Left 4 Dead is a co-operative survival horror first-person shooter video game. It was developed by Turtle Rock Studios,
which was purchased by the Valve Corporation part-way into development. The game uses the Source engine, and is
available for Windows and the Xbox 360. The game went gold on November 13, 2008, and was released on November
18, 2008, in the United States; and on November 21, 2008, in Europe to coincide with the tenth anniversary of the release
of Half-Life.
The game pits four people—appropriately called the Survivors—of an apocalyptic pandemic against hordes of the Infected,
zombie-like aggressive infected people. There are three game modes: a single player mode in which allied characters are
controlled by AI; a four-player, co-op Campaign mode; and an eight-player Versus mode. In all modes, an AI, dubbed
"The Director", controls level pacing and item spawns, in an attempt to create a dynamic experience and increase replay value.
Left 4 Dead was well received with an aggregate score of 88% on Game Rankings and 89% on Metacritic upon its release,
with praise given for its replay value, focus on cooperative play, and movie-like experience. As was done with Team Fortress 2,
Valve intends to supplement the game with downloadable content
Surprised no one's made a thread about this masterpiece yet. I play it all the time, and it seems like more and more of the people I know are joining in on the action. hehe I played it a few times when it came out, never actually played it all the way through either.
I kinda got bored though, I know lots of people like it and it does seem like a cool game but for me I get frustrated by the smallest things and just quit and go play TF2

Yar. Because there's so much emphasis on team play, you really need to play with friends to make sure your teamates don't suck. Cause if they do, you just can't win no matter how good you are individually.

PC version for me. I've done 2/4 campaigns on Expert with some friends of mine. The twist is they all live in Australia, so my ping is around 330-350, which makes things very interesting since there's so much of a delay on the hits/kills and people are teleporting all around you. :lol:

Played it for 2 weeks nearly everyday now and have yet to finish a campaign :lol: Most of the time, the players I join with are generally sound guys, who want to play it the right way. But there's at least 1 person who plays it like Rambo and just lets the team down as a result. And I'm not talking about if they're playing poorly, that could happen to anybody, hell I'm still getting to grips with the maps. I'm talking constantly shooting teammates, not healing others or reviving players. Just yesterday on Death Toll, we were at the Finale waiting for the boat to arrive and after surviving nearly 3 hordes and 2 tank ambushes, 2 of our guys were dead and I was down on the ground incapicated. What do you think the other player does? Chase after a Boomer. Consequently, he was grabbed by a Smoker. Idiot. I was 3ft away, if he just revived me we could have finished the campaign.
But just playing through L4D is so worthwhile. The gore, the scares, the fact that everybody gets nervous when a Witch is near, the B-horror movie vibe. It's really all good.

Does the PC version have votekick?
I get nervous when a witch is near because I wonder if my other teammates are going to shoot at her. Same goes for people who don't melee boomers first before killing them close range.

Oh yeah it does. As for witches, I've got crowning down to a science, so I just run up and drop her the MOMENT I see her. Give the infected time and they'll setup next to her and try for an accidental hit or, even better, to melee her when you get too close so that she jumps the nearest person.
On a side note, I played the other day and this guy was on the mic the entire time screaming about every little thing that happened and just generally being an idiot.

I swear you should build a rating when you play that game that shows how good you are, and then have the "Find a Game" put you with people at your skill level. QuakeLive style. Just one failhead and it makes it damn near impossible to get through to the safe room in Versus.

Valve today revealed the third of five campaigns for Left 4 Dead 2, Dark Carnival, and Eurogamer popped round to the firm's Bellevue office to try it out.
We'll have a comprehensive work-up of what we saw soon, but in the meantime you probably want to check out the first screenshots of Dark Carnival, and hear about things like the new special infected, the Jockey.
The Jockey's a right pain in the neck, appearing out of nowhere and hopping onto one of the survivors' backs. He or she then loses control of movement, allowing the Jockey to steer the pair into dangerous territory, where other infected can pile on the damage.
It's particularly frustrating for the survivors when one of their number is caught straggling, because the Jockey can ride them further and further away from the main group, potentially costing the team even more vital time, health and ammo than, say, a Hunter could by pinning a wayward player.
Dark Carnival itself ("You must be this tall... TO DIE!") begins on a highway, as the survivors inch through and around abandoned cars in the direction of the Ferris wheel and candy stripes on the horizon.
Following a few close shaves and a descent down a slippery hillside (which the AI director saw fit to spice up with a tank - thanks for that), the survivors work through a two-storey motel complex, with roomed-up infected bashing chunks out of every door they pass to try and get at them, and then make their way into the carnival itself, full of infected-packed tents and stalls.

Dark Carnival joins The Parish and Swamp Fever on the L4D2 campaign list. I snuck a look at the others on the campaign menu when no one was looking, but am too polite to report on them. But: hot.
There's a new uncommon common infected to fight - you may remember the hazmat-wearing CEDA infected and riot police with Kevlar from previous reveals - dressed as a clown, who calls other infected over to him. At this stage there's also an Achievement for honking his nose, although these are subject to change.
Valve said that some of the parlor games at the carnival will actually work in the final version, and drew our attention to quirky touches like the peanut man cutouts (he has a nutty nemesis - moustachio) before we hit the climactic point of the two-stage Dark Carnival demo: the merry-go-round crescendo moment.
Waving our katanas, axes and the new electric guitar melee weapons around happily, we set this off, and discovered the goal was to run around it to reach the off switch and stem the growing (and indeed infinite) tide of infected that attack you as you try to do so. Again, the director felt the need to help out by depositing a Witch in our path. Whacking her with the guitar was an error.
There's a lot more to talk about - like the way the Jockey works with other special infected including the other new boys, the Spitter and the Charger, and the simple, immeasurable brilliance of adding proper gibs and limb-loss to the game's existing technical base - but we'll save that for the full preview, coming soon.
There was one other touch to note right at the end though - the classic between-level music you get as you swing the saferoom door closed has been spiced up for Left 4 Dead 2, with a different twist on it for each new campaign.

So funny, lol from what I've read, everyone is really overreacting about the ban as well. Most likely it's something stupid like possibly drug use. But whatever, as if Valve is not going to fix it for us so we can play. I remember when Fallout 3 got refused and they had to change all the names of the drugs XD

I ordered Left 4 Dead 2 for the 360. Gonna make some more zombie heads roll! Can't wait. Also excited to hear about this:
Valve’s newly announced DLC for Left 4 Dead is called The Sacrifice. It’s not sacrificing much though since it works with both Left 4 Dead 2 and the first games, essentially becoming the first DLC I can think of that isn’t for a single game but a series.
The Sacrifice will tell the story of the last piece of L4D2 DLC, The Passing, from the perspective of the four characters from the original L4D game. You will be able to see how they meet up with the second game’s characters and make a key decision at the end of the piece which accounts for the DLC’s title.
Along with the new DLC there will be a campaign from the first game, No Mercy, updated and made available for owners of Left 4 Dead 2 to play through. This mission was set inthe hospital and is one of the most loved from the original game.
Finally, rounding out our Left 4 Dead news, there will be a new digital comic beginning next month. The purpose of this digital comic is to get everyone up to speed on the events which take place during the campaign (so there will be spoilers).
The Sacrifice is set to be a free download for PC and Mac and paid DLC for the Xbox 360.

The final twist is that the launch of this DLC will coincide with the launch of the Mac version of Left 4 Dead 2. The DLC will be available for all three versions – free on Mac and PC, the usual 560 points (£4.80/$7) on Xbox 360.

Finally! I got Left 4 Dead 2! For the 360, I would love to play with you guys on PC but my laptop doesn't even have a dedicated graphics card so no dice XD
Anyway about the game....I love it. And I've only played the Dead Center campaign. What surprised me the most about playing it is just how much more zombies there are this time round. Like, those zombies did not stop coming in the 3rd act, I can't imagine how it would be like in Expert or in Realism mode :o In fact there was so many, that I got the achievement for decapitating 200 zombies by the time it ended. On normal. I killed 693 zombies by the end of it all. Holy shit. I love it! I ran around a corner and saw something out of the corner of my eye, turned and looked down and the witch just turned her head around to look at me at that moment. As someone who dealt with a lot of witches in L4D1, I'd never ever been so scared by one as I did then :nervous
Liking the new survivors too, Nick is a funny guy. Rochelle's no Zoey but then who is? :P

The major changes include:

The Sacrifice was rather...underwhelming, to say the least. If the comic was anything to go by, then the story of the original survivors seems to have drawn to a close. The way The Sacrifice ends just leaves a disappointing experience considering you might not even play as the original characters in new campaigns. I expected an almighty stand off, the horde relentless and unforgiving and yet what you do get is a character just jumping down, switching on a generator while the other 3 are impervious from harm, generator switches on and...that's it. Disappointing.

EPIC FAIL! I was playing No Mercy with some random people and I fucking fell through the elevator floor and died XD

Finally got into an Expert campaign that didn't cut out on me after 2 mins. Cleared Dead Centre Stage 1 ok, but Stage 2 was a nightmare. Must of got halfway through for about 10 times until something happened that just resulted in us dying. One time we got past a particularly tricky area for us, and was running on the walkway to reach the gun shop, and as we were going down the stairs, an idiot in our team threw a molotov right at our feet and killed all of us. :banghead:
It was about the 12th time that I just had to give up. Truly challenging but I love it for that. Expert realism mode must be so tough :o
And I got the achievement to collect 100 gas cans in scavenge and get 15 cans in one round all in the same game, and it wasn't even with one of the newer maps that have 22 cans as the upper limit :thumbsup

Hooray, I got the achievement to get all 4 survivors with a single acid patch yesterday! Something that sounds so simple yet really hard to achieve :nervous
I really like the Mutation modes! Wish there was a way for them to be kept after they're done. Having a Versus game where everyone on the infected team are tanks is just hilarious. This 'Lone Gunman' one is a neat idea too. It's a single player mode where you're the only survivor and the only weapon you have is the Desert Eagle. And to add to that, the only special infected you will encounter are Boomers.
Still working on trying to beat a game on Expert. Haven't even done it with Realism on Normal.

I cleared my first L4D2 campaign on Expert yesterday! It was Dark Carnival. Never underestimate the power of a speed run lol

Why am I always paired with such fucking idiots lately? Tried an Expert run of Dead Centre and couldn't get past the 2nd stage after some horrible, horrible decisions from the other players. Who on earth would pass up a pipe bomb that's right in front of them? Who on earth would attempt to run past the zombies at the beginning of the stage, when they're everywhere? Multiple times! Who on earth would chainsaw a witch?! WHO ON EARTH WOULD OPEN UP THE STORE DOOR AND GET THE COLA WHEN WE'RE TRYING TO KILL A FUCKING TANK?!.
Have to laugh at the stupidity but it is getting annoying lately. I expect to die and repeat quite a number of times on Expert, but I can't forgive stupid decisions like that.

shirenu, Stryfe, and myself were running some Survival earlier, and got in a bit of campaign action. Survival was.. the opposite of what we achieved. We did mighty fine on the
(easy) campaigns though :grin:

Anyone ever cleared any of the campaigns on Realism Expert? Seems extreme but I'm determined to get it! Problem is there's hardly anyone on the 360 to find a game and play with, let alone good players.

I laughed for a good while after that :sweatdrop: (Rootop Finale on No Mercy) Everything went peachy until the chopper came. I had been dicking around with the grenade launcher and dual handguns. Unfortunately, all three of them became incapacitated at once. So instead of trying to fight off all the zombies and tanks, find a proper gun, attempt a rescue for all three of them, I just let them all die, to be fair. :shocked:

On a related note, I've been fucking around with L4D mapping. It's quite a bit more work than for TF2, mostly because of the nav meshes :doh: I do have a crappy WIP though, that is actually playable to an extent. Meaning for it to be some survival junk later on :yep:

Finally found a lobby on Expert with good players, the ones that communicate what's happening and what to expect from Hard Rain on Expert and you know what? We couldn't even make it past the 2nd level. Seriously, a good hour was spent trying to get through that Sugar Mill without alerting a witch or have a horde on us every 10 ft and that's before you even call the elevator. :bleed eyes:

Ok I think I'm done with trying to play with randoms at Expert level on L4D2 now. It all started off so promisingly, we got through Dead Center chapter 1 easy enough only to reach chapter 2, first try, and have a horde arrive right outside the saferoom door. One of the good players left and then after that *sigh*. Had experience with a griefer who came in and shot everybody mid-level before leaving and playing most of the time with bots. Really it's just the level of patience that randoms have, if they die first time round they just back out immediately. Don't play expert then! You're gonna die, simple as! And there's little chance of finding other people to join the session because L4D2 on Xbox Live is pretty much dead, particularly players willing to play on Expert.
What I want is to play with some mates, but there's no chance of it happening as I think nobody on my friend's list has L4D2, or plays it regularly. It sucks.

Four experienced players + mics = easy win for expert mode. I can usually go through expert levels on my own with 3 CPU characters, but then we would get destroyed in the finale since they tend to get picked off and won't react fast enough to others getting picked off.
I really would like to get some of them done someday. It's just difficult to organize.

Co-op zombie kill-em-up Left 4 Dead 2 will enjoy new downloadable content, Valve has announced – but there's a twist.
Cold Stream is an in the works community campaign created by modder Matthew Lourdelet. Valve is so impressed, it wants it finished and chucked into DLC. But it wants the L4D community's help.
"The very first step in creating a new DLC is deciding on the larger goals and constraints for the DLC," wrote Valve on the Left 4 Dead blog.
"The Sacrifice and the Passing were story heavy, so we want to see what the other end of the spectrum looks like. For this DLC we start with wanting to experiment by releasing a map pack that wasn't about story. It would just be new campaigns for Left 4 Dead 2."
What this means is Cold Stream doesn't have new audio or story. But the DLC will include the three remaining L4D1 campaigns, with Cold Stream added.
"That's the start of the DLC," Valve added. "We have the basic information but we don't even have a name or release date yet."
We do know, however, that the DLC will release "sometime after Portal 2", and launch for the Mac, PC and Xbox 360.
"In the next few weeks we will add Cold Stream to the UI (user interface) and we will all begin testing it," Valve continued. "As we receive feedback and test data we will also share some data we collect on player experience and show how we put that data to use.
"While the beta will only be available for PC and Mac users, we appreciate feedback and ideas from the entire community. This is an experiment for us, so please let us know what you think and what you would like to see in the DLC – just remember the constraints."

Anyone of you PC players tried out the beta of the new map they're going to release soon? It's called Cold Stream, a fan made campaign that's had some help from the developers at Valve to glamour it up a little. Would be interesting to see what it's like. Also included in this new DLC pack is all of the remaining L4D1 campaigns to use in L4D2 much like No Mercy was handled in the previous release. That will be awesome, can't wait.

Valve's asking players to test Left 4 Dead 2's Cold Stream campaign. If 20,000 players finish it by Sunday, they'll release the Dead Air campaign early!

^ Pity Cold Stream still isn't the greatest campaign, and it seems to kill a slower computer... but they've improved it a lot since the last I tried it.
Note that you need to play it from start to finish and (likely) survive the finale to get the achievement. Tested today. :P

Earlier this week, Valve issued a challenge to the Left 4 Dead 2 community: if 20,000 players beat the in-development "Cold Stream" campaign by Sunday, they'd get the re-release of "Dead Air" early. That goal was met in about four hours.
That means Left 4 Dead 2 owners will get the tweaked Left 4 Dead campaign early. No later than July 22, Valve says—barring an outbreak of Valve Time, naturally. The developer says its testing and finalizing the "Dead Air" re-release, as it's not yet ready for prime time.
Also interesting is that the Left 4 Dead team says it's "working on and testing a new version of the 'Dark Carnival' finale and some gameplay changes for finales in general." Dark Carnival clearly has its own final quirks, but I'm interested to see what Valve has planned for other finale changes.
I wonder if the Dead Air release will be PC only. And finale changes? Very interesting.

Been playing through L4D2 custom campaigns in alphabetical order (the ones we have) and making notes because we tend to forget which ones were which etc.
Anyway, so far:
2019 - OK! Pretty fast campaign; should be on advanced; anti-climatic ending; Masa iirc had a graphic bug with the walls
25 to Life - OK! Short-ish; should be on advanced
2 evil eyes - seems like we don't have the same version so... deletion period for me
7 Hours Later - frustrating stumbling around in the woods with tons of hordes; a long and challenging campaign even on easy. If you die, there are hardly any closets to get saved from :( Finale is difficult (or we haven't found the right strategy yet); Masa had graphic bugs

MORE CAMPAIGN REVIEWS
Blood Tracks: Huge areas in maps, so can be on the heavy side -> laggy. Bots don't always understand the map layout -> get stuck when everyone else is in the safe room lol. The finale is lag hell, with tons of specials spawning. But hey. It's passable.
City 17: Pretty fun! Lots of witches. Advanced means advanced. Not bad lag most of the time. I think our consensus was that this is challenging (on advanced), but in a fun way.
Dam It: Awrite. The finale is challenging and even bitchy at times, we've passed it a few times but it was only easy during the Hunting season mutation :3 (Probably because no spitters or chargers)
Dark Blood: Hoards are HOARDS. A few frustrating bits where they just keep coming and it's a pain to get forward. The finale is just RIDICULOUS, this quite open structure with various levels and constant hordes where you have to collect fricking cans. No matter where you go, even if you try to stick together, you're pretty much screwed. TBH if I deleted this, I wouldn't miss it

^ Blood Tracks... can't comment on the lag but I think it's otherwise pretty decent, and the finale is pretty nice and hectic, although we probably figured out the winning strategy already.
Dam It is pretty short, if we wanna keep track of that, but it's good, especially the finale. To be honest I think we just got majorly screwed this time because of the bots. :P
Also, damn, Dark Blood is pretty good stuff with fun crescendo events and surprise tanks, right up until the finale, which is a mind-bogglingly difficult scavenger hunt. Easy to get lost, and the oilrig is tall with crazyass ladders and shit. Getting stuck on the ladder half-way up to the sky with zombies both above and below you is not particularly fun.

Thanks to your hard work a few weeks ago, we are releasing a beta version of Dead Air for Left 4 Dead 2 today. This will be available on the Xbox 360 later this summer as part of the full Cold Stream DLC.
Besides adding melee weapons, we have made some changes to the 4th and 5th maps of the campaign. Give them a few play throughs and let us know what you think. Make sure to try some different strategies – especially in the finale.
We have also tried something new with the Scavenge map in this campaign. I won’t give away the experiment here but it should be interesting to see how people choose to play the map.
Cold Stream and the rest of the Left 4 Dead 1 maps will be out later this summer as part of the Cold Stream DLC.

I managed to beat the Dead Center campaign on Expert last night!! :w00t: Nice to play with someone who knows what the hell they're doing. So that's that plus Hard Rain and I think Swamp Fever as campaigns I've passed on Expert. Want to see if I can clear the other two now!

Dead Series: A little different and fun, longish, can get laggy for shi, the 'best available' servers for this sucked when we played
Death Aboard: A map with alternate routes; fun, different as it's partly on a huge tilted ship, challenging, has the lighthouse finale.
Detour Ahead: OK! Challenging even on normal. Quite long, lots of hordes, has the train track finale that can be tricky.
Die Screaming: Challenging. From shirenu's notes: VITTU mikä finaali ('FUCK what a finale'). I wish I had made more notes, but I suppose this is a good campaign for practicing one's skills and cursing :lol:
Haunted Forest: EVERYONE NEEDS TO RE-DL THIS (except pika). I tested this solo because I remembered that not all of us have the same version, and I was right. It's a fun tourism map, the haunted house especially; I recommend playing through that once solo because you might not see everything playing in a group, since there are a lot of flashes that only happen once so only the first person or two going in will see it. The finale on my version was very lackluster: just keep running and nothing will happen to you. I hope this has been fixed in the version that pika has, and I will download in just a moment. :3

So, playing the Dark Carnival campaign on Expert. Took me and some randomers about 1hr and 30mins. Did ok, had to restart on certain levels but made it to the finale eventually. Try it once and failed, ok no biggie. EXCEPT, the host quits and all of us get kicked out as a result! The first thought that entered my head was...

Four swordsmen - Only katanas, only specials. Pretty fun
Not recommended:
Special delivery - Double specials and only specials... This one's challenging in a frustrating way (as in, good luck making it halfway through the map. Or maybe we just suck.)
Flu season - Only boomers and spitters. Omg the worst. lol
