Title: Embarrassed to watch H!P stuff with others around
Post by: Masabi on November 20, 2006, 12:39:31 AM
Have you ever been a bit embarrassed to watch H!P stuff around others?  As a female I do.  Recently, stuff like Melodies, Some boys! touch, and Aisucreamu to My Purin have been coming out and when I try to watch it on my living room TV and my brother or my dad walks in, I feel embarrassed.  Has this ever happened to you?  [this thread is obviously more geared towards straight females but I suppose sometimes guys can feel embarrassed about it as well xD]

@tanakachi : It's not that I'm not ALLOWED.  It's just I'm afraid of what they'll think with all those ero stuffs around.
@Shaoran :  What's so wrong with Koi no Telephone Goal?  It's weird but at least it's not sexual :3.. And my dad and brother are used to it as well, but I'm more afraid of what they're thinking/not saying @___@
@Himalia : I have never "converted" someone into H!P by playing their stuff when they're around.  Haha.  They just think I'm weird..

Forget that.  When the guys come over to LAN, I'm blasting Mini Moni & Morning Musume PVs.  They aren't into it, but they do think it's hillarious either way.  Helps to lighten any mood.  Gotta stick to your guns and not care what other people think about your musical tastes. :pimp:

It's not about the music, it's about what people think about Goto grabbing her boobs.  "This is the kind of stuff you're into!?"  o_O;

My brother would think I'm a weirdo if he sees me watch, young Asian j pop singers all the time.
Oh, well.

YEAAAAAAAHHH!!!!!
*hi5s Lajonsky*

At first I was a little embarrassed just because I was watching a bunch of girls dancing around on stage. Now, I don't care. This is what I like, and I'm not ashamed to admit it. People can think and say whatever they want, they won't do shit, anyways.

Most of my family doesn't know, nor would they care, because I balance it out with Johnny's. XD

Most of my friends don't mind it much anymore. They care more for the girls than the music, though. XD

I get embarrassed not from my family but from my friends
mainly because I live in like a super white neighborhood and I'm like the only asian around here.
and the asian friends I do have, they tell me I'm so asian like it's a bad thing but I sort of have an attitude problem ( maybe because I'm from new york? ) and I tell them off like "maybe it's because I am asian"

Wow. The hypocrisy.
As if nowadays sex in music videos was rare. For some reason, I bet they wouldn't say the same thing if you were watching random clips of random American pop singers going slutty. It would just be banal.

Anyway... I've never watched any H!P stuff with people around. Ah, except the Haro Moni live of "Koi no Hana" by Nacchi, and the feedbacks i got (by my friends) were "OMG she's so pretty!!1!"
If i watched "Ne~e?" (for instance) with my family or friends around, they would think i'm weird, i have no taste and like stupid kids' stuff. :)

PVs like "Aisucream" or "Some Boys" don't embarass me at all. Come on, you see that ero stuff everytime you turn TV on. I would be hella embarassed by Mini Moni's PVs though.

Yeah, I also feel embarrassed. That's why I lock my door before I watch H!P stuff.

Wait, that sounds even more suspicious. I just can't win :-(

But then we watch the random dorama of the week and they calm down XD

I'll tend to be a little embarrassed at looking at H!P things too much while other people are around, mainly it's because I don't want people to think I'm a crazy perv. Alot of it goes the same with looking at j-idols in general, as it tends to make people think you're looking at porn or even child porn >_>

In terms of blasting the music, If I think it will disturb the other people around me, I most likely won't play it. But if I think it would be alright, why not?

I was about to write almost the same thing.

Let me ask you this: do you feel embarrassed to watch a Cristina Aguilera video? Or a Shakira video? Have you ever feel embarrassed for watching a Madonna video?
You should never feel embarrassed of your tastes. Hell, I even play the Rainbow Pink performance from the Rainbow 7 concert on my living room big screen TV, and my mother finds it amusing, my dad doesn't care, and my brother is cursing me (because now my 6 and 7 year old nieces want the song and the outfit :D :D  )

Well...I mean, I'm deffinlatly in your place Gray. And really, at first I wasn't embarassed because I never thought of H!P in anyway perverted, even when watching Some Boys! Touch because it's kinda how all music is anyway, like people are saying. But then I saw that there are people who just like it for the perverted reasons and then i felt more embarassed.

But I guess it more comes down to being honest with yourself and the people you're sharing it with. You haven't got anything to hide, you don't watch it because they're good looking, you just like the music like so many of us. It might make you feel better to show them and tell them why you like it so you don't have to worry about them making assumptions. I try to share it with people I know can appreciate the music, because that's what it is for me, and Nacchi's like an idol to me.

The thing about some boys! touch is, I feel like it's about so much more than Maki touching her boobs. I think the music is absolutly amazing, if you just sit there and listen to it on your ipod it's like a feast for the ears, all of H!P is for me. You should show people that part of H!P, or the part you particularily like yourself. (Wow, that got long XD)

For things like Melodies, Some Boys! TOUCH, or Aisu Kuriimu to My Purin, I'm not embarassed at all.  Not because I'm confident in my manliness, just that I don't find anything wrong with a guy watching it since such things are targeted at men. (although it might make a girl uncomfortable or embarassed) If you can't take pride, or let it be firmly known that this is a thing you like and there's nothing wrong with it ...then you SHOULD be embarassed.  You turn on MTV or BET and you see so much more sexuality its almost disgusting, which is one of the main reasons why H!P and JPOP are so appealing to me.

Things that are so happy-go-lucky like Mini-Moni songs are kinda embarassing, but I can still watch it with others in the room.  I even own H!P merchandise like CDs and DVDs and Posters, so its not like I hide it.

The reason why people think you might be weird (and this is to anyone), is that people nowadays have been superficial (especially in high school, where usually you're interests or the music you listen to determines your crowd or group of friends), or that they're ignorant of any other music that they don't like or not familiar with ("I listen to all music, except country, I hate country, it sucks" <-things like that).

Hrm...if there was something I'd be embarassed to watch in front of people would be a couple of Berryz or C-ute videos...I don't know, that just pushes the boundaries for me, lol

I don't know.... I have no problems with H!P PVs, TV programs, or any of their clips...
I love their music and, hell what! Thay actually ARE a bunch of super CUTE girls... And everyone love cute girls =^_^=
but... you know... sometimes when someone hears musics like Chu! Natsu Party or almost ALL of MiniMoni...
They really do the "what-is-this-insane-person-hearing" face...
now THIS face sometimes gets me embarassed ¬¬'

Word to the max!

The only thing my relatives ever see me watching is J-drama. Me looking at PVs or concerts? Fuck no. I'm always minimizing when someone walks in. I'd rather them think I'm looking at porn than watching 'little girls' bouncing around singing weirdass songs. I don't care about them hearing me though ^____^

My friends know my H!P fandom and I don't mind looking at H!P stuff when they're around. If they think I'm a sick perv for that then they're not my friends! :p

There are still some limitations to that though... I probably won't want to play a Rainbow Pink song or Mini-moni perfs since they're ridiculously kiddy and non-mainstream. But as much as H!P is selling out these days, there are still some quality to their recent music and stuff that are more acceptable to the general public, say IroJire (my ex-coworker loves that song despite having no previous exposure to h!p and even jpop music in general), Jiriri (awesome arrangement and I can always challenge those classical music freaks if they could tell which classical piece was used in the intro XD) and recent Ayaya and Nacchi song which are quite mainstream. So with some careful choosing, you could expose your hp fandom without making people think you're a pedo. XD

But yeah, my relatives and family know nothing about my fandom coz I don't want to explain to them. They're way older than me and they think differently. LOL.

They played Gam's MELODIES on Singapore's local radio FTW!! And i immediately showed my mates the PV, they love it.

I'm never the one to hide my love for MM, i have almost the whole H!P discography on my ipod, on the move i'll either be watching my hello morning, or anything related to H!P. My wallpaper are pictures of PBs, my MSN avatar is Miki goes on and on and on....

Recently there has been lots of animals on HM and ive been sharing it with friends who loves animals and they agree MM girls + animals are a perfect match.

as for the music I have H!P music on all the time, I don't mind if people hear it cause I love it and I love sharing MM vids!  I'm one of the crazy people that like to convert everyone to H!P and so forth cause it's fun sharing things you like with people and when they like it too then all the better :D   Usually I'm watching hello morning in which I've shown my friends and the animal eps were perfect for the rest of my family so it works out :)

Hmm, I have the same opinions as maliciel and redturtle. I can't openly watch HP pv anytime I want .. I have no problem at all watching the pvs myself but I can't watch it when my father, mother or siblings in my room. And I don't even dare to watch the pv such as MKB - shouji na Eros, some boys and aisucream when everyone around.. And that is my situation. I just have to accept it.

I'm really comfortable watching PVs around my family but I'm more wary when my sisters' or brother's friends are sleeping over. I mean, Hello Morning and the other tv show/movies are fine but I avoid watching Berryz/C-ute concerts when they're around. My best friend still won't stop bugging me for liking Berryz so I won't take my chances with people I don't really know.

As for listening, well let's just say whoever that gets a ride in my car gets a strong dose of Morning Musume/Mini-Moni blasted out the speakers :P

You gotta find a way to get your mind off the bloody traffic jam right?

With most H!P stuff, I'm okay. But my mom is around most of the time, so I wouldn't watch something like Melodies around her. I think even if I were a guy I wouldn't do that, but who knows @_@.

With things like HaroMoni I'm okay but for some reason I get embarrassed when I'm watching PVs, especially close-up versions where they have their faces covering the whole screen.

It's like how I never blast on Chinese songs or watch anything Chinese on the computer when my mom is around. On top of that, I'm Chinese, and I don't even know why I avoid it. Weird

For starters, I'm not into H!P at all (quickly ducks), but if I was, I would keep it a VERY tight secret.. (I'm really not..I'm just here for the gravure IVs...true!!)
I guess if I was back in Australia, it wouldn't be so embarrassing, but being a grown man in Japan, you just don't want that kind of stigma associated with yourself.
"WTF are you talking about?", you ask. Well, in all honestly, and remember, don't shoot the messenger, any guy who's into H!P in Japan, is considered a freak/total loser. The type of guy that is pointed at on the street and laughed at. And again, in all honestly, I haven't personally met a single person in Japan in the 6years I've been here, who actually likes H!P (or admitted to it), but have seen some grown fans on the streets, and noticed all the giggles from the people around them.
As I wrote on a different forum once, I have no problem hiring out porn from the local video store, but wouldn't be seen dead hiring out an H!P CD.

I get a feeling (sorry if its not the case XD) that some girls here are a lil embarassed looking at their favourite members on screen (albeit in sexy clothings or poses) because they are afraid people will look at them differently. I say heck with it, girls are beautiful creatures (especially H!P girls), therefore girls or guys should look at girls no matter who they are without the need to blush and feel awkward!!

The fact I like H!P is probably the worst kept secret at my school. I've had all range of reactions. From "oh really, cool!" to "WTF?!" to outright laughter. That last one is the most common :p But I'm a female gaijin in Japan, probably the rarest of all H!P fans, so I actually don't cop it as bad as others do. I do get occasional looks of fear at the concerts though, haha.

But I have noticed people's opinions changing lately, so it doesn't bother me quite so much to be a public fan anymore. Hell I had some of my friends singing Sexy Boy at karaoke last night. The very people who can't stand Momusu. That's win win for me :p But if I were guy, I think it would be an entirely different situation.

Was that mm-bbs? Or DAMN? I can't remember the forum but I remember the post.

As for me, I tell my friends I like JPop and they're all like "such as?"; so I show them a few videos or play a few songs and they either say "that wasn't bad" or "that was shit". It doesn't bother me either way. I tend to minimise and close shit when people come into my room but that's more out of habit from danger wanking than embarrassment over H!P.

I tells ya if I were in Japan for the 10th Anniversary concert I'd be OADing with the wota. Sure, they're weird, social outcasts and most likely paedophiles, but their dances kick arse. And if you think about it, they're absolutely no different to all the rockabillies and the wannabe hip hoppers in Japan. They're just obsessed with something different.

The way I see it, their opinions won't change my personal feelings towards H!P, so why let their opinions bother me? Do you think other people are weird for playing video games? Unlikely. Do you think other people are weird simply because they like something you don't understand? Nope, you just get on with it. The same should be for H!P.

That said, in Japan, I wouldn't go around shouting out my love for H!P, but I wouldn't feel like a loser walking into the H!P stores, either.

That's the key word right there, which makes it very different to rockabillies, hip hoppers, gamers..etc.

Short story time:
In class one day, and I ask the students to take out their colour pencils, and one girl pulled out her Morning Musume pencil box. I asked her if she likes Morning Musume, and she gave me the evil eye and said in Japanese, she wants a new pencil case, because she's grown out of them, but her mother won't buy one, and this student was 6.
So, what I'm getting at, it's all fine and dandy to be a fan, but to openly show it in Japan, would be like being an open and proud "Wiggles (http://www.thewiggles.com.au/)" fan in Australia. Way not cool!!

I did had this habit when I first began to like watching MM shows and anything related to them, i'd pause or stop and open a new window when my parents or sister barges into my room. I still do this sometimes maybe cuz its become a habit. But now I tell my parents that I like watching their programmes esp since my mom knows about them like ayaya and goto, she once came in when ayaya was on the screen and said "aa! ayaya desho? ayaya daa..." and left...
Watching Goto Maki's SOME BOYS TOUCH was alittle weird for me too... and Melodies I was like "oh no oh no oh noooo" at the kiss part. In school I totally wanna watch but feel really uneasy when my friends are beside me watching what I watch for some reason tho and I also try to hide my desktop background (all yossie or MM)... I guess I'm afraid my friends might mistake me for like liking girls or something

oh 93.3 they have a japanese/korean song section I think.... why can't they play it in perfect 10 that'll get more attention by the singaporeans!

Well, you know the old phrase "people are afraid of what they don't understand".  So, since it's in another language, people think it's 10x worse for some reason.  I don't know whether it's deep rooted racism or if they just don't understand, but it seems to be a lot worse when I watch this kind of stuff rather than Britney Spears (which I used to like back in like, what? gradeschool? but that was back when she had a "pure image")

My sister thinks I'm obsessed with Japan because she's seen me enjoying some form of anime/film/game. So I guess by her logic, just by liking something that comes from Japan, must mean I'm fascinated on the country itself.

My experience with others and H!P/J-pop hasn't been great. I let a friend listen to Ayumi Hamasaki's 'Fly High' and she laughed at me for it. I'm not particularly open about it to anyone, usually if someone enters the room, I just switch off the music there and then as they would only ask what it was, and I don't feel I should explain it to someone who wouldn't understand anyway and just give me the funny looks.

Well, that is, of course, a sweeping generalisation. It's like saying all gamers are sweaty nerds who never leave the house, or hip hoppers are all sex crazed drug addict gangstas or rockabillies are all bike gang thugs.

So really, it's no different at all. I don't think all H!P fans are paedophiles, it's just that sometimes they take their fandom to extremes and it comes off that way.

[this thread is obviously more geared towards straight females but I suppose sometimes guys can feel embarrassed about it as well xD]

yes, sometimes.

But i don't feel that when i watch Real face PV xD (Kat-tun)

At first.  But then I'll turn on "Acchi Chikyu wo Samasunda" and remind whoever is around that no other top-ranked pop group in the world has released a song about the environment.

Really, if people have no problem watch a 17-year old Britney Spears prancing around in "Baby Hit Me One More Time," then they shouldn't have a problem with MM.  Unless if it's OK to be a sexy bimbo but not OK to be cute...

My friends at my old school all know I'm Jpop crazy and into H!P since I practically make them sit through the vids and tell me which of the girls are pretty and why
Now at my new school my friends just know I'm into Jpop but they don't know who and don't really care.
I miss my old school and friends :ONfarofflook:
On the bright side though, I still have my brother who likes H!P too. But we don't agree on which girls are pretty :p
For my parents, I usually pause whatever I'm watching just so they wouldn't ask me a bunch of questions I don't wanna answer. Plus it gets really annoying that my dad keeps calling any Asian girl as 'the ones from SPEED' all thanks to my bro's fandom a couple of years back XD
I don't know if I'm embarrassed since I don't hide the fact that I'm a fan. I just don't really broadcast it I guess.

I just watched "Aisucreamu to My Purin" and I must say...
I got embarrassed even if I was alone! O.o
Sorry to all VUDen fans (I'm a fan too), but WHAT WAS THAT???
the costume, the coreography, THE FACES!!! >_<
I really don't mind the new "Ero" trend in the H!P groups of older girls, but please.... do it nice... and smooth... (Just like in GAM, see...)
Now THIS kind of PV gets me embarrassed... ¬¬'

I'm not embarressed of it, but I generally don't tell Japanese people I like H!P... there's just such a negative stigma attached to it here in Japan. It's unfortunate since actually I REALLY love H!P, it sucks that I have to keep it on the low-down.

I'm also into Berryz, Hinoi Team, Cute and stuff like Hoshii Nanase, Harenchi Punch, AKB48 and Yuko Ogura... and this is also frowned upon by the Japanese mainstream public.

But to me I get so much enjoyment out of listening and watching this stuff that I'm not gonna stop despite the negative consequences... I'm not gonna let a bunch of conservatives bully me out of being into the things I enjoy.

It's difficult to explain accurately but basically if you tell a Japanese person you like H!P they simply don't want to know you. They seem to find it kind of disgusting for an adult to be interested in idol singers. The Japanese say "kimochi warui" or "kimoi" to express this kind of feeling.

I guess if you are younger (maybe under 25 or something) people wouldn't find it disgusting although I imagine you would still get teased about it.

I'm not trying to put people off liking H!P by saying the above, I'm just saying what I've seen here in Japan with my own eyes since I started living here. Personally I will continue to buy H!P and other idol products since I enjoy them.

Generally I'm not embarrased cuz I don't watch the ero vids(like melodies and some boys touch) I don't find aisu cream to my purin as bad a the others it's fine for me, but i did pause it when my Dad came in XD
I don't hide my japanese fandom, i'd be surprised if someone in my class didn't know(not that i talk about it all the time, it's just my class is smallish and most have known me for 5years).  Some know me for doing the dances on buses and physics lessons XD!!!

I'm a guy but I can understand why you being a young girl might be embarrassed. Personally I kind of enjoy being considered "a bit strange". XD

An example: I love all of H!P and not long ago I had a period when I was particularly into Minimoni. I installed a few Minimoni videos on my mobile phone, and watched them during my breaks at work. I showed a couple to a work buddy, but the only reaction I got was him laughingly asking if I was feeling OK.
"Sure, I feel great!" I said or something to that effect, and proceeded to try to convince him that he would feel great too, if only he would start to appreciate the greatness of H!P. Again he just laughed, the poor bastard...

I haven't given up though - I intend to continue slowly brainwashing my co-workers until they're all as obsessed as myself, and we'll all dance the crazy wota dances in the lunch room, while listening to Mikitty or something on full blast. :pimp:

I'm totally open-minded with that. I'm not embarrassed nor ashamed to watch them near other people, even though my dad has made some irritating comments, like when he actually compares L'Arc~en~Ciel to Morning Musume (a comparison that makes no sense at all), saying how much they're better than the girls.
Hell, do I even care. It's my music taste, so I never worry about people around me when it comes to that subject.
In fact, I watch Some Boys! Touch and Aisu Kuriimu to My Purin PVs in my mother's and father's front, they say nothing against it. Might it be because of the place I live? I don't know, but they're okay (my mom, especially) with it, since I've always shown my interest to japanese stuff, be it sexy, cute or not.

I don't really care if someone of my family sees me watching H!P PVs/concerts anymore. At first I felt uncomfortable and stopped when someone came in but now I only press stop to be able to listen to them if they want to talk with me ^^;
My Berryz Koubou calendar is perfectly viewable when you enter my room.. it was strange when it was new, but I got used to it now. Nobody says something about it anyway D:

Well everyone knows that I am Japanphil (XD) and my sister likes H!P too and my brother is an anime freak who listens to some jpop as well. Therefore it's nothing special here.

I want to introduce my music class to jpop next year (I hopefully get in that "class".. actually course) and I am definitely going to show them a H!P song as example (of course something else too ^^; like Ayu, BoA or hikki etc.).
But I usually don't show other people that I like H!P (or jpop), but I am very reserved anyway~ so I don't show them anything at all :ONglasses:

exactly my dilemma, but i usually get accused of being. 1) a pedo lover 2) gay.

especially when im trying to draw some H!P/Idol fanart in our school's computer lab... if i draw bikini' clas Rika's they would say im drawing hentai, but if i draw some cutesy stuff (like.. Momosu), they'd say im drawing pedo hentai...
