out. I shouldn’t give in with her charm.

I fidgeted in my futon when I felt my phone vibrated. When I opened it up, there was a message from the witch herself.

From: Watanabe Mayu
Subject: Nemui~~~

Yuki-senpai <3
Have a good night. Please don’t think too much of my confession.
I’ll see you tomorrow!

Mayuyu <3 <3

P.S Please don’t get your mind full of my cute expression a while ago. I’m a little embarrassed (*^_^*). And please, don’t think that I’m a witch.

This kid is so full of herself!!!!! Is she mind reader or something? How can she know that I’m thinking about her confession?

Then another message came.

From: Watanabe Mayu
Subject: Nemui~~~

I’m not a mind reader.
We can just say that this is the power of my love for you. (~^_^)~

I raised my eyebrow after reading her last message.

How did I got myself involved with this weirdo. This is really giving me a headache.
And then with that I finally got myself to sleep.

setting up Mayu's IQ to 180 is somehow challenging,
I found it pretty difficult to show how would she continue persuading our black princess here. . .

somehow, sorry to fail everyone with this chapter,
To be honest, I really had a hard time thinking of any ideas to satisfy the "accidental cliffhanger" that I've made on part 2. . :thumbdown:

But hope you guys like this.

Part 3

The next morning, I’ve decided to act like nothing happened the day before.

I need to strengthen my resolve. If I don’t want anything similar in the past to happen, I must keep her at bay.

“Show the usual stone face that you have” I told myself.

I entered our office and I was expecting to see the girl in question since she’s always too early. But no one is inside except me. Somehow I felt relieved but I also wondered what happen to her.

It is just like something is not right when she’s not here.

I looked at my wrist watch and saw that it is almost 15 minutes before 7:30AM. Few more minutes before the phones starts ringing and requests (from having slow network connectivity to no connectivity at all) begins to pile up.

I decided to get myself a cup of coffee to start this day right. I went straight to the pantry. As I walk closer I swear I’ve heard giggle-like voices. As I open the door, 2 figures startled me. The first one is a midget squirrel-like woman and the second one is the witch herself.

“DOKKIRI SUCCESS! OSHIRI~~!”. They both shouted happily. Afterwards, they formed a w like hand sign.
I don’t care about the sign. How dare them to startle me like that.

I glared at both them of them especially the midget squirrel Yuko. She just continued laughing and keeps on telling me how funny my face was when they did their prank.

Yuko is both my friend and colleague. We’ve been working together ever since I joined the company 4 years ago. She and her girl friend Haruna were the ones who introduced me to Geki and even set us up on a blind date. When Yuko knew what happened to our relationship, she was very furious at Geki that she almost wanted to beat her up if Haruna didn’t stop her.

Despite being a pervert and a person who loves doing pranks, Yuko is a very reliable friend and confidant. She and Haruna stayed and do keeps an eye on me even when I started to push everyone away and acted coldly towards them.
And now it seems that she found a new partner in crime to help her with her pranks. I never see this coming. Somehow I just want to mentally face palm myself. I already am having a hard time keeping the genius girl at bay, and now these two have joined forces, I now don’t have an idea on what will happen next.

Since their laughter won’t die down, I stood up and hit their heads.

“Ittai!” both of them complained.

“If you do that again, I’ll make sure that you’ll regret it.” I told them.

“Besides Nyan Nyan, I’ll be glad to be your punching bag!” Yuko said.
“I’ll accept any punishment that Yuki will give me~~!” Mayu said with a grin.

These two really get along with each other and it gives me a lot of headache.

Their crazy antics ended when it was time for us to start working. Somehow, with Mayu joining the crew, the work load is not that heavy anymore and since she is a genius, she is now able to handle things all by herself.

“Black~~” I just try to ignore Yuko when she is calling me with that nickname.
“Hey! Stop ignoring me.” She said
“Can’t you see I’m busy? If this is about anything perverted that you did with your girl friend then tell that with your new friend.” I told her.
“I see here that someone is jealous! Can you stop being a tsundere?” she grinned.

PAK!
“Ittai! What’s that for?” Yuko said while feeling the newly spawned bump on her head.
“That is for saying nonsense.” I told her and returned my attention to what I am doing.

Yuko just smiled then hug me from behind.

“Haruna accepted my marriage proposal.” She said.
“Is that so? Well, congratulations to both of you then” I said with a monotone voice.
“Hey! You sound like you’re not happy for both of us! You sounded like a cyborg!” Yuko pouted and releasing her hug.

Somehow I felt like giving Yuko another bump on her head when she told me that. But hearing how happy she is, I decided not to do so.

“Yuki, we’ve been friends for years now. I saw everything from how you fell in love for the very first time until Rena decided to end everything. Somehow, I felt responsible for the pain that you’ve suffered. I was the one who introduced you to her anyway.” She said.
“. . . . .”
“But you know, everyone deserves a happy ending just like me and Nyan Nyan. You also deserve to be happy.” I just kept silent as she continued.
“Why don’t you give Oshiri sister a chance? I mean, she looks so serious about you.” she said.

“Yuko, if Watanabe-san asked for your assistance to make me say yes to her, I’m afraid that it won’t help. Besides, you also said that same thing about Rena not so long ago.” I admit, I was a “bit” harsh saying that to her.

Yuko just sighed and shook her head. It seems like she is ready to give up with this conversation.

“Oshiriri did tell me about her intentions but she didn’t ask me for any assistance. I already warned her that if she ended up hurting you in the end, I’ll forget our oath to each other and make her regret it.” she told me with a now serious face.

Our conversation ended when Yuko’s phone rang. It was Haruna calling asking Yuko to meet her for their wedding preparations. When she was about to leave, she told me to think about it and don’t make any rush decisions.

“You might regret losing someone who is so sincere about you.” She said before going out.

That crazy girl! What did she do to make everyone approve with her?

I've been writing for a few days but decided to scrapped out the first draft.

So Here I am with this not so good update. .

I hope you guys can forgive me. . .

Part 4

“Oshiriko! Tadaima!” Watanabe-san shouted as she enters the room.

She stopped for a moment and scanned the area but her pervert oshiri sister is not in sight. She just then smiled after seeing me instead (while me giving her a glare) and went back to her work area.

There was again, silence and I felt a little awkward. Somehow, I remembered what happened yesterday and started feeling a little bit conscious when she is around. I tried not to look at her direction since she may notice it.

“I heard that Oshiriko and her girl friend are getting married.” she said breaking the ice that is almost building up.
“. . . . . “
“Hey, aren’t you happy for them?” she asked while giving me a questioned face.

I wanted to give her another glare so I look at her. But then, I can feel my cheeks heating up after I saw her wearing a pair of red eyeglasses. Mou, if being cute is a crime, I might have called the police and ask them to arrest her.

Cuteness Level: Extremely Deadly

After seeing my face all red, she gave me a worried look and asked me if I was okay but I was too dumbfounded to answer her, instead, I just simply nodded. She then approached me and pressed her forehead on mine.

“You don’t seem to have a fever, are you sure that you ‘re really okay Yuki-san?” She asked.

“Pull yourself together. Don’t fall for her damn it!” I told myself.

I snapped out of the trance and pulled my face away from hers. I want to mentally face palm myself for letting my guard down.

“Don’t be full of yourself, you’ve just confessed to me but it doesn’t mean that you can do anything that you like, Watanabe-san.” I told her.

She just smiled again and looked relieved after hearing me say that.

“I’m glad that you are okay then. I might have sent you to the clinic if in case that you really have a fever and didn’t I tell you to just call me Mayu or Mayuyu?” She pouted.
“That won’t happen.” I told her as I returned my attention to what I am doing.

She just gave me a loving look and then went back to her work area.

I really hate to admit it. But deep inside, I’m starting to fall for her.

This is bad.

1 hour earlier.

“Mayu~” I heard my cousin, Watanabe Miyuki called me.

I waved at her and gave her a signal to follow me on the nearest fire exit. I can’t risked being seen by my beloved Yuki-san and know what I’m currently doing.

“How’s it been Milky? Is Sayanee treating you well?” I asked her.
“You don’t need to worry about me, Mayu. Sayanee and I are still going strong. I should ask you the same question. Is your Black Angel treating you well?” She said and giving me a grin.

I nod my head and looked at the contents again.

Somehow, fate has a lot of tricks on its sleeves.

Don't kill me for the random pairings. I did make second thoughts on posting it since you might throw something hard in my head.

Part 5

Somewhere in the city. . .

“Time flew so fast, huh? “ I asked myself while walking in this familiar but not so ordinary path. While repeatedly singing your favorite song in my head, I tried to remember all the good and painful things that we have gone through.

I grinned as I am almost on my destination. I bet she’s quite upset right now because I wasn’t able to visit her for 2 months. She can’t blame me though, since I’ve been busy with work and some other stuff.

I’ll tell her everything that happened on the period of my absence. Honestly, I’m not sure on what will be her reaction.

With one final step I was able to reach your place.

“It’s been a while. “ I told her.

Taking a deep breath, I bowed down and continued.

“Please forgive me. But I’ve fallen in love with someone else!”

The gust of the wind can only be heard. You didn’t show any reaction nor utter any word.
I stood up and lovingly read the beautiful name carved on the stone marker in front of me.

“Mayu! If you don’t get up now, we will be late on our first day as 2nd year high school students!” she said while trying to pull me up from my bed.
“Erena-chan, just 5 more minutes” I told her as I try to go back to sleep despite her efforts to try waking me up.

This is our daily routine. I’m not really a morning person. Despite having four different alarm clocks around me, I just shut them off and go back to sleep. That is why my mom asked Erena, my best friend since childhood to always check on me and make sure that I won’t go back to dream land.

With her patience running out, she stopped pondering me and went straight to the window and pulled the curtain sideways allowing the bright sunlight to lighten the previously dark room.

I tried to cover my face with my blanket making Erena face palm herself knowing that her attempts are not working. But then, I think a bright idea entered her mind when she grabbed her bag and went to search for something inside it.

“Mayu, if you get up right now, I might just give you this new CD that I bought in Akihabara the other day” She said.

I finally opened my eyes to see what Erena is holding and it grew wider when I recognized the CD that she is showing to me.

“Hey! Isn’t that Warota’s single “Hatsukoi Dash”? I have been looking for that CD! Where did you find it?” I asked her.
“You don’t need to know since I’ll be giving this to you once that you are fully awake and get ready for school.” She replied.

Darn it! She really knows how to make me obey her. I may have an IQ of 180 but she is the only one who can make a fool out of me.

Why you asked?

Because of one thing that they call. . . Love.

Yes, I am in love with my best friend ever since I can remember.

“Mayuyu, Erena-chan! OHAYOU~~~!!” This very energetic and loud girl greeted us as we barely made it in class.
“It’s still early but you’re being noisy again Jurina-chan.” I told her while putting my pinky in my right ear.
“And it’s still early but you’re being too grumpy. Didn’t Erena-chan give our sleeping beauty here her morning kiss?” she teased.

Before I forgot, this loud girl here is Matsui Jurina. We met her during our 1st year in middle school. To make things short, Jurina is the only person who knows about my feelings towards Erena. She tried to play cupid for both of us but all of her antics failed.

“Jurina-chan, stop teasing Mayuyu already” Erena told Jurina making the other girl giggle.

Jurina’s constant pestering stopped when Shinoda-sensei walk in and announced that the new transfer student is here. She asked the new student to enter and almost everyone became excited and commented on how cool looking the new student was.

“Yokoyama Yui desu, yoroshiku onegaishimasu” she said.

Even with a very simple introduction, it was able to intensify the excitement of the other girls. I also heard Erena said how cool she was which made me annoyed.

Shinoda-sensei asked Yokoyama to sit on the vacant chair two chairs in front of me. Jurina was able to see how I secretly glare at Yokoyama-san and tapped my shoulder.

“I think you got a competition” she told me.
“Whatever” I replied and shifted my attention outside the window.

To be honest, besides Yuki and Jurina, I can't think of anyone I can pair with Mayu.
Then I did remember watching AKBingo, considering that Erena and Mayu are at the same age, I thought I should give it a go,

I even considered someone from Warota and the sister groups but it would still not fit.

Sorry for the wait guys, for some reasons, Mayuyu's past may take 3 chapters in total to finish. I know it may sound so boring, I'll get back to MaYuki's scene once I figured out what cause Erepyon's passing =.=

Part 5.1

Three months had passed since then.

With days passing by, Jurina and I noticed how close Erena and Yokoyama-san had become. We still do our daily routine, but she is spending more time with the newcomer than me which literally make my blood boils.

“Nee Mayu-chan, why are you not doing anything? At this rate you might lose to Yokoyama-san” Jurina asked me with a concern look.
“I don’t have an idea on what are you talking about Juju.” I told her.
“Being a tsundere doesn’t suit you so please stop acting like one! Mou, I don’t know what do to with you anymore. Just don’t come crying to me one day because I’ll just hit you.” she just then sigh and went outside the classroom. I bet she’ll be hunting some cute girls again.

I just ignored what Jurina told me and just continued watching over my best friend. Somehow, I really want to tell her what I feel, but I’ve just decided to keep quiet and simply observe on what will happen.

“Yo Erepyon, let’s go home” I told Erena after the class was dismissed.
“Gomen Mayuyu, I promised Yui-han to help her study for the exams.” she apologized and looks at Yokoyama’s direction.

I couldn’t help but raise my eyebrows on what she has just said. Since when did Erena become so good with her studies? The last time I checked, she almost failed Math and English making all of my efforts helping her go to waste.

I also looked at Yokoyama’s direction, the latter notice that Erena was looking at her and smiled. Then I looked back at Erena, she lowered her head but I didn’t miss seeing her face starting to show hints of redness.

Somehow, jealousy is starting to get through me. I clenched my fist and tried to keep my cool.

“I see, have fun with you new best friend then. See you tomorrow.” I told her with a sarcastic tone.

Erena was about to say something but I immediately wore my hoodie up and walk away from that place. I really suck at this. I know that it was my choice to observe and not do anything, but somehow I can’t stop these feelings of frustration, anger and jealousy.

“Hey Mayu-chan, do you want to-“ Jurina was not able to finish her sentence as I just passed by her. Seeing me walk at full speed while wearing my hoodie up and has both earphones on, she was smart enough to figure out that something happened.

It was a warm but relaxing day. This kind of atmosphere makes me feel so drowsy. With my hands crossed behind my head, my eyes are slowly becoming heavy.

“What do we have here? It is the start if the 3rd semester but it seems that sleeping beauty is waiting for her prince to kiss her~~”.

I opened my eyes and saw Jurina’s face with her cat like smile plastered on it.

“Yo!” I greeted her and flicked her forehead.
“ITTAI! You don’t need to do that you know” she complained as I try to go back to sleep.

“Skipping classes again?”

I just nodded.

“I didn’t know that you can become so, rebellious. Love is really complicated, huh?” she continued.
“I can’t believe hearing that from a player like you” I told her with annoyance.

Jurina then sat down on my right.

“Seeing you like this wants me to beat the hell out of Yokoyama. But come to think of it, it was your own fault anyway not saying anything. I already warned you didn’t I?”
“Hai, Okaa-san”
“I’m being serious you know?”
“I am too.” As I finally let my drowsiness takes over.

If I can remember correctly, news about Erena and Yokoyama being official became a hot topic during the start of the 2nd semester. I know I should be happy for Erena, but seeing them together plus the fact that their relationship escalated too quickly kills me. I should be the one by her side and not that newcomer. I distance myself from her and started skipping classes to save myself from further heartache. I even ask my mom to makes excuses to make her not come in to my room anymore. What a drama right?

Since she is my FRIEND since childhood, Erena figured that something was wrong but could not pin point what it is. She tried to confront me, but I always find a way to get out of any more awkward situations with her.

As I open my eyes, the previously blue-colored sky was already replaced by an orange one. I looked at my watch and saw that it was already 5 PM sharp. That stupid Jurina, she didn’t even wake me up.
I’ve decided to go back to our classroom to get my things and head back home.

As I enter our classroom, I didn’t expect to see Erena sitting on my chair as she is watching the sunset. That scene was priceless, seeing how beautiful she had become over the years.

“I didn’t expect to see you still here. Waiting for your girlfriend finishes her club activities?” I asked startling her.
“Mou Mayuyu, don’t scare me like that!” she said.
“I ask Yui-han to go ahead without me. As a matter of fact, I’m waiting for you to come back here and get your things.” She continued.
“What for?” I asked again.
“Do I need valid reasons to walk back home with my best friend?” she said while using her greatest weapon; puppy eyes.

I just sighed and accepted defeat which made Erena rejoice. She grabbed her things on her desk and made her way out of the room with me following her. I admit, I kind of miss this.

T here was nothing but total silence and awkwardness as we walk back home. Wanting to break the ice, Erena tried to tell some failed jokes which intensified the awkward atmosphere more. But having the “my pace” attitude she finally asked the questions that was bugging her the whole time.

“Ne Mayuyu, why are you becoming so distant to me all of the sudden? Was it because of last time?” she asked.
“No.” I told her.

Erena sigh in relief.
“It is my way of saving myself from heart ache.” I continued.
“Eeh?” she said and stopped walking.
“Mayuyu, don’t tell me that you are inlove with my Yui-han?” she asked

I stopped walking and glared at her.

“Don’t you dare say that name” I answered with anger.

Erena was surprised to see me reacting like that. To be honest, this is her first time seeing me on that state. I turned around and walk back to her direction and stopped right in front of her.

“Listen, I’ll only tell you this once.” I told her
“I don’t care anything about Yokoyama. I’m sorry, Erena, but I’ve fallen in love with you for as long as I can remember. So if you really care about me, for what is causing my heartache, please stay away from me.” I continued.

Seeing her dumbfounded, I left her on that state. As I walked away from her, I heard her shouted;

“Mayuyu no BAKA!”

Then she ran away and passed through me.

She’s right. I am indeed a baka am I?

Our already awkward situation became worse. Since that confession incident, it seems that Erena is avoiding me now. Way to go genius.

Should I feel any remorse for this? I guess not. Maybe this is the right decision for both of us. I should just accept that she and Yokoyama are a good match.

With one final attack, I was able to shut off the last stupid alarm clock. I lazily stood up from my bed. Having a very bad bed hair, bed marks and all, I looked at my calendar to confirm what day it is.

Right, today is the beginning of the new school year. Our senior year.

(Getting sick of the fast forward events? Please blame author-san for this, she told me that she is having a hard time on her work so she decided to speed things up).

Wearing the familiar seifuku uniform, I went on my way to school. I was wondering on what she’s been doing.

“Good morning genius!” someone shouted.
Honestly, I don’t need to look on any direction to know that the ever so annoying puppy like friend of ours just greeted me.
“Hi there!” giving her a high five.
“By the way, it seems that Shinoda-sensei used her sadistic behavior again to force the whole faculty staff to put us all in the same class.” Jurina said.
“Only foolish people won’t know that she doesn’t want to memorize different names again. How stupid.” I told her.
“You got it right and it also means that we’re in the same class with the most popular couple in school” she continued.
“. . . . . “

I just kept quiet and gave her a glare, but instead of being scared, Jurina just smiled.

We went ahead to our classroom and waited for homeroom to start. Somehow, I saw Yokoyama-san entered the classroom as well, but there are no signs of Erena. This is odd, I looked at Yokoyama with a questioned face. Seeing me do that, she gave me a hand gesture that Erena is not with her then she bowed down like she was apologizing.

Somehow, it made me feel uneasy, but I decided to just ignore her absence and brought my attention to Shinoda-sensei who just entered the classroom.

But as a few more days passed, there are still no signs of Erena. This is now making me worry. I never change my e-email address nor my cellphone number, but ever since the confession incident, she never contacted me.

Having no other choice, I walk to where Yokoyama is seating after our last class was finished.

“Hey there” I greeted her while giving her a quick hand salute.
She looked at me and gave a quick bow.
“I guess you already know why I am here?” I asked her.
“Hai.”
“Okay, so where is she?”
“Gomenasai, but she asked me not to tell you her whereabouts”
“Why is that?”
“She doesn’t want to make you worry”
“But she is now making me worry” I answered while raising my right eyebrow.
“I understand your point, but please be patient. She also told me that once she is ready, she will be the one to tell you why.” She said and then excused herself to attend club activities.

Seeing that Erena is not answering my mails and calls, I just followed what Yokoyama told me. I waited even though it is almost killing me.

Two weeks later, Yokoyama-san approached me and said to meet her after school.
“She said that she wanted to see you.”

To be honest, I never expected (nor dream) for this moment to come. How do you expect me to walk with my “rival” where I don’t have the slightest idea where we are going?

As she is walking a few good meters ahead, I can’t help myself but to keep glaring at her (even though she has a *ahem sexy back.)

“Ano, Watanabe-san, I know that you hate me coz you think I stole Erena. But glaring at me like that won’t do anything” she said making me raising my eyebrow again.

Tsk, does this girl have psychic powers or something?

“By the way, we’re here now” she continued.

Seeing the tall white building in front of us gave me a not so good omen. What in the hell is happening here? In all places where we can meet Erepyon, why does it have to be in a hospital?

We entered the building and went straight to the eighth floor. Yokoyama then stopped walking.

“She is in the last room in the left. I’ll wait for you here.” She said.
“You don’t need to be jealous because your girlfriend asked her best friend to see her.” I told her with a sarcastic voice.
“She broke up with me in the start of the 3rd semester. Now go, she’s waiting for you. I’ll stay here and then we can talk about it” she replied.

Her last statement bothered me. But knowing that Erena is waiting, I went straight to her room.

Now for the moment of truth. I knocked on the wooden door. After hearing a faint “come in” I opened it and saw my beloved best friend lying in the hospital bed while watching the sunset.

She is still beautiful, but now observing her state, it makes me want to run towards her and cry. She became thinner, everyone knows that she has a pale skin, but not as pale as this one. It is like color was drained from her. Only stupid people would ask why. But I can understand what is happening.

My Erepyon is sick.

Fully aware of my presence, she looked at my direction.
“It’s been a while” she said
“Hai” I just nodded.

After a minute of silence, I decided not to hold myself back. I obviously threw myself to her and hugged her tight. She hugged me back as she also started to cry.

“Stop crying you big crybaby, they might think I made you cry” I said
“But . . y-you j-just d-did BAKA!”
“Remember that my IQ is 180 so don’t call me BAKA!”

I’ve released myself from the hug, and pressed my forehead with Erena’s.

“But perhaps you’re right. I’m indeed a baka for not telling you the truth.”
“I missed you Mayuyu”
“I missed you too”

“And I Love You” we said in unison.

“Thank God those two finally decided to be honest” the puppy looking girl said
“Matsui-san, you know that eavesdropping is quite a bad habit right?”
“Call me Jurina. But are you okay with this kind of setup Yokoyama-san? I mean she’s your girl friend after all”
“She was. Besides, seeing her happy is already my happiness.”
“Such a martyr”
“You can say that”

Part 5.3

“The doctors cannot give any definite answers. They said that the disease is too rare and there is no known cure for it. They gave her a month more to live.” Yui-san explained.

We are now on our way back home. As much as I want to stay at Erena’s side, the head nurse won’t allow me. They said we need to follow visiting hours. Darn rules.

“She knew all about it but she didn’t mind informing me.” I replied with a bitter tone.
“I’m sorry.”
“For what?”
“For getting in the picture and falling in love with Erena.”
“. . . . “
“When I first confessed to her, she said that she is already in love with someone else. I already had the idea that it was you. But I still didn’t give up. I was really happy when she finally agreed to go out with me, but in the end, the only person she can think of is you.”

Hearing these things from Yui-san makes me feel not only stupid but a jerk as well. I didn’t expect that because of me acting like a coward would hurt not only Erena but her as well. This person is amazing; she made such a sacrifice even though it will hurt her a lot. For that, I am starting to respect her.

“So as what I’m saying Watanabe-san, please make Erena’s remaining days happy. Don’t dare making her cry or else I would show you how scary people from Kyoto are.” She told me with a threatening face.
“You don’t need to threaten me. I’ll make sure that I’ll make up for those months that I’m not on her side.” I replied.

“And thank you for taking care of her while I’m away sulking in the dark” I continued earning a pat on the head from her.

I don’t have any more time to play around. Erena’s condition became worst overtime. Her medications were given to her via injection, seeing her and those life support equipments connected to her hurts me a lot. But I told myself to be strong for Erena or else she’ll worry.

“Nee Mayuyu, if I’m gone, please don’t stop yourself from loving someone else.”
“What are you saying? You’re still alive and yet you’re telling me already to look for someone else?”
“That’s not what I’m trying to say BAKA!” she said.
“I will be thankful if you can remember me from time to time. But I don’t want you to close this *points on my heart, from the others. I want you to find your happiness even if I’m gone.” She continued.

I took her hand and kissed it then held it tightly.
“I’m sorry, for being a coward. If only I told you that I really love you from the start, we should have spent a lot more time doing lovey dovey stuff “ I told her

I can’t help myself but smile when I saw her blushing like crazy.

“Mayuyu no Hentai!” then she hit my head softly.

Then Erena caressed my face and I just look at her lovingly.

“Thank you for everything Mayu, thank you for being my best friend, for loving me, for spending my final days with me. I just have one final request.”
“Anything for my princess”
“Kiss me.”
“If I kiss you that will mean having an indirect kiss with Yokoyama”
“We never got to that point.”
“Eeh?”
“What’s with that expression? I want Mayu to give me my first and maybe my last kiss. But it is fine if you don’t want to, maybe I’ll just haunt you fore--- hmmpff”

Not waiting for her sentence to finish and being careful as well, I shut her up by kissing her. Erena’s eyes widened for the sudden action but became relaxed as the kiss lasted for a few minutes. I released myself from the kiss when I felt that oxygen ran out from my system.

“Thank you Mayuyu, I can now rest in peace” she said while our foreheads are pressing each other.

A few days after that scene, Erena passed away.

Now looking on the stone marker, I want to remember only the happiest memories that we have together.

Back to the present time

“She’s such a beauty but she has a cold demeanor. ”
I end up spending my time telling Erena about Yuki as if like she will reply to all on what I am saying.
“But you don’t need to be jealous; you still hold this special place in my heart.” I teased her.
“Well then, it is time for me to leave, I’ll come here some other time. I miss you a lot“.

I was about to walk away from my position when I saw two people walking close on where I am standing. I immediately recognize the first one, it was Yokoyama-san. I bet that the girl with a salty expression is her girl friend.

“It looks like someone here also found her happiness.” I told myself.
I greeted the couple before taking my leave.

Thinking of seeing Kashiwagi Yuki again tomorrow made me smile and made me look like a baka.
