Title: Nameless Nights, 04
Post by: inDeceit on March 13, 2008, 08:57:19 PM
Will update as and when, and probably according to the responses I get :P
Period era A/U with MM 3rd-6th gen ;D and more. Wanna predict the pairings?

Anyway, enjoy.

Episode 0 : Kiss the rain.

Wolves howled from a distance, roused by the rare full moon of a nameless night.

The beasts’ rotating cries soon turned into whispers, then echoes, and eventually replaced by the crashing of merciless waves beneath her feet. How far and how blindly had she ran through the haunting woods, to end up by the barren cliffs with no other openings left for escape.

Cornered now by her approaching enemy and impending doom, what choices did she have?

Her enemy did not speak to announce their presence, but she could hear the rattling of steel from the depths of the woods. She could just imagine the blade glimmer under the moonlight and the thought of blood, which stained the same edges made her own veins turn cold - Blood of people she shared her life with, drawn from the very person she trusted her heart with. Remembering how cruel training used to be, that was really nothing compared to now.

Her legs froze, the soles of her sandals becoming one with the muddy earth.

Where were her weapons when she needed it?

Where were the results of her daily toils?

Where did her guts run off to at a time like this?

Her character, her attitudes, everything…

She felt them all disintegrating into nothing.

She was afraid.

She heard the leaves ruffle, and the smooth sound of sliding metal rang against her ears like a shrill cry. A long shadow began to advance towards her.

“Why are you doing this?”

An enormous crack appeared in the sky suddenly, illuminating the cliffs, as would the sun. The light revealed her opponent’s face; so familiar and once so gentle, it was now maniacal as if possessed.

”Haven’t we treated you well?”

Like an explosion, the vast sky behind her flashed brightly, capable of blinding an average person temporarily. The armed individual was silent, treating the pleas like a passing wind, and their weapon held loosely to their side with no intention of attacking… yet.

”Wasn’t there something between us? Don’t you remember anymore?”

Her pursuer just kept coming closer, and she wanted to back away but the risk of falling over into the mercilessly sea wasn’t part of her plan to survive. The lack of any reaction from the other frightened her as if the heart of her enemy did not exist anymore.

drip

She felt something cold fall against her face, then breaking apart into something wet.

Was she crying?

No, that’s not right.

drip… drip…

More began to land on her, threatening to enter her tired eyes, gradually sending shivers throughout her body. It was raining, and she wants to run.

“I remember.”

She couldn’t run. She was less than an arm’s length away from the enemy now.

And she didn’t want to flee anymore too, because of that one response.

She felt herself being pulled into the enemy’s embrace suddenly.

”That’s why…”

The whispers albeit ominous, calmed her down and gave her the slightest of hope.

”...My parting gift. I loved you.”

Soft lips crashed against her own without warning. It taste salty, from the rain that had slipped between them discreetly, and it felt emotionless. A farewell was all she could gather from the contact, until an immediate pain destroyed all thoughts in her mind. Lips then parted like they had never touched.

It surged through her body, as though struck by the lightning from behind by surprise. She felt the pain, and the object lodged inside her. There was that rattling again. Something was being pulled out from within her slowly. It was slicing her from the inside and a cold scream escaped from her lips, unable to be restrained any longer.

She stumbled back carelessly, giving momentum to the withdrawing sword that pierced through her by the hands of the person who stole a kiss from her. She struggled to keep her balance, clawing at her attacker in hopes of pulling the other down with her if it shall come to that. In the process, she felt her nails graze across what seems like flesh, easily having created a cut on that surface without her knowing.

The last thing she saw were closed eyes and an expression of shame.

One clumsy step after another until she felt herself dive back, falling…

Plunging…

Sinking…

Drowning.

Before long, her consciousness was lost to the currents around her.

~  ~  ~  ~

“Ojou-sama!”

The relentless crack of thunder was followed by an anxious cry that echoed down the hall as an attendant, clad in only her nightdress and a shawl, burst into the room holding a candle lit lamp that could extinguish any second now. She immediately ran to a corner to lend fire to the room’s candles.

Once the room had some decent lighting, the attendant saw her respected lady sitting up from her bed, breathing haggard and uneven. The young lady was clutching to her blanket tightly, her arms doused in cold sweat.

“What happened!? I heard your scream.”

“I-it’s… It’s nothing. I just had a nightmare.”

The woman gradually regained her cool and the first difference she noticed around her was the downpour outside her window. She sighed as it was also raining in her dreams. She looked back up at her worried servant with a weak smile.

“I’m alright now, you may leave.”

“That is fine Ojou-sama. I’ll stay until you’ve fallen asleep first.”

“Then… Thank you.”

She appreciated the company. Relieved from the previous scare, she lied back down onto her futon and pulled the blanket up to her neck. It took awhile, but she eventually did manage to fall asleep again.

Could be, with a whole lot more of things that wouldn't make sense eventually. D:

Episode 01 : If luck shall have you.

The cries of seagulls echoed throughout the port nearby. By the sandy coast that ran through the harbor, a peasant leisurely strolled along while hauling a large fishing net behind her. She wore a contented smile; full of peace, fulfillment and overall happiness. Today would be a great day, she told herself. As always.

Beyond the shallow waters, there was an enormous boulder lodged into the seabed, it’s rough surface peaking from beneath the sea’s surface, wide enough to accommodate a few who wishes to rest on it.

“Saa, let’s see what we’d be able to catch today.”

The peasant, now seated crossed legged on the rock like an old man- lacking grace, demure, shyness, and everything else that made a woman appealing-, fumbled through her large pockets in search of bait.

“Baka.”

She stopped suddenly and laughed out, remembering that she used a net and that required no bait all. Brushing the lint from her gloved hands, she stood up clumsily with her tool in hand and skillfully threw it into the sea with a tight grip remaining on the corners of the web.

From where she was, she returned to her seat and waited patiently for something, or anything to drift into her fishing net. From a distance, she watches the foreign ships from the nearby port come and go. Time passed slowly, but the fisherwoman did not mind. After all, having the liberty to waste time like this was a pleasure for her.

~ ~ ~ ~

A warrior without her weapon and armor wasn’t worth anything. Earlier before, these armors were long removed to show some hint of respect within a dignified person’s home. It would be unbecoming to be venturing the halls doused in blood after all, but she felt uncomfortable like this, almost as if stripped to her bare skin and then abandoned.

She stared long and hard at her own two eyes through the mirror gifted by an ambassador of unknown lands.

Just staring, clear of thoughts and feelings. When she finally gave in and blinked, she made a small discovery.

Not until now had she noticed that it was there. A scar an inch long bore into her cheeks, an injury that hardly inflicted any pain when caused. Lifting her slender fingers, the warrior touched the wound gently only to quickly retract her arm when there was a knock to her room.

She would not be found in such a vulnerable state.

“Yoshizawa-sama. They’re waiting.”

Coughing a reply, Yoshizawa promptly straightened the hakama she wore over a kimono and slid open the doors, coming face to face with a suddenly timid steward. She looked down at the short man coldly, his existence meaning nothing to her. Putting on professional airs, she spoke politely.

“Please, lead the way.”

The quiet warrior was brought to a wide hall, surrounded by nothing with only an ankle-high table at the top center of the room.

“I am impressed!”

From behind came a sudden sarcastic remark, causing the warrior to turn around. Leaning against the doorway was a woman no older than her, dressed in a yukata with its length shortened to ease movement. The other appeared haughty, which made the warrior cringe.

“You finally got the guts to exterminate that clan.”

“I’m offended.”

“You’re so cold…Hitomi.” The rather scantily clad woman (what with having her thighs exposed and chest in need of more cloth to cover) narrowed her eyes at the warrior and advanced towards her in an affectionate way.

“And you’re still as shameless.” Hitomi turned around and made her way towards the table, refusing the other woman any chance of coming into physical contact with her.

“Years in that stupid house made you stoic, didn’t it?” The woman clenched her fist, offended by the rejection. Calming herself down, she quietly crossed the room and stood shoulder to shoulder beside the warrior.

“I believe that doesn’t concern you at all.”

“Do you think I care?”

“You never change.”

“Should I?”

The woman looked at Hitomi with a smirk, and the warrior herself shifted her glance to her companion with an almost unnoticeable smile. It was a friendly bicker, in the most unusual way.

“Do you know why we’re here?”

Hitomi adverted any further dwellings on the current topic and went to the point of her situation now. Her companion appeared thoughtful at first, and the given shrug made her lose hope of getting a proper answer.

“Shishou has a new assignment for you.”  The woman answered straightforwardly, much to Hitomi’s surprise.

“What kind?” Again, there was no beating around the bushes.

“Who knows.”

Hitomi eyed the documents she just noticed on the table, wondering what her new task could be. Her speculations were cut short by an unneeded interruption.

“Oh, I just remembered. Ojou-sama is anxiously waiting for you to meet her.”

The woman nudged her playfully with a grin, as though knowing a secret that only they both were aware of. That may very well be however.

“And she doesn’t like a cold unfeeling Yocchan, just so you know.”

Hitomi gave the woman a look of understanding, no other reaction present. She didn’t care the least about how the impression she gave people after all. Not anymore, at least.

~ ~ ~ ~

“K-Konkon!” The weak door made of straw was almost destroyed by the commotion displayed by the addressee, but that was the least of her concerns. She ran up to her housemate and grabbed her shoulder violently.

“Ah, Mako-chan. You brought back dinner- Eh?”  The other, better known as Konno, and was holding a wok and ladle froze at the sight of her worked up friend. “What happened? You look like you’ve seen something horrible.”

“Worse! Come, follow me!” Her friend dragged her out of the house and into the small courtyard they had.

Just by the entrance was the woman’s usual fishing net, with something entangled within it. A body, it would seem. Something so startling made Konno drop her utensils immediately.

”Hol- My god. Is that a corpse?”

Her friend nodded, eyes still wide open in surprise from when she first discovered it during her fishing trip.

“Ogawa Makoto! Why did you bring home a dead body?!” Discarding the normal pleasant personality, Konno started yelling at her friend like a distressed housewife. “We can’t eat that!”

“Konkon! I may like to eat but I’m not a cannibal!” Makoto rebutted, her friend’s scolding becoming her main concern as of now.

“Then why, Mako-chan, why? What made you bring that home?!” Konno pointed at the net, being a little overdramatic with her words.

“She’s alive.” The fisherwoman whispered cautiously into her companion’s ears, giving the lump under the web some shifty looks.

“You can’t be serious.” Konno gasped at the news, not at all convinced however. “Even the dried fishes out here looks more alive that that!”

“No, really. She’s still breathing. Check it out yourself.”

“This is ridiculous!” The more sensible of them both was ushered towards the apparently lifeless body and made to place a finger under the person’s nostrils. “Eeeww.”

“See! She’s breathing, isn’t she?!” Makoto repeated excitedly.

Much to Konno’s surprise, the body was indeed still alive as she could vaguely feel a slight rush of air brushing past her finger.

“You’re… You’re right! We have to bring her inside immediately!”

Hearing the command, Makoto quickly nodded and reached out for the corners of the net in attempt to drag the body back into the house.

“Mako-chan! Carry her! Ca-rry!” Konno made each syllabus clear and made the motion of lifting something up and hauling it over her shoulder to get her point across.

“Oh, OH! Right.” Realizing that dragging would probably kill the person faster, Makoto quickly lifted the body along with the net and with each heavy step, she tried her best to keep her balance until she’s back inside the house. Her housemate followed closely behind.

“Hey, Konkon. Why aren’t you helping me?” She stressed her words, having a hard time speaking and doing hard labor at the same time.

“It’s your catch. You should have the honor of carrying it.” Konno replied with a smile so genuine that it was almost scary. She then gave an encouraging pat to Makoto's empty shoulder and walked ahead, leaving her best friend behind with the load.

“Mou~!”

I'm curious... The woman Yossie meets could be Miki? Maybe Rika? Maki? So many options! It looks like they're old friends. And I want to know who's ojou-sama too...
It's funny to see Mako as a fisher, considering she played that part on Haromoni Theater
Keep up with the good job! :yep:

These are my first thought of who is who:
Yossy was the one who "killed" the girl in the first chapter
The "killed" girl is Takahashi
The girl who was with Yossy in the second chapter is Maki
Ojou-sama is Aya-cha

XD XD XD I know is crazy
Oh... and the story seems pretty interesting... keep the good work

nice chapter.. the Mako/Pon-chan bit realy cracked me up, they are so funny together...
I think that the girl they found is Ai-chan.
It realy fits for Yossi to be somekind of warrior, i don't think she would have been better in another kind of role.
The other girl who was mocking Yossi seems to be Maki (because of her clothing )..
anyway, you've updated realy quick, please continue doing so ...i mean as quick as you can :yep: 8)

Normally, I don't reply unless I'm updating but...

- Nope, Ai-chan's role isn't that big here.
- You've got Maki right. ;)
- I've not written Aya before, but who's playing 'Ojou-sama' is still pending from now until her debut lol. Depends really, who would you like it to be? XD

I have 3 fics under my belt, but I'll be trying my best to update. Better late than never, right?

PS : Love the new layout o.o

Me thinks the girl who dies in the start is Yoshi cause it says something about her missing her weapons when she needs it the most. That would mean that although the girl who was found was taken it by Makoto and Konkon neither of them could be the one that is the girl who dies in the start, ergo they are neither of the leads. Why couldnt they be the murderer? Because read closely to what the muurderee says to the murderer as she runs through the woods. So the killer in the start will have to be someone other than the already named characters. So my guess is that the girl who was fished is the murderer in the start and her name is.................................. well that I wont say because it will give away too much..... and the girl being killed in the start was Yoshi. Who maybe lives with Konkonk and Makoto..... Maybe they live together and thats why she says we took you in and took care of you. But I'm not going to reveal any more about my guesses cause I have a tendency of spoiling things for other people so Im gonna erase part of the above to confuse the ppl more. Mwahahahahahahahahaha

lol this is fantastic...I'm still cracking up from that last chapter XD  Reading the funny scene between Mako and Konkon made me realize how much I miss them...I hope they get to stick around for a few more chapters.

and I have to say this now after reading all the comments....I can't believe it's not Ai chan!

If this is more of a 3rd + 4th gen fic...maybe it's Rika  :O  but then again I'm still waiting for 6th gen to show up =D

Anyway, I guess Ai-chan will be appearing soon enough, eventually.

Episode 02: More than what they think.

It was somewhat breezy up here. To be shrouded by leaves and to rest upon a rough surface for hours on ends really started to rile up her temper. But she was a dignified lady, regardless of what anyone else would say and she chose to stay tolerant.

She’ll have something to vent all that frustration on anyway when the time is ripe. And right now, in front of her superior, being impatient would be a bad… bad idea.

“Goto-san… how much longer are we going to sit here?”

“Until a miracle happens, rookie.”

“I’m going to get a butt rash soon…”

“Thanks for the mental image, brat.”

“Sure. By the way, I heard Yoshizawa-sama came back.” The rookie- without much respect for her elder- adjusted to a squat beside the tree trunk for better movement if she intends to lean forward to take a better look at the path through the forest which they had been patiently keeping an eye on for the past hour or so.

“News sure travels fast. What’s it to you anyway, and why do you call her –sama instead?”

“Because I can.” The rookie answered bluntly. “I wondered why you wouldn’t take up her domestic assignment instead, since you’ve been slacking for some time now anyway.”

“Gutsy, aren’t we? Speaking to your superior like that. No wonder you’re still a rookie.”

“I don’t see any problems with being a rookie.” The younger of them both answered again, with the slightest of being intimidated by someone more powerful than her. “So?”

“Yoshizawa got the job of babysitting Ojou-sama, what do you think.” Goto gave in and entertained the rookie. It was no fun bantering with someone that wouldn’t play along.

“Ah… Better her than you then.”

“Smart. You’ll go far with brains like that.”

“Yet my brains still can’t figure out why we’re perched on a branch since the coming of noon.”

The path had been deserted for a better part of the day, without so much of a hint of anyone ever having gone through. It was quite a wasted effort just waiting like this, without any form of entertainment besides each other; the last thing either woman would want.

“We’re bandit watching.”

“Huh? But there are no bandits anywhere.”

“You’re right. But these are Shishou’s orders whether you like it or not.”

“Terada-sama wants us to sit here and wait for some petty thieves to appear? But we can do better than that!”

“I know! I’ve told him, but nooo…. he thinks these bunch of thieves are going to revolt against the magistrate or something.”

Both women went silent suddenly, something clicking inside them as they looked at each other knowingly.

“Believe it or not, I think you’ve just figured out why we’re wasting our lives here.”

The sound of pebbles cracking under a heavy carriage traveled to her sensitive ears, and the blurred figures in a distance was clear to her hawk-like vision. Their conversation ended there immediately.

“Shh, someone seems to be coming.”

~ ~ ~

“Konkon! I think you’re killing her!”

“What do you mean I’m killing her? And don’t shout! Someone might think we’re committing a crime in here.” Konno Asami yelled back at her unusually reactive friend. “I’m just reapplying herbs to her wound.”

“But... look at her face.” Makoto pointed anxiously at the unconscious form of her ‘catch’ before. “She’s wincing in pain. She’s in pain!”

“Well I can’t do anything if the herbs tend to sting naturally.”

“Can’t you be more gentle? That is a really deep wound she has.”

“I think it’ll leave a scar… And I AM being gentle!”

“You’re killing her. I know you are!”

“She might just die if you keep saying that, you know.”

“No way! I’ll keep quiet now. I promise.”

“Good. Be useful and see if she has any identification on her.”

Makoto gave her friend a salute and hurried to the pile of damp clothes they had removed from the person. She found some dead fishes, a heap of seaweed and some other sea creatures that got caught in the clothing but there wasn’t anything useful.

At least, Makoto didn’t think a gold plate with a name engraved in it was very important. Still, she thought it was better to show it to Asami at least.

“Do you think we can sell this?” The fisherwoman held the plate before her friend’s face.

“Sell what?” Asami lifted her head to look at the object. To see something so valuable and unfamiliar, she instantly snatched it away. “Definitely not! This isn’t ours.”

“Aww. What is it anyway?”

“I’m not sure. It’s too valuable for me to have ever seen it. It’s probably something important.”

“You sure we can’t sell it?”

“Don’t you dare, or you’re taking the floor tonight.”

”No, not the floor!”

“Then don’t even think about it.”

“Alright, alright. Hey, I think she’s waking up.”

I wonder who the rookie is.. The brat remark made me think about Gaki, but i can't see her talking to Gottsan like that, so perhaps hmmm Reina?
MaKonkon is so funny and adorable altogether, and the mystery half-dead girl is yet to be revealed...

The 'rookie' sounds like Reina to me.. kind of hinting her personality in the way she talks...
I'm really curious on who 'ojou-sama' is but have a gut feeling that its Mikitty...
and the unconscious girl is Rika.. or the other way around..  XD

As shit tends to find its way into my life, I'm really sorry for the delay. Your comments were encouraging, though... *laughs at your wrong guesses* Lol, just kidding. :P

Now, I present to you...

Chapter 03 : A changing situation.

“Hello stranger.”

Eyes met eyes but there seems to be something seriously disturbing about what she sees. Much to her dismay, she was feeling incredibly drained and groggy. Saving her desire to remove the sight before her with her fist, she stared back at the disturbingly happy expression with a frown, hoping that the face would understand the meaning behind it.

“Mako-chan, you’re scaring the guest.” Well, the face didn’t, but someone else did. Immediately after the scolding, the sight she felt displeased with was removed from before her.

“What are you getting so worked up for? I was just greeting her.” Makoto pouted and moved aside with her arms folded. It was natural to be upset, having been given lack of better treatment from her best friend since the arrival of their guest. Not that she was being the least useful to them both however. Overall, Makoto naively concluded that it was just fair like this anyway.

“Looking at someone with only a few centimeters of space between your faces isn’t called a greeting, Mako-chan. It’s creepy.”

“But Konkon don’t seem to mind it.”

“But that’s just what you think.” Konkon grinned secretively before sitting down beside the bedridden guest. “And how are you today?”

“Irritated” She grumbled, somehow unable to form any further coherent sentences both literally and mentally. Shutting her eyes tightly, she turns over in hopes of being left alone.

“She’s grumpy. Could you get me a wet cloth or something to clean her up?” Makoto instantly gave her best friend a salute and scurried off to gather what was needed. Meanwhile, Konno insisted on helping her guest up to a sitting position.

“Just let me be.” The person spoke, head tilted downwards as her eyes remained closed. She folded her arms over her stomach in attempt to protect herself from being touched.

“Aren’t you depressing today? Come on, we need to get you clean up.” Konno tugged at the person’s arms and took the wet cloth that Makoto had delivered and wiped down the grim covered limb. It was quite a struggle when the other insisted on having her arm back.

“Konkon, want me to hold her down for you?” Makoto offered happily, finally having a chance to be helpful. Before Konno could protest to the act of roughness, their guest had forcefully pulled back her arm and despite every cell in her body being uncooperative, she managed to hurry off from the bed and out of the first exit she sees. She would not stay to be ridiculed and handled like this.

The escape didn’t succeed as both peasants quickly heard a loud thud outside. Recovering from their surprise, they ran out to find the woman they had before saved now unconscious on the ground, blood seeping out from under her.

“Oh god, her wounds opened!”

“Don’t stand there and gap, help me carry her back in before she bleeds to death.”

~ ~ ~ ~

“Is it really alright like this?”

Hidden under a hood, a woman questioned with much uncertainty. Beside her was a girl of a smaller stature walking confidently with the least of worries in her hands.

“You know, I had expected more from you.” The younger girl looked up, her eyes shadowed by her own headdress but an adolescent frown was visible through the curve of her lips.

“I don’t understand.”

“My plan is foolproof. And you, my leader, have given us the permission to go through with it yet now you’re asking if it’s ‘alright’?” The girl crossed her arms and turned away from her leader to watch the road.

“I’m just afraid of the plan falling short.”

“Have more confidence in me, would you? And yourself.” She turned her head towards the elder and sighed. No response other than a defeated sigh came from the other, but even if there were a nod of agreement, it would nevertheless mean the same.

“Come on guys, keep alert and look out for anything suspicious.” That was something different that the young girl had not expected.

“That’s it.” The girl smiled proudly at her leader's sudden orders, feeling encouraged by the group’s spirited reply. “If we keep up the act, we’ll be able to return safely.”

“The loot here is important to the guild regardless. I wouldn’t want it to be undelivered after all that we’ve done to attain it. So I do trust you, it’s the only thing I can do now, right?”

“Thank you.” The girl intended to add something else, but a call from ahead caught her attention.

“Tanaka-sama!” It was a scout, disguised as a plain merchant who came running towards them in a panic.

“What do you have to report?” Tanaka demanded quickly, giving the man no time to catch his breath.

“There had been words leaked from the constable office of men sent to keep an eye out for us along this trail, and I’ve seen a couple suspicious figures lurking ahead.”

“How suspicious?” Tanaka pushed on, not satisfied with what she’s being informed on yet.

“They are… sitting on a tree branch, Sir.” The man answered awkwardly, causing his superior to raise a curious brow.

“Alright then, go back to your post.” The man bowed and ran ahead as instructed. Tanaka on the other hand had stopped everyone’s movement and stayed still in thought, slightly musing over the tree branch.

“Keep your weapons at bay and be prepared for anything.” The leader assisted and made her orders clear for everyone to hear, surprising her partner. “If we keep calm and move on as planned, they wouldn’t suspect a thing, right?”

“That’s my line.” Tanaka looked up, feeling offended by being copied. “But you’re right. Let’s carry on, as usual.” She took a deep breath and started moving forward, a dagger clutched tightly in her hidden hand.

Bleeding wounds? Damn she must have gotten cut up pretty badly when she was unconscious in the water.  Also, being independant is good and all, but there ARE sometimes when you should just let someone take care of you. :yep:

Still not sure what the "mission" is, exactly.  By the looks of it, it'll be interesting to find out.

*hinthint* Let's see...
Second half of Chapter 3 links to the previous chapter, so go figure.
I'm left with bringing in the rest of the 4th and 6th Gen girls.

Come on... a little more comments and I canstart on the next chapter XD

Lol... seeing two people sitting on a tree branch would be pretty suspicious to me too.. They might get mistaken for pervs.. XD and the 'Sir' was misleading.. i thought Tanaka-sama was a guy.  :sweatdrop:

hmm, maybe Yuko or Mari is with maki, and Tanaka I thought was gonna be Reinas dad (from the 'SIR") but since it might be Reina, she could be the one with Yoshi or something, and Mari and maki 2gether, but since you said the whole "rest of 4th and 6th gen....." I'm starting to think that Rika might squeeze in there somewhere. Aaaargh can't think sraight with my stooopid mum yelling at me :'(

Ok, ok:
Quote
She stumbled back carelessly, giving momentum to the withdrawing sword that pierced through her by the hands of the person who stole a kiss from her. She struggled to keep her balance, clawing at her attacker in hopes of pulling the other down with her if it shall come to that. In the process, she felt her nails graze across what seems like flesh, easily having created a cut on that surface without her knowing.
Quote
Not until now had she noticed that it was there. A scar an inch long bore into her cheeks, an injury that hardly inflicted any pain when caused. Lifting her slender fingers, the warrior touched the wound gently only to quickly retract her arm when there was a knock to her room.
So with this I'm pretty sure the one who "kill" that girl in the episode 0 was Yossy
Quote
“You finally got the guts to exterminate that clan.”
Why Maki would be asking her this? Maybe Yossy developed some feelings for that girl? This make me think that maybe the story of Konkon and Makoto is like the past, and the girl who "died" in Episode 0 was Mako-chan, and the girl who Makoto and Konkon found was Yossy and that finding was planned, the injuries were to make it more real, but maybe Yossy lost her memory temporaly but when she recovered it, she remembered her mission and tada!!!! (but maybe I'm wrong in all  XD)

About the second episode related with this, the ones in the carriage  that Maki and the rookie heard in the episode 2 are Tanaka and the other woman, just like the ones that seems suspicious to Tanaka's tripulation are Maki and the rookie

This would sound crazy but I think that the one who is with Maki is Sayumi, I mean Sayumi have guts to confront Miki (I always say that she has an evil side) and the Yoshizawa-sama is something I would expect from her

Quote
“Is it really alright like this?”

Hidden under a hood, a woman questioned with much uncertainty. Beside her was a girl of a smaller stature walking confidently with the least of worries in her hands.

“You know, I had expected more from you.” The younger girl looked up, her eyes shadowed by her own headdress but an adolescent frown was visible through the curve of her lips.
With this I discard that it would be Reina's father, so maybe the sir was a little mistake... now I say that the girl is Reina and the woman is Ai-chan, she's Reina's leader but that uncertainty in the character was something that reinforced my guess

Hoping more of this fic... I usually don't post like this (one of the reasons is my poor knowledge of english) but your fic is pretty good and...

Im not sure about this. I thought that chapter 0 was set after the story, at the end and was to be picked up in the last chapters. Like in movies where they start at the end or aftermath and then get to the start to explain how things hapened, then back to the present to show what will happen next, which follows on from the start. Kinda like the messed up timeline of "grudge 2". And besides, I imagined the scratch on another body part..... possibly an arm or something. And I think in the end it's gonna show the real "Killer" ;) But I don't wanna say too much so.....

Oh and I hope you keep updating, you are doing great!

Wow, I'm tired. This chapter... too abrupt? Too little/much? Not enough everyone else?

Well, just gotta wait for Chapter 5 then.

sate, douzo. :)

Chapter 4: Fragments of a past.

The young samurai was thinking solemnly to herself, her attention fully drawn to the contents of her wonders while her body moved through the labyrinth-like manor, its every corner and ends long etched to the depths of her memory, never had been forgotten even till now.

Each step was heavy, as though her straw footwear were made of metal plates and concrete soles. Her insides struggled in a personal war of contradictions as the unchanging expression she held refrained from exposing the battle wounds.

The more she walked, the more isolated her surroundings became. No longer did she pass by the ever so mysterious covert members that would give her looks of mistrust, or the training grounds where novices would quaver in their training boots at someone far more superior than themselves.

A Zen garden soon greeted her, as peaceful in ambiance as it should always be. She felt herself calm down as she crossed the bridge that connected the different sections of the manor together above the sea of white sand.

Following the one-way corridor that led towards a lonely yet extravagant home, the warrior’s journey was gradually accompanied by music of the common people. She followed the melody until a single sliding door granted her no further movement.

Lifting her arm, she knocked gently on the wooden pane that held the thin translucent paper together. The music stop immediately with a surprised twang to the strings of the instrument used and a pained whimper found its way to the warrior’s sensitive ears.

“Is... Is someone there?”

An unusual question compared to the usual “who is it” was asked from inside the room.

“It’s me.”

“Goto-san?”

“No…”

There was a curious hum from behind the white sheets as the door slowly begins to slide open before the warrior, a well-combed head peeking out from between the gap.

A gasp before the door completely flew open, revealing a well-endowed woman dressed elegantly from head to toe. Dreary eyes literally popping open at the uninvited guest.

“Yo… Yoshi…” All the woman could do was stammer incoherently, the name fooling with her tongue as it tries to escape with each attempt of being articulated. “Yocchan…?” Finally, what she had been looking for flowed out intimately as a whisper.

The samurai nodded and immediately gasped in surprise as the refined woman lunged towards her into a tight hug without any hesitation.

Wait.

She pulled away just as quickly with a worried face.

“I’m not hallucinating again, am I?”

The woman lifted her slender hands to touch the warrior’s face, feeling her cheeks that had sunk in slightly, the rough texture of her skin that had weathered many changes, and those eyes that reflected her own; they were somehow not as gentle as it had once been.

“They told me then that you had left for a mission, but it’s been years! I thought maybe you… I’ve never believed it.”

“It’s real, I’m here.”

Yoshizawa cupped the hands that held her face and pulled it away softly and reassuringly, holding them in midair. It felt like the right thing to do, but the taller of the two felt something missing. Every word she says and every move she makes now... she doesn’t know why she is doing them anymore yet she’s doing them all the same.

“Yocchan, I missed you. I’ve missed…”

The woman whispered shyly and leaned forward on her tipped toes, hoping to meet her old acquaintance’s lips with her own. The other did nothing to escape it and accepted the contact willingly.

It was different. It was warm, soft, and innocent. The warrior remembers stolen kisses and playful touches. She remembered nights that consisted of these, and she remembers the lips that she had unconsciously pressed against in response. None of these however matched, being nothing but unlinked memories.

It was only a matter of time when either one decides to pull away. Yoshizawa made it her choice to be the one to do so while her hands were still clasped around the smaller and much smoother ones.

“I’m home, Rika.”

~ ~ ~ ~

Her arms were weak, no thanks to the uncountable days and nights that she had slept through which did nothing to replenish her strength. Despite so, she still insisted to running a finger across her lower lip, the sensation of something weighing on it still lingering with her.

Her hands closed into a tight grudge-filled fist as her mind refreshes scenes that she did the least to welcome. She was anything but a weakling, so how could she have allowed herself to fall into something as pathetic as what she is now…?

“Stranger-san! It’s time to go.”

If it wasn’t for the happy-go-lucky call from a distance, she wouldn’t have remembered that she was now sitting by the shore that borders the ocean, or that she had actually came with someone, or even the fact that she was still bandaged quite poorly. She had almost forgotten that she was injured rather badly a few days ago.

“There you are!” Said companion commonly known to her as ‘Mako-chan’ or more formally, Ogawa Makoto, ran up to her with her infamous fishing net and smiled. “Isn’t it great to be walking about again? That way you wouldn’t completely degrade into tofu while you heal.”

”Don’t you have a better analogy?”

“What’s ana-lo-gy?”

She cringed at the simple mind of the peasant and struggled to get up instead of explain herself. Makoto on the other hand, quickly hurried to assist the recuperating woman.

“Be careful! We don’t want you splitting your guts open again.”

“I can assure you that it would not happen!” With all her stubbornness, she refused to move in the same pace as Makoto. Unfortunately, it only resulted in a sharp splitting sensation tearing across her abdomen. She winced hard and fell limp, falling forward slightly if it wasn’t for a pair of helping arms that promptly stretched out to help her.

“You see! Konkon said specifically that you shouldn’t strain yourself even if you’re already conscious and able to move again. Why won’t you listen?” Makoto scolded like an upset parent as she helped her companion up again. She was thankful that nothing serious actually happened though.

“What do you know?” The hardheaded woman countered, struggling to get her legs into motion again.

“I know that if you carry on being like this… I’ll have to make you listen by force.”

“Yeah right, like I’d be afraid of you.”

“I’d throw you into the ocean as fish food if you won’t cooperate.”

“You wouldn’t dare.” The older woman laughed at the ludicrous claim.

“I’d be dumb enough to try.” Makoto smirked confidently, tightening her grip on the other’s arm that she held on to.

“Ow…” The injured woman winced at the pressure and shrugged to show that she wasn’t going to play along. In reality though, she was actually convinced that Makoto would truly have her be treated as fish food, by mistake.

“So… let’s talk while we walk.” Makoto suggested upon noticing the prolonged silence, though personally feeling proud of having conquered the stubborn mule that she was assisting at the moment for once.

“I’d rather not.”

“You’d rather hear me babble for the next 20 minutes then?”

“Okay, fine. What do you want to talk about?”

“I’d really, really like to know your name actually.”

“Is it necessary?”  Makoto nodded enthusiastically, no intention of pulling away her excited look until she’s given a satisfactory answer.

“Of course it is! If you were to wander out some day and faint on the street, I’d at least know who I should be looking for. Or if your grave needs a name, things like that. You know…”

“You can’t be serious.”

“What else can I be?”

“N-never mind.”

“Come on, it’s just a name.”

”Fine!” The elder grunted and reluctantly nodded, “Fine… it’s Fujimoto. Fujimoto Miki.”

“Such a cute name,” Makoto mused, “I hope you would cooperate with us from now on, Fujimoto-san.”

Aww Rika comes in the picture now.. But it seems like they're not that close anymore, if they were really close. Its because of the mission huh? It's always the reason they fall apart..  :(

By the looks of it, Yossi and Rika had always been close, and Rika evidently felt much more for Yossi than she probably realized (judging by her reaction to what Rika did). The fact that Yossi didn't resist or pull away shows that she herself probably feels the same way about Rika, though perhaps she hasn't consciously realized/admitted it to herself.

So it was Miki that was fished out of the water by Mako. She must therefore have been the woman from the prologue, right?  What was it that was after her then?

Oh, and LULZ at Miki and Mako's playfully sarcasm-laid dialogue.

Hmmm...wonder why Rika's initially thought that it was Maki that knocked on her door? Is she Rika's bodyguard... or possibly, something more? :O

I think I know what hapened now! Let's see, about a year ago, Yoshi and Rika were together, then Yoshi went on that mission where she (i think but have not much evidence to support this otehr than the beggining) fell in love with Miki, but she had to carry out her mission to kill her. That's where it gets interesting, she fell in love and cant do it. Under pressure though she is forced to give up her true love or something and she attempts to kill Miki. What she doesn't realise is that she is still alive and probably looking for her..... <3 Oh the drama! I luv it! Luv drama! And have a huge imagination..... ergo the thing I just came up with. I think I am mostly right. Lol, I was right about Rika having a part! yey! I had a feeling she would show up eventually..... Don't know why..... if this post spoils too much feel free to delete it....or tell me to..... Either way, I'd love it if you told me, so Im not confused going "Who tha hell deleted this?"
