They're AKB members who originally tried out for Morning Musume during the the 8th gen auditions. Sumire even made it to the final round (along with Yuu Kikkawa).

Exactly. People who aren't into AKB won't still know who they are.
I only know Sumire's name because I remember her from the MM auditions.

Personally I don't care if they are considered "cuter" or "more talented" (I don't really know or give a crap)... I've seen Mitsui live and she's just a warm fuzzy lovely girl. I'm really tired of "fans" complaining how she's not good enough. Fuck off, Mitsui is love, and back when she debuted she picked up things pretty damn quickly. Quicker than 6th gen, possibly quicker than 5th gen. And she did that with the pressure of being the only 8th gen. With fans complaining someone else should've been picked over her. She's a strong little thing who unfortunately had to go through an intro similar to Gakisan's (who was strongly disliked when she joined), and now has to leave because of an injury. Maybe she was planned to have a storyline similar to Gakisan's, but now she won't have the time or chance to do that.

At least early on, Tsunku purposefully didn't choose girls that he figured would make it in the business anyway... I mean the entire premise of MM was choosing the losers of an audition to form a group, how much more obvious can it get? I'll never understand fans pointing out how girls he didn't pick debuted somewhere else. So what? I'm sure he knew that would happen, especially with how many girls he has to turn down, and guess what, I bet he doesn't give a fuck. And I don't give a fuck, because I'm a Morning Musume fan, and Aika is a great Morning Musume member. Unfortunately she was the victim of being sole member chosen for her gen from the audition, and the victim of bitter fans.
