Don't forget about The Legend of Drunken Master (the original Chinese movie series, NOT the badly dubbed version of D.M. Pt.2  that Hollywood hacked and released a few years back).  :cheers  :JD:  :cheers

Andy Lau and Ekin Chan kick mad ass too.

I like some of the newer Kung Fu flicks where they're throwing fireballs and tornados and flying around stuff. They're usually violent as all hell. I'm not too hip to Hero and House of Flying Daggers though... if I'm watching a movie from Hong Kong whether it be Kung Fu or Action I wanna see blood dammit!

Fave films... too many to name... but Deadful Melody and I think it's called Butterfly Comet and Sword are both insanely violent.

SHIIIIIIT Bastard. You must've watched "Storm Riders" or some wack shit. They're just lame-ass Canto Pop singers who have stunt doubles and wires. Hell, they're not even good dancers. They only look so good thanks to Master Yuen Wo-Ping.

Wanna hear about what I (Hong Kong born) think about those Kung Fu actors?

Bruce Lee is the first to make it to the world.
Sammo breaks the sterotype of Kung Fu.  Fat ppl can kick ass too.
Jacky Chan make himself from a hero to a stupid clown.
Jet Li tried his best to keep it real for awhile.
Donney Yan is another real Kung Fu actor but never make it big.
Stephen Chow is just a Bruce Lee fan who got too much money to waste so he make himself a Kung Fu actor by producing Kung Fu Hustle.

Yuen Wo Ping tried to keep Kung Fu going but end up helping the wire fu more than the real Kung Fu.

But to most Chinese, Jin Yong (Kam Yung 金庸) is the one who affects Chinese Kung Fu the most.  He is the one who keeps people interest in Kung Fu.  He is the most popular contemporary author who wrote Martiall Art novels (武俠小說) with "real" historic background and the true Chinese personalities.  His books are the most popular among Chinese.  Most of the Chinese Wu Xia drama made these days are from his novels.  And all those Chinese fighting manga and stuff are heavily influenced by his novels too.  I can safely say without his novels, you will never see CTHD, and others Kung Fu movie, as if you never see Japanese can make a genre called Judo movie.  If you have time to read a translated work of his or if you can read the original, you'll see how the hell Kung Fu become Wire Fu.  Those great image work of wire fu are all inspired from his novels.  Just only now we have the technology to implement it, to make the Kung Fu movie more interesting.

How many ppl tell the style of fighting in an action movie?  There are many style of fighting but in a long run they will look so similar to each other in the audience mind.  So I think wire fu is a good invention, but to totally dump the kung fu and solely using wire fu is kind of going too far.  I wish I will see some real Kung Fu movies come up again.

Good take :thumbsup ytl!!

That's what I heard from my Moms. From all those Kam Yung 金庸 novels gives us all those TVB "mo hup" dramas, right? I don't know too much about that stuff and just grew up with Bruce and Jackie.

Sometimes I think Wire Fu and the Matrix style is ruining plain old Kung Fu. CTHD was just flying around. I mean, Chow Yun Fat is not even trained in martial arts!!!

Thx for the compliment.  I am glad that many people are still following Kung Fu movies and Bruce Lee.  I am born after his death so I never feel his influence.  But boy, am I glad that he totally changed people's perception of weak Chinese.  Since I am born in HK and grew up in HK, I am more exposed to Kung Fu stuff.  Actually during the 60s and 70s, there are many HK ppl practise martial arts, now only few new generation pratise it.

I found out there is a very good introduction of Jin Yong in Wiki.  I've read it myself so I can assure you those information is correct.  I don't know where can you find the translated novels of his though.  I strongly recommend his novels work.  There is none that I don't like.  Every novel brings out some different issues or morals that happens around you.

does jackie chan's movies count as kung fu??

personally i love to watch his very old movies along wit Samo hung. although their fighting arent really kung fu, but their stunts and tricks are fucking awsome to watch.

Those are still Kung Fu, just not as hardcore as Jet Li and others.  Jet Li was Shaolin Champion couple times in China before becoming actor.

I read somewhere (either in an article interview or in a book) that Jackie admits that hits style of movie martial arts is designed specifically to look good on camera.  It's meant to be show-y, instead of authentic and practical.  With Jet Li and Bruce Lee (and I think even the guy from Ong Bak, Fucking GREAT movie btw as long as it's subbed, not dubbed), the martial arts are more "authentic" in that you can actually use in a fight and kick ass with it.

First time I saw Sammo Hung I was like, "DAMN!!!"   :w00t:  :w00t:  :w00t:   He's an AWESOME fighter for a big man.  He definitely bucks the trend of martial artists having to be lean and muscular in order to be good, agile fighters.

Different from other martial arts, some style of Chinese martial arts builds upon experience more than power.  If you wanna still kick asses when you are 80yrs old, learn Wing Chun or Tai Chi.
Title: Kung Fu Flicks
Post by: Chan Ho Nam on April 22, 2005, 05:09:46 AM
Wing Chun is a true "street" or real world martial art. Got to protect the centre line. Bruce Lee's JKD is based on Wing Chun. Samo, JC, Yuen Biao, and the other Fortunes all have some background in it. Two of the best "true" kung fu movies (I think at least) also happen to star Samo. They are Royal Warriors 2, and The Prodigal Son. Those movies kick serious ass!

I NEVER skip chapters/fast-forward in any martial arts movie.  Sure the story might be hella stupid, but it's still a story.

i also reccomend Ong Bak. that's a kickin movie. the main actor did all of his own stunts (just like Jackie Chan, uh oh, watch out!)
and another movie is Kung-Fu Hustle (if you haven't seen it already) if you thought Shaolin Soccer was the shiz, this is one blew it away. what are you doin still readin my post? go and see it already!  :P

I picked up the DVD of it a couple of months ago. I agree, the movie is good. If I understood Cantonese, I think I would enjoy his movies more though. A lot of his humour is verbal, and it does not translate well to subtitles. Although they are better than a dubbed version. Is "Kung Fu Hustle" dubbed in the release for the theatres in North America? I know that "Shaolin Soccer" was dubbed, and it seemed a different movie at times, compared to the subbed version I have.

Omg!
I dont know how I've missed this thread.
I started watching kung fu flicks like when I was 9.
We watched drunken master at school and I was sold.
Then time went by and I bought my first movies which were some bullshit movies.

But then I got my hands to shaw brothers collection my friend had and started checking out these movies like shaolin martial arts with fu-sheng , 5 deadly venoms.
Other films I fell in love were Raiders of wutang , Mad monkey kung fu, iron monkey, drunken taichi ...

My fav actors are Fu Sheng and Kuan Tai Cheng.

I just borrowed the celestial's versions of teashop and shadow boxing. Looking forward to watching them.

Lone wolf & cub and Lady snowblood are really good too, but they arent kung fu flicks. Just had to mention those classics. :D

Deadly China Hero
Master Killer
Duel to the Death
Five Deadly Venoms
Strike of Death
Master of the Flying Guillotine (Highly recommended, a lot of cool fights, one of my favorite Kung Fu movies)

i grew up watching tons of Samo Hung and Jackie Chan movies. their OLD ones and i do mean OLD, like during 80s were very entertaining. They dont have a set style of fight. but it is their stunts and tricks wit weapons that entertains me alot. most people who watched those would agree wit me. that is why they were so successful back in the days.

the sad thing now is that they both are old. Jackie chan's movies nowadays are just below average. he can no longer pull those crazyass stunts like he did in his prime. i really wnana recommand u guys watch some 80s jackie chan and samo hung movies.

Yeah. New Kung Fu movies are all Matrix style. Fake. I'm rewatching all these 70's kung fu flix and even with all the cheezy FX, they still got skill. Everyone needs to watch:

http://www.dvdcult.com/rev_SuperNinjas.htm

So fuckin hilarious...with the dubbing, but the part where the ninja jumps on t op of the guys shoulders and just stabs him in the head. then when they were fighting the water ninjas, the whole scene where they wrapped them up in the mesh by gliding on water cracked me up. Classic movie. :lmao:

I learned a lot too. That ninjas originated from China. That they DO flip out and kill people (http://www.realultimatepower.net/ninja/ninja2.htm).

Yeah, like that's gonna happen. No disrespect to him or anything, but his actual acting skills are average, at best.  The only reason he's still getting any roles at all are because they require someone who can fight.  If he complelely stops doing martial arts movies, I won't be surprised if/when he drops off the radar.

I saw a rare Kung Fu movie last week, in Germany its called "Kung Fu Zombie versus Tigerkralle (Tiger Claw)", so I don't know its englisch name. It was about the hate of two families and the princess of one family and the prince of the other family fall in love and so a brutal war takes place, because both families don't want that love. At the end the movie becomes a horrormovie, when a Tiger transforms into the Kung Fu Zombie and takes revenge for his best friend on the last standing family.
The movie was very old, but very good. Does anyone know this movie?

P.S. : Sorry for my bad englisch, I hope you understand what I mean

Bruce Lee is an absolute legend, and I'll stop there (other wise I'll just keep crapping on).

Movie-wise, for me, it was definitely Once upon in China 2, that was movie that absolutely grabbed me (and a few of my mates, which lead to two chings, a honkie, a viet and a malaysian all singing the theme song aloud during physics classes in high school). The last fight between Jet Li and Yan Ji-Dan was just awesome.

And Tony Jaa is amzing, just saw Tung-Yum-Gung (is that how you spell it), amazing if the last bit where he fought with the elephant's bones (which was gay), the fighting scenes through out was amazing. The continuous scenes where he charges through the entire restaurant was incredibly shot. And I especially like the fact that he gets tired and slows down towards the top of the restaurant (as one would, smashing so many people along the way), this is how martial arts film should be shot.

I never liked Jackie Chan and his movies, and I never will.

Thanks for all the informative commentary on what is one of my favorite movie genres. I remember watching the old cheesey Martial Arts flicks on USA's Kung Fu theater, back in the day when cable was still pretty new.

My favorite movie is the 5 Deadly Venoms.

http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/fivevenoms.htm (http://www.kungfucinema.com/reviews/fivevenoms.htm)
The venoms team would later go on to do many other movies, all of which I enjoyed thoroughly. Its not groundbreaking or epicmaking or socially enlightening, but it is just good ol' ass kickin' fun!

I just watched "House of Flying Daggers". I liked it. Nice fight scenes. Ziyi is as hot as always. The story was sad, fairly obvious, but envolving. I think they went overboard on the green coloring in this film. Must be some kind of statement with that color. The male lead is Takeshi Kaneshiro. Is he Japanese as his name suggests? I don't believe I've seen a Japanese actor play such a part in a Chinese production. Usually they're villians. Is this a new trend in asian cinema? Anyaways this movie is worth a look.

I'm looking forward to Fearless. This is Jet Li's last movie? Is he going behind the camera now or leaving the business entirely? Should be a good movie tho.

Well I really like Shaolin Soccer that movie is hilarious!!!! I also like most the adaptions to Jin Yong's "Return of the Condor Heroes" especially the newest one the fighting is so exaggerated and awesome!!!

He is indeed, Japanese. He's a halfie, so he's actually tri-lingual. Yeah, he's awesome.

As for Fearless, it was fucking awesome. I'm looking to pick up a dvd or something, but I doubt it'd be out till it's out in the US. And it's not his last movie. It's his last martial arts movie. Complications with his health, I think.

I'm a sucker for anything with the "Three Brothers" -- Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung & Yuen Biao.

Three Brothers Montage:

I also love the crazy-ass "once upon a time when people could fly" silliness of over-the-top flicks like "Zu: Warriors from the Magic Mountain". Here's the trailer for that one:

Has anyone seen the movie with Sammo Hung and Donnie Yen called, "Kill Zone"?

Also, I'm looking for a movie with Sammo Hung in it. I saw a scene from it in the documentary "The Deadliest Art." In the scene, Sammo is wearing a blue robe and has a ponytail. He fights against a few guys, 3 I think, in a restaurant and they have swords. He's jumping and tumbling over and under all the tables and then picks up a bench and starts fighting with it. There's also a guy on the side watching who has long hair, big eyebrows, and a beard('caase there aren't very many of those in Kung Fu movies). I would've posted a youtube link to help, but I couldn't find it there. Anyone know what movie I'm talking about?

A Variety article just revealed a few new details on the untitled Jackie Chan / Jet Li project:

  • The budget is about US$70 million - pretty high for a "family pic";
  • Master Yuen Wo-Ping has been asked to handle the action - good looking fight sequences guaranteed;
  • -    Shooting is set for April - in Shanghai?
  • -    Jet Li will play two roles, the Monkey King and the Silent Monk - The Monkey King is the center character of classic Chinese fantasy novel "Journey to the West". He is the first disciple of the Tang Monk (Tripitaka), who is on his way to seek for Buddhist texts. Not sure about who is Silent Monk. - Alright, the Silent Monk might be the Tang Monk.
  • -    Jackie Chan will play the monk Tsa-Ho - aka. Sha Monk / Sandy, the Tang Monk's third disciple. The article does not mention the characters of Tang Monk and Piggy, his second disciple.

Wait didn't both of them retire from doing martial arts film. And Jet just recently for that matter. I don't think this is real. Probably just a fan wish or rumor. Has anything been confirmed legitimately? Though it would be hard to make a great movie with these two as their styles of movies are completely different except for hte great martial arts.

Neither of them retired. Jet even said himself in one(maybe two) interviews that Fearless wasn't his last movie and that he's been trying to do the movie with Jackie. Jackie is now working on Rush Hour 3. I saw something on one of those tabloid shows where they were talking to him for a bit about his back injury he got while filming.

I can't remember if my brother said it has started already, but filming for Ong Bak 2 has begun or is about to begin. This one is a period piece taking place in the old days. The film is supposed to feature Muay Thai(Or Muay Boran. I forget which one he said) combined with Khon dance. I remember hearing Tony Jaa say that he wanted to show more of Krabi Krabong. I hope maybe he'll do it in this one too.

I just copped four Chang Cheh classics and doubled my Shaw Bros collection. I haven't seen The Water Margin & The Blood Brothers yet but I love both Five Deadly Venoms & The Heroic Ones. Chang Cheh was definitely one of the greatest kung fu movie directors and I think that most of my favorite classic kung fu flicks are either directed by him or Lau Kar-Leung.

Anyways they have been showing some SB flicks on TV lately so I have been getting back into classic kung fu flicks. Yesterday I watched Five Element Ninjas aka Chinese Super Ninjas and I fucking loved it. CSN has some of the most creative fight scenes I have ever seen and the ninjas were fucking bad ass. Definitely one of the most awesome SB flicks I have seen so far :yep:

Here's a great interview with Gordon Liu. He talks about Kill Bill, Shaw Bros and Wu-Tang Clan.

I got lil' something for peeps who like both rap music and kung fu flicks. Wu-Tang Clan albums have always been full of kung fu movie samples but them dudes never really rapped about martial arts. A few years ago Moongod Allah and his homies released the first real kung fu themed concept albums called 'Ten Tigers of Kwantung' and 'The Return of the Ten Tigers'. Both albums are full of dope beats and references to various old school kung fu flicks. Highly recommended to all rap & kung fu fans :yep:

Sam Raimi Remaking House of Flying Daggers?

See, this is the problem with having a production company that seems to only do remakes of Asian horror films. When a story about you remaking a Chinese period action movie like “House of Flying Daggers” surfaces, people tend to believe it. And why not? The last I heard, Sam Raimi and his Ghost House Pictures were trying to buy the rights to remake that night I threw up in a bar from two years ago. Ah, memories.

Anyways, back to the rumor that Raimi is remaking Zhang Yimou’s “The House of Flying Daggers”, which originally starred Zhang Ziyi, Andy Lau, and Takeshi Kaneshiro and is set in ancient China. The original news, as far as I can tell, surfaced on MoviesOnline not all that long ago via a listing at Production Weekly. It said that Raimi was remaking “House of Flying Daggers”. That was enough to get the Internets all abuzzin’, and the rumor has picked up steam in recent days as more sites sign up to report is. Such as ours. Alas.

So why remake “House of Flying Daggers”? And how is such a thing even possible, unless you’re just going to set it in, say, the Wild West or something? Well no, that wouldn’t really work, given the premise of the original movie.

Of course this could all be wild and unsubstantiated speculation, so whatever. It’s a dull Tuesday, so go with it.

Just watched the DVD version of Ip Man.
I really recommend it, as I haven't seen any martial arts movie in the past few 5-10 years that I liked so much.

The moves are shown very clearly. And just seem to get the best angle to make you understand the move right.
It's set around the time when the japanese invaded China, so it is a little touchy on that subject.

Anyways, whoever you are. buy it:

Producer Eli Roth on RZA's 'Iron Fist'

Eli Roth, the horror filmmaker and co-star in Quentin Tarantino's INGLOURIOUS BASTERDS, recently gave Sci Fi Wire an update on development of his collaboration with hip-hop maestro RZA to produce the kung fu movie, THE MAN WITH THE IRON FIST. Although RZA is currently on a music tour, the two are presently working on the script. "I'm just sitting down with him, but Quentin has been mentoring RZA for years, and he's ready to do it, and he's directed music videos," said Roth. "He knows kung-fu movies the way Quentin knows kung fu and like the way I know horror movies; he's seen everything." Without being specific, Roth hinted that RZA is using iconic figures from the martial arts world while creating something unique that draws on his knowledge of film and music.

"He's got this whole movie figured out," Roth said. "But it's his own universe, his own world. It's got hip-hop mixed in with kung fu; it's got a multiracial cast; he's got people lined up and all of these martial-arts stars and choreographers he's already talked to about it. It's really going to be spectacular." Roth mentions that no time table has been set to move the production beyond its early planning stage yet and that the focus is only on getting the script right at the moment.

In 1987 Michael Jackson went to Hong Kong to spend some holiday time and he took the chance to visit the old Shaw Brothers studio to participate in a short promo stint for TVB. He posed in classical Shaw costumes and Long Yi made a photograph as well as a short video movie, in which Jackson presented kung fu techniques and worked with a sword as well.

Golden Harvest is back! … sort of

Golden Harvest, the once mighty Hong Kong film studio that produced dozens of classic martial arts and action films from Bruce Lee's FIST OF FURY (1972) to Tsui Hark's THE BLADE (1995) is making a comeback, at least in name. Beijing-based Chengtian, known in English as Orange Sky, has completed a takeover of Golden Harvest, now called Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment Holdings, with plans to begin producing new movies under the Golden Harvest Motion Pictures subsidiary.

Golden Harvest began as a small upstart Hong Kong film studio founded by disgruntled, former Shaw Brothers executives Raymond Chow and Leonard Ho in 1970. They quickly scored a major coup over their bigger rival when they offered recently arrived Hollywood actor Bruce Lee a more lucrative two-picture deal. The mammoth success of Lee's second film, FIST OF FURY, made Golden Harvest.

Despite Lee's subsequent death, the studio only gained momentum by using ENTER THE DRAGON as a launch pad to invest in Hollywood productions and by attracting and keeping emerging mega talents such as Sammo Hung, Jackie Chan and Tsui Hark. As Shaw Brothers faded away in the '80s, Golden Harvest emerged as Hong Kong's last great film studio with phenomenal output over the course of 33 years in the moviemaking business. They dominated the '80s and '90s with hits like MY LUCKY STARS, POLICE STORY, ROUGE, NAKED KILLER, and ONCE UPON A TIME IN CHINA.

Widespread apprehension, an exodus of talent and a steep decline in Hong Kong's box office power amid the territory's 1997 handover from British rule to mainland China took its toll on the studio and Golden Harvest's film studio closed its doors in 2003. They continued to operate as a film financier and manager of a chain of cinemas in Hong Kong and mainland China. According to chief financial officer Winnie Chan the new Golden Harvest is expected to produce two to four small to medium-sized films per year and co-produce and co-finance big budget productions. The company will also continue in its focus on the development of cinemas on the mainland.

Shaw Brothers restarts film production

Not long ago I was writing about the return of Hong Kong film studio Golden Harvest and now their former rival, the mighty Shaw Brothers is returning to the filmmaking business after nearly 30 years. But don't get too excited yet. While the studio has announced a slate of four new films to be produced through their Television Broadcasts Limited (TVB) subsidiary and partly shot on their legendary Clearwater Bay studio soundstages, no martial arts titles are currently planned.

SB's is kicking off with TURNING POINT, a HK$13 million crime drama directed by Herman Yau and starring Anthony Wong, Francis Ng and Michael Tse. The film is based on a popular TVB miniseries called E.U. Two other films to go into production this year include the ensemble comedy HOUSE OF 73 TENANTS, a semi-sequel to SB's blockbuster 1973 film HOUSE OF 72 TENANTS, and the tentatively titled young adult romcom LOVE EXPERT. Also in development is a period drama set for production in 2010.

A studio representative has told The Hollywood Reporter that the company is aiming for diversity, with an undetermined number of films comprised of different genres and scales. The rep also mentions that the company is targeting local audiences and aims to help out the local film industry by hiring Hong Kong actors and crew.

Although their film production unit has been closed since 1985, Shaw Brothers has remained in operation as a film distributor, theater operator and TV production company through TVB. Despite their decline in the late 1970s and early '80s that led to the closure of their film unit, Shaw Brothers is still Hong Kong's most successful movie studio with a library of nearly 1000 feature films dating back to the founding of their 49-acre Movie Town studio in Clearwater Bay in 1957 by Run Run Shaw and his brother Runme Shaw. Built upon a business savvy, family-run business started in Shanghai in 1923, Shaw Brothers was modeled after the Golden Age Hollywood studio system and attracted top foreign talent to quickly build up its production muscle. Shaws quickly became the region's top movie producer and maintained this position throughout the 1960s and early '70s. They produced films of every variety and scale with a distinctive, polished house style. Many of their films were the top-grossing hits of the era with highlights such as THE ONE-ARMED SWORDSMAN, BOXER FROM SHANTUNG, HOUSE OF 72 TENANTS, and THE WARLORD.

RZA Talks 'Man With The Iron Fist' and 'Last Dragon' Remake

There's a martial arts project I've been looking forward to ever since it was first announced - The Man With the Iron Fist. Back in July of last year it was revealed that Eli Roth and RZA would team up to make an old school kung fu movie and RZA would make his directorial debut on it. Not much has been said about it since then, but RZA was interviewed by The A.V. Club and not only gave a good update on The Man With the Iron Fist, but also talked about The Last Dragon remake that he's involved with as well. Neither of the projects have gotten a greenlight just yet, but both of them sound like they're moving along quite smoothly.

The Man With the Iron Fist will be a "bloody R rated martial arts extravaganza" that RZA developed after studying Quentin Tarantino for a few years and working with Eli Roth. He explains the inception story further to The A.V. Club mentioning that Roth came to him saying that he'd like to help him make it, telling RZA: "I just love it, I think the story is unique. I think it’ll be great for the genre." He originally wrote the script before Quentin did Grindhouse then went back and rewrote and polished it recently. "We got it done, complete, circulating through the system, and it should be all cracking up pretty soon." Here's more on it:

"I'm just going to say that I'm looking to make a real good movie for us, yo. I want to make something that… They said the album, 36 Chambers, by Wu-Tang, was new, different, and they said it helped propel the hip-hop community. I would love to do that somehow on film. I would love to make the same mark or impact, and I'm striving to do it with this film as my first serious directorial debut. And I'm going to tell you that we put a lot of time into the script, a lot of energy into it, a lot of people were supporting me on it, and if the energy comes out right, it should be a classic film to have in your library."

One The Last Dragon front, RZA confirmed that he and Samuel L. Jackson had joined the project as producers and would also star in it, as first announced last October. On this project, though, RZA says he read the script and thought it needed some work so he have gave writer Dallas Jackson some books and notes to help him out and to modernize it since Bruce Lee isn't as well known as he was back in the 80's.

"There's been a new script out already, but to me, they didn't nail it, so I sent the writer some books he should read, and I gave him a few pages. I'm not the writer, but I helped him out, gave him five pages of information, sent him some books so he could really make a story that'd resonate with today’s times for The Last Dragon. But I want to keep the martial-art integrity, parts that the first one may have lost, because the other guy was in love with Bruce Lee. Bruce Lee is still the master, still the greatest, but maybe his popularity in cinema is not the same as it was in the '80s, because in the '80s, you were still getting Bruce Lee releases."

Is he saying that he wants to pull out all of the "Bruce Lee-ness" of the original Last Dragon? Yes and no. "Bruce Lee is definitely timeless, but at the same time, the integrity of his martial art may not be as widely known now as it was then." Obviously that can be argued, but I'll let RZA and Jackson (both of them) work this out, rather than complain about whether they should be contemporizing it or not. While RZA doesn't say either of these are shooting anytime soon, it at least sounds like they're progressing well, and that's what counts the most. They'll move into production when the time is right. And we'll keep you updated on both!

‘Chen Zhen’ begins shooting as superhero movie

Production began on Monday for CHEN ZHEN (aka THE LEGEND OF CHEN ZHEN), a kung fu actioner directed by Andrew Lau with Donnie Yen starring and choreographing the action. What may come as a surprise is that Lau intends to combine Donnie Yen-style kung fu with visual effects to create a superhero movie. Lau states that Chen Zhen will be a superhero who is not only a master of martial arts but will transform himself to take on the challenge of saving the entire city. The film’s co-writer and producer, Gordon Chan, has stated that this will not be a remake of FIST OF FURY but rather a reinvention. Chen Zhen is the semi-fictional student of Huo Yuan-jia, first made famous by Bruce Lee who portrayed him in writer-director’s Lo Wei’s FIST OF FURY. In 1994, Jet Li took on the role in FIST OF LEGEND. An ATV series titled FIST OF FURY followed with Yen starring as Chen Zhen.

Here is the plot according to The Hollywood Reporter: Set in 1920s Shanghai, the film features Donnie Yen as a local resistance fighter who had been taken for dead after a bloody skirmish. After an absence of seven years he returns in disguise to uncover a plot linking the triads and the Japanese. Anthony Wong, Shu Qi and Zhou Yang also star. The latter two stars will portray women who vie for the affections of Chen Zhen. “I have played Chen Zhen on [the] FIST OF FURY TV series 15 years ago so I’m particularly [enthusiastic] about this role,” said Yen. In terms of action, I have confidence of presenting a whole new Chen Zhen. I hope this will engender another wave of wushu trend, and hope for this to become a classic.”

Filming on location at the Shaolin Temple is probably the dream of most directors who focus on Shaolin kung fu. But Benny Chan is an exception.

Benny Chan is helming "Shaolin" - also known as "New Shaolin Temple" - which features a constellation of stars including Jackie Chan, Andy Lau, Nicholas Tse, Wu Jing and Fan Bingbing.

"There are so many tourists at the Shaolin Temple," director Chan said recently of the kung fu hotbed, which is located in Songshan, central China's Henan Province. "And the architecture there has been painted with vibrant colors, which I don't want in my film. Besides, my film has lots of action scenes. I don't want to see the temple damaged."

Instead, Chan and his crew have built their own "Shaolin Temple" in Zhejiang Province. The set cost 10 million yuan (US$1.47 million), and is a life-size copy of the actual temple, only with less restoration.

"Shaolin" began shooting in October 2009 with a jubilant ceremony held inside the Shaolin Temple amidst media reports touting the film as the first to be allowed on location since the 1982 smash-hit "The Shaolin Temple" starring Jet Li.

Distinguishing his film from the previous version, Benny Chan sets the new "Shaolin" in the early 20th century. The film is about Shaolin monks who protect and shelter civilians during the war.

Just re-watched Tai Chi Master yesterday. One of Jet Li's best although clearly not as good as Once upon a time in China. Some scenes would have probably been better with more down to earth approach and less wire although I don't have anything against wires in general.

Lau Kar-Leung to receive Lifetime Achievement Award

Big news come out of Hong Kong this weekend. Legendary filmmaker and martial arts expert Lau Kar-Leung (Liu Chia-Liang) will receive the Lifetime Achievement Award at this year’s Hong Kong Film Awards. Having worked in the film industry for over the past five decades, Grandmaster Lau is the eldest son of Lau Charn, who was the student of Lam Sai-Wing, who himself was the student of legendary kung fu hero Wong Fei-Hung. Lau has worked extensively as an actor, director, and fight choreographer.

Lau has family in the industry, including  brother Lau Kar-Wing, adopted brother Gordon Liu, and nephew Sammy Lau, a former 70’s kung fu star who last appeared in DRUNKEN MASTER II and is currently an instructor at the Lau Family Hung Gar Kung Fu Academy in Hong Kong. Lau’s wife, Mary Jean Reimer, is a former Shaw Brothers actress turned barrister. According to Yahoo! News, the organizers of the Hong Kong Film Awards wanted to pay tribute to Lau’s achievements in martial arts film, which in turn became “an important asset in the heritage of Hong Kong cinema”.

Some of Lau’s most-well known films include THE 36TH CHAMBER OF SHAOLIN (1978), FIST OF THE WHITE LOTUS (1980), MARTIAL ARTS OF SHAOLIN (1985), OPERATION SCORPIO (1991) and DRUNKEN MASTER II (1994). He even had a brief stint in Hollywood as martial arts consultant on TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES III (1993). His last film appearance was in Tsui Hark’s SEVEN SWORDS (2005) as both actor and action director. Congratulations to Grandmaster Lau, who will receive the award at the 29th Hong Kong Film Awards on April 18, 2010.

Infinite Kung Fu walks you through familiar corridors in the house of martial mayhem, but still smashes your face through walls of wonder and into rooms where kung fu is afraid to go! The Martial World is ruled by a mysterious emperor whose five armies are each headed by a cruel and highly skilled kung fu master. Lei Kung, a soldier in one of these armies, grows tired of his master's evil ways and seeks enlightenment elsewhere. However, he soon finds that he's been chosen as the one who will put an end to the emperor's tyrannical rule - personally! Allegiances are blurred as techniques are perfected, and Lei Kung becomes less certain who's friend and who's foe in each chapter! Fists fly, limbs are lost, and blood vessels burst in this tale of furious rivals, supernatural masters, walking corpses, and above all, raging kung fu!

New HK Film Archive exhibition highlights the cinematic legend of Wong Fei-hung
The HKFA's new publication "Mastering Virtue: The Cinematic Legend of a Martial Artist", with an English edition on CD-ROM, examines the cinema of Wong Fei-hung from a historical background and considers its various artistic characteristics and film genres.

New HK Film Archive exhibition highlights the cinematic legend of Wong Fei-hung

Hong Kong (HKSAR) - In films, dressed in his best attire and wearing a stern face, Wong Fei-hung is often seen lecturing his apprentices at his famous Po Chi Lam clinic. He talks about the essence of kung fu, which he believes strengthens the body but without agitating rivals. Master Wong's cinematic character is more about displaying the Confucian virtues of wisdom and benevolence.

Wong Fei-hung cinema certainly had its own characteristics. Over 100 films capturing the spirit of his time have been produced in the past five decades. Kwan Tak-hing, Gordon Liu and Jet Li have each played Master Wong to reflect the changes in society and social values across different eras.

The Hong Kong Film Archive's (HKFA) exhibition "Benevolence and Loftiness: The Cinematic Legend of Wong Fei-hung" opens today (March 31) at the Exhibition Hall and will run until July 22.

Based on the setting of Xiguan houses, the exhibition reconstructs Master Wong's Po Chi Lam clinic as seen in the movies. With oral history interviews, precious film stills and videos displayed in the settings of the main hall, side hall, bedroom, study room and courtyard, the exhibition reveals the legendary spirit and virtue characterised in the Wong film genre.

The exhibition also introduces the different martial arts shown in Master Wong's film saga. Godson of Wong's wife Mok Kwai-lan and master of the "Hung" fist, Mr Li Chan-wo, performed a lion dance with his apprentices today at the exhibition.

Mr Lau Ka-yung, a fifth generation student of Master Wong and Mr Pang Chi-ming, a fourth generation student, also attended the activity at the exhibition.

Wong Fei-hung is not a fictional character. He was born in the late Qing period and from a young age performed martial arts with his father.

He won fame at an early age and set up his own martial arts school and clinic before reaching 20. He is remembered as a hero who defeated his rivals with his bare hands. He led a difficult life but two decades after his death became a legendary hero in fiction, radio plays and film.

The study of martial arts became popular after the Second World War. In 1949, the director Wu Pang adapted the story of Wong Fei-hung into a movie. The film was thought to celebrate the virtue of protecting the weak and to revive the Cantonese tradition.

It also brought emotional relief to those who missed their Mainland home. In "The Story of Wong Fei-hung, Part One: Wong Fei-hung's Whip that Smacks the Candle" (1949), Wong first appears on the silver screen with a westernised haircut. Confronted by other masters, he returns to his clinic and complains to his disciples.

Unlike the monolithic hero known to his later audience, he is wild and vents his anger during a fierce fight. In "Wong Fei-hung at a Boxing Match" (1956), Wong is transformed from a reckless fighter to a benevolent and thoughtful Confucian.

Hong Kong was shaping into a metropolis by the end of the 1960s, but on the silver screen Master Wong remains pedantic and even helpless at times. Director Wong Fung and screenwriter Szeto On turned a new leaf in the Wong series and produced nine quality Wong Fei-hung movies in two years from 1968 to 1969, including "Wong Fei-hung: The Incredible Success in Canton" (1968), "Wong Fei-hung: The Eight Bandits" (1968) and "Wong Fei-hung's Combat with the Five Wolves" (1969).

In the 1970s, prequels about Wong's early life and stories about Wong's apprentices appeared, and director Lau Kar-leung introduced the Southern Fist into his films.

He boldly casts Wong as a youth in "Challenge of the Masters" (1976) and "Martial Club" (1981), with Gordon Liu performing the authentic Hung Fist, with an emphasis on the importance of the martial arts spirit. With dynamic action choreography, director Yuen Woo-ping offers a combination of vaudeville and fighting in "Drunken Master" (1979) and "Dreadnaught" (1981), creating a kung fu comedy featuring Jackie Chan, Sammo Hung and Yuen Biao.

The Wong Fei-hung film series enjoyed a successful comeback in the 1990s. Director Tsui Hark juxtaposes Wong's story with the historical and political developments of the time.

The allegory of a master disturbed by political and cultural turmoil reflects the director's concern about his city and its motherland during this transitional period. Jet Li and Chiu Man-cheuk are featured as the young Master Wong in Tsui's works. The influence of Tsui's "Once Upon a Time in China" (1991) is far-reaching and its legacy can be seen in the recent film hit "Ip Man" (2008).

Using a different approach, director Li Lik-chee's "Once Upon a Time a Hero in China" (1992) is an anti-hero and postmodern spin-off of the iconic Wong legend.

Outstanding performances by the actors and those behind the scenes contributed much to the success of the Wong Fei-hung saga. Master Wong's compassionate, humble, honest and well respected image on silver screen is a manifestation of Kwan Tak-hing's personae. A sturdy, strong-armed and avid martial arts practitioner, Kwan created a resilient, honourable and solemn image of Master Wong.

Using a different approach, Gordon Liu embodied the quality of resoluteness in the young Master Wong. He showcased not only the "Hung" fist but also that being respectful was the ultimate principal of martial arts. Jet Li had started training in Beijing for martial arts in childhood and this helped him renew the image of Wong Fei-hung as gentle but authoritative as well as young and successful.

Not to be missed are some of the other notable characters in Master Wong films, such as the "Villain Kin" played by Sek Kin, who participated in more than 70 Wong Fei-hung movies. Wong's disciple Leung Foon, played by Tso Tat-wah is also worth a mention, as is the role of Beggar So and others.

The HKFA's retrospective on Wong Fei-hung is a contributory programme of the 36th Hong Kong International Film Festival (HKIFF), and includes various events. From now until May 26, "Once Upon a Hero: The Wong Fei-hung Saga" will screen 26 representative films and television works from the 1940s to the 1990s.

The HKFA's new publication "Mastering Virtue: The Cinematic Legend of a Martial Artist", with an English edition on CD-ROM, examines the cinema of Wong Fei-hung from a historical background and considers its various artistic characteristics and film genres. In addition, a seminar entitled "The Kung Fu Saga of Wong Fei-hung" will be held at 4.30pm on May 12. Master Wong's students from different generations, Mr Pang Chi-ming, Mr Lau Ka-yung and Mr Li Chan-wo, will speak at the seminars.

Admission for the exhibition and seminars is free.

Programme information and details of various discounts can be obtained in the "ProFolio 62" or in the 36th HKIFF booking folder distributed at all performing venues of the Leisure and Cultural Services Department.
