Count on Me: Part 1/4That night, there was a big storm. The rain pounded on the windows, but a fist on the door.
Something in my heart told me it would be you.
And there you stood, soaking wet. Not only by rain but tears as well. I asked no questions, just let you in. You removed your shoes and collapsed onto the floor. Sobbing, you reached for me, looking up at me with pink-rimmed eyes. I held you tightly, my clothes becoming soaked.
We sat there for hours, not speaking. Just embracing. Your cries gradually slowed, your breath calmed. I rubbed your back and whispered words of comfort. You looked at my face and I knew it was time to talk about what had happened. But first, I cleaned you up.
30 minutes later, we sat tucked in my bed. Both of us were freshly bathed and wore warm pajamas. I quietly waited for you to begin. Taking a breath, you began your story.
I knew it was her fault.
You had caught her with none other than her best friend. All you wanted was some time with her and this is what you got. Your girlfriend straddling another, kissing her furiously, running her hands through jet-black hair. You said all you could do was stare. Your heart broke right before your eyes. She tried to follow you as you left, telling you it wasn’t what it appeared. She warned you not to go out in this weather. You ignored it all, pretending that this one girl, who was once your life, did not exist. That her voice was nothing but a draft from outside.
As you spoke, I could feel my heart shatter. She promised that she’d care for you. That you would always be loved and appreciated. She said she’d never hurt you. But I was a fool to believe that lie. She just used you for her own selfish needs. Capturing your fragile heart in the process. It was my fault you were hurt so badly.
You were crying again. Tears streamed down your creamy skin as you told of your heartbreak. I pulled you into an embrace and buried my head in your shoulder. Tears emerged from my eyes as you clung to me, like a small child.
“It hurts so bad”, you whispered. “I know”, I replied. Yes, I knew how it felt. As soon as I discovered your relationship. The scraping at every ounce of being, the feeling of inadequacy. I knew the feeling well. I would never let you know about the way you made me feel.
You were the one in need. Our relationship ensures that I will be there. No matter what, you can come to me. And it is 100% true. I will always be here to smile and ease away the pain. I honestly want to be the one you looked to for comfort at any cost. The one who holds you, kisses you and makes you feel loved. Maybe I am but not in the way I’d like.
But no matter, this is my true job. To pick up the pieces.
