Title: US Elections 2012
Post by: mode107 on May 30, 2012, 11:13:32 PM
We had an 08 election thread, so I thought we could do that again.
As a note, politics can be heated. Remember the forum rules (http://forum.jphip.com/index.php?topic=3014.0) when you post. No personal attacks or baiting.

This is probabaly a choice between the lesser of two evils for me.

I don't think Romney would actually do anything that will help the middle class. My theory is that he would cut more taxes, especially for the rich.

Obama on the other hand is more of a popular figurehead that hipsters like.

This does not mean I'm choosing Obama but he isn't a Bush

Honestly, I would vote for Obama because we always need a second term to see how everything will pan out but Romney to me sometimes is out of touch with people in general and in the end we will find a way to get out because mostly everything drives by private corporations and with that realization I have this:

Added a poll  :)

I added the 'not allow to vote' option for non-US or under-aged people. Should be interesting to see if there's some sort of difference.

Personally, I think Romney is very scary and I would not like to see him win. He seems obsessed by money and he's gaining it over the backs of the common man by using every evil scheme in the book. No thanks. And I'm not even American. lol

I'm not American, but if allowed to vote I would go with Obama. As an outsider, I think Obama's done a fairly decent job in the 4 years he's been in charge though I get the impression that American's feel like he hasn't made good on all his pre-election promises. Which is understandable, we have a coalition government here in the UK which did the same thing and honestly, it's like the country's gone downhill since they came into power. Don't like Romney, and yet frighteningly, he's the lesser of evils from all the other Republican nominees that came before.

Just realized how the people underage and outside of America are Obama people, well technically being outside of the 48 states, I guess I would have that distinction and sometimes I wonder if Hawaii is a state or just something the U.S. just wanted for strategy

I'm a liberal person, so Obama will be my pick come November.

Romney (Mittens) seems to be running as a business man, and not a former governor. Wouldn't the role of a governor be more relatable to the role of president?

It's kind of shame because Obama spent a lot of the beginning of his term trying to please everyone and then when he DID try to get shit done, the other side shot him down no matter what. It's really become less of a race about issues and more just about hating on the president (at least from a media standpoint). I've not seen Mitt say a lot about what he would do except scream some empty promises.

Plus, at least under Obama I got my health insurance back for another year... so he's at least done something right. :)

The reports of America's death because of this are greatly exaggerated. Apparently Romney goes off something fierce about it, would like to see that for myself. I did however see Fox News' coverage of it, which was basically point a camera and let crazy people rant about communism in front of it.

I have been very unhappy with the republican party for a very long time.  Under W they did everything they could to get as much money as they could to as few people as possible(those that already had a butt ton and don't relly need more).
One of the first things they did when they took office was cram a bill that gave tax breaks to corporations to send jobs overseas. Overnight about 3mill lost their jobs.
And dear old Mitt, his job was to go in send jobs overseas, take most of the money, and watch as the companys failed(see KB Toys).
Also During  Obama 's first term, those in office have done nothing at all to help repair the damage the Bush/Cheney administration  left. They never even had a plan to enact, it was whatever the Dems try.....fight it no matter what.  They have acted like spoiled children throwing tantrums, taking their ball and walking away untill the Dems cave and give them what they want.

So if you couldn't tell from the rant I'll be voting Obama.

2012 is not really Obama vs Romney but more Obama vs Not Obama because no one really loves Romney even the Republicans.  The house Republicans basically shrug at Romney, they like him enough but when it comes November they are going to vote against Obama and not for Romney.  I would be surprised if Romney wins and if he does I hope he remember no one loved him and does what he thinks is right and not what the right wing lobbyists want him to do.
Title: 'Dark Knight Rises' accused of thinly-veiled attack on Mitt Romney
Post by: Foxy Brown on July 18, 2012, 05:59:11 AM
Controversial US media personality Rush Limbaugh has accused The Dark Knight Rises of being a thinly-veiled left-wing conspiracy against Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney.

Talking on his syndicated radio show on Tuesday, Limbaugh took issue with the role of the film's main antagonist Bane.

Mitt Romney has come under fire from Democrats and the Obama administration for his record as CEO of investment firm Bain Capital, and the right-wing radio host saw no coincidence in the similarity between the name of the company and the character played by Tom Hardy.

"Do you think it is accidental that the name of the really vicious fire-breathing, four-eyed whatever-it-is villain in this movie is named Bane?" he told listeners, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

"The audience is going to be huge. A lot of people are going to see the movie. And it's a lot of brain-dead people, entertainment, the pop culture crowd, and they're going to hear Bane in the movie and they're going to associate Bain.

"And the thought is that when they're going to start paying attention to the campaign later in the year and Obama and the Democrats keep talking about Bain, not Bain Capitol but Romney and Bain, that these people will start thinking back to the Batman movies - 'Oh yeah, I know who that is!'"

Bane has been established in the Batman universe for 19 years, having first made his appearance in the 1993 comic arc 'Knightfall'. He also appeared in a minor role in 1997's Batman and Robin.

The Rush Limbaugh Show is the highest-rated show in the US, and Limbaugh is among the highest paid people in US media, signing an eight-year contract in 2008 for $38 million a year. (http://www.digitalspy.com/movies/news/a393833/dark-knight-rises-accused-of-thinly-veiled-attack-on-mitt-romney.html)

How do you figure out who you're going to vote for? For me, I just read between the lines. Maybe I'm too cynical but I don't believe that politics, i.e. democrat/republican, and what candidates say they'll do actually account for anything. I figure the political landscape is merely a game and they're just trying to play it or pander to the lowest common denominator or whatever. What I mean by read between the lines is I just observe how they act and try to read body language. Seeing as body language is hard to self-manipulate and that it is still believed to account for the majority of communication I just go by that. I liked Bill Clinton because he gave off that "bro" vibe. He was cool as the other side of the pillow on the campaign trail and he was musically inclined. I didn't know what he stood for at all and I still don't. I sure as hell didn't care that he copped some head in the oval office. I voted for Obama because he was slick, he smoked menthol, and he could ball. Yup. Depending on who owns the Senate, Congress and/or the House of Reps it doesn't really matter what the president wants to accomplish if the other implementations of checks and balances cock blocks him/her the whole term. So yea, I just pick the guy I feel most comfortable with. It's not like I don't have anything to lose either. I'm a tax paying citizen with a job and bills to pay(like most of you I'm sure) and all that so it SHOULD matter to me but it doesn't lol. Anyone feel the same way?

tl;dr version - representative republics make me feel apathetic.
Title: Mitt Romney Facebook photo upsets Lowell Turpin, who assaulted girlfriend, repor
Post by: Foxy Brown on August 02, 2012, 03:31:41 AM
He suspected his live-in girlfriend of planning an affair, and when he saw a picture of a man he didn't recognize on her Facebook page, it set him off, according to reports.
Lowell Turpin "angrily demanded to know who the male was," an Anderson County Sheriff's Department incident report states.

The answer, his girlfriend told him: presidential contender Mitt Romney.

Upset at the woman's "attempting to communicate with friends through her Facebook account," Turpin jerked her laptop computer from her grasp, smashed the machine into a wall, and then hit her in the face with his fist, according to reports.

The 40-year-old Turpin remains in the Anderson County Jail, charged with domestic assault in connection with the July 22 incident in Anderson County's Claxton community. Title: Prosecutor: Ga. murder case uncovers terror plot
Post by: Foxy Brown on August 28, 2012, 03:44:12 AM
Four Army soldiers based in southeast Georgia killed a former comrade and his girlfriend to protect an anarchist militia group they formed that stockpiled assault weapons and plotted a range of anti-government attacks, prosecutors told a judge Monday.

Prosecutors in rural Long County, near the sprawling Army post Fort Stewart, said the militia group of active and former U.S. military members spent at least $87,000 buying guns and bomb components. They allege the group was serious enough to kill two people - former soldier Michael Roark and his 17-year-old girlfriend, Tiffany York - by shooting them in the woods last December in order to keep its plans secret.

"This domestic terrorist organization did not simply plan and talk," prosecutor Isabel Pauley told a Superior Court judge. "Prior to the murders in this case, the group took action. Evidence shows the group possessed the knowledge, means and motive to carry out their plans."

The prosecutor said the militia group had big plans. It plotted to take over Fort Stewart by seizing its ammunition control point and talked of bombing the Forsyth Park fountain in nearby Savannah, she said. In Washington state, she added, the group plotted to bomb a dam and poison the state's apple crop. Ultimately, prosecutors said, the militia's goal was to overthrow the government and assassinate the president. This has to be a parody video right? Right?

New Morning (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Oye4rhUa2Fk#ws)

My only comfort out of this video is that it looks like the husband is only agreeing with the wife because he's afraid she'll get mad. "That's...not the change I voted for either..."

This whole gay marriage thing. I mean why can't people opposed to it just be honest? They've no issue with gay marriage specifically. They clearly have an issue with gay people. Seeing them trip over themselves trying to explain the way in which a gay couple's marriage would somehow effect their's is just always awkward and embarrasing. At least if they just came out and said "fuck it we don't like gays alright?", at least then the dialogue could begin in trying to educate. I can't think of anything that would affect me less than two people of the same sex being married. And there will come a time, years from now when we'll look back and we'll all be embarrased that there were was a time when gay marriage wasn't allowed.

I'll admit that Obama's performance had me feeling a bit underwhelmed. Romney didn't do much for me either, but there was no chance in hell I was voting for him anyways. "I'm voting for Mitt Romney because I have a cat called Mitts." I refuse to believe this woman is anything other than a ridiculous troll.

Wow, Biden was on fire last night. He definitely energized the base. As for the independents, some say his smiling and interruptions may have turned them off.

His huge incredulous smiles made me laugh during the debate, but honestly I don't see how he could've not smiled or interrupt upon hearing the stupidity coming out of his oponent. I was super glad that he actually tried to unmask the lies. I wish Obama had done that during his debate, and hope he will in the upcoming ones.

Wow, that debate had me feeling energized. Lots of great lines.

I've been watching the debates through my 360 so I can get a free Halo costume for my avatar.

I felt energized too~ Enjoyed it a lot! Happy to see Obama strong again and setting the facts straight! Loved when the moderator corrected Romney regarding Obama's press conference at the Rose Garden after the terrible Libya incident. They've been trying to get away with that lie ever since (Ryan  used it during the vicepresidential debate too) and it's about time that it was clarified in front of the nation. Tragedy should never be used for political gain!!!

These are hilarious:

"We Also Have Fewer Horses And Bayonets." Ouch

Post debate polls are in favor of Obama. CNN was Obama 47% to Romney's 40% CBS poll has Obama with 53%, Romney 23%.

And that's it. Can't wait to vote.

Election day tomorrow! :panic:

Remember, my fellow Americans, to also pay attention to and vote on your state and local measures as well!

My default position is to vote no on propositions I know nothing about, but it looks like I'll be definitely voting yes on California props 30 and 36 while definitely voting no on 31, 32, 33, and 35, with the rest kinda leaning towards yes. Withholding my vote on US senator because I hate Feinstein and Boxer. I'm kinda tempted to vote for Romney just to troll people since Obama's gonna win my state anyway, but it's really not worth it. If anything, I'll just follow whatever the ACLU or Electronic Frontier Foundation endorses.

And yet at the same time, when you see a lot of the garbage that's on there, it's just really, really, REALLY sad to know that there are people out there who honestly believe in it.
