BTBAM "The Great Misdirect" studio update #3

Man these studio vids are awesome... in this one, Dustie at 1:50 onward is priceless, particularly now that I heard it's a Perfume song.

Holy crap.  Did I just see...vibrato?!  It's like the first time BTBAM has ever included vibrato in just about any of their recordings.  Pretty interesting seeing the Mesa Roadster and Egnater Rebel 20 is the background.  Also, in case you're not a big Perfume fan, the song is called "plastic smile" and is off their GAME album.  :inlove:

Swallow The Sun - Descending Winters

And just because that video had a Perfume song in it:

Marty Friedman / ポリリズム

Loudness - S.D.I (live)

His tone is so damn boxy and congested, but man does Akira rip!

^I love the look of those guitars! His tone is kinda similar to Syu's tone.. like, a bit nasal, not that open.

edit: after watching some vids, I definitely prefer Syu's tone over Akira's. Of course, that doesn't make him any less of a great guitarist.

Silent Revelation: Guitar Demo

I prefer these instrumental vids, the vocals ruin it for me 70% of the time

...Speaking of vocals:

Stratovarius - Hunting High and Low

megadeth - holy wars
NEXT THING YOU KNOW THEY'LL TAKE MY THOUGHTS AWAY

One of their best songs, still dig it a lot. My fav is still In my darkest hour, the solo with all that delay on it is so awesome.

My favorite solo is actually Tornado of Souls.  I can't think of anything more perfect than that.  It starts out melodic, goes into those eastern scales/modes he loves, and then it's flat out shred.

As far as tone is concerned, Syu's tone sucks, IMO.  It sounds like a pure modeler direct to a PA to me.  Advanced to Fall isn't bad, but Beyond the End of Dispair is thin, One for All - All for One sounds like he forgot to turn his wah pedal off, Reincarnation is compressed to hell and The Flag of Punishment just sounds like a POD to me.  Akira's tone can be boxy and harsh at times (especially live), but some of his earlier tones were flat out killer.  Don't be fooled by the classic 80s production.  Most of today's stuff is brickwalled to hell anyway.

Going melodic this time:

Nightingale - Nightfall Overture

Swanö is pure genius.

Can anyone recommend some good instrumentals? To me, while it seems an obvious choice, nothing can go better than Orion by Metallica.

Orion - Metallica

Great riffs, a bass solo, precision playing and turns into something otherworldly at the middle that just can't be topped when you're listening to it with a clear night sky above you. R.I.P. Cliff Burton

There are tons of great instrumentals out there.  Care to be more specific as to what you're looking for?

Progressive Metal?
Circus Maximus - Sane No More

Tech Death?
Blotted Science - EEG Tracings

Melodeath?
At The Gates - And The World Returned

Power Metal?
FIREWIND THE FIRE AND THE FURY

Yeah there's a ton out there... you got all the Metallica ones I reckon... Just a couple more:

In Flames - Wayfaerer

For some nostalgy value. I was really into Jester Race when it was released back in '95.

MEGADETH - Into the Lungs of Hell (HD Audio)

More nostalgy.

Pelican - March to the Sea [1 of 2]

Pelican is all instrumental, "post-metal" you might call it. Just one example track.

BTBAM and Perfume = WIN

Yeah I got the live DVD. haven't watched all of it yet though.

Speaking of "post-metal" I like me some Isis.

Isis - Not in Rivers, But in Drops
edited the video to a different one. Didn't realize it was some WMP visualization crap lol. This song isn't as good though... Red Sea is that song that got me into them.

Also old topic, but I really really like the clean vocals in Protest the Hero. It's different from most metal bands, and his range is fucking insane.

Isis is good shit man.

Some other "post-metal" or sludge acts I'm digging.

Mouth of the Architect - Generation of Ghosts

This was my fave band of the kind for 2008 as I wrote in this thread. For the impatient the song properly starts at 1:55. :P

North - Ghosts Among Us

And North likewise mentioned.

...

Damn this is one big YouTube thread.

Oh yeah, I was really digging the North when you posted it back then.

Here's one of the first metal bands I got into.

As you can probably tell I'm more into newer metal. :P
Unearth
Unearth - "Zombie Autopilot" Metal Blade Records
This song is just so damn fun.

And here's a band I just discovered a few minutes ago looking through Youtube :P

THE AGONIST - and Their Eulogies Sang Me to Sleep (OFFICIAL)

The vocalist is fucking hot, and the music is fucking bad ass.

I got some more YT vids to watch  XD

To break the YT trend a bit (please don't stop entirely haha), which have been the best and worst metal gigs you've seen live?

The best one for me was Children of Bodom on the HCDR tour, they played a lot of old stuff and the sound was perfect, which is kinda rare. Arch Enemy is a close second, amazingly tight playing.

Worst gigs include Nile, you could only hear bass.. tons and tons of bas. And Dimmu Borgir, the drummer couldn't keep up and the whole set was a mess.

Deicide was kinda funny, because they are supposed to be 'evil' but they just stood there smiling the entire time.

Best - Sonata Arctica.  This was before Jani was kicked out of the band and before they made that abomination called Unia.  The energy was great (except for the bassist who just stood there with a blank stare the entire time in the back of the stage), the singer's pitch was ridiculous, and it was the best live tone I've heard in person at a concert hall.  It was a smaller venue, so the energy was awesome.

Worst - Hard to say.  I know it's not metal, but when I went to the G3 concert, Petrucci was so loud that I got dizzy.  He fucked up my hearing so much that I couldn't hear Satch or the jam afterwards.  I couldn't even tell what he was playing because it was so loud.  Everything sounded like white noise.  My hearing was shot for a few weeks after that.  On the other hand, I went to the first Gigantour, and everyone decided to have a stupid loudness war.  After every band, everything got louder and louder.  In case you don't see a pattern here, I'm not a fan of really loud concerts.  When you have to grimace or hold your ears just to stay in the hall, it doesn't become enjoyable.

Best:  Entombed played in this small club here in '99 right after Nicke had fucked off to concentrate on Hellacopters. Right from the start they blasted everyone to hell with Eyemaster and wouldn't slow down. They were playing like they had something to prove.

Worst: Bruce Dickinson's solo gig, prolly after Chemical Wedding was released, so '98 I guess. Well the gig was cool, I think, but as an experience... I was wasted all to hell, raging in the front, and almost threw up on Bruce Dickinson's shoes when he got close to the edge. I was so fucked up I missed a part of it though. What I remember was nice, they played a bunch of Iron Maiden too, at least whatever Bruce had composed.

...

The Great Misdirect is brilliant, but I really expected no less. Funnily enough my fave track is probably I really dig Desert of Song.

Desert of Song -Between The Buried And Me

Best not pick faves so soon really, it was perfect for the moment though.  :P
