Title: Official Nintendo 3DS Thread
Post by: Ericks on April 20, 2007, 06:03:47 AM
Being the fool I am I never realised how great the DS actually is until last week when I was playing on my friends. One word, Wi-Fi! I now own one myself as of this week and was surprised when I couldn't find a thread like this anywhere. I love playing games, and I am always wanting to play games with the guys and girls from JPH!P. This couldn't be any simpler or more fun than with a DS and I have been playing with Shinora a lot recently but no one else on IRC seems to either have a DS or be around to join in the fun. This is a roll call!

If you have a DS then you can proudly claim it here. If you want to take part in some JPH!P Wi-Fi fun then make yourself known so we can all get together! It would definitely be cool to get some more people on because for a start, me and Shinora need two more people so we can play Mario Karts!

Also, any general DS talk, news, information, help, etc will be welcome in this thread.

I guess i'll break the ice with the DS chat.  Being the nerd that i am  :glasses:, the up coming pokemon games (diamond/pearl) has been pretty huge.  especially the wifi battles, can't get any better than that~.  Don't be shy guys and gals, drop a msg here or come on by the jph!p chat and we can have some intense fun  :wahaha:

I was actually going to mention Pokemon Diamond/Pearl but then forgot so good thing you brought it up! haha

I have played the Japanese version but only so far as choosing my starting Pokemon and leveling it up a bit. The last Pokemon RPG I played was Silver so I don't know what I've missed between that and Diamond/Pearl but the new version is pretty awesome. I heard something about being able to only wi-fi against people who are on your friends list. If that's true it kind of limits the actual wi-fi battles you'll have seeing as you need to A) get friend codes from people first and B) wait for someone to come online. Does anyone know the facts on this?

The Tetris DS looks fun. I'm not sure about tetris games since the only one I have is for gameboy... regular. I think there's the drop function in the DS one, which makes it a whole lot more fun... that and I don't have to take out my graphing calculator every time I want to play tetris.

Okay, guys & gals -- I'm a HUGE DS user. We need a thread where we can list all our friend codes for all our games and add each other to our friends lists. Should we do it here or start a new thread?

I'm at work right now, but I'll jump on later from home and list my codes for all the wi-fi multiplayer games.

Can't wait to play!!

I can't play Wi-Fi with my DS, unfortunately! I have a wireless router at home but try as I might, it just doesn't seem to work :(

Regardless, I think the best games for it are Phoenix Wright, New Super Mario Bros, Zoo Keeper, 42 All-Time Classics and Elite Beat Agents. Of course there are others, but I haven't played them so far. The fact that it can play GBA games as well is very sexy (FF Tactics Advance FTW!).

If people want to add their friend codes here then I will update the first post and make a list. That way we can keep everything in one thread.

Yeah SITS, I've probably played Tetris the most out of the whole DS library of games, especially on Wi-Fi. It rocks. lol

shit... the game was my sister's boyfriend's game and he has it now... so that means no wi-fi for me unless I buy a game >_>

Tetris friend code:

Play it online a lot, would be great to get regular people to play against instead of random strangers.  Just added Marco.

Also play Mario Kart online sometimes but not nearly as often.  I'll dig the game out later to find my friend code for it too.

Even though the game has been out for some time, I like it alot. Though the missions annoy me a little, since it's all in japanese.  ???

Why is everyone getting Diamond?! I went to the local Target yesterday and they were sold out of Diamond but had a couple Pearls left... but I wanted Daimond... I would've went somewhere else but it was cheaper over there than the other stores...

There's 2 games on my most wanted list at the minute. Both logic puzzle games, the first is Picross (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=75026) and the second is Slitherlink (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=74357). Both look like my sort of thing (Sudoku in Brain Training took over my life for a brief moment in time), but there's no Western release date for Slitherlink at the moment. Seems it might be import-friendly though.

I got a DS Lite recently but I have yet to get a touch screen protector.

You guys have any advice or recommendations on what to get?

I'm thinking of getting the Hori Liquid Crystal Filter (http://www.play-asia.com/paOS-13-71-b7-49-en-15-liquid%2Bcrystal%2Bfilter-70-196x.html) at the moment, any comments on that?

I don't use one at all, have had my lite for about a year now.  No scratches/screen damage, although one of the actual hinges is damaged from too much time spent in pockets.  Screen is still perfect.

Pokemon was FINALLY released in the UK! I love it!

As do a great number of people it seems. This week's all-format chart here in the UK shows that Pokemon Diamond is at No.1, seeing off competition from Transformers and Harry Potter games. It is also the fastest selling DS game ever (though don't know if that is for the UK only, or ever ever).

For a Pokemon virgin like myself, what's the difference between Diamond and Pearl and is it worth the money?

I'm NOT a pokemon virgin, but I have the same question about them being worth their money. Mainly because I've only played the really old school Pokemon games... and I became re-addicted and I'm looking for something to feed that.  :D

Wow, you wern't a fan when it was really big? Like when pokemon red and blue came out for the original gameboy?

The difference is that both games have some different pokemon, so you if you wanted to collect all the pokemon, you'd have to trade, but this has wifi so its now so much easier to trade, and you can battle online too!

For the people who only played the originals, GO GET THIS GAME! All the stuff you wanted to do in the original game, is now in this game.  It's bringing so much oldschool memories back to me, but with all these cool new features. It's amazing, GO GET IT!

^I disagree. I bought Diamond, because I haven't played a Pokemon games since Gold and Silver. But the gameplay just feels tired out. You'll probably enjoy it through a few cities and then lose interest. Nothing really changed. So now instead of scrolling the moves you use the touch screen and their's the Poketch apps, which I feel are useless except for the item finder one. The game needs to be reformulated somehow.

I've only recently noticed that my PSP is getting no love from me whatsoever! Though I imagine that will change when FF Tactics and GOW : Chains Of Olympus are released. Still, the DS is so much easier to carry around and is more suitable for portable play IMO.

Puzzle League looks really interesting, and according to some reviews deserved to be high up there in the premier league of DS puzzlers, so I might end up getting that soon. And I've been thinking over Hotel Dusk for some time now. On one hand, I hear it's got a great story, interesting features and obviously the graphics are great. On the other, I hear it can be very frustrating to play through. Can anyone recommend the purchase?

I've only had it a day but Puzzle Quest is seriously addicting. The story is so cliched, but it doesn't really matter, the gameplay is the star here. Mixing and RPG with Bejewelled-style gameplay is a dangerous combination. XD

I'm currently tackling Oni mode in Taiko no Tatsujin (with minimal progress!), and I'm also hooked on Jump Ultimate Stars. To think that one game alone could fit so much awesomeness.

I sure hope it is 'cause that's the only way we'll be getting Gyakuten Saiban 4.

That's already been confirmed. I saw the cover a while ago... Phoenix-less.

Dragon Quest and Rogue Galaxy developer Level 5 has revealed its new football role-playing game for DS.

The news spilled from a press conference held in Tokyo yesterday, translated by IGN, where its upcoming line-up was unveiled.

It's called Inazuma Eleven, and it follows the adventures of you and your high school soccer team as you captain them from the bottom of the table to the top - trouncing your educational rivals along the way, as you might expect. (http://www.eurogamer.net/article.php?article_id=82377)

Sounds awesome! And it's made by Level-5 too

If you have a wireless network at home you can connect with that. If not, then you must buy like a USB thing, don't remember where i saw it though

usb wifi adapters shouldn't be too hard to find, most video game online stores should have them.

But I think buying a wireless router would be a better investment

BUMP.

Two questions:

a.) Has anyone tried out Professor Layton and the Curious Village?
b.) Is it any good?

It looks really, really cute, but obviously I don't want to spend money on a game based on that alone.

me-sa sweeety-sa has-sa DS-sa! I is have teh gaimez
Harvest Moon DS
Pokemon Diamon (Cause Diamonds are a girls best friend)
Lost in Blue (too hard and monotonous to be considered a game. I'd rather call it a chore)
Animal Crossing (of course)
Nintendogs (I WAS YOUNG! I NEEDED THE MONEY! I mean I was young I didn't know any better)
The Urbz Sims in the city (KAWAII!~ I already finished it twice...in one year. WHich says a lot cause I don't play a lot! Or ever...)

The one I've been playing the most is HM. I got real far, like fourth year or something and majorlyy fucked up by dropping it and resetting it when I wwas saving. I ended up losing it all so now I started over. Have every intention of taking advantage of the Million dollar glitch. But sadly I forgot how to get a fishing rod and it's Summer :'( At least I make a living by selling grass to Van and give my woman sum of my juice...that sounded pervy and illegal but it's what I do.....

I meen green grass and other weeds and stuff.....I just keep digging my own grave here. There are these grasses you can pick up lying around town. And it sells for like a hundreed G (Gold coins. Dem ppl luv that grass! Oh crap! I did it again!) Anyway. I sell that to this guy you can rip of if you're really really good at gamblilng I guess.... He names a price and you don't exactly haggle, as much as wait untill the price he gives is good enough. You'll see how annoying this is if you play it.

Anyway. That is all good and  all but I only bring in like a good ten K's a day every once in a blue moon and I really wanna get married soon and the only way to do that is to use the cheat so I can get heaps of money so I can afford to bring back the lil guys. So can anyone tell me how to get the fishing rod please?

I'm just wondering if anyone has played the game Lunar Knights? Hideo Kojima made this game, which is similar to Boktai, by using sunlight/lunar light, but this doesn't have the solar panel, like Boktai had. I have to say about this game CASKET ROCKET IS AWESOME!

Just picked up Castlevania: Order of Ecclesia and that shit it fuuuuuuuuuuun. I played a few other Castlevanias and loved them and this one doesn't seem any different. I like the Glyph system so far. I skipped Portait of Ruin (Gonna have to pick that up sometime), but compared to Dawn of Sorrow, I like this one more. I didn't like the weapon system in that one and I wasn't too keen on the anime art.

I've been looking for some other games for DS. The last time I played was Animal Crossing back in August (My house is probably filled with roaches). I was thinking maybe Metal Slug 7 or even giving The World Ends with You a shot after Tuffty mentioned it in the Best Games thread. I'm not a huge fan of RPGs (Though I don't hate them either), the character looks lame and the art doesn't excite me, but the idea of the fashion fighting system sounds kinda interesting, aside from it being trendy fashion. I'm thinking of picking it up once I get some mo' money.

A while ago I saw screenshots of an upcoming (at least for europe, maybe it's been released in other regions already) JRPG for DS.
The thing is I can't remember the title and it was a game I wanted to keep an eye on.
The only thing I can remember from one screenshot is there were giant pieces of (strawberry?)cakes!!!
I don't know if they were enemies or part of an attack/magic move.
Anyone ideas?

edit: I found it! I remembered there was something about music in the title and BAM here it is: Rhapsody - A Musical Adventure!
And for anyone wondering about the cakes

Ouendan.  None of which I have yet to complete, though, I think I am close to the end of Doki Doki Majo Shinpan 2 Duo.  I also have 3 other cartridges for the DS, Bartender DS, Sommelier DS and Saketakumi DS.  These three however, I have not explored yet.

That looks pretty cool. When I started reading it, I was hoping that the camera would be the biggest addition so hopefully the regular DS Lite's price would drop. The DS Lite wasn't enough for me to get rid of my original DS, but I may get the DSi when it comes out...if I got the cash.

I don't think I'm going to get a DSi because they took away the backward compatibility. IMHO, that was a lame move. I guess taking pictures with it or whatever is cool... but I imagine most people already have phones that do that, if not a camera. I'm a big fan of GBA games, so that was a major turn-off for me.
Title: Re: Official Nintendo DS Thread
Post by: arun.yothin on January 19, 2009, 03:51:52 AM
Whoa. I missed the part about backward compatibility. I still have my GBA though. I'll probably end up passing on the DSi since I won't be able to rationalize buying another DS when my old one works fine. I probably wouldn't be able to afford it anyway with stuff I NEED to buy this year.

I'm looking for some good side-scrolling action-type games. I like the Casltevanias and one Metroid I played. I have Astro Boy and enjoyed it for a couple of playthroughs, though a little bit difficult sometimes. I'm thinking about Metal Slug 7. I heard some complaints about being one-player, but I don't know anyone else who plays, so that's not a big deal for me.

Anyone got any suggestions?

I love The World Ends With You :D

Finally got round to completing it today after intentionally putting it off so I could get as many pins/items etc as possible. Great ending to it full of plot twists etc but I felt at the end it was sort of left unfinished, not in a open for a sequel kind of way, but just with the story itself.

So there I was happy that I finally completed it when it's revealed at the end, that there's more playability after the game has ended! Each chapter of the story can now be accessed at any point, and each chapter contains several sub-quests that need completing and if they are completed, then a secret report is unlocked for that chapter, listing the events of the chapter in detail that should clarify any questions raised during the chapter. If you collect all secret reports then something special is unlocked, but who knows what it could be? On top of that, there's an all-new alternate chapter to play through and complete where story events are taken slightly less seriously (Knowing that the main protaganist Neku was perhaps too emo they have him saying in this chapter "No! Mustn't let my inner emo get loose!!" XD) but it contains all new pins and items to collect. On top of all this, all of my inventory/pins/LVL's etc are transferred across so I haven't lost anything in the process.

So instead of finishing it, you could say my playtime has become greatly extended as a result :w00t:

I looked at some vids and stuff after reading about how you loved it so much. I'm not into the art much and the story doesn't sound interesting to me, but I still want to give this game a go. I need to save my money though and I still haven't finished Castlevania. I'm at the last battle, but I wanted to get some more stuff before the last fight.

The Legend Of Zelda: Spirit Tracks Coming To The DS

Today's Nintendo keynote at the Game Developers Conference ended up bearing Zelda fruit after all, with the announcement of the tentatively titled The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks for the Nintendo DS.

The new game, which looks to play a bit like The Phantom Hourglass, features dungeon maps on the top screen, gameplay on the bottom screen, and a bit of a fascination with trains. In the trailer shown at the keynote, which we will have available for you shortly, Link is seen acting as the engineer for a train with a cannon mounted on the locomotive.

The Legend of Zelda: Spirit Tracks will be available this year for the Nintendo DS. Exciting, isn't it? Hopefully we'll get to use the DS microphone to make choo choo noises.

Just discovered the video game thread here...  :mon hi: Hello...

YES, I recently got Rhythm Heaven just so I could get all the little jokes and dialogue I couldn't understand in Rhythm Tengoku Gold.  The English version is pretty identical to the original.  I was just kinda bummed that they also re-did the songs in English.   It's also kinda weird hearing the Idol game in English. I'm gettin' a little worried. A few days ago I started up Castlevania and got an error mesage saying it couldn't load. It worked after I restarted that day. Just now my DS froze at the start up screen. After restarting it, it said there was no card inserted...twice. It's working now. Ecclesia is still fun, but I want to find a new game. Imported a game recently from America that I figured I should mention. It's an RPG based in modern-day Tokyo where cool-clothed teenagers have just 7 days to survive against monsters and their own certain doom. Huh? Sound familar? No, it's not The World Ends With You, but a new entry in the Shin Megami Tensei series, Devil Survivor:

Devil Survivor (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=b6Nx9vyLsyk#lq-lq2-hq-vhq)

As far as I know it's a new style of play for the MegaTen series, as it's more of a SRPG than a straight RPG. You control your character's sprites just like in FF Tactics or Disgaea, but the twist here is that your fights play out like an old school, first-person version of Dragon Quest. The battles are quite addicting and the story/cast is interesting enough to keep you playing. Every decision you make affects how much time is spent on the clock, and you only have so many hours to work with in a day, so any decision you make can have an impact on the story and determine the outcome of supposedly several different endings, so there's enough replayability to come back.

Should check it out if anyone's looking for an RPG.

WOO peeps this new DS

It's dubbed the "DSi XL", and although Japanese consumers can get their hands on it next month, it won't launch in the US until early 2010. Nintendo of America has yet to announce U.S. pricing, but the machine's expected to be more expensive than the DSi, which will remain on sale at its current $169.99 price.

I was convinced and bought a 3DS at launch, but I feel I haven't played around with it enough yet xD;

I got Nintendogs + Cats, which is adorable and great fun. A good step up from the original, and a nice step forward for the franchise. I hope someday to see Nintenbunnies. .___.;

Face Raiders is my favourite thing ever, and it leaves me hopeful about the whole DSWare/DSDownload Store thing that opens up in May (as far as I know). I hope to see lots of wacky little mini-game type things! :D

The 3D effect took my by surprise, because I was sure I was just going to switch it off. But I haven't. I'm not blasting it on full effect, either, but I like what it does to the gaming experience. I'm sure I'll also play around with the possibilities of taking 3D pictures and such more in the future.

I've already loaded up my SD card with the only demo I'll ever need to convince PSP-boys that DS is the way to go... xD; 3D images of Amano Ai 8D What's surprising is that whilst Nintendo's stuff (that I've seen so far, at least) mostly seems to disappear into the screen. These images jump out at you.

Oh my god, I'm now actually excited about the StreetPass function in the 3DS. I thought it sounded cool, but wasn't getting my hopes up, because people here in Norway rarely take their gaming outside. I don't think I've ever seen someone play their DS outside here (.. apart from friends that I hang out with, lawl). I never really understood these kind of features (a lot of DS games have similar features, Pokemon Black and White as the most recent examples), until I went to Tokyo last summer. In Akihabara you'd find huge areas designated to people playing DS. You could go there just to meet up with other players, or you could get "guests" for your games. Most people showed up hoping for the latter. We joined in by playing Dragon Quest 9 and canvassing for guests. bie got 40 guests for his game in about an hour. We both maxed out the level of the inn (I realise this won't make sense if you haven't played Dragon Quest 9 xD), and we collected tons of treasure maps. Seeing how these kinds of features are meant to work made me sad that there's no culture for this kind of thing amongst gamers or game stores in Norway :/

And that's why the StreetPass function left me a bit miffed when I first learnt about it. I think it's an incredibly cool way to make gaming a more social experience, but I just know that lots of gamers won't really get to use it because people don't usually take their sleeping DSs with them when they go outside.

So~ imagine my surprise when I opened my 3DS during lunch at work today, and found 2 people waiting for me in MiiPlaza. Say whaaaat? @_@ That's amazing! I've walked around with my DSLite on, walking around Oslo canvassing for guests for DQ9 for hours and hours and never encountered a single other player, but 10 minutes on the underground to work.. and there are now two complete strangers in my 3DS D:!

Then later, I encountered yet another person! And that person was playing Nintendogs, so I got a gift from him/her in Nintendogs as well! I was so thrilled! xD;

... though I also learnt the painful way that you'll have to do the MiiQuests/PuzzleQuest/Whatever the heck those games are called in the same sitting as when you register the new arrivals :/ the new arrivals won't count the next time you open the software >_< (though they'll still be in your MiiPlaza).

I just hope this wasn't a one shot kind of thing, I hope I'll be able to stumble across one or two other people tomorrow :D!

... this also made me think about the info I put into my MiiProfile. I had a moment during lunch today where I completely flailed thinking "omg, omg two random dudes have my Mii in their DSs D: whaaaat... wait, what does my greeting say again? Shiiiit D:".

Have you guys had any luck collecting people in StreetPass?

New Nintendo 3DS and XL announced for Japan

Yesterday we had a Nintendo Direct in Japan dedicated solely to the Nintendo 3DS. The biggest announcement from that Nintendo Direct is that two brand-new models of Nintendo 3DS will be hitting the Japanese market on October 11. These models will not be available in Europe and North America until 2015.

The biggest change to the design is that both the consoles are a bit bigger, feature a new C-stick analog stick, new colored buttons, microSD support, and better battery, better 3D support, and the ability to switch covers. Here’s a quick list of features:

    better 3D
    second stick
    NFC built-in
    coloured buttons
    more buttons
    better battery (up to 7h)
    now compatible with microSDCard
you can back up data on your PC via wireless.
browser improved, now works with HTML5
CPU improved, makes browsing Miiverse / eShop much faster.
you can switch designs now (covers)
    4.88 inch screen 3DS LL
    3.88 inch screen 3DS OG
    ABXY Buttons color coded

Aside from the new hardware that features several improvements, Nintendo also announced that a port of Xenoblade Chronicles is being worked on for the Nintendo 3DS and it will be available in the future. Here’s a quick gallery of screenshots taken from the Nintendo Direct. Expect more information about this new model of Nintendo 3DS as we move into the holiday season.

Smaller New 3DS Finally Coming To North America

Word from the ongoing GameStop Expo today is that Nintendo will finally release the smaller version of its New 3DS hardware in North America, responding to consumer demand and apparently making good on a hint the company gave us at E3 in June.

Nintendo rapidly followed that with a press release making it all official, though for now we’re only seeing it mentioned in the context of an Animal Crossing: Happy Home Designer bundle. The bundle will sell for $219.99 starting Sept 25.
