Title: General Japanese Hip-Hop Thread
Post by: arun.yothin on June 01, 2005, 05:09:14 AM
I was wondering how many J-Hip-Hop fans there are here, and who you like. I've only heard stuff from m-flo and SOUL'd OUT, but I like them a lot. What are some of your favorite groups and songs?

Mine are:
m-flo - The Quantum Leap
          DOPAMINE w/ Emyli and Diggy-Mo
WAY U MOVE w/ Dragon Ash
          Ten Below Blazing
SOUL'd OUT - CLONE AS A FUNNY CREATURE PREACHER
                    To All Tha Dreamers

Tons of stuff.  I love Ketsumeishi, M-Flo, Heartsdales, Bennie K, and soul'd out, among others I'm discovering all the time.  M-Flo is especially awesome since they collaborate with everyone under the sun, so their sound is crazy diverse.

soul'd out is shit.

old school mflo was way better. i don't even consider them hiphop anymore.

rumi is someone i suggest. i never thought there was such thing as good hiphop in japan untill i heard rumi.

Thanks for the song. I didn't really care for it too much but I would like to check some more stuff before I dismiss Rumi based on this one song.

If you like japanese rap/rnb you better check out Culture Universal (http://www.cultureuniversal.com/main.htm), it's definitely the best site about japanese urban music.

Anyways my favourite groups and artists are Nujabes, Nitro Microphone Underground, Muro, Rappagariya, Rhymester, IQ, K-Dub Shine, DJ Tonk, DJ Krush, Fu-Ten and many others.
I'm not a big fan of all these hip-pop bands like Rip Slyme, M-flo and Heartsdales.

Thanks again Jin. I really liked Otona To Yobe, everything about that one was good. Bourei Pape's beat was cool. Wasn't really feelin Akimecra though. Overall, Rumi's stuff is real good.

M-flo's cool, I loved the duets they do with other artists.  There's also this one J-HH video that I saw I few months back, where a bunch of guys were just sitting around a pool looking at chicks in bikinis.  I don't know the name of the song, but I definitely liked the video!!!   :w00t:  :w00t:  :w00t:

Would Orange Range be considered J-HH?  If so, loved thier songs Hana and Locolotion.

I really recomend the PVs Funkastic and Galaxy from Rip Slyme and the album Astromantic of m-Flo. The best Hip-Hop i've heard on earth ^^

Was anyone expecting M-flo to do a song with Shadow the Hedgehog? LoL.  It's actually a pretty decent song though,I don't mind it at all.  As for J-Hip Hop though I personally don't like the way it sounds (much like North American / English Hip Hop).  If you wanna hear something that flows nice, listen to K-Hip Hop.  Bands like Drunken Tiger, 1TYM, YG Family (yes I like them aside from what most people say about them) and even DJ Doc has some pretty good Hip Hop ish feeling tracks.

Just have to say that Heartsdales (http://wiki.theppn.org/Heartsdales) are a hot duo, and just love their sound with a mixture of Japanese and English.  I'm not a huge fan of rap, but these girls blend it really well with the total sound - plus they are HOT AS!!!!  They released their 4th album (http://wiki.theppn.org/Ultra_Foxy) last month (Feb 2006...  also here (http://www.cdjapan.co.jp/detailview.html?KEY=RZCD-45328)).  Don't have it yet, nor their first     Soon, perhaps!

"We love hip-hop! Do you love hip-hop?!"

I'm listening to Rhymester's Heat Island album right now. It's turning to be quite a solid album. At first I started to get bored with the first few tracks, but it started to get better. It's good, but not really their best stuff. I think my biggest problem with it is that some of the stuff is pretty cliche.

As a sidenote, I think it's important for people to understand what hip-hop really is.  Big bells and alarms go off in my head when I start seeing groups like Ripslyme and Bennie K (which is a group I'm a big fan of, but they're not hip-hop) get mentioned.
Title: J-Hip-Hop
Post by: StreakInTheSky on April 05, 2006, 09:43:35 AM
I think they could still be concidered to be hip-hop. It's more "poppy" than what most purists concider to be hip-hop but I think the genre has become very broad and they really don't fit anywhere else imo.

Post by: plug on April 05, 2006, 04:07:28 PM
I don't really like japanese hiphop, most things i heard were wannabe-american-raps , and since i don't like american hiphop.

I like halcali and rip slyme though, they're different  :) .
Title: J-Hip-Hop
Post by: inksquid on April 30, 2006, 05:54:46 AM
The Rhymester Island is a mixed bag but it is pretty interesting. I think the J-Urban scene isn't really my stuff and that cuts out half of everything in the Hip Hop music. I think Rip Slyme & Halcali are mostly pop themed Hip Hop though I think their theory is quite sound. I mean Hip Hop doesn't need a standard especially when its roots are Disco :D

hmm original m-flo with lisa was the best back in the day...they got a lot poppier now with a somewhat generic sound, but they're still ok...never really got into the jhiphop scene, but i like some of buddha brand's beats, as well as shing02....if your looking for just altogether quality rap/hiphop music, korean artists like dynamic duo and drunken tiger is the way to go! just my opinion though...

Only really mainstream guy I really like is WISE. He's in Teriyaki Boyz. His single with Salyu was probably one of my favorite hip-hop tracks last year, but that has a lot to do with Salyu too. He has more of an American street style than most Japanese rappers, so that's probably why I like him.

Korean, Japanese hip-hop artists to perform at music fest

Several of the biggest names in Korean and Japanese hip-hop will be taking the stage for a summer music festival next weekend in Korea, according to the concert's promoter TYPE Communication on Friday.

TYPE announced in a press release that Japanese rappers Zeebra, Simon and Dabo will be performing along Korean artists such as LeeSSang and Jung-in, Supreme Team, Double K and SOUL DIVE for the "What's Up Summer Hiphop Festival" to be held at the Walker Hill Theater on August 28.

The music fest will also feature the performances by Korean DJs DJ R2 and DJ Freekay.

"We hope that this concert which features the best artists in Korean and Japanese hip-hop, will create a place for our music festival in the long run," an official from TYPE explained.

Zeebra is one of the most popular rappers in Japan since his first appearance in 1995. He has also performed live with various rappers in the United States.

Dabo first appeared in the Japanese hip-hop scene in the 1990s and has released three albums since 2002. His lyrics are hard-edged and represent a tough Japanese street culture.

LeeSSang is Korean hip-hop duo composed of Gary and Gil. They formed in 2002, collaborating with Drunken Tiger, T and Big Mama King.

Jung-in released her first album "From Andromeda" earlier this year which features the title track "I Hate You."

Supreme Team is another hip-hop duo featuring members E-Sens and Simon D. They have two albums titled "Supremier" and "Spin Off."

Double K, whose real name is Sohn Chang-il, is a rapper who is a member of the Korean hip hop music collective Movement Crew.

SOUL DIVE, a hip-hop trio, made their debut in 2009 with their first album "Mad Scientist & Sweet Monsters."

Tickets for "What's Up Summer Hiphop Festival" is available on Interpark (www.interpark.com (http://www.interpark.com)).

Has anyone listened to Rip Slyme's new album GOOD TIMES?
It's like a super "best of" album with two new songs!

And no, I did not find the key sadly...
