"The Departed" (directed by Martin Scorsese) is the remake of Hong Kong gangsta hit "Infernal Affairs" about a mole in both the mob and police force. It opens today in North America. Let's compare, discuss and all that good shit.

On the one hand, I'm obligated to hate it, as the latest Hollywood (possible) mangling of great asian cinema. (see "Shall We Dance")
On the other hand, it has an all-star cast, and Scorsese's directing. At least they'll try to make a good movie, I guess.
Bottom line: Probably still won't see it. Might be worth a rental later.

What's annoying is Scorsese and the actors keep praising the writers for coming up with a brilliant script during interviews, but don't ever mention that it's a remake.
Anyway, here's what Andy Lau had to say about 'The Departed' :
Speaking after the film's Hong Kong premiere, Lau noted that although it used several quotes from the original, it contained far too much bad language, and felt that it went on too long, combining elements from all three films in the trilogy, though the film makers had only paid for the rights for the first episode. When asked to rate the movie, Andy rather generously responded: "I would rate both versions 8 out of 10. I think what I don’t like the most is how they made Kelly Chen and Sammi Cheng’s characters into one. I don’t think that the two male characters would like one female. But the remake is ok to watch".
Some early reviews I read agree with Andy. Sounds like the way they expanded the psychiatrist's role to appeal to female viewers was done very awkwardly.

I'm usually wary of "all-star casts". The only time I've seen it work decently in recent movies was Clooney's remake of Ocean's 11. Any other time, it's just one big ego-fest to me. Scorsese's a brilliant director, and it'll definitely be interesting to see how he interprets the story.

I probably won't watch it, if I do I'll wait until it gets to the cheap theatres.

The Infernal Affairs trilogy are one of the best set of films ever made in my opinion. It is a rarity in my case to actually go and own movies these days given that I have a modified xbox and utorrent.
But these films were breathtaking. When I first heard about the departed like some of the guys above, I too loathed the idea. Since I haven't seen the Departed yet, I'll reserve final judgement.
Again, I agree with some of the comments about Hollywood scripts "borrowing" from other films, I mean they're going to remake the dam busters!!!!!!!!!!!!

Just saw The Departed this evening. It rocked!
Best movie of the summer, and definitely joins the pantheon of great mafia movies: The Godfather I and II, Goodfellas, Once Upon a Time in America, Scarface, Donnie Brasco, and Casino. Finally, after all these years, DeCaprio shows he can really act. Damon finally washed the bad taste of the Bourne-series from my mouth. Scorsese hones each of the characters to a razor sharp edge.
Say what you will about Infernal Affairs, but The Departed stands on its own as an excellent movie.

Several people seem to take issue that this is the remake (actually, reimagination) of Infernal Affairs. But come on, guys and gals, this isn't some two-bit hollywood hack mailing in a mediocre movie, this is Martin Frickin' Scorsese we're talking about here.
The man is a living legend. When Hong Kong cinema was just surviving by making light-hearted comedies, Scorsese gave Robert De Niro a mohawk and a mean streak. When the world thought that brutality was Bruce Lee going chop-socky on some silly white guy, Scorsese was redefining violence in Raging Bull. Please don't think that I'm knocking down Hong Kong cinema; it's just that I believe that giants and pioneers should be given the respect they deserve.
And let's not forget that Infernal Affairs isn't the first work that has been a reimagined by Scorsesi. It joins the distinguished company of The Last Temptation of Christ, Raging Bull, The Age of Innocence, Cape Fear, Bringing Out The Dead, and The Aviator. Goodfellas was based on a novel and went up against the two Godfather movies, and to this day, people are still getting into arguments about which was better, Goodfellas or Godfather. It is disgraceful to say that Scorsese is remaking Infernal Affairs because he has no talent or no ideas.
If I was a self-respecting movie maker, and Martin Scorsese remade one of my movies, I would consider that the greatest of professional honors. The fact that the remake was not only awesome as a stand-alone film, but also explored issues that the original didn't focus upon is further illustration for the great respect that Scorsese had for Infernal Affairs.

I just saw it last night. I admit, I'm not a fan of mafia movies and the like and I thought this movie was going to just be "okay" for me, but it turned out better than I expected. I got really into it in no time, haha. Plus, it's obviously got an AWESOME cast!
People are saying that DeCaprio might win an Oscar for his role here, and I'm totally for it!

Scorsese's directing and seeing Jack are the ONLY reasons why I'm even considering watching this movie. DiCaprio's way overrated as an actor IMO, as he has a tendency to take things "over the top" a little too often to keep things realistic. He's expressive, but can't act.
Matt Damon on the other hand, is very wooden in terms of his facial expressions (i.e. whether he's happy/mad/whatever, his facial expression barely changes, if it does at all). He can act, but he's not expressive.
In a weird way, they're like the newest "odd couple". :lol:

Holy fuck that was an awesome movie, much much better than I thought it would be. I thought all the actors did a great job, especially DiCaprio. If I had not seen IA before I would have said this in the best mob movie ever. As it were, the stupid ass "Hollywood happy ending" kinda ruined it for me.
Did I say how fucking awesome this movie is?

I think it's kinda lame that a lot of scenes are so similar to the ones in IA. Kinda takes all the suspense out of it. And maybe I missed it but they never revealed what was in the manila envelope that DiCaprio gave to the psychiatrist.

I prefer the asian version because Andy Lau and Tony Leung really bring out the essence of the characters in the movie.

I haven't yet seen the remake, but I'm dying to just out of curiosity. Well, I guess that's how I am with all TV and movies nowadays, but that's another story. I think the thing that gets me the most is that they were talking about remaking IA for like, 3 years or so already? Its about damn time that this came out, sounds like they put this together very carefully and thoroughly.

Hired out "The Departed" DVD last Sunday, even though we've already seen it before, since it has Japanese subs for the wife, plus it came with a "bonus" DVD of extra scenes/footage etc.. Well, that was what was written on the cover, but no...the video store took out that disc and replaced it with some fuckin' "Supernatural/The OC" disc.. It wasn't a mistake, the bastards do that to try and flog other releases... :banghead:
Still haven't watched "Infernal Affairs" yet, cause the bloody DVD here doesn't come with English subs...

haven't seen either movies, but I've heard great things about both.
People always tend to like originals more than remakes, whether it's justified or not is all I really gotta say.
I gotta try and see them some time though.
But instead I'm gonna watch the remake before the original to see how my opinion differs.
