Mayuyu & Paruru The Next Generation Candidates’ Adult Vow!?

Watanabe Mayu (19) and Shimazaki Haruka (19) are attending their coming of age ceremony on the 13th of this month. They are both turning 20 years old in March. Just before they join the world of adults, Sponichi Newspaper’s “Congratulatory Interview” was accepted. Watanabe acquired her first center position in “So Long!” released last year in February, and Shimazaki advanced to 12th place in the General Elections on June. Now, the extent of their adulthood of these two are…!?

 A part of within yourself where you think “I’ve become an adult”?

Mayuyu: Recently, I’ve properly been able to put into words the things that I’m thinking about. I wonder if I’ve grown little by little.

Paruru: I have been able to ward of things. My heart has gotten wider. I think I’ve gotten stronger. No matter what people say I don’t get hurt (laughs). I’ve gotten to think that it’s fine whatever people say.

 The part where Watanabe-san feels Shimazaki-san’s adultness?

Mayuyu: She’s fashionable.

Paruru: Today is amazing (bitter laugh)

Mayuyu: Short sleeves…(laughs). But, I always see your fashion and think you’re fashionable.

 The part where Shimazaki-san feels Watanabe-san’s adultness?

Paruru: Everything. Even in this interview, it doesn’t seem like we’re the same age, isn’t she level-headed!? Mayu-san is cute and as an idol she’s perfect!

Mayuyu: No no….(Blushes and laughs)

Paruru: We don’t see each other in private! I don’t know what Mayu-san does on her days off.

 Conversely, what childish aspect do you feel within yourself?

Mayuyu: My eating habits. I have a lot of likes and dislikes, and ever since I was small I couldn’t eat vegetables. When I become an adult, I think that I have to fix my eating habits.

Paruru: I have a lot of childish aspects, but I don’t want to fix them.

 What aspects?

Paruru: My attitude comes out right away. If I dislike it, I dislike it, and if I’m tired, I’m tired (bitter laugh). (TN: Pretty much means that it shows when she feels a certain way)

 Shimazaki-san has become more of an adult lately!?

Paruru: Is that so!? I’ve certainly been able to answer the questions compared to before (laughs)

 Your vocabulary increased than before!?

Paruru: Vocabulary…? Ah, that’s right! When I become an adult, I want to remember more words (laughs)

 From now on as an adult, what role would you carry on in AKB?

Mayuyu: Since long ago, AKB is a place where its good qualities and importance are conveyed to the girls who are newly joined, so I’d like for that to be properly conveyed.

 It’s surely an adult role!?

Mayuyu: Since before, the seniors who supported AKB are graduating one after the other which feels dangerous, that awareness has sprouted.

 What about Shimazaki-san?

Paruru: I’m bad at handshake events…No matter how hard I try it’s impossible so I’ll just leave it alone (bitter smile)

Mayuyu: You’ll leave it alone!? (laughs)

Paruru: I’ll try my best at other things. For example, when I appear solo on magazines, people learn about me, and it’d be great if people who aren’t interested in AKB become interested. Anything is fine, but I’d like to look for a new position.

AKB48 Group Newspaper, Jan 2014

Mayuyu part interview from girls48 translation:
Quote
Interviewer: “On the cover of a certain magazine, Mayuyu was touching Paruru’s butt.”
Paruru: “It’s true!! Mayu-san. She touched my butt!”
Mayuyu: “Eh? My hand!? Eeh, it’s a lie~.”
Paruru: “Now you caught our relationship (grins)”
Mayuyu: “Nonono, don’t take it wrongly (laughs)”

Interviewer: “Mayuyu-san who likes idol, what do you think of the salt response like Paruru-san’s.”
Mayuyu: “Indeed I’m worried about her existence. Even though she is not only salty, but I’m very attracted to this child who brings a little different air to the surroundings. When you get to used to Paruru for one day, then you would like to enjoy the salty reaction for the entire day (laugh)

AKB48 Group Newspaper, Jan 2014

Full translation by neve at http://www.akblogs.net/article_translations/202-watanabe-miyuki-watanabe-mayu-shimazaki-haruka-interview-akb48-newspaper

Quote
The people to decorate the first opening page of 2014 are AKB48’s Watanabe Mayu (19), Shimazaki Haruka (19) and Watanabe Miyuki (20) who has a concurrent position in NMB48. These three characteristic idols are at their highest points ever. Of course they talked about their vows, becoming 20 years old, but as they’re the same age, they could really talk to each other and show their true opinions.

Mayuyu turns 20 on March 26th, Paruru on March 30th and Milky was born on September 19th, so you’ve already come of age. Are you drinking alcohol?
Milky: I’m not really drinking much. I’ve had a little, but I know that I’m pretty weak, and I haven’t gotten to grips with it yet. I don’t have anyone to get used to it with.
Hmm?
Milky: I’d drink together with someone, but amongst the members there’s nobody else who’s my age.
Are the other two of you interested in alcohol?
Mayuyu & Paruru: [Look at each other]
Paruru: There’s nobody around me who drinks.
Mayuyu: Me too.
Milky: Hehehe, Mayuyu, I think it’d be bad if you got drunk.
Mayuyu: Why me!?
Milky: Normally you’re such a classic idol, so your stress…
Mayuyu: [Rolling her eyes] Stress!?
Everyone: [Laughs]
Milky: If you got drunk, you’d vent all of it!
Mayuyu: Everything would come out?
Milky: Hahaha, it’d all come out.
When you act like a classic idol, stress builds up?
Milky: Up until now, we’ve seen nothing from Mayuyu but her professional side. So if she drinks alcohol, that’ll all crumble away, and we’ll be able to get an impression of how she really is.
Mayuyu: I can do it~ [Laughs]. It’s scary, I wonder what I’d be like. I’ve no idea.
Really?
Mayuyu: I’m not someone who stores up stress, so it wouldn’t be like that. But I wonder what people would say about me [ironic laugh].
Milky: Paruru seems like someone who doesn’t get stressed. For me, I was really looking forward to today. During Paruru’s interview, she spoke so straightforwardly, she didn’t seem interested at all. Just once, I wanted to try being in that place. What kind of thing would I say, I wonder.
Everyone: [Laughs]
Milky: I think Paruru really understands what everyone expects of her.
Mayu & Paru, you’ve done gravure and interviews together before, but it’s the first time that the two of you have done anything with Milky.
Milky: That’s right.
Paruru: That’s true, it’s the first time.
Talking of that, there’s a new year issue of a certain magazine with Mayuyu touching Paruru’s bottom.
Paruru: It’s true--!! Mayu, you’re touching my bottom.
Mayuyu: Eh? My hands!? Aaah, it’s not true~
It looks very natural.
Paruru: Our relationship leaked out [grins]
Mayuyu: Nonono, I don’t swing that way [laughs]. I was just being photographed in my natural state…
Milky: Your strange habit has been revealed.
Everyone: [Laughs]
Mayuyu: I wanted to see if my hands were a good fit [beaming]
You two have the kind of relationship where you can naturally touch each others' bottoms?
Mayuyu & Paruru: That’s right! [laughs]
How do you behave in the dressing room?
Mayuyu: We chatter. I wonder if it’s because we’re the same age.
Paruru: That’s right.
How about you, Milky?
Milky: I talk to them both. I’ve been in teams with both of them.
You also did the Takarazuka Pose together.
Mayuyu: That’s true. I really wanted to do it, so I took advantage of the opportunity.
Milky: It looked fun.
Mayuyu: In the AKB48 group, there is a wide range of ages, but you don’t really feel the difference in age, and everyone feels like they’re from the same generation. These days, there’s an atmosphere of the seniors and juniors being on the same level.
However, as a 3rd generation member, you’re really senior to the other two by a long way.
Mayuyu: Does it seem that way?
Milky: But Mayu, you’re easy to talk to.
Mayuyu: Ah, I’m happy.
Milky: Because we’re the same age.
Mayuyu: I don’t feel like the 9th generation or NMB48 members are my juniors, so I want them to approach me as a friend. I’ll be happy if they speak to me like that.
Milky, you seem like the type to approach other people and start conversations.
Milky: I talk a lot to people, and have high confidence.
So, the two of you are sociable?
Milky: I think so. So I was looking forward to this gathering today.
Mayuyu: Milky is really sociable, and is the kind of person who loves everyone.
Milky: You say that, but I’m actually quite selective, hahaha.
Everyone: [Laughs]
Mayuyu: Really~?
Milky: I’ll confess to this because it’s the two of you I’m talking to, but I actually have a specific type that I like.
Tell us more clearly.
Milky: Their personality should be kind and cute in an ordinary way. Paruru has a cute face, so she’s a perfect example of the type that I like to talk to, hehehe.
In the November issue, Milky, you revealed that “Paruru’s face is my type, but she has a bad personality.”
Milky: I didn’t say that her personality was bad, just that it “wasn’t good”, hehehe.
Paruru, when Milky cut her hair, you bluntly said, “It doesn’t suit her”
Milky: People said that every day~. Things like, “You should wear extensions.” Someone said that today.
Paruru: But long hair is cute.
Milky: For me, long hair is nice, but I enjoy having short hair more, so I’m still wondering. It’s an unconscious thing. Although you said that Paruru, it didn’t sound like you hated it.
You’re not feeling depressed?
Milky: I’m not [laughs]
Paruru: Really, is that true? It looks depressing to me.
Mr Okada: Paruru, when you sent your mother a picture of yourself with twin-tails on your cellphone, didn’t she say it looked bad? I saw it.
Mr Okada, to suddenly interject into our discussion is…
Mayuyu: Ah, he told us his feelings~ [laughs]
Paruru: [Completely expressionless]
Milky: Fufufu.
Paruru, how did you feel the first time you met Mayuyu?
Paruru: At that time, I had so many seniors, and I couldn’t talk to any of them. Now I don’t feel that kind of atmosphere at all. I also start conversations with people. I started talking to Owada Nana when we were shooting the PV.
Owada said, “Paruru and Mayu were kind.” Although she also said, “Milky has a perverted face”...
Milky: I haven’t done any work with Owada yet. But during the rock-paper-scissors tournament, she caught my eye as a really sexy girl. She’s the kind of girl who could become centre. Maybe when I was looking at her, I unconsciously had a perverted expression on my face… ufufu…
Mayuyu: What next?
Milky: I went straight over and talked to her. Fufufu.
Mayuyu and Milky, you both like searching for cute girls.
Milky: Paruru also likes girls.
Paruru: I’m not in a relationship with a boy or a girl, but I like anyone good-looking!
Mayuyu: Hahaha
Milky: Although you say that Paruru, I think you’re a specialist in plain looking guys.
Paruru: What? Who are you talking about?
Milky: Not telllliiiiing~
Paruru: Ah, you’re talking about *%&$. That guy isn’t handsome, but he’s cool when he appears on television [laughs].
When we’re young, we’re largely judged by our outward appearance, but as we become adults, there’s definitely more stress placed on our entire characters including our personalities.
Milky: Paruru is living proof that people become more charming as they grow up.
Paruru: That’s true. Milky said something clever for once.
Everyone: [uncontrollable laughter]
Mayuyu, how about we talk about what kind of guy you like?
Milky: That’s certainly something I’ve never heard.
Paruru: Actually, I've asked her a lot about this. “What kind of guy do you like?” But she never gives me a straight answer. So I’m always asking her over and over again.
Mayuyu: That’s true, Paruru is always asking me [laughs]
Paruru: Things like, “Older guys or younger guys?” and, “Cute types or cool types?” I’ll say, “Just answer yes or no.”
Paruru, what are the results of your analysis?
Paruru: Aaah, I still don’t know. She’ll give me vague answers, but the essential information is still missing…
Mayuyu: Really, I don’t have a specific type!
Milky: ...Really?
Paruru: ...That’s a lie… If that’s really true, you’re sick. I’m worried for you.
Mayuyu: Mmmm, it’s less that I don’t have a type, and more that maybe I’ve shut all of that down. I’m working as an idol, so I close down all of those feelings.
Paruru: Mayu, you poor thing. You’re an idol, so…
No no no. Paruru, you’re also an idol!
Everyone: [uncontrollable laughter]
Milky: It’s okay to shut that down, but in the same way that you like Takarazuka, it’s okay to think about it a little. Kind of like, “This person’s cool.”
But for example if you said, “I like older guys,” you’d be insulting your younger fans - is that what you’re thinking?
Mayuyu: I am afraid of that. Whatever I do, I don’t want to upset my fans.
Paruru: Okay, let’s end this topic already! Mayu, you poor thing. You clearly don’t want to answer us.
Mayu: You say, “You poor thing,” but I don’t feel hard done by at all. It’s sad [laughs]
I don’t mean to press you.
Mayu: Don’t worry about it. It’s work after all.
At the end of the year, Nogizaka 46 had a concert at the Japan Budoukan, but Mayu seemed to be enjoying it more than anyone else. When you go to see Nogizaka and Takarazuka, it looks like you really let out your feelings.
Mayuyu: There’s no mistake about that, I really like those people.
Milky: You can completely immerse yourself in it, right?
Mayuyu: I’m someone who puts their preferences before anything else.
Milky: I’m not so interested that I’d want to pay that much money to see them. For example, if you want to see Takarazuka, you have to really think ahead and try your best to do that. I’m someone who just thinks, for example, “I want to eat that delicious food,” and don’t really think about other people. I envy you for that, Mayuyu. I think you can be more fulfilled that way.
Mayuyu: I’ve had a real interest in them for a long time, so I can pour my emotions into that.
Mayuyu, your thoughts about love seem really complicated.
Mayuyu: For me, it’s not that difficult. Occasionally, it’ll come up on the radio or something, and I won’t know what to say at all. But in the end, it’s something about me, so it’s something I have to understand. Giving up would be… there’s no excuse for it [ironic laugh]
Paruru, what are your interests?
Paruru: I don’t have any interests. Just like Milky. Sleeping, eating.
Milky: Yeah, we’re the same.
What gets you through the day, then?
Paruru: My family, perhaps. My parents and my younger brother…
It’s cool that it’s something so important.
Paruru: Really? [laughs] But I like spending money - for other people more than for myself. My parents are 41 years old, and starting to pass middle-age, so I feel like I should be loyal to them as much as possible.
You say that they’re middle-aged, but I think that’s wonderful. What did you get your family for Christmas?
Paruru: I'm getting my younger brother a video game console - I chose it with him yesterday.
And to think that Yasuhi Akimoto talked about your 'salty' character.
Milky: She has a gentle character around her family ~
Now, as idols, you no longer have youth on your side, but instead your most important equipment is your skills and experiences. Please tell me your impressions of each other as you turn 20 years old. Milky, tell me what you think of Mayuyu.
Milky: I can't see anything wrong with her. She's really charming.
Mayuyu: What, in what way~?
Milky: You're kind, cute, and you're the kind of idol that nobody could imitate. For example, you don’t ever have supper with me. I think that you’re living so thoroughly as an idol, to the extent of not even showing me what your life is like. I’ve been moved to tears by you before. When you sang “Kimi no Na wa Kibou” during the AKB48 Kohaku Singing Contest, and when you sang “Sotsugyou” at the FNS Music Festival. Those times, my heart was really shaken. You’re not only good at singing, you can do anything. There isn’t anything that isn’t possible for Mayuyu ~ that’s what I think.
Mayuyu: Aaah, I’m happy. I’m shining…
Paruru, how about Milky?
Paruru: Hmm. I haven’t really thought about her in that way before.
Milky: Aaah, aah, what’s that?
As an idol.
Paruru: Ah. That’s what you mean [laughs]. She can naturally and gently talk to people at handshake events, which is something I can’t do.
Paruru, at Yamauchi Suzuran’s birthday in December, you said, “I don’t want to become a fisherwoman”.
Paruru: Aren’t Milky and Suzuran different? [laughs] Milky can interact naturally.
Milky: Ah, whether or not an adult woman wants to be called a ‘fisherwoman'… I can see that you don’t want to call me a fisherwoman. Hahaha, you’re a nice person.
Paruru: Mayuyu hasn’t changed since the time I joined the group. She still walks the noble path. She has an on-off switch, and hides the parts that she should hide. Since the time when I was still a normal person, I’ve liked that kind of idol. And her face is cute [laughs].
It’s forbidden for an idol to show off her personal life?
Paruru: That’s right. But for me that… was impossible [laughs].
Mayuyu: Why the past tense?
Paruru: I’m not facing the future. That’s what’s natural for me.
So, while you’re keeping your real life completely hidden, Mayuyu, now that you’ve turned 20 years old, please invite Milky out to supper and try drinking alcohol!
Milky: Definitely! ~
Mayuyu: Aaah, scary… [laughs]
Mayuyu, how are you with your family?
Mayuyu: My family and my old friends know who I was before I joined AKB48, but now things are a bit different.
Milky: You have friends!?
Everyone: [uncontrollable laughter]
Mayuyu: That’s a harsh question.
Milky: What kind of friends?
Mayuyu: Childhood friends - normal people who aren’t related to AKB48.
Milky: How do they feel?
Mayuyu: With my childhood friends from before, it doesn’t feel like I’m an idol, it just feels normal… … Ah, it went quiet all of a sudden [laughs].
Go Hiromi was described as the “24 hour Go Hiromi”. Whatever time it was, he was having fun.
Mayuyu: That sounds like it would be hard sometimes.
Milky: So let your heart out to me sometimes. Say the things you couldn’t say here… ufufu.
Mayuyu: Somehow it’s scary… [laughs]
Milky: Is that so… [whispers into Mayuyu’s ear]
Mayuyu: [laughs] Aaah~ I can’t say it to anyone here, but it’s true. There are times when I’m messing around with the other members, and things go too far.
Milky: I was shocked when I saw that side of you. So the Mayuyu that people see on television is… shall we say… [laughs]
Mayuyu: It’s really not that big a deal, it’s normal.
Is it something like Oshima Yuko’s running around naked?
Mayuyu: [shakes her head] Nothing like that, nothing like that.
Milky: But it’s something on a level with Yuko.
Mayuu: Really~ [laughs brightly]
Milky: It’s really high tension in here!
Mayuyu: Anyone would think so.
Milky: I wonder if an audience would even be surprised by the idea of Oshima Yuko running around naked on television. But if Mayuyu did something similar, it would be a huge revelation to everyone. So I won’t say anything, ufufu.
Mayuyu: It’s scary, don’t tell ~. I’m sometimes less formal with people in the dressing room. It’s just the balance of being ‘on' and ‘off'.
What are your vows and objectives on turning 20?
Mayuyu: Yup, I don’t really have any determinations for my 20th year, but I don’t want to change anything that’s good, and I want to continue evolving and growing.
Mr Okada: Milky, you’ve changed, right?
Milky: I’ve got some idea of the various ways I’ve changed, but I enjoy looking forward without worrying about what happened in the past. Honestly, I don’t care about how I’ve changed, but I think I worry less than I used to.
Mr Okada: Before, when something big happened, when your comrades would all write about it on their blogs, you wouldn’t write anything about your feelings. But recently, you’ve been writing about yourself the most.
Milky: It’s not really that it’s a conscious thing, but if you say so. I respect Paruru doesn’t take anything seriously, and so in order to stop caring what people think, I’ve been beginning to think that it would be good to show more about myself.
It’s thanks to Paruru?
Milky: Why I’ve changed. Ah, but! Everyone, have you noticed the nature of Paruru’s unsociable attitude? Actually, Paruru thinks too much about what other people think of her. She composes her reply while worrying about how she might hurt the person she’s talking to. Isn’t that right, Paruru?
Paruru: [Blushes as Milky stares at her face] ….. It’s better if I don’t say anything. [Bitter laugh]
Milky: Right!? You’re so kind, Paruru. I think you choose every word you say so carefully. In interviews and in conversations, whatever’s said, you always come up with something. You’re definitely a sophisticated person.
If I remember correctly, there have been times during MCs at performance when Paruru’s been observed keeping quiet so as not to get in the way of the other girls who are talking.
Paruru: I’m not sure I see what you’re getting at, but sure, there’s a part of me that’s like that. But even if that’s the case, there are times when I say something that’s misunderstood. Only I know what I mean.
Sometimes, when you drop a bomb, it seems very calculated.
Paruru: I was just thinking about the timing.
Milky: Right!? Paruru’s such a sophisticated person.
What do you think of becoming 20 years old, Paruru?
Paruru: Up until now, I haven’t really been interested in other people, but I’m thinking of listening to what people say now that I’m 20. For example, the three of us are the same year, and we’re all idols, but we’re totally different people. For example, while I'm happy eating a pork bowl for a few hundred yen, maybe rich people don’t know that experience at all. And there’s also the reverse of that. There are various people in the world, so thinking about learning about other cultures, I want to try listening to what they have to say. Up until now, I haven’t had any interest in that at all, right? [laughs]
Mayuyu, what do you think of MIlky and Paruru?
Mayuyu: Up until now, Paruru has been an idol with an anti-social character, and I think she’s been solidifying that all this time. It feels really natural. I think it feels like the breadth of AKB48 has grown a little more.
Mayuyu, you’re a fan of idols, so what do you think of Paruru’s character?
Mayuyu: She’s really living in a way that makes it seem like she doesn’t care. It’s not limited to her attitude, but the whole atmosphere she gives off is different and really charming. If I could be Paruru for one day, I’d spend the whole day enjoying having that anti-social attitude [laughs].
Milky: I want to do it toooooo! [laughs]
Mayuyu: Milky is an idol who’s always smiling, bright and cheerful, but I haven’t I haven’t really met her much before now. But I respect her for having a very strong heart and never being intimidated by her seniors. Some of the things she’s said to me today have been really bold considering I’m her senior who’s been in AKB48 since the start. She’s a wonderful idol. She keeps a tight grip on the hearts of her fans. This is something she was born to do.
Mr Okada: Paruru, you said you thought Mayuyu was walking the path of a true idol. What part of Mayuyu’s appearance do you want the most?
Paruru: Her face. I want it!
Mayuyu: That’s… I’m so ugly… [ashamed face]
Mr Okada: You’d have Mayuyu’s face with your current personality?
Paruru: Yes, that’s how I want it [smiles brightly]
Everyone: [uncontrollable laughter]
