Title: The Heavy Metal Thread!!! \,,/
Post by: SomethingWild on September 17, 2009, 06:49:17 PM
Since the 'rap thread' is so big.. gotta provide some counter weight  :P j/k, we're all into other stuff. That's cool.

This music was such a big part of my youth... I was angry at the world and this music made the soundtrack of my life.

It started with Morbid Angel, Cannibal Corpse and Nile:

MORBID ANGEL - Enshrined By Grace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FaPSvujka3E&feature=related#ws-normal)

Cannibal Corpse - I Cum Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nFnIJZyBhi0&feature=channel_page#normal)

Nile - Execration Text music video (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LNQpLFns-CA&feature=channel_page#normal)

Then onto Cradle of Filth

Cradle Of Filth - Cruelty Brought Thee Orchids [Live] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vIMt9mAnhCs&feature=channel_page#normal)

Best performance ever. Truly an amazing band.

Then it became more melodic with old school Children of Bodom

Children Of Bodom - Downfall (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=su0dkHstMYI&feature=fvst#noexternalembed-normal)

And Epica! I was pretty good friends with one of the guitarist, but he recently left the band.

Epica - Fools of Damnation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=csYBwZPCleY#normal)

Proper metal! None of that Linkin park stuff  :smhid XD

Between The Buried And Me - Obfuscation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OspGO0YVeRI#normal)

Fuck yeah, new BTBAM album, The Great Misdirect, out on October 27, 2009.

Will it continue the pure concentrated awesome that was their previous album, Colors?

Based on Obfuscation, sounds pretty fucking likely.

fuck yeah stryfe, didn't even know about that.

Recently got into the band Protest the Hero.

Protest The Hero - Sequoia Throne (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ypCdGNe3Bvs#normal)

Their old stuff was more metalcore though

^Epic vocals, I like the diversity.

I don't really know BTBAM, but based on that vid they remind me of In Flames.

Protest the Hero sounds pretty cool, not sure about those clean vocals though lol.

BTBAM might sound like In Flames at times, sure, but they're really nothing alike. BTBAM's roots are in metalcore, but nowadays they go all over the place with their music, mixing all kinds of fucked up genres together... They had country and polka interludes on Colors lol.

Quote
In September 2007, the band released their fourth studio album, Colors. The band has said that "it's a 65 minute opus of non stop pummeling beautiful music... we have described this release as 'new wave polka grunge.'" On their website, they have also described it as "adult contemporary progressive death metal."
XD

...

Colors Live DVD was fucking awesome too btw, did you grab that Sits?

Between the Buried and Me - Colors Live DVD [1/11] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=iN74dEaD08A#ws-normal)

The sound quality is amazing. It's sick how good they sound live despite the complexity of the music.

...

Speaking of live DVD's, I gotta leech Opeth's Roundhouse Tapes right now...

I'm actually surprised how many excellent metal dvds there are.

The Arch Enemy live DVD has epic sound quality (which is wasted on YT haha).

Arch Enemy - Live Apocalypse - Part03 of 18 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K6LQ6SOgCcI&feature=related#normal)

And CoB's dvd was pretty good, even though their previous tour had a much better setlist:

I'm particularly fussy when it comes to Heavy Metal. I can say hand on heart that I can't stand death metal/black metal/horror metal or any variant of it. Old-school metal is what I like best. I'm not a huge follower of what the scene is like at the minute but I'd have to say the best band right now is Machine Head. Bad attempts at nu-metal aside, The Blackening is an intense, heavy, riff-laden, head thrashing album that gets better with each listen.
Title: Re: The Heavy Metal Thread!!! \,,/
Post by: SomethingWild on September 24, 2009, 02:06:06 PM
^Gotta agree on The Blackening. Even though Machine Head isn't really my kind of band, the production on thata lbum is amazing. I love the guitar sounds on that album. The songs are pretty kick ass though, combined with the angry lyrics it makes for a great metal album.

The new Megadeth is pretty good as well, much better than (at least) the previous two. Even though I'm not that big on Mustaine's vocals.

Very nice thread!  I'll post a few more obscure metal bands that need more attention:

Anata
Anata-Downward Spiral Into Madness (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RIueKHJE1GM#normal)

Obscura (note the fretless bass action!)
OBSCURA - "The Anticosmic Overload" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mesr2siegRg#ws-normal)

Arsis

Blotted Science (an entirely instrumental project)

Quo Vadis
Quo Vadis - Silence Calls the Storm (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ep_9S9WH8TI#normal)

If anyone is interested in finding more metal bands like this, just let me know.  I got tons more.

Moved this quote here so we won't stray off topic for too long. :P

Haha, thanks.  I actually found it when I was waiting for the Immortal to leak.  The release date for the Immortal album was on the 25th, and it didn't leak until the 22nd.  I swear, I was so pissed off.  What's worse is that the album wasn't as good as their last one.    I was waiting for the new Scar Symmetry album to come out (which it kinda already has), but the Myspace preview of it is bad enough for me to not even bother downloading it.  Right now, I'm waiting for the new BTBAM, Slayer and Freak Kitchen (among others).

I didn't have a clue Immortal released a new album, it's like seven years from their last one... I was big into black metal all through upper secondary, but not much at all as of late. I still give Emperor's first two albums the occasional spin, Dissection, that sort of thing.

Dissection - Night's Blood (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Enwzb34xu4Y#normal)

Ahh, good times.

...

Can't think of any other metal albums I'm really looking for other than BTBAM right now, well at least nothing that's about to get released soon and I can still remember. I listen to too much different shit, I can't keep up with all the genres.

I also heard a bunch of songs from the new Megadeth album at my bud's and I was surprised how good they sounded. I gotta grab it later and find out if it can touch Rust in Peace.

...

Fave metal songs, part #1343243:

At The Gates - Terminal Spirit Disease (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHfTNS81Xlc#normal)

...

Shit gotta chill with the ton of tube vids on one page I think... XD

Immortal's release before this new album was back in 2002.  It's easily my favorite Immortal album.  I'm not a huge black metal fan, but that particular album is just ridiculous.  The new one is just kinda flat throughout.  Nothing is grabbing me like the Northern Darkness album did.  My favorite Dissection album is actually the one most people hate - Reinkaos.

The new Megadeth has Chris Broderick on lead guitar, and he rips!  He's also one of the coolest guys you can talk to.  He's one of the few guitarists that'll actually take the time and answer your questions on the forums he has set up.  That said, I think the new Megadeth album is on par with the last three releases.  Nothing will ever touch Rust in Peace or the entire Friedman era, for that matter.  Sneap did an amazing job on producing and mixing the album, though.  It's probably Megadeth's best tone to date.

Also, AtG = Amazing!   Easily THE most influential melodeath band out there.

Shit, my buds played Tyrants on my birthday party ALL the fucking time lol. I hadn't heard that song in ages.

I actually read a Chris Broderick interview a couple days back in one local music mag, and he did seem like a really cool, down-to-earth guy. And yeah, the guitarwork I heard sounded really fucking good, although I was kind of wasted at the time.

Yeah AtG is the shit. I particularly love TSD and The Swarm to death, although I love their other stuff too. Fucking killer guitar harmonies.

...

One more before I gotta pass out.

Medeia - Cold Embrace (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wNuXBgNPutY#normal)

They're taking it so seriously!  XD

New Hypocrisy does sound pretty dope! I haven't been really listening to them much after Final Destination. Maybe I should do some catching up.

...

MESHUGGAH - New Millenium Cyanide Christ (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=4A_tSyJBsRQ#normal)

Immortal - Call Of The Wintermoon (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-VBdAY8eA9w#normal)

And then pretty much anything from The Black Dahlia Murder after their debut album.  Those guys always have crazy music videos.  :D

lmao, don't get me started on black metal videos

Immortal - Blashyrkh (Mighty Ravendark) - GOOD QUALITY (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=32n1AK6o5i0#normal)

Agreed x3!

I'm a massive Jason Becker / Marty Friedman fan. I'm really into shred stuff.

Cacophony (M.Friedman , J.Becker) - Speed Metal Symphony (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WCM1oOy4BN4#normal)

That cacophony stuff is beyond epic. Too bad the vid/audio quality is mediocre.

My top 5 guitar idols are:

Paul Gilbert
Marty Friedman
John Petrucci
Yngwie Malmsteen
Jason Becker

 :thumbsup

If you're into those guys, you should check out the Blotted Science album if you haven't already.  Ron Jarzombek really rips it up!  Ron actually played with Marty on his Exhibit A/B thing when he did his new live album in Japan.

Marty Friedman - Dragon Mistress 1 (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lWunja5AHxw#normal)

Ron even builds his own guitars.  8)  Harmonized sweep picking =
Title: Re: The Heavy Metal Thread!!! \,,/
Post by: SomethingWild on September 29, 2009, 07:02:03 PM
^Ah yeah I've heard of Ron. That's a great performance!

I also dig Ohmura Takayoshi:

Takayoshi Ohmura : Pleasant Surprise Live (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mcsxpVI3EZM&#normal)

Top 5 would be:
Hizaki (Versailles); He does some haromonized sweeping with Teru, awesome stuff.
Malmsteen; legend. Saw him live and it was just amazing. I don't care if he has an ego.
Friedman: love his Jpop remixes. The songs he did with Nana Kitada are epic.
Becker: Best ever. Too bad he got ill.
Vai: another legend, even though he relies on his wacky sounds a bit too much.
...there are so many awesome guitarists out there.
Title: Re: The Heavy Metal Thread!!! \,,/
Post by: Code001 on September 29, 2009, 07:13:41 PM
Ohmura is great, and his technique is easily the best I've seen, but he can be a touch robot at times.  Most of his influence is from Malmsteen, obviously.  There seem to be lots of Malmsteen clones, especially in Japan.  Not exactly sure why.  My favorite album from Ohmura is his Emotions in Motion album.  It's very well put together, and he's able to reserve some shred, unlike some certain guys.

Some more guys to check out:
Stephan Forte (Adagio)
James Malone (Arsis.  He shreds AND sings)
Muhammed Suiçmez (Necrophagist)
Christofer Malmström (Darkane)
Lord Tim (Dungeon/Lord.  Awesome power metal bands)
Gus G (Firewind)
Rob Marcello (Danger Danger and a bunch of others.  Totally 80s!)
Mattias IA Eklundh (Freak Kitchen.  Probably the most hilarious shredder ever.  Easily the best usage of harmonics in guitar playing)

Talk about oldschool here!  30+ minute youtube video!

Mattias Eklundh - Freak guitar demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Vxq0xvSJojw#normal)

Then there are people like Greg Howe, Marco Sfogli, Guthrie Govan, Andy Wood, etc. that aren't metal, but they're ridiculous guitarists.

^I remember that vid  XD Those Caparison guitars look sweet. I wold love to try one. The guy from Arch Enemy has a similar one. Epic tones.

Thanks for the list, I'll check out the ones I haven't heard of.

I like Gus G. He seems like a nice dude and he has great vibrato and pinch harmonics as well. Love this lick:

Gus G- Betcha can't play this (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9jHCZIWZhmI#normal)

I'd also like to add Michael Romeo and Shawn Lane to the list. This lick is also epic:

Michael Romeo: Sea of Lies (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PG2804ggsI0#normal)

And you probably know MAB:

Michael Angelo Batio 4 Guitars (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rcc7IL18m0I&feature=related#normal)

 He's good, but completely uninteresting imo. Maybe a bit entertaining because it's the top.

You like Caparisons?  8)

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/Code001/Guitar/IMG_1113.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/Code001/Guitar/IMG_1113.jpg)
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/Code001/Guitar/IMG_1112.jpg (http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v393/Code001/Guitar/IMG_1112.jpg)

It's from the second year Caparison started out as a company.  They didn't make them long in this finish.  Ironically, it's the hardest finish to take a picture of.   Hell, it was only recently that they brought back the TATs.  Chris Amott played a blue version of this during the first half of his career with Arch Enemy before he got his custom signature model.  I bought it with EMGs, but I've replaced them with a PH-R/Cool Rails/Hot Rails.

Romeo is just fucking sick.  He'll be shredding it up and not even break a sweat.  I really dislike MAB, but the guy can definitely play.

[Caparison pics]

No... fucking... way.

I'm so jealous right now  XD They're almost impossible to get here. I've never even touched one.

I own some Fender Japan models (strat and katakana, the flying V one, from 1985!) and and ESP V. And a Washburn, the one used by Emppu from Nightwish, but it needs upgrades. I used to be into the EMG81s and the Dimarzio Evolution, but lately I'm getting more interested in the Seymour Duncan pickups.

I'll write some more later, but I really g2g  :P

I also dig Dragonforce. I always get crap for that but I think they're fun and innovative. They cleaned up their act in a live situation as well! I was here -->

\m/ Death \m/

Florida Death Metal

Obituary - Cause Of Death (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sdfD8dgCk90#normal)

BarrieV, Chris Amott has a signature Caparison Dellinger.  It's pretty much a stock Dellinger with a fancy graphic, thicker neck and Hot Rails in the neck/middle.  His old Iceberg was a TAT (stands for Through and Through).  It's a neck-thru guitar with alder wings.  I've owned over 15 guitars, but I only have 5 at the moment, and only 4 of them are actually playable (the 5th one being a POS Squier that was my first guitar.  Can't sell it because it's such a POS).  Right now, it's the TAT, RG1527, Fender Classic Floyd Rose Strat and ESP M-II.

Hopefully we don't derail this thread too much by talking about guitar gear.  XD

To make up for it, MORE METAL!

Mors Principium Est - Orsus & The Oppressed Will Rise (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MB6-LwJn2Pg#normal)

Mercenary — 11 Dreams (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PnjeWhQaJL0#normal)

Electric Wizard - Funeralopolis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sO7VP34n2Ps#normal)

And before I forget, Lane was a god amongst men.  A seriously ridiculous musician who'll be missed in the guitar world.

Some good examples of guitar shredding, and that's all well and good, but now I think it's time to bring a little percussion into play. Most notably with another favourite metal band of mine, Mastodon and their drummer, Brann Dailor. The drums for 'The Wolf Is Loose' is near orgasmic

I didn't really get into Slayer until around South of Heaven.  I'm not a huge fan of them, but except for Diabolus, they're fairly consistent, and they pretty much defined the thrash genre.  My favorite album by them is South of Heaven, followed by Reign in Blood.

Here's some more thrash:

Divinity recently finished recording their new album "The Singularity," and it'll be out in December.  Check out one of the completed tracks:

http://www.soullessdesign.com/divinity/03_Lay_in_the_Bed_Youve_Made.mp3 (http://www.soullessdesign.com/divinity/03_Lay_in_the_Bed_Youve_Made.mp3)

I know the one guitarist, so I'm trying to support them.  8)  Amazingly, the album's concept is similar to the concept I'm doing with my solo album.  Go figure.     For the geeks out there, they used an Axe-Fx w/ a DI and re-amped it with a 5150 III + a Mesa cab.  Cleans, effects, weird noises, etc. are all Axe-Fx.  Guitars were an EBMM JP BFR 7 and a Blackmachine 7.  You can get more info if you search the Andy Sneap forum.

Speaking of local friends; I sometimes hang-out with the drummer from Textures:

Not a big fan of the vocals, but they are known for their unusual rhythms.

His B7 is actually a special one, too.  He got it a long time ago, and the body wood is some 40+ year old mahogany instead of the normal Swamp Ash.

New band I'm currently listening to:

CENTAURUS-A - The Praying Mantis (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rdoM9V_k5s#ws-normal)

It's not every day that you see a tech death guitarist rocking a goldtop LP.  8)

Holy crap.  Did I just see...vibrato?!  It's like the first time BTBAM has ever included vibrato in just about any of their recordings.  Pretty interesting seeing the Mesa Roadster and Egnater Rebel 20 is the background.  Also, in case you're not a big Perfume fan, the song is called "plastic smile" and is off their GAME album.  :inlove:

^I love the look of those guitars! His tone is kinda similar to Syu's tone.. like, a bit nasal, not that open.

edit: after watching some vids, I definitely prefer Syu's tone over Akira's. Of course, that doesn't make him any less of a great guitarist.

My favorite solo is actually Tornado of Souls.  I can't think of anything more perfect than that.  It starts out melodic, goes into those eastern scales/modes he loves, and then it's flat out shred.

As far as tone is concerned, Syu's tone sucks, IMO.  It sounds like a pure modeler direct to a PA to me.  Advanced to Fall isn't bad, but Beyond the End of Dispair is thin, One for All - All for One sounds like he forgot to turn his wah pedal off, Reincarnation is compressed to hell and The Flag of Punishment just sounds like a POD to me.  Akira's tone can be boxy and harsh at times (especially live), but some of his earlier tones were flat out killer.  Don't be fooled by the classic 80s production.  Most of today's stuff is brickwalled to hell anyway.

Going melodic this time:

Nightingale - Nightfall Overture (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E_Rs_K6LOTw#normal)

Swanö is pure genius.

Can anyone recommend some good instrumentals? To me, while it seems an obvious choice, nothing can go better than Orion by Metallica.

Orion - Metallica (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZbUJilAbPQA#normal)

Great riffs, a bass solo, precision playing and turns into something otherworldly at the middle that just can't be topped when you're listening to it with a clear night sky above you. R.I.P. Cliff Burton

Yeah there's a ton out there... you got all the Metallica ones I reckon... Just a couple more:

In Flames - Wayfaerer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hto3Qp_PQNw#normal)

For some nostalgy value. I was really into Jester Race when it was released back in '95.

MEGADETH - Into the Lungs of Hell (HD Audio) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NVN17kapKl8#ws-normal)

More nostalgy.

Pelican - March to the Sea [1 of 2] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2HgNJ3TpmHU#normal)

Pelican is all instrumental, "post-metal" you might call it. Just one example track.

BTBAM and Perfume = WIN

Yeah I got the live DVD. haven't watched all of it yet though.

Speaking of "post-metal" I like me some Isis.

Isis - Not in Rivers, But in Drops (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rdtMkKaSmGs#normal)
edited the video to a different one. Didn't realize it was some WMP visualization crap lol. This song isn't as good though... Red Sea is that song that got me into them.

Also old topic, but I really really like the clean vocals in Protest the Hero. It's different from most metal bands, and his range is fucking insane.

Isis is good shit man.

Some other "post-metal" or sludge acts I'm digging.

Mouth of the Architect - Generation of Ghosts (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nRKa5_glaYc#normal)

This was my fave band of the kind for 2008 as I wrote in this thread (http://forum.jphip.com/index.php?topic=17903.msg534109#msg534109). For the impatient the song properly starts at 1:55. :P

North - Ghosts Among Us (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MUi8W16UPO4#normal)

And North likewise mentioned.

As you can probably tell I'm more into newer metal. :P
Unearth
Unearth - "Zombie Autopilot" Metal Blade Records (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hYnz0U2RCDs#normal)
This song is just so damn fun.

And here's a band I just discovered a few minutes ago looking through Youtube :P

I got some more YT vids to watch  XD

To break the YT trend a bit (please don't stop entirely haha), which have been the best and worst metal gigs you've seen live?

The best one for me was Children of Bodom on the HCDR tour, they played a lot of old stuff and the sound was perfect, which is kinda rare. Arch Enemy is a close second, amazingly tight playing.

Worst gigs include Nile, you could only hear bass.. tons and tons of bas. And Dimmu Borgir, the drummer couldn't keep up and the whole set was a mess.

Deicide was kinda funny, because they are supposed to be 'evil' but they just stood there smiling the entire time.

Best - Sonata Arctica.  This was before Jani was kicked out of the band and before they made that abomination called Unia.  The energy was great (except for the bassist who just stood there with a blank stare the entire time in the back of the stage), the singer's pitch was ridiculous, and it was the best live tone I've heard in person at a concert hall.  It was a smaller venue, so the energy was awesome.

Worst - Hard to say.  I know it's not metal, but when I went to the G3 concert, Petrucci was so loud that I got dizzy.  He fucked up my hearing so much that I couldn't hear Satch or the jam afterwards.  I couldn't even tell what he was playing because it was so loud.  Everything sounded like white noise.  My hearing was shot for a few weeks after that.  On the other hand, I went to the first Gigantour, and everyone decided to have a stupid loudness war.  After every band, everything got louder and louder.  In case you don't see a pattern here, I'm not a fan of really loud concerts.  When you have to grimace or hold your ears just to stay in the hall, it doesn't become enjoyable.

Best:  Entombed played in this small club here in '99 right after Nicke had fucked off to concentrate on Hellacopters. Right from the start they blasted everyone to hell with Eyemaster and wouldn't slow down. They were playing like they had something to prove.

Worst: Bruce Dickinson's solo gig, prolly after Chemical Wedding was released, so '98 I guess. Well the gig was cool, I think, but as an experience... I was wasted all to hell, raging in the front, and almost threw up on Bruce Dickinson's shoes when he got close to the edge. I was so fucked up I missed a part of it though. What I remember was nice, they played a bunch of Iron Maiden too, at least whatever Bruce had composed.

...

The Great Misdirect is brilliant, but I really expected no less. Funnily enough my fave track is probably I really dig Desert of Song.

Desert of Song -Between The Buried And Me (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_vE0FuRlwI8#normal)

Best not pick faves so soon really, it was perfect for the moment though.  :P

Here's something that's rather random and note, random could also be referred to as awesome. Thespian actor, Christopher Lee, has recorded a concept album on Charlemagne, with metal band Rhapsody helping out. Click to hear samples (http://www.buzzfeed.com/avclub/coming-soon-the-christopher-lee-fronted-symphoni-oi7). Don't expect any power metal in this though, it's more rock opera than shredding guitars. Don't know if I would like the actual music but the concept behind it sounds amazing

Besides my beloved J-Pop there´s also some other stuff like... umm... Metal. (If this is what you would call it I call it deathcore some of you may know what it is.

Here is something very hard, from a Band called "Of Salt and Swine". They release their debut album on 27th April. Can´t wait for it since I love their music XD
Here´s a promo video of their new album.

i've been getting into some old thrash lately (sadus, pestilence, etc) - my progression into the heavy stuff happened in such a way that i sort of missed those bands the first time around...i went from suicidal tendencies, death angel (speed metal) to sepultura, slayer, anthrax, megadeth and some metallica, but before i had a chance to become a hardcore metallica head, i was introduced to napalm death's 'harmony corruption' album and was litterally like this  :shocked...soon after i heard deicide, morbid angel, and obituary (cause of death was the first album i heard)...was big into death metal (still am and always will be - i've been into metal since motley crue's 'shout at the devil' came out - i had it on vinyl   :twothumbs )

Children Of Bodom is coming to the Netherlands again in March. They used to be my unquestioned fav band, but now I'm not even sure if I should go. I've seen them three times so far and the crowd was really annoying the last time. Support acts are Ensiferum + Machinae Supremacy.

Cloudkicker is one man progressive metal project from the artist B.M. Sharp, heavily influenced by math metal and post-metal.
Sharp utilizes drum machines and custom tuned guitars in his recordings.

This be some really cool shit. Like it says, mathy instrumental metal, with quite a lot of variation within that term.

Usually not a fan of deathcore kinda stuff (not a fan of the xcorex genre), but the new Whitechapel isn't too bad.  They don't do the retarded breakdowns as much on this album.

Whitechapel - "Breeding Violence" BlankTV Music Video Premiere (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1TFdBysrgRA#ws)

It's interesting seeing the 8 string movement starting to gain some momentum.  I'm still waiting for a good straight brutal or tech death band to use 8 string guitars, though.

The problem is, Alexi doesn't think the old stuff is good.  In an interview, he said he doesn't even care for Hatebreeder or Follow the Reaper.  Those are like their strongest albums they've ever released and what define the Bodom sound...

In other news, the new Serenity has leaked:

From blabbermouth.net                                                                                                                                                             Due to damages caused by the 8.9-magnitude earthquake and subsequent tsunami that shook Japan early Friday morning left more than a thousand killed and many more missing, British heavy metal legends IRON MAIDEN were forced to cancel all of their previously announced shows in Japan.

IRON MAIDEN's Japanese promoter Creativeman has issued the following statement regarding the band's Tokyo shows this weekend:

"Following the cancelation of Saturday, March 12 show, IRON MAIDEN's show scheduled at Saitama Super Arena on Sunday, March 13 is now canceled as well, due to obvious safety concerns towards the audience, the artist, and the venue, caused by the earthquake of Friday, March 11. Your ticket for Sunday, March 13 will be refunded. Please contact Creativeman after Monday, March 14 on the refund process. Apologies for any inconvenience caused. TEL: 03-3462-6969 (12pm-6pm weekdays)."

The members of IRON MAIDEN and their crew were flying into Tokyo from Seoul, South Korea following their show there. On approaching Narita airport in Tokyo, IRON MAIDEN's specially chartered plane Ed Force One was advised to re-route to Nagoya as the earthquake/tsunami had just become apparent. The bandmembers stayed the night in Nagoya and following the announcement of the cancelation are preparing to fly out of the country.

IRON MAIDEN bassist Steve Harris has released the following message on behalf of the band to the band's fans in Japan and all who have been affected by this terrible disaster:

"We are extremely saddened by the calamitous events of the last day or so which led to the cancelation or our two shows in Tokyo.

"Our deepest sympathies go out to everyone affected by this disaster — our fans in Japan, the people of Japan and those in many other places suffering from the tsunami. We are also aware that a number of fans flew into Tokyo from various parts of the world to see a MAIDEN show there and we hope you guys are safe and sound.

"We have had a long relationship with this wonderful country and have always been made to feel most welcome — this would have been something like our 16th tour.

"Our sincerest condolences to all those who have suffered and to the families and friends of those who tragically lost their lives."

Hey you guys , i didnt know there was even a metal topic here on this forum since i only come here for the gravure idol :)
Anybody listen to Amon Amarth here? I know them recently and they are awesome!
Here's a video to demonstrate:
Amon Amarth - Where Silent Gods Stand Guard (Live) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qRah0RPniic&feature=related#ws)
Anyway can anybody explain to me what the hell is a breakdown? I've never listen to metalcore before...

Amon Amarth rules.  8)

A breakdown is when the song slows down to about halftime feel.  The trend is to throw in a sub drop when they kick in.  Here's what breakdowns are:

NEW Top 10 Deathcore Breakdowns (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=IX6yBXsZgkg#)

The one at 1:20 is the prototypical breakdown.  I don't mind when it's once in awhile, but it happens in like every single damn song.  It gets really annoying.  Hardcore vocals are also usually pretty lame, too.

New Obscura - Continuation of their last album and still kicking ass, unlike a certain other tech. death band that hasn't released an album since 2004...

Haven't posted in this thread for 2 months.  Let's see what's new:

New Symphony X isn't bad.  The second cd is better than the first, in my opinion.  Fairly solid overall, and Romeo has his best tone yet:

SYMPHONY X - The End of Innocence (ICONOCLAST) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=qkfdgc5vP8U#ws)

New BDM was actually a let down.  Only a few good songs on that album.

New Rhapsody delivers, as always:

Rhapsody Of Fire - From Chaos To Eternity - 02 - From Chaos To Eternity + Lyrics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=v2bUSSn1YuI#)

The one guitarist of Obscura and former guitarist of Necrophagist released his instrumental solo album.  It's pretty killer:

Christian Muenzner - Maybe Tomorrow (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kMh25zmyb7U#)

Finally, the new Arch Enemy album is solid, but it seems a bit rehashed.  Sneap did a great job on the production aspect, though:

ARCH ENEMY - Yesterday Is Dead And Gone (OFFICIAL VIDEO) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rRkc08_dR-0#ws)

That's enough for now, I think.

Suffocation - Infecting The Crypts (Effigy Version) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xHXKVlD_X1o#)

they did these songs when they played with deicide on the once upon a cross tour  >:D  :guitar: - the mosh pit for suffocation was crazy, part of me wanted to go in (there were just too many people to make my way down there by the time they came on) and part of me is glad i didnt, it was brutal

It sounds like a typical Arch Enemy album, but a good one at that. I dig it a lot.  :twothumbs  Best one since 'Doomsday Machine' imo.

The 'A Pale Horse Named Death' album is pretty cool too, albeit a bit repetitive.

Decapitated's new album "Carnival is Forever" is AMAZING.  It's the best metal album so far, IMO.  The tone is crazy good, the playing is super tight and it has some real cool atmospheric solos going on.  I was a bit worried how they'd continue without Vitek, but they really came out swinging with this.

I'm in a bit of rut when it comes to music at the minute. I want to get into new bands and so I watched the music channels for inspiration. I knew I wasn't going to find anything and sadly I was right. Only thing that came remotely close to what I like was 'Perfect Weapon' by Black Veiled Brides. But It was just derivative and did absolutely nothing for me. And their whole image that I see their fans go crazy for and say is original has already been done years before and done much better IMO by other Japanese visual kei bands. But then it appears the majority are pre-tween boppers who don't know better. In fact, in the video for Perfect Weapon they perform in front of a crowd and all of them are just pre-tweens. I lol'd.

So anyway, I've been looking and asking a friend of mine and I thought I'd share a few videos of songs/bands I really liked at a first listen and will look more into:

The Sword - Definately an old-school sound, like Thin Lizzy with a little added Black Sabbath. Really digging it.
The Sword - Night City (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E39p-0l11Kc#)

Threat Signal - Savage guitar! Was headbanging my way through this and a nice melodic breakdown too.
THREAT SIGNAL - Through My Eyes (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bk7QzVrfT-U#ws)

Machinemade God - Now this? This is the kind of music I want to hear more of at the minute.
MACHINEMADE GOD - Forgiven (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=DCQbidHdIks#)

Heathen - 5:45 of riffgasms. Lead singer sounds like Bruce Dickinson
Heathen - Dying Season - Evolution of Chaos [2009] (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=x5lYC__1xMs#)

And finally:

The Agonist - Ok I'm quite shallow with this, cause I like this video for no other reason other than Alissa's hot! Looks like an angel, sings like an angel, but also screams like a devil. XD I really wanted to like this band so much, but I'm not really feeling the music. This song and their others just sounds like it has no structure and is all over the place. But that's me, if you're into the whole monster growl throughout then this might be alright for you, not so much for me. But hey, at least Alissa looks good!

THE AGONIST - and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep (OFFICIAL) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aXzIeI0mkFI#ws)

So after searching and trying to find my place, I think I'm more of a fan with melodic/thrash metal than anything, so still on the lookout. Oh and metal bands with hot female leads if my last vid is anything to go by. Now if I can find a melodic metal band with a hot female lead, I'll be laughing!

FLESHGOD APOCALYPSE - The Violation (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xjKyzwqIT7s#ws)

I haven't been listening to a lot of metal lately (excluding Versailles), but I. f'ing. love. this. band.  :twothumbs
Arch Enemy's sound is great, but I've heard enough of it. It's more of the same. Epica has had some member changes and I'm sorta bored with their stuff as well. The Agonist combines the best of these two favorite bands of mine, but with a new fresh sauce. Maybe I like the sound because I'm not familiar with any bands in their genre  Either way, I've been playing their album a lot lately.  :skull: <-- added to make post more metal.

I'm really into Killswitch Engage lately. They've just about the right mix of screaming and clean vocals with some nice riffage to hold my interest. More specifically, their album Alive Or Just Breathing when Jesse was still the front man, is fucking incredible. I'm not one of these people who gets into a fight over whether or not Jesse or Howard is better. Personally, I knew about the band when I heard songs like My Curse, The End of Heartache or Rose of Sharyn, all awesome songs, so I always see the band with Howard in mind. I think both are great, but there's definately a lot of strength in Jesse's work as well. I just really like the fact that as heavy as the vocals and the music can be, the lyrics are actually rather positive and uplifting. People say that they're a Christian band because of it and well frankly, those people are idiots. A few of my favourites off the album:

Killswitch Engage - Numbered Days (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=EJlHTKSH3JU#)
Killswitch Engage - Self Revolution (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FHBSqLWgJPw#)
killswitch engage (The element of one) *LYRICS* (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wyq77mUq3Yg#)

Also yesterday, I saw a tween wearing a Black Veil Bride t-shirt. Wanted to go over and smack some sense into him. It only strengthens my theory that all Black Veil Bride fans are tweens.

I mentioned how much I was liking Killswitch Engage to a friend of mine and he told me that Jesse and Adam D actually had another side project on and released an album last year. Called Times Of Grace, it sounds very much like early KSE work, but...not. The screams are still there, that distinctive KSE metalcore sound is there, as is the reflective and uplifting lyrics, but on the whole it's a lot more melodic and the emphasis is more on the clean vocals than the screaming IMO. I love it. In particular, Willing is an amazing song.

Opeth - The Devil's Orchard (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CVsrG-mSbgg#)

New Opeth is coming on September 16th. Bit of a departure, as the wiki states:

Quote from: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Heritage_(Opeth_album)
Heritage will signal a departure for Opeth from the musical style of their past albums. Originally, the first two songs Mikael Åkerfeldt wrote for the album were in the style of Watershed, but he scrapped them soon after. After writing "The Lines in My Hands" and speaking with Martin Mendez, Åkerfeldt decided to write the rest of the album in that style.

Heritage will feature no death growls, which have been present on every Opeth album except Damnation. Unlike Damnation, however, the music will have a prominent fusion influence. The album's title track is influenced by Jan Johansson and Swedish folk music.

And so forth. Well, they can do industrial polka for all I care, I'm sure I'd still make sweet love to it.

^Opeth are awesome musicians, so I'm sure it'll be awesome. I gotta admit, I'm not a die hard fan though.. a lot of their songs are so long and serious it actually can get a bit boring at times.

So I had to check em out, and true enough, they sound somewhat like early Mastodon. Everything else aside, I'm currently digging their 2006 album Millenarian:

A quote from british magazine, Total Guitar: Millenarian is " mostly about getting killed, eating greasy hash browns, having your blood removed and replaced with brake fluid; playing multi-necked guitars and the popularity of badminton."

The Times of Grace album is perhaps one of my favourites this year. I can't stop listening to it. But I also discovered, whilst looking for related stuff, that Jesse had formed another band prior to that called The Empire Shall Fall. The album's called Awaken and it's just as heavy as Alive.... If you thought Alive.. was primarily down to Jesse's strengths as a brilliant lyricist and singer, then you can pretty much expect the same here. And you know what, the vocal delivery may be even better than on Alive.... The rest of the band is pretty solid too. It's fucking awesome. And the good news is that a new record's in the making.

Just heard this band.  They sound promising.  A bit "core" at times, and a bit "Joey Sturgis" with the production, but it's not bad.  Apparently, they tracked the album in a machine shop.  That's pretty metal.

Molotov Solution - Injustice For All (Official) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kDUDj4KRHDg#ws)

This is a pretty interesting band that's doing something a bit different.  The bassist recently joined Obscura:

Noneuclid - The Digital Diaspora (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=de3elvJpAoI#)

Some DÅÅTH as I am really digging Eyal's playing lately:

DAATH - Day Of Endless Light (OFFICIAL VIDEO) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pn_aQwQUs2M#ws)

Finally, let's not forget that Anthem recently came out with a very solid album.  Great band representing some 80s-esque Japanese heavy metal:

Anyone else here who likes Ulcereate ?

This might be amongst the greatest and most interesting metal-drumming, i have ever seen:

Ulcerate is a really good tech death band.  For drumming, Peter Wildoer is great at creating some interesting drum lines for Darkane.  I really like how everything meshes with the lead solo, too.

Peter Wildoer - Organic Canvas (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=40vnWTfNot4#)

and if you want insane, it doesn't get much more ridiculous than Arsis' "We are the Nightmare" album.  Darren Cesca absolutely KILLED on that album.  I could have sworn it was programmed until I started looking into it.

Found out today that Metallica and Lou Reed are getting together and releasing an album this month. Now...it's not what you expect. Kirk has even said it's a musical project. An experiment. So try to come into it open minded. Having said that, I don't like it at all

Lou Reed & Metallica: The View (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8LWtb621DRg#ws)

While on the subject of weird crossovers, how about Zach Wylde collaborating with William Shatner, doing a cover of Iron Man? Seriously.

And now for some Gorguts

I'm pretty excited about their new album, which was announced for 2012. I hope it can live up to its predecessors.

not that much into this whole modern instrumental metal thing, but I really enjoyed this album. It offers a nice fusion of metal with many other musical genres ranging from jazz to techno.

The Empire Shall Fall released the first of 3 EP's today, to rave reviews (http://audiopinions.net/reviews/featured-artist-the-empire-shall-fall/), with the idea to bring them all together into one album next year. I'm pleased to say that it's fucking awesome. I encourage you all to give it a listen, the whole thing is streaming for free here (http://www.absolutepunk.net/artists/showlink.php?do=showdetails&l=22372), but will only be available for one week.

Again, I encourage you to listen. It's way different yet it feels familiar. Loving the tempo changes, it feels unpredictable and that anything can happen (and it usually does, a saxaphone on a metalcore song?!)

*EDIT*

Oh snap they even replied to me after I left them a comment on their Facebook page!

In surprising news, Howard Jones has been let go by Killswitch Engage

Quote
To our family, friends and fans: We have decided to continue on without Howard Jones as the singer of Killswitch Engage. We love Howard and are thankful for the nine years that we've had him in the band. Out of respect for everyone involved we will not be discussing the specific reasons behind this decision. Howard is a part of our family and always will be, and we wish him well. He has left big shoes to fill, so we certainly have our work cut out for us to find the next singer of Killswitch, something we plan on making priority #1 going forward. Most importantly, thanks to all of you for all the support throughout the years and for sticking by us for all this time. We really do appreciate it and we very much look forward to having a new record for all of you in the not too distant future that we can all be proud of. Sincerely, Adam, Joel, Mike & Justin.

So not only does the new singer have to sing Jesse and Howard's material, he also has to live with fans comparing him to those two. Yeah...good luck with that! Naturally fans are begging for Jesse to come back and while I would be lying to say that doesn't sound great, I really think it's better that he doesn't. I love The Empire Shall Fall equally as much as KE now and I wouldn't want to see them disband as a result, as the rest of TESF are also very talented musicians.

^ Not available outside USA :(

Speaking of female fronted bands, I have to give a shout out to EarlyRise. Their debut album is fantastic. So much so that it's hard to pick a 'best' song cause they're all pretty strong. The vocalist has an incredible voice, the lyrics are thoughtful, the guitar licks are heavy. Yep, it's all I want. My new favourite band. Pretty impressive for a debut.

So I guess I must be in a bit of a female fronted rock fetish at the moment XD Trying to find other bands out there when I discovered The Letter Black. They're very....Christian rock? Which I dunno, I can put the religion aside if the lyrics aren't obvious about it and the music's good. The songs I've heard thus far are ok, haven't really taken to them so strongly but I do like this song a lot.

The Letter Black - Hanging On By A Thread (Official Music... (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-zigHL2kw_M#ws)

Maybe I'm just shallow and will like most rock bands if they have a front woman with a decent voice and good looks :nervous There are exceptions of course, where the front woman is all that and the music's great (Earlyrise) and on the flipside, where the front woman isn't all that and the music's bad (In This Moment)

Religious stuff aside, the thing that ruins that band for me are the male vocals.  :nervous

Sticking with female fronted metal (and uninteresting male vocals), the new Lacuna Coil:

Lacuna Coil - Trip the Darkness [Single 2011] HQ + lyrics (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=WBTtWv5Cug8#ws)

Not hating it, but not digging it that much either. A bit too soft.

Female fronted metal is so popular in South America. This Mexican band toured with Epica. They use all the basic elements, and it I think this song is pretty catchy:

The Legion of Hetheria--The Ancient Ones (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=paZj7J231ug#)

I think their vocalist replaced Simone from Epica for one of Epica's tours in that region when she had some appendix troubles at the time.

Btw, anybody happen to have Infinite Dawn - The Enigma Of Reign? They're long gone, but their 4 songs were pretty good IIRC. lol

You'll never guess who the new frontman for Killswitch Engage is... (http://www.rocksins.com/2012/02/jesse-leach-reunites-with-killswitch-engage-14146/)

This is unbelievably exciting news. Alive or Just Breathing has become one of my favourite albums ever and with his work with The Empire Shall Fall and Times of Grace, you can see that Jesse still writes such amazing lyrics and if anything, his voice has gotten better. Absolutely cannot wait to see what the new album sounds like. Although I'm probably one of the few that have to feel for the rest of his bandmates at The Empire Shall Fall because I get the impression that many people just don't know Jesse kept on continuing with a KSE-esque metal band that was more experimental but equally as good IMO. Considering they didn't have a record label to do any promotion with them then I guess that is true. I hope this news doesn't mean that Vol 2 of Solar Plexus is delayed or even TESF is outright finished.

So it's official, Jesse's back. I won't bore you with the official announcement as it's pretty long and you can find it easy enough but I do want to point this out

Quote
The "new" guy himself also commented on his return to the band after a decade-long absence, saying, "It is a great honor to rejoin my brothers after all of these years. After some discussion and much reflection, it was obvious to me this was the path I was meant to take. We got together and jammed on the 'Howard-era songs,' as well as some Alive or Just Breathing-era songs and we all felt the synergy."

He continued, "I look forward to writing the new record, since the demos sound absolutely amazing, as well as breathing new life and getting comfortable with the soulful songs Howard has written"

I never really caught onto that aspect of it til now but it's really interesting nonetheless. Makes sense considering Howard's been covering Jesse's stuff and it would be a kind of douchebaggery to disregard his work completely. I'd love to hear Jesse's interpretation of something like My Curse or Rose of Sharyn.

And got official confirmation from The Empire Shall Fall that not only is Jesse staying with them but they're currently at work on Solar Plexus Vol 2 & 3. It just gets better!

Dragonforce are back with a new vocalist and a new album The Power Within, including the new single Cry Thunder:

DragonForce - Cry Thunder (HD Official Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU4GXgaCFTI#ws)

First thoughts:
- Pretty slow song  :nervous
- New vocalist isn't bad, but now they sound like a stereotypical power metal band even more
- It has a nice hymne feeling to it which is sorta cool

They're doing a big tour as well. Gotta check out the album before I decide to buy a ticket.

edit: "Best album we ever did" my ASS. It's pretty unmemorable... barely has any of the speed and gimmicks that made Ultra Beatdown so epic. It's not bad, but just not that I was hoping for I guess.

Manage to finally give Unto The Locust a full listen through. I like it as it's own record but it didn't quite grip me as much as The Blackening did when I first heard it. Though it definately has it's moments. I Am Hell is as blisteringly fast you would like for an album opener, the breakdown for Locust is awesome, This Is The End is an instant favourite and Darkness Within is just an epic, life affirming song that's beautiful and heavy. Specifically it's the latter two tracks that let it down for me, there's nothing in Pearls For The Swine that I connected with as easy as the rest of the album and This Is Who We Are isn't the best way to close an album, especially when you compare it to A Farewell To Arms which may be the best album ending song I've ever heard.

So slightly mixed feelings on the whole package, but overall some awesome songs that I really enjoy. Probably my favourite at this stage is This Is The End. Thrash metal at it's heaviest. A lull period in the middle but comes roaring towards the end with an ending that has me headbanging every time.

The most interesting thing, at least to me, about Jesse reuniting with Killswitch Engage was to see how he would handle Howard's songs. Well now we know:

Killswitch Engage - Rose Of Sharyn (Live at Rock Am Ring 2012) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=FUPpWXCNIM8#ws)
Killswitch Engage - My Curse (Live at Rock Am Ring 2012) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QvkFMa0TJ1I#ws)

No use in directly comparing Jesse to Howard, they're both different takes on the band. If you have to, then you can say that Howard perhaps had the best all round vocal range and because of it he was very able to cover Jesse's material and he was awesome, but to me, I prefer Jesse's song writing and lyrics than the majority of stuff put out by during the Howard-era. Plus his voice is pretty badass too, and he's only gotten better since the early days of KSE especially his clean vocals. It's just funny reading the comments below the vids because it's just constant fanboys for both going at each other. And those who are saying he's going to ruin his voice again with all the screaming clearly hasn't heard his work with The Empire Shall Fall which he's been doing for a while. Just shut the fuck up and enjoy both.

New Cloudkicker's been out on bandcamp for a while. Great stuff as always, not as heavy as Beacons or the older stuff, but heavier than Let Yourself Be Huge, at least. And free of charge, naturally.

The Sword's new album Apocryphon is pretty sick. Doesn't stray too far off the path of what they've done before but then why would they want to change it up when they make some awesome songs like this?

New Killswitch Engage album 'Disarm the Descent' is coming out 02-04-2013. Which got me stupidly excited thinking it was out in a few weeks but then you Yanks love your MM/DD format. *sigh* So a bit longer to wait and teasers like these make the wait all the harder.

And that's on top of a very promising early review (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dYlq6AkSkbk)

I'm so fucking excited. I'm loving what I'm hearing already. Jesse is now one of my favourite vocalists ever and Alive or Just Breathing, being one of my favourite albums. To hear him back with Adam D (aside from the excellent Times of Grace side project) and the rest of the band is gonna be awesome.

And it's off to a screamer! The first single "In Due Time" has got traces of all you know and love about KSE. The lyrics move away from Howard's relationship issues, thankfully.

Killswitch Engage - In Due Time (OFFICIAL) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BsXi4C1KkrE#ws)

Fucking idiot fans in the comments section comparing Jesse and Howard again. :banghead: I think what I like so much about Jesse singing in KSE, is that the harmonies between him and Adam D go along really well together. With Jesse's voice stronger than ever, both for clean and harsh vocals, it shows that off even stronger. It'll take a lot to top or even equal the quality of Alive or Just Breathing, and I'm not saying this will. But then it doesn't have to. But after hearing this and "No End In Sight", the signs are looking good for a kickass album

Having listened to all of Disarm The Descent a few times now I gotta say I love it. It sounds like it would be a direct follow up to Alive or Just Breathing and it's a welcome return to Killswitch Engage's heavier sound when compared to their last self titled record. Jesse's voice sounds as brutal as ever and has more range and the music is just what you expect between brutal and melodic. Love it.

Jeff Hanneman has died. :(

Our Brother Jeff Hanneman, May He Rest In Peace (1964 - 2013)

Slayer is devastated to inform that their bandmate and brother, Jeff Hanneman, passed away at about 11AM this morning near his Southern California home. Hanneman was in an area hospital when he suffered liver failure. He is survived by his wife Kathy, his sister Kathy and his brothers Michael and Larry, and will be sorely missed.

Slayer Guitarist Jeff Hanneman Dead at 49

Just over two years after contracting a rare skin tissue disease, Slayer guitarist and songwriter Jeff Hanneman died on Thursday from liver failure at a hospital near his home in Southern California's Inland Empire area.

Slayer made the news public on Thursday afternoon, announcing that the band "is devastated" and calling Hanneman, who was 49, their bandmate and brother. Twitter quickly filled with messages from fans and fellow musicians, many of whom were in Los Angeles for the 5th Annual Revolver Golden Gods Awards show at Club Nokia. Disturbed/Device frontman David Draiman was among the very first, posting "RIP TO A TITAN OF METAL," while drummer Mike Portnoy wrote, "WOW...I'm in shock...RIP Jeff Hanneman."

Hanneman has been off the road since early 2011, when he contracted necrotizing fasciitis -- most likely from a spider bite -- a quick-progressing disease that literally eats away at the flesh from deep layers of skin and tissue. Exodus' Gary Holt stood in for Hanneman starting in February of 2011, while Pat O'Brien joined the band when Holt returned to Exodus during 2011.

It's not known what role the disease played in Hanneman's liver failure.

Throughout the ordeal, Hanneman's bandmates expressed optimism that he would one day return to the group full-time. Bassist-singer Tom Araya told Billboard during last year's Rockstar Energy Drink Mayhem Festival tour that Hanneman was "free of the disease" and was "working on his playing ability...He's working on strengthening his arm and his ability to play." He predicted that Slayer would "probably get together and start writing together and start making a new album," the group's first since 2009's "World Painted Blood," with Hanneman contributing material.

But in February guitarist Kerry King told Australian press that "we don't know when Jeff's gonna be able to play guitar. Jeff's kind of like a wait-and-see thing."

Born in Oakland, Calif., and a devoted Raiders fan, Hanneman was raised primarily in Long Beach and became fascinated with wars and military campaigns -- themes he'd bring to Slayer's music -- via his father, a World War II veteran, and brothers who served in Vietnam. He met King in 1981 and decided to form their own band, mixing heavy metal and punk influences and signing with Metal Blade Records for Slayer's first two albums, "Show No Mercy" in 1983 and "Hell Awaits" in 1985. The group made an eyebrow-raising move to the hip-hop label Def Jam in 1986 for the covers album "Undisputed Attitude and the classic "Reign in Blood."

Slayer has released seven more studio albums and two live albums, as well as a pair of EPs. They've sold 4.9 million albums in the SoundScan era (1991-present), with the classics "Reign in Blood" (1986), "South of Heaven" (1988) and "Seasons of the Abyss" (1990) accounting for over 2 million of that tally. Ten of their albums have charted on the Billboard 200, with 2006's "Christ Illusion" being the highest debut at No. 5.

Hanneman, an ardent collector of World War II memorabilia, was at the center of the controversy over Slayer's supposed Nazi sympathies, stemming from the resemblance of the group's eagle logo to a Third Reich image and the shape of the S in the group's typography, and from songs such as "Reign in Blood's" "Angel of Death," about German doctor Josef Mengele and his horrific "experiments" at the Auschwitz death camp. But Hanneman frequently explained that the song was in no way intended to glorify Mengele. "I know why people misrepresent it," he told one radio interviewer. "It's because they get a knee-jerk reaction to it. There's nothing I put in the lyrics that says necessarily he was a bad man because to me -- well, isn't it obvious? I shouldn't have to tell you that."

Hanneman's songs have been recorded by groups such as Hatebreed, Children of Bodom, Hellsongs, Cradle of Filth and others, and sampled by rapper Styles-P. He's survived by Kathy, his wife of 16 years, sister Kathy and two brothers, Michael and Larry. Funeral arrangements are pending.

One of my guitar heroes is gone. RIP Jeff. The sky is turning red...

In more distressing news, Tim Lambesis (As I Lay Dying frontman) was arrested on the charge of solicitation of hiring a hitman to kill his wife (http://news.sky.com/story/1088095/tim-lambesis-singer-hired-cop-to-kill-wife). Absolutely fucking mental if true. Seemed like a really nice guy. Always innocent until proven guilty so here's hoping more clarification comes out of this. AILD is one of my favourite bands too. Horrible news to wake up to. Makes me wonder if I can ever separate this with his music. I mean, rockstars engage in a bunch of stuff I'm objectable to yet still like regardless, but murder, or solicitation to commit one? That's a whole new plateau that I wasn't prepared for.

Kvelertak - Blodtørst (official music video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r7sIqyoRFiU#ws)
Been listening to a fuck-ton of Kvelertak lately. What a fucking awesome band. Norwegian fuckers, playing a sort of a mix of heavy garage/punk rock with some occasional black metal thrown in. They sound a lot like a vastly heavier Turbonegro lol.

Their music videos be fun, even if they tend to be from their more "accessible" (less heavy) tunes:

Kvelertak - Månelyst (Official Video) (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=enrmDWVAZBw#ws)

As you can see, they're very attractive and stylish and shit. Couple more choice tunes I really dig from the epic first album:

Motley Crue to retire after 72-show tour
The Associated Press | Published Tuesday, January 28, 2014 5:55PM EST
Last Updated Wednesday, January 29, 2014 9:10AM EST

LOS ANGELES -- Motley Crue is hanging up its guitars for good.

The heavy metal band plans to say goodbye with a series of 72 concerts before retiring. The rockers made the announcement at a news conference Tuesday in Hollywood.

Alice Cooper will tour with the group. Tickets go on sale Friday with prices starting at $15.
"We want to go out with the four founding members of Motley Crue and go out on top," said lead singer Vince Neil.

"We want to leave a legacy," added Nikki Sixx. "We want to have some dignity."

The band members have signed a legal agreement promising not to perform as Motley Crue after 2015.

A Motley Crue country tribute album is in the works, as is a big-screen version of the band's 2002 book, "The Dirt."

wow, what a nice thread^^.
first kudos to Stryfe for posting Dissection & Code001 for posting Call of the Wintermoon!  (1st page)
i know its old stuff & posts, but i just didn't expect this here. sry i am still too narrow-minded!

i started with maiden at the age of 12, and still listening sometimes, but not too often.
few years later marduk and immortal came, wich were my favorite BM bands.
Still like marduks music though, but i do not like the attitude of the really bad-minded guys!
Immortal is harmless of course!
(watched each one of these multiple times, but i wouldn't go today anymore)
(oldskool european stuff for me. no modern stuff. might be ok though)

But today i like H!Ps stuff much more, even when i say that the music is most important for me.
