I was just hoping for some Peg Sheety representation, so Toews getting on made me go " ".

The goalies were pretty much a lock with Ward having injured himself. Biggest shocker for me was no Bouwmeester. LULZ Flames fans had all their hopes dashed when "only" Iginla was included.

VANCOUVER — The city is spending $650,000 on 6,000 Olympic banners on major streets, bridges and around 2010 venues.

The banners, which cost more than $100 each, went up on Cambie Street Wednesday.

"Half that cost is to produce the banner and about half to install it," said City of Vancouver spokeswoman Lesli Boldt.

"We hope to have them all installed by the end of the week."

The banners, made in Barrie, Ont., will be placed on Cambie and Granville streets from SW Marine Drive to downtown and on Hastings Street from Boundary Road to downtown. They'll also be on the city's False Creek Bridges and around venues.

Boldt said the city hopes to use the banners after the Games as a legacy.

"We converted the previous Olympic banners into bags for schoolkids and put school supplies in them and worked with the Downtown Eastside non-profit to make that happen," she said.

Boldt said the city is spending the money from Vancouver's $20-million Olympic and Paralympic Legacy Reserve Fund, "to create some excitement and make Vancouver look great for the Games."

The city also spent $25,000 putting a four-page newspaper supplement in the Vancouver Sun which Boldt described as "Host City 101."

She said the insert will also be available at community centres and libraries and is a basic guide for residents "on what it means to be a host city, how to get around and different things you can participate in."

The guide includes a Top 10 list of ways to be a good host, including things like offering help to visitors looking at maps and where to send people to get visitor information, police or medical help.

It also urges people to "share your love of the city" and "be patient on public transit," as well as "enjoy yourself."

In other news, Vancouver raises parking rates to $6 per hour and extended the hours! Not to mention an increase in property taxes

Clara Hughes named Canada's Olympic flag-bearer
4-time Olympian won medals in speedskating, cycling
Last Updated: Saturday, January 30, 2010 | 3:10 AM ET

Clara Hughes, multiple Olympic medallist, champion cyclist and star speedskater, will lead Team Canada into BC Place Stadium carrying her country's flag at the opening ceremony of the 2010 Vancouver Games.

The announcement was made Friday at city hall in Richmond, B.C.

"This is without a doubt the greatest honour of my sporting life," said an emotional Hughes.

"For 20 years I've had the privilege of representing Canada around the globe … first on the bike and then on my blades. The experiences have shaped me into who I am today.

"I want people to be inspired that I've always strived for excellence and I've always gone beyond what anybody ever thought I could do, what I thought I myself could do. And I've allowed myself to be inspired, kept my eyes open and my senses open to inspiration around me."

Seasoned athlete

For one, the Winnipeg native is one of only four athletes in the world who has won medals at both the Summer and Winter Games. She reached the podium five times in three Olympics — and that includes a speedskating gold at the 2006 Turin Games.

She competed as a cyclist in Atlanta 1996 and Sydney 2000. Then, as a speedskater, she raced in Salt Lake 2002 and Turin 2006.

"I think she is the cream of the crop," said Beckie Scott, the former Olympic cross-country champion who shares many of the same qualities as Hughes.

"Not just when it comes to what she's accomplished as an athlete, but as a human being. She's a gem. She's someone who is truly remarkable in all arenas."

IOC confirms Olympic luger dies after crash
21 minutes ago

By STEPHEN WILSON AP Sports Writer

VANCOUVER, British Columbia(AP)—A men’s Olympic luger from the country of Georgia died Friday after a high-speed crash during training. IOC president Jacques Rogge said the death hours before the opening ceremony “clearly casts a shadow over these games.”

Nodar Kumaritashvili lost control of his sled, went over the track wall and struck an unpadded steel pole near the finish line at Whistler Sliding Center. Doctors were unable to revive the 21-year-old luger, who died at a hospital, the International Olympic Committee said.

Rescue workers were at his side within seconds, chest compressions and mouth-to-mouth resuscitation started less than one minute after the crash, and he was quickly airlifted to a trauma center in Whistler.

Kumaritashvili struck the inside wall of the track on the final turn. His body immediately went airborne and cleared the ice-coated concrete wall along the left side of the sliding surface. His sled remained in the track, and it appeared his helmet visor skidded down the ice.

“It’s a very rare situation,” three-time Olympic champion and German coach Georg Hackl said before learning of the death and was clearly shaken moments after seeing Kumaritashvili tended to furiously by medical officials.

Olympic competition in men’s luge is scheduled to begin Saturday. It’s unclear if that schedule would be affected.

It was Kumaritashvili’s second crash during training for the Vancouver Games. He also failed to finish his second of six practice runs, and in the runs he did finish, his average speed was about 88 mph - significantly less than the speed the top sliders are managing on this lightning-fast course.

It was unclear how fast Kumaritashvili was going, although many sliders have exceeded 90 mph on this course. The track is considered the world’s fastest and several Olympians recently questioned its safety. More than a dozen athletes have crashed during Olympic training for luge, and some questioned whether athletes from smaller nations - like Georgia - had enough time to prepare for the daunting track.

At the finish area, not far from where Kumaritashvili lost control, athletes, coaches and officials solemnly awaited word on Kumaritashvili before eventually being ushered away. Access to the crash area was closed within about 30 minutes.

“I’ve never seen anything like that,” said Shiva Keshavan, a four-time Olympian from India.

The remainder of men’s training was canceled for the day, with VANOC officials saying in a release that an investigation was taking place to “ensure a safe field of play.”

Kumaritashvili competed in five World Cup races this season, finishing 44th in the world standings.

Earlier in the day, gold-medal favorite Armin Zoeggeler of Italy crashed, losing control of his sled on Curve 11. Zoeggeler came off his sled and held it with his left arm to keep it from smashing atop his body. He slid on his back down several curves before coming to a stop and walking away.

Training days in Whistler have been crash-filled. A Romanian woman was briefly knocked unconscious and at least four Americans - Chris Mazdzer on Wednesday, Megan Sweeney on Thursday and both Tony Benshoof and Bengt Walden on Friday in the same training session where Zoeggeler wrecked - have had serious trouble just getting down the track.

“I think they are pushing it a little too much,” Australia’s Hannah Campbell-Pegg said Thursday night after she nearly lost control in training. “To what extent are we just little lemmings that they just throw down a track and we’re crash-test dummies? I mean, this is our lives.”

At the 1992 Winter Olympics in Albertville, Nicholas Bochatay of Switzerland died after crashing into a snow grooming machine during training for the demonstration sport of speed skiing on the next-to-last day of the games. He was practicing on a public slope before his event was to begin.

Austrian downhill skier Ross Milne died when he struck a tree during a training run shortly before the 1964 Winter Games in Innsbruck, Austria. British luger Kazimierz Kay-Skrzypecki also died in a crash during training in Innsbruck.

At the 1988 Calgary Games, an Austrian team doctor, Jorg Oberhammer, died after being hit by a snow grooming machine.

AP Sports Writers Tim Reynolds and Tom Withers in Whistler contributed to this report.

LOL he was lip-synching and missed his cue to start.

The Georgian team was understandably somewhat subdued when they made their entrance.  All the team members wore a black scarf in remembrance of their fallen teammate. The TV commentators said that after the team wanted to do the official entrance, and that they had been given special permission to leave the ceremony once that had been done (an understandable request on the team's part).

EDIT: Donald Sutherland as the Narrator's voice =

Sarah McLachlan "performing" = :twothumbs

EDIT 2: Aaaaaaaaaaaaaand at the end of the show, one of the arms of the icicle sculpture that is the Olympic "Cauldron" fails to work when it's supposed to.  :sweatdrop:

Summary of the Ceremony:

Started out nice, countries coming in. Some hot sporty chicks, all that. Then BANG, wtf! :huhuh What's going on? Fiddlers? Wolverine? Step dancers? A flying dude for 563025 minutes. Boring. Yawn. High aussie producers. More boring shit, then.. Bobby Orr! Finally something awesome. Shit was going on track.. NOT! Boring ass Opera is suddenly on. A dude whos a chick who looks like a dude singing Cohen's song. ;_; But what you remember, is the last part. Nash, Gretzky. <3 Shit not working right. That chick being left out (LOL hahaha). Finally.. Gretzky lighting the big ass outside torch aswell. So all of moog can see the olympic flame.

Some of the best commentary pieces from NBC and ESPN.
-"This was perfect!" (After the mechanical fail)
-"60 000 people mesmerized by this breathtaking performance" (During the wtf dude flying)

Basically. I was not impressed. Moogs tax money, LOL. Luckily, there's no doubt in my mind that the actual games will be anything like the ceremony. The games most certainly will be fucking awesome.

I'll be following my fav winter sports: Hockey, Women's Figure Yu-Na, Curling, Biathlon and might check out the Luge, Skeleton, Bobsleigh and Snowboarding stuff.

Fiddlers? Wolverine? Step dancers?
Representing a part of Canadian culture and heritage...tattoos and body hair notwithstanding. :P

A flying dude for 563025 minutes. Boring. Yawn.
Yeah, even though that part of the show was meant to represent the area of Canada that myself and KT are from, I found that part of the show a bit weird.

A dude whos a chick who looks like a dude singing Cohen's song. ;_;
XD
That was Canadian singer k.d. Lang. She's a lesbian...of the grossly butch variety.

I actually really enjoyed the ceremony. It was cool with the screen on the floor and the water and that guy floating everywhere... Plus Sarah McLachlan was there! :w00t:

I'm probably going to watch each event just because I have nothing better to do, but I'm mainly looking forward to the the figure skating and snowboarding. :)

I'm still really sad that Michelle Kwan's not there because she's my favorite athlete. I've been a fan of her for over 10 years (since about 97/98, so about 12 years. Sheesh.) and have been wanting to see her get an Olympic gold medal for forever now, but she won't ever get one. =/

Just a quick thing about Nodar Kumaritashvili, a very very tragic story.  Whenever something like this happens, it always makes me think that no matter how bad I think MY life is, there are worse things happening around the world to other people.  That's why its so pointless to talk about the positive things in life, and not about all the stupid crap that you THINK is making your life miserable.  People at work making you mad?  Boo hoo.  Kumaritashvili got killed doing something that he loved to do, shooting for a goal that he worked most of his life for.  I feel so incredibly sorry for what happened, but I also keep in mind that he was a hard worker who did his best all the way until the end.  Rest in peace, the world will be thinking of you for the duration of the Games.

lol i knew we never could up Beijing's. Beside, Beijing exceeded everyones expectation because they were trying to show the world their power and what not. and you get crazy performances like that.

Vancouver's were trying to show the spiritualism and what not of our city and the chugs. It was a pretty good opening except the end with the hydraulics fubar and gretzky getting pissed off at the hooligans

Quote
Mogulist Alexandre Bilodeau won Canada's first ever gold medal on home soil laying down a near-perfect final run at Cypress Mountain on Sunday.

"I went out and I knew what to do," Bilodeau said immediately following the event.

The 2009 overall World Cup champion executed a back full off the top air and a perfect-scoring back iron cross off the bottom air to earn a score of 26.75.

Dale Begg-Smith, competing for Australia, took the silver medal. American skier Bryon Wilson claimed the bronze medal.

Bilodeau, of Rosemere, Que., has topped the podium six times at previous World Cup events. The 22-year-old has often said his brother, Frederic, who has cerebral palsy, has inspired him to push his limits.

"It's really getting me right now," Bilodeau said. "My brother is my inspiration. Growing up with a handicap puts everything in perspective.

"He taught me so many things in my life. I was one of the most surrounded guys.

"I have great friends in the stands waiting for me. I've got everything on my side. Everything is perfect.

Really awesome how he talks about his brother being his inspiration to push himself. Korea almost swept the medals in the 1500m short track speed skating, until the guys who would have placed 2nd and 3rd bumped into each other and slid off the track on the LAST turn, giving the United States silver and bronze.

Totally unnecessary mistake as well  :nervous

Korea is doing great at regular speed skating as well. First silver on the 1000m for men. Yesterday gold on the 500m for men! And maybe tonight again with Lee on the 500m for women? Let's see and find out!

Turns out there's Canadian gold in these hills after all.

Jon Montgomery of Russell, Man., ended a night of heartbreak, despair and perhaps embarrassment for Canadian sliders with two remarkable runs down the fastest track in the world to win his head-to-head battle with the indefatigable Martins Dukurs of Latvia and claim a skeleton gold medal at the Whistler Sliding Centre.

Sitting in second place going into the third run, Montgomery was faced with the prospect of chasing the sport's version of F-1 star Michael Schumacher: a technician with a powerful start who does not drive himself into mistakes.

Montgomery more than answered the challenge with a track-record third run and a fourth run that was just enough to hang on for a win by seven one-hundreths of a second.
FULL ARTICLE LINK HERE - http://www.ctvolympics.ca/skeleton/news/newsid=47097.html (http://www.ctvolympics.ca/skeleton/news/newsid=47097.html)

Now for anyone who didn't see the event, Montgomery was actually the second-last competitor to go during the final round. Dukurs had the final run of the event, so Montgomery had to wait before he knew what colour medal he'd get. Here are links to videos of both of their final runs. Watch Montgomery's first, and Dukurs' second, in order to get a proper impression of how the live broadcast actually went down. Remember that you need to have Microsoft's SilverLight (http://silverlight.net/) installed for the videos to work.

The Koreans beat out Apolo Ohno again in the 1000m short track speed skating. Ohno was making a great move on the inside but he got bumped and slipped, causing him to fall back to last place. The Koreans took advantage and moved up to the top two spots. Ohno managed to get back up to the bronze position in about two and a half laps, pretty baller move.

I wanted Ohno to take the gold over the Koreans, because South Korea hates him lol. They gotta stop hating. Oh well, he raced a great race anyway, awesome recovery from the rear.

As a hockey fan in general, the Canada VS USA game that just finished was majorly awesome. Nevermind the rivalry the 2 nations share in this, but right out of the gate both teams played hard, full of drive and full of passion. Gotta give props to the USA defence and particularly to goalie Ryan Miller. They did a great job of frustrating our Canadian players and making sure that any shots that they did get would be turned away. The American forwards did a great job of forechecking and limiting what our guys could do. The entire American team played at their fullest and they totally earned and deserve this win. It was a fast-paced, intense game that is easily the most entertaining of the games so far.

*sigh*

Now with that being said...as a Canadian hockey fan...

Yay, I'm glad Ladies Figure Skating has finally started. It's the event I look forward to each Olympics. :D Mirai Nagasu's the one I've been rooting for since I saw her skate at the US Championships. She's just so darn cute. It sucks that she got 6th (I was hoping she'd place higher), but at least she made it to the next round. I was really impressed with Kim Yu-Na and Asada Mao as well, so I'm rooting for them, too.

8-2 Canada over Germany!  :canada:

Here are the 24 skaters that qualified to the Free skate on Thursday Feb. 25, 5:00 PM PST (Don't miss it yo!)

I think they scored Rochette a bit too high (sympathy points?) and Nagasa a bit too low. Miki Ando's score was also a bit higher than I expected. I'm not a Figure skating ref tho, lol. Also fun to see the other Korean move on, when I saw her skate I was like -"wtf, is it jr. olympics?" She looks like she's 10 y/o. XD

Yeah. I would have placed Mirai at #3 because I thought she was really good and I enjoyed her performance, plus I'm sorta biased. Plus I wasn't really watching Rochette skate. *cough* :ph43r:

Yeah, I haven't heard of "Ski-cross" either. Apparently it's similar to snowboard cross (i.e. a bunch of skiers racing each other at the same time) and apparently it's the newest sport to be added to the Olympic roster.

...un-freakin-believable... Sven kramer, i.e. the best skater in the world got disqualified on the 10k speed skating!

His coach gave him wrong instructions and he made a wrong turn  :banghead: He would've easily won it too in an Olympic Record.

I feel really bad for the coach.. how is he ever gonna recover from this  :O2

Props to Lee for an excellent race. Amazing, he missed out on the short track selection, so he started doing longer distances in September! That's 6 month's ago and now he has gold on the 10k and silver on the 5k!

Canada takes silver in women's 3,000m relay
By Sean Gordon, The Globe and Mail Posted Wednesday, February 24, 2010 7:43 PM ET

When it was over, the women in red skated around the ice arm-in-arm and waved to a frenzied home crowd, looking overjoyed and palpably relieved, satisfied and exhilarated with what looked to be a strong bronze-medal finish against the two mightiest relay teams in the world.

Jessica Gregg, a 21-year-old first-time Olympian from Edmonton, jumped into her coach's arms. Tania Vicent, a 34-year-old four-time Olympian from Laval, Que., hugged her friend and protégé, 20-year-old Marianne St-Gelais, of St-Felicien, Que., who now has two silver medals from her first Olympics (the other coming in the 500 metres, where Gregg finished a heartbreaking fourth.) Kalyna Roberge, of St-Etienne-de-Lauzon, Que., waved excitedly to her family in the stands.

Hughes skates to bronze in 5,000m
By Danny Celia, CTVOlympics.ca Posted Wednesday, February 24, 2010 5:43 PM ET

Clara Hughes skated the final race of her illustrious Olympic career in style, finishing with the bronze medal in the 5,000-metres race at the Richmond Olympic Oval.

Hughes skated a time of six minutes 55.73 seconds to shatter the track record by over two seconds, set by Martina Sablikova in March, 2009.

...

The medal is the sixth of her career, putting her in a tie with Klassen as Canada's most decorated Olympian.

In addition to her four speed skating medals, Hughes also won a pair of medals in cycling at the Atlanta Olympics.

Oh shit South Korea disqualified from the gold in the Women's Short Track relay!

Close race between South Korea and China, but at the end one of the Korean skaters obviously pushed the Chinese skater. Took a while for the refs to discuss, but in the end they disqualified South Korea. Sucks for them, they already did a victory lap lol.

Another great finish, Swedes just couldn't connect in the end.  Glad there was no empty net goal at the end.  What IS it with those?  What a killjoy.

So Canada and the USA will get their gold medal game with the ladies.  What are the opening odds?
Title: Re: 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver THREAD [spoilers/results inside]
Post by: daigong on February 25, 2010, 09:02:06 AM
The empty net is a balls strategy to bring on the extra attacker so it's 6 on 5, creates the scramble - that's how you get goalies scoring goals on the rare occasion.

USA vs Canada Ladies is pretty tight, considering US won the last World Championships. it's gonna be a dogfight, Julie Chen looks like a woman on a mission on the power play :shocked

MAN. This is why hockey is my fave sport.

The fuck just happened? I'm still stunned man. This sets up to be a ridiculous semi-finals.

SHIT. Swedes just weren't urgent enough, even with time winding down. The goalie doesn't get pulled. Slovaks just playing keep away. HOLY SHIT.

Jagr playing out of his brains for the Czechs vs the Finns. Man. Hard to believe dude is nearly 40. Finland vs USA is gonna be a low scoring one, Kipper had one of his A Games.

BUTT FUCK. Where the fuck did that Team Canada come from? Everyone playing with the grit and grind.

Team Russia and their Green Gloved KHL Mercenaries ain't getting it done. Grebeshkov of the Oilers actually shutting down Crosby!? FUCK REALLY?

Russian players diving and getting nothing done on the power play. Ovechkin just a shadow of himself until he got his hand ripped off by that puck. Russian Coach FUCKED UP. Shoulda pulled Nabokov when it was getting 3 or 4 goals.

This was incredible. Guys who got chewed up in the press played a helluva game. Cory Perry, guy who hardly hustled for the last US goal - got a pair. Morrow grinded it out and got some cheap bounces. Drew Doughty and Dan Boyle!! FUCK! creating turnovers and getting in the minds of the "Super Offense" FUCK!!! And Luongo making ridiculous stops, esp. that one where Semin or Malkin broke loose on the breakaway. Hell I'm nervous, each goal just blew roof off!! WHAT A FEELING!! GO CANADA GO :canada:

Ohno disqualified on the 500m short track! Had his hand on the dude in front of him, but the dude fell, so the refs probably thought he pushed the dude.
Canada gets the gold in the men's 5000m short track relay! Shit was so chaotic I didn't know what was going on half the time. Korea barely inches out USA for the silver.

So it's gonna be Canada vs USA again for the men's hockey finals.

CONGRATULATIONS TEAM FINLAND! :finland:

I comfess that the semi-final game against the USA hurt me so much that I pretty much stopped rooting for our team. After the most humiliating defeat in years I had absolutely no interest in the bronze medal game and I even bet against our boys. Yet I still got up at 5 am to watch the game. I don't even know why because I didn't even believe in our team anymore. I'm always crazy passionate about Finland's games but.... this time I didn't really feel anything. I don't think I've ever been so calm during the last few minutes of a close game and the impact of the victory hit me long after the game was over. When the medal ceremony began it finally hit me that this was the last national game for many great Finnish players. We're never gonna see guys like Teemu Selänne, Jere Lehtinen, Saku Koivu, Ville Peltonen etc. represent Team Finland again. I grew up watching these guys so it's gonna feel weird when they're no longer around. I might have been all negative an' shit but fuck it, I'm truly happy for our guys. Thank you for all the great memories, Team Finland!  :twothumbs

OH CANADA!!!!!!!!!!! :canada:
I love HOCKEY!!! Man that was the most fucking electrifying game I have experienced in a long time. This is why I love sports.

This win ranks as one of the best I have experienced - with all the Stanley Cups and personal achievements. Nearly shit my pants jumping outta my seats, dammit eating those nachos earlier.

Team Canada had the solid veterans - Brodeur, Pringer, and Edmonton born Captain Niedermeyer - and was the calming presence needed on a team that matched the USA for youth and speed. Who'd thunk that a shitload of players from those epic World Junior games would be facing off in the best World Tourney for all the chips.

Gotta hand it to crosby, dude came in through the clutch - he was constantly double teamed but one break down and BOOM Miller was crying:

This was like THE ULTIMATE TEAM GAME. Not just a few megastars like a Lemieux or Lindros or Gretzky. But all the pieces playing the role! SHIT WEBER. TOEWS. There's your bonafide superstar. Even The Sharks Line clutched up when it needed too. Normally I'd be boooooooooooooooooing Luongo but LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOooooo is all the rage. :canada: :canada:

Gotta give it up the USA grinding and taking it hard to the goal. IT'S A TRAP!!! This is gonna be a rivalary for YEARS to come. The grit, the CANADIAN style of hockey - blocking shots, grinders, epic goalies - has influenced all nations and its ANYONE'S tournament man.

Awesome to see Messier, Gretzky, Kurri in the crowds. Lowe with Team Canada. Mad Props to Finns for coming back!! Look at Kurri ready to plant a wet one on Joni Pitkanen:

lol Luongo idolized Grant Fuhr

and  to Selanne. All time Olympic scorer.

Now they all go back to their American teams and help win a Stanley Cup lol

WASHINGTON (AP)—President Barack Obama owes his Canadian counterpart a case of beer.

Obama made the friendly wager with Canadian Prime Minister Stephen Harper before Sunday’s U.S.-Canada gold medal game. Canada beat the United States 3-2 on Sidney Crosby’s overtime goal.

White House spokesman Robert Gibbs said President Barack Obama had a case of Yuengling, a Pennsylvania regional brew, riding on the game. Harper wagered 24 bottles of Molson. The beer battle pitted Canada’s oldest brewery against the oldest beer maker in the United States. Molson Canada is now a subsidiary of Molson Coors Brewing Co., a marriage of Molson and Denver-based Coors.

There was no word on where the cross-border exchange would occur.

I like this tweet: @heylandsberg    if 85% of canadian tv viewers were watching the game when sid scored, i want to know what the heck the other 15%...

That's like 26.5 Million Canadians watched. get it while you can!! relive the moments:

Edmonton will host Olympic gala

Canada's medallists from Sidney Crosby to Jenn Heil will be honoured June 28 at Commonwealth

By TERRY JONES, Edmonton Sun

It's going to be Canada's own personal Olympic Winter Games Closing Ceremony.

A June 28 gala slated for Commonwealth Stadium started out as the seventh-annual Hockey Canada Foundation champions golf tournament and banquet. It's developed into the astounding event, revealed in detail Thursday, to celebrate all of Canada's 26 Olympic medal winners and a chance to salute the Canadian military as well.

In a matter of days, as ticket sales began yesterday, expect it to be heralded as another total triumph for Edmonton.

”I believe it's going to be like the Heritage Classic, that it will be of that significance,” said Doug Goss, the man who chaired the outdoor hockey event in Commonwealth Stadium and chairs this one as well.

“It's something that will be once in a lifetime and we want to do it right.

It's going to be two and a half hours you don't want to miss,” said Goss.

Titled “Canada Celebrates” for short and “For The Love Of Country And For The Love Of Hockey: Canada Celebrates Our National Heroes” officially, the intention is to fill Commonwealth Stadium with 60,000 fans for the multi-pronged tribute June 28.
