Jeff Carter traded to Kings pending physical
Defenceman Jack Johnson, conditional 1st-round draft pick would head to Blue Jackets
The Associated Press | Posted: Feb 23, 2012 9:04 PM ET | Last Updated: Feb 23, 2012 9:15 PM ET

Jeff Carter is on his way to Los Angeles.

The Los Angeles Kings acquired the centre from the Columbus Blue Jackets Thursday night for defenceman Jack Johnson and a first round pick in either 2012 or 2013.

The deal is pending both players passing a physical Friday.

...

The move to L.A. reunites the London, Ont. native with fellow centre Mike Richards. The pair helped the Flyers reach the Stanley Cup final in 2010.

Brewing some Jets pride
Special Budweiser beer made with Manitoba water
By: Geoff Kirbyson | Posted: 02/23/2012 1:00 AM

Call it nectar from the hockey gods.

Starting Monday, Winnipeg Jets fans will be able to crack open their own "fan brew" as Budweiser launches a limited edition of its world-famous recipe made with Manitoba water.

Back during the euphoria of the Jets' home opener on Oct. 9, Budweiser took water from historical landmarks in Winnipeg, including The Forks, the MTS Centre and the Manitoba legislature, put it in a container and took it around town to be blessed by hockey fans.

Some of that water was even poured onto the ice surface at the MTS Centre by Jim Ludlow, president and CEO of True North Sports & Entertainment.

"In honour of the historical return of the Winnipeg jets, we have bottled the pride, passion and energy of all Jets fans in a commemorative fan brew," said Dan Chubey, district sales manager of Labatt Breweries of Canada, which produces Budweiser in Canada.

Just 24,000 two-fours of the fan brew have been produced and they'll be sold at about 100 beer vendors and MLCC locations beginning on Monday. The fan brew will be sold only in specially marked 12-can packages, each of which will come with a numbered certificate of authenticity. Chubey said he expects they'll be gone within a couple of weeks.

An exclusive launch will be held Thursday at the downtown Tavern United location.

Chubey said Budweiser fans wouldn't be able to tell the difference between a can of its regular beer and the fan brew.

"The brewing process for the fan brew is identical to the regular Budweiser brewing process. We took the water from Winnipeg and transported it to our brewery in Edmonton that has been brewing Budweiser for 30 years," he said.

There will also be an official toast of the beer by Jim Ludlow and Bary Benun, president of Labatt, during the second intermission of the Jets game against the Florida Panthers on March 1.

It was once one of hockey's fiercest, if somewhat under-publicized and unappreciated, rivalries.

It didn't carry provincial bragging rights like the Battle of Alberta or the the Nordiques and the Canadiens. And it certainly didn't hold the historical weight of the Habs vs. the Leafs.

But the Winnipeg Jets vs. the Edmonton Oilers did serve up its share of compelling storylines from the days of the World Hockey Association to the NHL's departure in 1996.

Truth be told, even with this old matchup being revived for the first time in 16 years Monday night, the oomph could be lost as puck-drop at the MTS Centre will come on the same day as the craziness that surrounds the National Hockey League's trading deadline.

But all that won't stop us from taking a little stroll down memory lane with a look at what we think were some of the great moments in the Jets-Oilers rivalry.

(Jets fans might want to shield their eyes: Much of this history is lopsided, as some decent local squads were steamrolled by the Oiler dynasty of the 1980s. Proceed at your own discretion)...

Khabby been saying lotsa great things, he might get the start tmr! "This is where it all started for me," Khabibulin talks about his return to Winnipeg (http://ow.ly/9iwpm) ONE MORE SAVE! for the OIL!

LOL RON WILSON FIRED.

Stop listening to your fans, Burke.
And he's been replaced by Randy Carlyle.  He wasn't able to make a return visit to Peg Sheety with the Ducks this season, but we'll at least be able to see him for sure next season. :)

Carlyle replaces Wilson as Leafs coach
Friday, 03.02.2012 / 9:23 PM

Ron Wilson was fired Friday as coach of the Toronto Maple Leafs after nearly four seasons behind the bench and replaced by Randy Carlyle.

Carlyle, let go by Anaheim earlier in the season, will be behind the bench for Saturday's game in Montreal.

The move comes just months after GM Brian Burke gave Wilson  a one-year contract extension in late December.

"This was not an easy decision for me to make," Burke said in a statement. "I want to thank Ron for all of his hard work and dedication to our organization over the past four seasons."

The Leafs, solidly in the top eight in the East for the first two-thirds of the season, have won just once in their last 11 games -- the 1-9-1 slide has dropped them five points out of the final postseason berth with a 29-28-7 record. Chants of "Fire Wilson!" echoed through Air Canada Centre when the Maple Leafs lost 5-3 to the Florida Panthers on Tuesday night. They lost 5-4 at Chicago the following night after blowing a 3-1 lead.

Toronto has not made the Stanley Cup Playoffs since 2004, the longest postseason drought in franchise history and the second-longest active non-playoff streak in the League.

Carlyle was the coach and Burke the general manager when the Anaheim Ducks won the Stanley Cup in 2007. The 55-year-old former defenseman had a 273-182-61 mark in six-plus seasons behind the bench in Anaheim and led the Ducks to five playoff appearances.

Carlyle becomes the 29th coach in Toronto history and the 16th to have played for the Maple Leafs and then taken the reins as coach. The former Norris Trophy winner with the Pittsburgh Penguins played 94 games on the blue line for the Leafs from 1976-78 and had two goals and 16 assists.

"Although it’s always tough to see a coaching change, we are certainly happy for Randy. It was simply a matter of time before he had another opportunity to be a head coach in this League," Ducks GM Bob Murray said. "He’s a great coach, and we wish him the best in Toronto."

The Leafs hired Wilson in 2008, and they went 34-35-13 mark in his Maple Leafs debut, finishing 12th in the Eastern Conference. They were 30-38-14 and finished last in the Conference in 2009-10. Wilson had his first winning season with the Maple Leafs in '10-11, going 37-34-11, but that was only good enough for 10th in the East.

Wilson began his NHL coaching career in Anaheim and has also coached at Washington and San Jose. In 1,361 games, he has a record of 634-546-101-87, including 130-135-45 with the Leafs.
