Touching story this:

Quote

American swimmer Eric Shanteau, who has testicular cancer but postponed his treatment to compete in the Olympics, did not qualify for the men's 200m breaststroke final.

But he was presented with a gold medal yesterday by China's Cancer Rehabilitation Club in recognition of the way he has inspired sufferers with his refusal to be daunted by the disease.

"In the people's mind, you have already won a gold medal of lifetime significance," the club's head, Yuan Zhengping, told Shanteau in front of 200 cancer patients.

Shanteau, who starts treatment next week, was invited back for the 2010 World Expo in Shanghai. "I will look forward to that day by day and meet you there," he said.

Followed by this little arrogant, stupid outburst that you just couldn't make up:

Quote
Jennifer Lopez has reportedly claimed that she is surprised by all the attention eight-time Olympic winner Michael Phelps is receiving.

According to a source at Good Morning America, the singer thought her efforts in training for triathlon were greater than Phelps's swimming gold medal haul.

After filming a TV interview, she apparently said "she couldn't understand why everyone is talking about that swimmer."

The source added: "She couldn't come up with [Michael] Phelps' name, and then she yammered on about how she was the one training for a triathlon just six months after giving birth, and how that was the big story right now, not 'the swimmer'."

Lopez's triathlon will raise funds for Los Angeles Children's Hospital.

A celeb training for triathlon is greater than winning 8 gold medals in the Olympics?

The BMX was pretty good to watch, a nice little addition to the line-up of the Olympics. The women's final produced the most heartache as British cyclist Shanaze Reade was a very close second, only to crash on the final turn and to add injury to insult, looked like she injured her arm and wrist.

Also want to give a shout out to the unsung hotties of the Olympics - those girls that walk out with the competitors holding a sign displaying which country the competitor is from. if anyone knows the correct term for them, that would be great XD Always very pretty

^^ Hell yeah! The hotties with the signs definitly needs some recognition. Who are these lovely ladies?! Every damn sport is worth watching just to see those beauties trip around. Lots of love to them! They're the real heroines of the Olympics.. maybe not but.

And yes! BMX! I haven't really watched the sport much, if any before the Olympics. It's fast paced, intense and fucking brutal. As Tuffty mentioned, there was a pretty nasty fall during the women's final. Didn't get better right after when the dudes were up and 3 out of 8 cyclers fell. Looked fucking nasty. Hope BMX is here to stay. I like it.

The beachvolley is over. No surprise Walsh / May got their gold. One mistake and you're done against them. Tian Jia and Wang Jie did play good tho. They could've done even better but 21 - 18, 21 - 18 is an Ok result imo. Not one set lost for Walsh and May, says it all Congrats. Also congrats to Wang who earns my "body-of-the-tournament" prize. Tall, nice ass and that perfect tan..

Looked to be a thriller in the men's final aswell, but come 3rd set it wasn't even funny anymore. Dalhausser and Rogers made sure they gots the Gold. Dalhausser's blocks. Wow! And 2x USA good job.

USA vs Argentina, Basketball, coming up in less than an hour. I don't think it'll be anything but american domination. You never know tho. That's why this is sports. Anything can happen, anytime. Like Jamaica dropping the stick in the womens 4x100m relay finals, just like USA did in the qualifiers. :O

Because he's won medals, and you have't won jack.  Now get your ass back in the kitchen and make me some pie!

Sign bearers??

Also the cheerleaders that were round the track when the athletes all walked in, but someone's sure to have mentioned them already!

I read a similar story a couple of weeks ago.

One of the UK divers is only 14, but they've made no secret of it, always mentioning it in reports, look wow, he's only 14 etc...  Are the age restrictions different for gymnastics and diving then?

^ Yarly, and I remember it being said at the opening ceremony that the youngest competitor was 13 years old, can't remember who they were representing though.

Korea beat Cuba to win the Baseball Gold!  and...
For the South Koreans, this victory provided a big bonus, as 14 of their players had already secured a medal and an exemption from mandatory military service with Friday’s 6-2 semifinal victory over Japan. By law, the South Korean government exempts male athletes who earn any medal in the Olympics from the approximately two years of required duty.

Most were happy to just beat Japan.

BEIJING -- Cuba's Angel Matos deliberately kicked a referee square in the face after he was disqualified in a bronze-medal match, prompting the World Taekwondo Federation to recommend that he be banned for life.

Last day at the disco! ...and Kobe and the boys did what they was sent out to do. Fucking awesome.

Ending Ceremony is on right now. I feel sad that this have to end. It's been almost 3 weeks of fantastic sports and sport efforts. Seeing back on what has been makes me a bit sad. This have been the most exciting and spectacular Olympics that i've been able to follow closely. And not only that. I don't think there'll be any Olympics in the near future, that's even close to surpassing the spectacle that we've witnessed these weeks.

So it's time to wait another 4 years for the London Olympics. I'm looking forward to it; the sports, the sports- men/women, the efforts, the joy, the sadness and all the ASS!! :shakeit:
