Improved running game shaping up for Texans

Gary Kubiak is ready for the Texans to make their first true playoff run, and the key word is run. Kubiak hired blocking guru Alex Gibbs to revamp the offensive line and install his athletic, attacking zone-blocking scheme. Though much of the success of the running offense depends on the health of veteran running back Ahman Green, the early reviews of the transition along the line are good.

Upstart Titans not resting on laurels

Even though the Titans were a surprise team in 2007 with 10 wins and a trip to the playoffs, they made a lot of changes.

Mike Heimerdinger replaced Norm Chow as offensive coordinator. The Titans wiped out seven of the eight remaining members of the 2004 draft class. They traded troubled cornerback Pacman Jones. Longtime guard Benji Olson retired. The Titans hope the changes will allow new players to emerge, which in turn will help the team take the next stop.

That would be the preference of Adam Jones, the suspended Dallas Cowboys cornerback who has been known by the nickname throughout his life. He'd like to be called by his given name and make "Pacman" a thing of the past.

"There's really just a lot of negativity behind it," Jones said. "It's just time for a change, man. I'm doing everything to make sure that I'm all right as a person, mentally and emotionally."

Iowa town turns to football to recover from tornado

PARKERSBURG, Iowa -- Step-by-step, Jared DeVries walks deeper into the nightmare that is his former high school. Every time his white cross trainers hit the ground, he is greeted by another noise: the crackling of broken glass here and the squish of wet ceiling tiles there.

The Detroit Lions defensive end has read the articles, seen the pictures and watched the videos. His friends and family warned him about what to expect.

It was a just about four weeks ago, on the evening of May 25, when an EF5 tornado, three-quarters of a mile wide, with winds in excess of 200 mph, ripped through this community of 1,900, destroying or damaging nearly half the town. The tornado, which stayed in Parkersburg for 34 seconds before traveling another 43 miles, killed six people and leveled 21 businesses, the city hall and the heart of the community: Aplington-Parkersburg High School.

Young finding balance on, off the field

NASHVILLE, Tenn. -- When Mike Heimerdinger first broke down Vince Young's game, the coach's primary concern was the quarterback's base.

Friends offer counsel, support -- if Walker decides he wants it

Ray Sherman knows life hasn't been right for Javon Walker since the first day of 2007.

Walker's world has taken a turn that worries Sherman, the Dallas Cowboys' receivers coach and a longtime Walker mentor.

"It's not him," said Sherman, who became a father figure to Walker while the two were in Green Bay together. "We need to sit down and talk. He needs to say what is going on, what is bothering him. We need to hammer it out. I'm concerned. I'm worried about him."

Snee signs $43.5M deal as Giants keep young offensive line together

EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. -- The New York Giants guaranteed that their offensive line will stay together for the foreseeable future, signing guard Chris Snee on Wednesday to a six-year, $43.5 million contract extension.

Snee, 26, will earn nearly $24 million in the first three years of the deal, agent Tony Agnone said.

The extension will keep the right guard under contract with the Super Bowl champions through 2014.

Goodell on rookie pay: 'There's something wrong'

CHAUTAUQUA, N.Y. -- NFL commissioner Roger Goodell said it's "ridiculous" to reward untested rookies with lucrative contracts, and wants the issue addressed in contract talks.

"There's something wrong about the system," Goodell said Friday. "The money should go to people who perform."

Highly touted juniors across the country are enjoying a little downtime. Soon enough, they'll be back on campus, getting ready for football season.

Favre heads to Green Bay as NFL announces reinstatement

GREEN BAY, Wis. -- Brett Favre will be reinstated and added to the Green Bay Packers' active roster Monday.

The NFL announced the move Sunday. Commissioner Roger Goodell had held off on granting Favre's request for reinstatement for nearly a week.

Cowboys told Pacman will be reinstated for opener

IRVING, Texas -- Adam "Pacman" Jones has been cleared to play for the Dallas Cowboys this season.

The cornerback-kick returner was suspended all last season, when he was with the Tennessee Titans, because of an accumulation of arrests and legal problems. He was traded to the Cowboys in April, then allowed in June by commissioner Roger Goodell to join the team in training camp and in preseason games.
