Bruceploitation

Bruceploitation is a cultural phenomenon mostly seen in the 1970s after the untimely death of martial artist and martial arts actor Bruce Lee in 1973. Movie makers in mainland China, Hong Kong and Taiwan hired a great number of Bruce Lee look-alike actors to star in many cheap knock-off martial arts movies to cash in on his success after his death.

Hoooly shit! Some of there flicks are fucking ridiculous XD

Clones of Bruce Lee

After Bruce Lee arrives DOA at the hospital, Collin of the Special Bureau of Investigations uses technology to create three clones of Lee, played by Bruce Le, Dragon Lee, and Bruce Thai. They are trained in martial arts by Bolo Yeung. One of the clones starts work as a movie star for a corrupt producer who plans to have him die on camera. Meanwhile, the other clones go to Thailand, where they meet up with Bruce Lai (not a clone). While there, they happen upon a beach that is loaded with completely naked lovelies for no particular reason. The Professor who perfected the cloning technology goes off the rails and programs the clones to destroy each other. Although they fight, the Professor pays heavily for his betrayal.

Bruce Lee: The Dragon Lives Again

The Dragon Lives Again, originally released as Li san jiao wei zhen di yu men and also known as Deadly Hands of Kung Fu, is a martial arts fantasy comedy in which the soul of Bruce Lee (played by Bruce Leung Siu-lung) goes to the Underworld. The deceased Lee meets a number of pop-culture icons, including Dracula, James Bond, Zatoichi, Clint Eastwood, The Godfather, The Exorcist, and even 1970s soft-porn character Emmanuelle. Lee befriends The One-Armed Swordsman, Caine from TV's Kung Fu, and Popeye. The film begins with the grammatically-challenged announcement, "This film is dedicated to millions who love Bruce Lee."

This trailer is full of lies

"A REAL Bruce Lee movie, from the beginning to the end without added scenes from other Bruce Lee movies! (lol why did they mention that no scenes from other movies were added  :D ?"
"It was shot in 1968 for the TV Company ABC" (but  was shot in 1979 and its from the Eternal Film Company [hk]/Goldig Films (H.K.))
"The movie has now a 35mm format through a technical recopy from the 16 mm format version" It was shot in 35 mm

a better trailer for this movie

But I heard thats its a good Kung Fu flick  :)

Recently Masa sat down with Carl Jones, author of the new book "Here Come the Kung Fu Clones" and they kicked knowledge about Bruce Lee knock-off movies of the 70s known as Bruceploitation

Hello Masa and all Japanese Bruceploitation Fans!

How did you get involved with a project about Bruceploitation?

I've been interested in both martial arts -real and movies - for over 35 years. This is my first book but I did briefly write a column( 'Fists from the Past') in a UK magazine called Jade Screen. I also wrote reviews and articles for a number of websites.
The book HERE COME THE KUNG FU CLONES grew out of the many reviews I was submitting to the now defunct 'Bruceploitation' website. I thought they would look much better in book form and fortunately managed to convince my publisher; John Overall too!

How long did it take you to complete the book?

The genesis of the book began as far back as 1997! The current product took shape over 18 months, which is pretty fast in hindsight as amny books take years or never get published at all. Yes. I have a collection of research materials and other fans helped along the way .

Did anything in your research surprise you?

Not really. Remember, we are talking of films that feature fighting Gorillas and Midgets!

How do you feel Bruceploitation contributes to Bruce Lee's legacy?

It all adds to the mystique of the real Bruce Lee. He almost becomes a fictional character like James Bond played by different actors. Of course there are those who hold these films as blasphemous and I respect their opinion too. I was once like that.

What audience are you aiming for with this book?

Anyone who likes to laugh as well has having an affection for the films. After all, they weren't meant to be over-analysed.

Who is your favorite Bruceploitation clone and why?

It has to be Bruce Li. He became a good actor and great screen fighter, much like the man he was portraying.

Which Bruceploitation movie is your favorite and why?

I really like a lot of them : FIST OF FURY 2 (a Quentin Tarantino favourite), BRUCE LEE THE MAN, THE MYTH, ENTER THE GAME OF DEATH etc. The best one for me though is THE LAST STRIKE with Bruce Li, Lo Meng and Carl Scott (aka SOUL BROTHERS OF KUNG FU).

With the current state of Bruce Lee related movies (biopics, series and Ip Man sequels) on the horizon - how would they stack up with the Bruceploitation movies of the 70s?

Technically they are very good however, they are just as exploitive as those filmed in the 1970's. The recent TV series is proof of that, butagain adding to the mystique.

If you were to direct a Bruceploitation movie for today's generation, what would be your outlandish plot and who star in it?

Ha! That's a good question. It would have to be set in the 70's and made EXACTLY as those films where. Cheap and cheerful in other words!

What are your plans for the upcoming 70th anniversary of Bruce Lee's birth?

I always have a thought for Sifu Lee on the 20th July.

What's next on the horizon for you? A Book Tour perhaps?

Too busy mate! My family, job and my Karate club take up a lot of my time. I'm looking to finish my next book on basic techniques of Shukokai Karate sometime soon. Enjoy life and take time out to relax. Life is short but it all works out in the end!

Thank you for taking the time to answer our questions Carl, and best of luck with the book!

Thank you Masa, it's been a pleasure.

me too. me too. :P

mad props to John Overall for the prompt delivery! "Here Come the Kung Fu Clones" was chock full of information. The book is well organized, divided by eras and actors.

Carl Jones style is filled with humor and in depth discussion of the vast amount of Bruce Lee clone movies makes it a fun read. For example, he'd give a running commentary on such Bruce Li classics as "Dynamo" - "Maybe he was injured or something during the filming of these scenes as the double" XD There's even a whole section breaking down "Game of Death" and the many possible versions that could and do exist.

It's really an amazing book, Jones goes into comparisons of versions that are available on VHS, DVD, etc. and I love how "Dragon The Bruce Lee Story" made by Hollywood in 1993 is included - even though it was meant to be a serious biopic, unlike most Bruceploitaton movies. The in depth analysis of Brucesploitation movies had on the tabloid rumours of Bruce Lee's life makes these movies a must see.

For a book that is chockful of pictures is good for someone who mind tends to wander when reading, it's the defacto guide when you wanna go down to Chinatown or ebay and dig up these titles. A good portion of the last part of the book is simply a gallery of many Bruceploitation titles in existence.

:hipheart: :hipheart: :hipheart: :hipheart:  outta 5  O0

Here's hoping they make more!

And if I had known about this forum AND this book, I'd have told the story about my Bruce Lee clone movie-watching disasters -- including the one where I had to ask my grandmother to queue for me because I was a 9 year old boy not allowed to watch an ultra-violent movie then!

Poster of 'Bruce Lee' Released
2010-10-11 16:35:59     CRIENGLISH.com       Web Editor: zhanglin

"Bruce Lee", an upcoming feature film about one of the most influential martial artists of all time, has released its first poster, M1905.com reported on October 10.

The poster, depicting Lee's stern expression in classic black and white, is missing other information, such as the release date, other actors, and slogans. Hong Kong actor Aarif Lee, who plays Bruce Lee in the film, resembles him in appearance and manner.

This year would have been Lee's 70th birthday, so the film can be seen as a salute to him. Many unknown stories of Lee will be revealed and audiences will get to know this legendary figure better.

The film's scheduled release is in November.
