A new version of novel-adopted movie "A Chinese Ghost Story" starts shooting on July 1st.

Hong Kong director Wilson Yip and members of the cast and crew of the film held a press conference in Beijing to promote the shooting of the film, Mtime.com reports.

Yip along with the main stars Louis Koo, Liu Yifei, Yu Shaoqun, Fan Shaohuang and Kara Hui attended the conference. A prospective trailer was released during the event, showing the names of the main cast members. Reporters noted that the appearance of Koo's name and role as Swordsman Yen before Yu's name and his role as Tax Collector Ning, who was the main male character in the original novel and previous films, implied that the new story might greatly differ from previous ones.

Yen confirmed that the film's storyline, and in particular its structure and character relationships, would be new. This time, the plot will revolve around Swordsman Yen. The cast members also said there would be a love triangle among the three main characters.

Compared to earlier versions of the film, Yip said his movie would incorporate contemporary elements that he believes are more suitable for modern-day society. Although 3-D technology is popular in the current film market, Yip said he would not use it in his film.

The original story written by 17th-century Chinese author Pu Songling is a love story between a tax collector, Ning Caichen, and a ghost named Nie Xiaoqian. It has already been made into films many times before, with the most famous being a version produced by Hong Kong director Tsui Hark, starring superstars Leslie Cheung and Joey Wong.

The Chinese-American co-production for "Double Lives" held a press conference in Beijing on Wednesday, CFP.cn reports.

The film's budget is over 100 million US dollars and stars Pierce Brosnan, American actress Brit Morgan, and actor Billy Zane (lol). The director, Rob Cohen, collaborated with Jet Li in "The Mummy: Tomb of the Dragon Emperor" in 2008 which was also a Chinese-American co-production.

The director attended the conference, along with stars Zane and Morgan. Although Brosnan was absent, he sent an email apologizing and promised that he will definitely take part in the filming this September.

Cohen expressed his curiosity and favor for China at the conference, and he highly acknowledged the achievements of past Chinese directors. His first impressions of China came from the films of Zhang Yimou, Chen Kaige and John Woo, all of which helped him learn about China and then later inspired him to make films here. Besides "The Mummy 3," Chinese audiences are familiar with his previous projects such as "The Fast and the Furious" and "XXX."

He also said he will add Chinese elements to this film, including using a few Chinese actors and actresses. However, the production company has not given any details.

Billy Zane was in the 1997 film "Titanic," where he played Rose's fiancé Caledon 'Cal' Hockley. He revealed that "Double Lives" is a story about a treasure hunt while police from China and America work together to track down an international criminal. The actor said the film had comedic elements similar to Jim Carrey's style.

It is reported the cast crew will visit some outdoor lots in Beijing, Hangzhou and Hengdian, preparing for the film's shooting.

Cohen also told the media that he is planning another film called "Kung Fu," and he has already contacted Jet Li. The Kung Fu star said he would be glad to participate in the film if invited.

Andy Lau and Gong Li, both highly popular among Chinese movie-goers, will collaborate for the first time on a romantic comedy that is a Chinese remake of the American film "What Women Want", Sohu.com reports.

Lau and Gong appeared together on Wednesday in Beijing to introduce the film to local media.

In the movie, Lau will play a manager at an advertising firm who can read women's minds. He uses the ability to tackle his boss, played by Gong Li, but ends up falling in love with her.

Previous reports suggested that Mel Gibson, who starred in the original version of the movie, was likely to make a guest appearance in the Chinese remake.

Filming is underway.

"Aftershock" Premieres in Hong Kong
2010-07-19 15:40:12     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: yangliu

The premiere of director Feng Xiaogang's latest film "Aftershock" was held in Hong Kong on Sunday, July 18th.

The premiere of director Feng Xiaogang's latest film "Aftershock" was held in Hong Kong on Sunday, July 18th.

Almost all of Feng's films have gone on to become blockbusters in the Chinese mainland. All of his films have made more than one billion yuan at the box office. Hong Kong audiences in the past haven't been quite as receptive as audiences in the mainland. Last year the director said, "It's enough that Chinese films take care of the mainland market only."

"Aftershock" will be released simultaneously in Hong Kong and in the mainland on July 22nd. After premieres in several major cities such as Beijing and Shanghai, some audiences were moved to tears, while many praised the director's latest work. Even in Guangzhou, the box office record of 75 thousand yuan set by the historical film "The Founding of a Republic" was beaten as "Aftershock" generated 100 thousand yuan in one day. So, what has been the reaction from Hong Kong audiences?

According to the NDDaily report, audiences who watched the film at the Hong Kong premiere said the film made them both laugh and cry. Some thought it was very touching and it made them feel warm, especially when actress Zhang Jingchu reunited with her mother, played by actress Xu Fan. Some felt surprised by actor Chen Daoming lines, especially when he said, "a few fools were educated at universities too."

On the other hand, several Hong Kong citizens stopped to see the poster but didn't go into the theater. One uncle who is about 50 years old said he is not prepared to see it because it sounds too tragic. Two girls in their 20's stated they would not see it, "We don't have an interest to see it. We'd rather go see a comedy or a romance instead." Yet, not all Hong Kong young people are uninterested in it. Another young man who had seen director Lu Chuan's "City of Life and Death" wondered if "Aftershock" was a documentary. When heard it was a drama, he said he would consider taking his family to watch the film.

At the premiere, there were a few people from the mainland who missed the opportunity to see the film when it premiered in their hometown, and made the special trip for the Hong Kong screening.

even more gripping trailer.

'Detective Dee' to Open on Sept. 29
2010-07-22 09:43:52     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: yangliu

"Detective Dee" is another heavyweight work produced by Huayi Brothers after this summer's "Aftershock".

Director Feng Xiaogang's latest film "Aftershock" will launch on the big screen on Thursday (July 22). The production company, Huayi Brothers, told potential viewers that they should arrive at screenings early so as not to miss the extended trailer of the suspense film "Detective Dee and the Mystery of the Phantom Flame" before "Aftershock".

Directed by Hong Kong filmmaker Tsui Hark, the film "Detective Dee" stars Andy Lau, Carina Lau and Li Bingbing.

In addition, Huayi Brothers also said that "Detective Dee" is scheduled to open in cinemas on September 29.

According to a report by the Oriental Morning Post, "Detective Dee" is another heavyweight work produced by Huayi Brothers after this summer's "Aftershock". It was sold to an impressive 11 markets in 3 days at this year's Cannes Film Festival.

The production company released a trailer last month and offered a preview of the plot for the first time. However, the CEO of Huayi Brothers, Wang Zhonglei, said that director Tsui Hark and screenwriter Chen Kuo-Fu have created a Tang empire which is far beyond anyone's imagination.

"Audiences could only see the tip of the iceberg in the first trailer," said Wang. "With the new extended trailer released, people are able to look into the extraordinary world more closely."

Tsui Hark's upcoming 3-D film "New Dragon Gate Inn" is likely to have a spin-off.

The Hong Kong director has embarked on a 3-month filming process, testing the 3-D equipment and techniques he will later use for making "New Dragon Gate Inn", the Beijing News reports.

Tsui is hoping to release the test film as a standalone feature, the report says.

Actress Charlie Young has been invited to star in the test film which is about the lives of urban women.

Young told the newspaper, "Filming in 3-D is quite interesting. Every time I finish a scene, the first thing I want to do is stride behind the camera and check out the effect with 3-D glasses."

Tsui's 3-D crew received training from Chuck Comisky, visual-effects supervisor of James Cameron's "Avatar".

"New Dragon Gate Inn" is a remake of the 1992 classic film "Dragon Inn", which follows Ming Dynasty General Chow Wai-On who fights the power-hungry eunuch Tsao Siu-Yan at a deserted inn called Dragon Gate. Tsui produced that film.

The cast is yet to be announced for the remake.

Filming will officially begin in October.

Zhang Yimou's new film "The Love of the Hawthorn Tree" will open in Chinese cinemas on September 16, the director's producing partner Zhang Weiping has announced.

The film will join a blockbuster-filled September, competing with Andrew Lau's "Legend of the Fist: the Return of Chen Zhen", John Woo's "Reign of Assassins" and Tsui Hark's "Detective Dee".

"The Love of the Hawthorn Tree", based on a popular novel of the same name, tells a poignant love story set in the 1970s.

Nineteen-year-old Zhou Dongyu, a little-known actress, plays the lead role.

The film marks Zhang Yimou's comeback to the art-house genre after such commercial attempts as "Curse of the Golden Flower" and "A Simple Noodle Story".

Ex-blacklisted actress vies for Chinese-language 'Oscar'

TAIPEI — Tang Wei, an actress once blacklisted in mainland China, has been nominated for a Golden Horse Film Award, the "Oscar" of Chinese-language cinema, organisers said Friday in Taiwan.

Tang Wei, 30, is up for best leading actress for her performance in "Crossing Hennessy," a Hong Kong film that also stars Jacky Cheung.

The mainland-born actress was barred from acting for a period after performing in Taiwan-born director Ang Lee's 2007 World War II thriller "Lust, Caution", in a role which won her a Golden Horse for best new performer.

Allegedly she angered mainland authorities over a series of sex scenes in "Lust, Caution", because of their acrobatic nature and because they involved her character and a that of a Chinese collaborator working for the Japanese.

The winners of this year's Golden Horse awards will be announced at the 47th annual ceremony on November 20.

"When Love Comes," a Taiwanese family drama, leads nominations for this year's Golden Horse Film Awards, vying for honors in 14 categories, including best film and best director.

Also vying in the best film category is "Bodyguards and Assassins," a commercially successful martial arts film set in the waning days of the Qing dynasty in the early 20th century.

"Seven Days in Heaven," "Judge" and "The Fourth Portrait" also compete for the best film honour.

Ethan Juan, one of Taiwan's most popular young actors, has been nominated as best leading actor for his role in "Monga", a gangster film set in Taipei a generation ago.

The category also includes Wang Xueqi, a veteran Chinese actor starring in "Bodyguards and Assassins."

As for it's rumored Cecilia's pay is higher than Carina's, Raymond said: "This is trade secret. We cast Cecilia, definitely thinking it's worth it. The total investment fee is at least 50 million."

As for Eric Tsang to film New Year film <我愛香港> [I Love HK] to compete, Raymond said: "He is jealous that my 'All's Well End's Well 2009' did well in box office. Hope he would win this time. Improvement results from competition."

Ang Lee Gets Male Lead for His First 3-D Work
2010-10-27 15:36:18     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: Duanlei

Seventeen-year-old Indian boy Suraj Sharma has been chosen by director Ang Lee to star in his 3-D film. The movie is an adaptation of Yann Martel's novel "Life of Pi", the Dongfang Daily reports.

Suraj Sharma, a student from Delhi, beat over 3,000 teenage boys competing for the role. It's been a year since Ang Lee announced his plans to put the adventure story on the big screen, but finding actors and determining the budget is a lengthy process.

According to a report by USAtoday, the investor, studio Twentieth Century Fox, has lowered the budget from the original 70 million USD to 50 million USD. However, it will still be shot in 3-D, as the director explains, "The ocean is perfect for 3-D. I think it will change the way people experience the sea."

"Life of Pi" was published in 2001. It tells a story of an Indian boy named Piscine Molitor Patel or "Pi" for short. The boy survived a shipwreck with four animals, with only a female orangutan, an injured zebra, a hungry hyena and a brooding Bengal tiger.

The film is expected to be released in 2012.
