As I wrote on a different forum once, I have no problem hiring out porn from the local video store, but wouldn't be seen dead hiring out an H!P CD.

Was that mm-bbs? Or DAMN? I can't remember the forum but I remember the post.

As for me, I tell my friends I like JPop and they're all like "such as?"; so I show them a few videos or play a few songs and they either say "that wasn't bad" or "that was shit". It doesn't bother me either way. I tend to minimise and close shit when people come into my room but that's more out of habit from danger wanking than embarrassment over H!P.

I tells ya if I were in Japan for the 10th Anniversary concert I'd be OADing with the wota. Sure, they're weird, social outcasts and most likely paedophiles, but their dances kick arse. And if you think about it, they're absolutely no different to all the rockabillies and the wannabe hip hoppers in Japan. They're just obsessed with something different.

The way I see it, their opinions won't change my personal feelings towards H!P, so why let their opinions bother me? Do you think other people are weird for playing video games? Unlikely. Do you think other people are weird simply because they like something you don't understand? Nope, you just get on with it. The same should be for H!P.

That said, in Japan, I wouldn't go around shouting out my love for H!P, but I wouldn't feel like a loser walking into the H!P stores, either.

I had some of my friends singing Sexy Boy at karaoke last night. The very people who can't stand Momusu.
The first time I ever heard a Morning Musume song was at karaoke. Two stoned Japanese girls I was with sang "Love Machine". Man, that was soo funny. XD

Pretty sure it was the "Morning Musume a Joke?" thread on JPS.

That's the key word right there, which makes it very different to rockabillies, hip hoppers, gamers..etc.

Short story time:
In class one day, and I ask the students to take out their colour pencils, and one girl pulled out her Morning Musume pencil box. I asked her if she likes Morning Musume, and she gave me the evil eye and said in Japanese, she wants a new pencil case, because she's grown out of them, but her mother won't buy one, and this student was 6.
So, what I'm getting at, it's all fine and dandy to be a fan, but to openly show it in Japan, would be like being an open and proud "Wiggles" fan in Australia. Way not cool!!

I did had this habit when I first began to like watching MM shows and anything related to them, i'd pause or stop and open a new window when my parents or sister barges into my room. I still do this sometimes maybe cuz its become a habit. But now I tell my parents that I like watching their programmes esp since my mom knows about them like ayaya and goto, she once came in when ayaya was on the screen and said "aa! ayaya desho? ayaya daa..." and left...
Watching Goto Maki's SOME BOYS TOUCH was alittle weird for me too... and Melodies I was like "oh no oh no oh noooo" at the kiss part. In school I totally wanna watch but feel really uneasy when my friends are beside me watching what I watch for some reason tho and I also try to hide my desktop background (all yossie or MM)... I guess I'm afraid my friends might mistake me for like liking girls or something

Wow. The hypocrisy.
As if nowadays sex in music videos was rare. For some reason, I bet they wouldn't say the same thing if you were watching random clips of random American pop singers going slutty. It would just be banal.

Anyway... I've never watched any H!P stuff with people around. Ah, except the Haro Moni live of "Koi no Hana" by Nacchi, and the feedbacks i got (by my friends) were "OMG she's so pretty!!1!"
If i watched "Ne~e?" (for instance) with my family or friends around, they would think i'm weird, i have no taste and like stupid kids' stuff. :)

PVs like "Aisucream" or "Some Boys" don't embarass me at all. Come on, you see that ero stuff everytime you turn TV on. I would be hella embarassed by Mini Moni's PVs though.

Well, you know the old phrase "people are afraid of what they don't understand".  So, since it's in another language, people think it's 10x worse for some reason.  I don't know whether it's deep rooted racism or if they just don't understand, but it seems to be a lot worse when I watch this kind of stuff rather than Britney Spears (which I used to like back in like, what? gradeschool? but that was back when she had a "pure image")

My sister thinks I'm obsessed with Japan because she's seen me enjoying some form of anime/film/game. So I guess by her logic, just by liking something that comes from Japan, must mean I'm fascinated on the country itself.

My experience with others and H!P/J-pop hasn't been great. I let a friend listen to Ayumi Hamasaki's 'Fly High' and she laughed at me for it. I'm not particularly open about it to anyone, usually if someone enters the room, I just switch off the music there and then as they would only ask what it was, and I don't feel I should explain it to someone who wouldn't understand anyway and just give me the funny looks.

Well, that is, of course, a sweeping generalisation. It's like saying all gamers are sweaty nerds who never leave the house, or hip hoppers are all sex crazed drug addict gangstas or rockabillies are all bike gang thugs.

So really, it's no different at all. I don't think all H!P fans are paedophiles, it's just that sometimes they take their fandom to extremes and it comes off that way.

Have you ever been a bit embarrassed to watch H!P stuff around others?  As a female I do.  Recently, stuff like Melodies, Some boys! touch, and Aisucreamu to My Purin have been coming out and when I try to watch it on my living room TV and my brother or my dad walks in, I feel embarrassed.  Has this ever happened to you?  [this thread is obviously more geared towards straight females but I suppose sometimes guys can feel embarrassed about it as well xD]

yes, sometimes.

But i don't feel that when i watch Real face PV xD (Kat-tun)

At first.  But then I'll turn on "Acchi Chikyu wo Samasunda" and remind whoever is around that no other top-ranked pop group in the world has released a song about the environment.

Really, if people have no problem watch a 17-year old Britney Spears prancing around in "Baby Hit Me One More Time," then they shouldn't have a problem with MM.  Unless if it's OK to be a sexy bimbo but not OK to be cute...

My friends at my old school all know I'm Jpop crazy and into H!P since I practically make them sit through the vids and tell me which of the girls are pretty and why
Now at my new school my friends just know I'm into Jpop but they don't know who and don't really care.
I miss my old school and friends :ONfarofflook:
On the bright side though, I still have my brother who likes H!P too. But we don't agree on which girls are pretty :p
For my parents, I usually pause whatever I'm watching just so they wouldn't ask me a bunch of questions I don't wanna answer. Plus it gets really annoying that my dad keeps calling any Asian girl as 'the ones from SPEED' all thanks to my bro's fandom a couple of years back XD
I don't know if I'm embarrassed since I don't hide the fact that I'm a fan. I just don't really broadcast it I guess.

I must change my opinion...
I just watched "Aisucreamu to My Purin" and I must say...
I got embarrassed even if I was alone! O.o
Sorry to all VUDen fans (I'm a fan too), but WHAT WAS THAT???
the costume, the coreography, THE FACES!!! >_<
I really don't mind the new "Ero" trend in the H!P groups of older girls, but please.... do it nice... and smooth... (Just like in GAM, see...)
Now THIS kind of PV gets me embarrassed... ¬¬'
I needed to put al least four letters... ¬¬'

I'm not embarressed of it, but I generally don't tell Japanese people I like H!P... there's just such a negative stigma attached to it here in Japan. It's unfortunate since actually I REALLY love H!P, it sucks that I have to keep it on the low-down.

I'm also into Berryz, Hinoi Team, Cute and stuff like Hoshii Nanase, Harenchi Punch, AKB48 and Yuko Ogura... and this is also frowned upon by the Japanese mainstream public.

But to me I get so much enjoyment out of listening and watching this stuff that I'm not gonna stop despite the negative consequences... I'm not gonna let a bunch of conservatives bully me out of being into the things I enjoy.

It's difficult to explain accurately but basically if you tell a Japanese person you like H!P they simply don't want to know you. They seem to find it kind of disgusting for an adult to be interested in idol singers. The Japanese say "kimochi warui" or "kimoi" to express this kind of feeling.

I guess if you are younger (maybe under 25 or something) people wouldn't find it disgusting although I imagine you would still get teased about it.

I'm not trying to put people off liking H!P by saying the above, I'm just saying what I've seen here in Japan with my own eyes since I started living here. Personally I will continue to buy H!P and other idol products since I enjoy them.

Well there is a lot of bullshit hypocrisy in Japan unfortunately... but I guess every country has it. I still enjoy living here for the most part, but I've given up on ever having any close Japanese friends.
