Multiple Sources Confirm New Nintendo HD Console

Mario Press Conference (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eQVjYNE2Kew#ws)

Gamers have been waiting years for Nintendo to finally release its Wii successor, and Game Informer has heard from multiple sources that the company will unveil it at E3 this summer if not sooner.

We have confirmed with multiple sources that this new home system is capable of running games at HD resolutions. There are conflicting reports, however, as to whether its graphics will be comparable to those on the Xbox 360 and PlayStation 3 – meaning it could surpass or fall short of those systems. Either way it will offer competitive specifications. Moving to HD should greatly help Nintendo and its new console in getting more multi-platform triple-A titles like Portal 2 or Mortal Kombat. This, in turn, will strengthen Nintendo's historically poor relationship with third-party publishers/developers.

In fact, Nintendo is already showing publishers the system in an effort to get them interested and allow them plenty of time to start developing titles in anticipation of the system's reported late 2012 launch. This advance support marks a change from when the Wii launched. At that time, several Western publishers were outright surprised by the announcement, and it affected the software support for the platform.

Nintendo president Satoru Iwata himself acknowledged that it needs to do a better job with its publishing partners at a 3DS press conference in the fall of 2010. "We need to decrease the concern that only Nintendo software can sell well on Nintendo platforms and third-party software cannot sell in the same volume. We feel a need to have closer ties with our third-party developers from the beginning." (http://www.gameinformer.com/b/news/archive/2011/04/14/new-nintendo-console-at-e3.aspx)

Interesting stuff if true. My biggest question would be with the motion control stuff. If they want third party publishers on board and want to win back the hardcore market, does it mean more games played with a regular controller, or will these games be built with motion control still in mind? I would imagine one of the features people would like is full backwards compatibility with the Wii so I imagine it probably will stick with motion control in some form. But will the hardcore really stick with it when they view motion control as a gimmick?

Nintendo did themselves no favours with the hardcore this generation. Some great games on the Wii no doubt, but simply not enough and the emphasis has been more on the casual market who, predictably, have grown bored with it.

I'm not sure if it really will be greater than the 360 or PS3 though. I'm not doubting that Nintendo have the capibility, after all both of those consoles have about 5 year old architectures behind them, but it costs a lot of money to make consoles like that, and that's why MS and Sony sell their hardware at a loss. Nintendo policy seems that they sell their hardware at a profit. Also the timing is a bit off to me. If the rumours are true then yes they could release it now and maybe get 2-4 years as the most powerful console on the market. But what about when MS and Sony decide to release a new console? The Wii2 or whatever would fall behind yet again. Why not make a slightly more powerful version of the Wii for the time being, reign in those sales for a while, whilst simultaneously working on a console that could fall in line and compete with MS and Sony and truly make it a 3 horse race the next generation comes around?

Still, exciting times ahead. Mario and Zelda in HD?

Whatever they wind up doing, I hope they keep up the quality work. I'd kill to have my Wii back, instead of the PS3 or 360. A Wii with some more processing juice would be nice, but I really don't need a third FPS box.

Wii 2 is coming (http://www.giantbomb.com/news/nintendo-confirms-new-console-for-2012-details-at-e3-2011/3065/) More details at E3 apparently.

Interesting stuff if true. My biggest question would be with the motion control stuff.

According to Ars Technica, the controller will include a touchscreen.

Ahead of its time once again. Maybe in 20 years or so there will be a console to match everything the Dreamcast had.

I'm actually fascinated what this is gonna be and look like. O_o I always get excited when the big new systems come out.

They should just re-release the Dreamcast. I still play mine very regularly.

I think this is a more apt comparison, actually:

I always felt that the Wii should've been HD capable right from the get-go, and as intrigued as I am about the possible touchscreen controllers, I also feel that the Wii's nunchuk configuration had a lot of potential that wasn't fully realized outside of a few games. Still, with all of the success of this console generation I'm sure Nintendo will put their resources to good use...I just hope they can better attract both the casuals and "hardcore" folks and have a better online system this time around!

Also interesting is that Nintendo's striking first this time around; usually they're the last ones to release a console each generation. But with the current generation lasting quite a while I guess it's to be expected...though I honestly thought the previous generation (PS2/GC/Xbox) could've lasted longer than it did.

This also means my plans to trade/transfer to a black Wii are probably out the window.

A bunch of details on the Wii U were released today.

Quote
Nintendo has announced a Wii U release date of December 8 in Japan.

The news was announced by Nintendo CEO Satoru Iwata during a Wii U webcast on the Japanese Nintendo Direct site, which the company also used to confirm a Wii U price tag of 31,500 yen (£252/$405) for a Premium model and 26,250 yen (£210/$338) for a Basic one.

The Premium model will come with a built-in flash memory capacity of 32GB, a Wii U GamePad, a Wii U GamePad stylus, a Wii U GamePad charging stand, a Wii U GamePad playing stand, a Wii U stand, an HDMI cable, and AC adapters for the system and controller.

The Basic model will offer a built-in flash memory capacity of 8GB, and the same contents as above minus the Wii U GamePad charging stand, Wii U GamePad playing stand and Wii U stand.

Nintendo also announced the first Wii U game prices, with New Super Mario Bros. U and NintendoLand set to be launch titles, plus prices for peripherals like the Wii U GamePad and Wii U Controller Pro.

The Japanese event will be followed up by a broadcast on the Nintendo Europe website at 3 p.m. (UK time), where full UK release and price info for Wii U is expected to be revealed.

The EU broadcast will run parallel with a New York press event where the Wii U US release date is also expected to be announced, with coverage taking place on the region's Nintendo Direct website.

I briefly played the Wii U at the Japan Expo in Brussels.

I'm not really into all the tech details, but I can tell that the graphics looked really good. Granted, I don't a own Wii or PS3, so maybe everything 'next gen' looks good to me haha. Played the new Rayman game which ran smoothly, had tons of action on screen and made good use of the touch screen controller. They also had the a Mario game and Paper Mario, which both looked great as well (both graphics and entertainment value).

However, the Wii U looks pretty big and it's pretty damn ugly. The touch screen controller was lighter than expected, but I'm not convinced by it. Seems like a pain to hold it for extended periods of time. I also had a beef with the wii-mote and that is the location of the 'z-button'. If you hold the wii-mote sideways and you need to press hold the button on the back (which made the character run) you had to push it in a very unnatural direction. It cramped my hand instantly and as a result I kept jumping in the cliffs  :nervous

Yeah, it's been criticized for having a lot of multi-platform ports, but if it has the best versions of ACIII, COD:BOII, or Arkham City it would win a lot of cred.

My collection:

Physical format:
Nintendo Land
New Super Mario Bros. U + New Super Luigi U
Super Mario 3D World

eShop:
NES REMIX

Virtual Console:
Contra III The Alien Wars
EarthBound
Kirby's Adventure
Mega Man X2

Super Castlevania IV
Super Mario Bros.
The Legend of Zelda: A Link to the Past

I've had a WiiU since launch - I share it with my BF, here are the games we've accumulated since launch:
Whoa! That's quite a collection! I have owned the console since last November. I wasn't super impressed by the launch games so I decided to wait for a game I just couldn't live without. And that game ended up being Super Mario 3D World. Fortunately it did not disappoint and in my opinion SM3DW alone makes Wii U worth owning. It's THAT good.  Anyways even though my Wii U game library is still quite small I've totally fallen in love with the system. My absolute favorite feature is the Off-TV option which is absolutely perfect for NES & SNES games :thumbsup

By the way, is ZombiU worth getting? This one local online store is having a sale and they have a bunch of Wii U games (Epic Mickey 2, ZombiU, Splinter Cell Blacklist, The Smurfs 2) for 10.95€.

E-SHOP IS FUCKING EVIL, SO MANY COMPLETELY RANDOM DOWNLOADS. "OH LOOK, THERE'S A SALE ON TODAY, LET ME JUST DOWNLOAD ALL OF THESE GAMES; AIGHHHHHT". Jesus. How many copies of Super Mario World does one person need? APPARENTLY AT LEAST 4????!?!?!?!??! .....
Shiiiet I know the feeling. Like I already had A Link to the Past for SNES and Wii VC but of course it wasn't enough. Good thing you only have to pay like 1.50€ if you wanna upgrade your Wii VC game. Being able to play the game on the gamepad is totally worth the price.

And now they're bringing in the GBA games. :| I am not ready.
I feel like I already have more games than I have time to play but I don't think I can resist Kirby.... and Metroid... and Mario & Luigi... and the list goes on :sweatdrop:

I would say yes. It's one of the most nerve wrecking games I've ever played, and I'm not able to play much of it at a time. I haven't made a lot of progress in it yet, but it is in my opinion one of the most successful zombie games out there. It covers the survival horror aspect of it brilliantly.

I am far more excited about the WiiU version than the 3DS version, but since the WiiU version won't be out until later, I will most likely end up getting both versions ... orz. Why am I so weak?

I am terrible at fighting games, yes, even Super Smash Bros., but the concept and character selection draws me in anyway. The added game mode with the multiplayer adventure crawl brawl thing looks super fun, though, and I am extremely happy that both versions get online multiplayer! I am really loving the positive spin they are taking on their leaderboard stats and game matching as well. This is truly the way to do it. Leaderboards that tell me I'm #7352878925729875923 are super boring and I never check them. Having a leaderboard tell me I'm better than 136716 people is far more exciting (and motivating) :D

Mario Kart 8 Free Game Promotion Now Available In Scandinavian Countries

Nintendo of Europe and product distributor Bergsala have today offered alternative support for those in Scandinavian countries without a Club Nintendo account, wishing to participate in the Mario Kart 8 bonus promotion.

Announced last month as part of a special Mario Kart 8 Nintendo Direct, the promotion required consumers to register the game to a Club Nintendo account before July 31, in order to receive the free Wii U title. But countries that do not currently support Club Nintendo were left in the dark, without official support.

In an announcement posted today for Denmark, Finland, Sweden and Norway, consumers who purchase the upcoming racing title will receive a special pin code, which can then be registered to a particular website. Once registered, fans will be issued with a download code for their requested free Wii U title. The ten titles on offer are exactly the same as Europe and include The Legend of Zelda: Wind Waker HD, Pikmin 3, Wii Party U and Nintendo Land, just to name a few. For more information, you can access Nintendo’s official Scandinavian websites.

Downloaded Mario Kart 8 right at Midnight last night! I love it a lot. It's a gorgeous game with great music and the tracks are super innovative but it still feels like good old Mario Kart. I cleared all the 50cc's with no problem last night, but I did notice that steering with the Wii U controller on tilt mode isn't quite as smooth and easy as the wii mote was on Mario Kart Wii... so that will take some getting used to. But all and all I really, really recommend this one.

I don't think I've ever been this excited about a Mario Kart game xD I loved the original SNES game, but none of the other titles in the series managed to grab me. I have the GBA game, and the 3DS one - haven't really played either very much ^^;. This WiiU iteration, though. This is something else.

The game looks extremely good, you feel like you're going fast, there are plenty of fun characters and things to customize and it's exciting! The multiplayer seems amazingly well organised as well. I am trying to pace myself so that I won't OD on Mario Kart the day after launch, but it's difficult XD

We should all add each other and do JPH!P races~!

What are your favourite vehicle part combinations so far?

Yeah! My Nintendo ID is Shelletor if anyone wants to add me.

As far as vehicle combos, I haven't unlocked everything YET, but I've been favoring the Yoshi Bike or Sports Bike and slim wheels and the flower glider.

Star Fox Wii U Will Have You Piloting A Helicopter With GamePad-Based Controls

Shigeru Miyamoto recently sat down with TIME magazine to discuss his latest Wii U projects, including the newly leaked Star Fox game. Fans have clamoured for a new game to the series since the GameCube days, so it’s no surprise the game initially started out as a Wii title. However, since Nintendo has lacked the ability to utilise the GamePad fully in many of its first-party titles, rather rendering it as a map screen for the most part, Star Fox Wii U is set to change that.

Unfortunately, TIME magazine’s link to the article has been pulled, but we’ve gathered a few snippets from the interview which you can see below, including the control learning curve and the new helicopter vehicle within the game.

“I think Star Fox will be a game you spend a little bit of time getting used to the controls, but that once you do, then you’ll understand what’s fun about that experience. I don’t think it’ll take a lot of play time for people to get used to it. For most people, it’ll take maybe 30 minutes to an hour. So from that standpoint it’s not a game that’s particularly well-suited to displaying at a show like this, where you only have a short amount of time to play, so that’s why we held the event yesterday, to get everyone in to play for a longer period of time than they might normally.

“And then once you get used to the play style… I didn’t go into this detail the other night because it starts to get a little bit complicated, but once you get it, you’ll also be able to press a button to switch the view from one screen to the other. So you could play with the cockpit view on the TV and the fighter view down on the GamePad screen if you feel like that’s a better way to play.”

Miyamoto also mentioned how the new helicopter vehicle came into play: “With the helicopter, we’ve been thinking of the two-screen gameplay, and so that was one of the early ideas. One of the things we’re considering at this point is making the helicopter so you could have two pilots, two people playing together, and what that’ll allow is you could have one player piloting the helicopter, and another player who’s using another controller to control the robot.

“In the case of the Arwing spaceship, if you have two pilots, they’re most likely going to be sitting front-to-back, and you’ll have one piloting, the other able to look around. When you have someone piloting but someone else who can look around, what’s most beneficial to the person who’s looking around is the ability to look down below. In designing the Arwing we couldn’t quite think of a good way to have to redesign it so you’d have one player who could look down below. Thus we decided to create the helicopter.”

E-shop compatible with Suica cards in Japan (http://www.nintendolife.com/news/2014/07/suica_nfc_cards_to_finally_be_used_from_22nd_july_for_eshop_payments_in_japan)

Got hit with this piece of news today. Shiiiiit. This sounds dangerous. I love Suica (for those of you who don't know, Suica is a NFC payment card, you charge money to it and use it to pay for train rides, it can also be used in convenience stores and vending machines ... and now with your (Japanese) WiiU).

Every time Nintendo made it easier for me to buy games, I ended up buying more games! I am sort of glad I won't be able to use my Suica for this with my European WiiU, but it would be cool with a NFC payment option. I wonder if other countries will get this feature in the future.

Well my bro visited and I had a chance to play Wii U that he brought with him! Here are my GAME REVIEWS

Mario Kart 8 - Fun races, but unfortunately playing with my bro was not that much fun because he had already largely mastered the game while I was a noob, and unfortunately the NPCs seem to play according to how the better player is doing. So when I played solo I was placing 1st - 4th, but when I was playing with my bro I was placing 5th - 12th. It was depressing and I didn't have as much fun as I would have liked; I would have needed more time to learn the tracks and a week is not enough. Still, I recognize that it's a fun game, but it's more fair if the players are somewhat equal as well :P Oh and one great change from the previous Mario Kart game I played a lot (the one where you can play together on the same car and the other one just throws stuff out?); if you drive off the track you get back in action much faster. It's still annoying, but not as bad as it was.

Kirby's Adventures - The original Kirby's Adventures for NES was the very first game I bought with my own money as a wee lass. This game I felt captured the feeling of the original while adding more gameplay variety and being even more adorable than the original. As someone who had played a Kirby game before, it was so easy and smooth to just dive in. Lots of fun, fun to play with a friend and great how the game bit by bit becomes more challenging. I liked it :3

That Mario Cat Game - The 3D way of playing would have required much more time for me to get used to. We ended up just having one session for playing this cuz I wasn't having a great time failing jumps and generally having no idea wtf I was doing ha ha.

Wii U Karaoke (Joysound) - Some problems I had with this: for some reason the game disconnected after each song (my bro thought this was because of his Internet timing out for some reason, but anyways) and the game didn't count this as unused karaoke time, so I really didn't get an hour's worth karaoke time like the first free ticket to the game allows you to. Also, while the song selection has Jpop songs, the selection isn't that wide (from H!P there were 5 Momusu songs, 5 C-ute songs and 2 Aya Matsuura songs). The second problem was that the romaji over the Japanese was really small and difficult for me to read so I ended up trying to read the Japanese instead,  but ofc my Japanese isn't good enough, so basically I ended up failing the lyrics just about constantly. The good thing is that it gives that echo effect that puts you in karaoke mood. I think there's supposed to be a competitive element to how well you do, but to me the idea of that is against the idea of karaoke so I just didn't care about it and did whatever I wanted. LOL Anyway, if I owned a Wii U and was desperate for karaoke I might buy an hour ticket once a month or so if there was no disconnect problem, cuz it can be fun.

Tank! Tank! Tank! - This is a game that my brother randomly bought from a discount bin for 10 euros and it ended up being the game we played the most, almost obsessively. You are a tank and you shoot things. That's it. We played story mode to unlock things and managed to unlock maybe 3/4 of the missions. If you have the wrong tank for a certain mission it can get a bit frustrating LOL but still in a fun and "we just have to try ONCE MORE" type of way, it's really addictive LOL. I can't imagine playing it solo, but with a friend I think it's a lot of fun. The bad thing is probably that the support tank is always the same tank, while the main player can choose from a variety of unlocked tanks. But as the one who played a support tank every time... I really didn't mind. What you get from loot boxes varies based on the mission anyway, so you get to try a few different weapons as well :P

Anyway all in all I thought playing Wii U was a lot of fun and I even got in a bit of old school Wii Sports tennis practice >_>
