The Best and Worst Covers

Talk about which covers you like and which ones you hate. Are the ones you like better than the original or just good, but not that good.

(I'm no musical expert or shit like that, so my opinions on music are usually just, "I like it" or "I don't like it" with varying degrees.:P)

Some covers I liked to start off

Pantera - Mission: Impossible theme
This cover was just cool.:kickass:

Pantera - Hole in the Sky(Black Sabbath)
I thought this cover was good, but I still like the original a lot more.

Pantera - Cat Scratch Fever(Ted Nugent)
Great cover. When I heard this one(along with the two above), I was a big Pantera fan, and I liked this one more than the original. I thought it had the same kind of sound as Nugent's, just a little heavier.

The Black Dahlia Murder - Paint It, Black(The Rolling Stones)
'Paint It, Black' was one of my favorite songs for a while, and when I heard this one I was listening to a lot of fast music, so I thought this cover was great.

Judas Priest - Paint It, Black(The Rolling Stones)
I heard this cover a few years before I heard TBDM's. heh, It's the same kind of thing with this cover. At this time, I was listening to a lot of metal like this, so I liked it because it was one of my favorite songs done in one of my favorite styles.

There are a whole lot more covers I can't think of right now.

Best Covers
Jimi Hendrix - All Along The Watchtower

Do I really need to say anything about this?

Between the Buried and Me - Bicycle Race

I like this, if not solely for the fact that they sound nothing like their usual in this song (or rather, the whole The Anatomy Of album)

John Coltrane - My Favourite Things

It's not really a cover, but it's my favourite (see what I did there??) version of the song \o/

Ultra Chuadz - El Nin-Yo!

Metal cover of Tata Young's song. What? It's great!

Worst Covers

The Final Countdown

Man, these guys suck.

Maliciel - I&YOU&I&YOU&I

..orz

I can't think of any others right now, but I'm sure I missed quite a few.

All of the Queen songs that the American Idol contestants covered one or two seasons ago.  I don't watch the show myself, but my parents knew I was a big Queen fan so they showed it to me.  It was painful to the soul :[

Best Cover

Jeff Buckley - Hallelujah. Man, this song just gets me every time. Excellent and even Leonard Cohen thinks it's the best version of his own song.

Worst Cover

The Used/My Chemical Romance - Under Pressure. UGH. Just go fucking shoot yourselves in the face before you MANGLE another classic song. PLEASE.

I like alot of the covers Angela Aki has done. Like her cover of "Eyes on Me" from FFVIII, I like hers better than the original.

Also "Kiss From a Rose" was pretty kickass, though I like Seal's better.

I can't really think of any bad ones. Mariah Carey's, "Bringin On The Heartache" ? :P

Lucy Silvas - Noting else Matters (Metallica cover)

The Final Countdown

Man, these guys suck.
oh my god that was painful.

There are some horrible covers out there by amateurs, but the absolute worst I've ever heard by a professional band was Grave Digger's cover of Dio's 'We Rock'.  If I had to guess, I'd say they had like three minutes of extra studio time so they decided to throw something together as fast as they could.  I mean, they don't even try to play it right.

'Imagine' by A Perfect Circle...Maybe it's just the fact that I hold that song in reverence, it's sacrelige to cover it especially the way they do.

'Sound of Silence' by Nevermore, if you can even call it a cover.  Beyond the lyrics, the source material is lost on this.

Good covers...Ummm, I like Faith No More's cover of 'War Pigs'.

Mazzy Star's cover of 'Five String Serenade' is better than the original.

The whole 'Dark Side of the Moon' album by Dream Theater.

There's a bunch of good ones I'm forgetting, but meh.

Totally agree with both options. My choices though would be

Best: Johnny Cash - Hurt

Made during the final years of his life, Cash takes this NIN song and makes it his own.

Worst: Avril Lavigne - Chop Suey

Oh Christ no. Not even much of a fan of the song, but the original is miles better. Avril sounds like a 12 yr old having a screaming tantrum.

Not the greatest quality, but the best I could find on YouTube:

My favorite band (The New Pornographers) playing a song by my favorite older band (ELO). This is made of so much win to me.

Some favorites
I recently rediscovered "Rock On" after remembering Michael Damian's corny 1989 version was a cover...I've since found newer versions that are awesome:

I love it when Boyz II Men go acapella:

Though they don't always need to do so for a great cover:

I love Rage Against the Machine for combining rap with hard rock...even moreso when they revitalize hip hop classics:

Hated it
In retrospect I have to concede that this is hilarious. But I was definitely crying blasphemy back when I first heard this for taking a classic from a genre I love and turning it into a genre I hate:

I don't know if this technically qualifies as a cover, but it's still the best.
