I can't wait for the Olympics next year, srsly. Not since the Kristi Yamaguchi vs Midori Ito days have I been even remotely interested in the ladies division of skating, but thanks to the Asian superpowers over the last couple of years its been alot more interesting. And of course, being coached by one of Canada's best ever helps bridge that gap.

Koreans usually pronounce her name correctly which is Yo-na (a long "o" sound). She goes by Yoo (u) Na since they think non-Koreans will understand it better. I've been to her hometown Gunpo which is about 15-20 minutes outside of the Seoul Metroplex. She has been labeled the number 1 CF girl. The big news is that many are upset she'll go to university in Canada and not in Korea. She's training in Canada, so it will be easier for her to take some joint Korea U classes in Toronto.

Japanese Site Hacked over Yu-na Attacks
An army of Korean netizens apparently attacked the Japanese Internet forum 2ch for their anti-Korean postings, including those targeting Korea's Olympic gold-medal-winning figure skater Kim Yu-na, causing the site to shut down on Monday.
The attacks began at 1 p.m. on Monday, Korea's Independence Day, which marked Korea's movement against Japanese colonial rule 91 years ago.
Login attempts were unsuccessful in the afternoon.
About 30 out of 33 posting boards were paralyzed by 1:30 p.m.
Online security officials estimated that more than 10,000 Korean netizens participated in hacking into the site.
The attacks were triggered by comments praising Russians for the killing of a Korean student in Moscow.
Some postings claimed that the killing was not racially motivated and Russians were doing "good deeds" after the event occurred.
2ch saw postings claiming that Kim Yu-na won the gold medal in the Vancouver Olympics thanks to judges bribed by Korea. Such anti-Yu-na comments increased when Japan's Mao Asada lost to Kim and had to settle for a silver medal.

South Korean web users staged a concerted cyberattack against a popular Japanese website Monday to protest posts that allegedly tried to tarnish Olympic figure skating gold medalist Kim Yu-na’s reputation, Yonhap news agency reported.
South Korean Net users were angered last Wednesday when a Japanese user alleged on a 2-channel message board that figure skating star Kim bribed judges to edge out her rival Mao Asada of Japan, Yonhap said.
More than 10,000 South Korean users coordinated their attacks through South Korean web communities to attack the Japanese site on Monday, the day that marks the 91st anniversary of the March 1, 1919 independence movement.
South Korean users attacked the web page until 30 message boards out of 33 shut down from a server overload, the news agency said.
South Korean users recently opened a web community to plan cyberattacks targeting the Japanese website, and have amassed more than 77,000 members, according to Yonhap.

Seoul City has decided to give honorary citizenship to Brian Orser, the Canadian coach of Olympic figure skating gold medalist Kim Yu-na, for his contribution to the country's sports development.
The metropolitan government has submitted a motion to the Seoul Metropolitan Council, calling for its consent on the offering of the citizenship, officials said yesterday.
The city plans to confer the honorary-citizen certificate to Orser when he and Kim come to Korea to participate in "Festa on Ice 2010," a star-studded ice show to be held from April 16-18 in Seoul.
"We have selected Orser as an honorary citizen to recognize his achievements in contributing to the enhancement of the country's sports, including having led Kim to clinch the figure skating gold," said a senior city official, refusing to be named.
Orser, 48, began coaching Kim in 2006, who won Korea's first Olympic figure skating gold in Vancouver last month.
Orser, who retired in 1988, had a successful skating career himself. He won silver at the 1984 Sarajevo Winter Olympics and the 1988 Calgary Winter Olympics. He finished first at the World Championships in 1987.
Honorary citizens can participate in a variety of municipal events as VIPs and enter city-run facilities free of charge such as the Seoul Museum of History, Seoul Grand Park and the Seoul Museum of Art.
The city has been offering honorary citizenship to foreigners each year since 1959 to recognize their contributions to developing and promoting Korea. The number of those given the award so far totals 607 people from 90 nations.
Previous recipients include former national football team coach Guus Hiddink of the Netherlands, former U.S. Ambassador Christopher Hill, American football player Hines Ward and Susan Cox, vice president of Holt International Children's Services.

Figure skating star Kim Yu-na will promote Korean food, or hansik, in the hopes of making it as popular and well known as she became through her feats at the World Championships and the 2010 Vancouver Olympic Games.
The Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries (MIFAFF) said Wednesday that it appointed the 19-year-old as an honorary ambassador to promote a variety of Korean dishes worldwide.
"I will make every effort to promote the taste and grace of Korean food so that people around the world can enjoy it," Kim told a press conference held on the sidelines of the International Food Industry Exhibition, Seoul 2010 at KINTEX located in Goyang, northwest of Seoul.
Kim is known to prefer Korean food when she goes overseas for training or competitions.
Among her favorites are "galbi" and "kimchi jjigae" ― braised short ribs and pot stew made with kimchi.
"Just as people around the world have been fascinated by Kim's beautiful jumps and fantastic performances, I expect that they will be attracted by the charm of Korean foods thanks to Kim's efforts," Agriculture Minister Chang Tae-pyong said.
Under Chang's stewardship, the MIFAFF has gone all-out of late to globalize local dishes by staging campaigns aimed at raising awareness of hansik or helping local corporations advance into overseas markets.
However, the ministry said that it would not overexploit Kim for the scheme.
"We understand that Kim is not an entertainer but a sportswoman who has to train. Accordingly, we plan not to burden her with a busy schedule or lots of events related to the promotion," MIFAFF official Moon Jee-in said.
"Instead, she will take part in some media conferences particularly with foreign journalists. Plus, we will be allowed to use her pictures in globalizing Korean food."
Kim basked in the limelight by sweeping aside figure skating rivals over the past few years. In spite of many challenges on her tiny shoulders, she also gave a record-breaking performance in the 2010 Winter Olympics to top the podium early this year.
In particular, she shattered the time-honored jinx that world champions fail to win the gold in the Olympics, thus becoming the country's first medalist of any color in figure skating.
Her popularity is not limited to Korea - she is now a global celebrity. Late last month, Time Magazine picked her as one of the "World's Most Influential People." Kim placed second in the "Heroes" section.

Kim Yu-na to debut as a singer
Figure skating queen Kim Yu-na is to debut as a singer. She is preparing for a duet with K-pop singer Lee Seung-gi, a news report said on Friday.
Kim and Lee, who are TV commercial models for KB Financial Group, were recently seen recording a song at a studio in Seoul, the report said.
Kim’s singing talent has been already proven in many TV shows.
The news report said the song recorded by the two was not a commercial song but a full-length Korean pop song.
Recently, Kim Yu-na has appeared in a new commercial for Samsung Hauzen Zero air conditioner , which also featured her personal coach Brian Orser and Korea’s No.2 skater, Kwak Min-jung.

Figure skating fans. As long as you observe carefully and pay attention to the mechanics/procedure that the skaters do for each jump, it's actually not that difficult to tell them apart once you've watched a few routines. The type of jump that a figure skater does basically is determined/depends on a combination of a couple of things:
a) which foot is used for the take-off (landing foot or non-landing foot),
b) whether the jump is an "edge only" jump or if the toe pick on the end of the other foot is used as a sort of "pole vault" to help initiate the jump (yes or no),
c) which edge of the blade is used in the take-off (inner edge or outer edge)
Using the ones you mentioned as an example:
axel (this is the proper way to spell it when referring to the jump, BTW) - "edge only" jump off of the outer edge of the non-landing foot that is done when the skater is moving forward (NB. this is the only jump where the take-off is done when the skater is moving forward, all others are done when he/she is moving backwards)
lutz - toe pick aided jump off of the outer edge of the non-landing foot
toe loop - tow pick aided jump off of the outer edge of the landing foot

Report: Olympic champ skater Kim Yu-na failed 2 university courses

SEOUL, South Korea -- Olympic figure skating champion Kim Yu-na reportedly received two Fs in her university courses last year.
South Korea's Yonhap news agency cited officials at Seoul's Korea University as saying the 19-year-old second-year student missed midterm and final exams because of her competition schedule.
Yonhap quoted a university official it did not identify as saying Kim handed in papers instead of taking exams but professors did not deem it possible to award credits based solely on those.
Yonhap said Korea University president Lee Ki-su told reporters he was aware of Kim's academic performance but did not divulge it.
Kim won gold at the Vancouver Olympics and is immensely popular in South Korea, where she is known as "Queen Yu-na."

Vancouver Olympic gold medalist Kim Yu-na plans a new performance with new music "Bulleproof," at the Ice show, "2010 All That Skate Summer," scheduled for July 23 to 25 in Goyang, Gyeonggi Province.
Bulleproof, written by La Roux, is not like the music the 19-year-old has used so far.
The tempo of the new song is faster than those previously used.
"A few months ago I listened to the music on The Ellen DeGeneres Show and I really liked it," Kim's choreographer Davis Wilson said in a statement.
"When Kim told me that she needed a new style for this ice show I felt that the music should be popular but it has to be totally different from the music many skaters have used to make new performance. So I chose Bulleproof," Wilson said.
"This program is expected to show a new style of ice show compared to those that have gone before," Kim's agent All That Sports said.
In order to have a powerful impact Kim was also coached by Clarence Ford.
"For the beginning of the show Wilson and Ford worked together," All That Sports said.
When the world record holder has performed in shows she has often chosen lyrical pieces such as Meditation de Thais, Gold and Only Hope.
The track "Don't Stop the Music," she used in last year's ice show, is the most up tempo music she has used to date.
"Bulletproof," sends the message to ladies to be strong and Kim will express strength with beauty as a role model.
For Kim's second ice show of the year, five-time world champion Michelle Kwan, Sasha Cohen of the United States, who has won the world championships twice, Slivia Fontana of Italy and rising Korean skater Kwak Min-jung will participate.
Among the male skaters Turin Olympics silver medalist Stephane Lambiel, 2009 Grand Prix Final champion Jeremy Abbott and John Zimmerman of the United States will share the rink.
Vancouver Olympics bronze-medal pair Aljona Savchenko and Robin Szolkowy and 2002 Olympic champions Jamie Sale and David Pelletier will also feature.
The leading skater for Korea's new generation Kim Hae-jin will debut at the ice show.

By a unanimous vote, the Los Angeles City Council passed a resolution proclaiming Aug. 7 as "Yu-Na Kim Day."
While the 20-year-old Olympic gold medalist's North American home-away-from-home is in Toronto, where she trains under two-time Olympic silver medalist Brian Orser, she has a special connection to the city: it's the site of her world title win in 2009, where she racked up a then-record 207.71 points.
The resolution was submitted by council members Herb Wesson and Tom LaBonge, who both represent Korean communities in their respective districts. Los Angeles has a population of more than 120,000 Korean-Americans. [...]

Figure skating queen Kim Yu-na will now take her spectacular ice show overseas this October.
The 2010 Vancouver Winter Games gold medalist will hold “2010 All That Skate LA” ice show in Los Angeles on Oct. 2 and 3, in her first performance as a host.
“The October show is a chance to unfold the show organized by the Korean agency,” an All That Sports representative, Kim’s agency, said in a statement, Monday.
Kim has performed in ice shows held abroad twice in 2007 ― “Dream on Ice” in Japan and “Mariposa Skating Charity Gala Show” in Canada ― but she and her agents decided to launch the gala show on their own this time.
“The reason why the city has been selected is because of the high level of support from LA citizens toward Yu-na,” the representative explained.
LA made this support public last Saturday by declaring it “Kim Yu-na” day, and granted her honorary citizenship. She also received the “Proud Koreans Award” from the Korean American Leadership Foundation in the city on the same day with Sammy Lee, the two-time Olympic gold medalist in men’s diving in 1948 and 1952.
Kim will present her show at LA Staples Center, the venue where the 2009 ISU World Figure Skating Championships took place.
Her Korean compatriots ― Kwak Min-jung and Kim Hae-jin whose performances brought them attention in the “All-That Skate Summer” show in July, here, could be absent this time as they would need to concentrate on three competitions this season.
Kim will return to Canada after the two-day show where she is training for the World Championships.

LONDON (Reuters) - Olympic champion Kim Yuna has fired her coach Brian Orser less than six months after he guided her to glory at the Vancouver Games.
Kim, the most famous female athlete in South Korea, credited Orser for her dazzling gold-medal performance in February when she earned record scores in the short and free programs, but that did not stop her abruptly terminating her four-year association with the Canadian.
"Meehee Park, Kim's mother,...met with Brian Orser...and informed the two-time Olympic medalist that he would no longer be retained to coach Kim," Orser's management IMG said in a statement.
"No reason was given for the sudden and unexpected decision."
Orser was told he was being fired on August 2 but had delayed making any announcement as he had hoped to work things out.
Kim's management company AT Sports later released a statement saying relations between the duo had been "uncomfortable" since May and that South Korea's only Olympic figure skating gold medalist had been training alone since June.
"I am grateful to the coach, Brian Orser, for being with me to help win the Olympics. I hope he may teach other athletes and achieve good results," Kim said in a statement. Under Orser, Kim captured a series of titles, including the world title in 2009.
"I am honored to have worked with such a talented and gifted skater," said Orser. "I wish her all the best as she moves forward in her skating career."
Forbes magazine lists Kim as one of the highest-paid female athletes in the world, with annual earnings of almost $10 million. (Editing by Clare Fallon)

On Feb. 26 in 2010, South Korea’s national flag the Taegeukgi was hung at the Pacific Coliseum in Vancouver Olympics.
At that time figure queen Kim Yu-na and her then coach Brian Orser shone together with the gold medal.
The duo always made perfect harmony and their story was touted to be a happy ending as highlighted in their joint commercial filming of an ice show.
But the situation changed suddenly seemingly because of Orser’s apparently careless press release on Tuesday (KST).
Worse still, Orser betrayed Kim by unveiling the world No. 1 figure skater’s new long program on Thursday via the AFP.
“It is a fantastic program, the best I’ve seen so far,” Orser told the AFP “It is well beyond even her (Olympic program) Concerto in F. It’s a complete departure.”
“The routine is set to a compilation of Korean music, featuring the famous folk song ‘Arirang,’” Orser revealed.
The Canadian coach gave another hint to the AFP and said Kim’s short program will be choreographed by Canadian ice dancer Shae-Lynn Bourne on the Labor Day weekend.
Orser should not have spoken about Kim’s veiled program. He could refute this by saying he was only talking about the music. But given his background as a former figure skater and present coach, he knows the importance of music in figure skating.
Following Orser’s words, Kim’s agent AT Sport found it hard to hide their embarrassment.
“We are very careful about his revealing of Kim’s new programs,” an AT Sports official said. “We are trying to grasp the real intention of why he revealed this. Regardless of his reasons, leaking the information without any prior agreement is definitely wrong,” added the official.
Yu-na’s choreographer David Wilson, said he had no idea before Orser’s revelation to the press.
“Before Orser did the interview he didn’t say he would reveal anything about the program. I am also really embarrassed,” Wilson said in a statement through AT Sports.
This all started on Tuesday.
On that day, IMG, Orser’s agency said in its press release that Kim’s mother Park Mee-hee, and All That Sports (AT Sports) informed Orser that he was not Kim’s coach any more.
After that AT Sports responded to Orser’s actions by press release.
According to the release, Kim and Orser were uncomfortable after the rumor the Canadian coach contacted Mao Asada to be her next coach in May and due to that reason, Kim has trained by herself since June.
AT Sports suggested Orser take a break for a while on Aug 2, which the Canadian accepted.
But on Monday, Orser said he would not act as Yu-na’s coach any longer and Kim’s side accepted this.
It could have been a normal separation between a coach and skater. But Orser turned it into a witch hunt against Kim’s mother by alleging she fired him and matters have become complicated.
Kim has to defend her mother based on facts. She couldn’t stand idly by when her mother was blamed without doing anything wrong.
Kim and Orser have the relationship of employer and employee. He is not Yu-na’s own coach.
In July citing the need to teach other skaters, he didn’t appear at Yu-na’s ice show in Korea.
Even despite the looming termination of the contract, he should not have done this.
Orser might have been upset but no employer says “If you don’t mind, could you quit your job?”
Orser said Kim had mentioned she could win the World Championship to the Sports Chosun, a local sport newspaper.
“If I was approached by Yu-na, it would definitely be a consideration. I want the best for this girl,” Orser said to the AFP.
There is a rumor that Kim is too cold toward the press and people. But it is not true.
Before she was a world figure skating star she was a regular young woman, just like anyone else her age.
What the fans want is watching Kim Yu-na’s great performances in competitions.
The pressure to maintain her position at the top is weighing on one shoulder while the other is loaded with the pressure to cope with these situations.
It could be enough to make Kim decide to retire earlier than expected.

Men figure skaters battle B-boys in LA on Oct. 2nd and 3rd at Staples Center/‘The Queen of Figure Skating,’ Kim Yuna is set to make her first appearance in an ice show in the U.S. with her gala program “Bulletproof.”
On September 27, 2010, Kim’s management agency, All that Sports Inc. (CEO Mi-Hee Park), released a statement that Yuna, along with 10 other figure skating acts, will be putting on a performance entitled ‘2010 All that Skate LA’ at Staples Center on October 2 and 3, 2010.‘
2010 All that Skate LA’ is Yuna’s first show being held overseas and she, along with ten of her most talented peers in the sport, are quickly captivating the attention of many fans of not only Korea, but the US as well. Expectations and anticipations arise as this ice show brings together the best skaters from across the globe as they plan to put on dramatic performances to the sounds of pop, classic, opera and other genres of music as well.
The classical piece ‘Meditation For Thais’ and the funky beats of ‘Bulletproof’ chosen by Yuna for this performance captures the elegance of the art of figure skating. This showcase marks the first time Yuna will perform ‘Bulletproof’ to her fans in the US. ‘Figure Skating Legend’ Michelle Kwan will also be performing two gala performances of her own. Figure skater Kim Yu-na will host a new television show titled “Kim Yu-na’s Kiss and Cry” which will be aired on SBS from May 22.
The program will portray the challenging process of ten popular entertainers as they learn how to figure skate from professional skaters.
Kim will host the show together with comedian Shin Dong-yeop and also serve as a mentor as well as judge the participants’ performances.
The ten stars include comedian Kim Byung-man, singer U-Know of TVXQ, Crystal of f(x), IU, Son Dam-bi, actors Park Jun-geum, Seo Ji-suk, Lee Ah-hyun, Jin Ji-hee and speed skater Lee Kyu-hyuk.
Professional skaters will be paired with each participant and be tasked with multiple missions. The winners will have the opportunity to take part in Kim’s ice show slated for August.
“’Kiss and Cry’ is the first variety show to take place in an ice skating arena in Korea,” an SBS official said.
The first episode will feature various performances to overview the talents and basic skills of the participants and introduce Kim’s skating show.

If you can't catch her at a competition I suggest going to one of her Ice shows. I watched her "All that skate" show in LA in like 2010 and it was fucking beautiful. :inlove:
