Not sure. But I'm gonna move this to THE GEEK aka Akihabara section for some expert advice :tama:

I usually use DVD Decrypter to rip it into .vob first

and then I use VirtualDubMod coupled with Panasonic DV Codec to export it to .AVI

this way I don't lose any quality (I usually use them for editing). and the file size is reasonable as well.
afterwards, If I want to put the video in my ipod or anything, I just use video converters like xilisoft or others like it

maybe my way is too complicated? haha :P this is what works for me though, so maybe someone knows a simpler way? :)

I use magic dvd ripper, its not free but its pretty cheap, 20 bucks for the full use.

it works for free for like 15 days tho, and it does AVI with subs if you want.

I use handbrake (free). Not sure about the windows and Linux versions but it works fine on OS X. There seems to be AVI support but I generally don't go with that format.

DVD Decryptor + GK or Handbrake work just dandy

Or buy a huge hard drive, rip everything straight to ISO instead!

ImgBurn ftw! it's pretty much the updated version of DVD Decrypter iirc.
