Yellow Light(CenterXNezumi OS)
« on: November 06, 2012, 05:42:55 PM »
Even though I was supposed to be studying, I was bored, I wanted to write, but had no direction. So I asked a friend who was still up late to suggest a theme. And she said “Yellow Light”. Total randomness. It’s probably a lame interpretation, but, meh.

Yellow Light

“Where are you?”

Center closed her cellphone after sending the text.

She leaned on the rooftop railing and surveyed the scene below. The Golden Eyebrows Gang was arguing with the Pink Gang. Something  about a ball connecting with their leaders skull.

The cardigan-clad girl smirked as the fight played out. They were sloppy and left too many openings that a more experienced and skilled fighter would have taken exploited.

Center leaned her chin on the railing and contemplated her participation of the fight. There was no doubt that he could easily trounce both parties. Why not? It wold be fun and serve to relieve some worry.

At that thought, she sighed. She turned around so that her back leaned on the railing, and looked to the sky. Yankee fights were part of the norm in Majijo, but what wasn’t, was the missing presence of Nezumi.

Center checked her phone again.

No replies. And it was already half an hour after their usual appointment.

They would meet up here, everyday, without fail. So what was important enough to keep the hooded girl from showing?

Pushing herself from the railing, she decided to search for Nezumi.

Wandering the hallways, Center barely acknowledged the crowd of girls that parted before her.

She peeked in classrooms, strode through all the floors, checked the courtyards, and even managed to get into a fight or two. Which she won with minimal difficulty of course.

But the fact remains that no matter where she looked, Nezumi was yet to be found.

‘Did she already leave? But still, it’s unlike her to not turn up.’

With that thought, Center decided to wait in the Rapappa clubroom. Once there, she found Team Fondue cleaning up their equipment.

“Ah! Center!” Kanburi exclaimed, everyone else froze, surprised by her presence.

“Didn’t you already leave with Nezumi?” asked Docchi.

Center shook her head.

“Have you seen her?” She asked.

“Not since this morning.” Replied Tsuri, she looked over at the others.

“What about you?” Each of them shook their heads in answer.

“ I see…” Center trailed off, worry flashed through her as she pondered Nezumi’s whereabouts.

“Well, if you don’t mind, we’ll be leaving now.” Toshima broke through her thoughts.

“Huh? Ah! Go ahead, no one’s stopping you.” Center waved them off.

“The Shitenou have already left, so you’ll be the only one here.” Kanburi said as she slung her bag over her shoulder.

“Ah.Wakatta. I’ll see you all tomorrow then.”

Center made way as Team Fondue filed out of the room, exchanging farewells. Lemon, who was last in line, rushed back into the room and placed something in Center’s hand.

“It’s pretty healthy and tastes really good. Be sure to try it okay?”

Center dumbly nodded her head, surprised.

“Uh…okay. Arigatou.”

“Don’t worry about it. I just want to share the greatness of lemons with everyone!” Her smile clearly reflected her love for the fruit.

“Lemon! We’re leaving without you!” Docchi’s voice filtered through the open doorway.

The girl with her favourite fruit for a namesake panicked.

“Ahhh!! Wait for me!” She ran out, and slammed the door behind her.

Center leaned back in her seat, a leather armchair set at the back of the room. She examined the canned drink in her hand and found it indeed, to be lemonade. She set it on the armrest and dialed a number.

The dial tone rang longer than usual, making Center frown.

A click sounded and she straightened in her seat.

“Nezumi! Wh-“

“Nezumi desu. If I’m not picking up then I’m either busy or couldn’t be bothered to take your call. Since you’re persistent, leave a message and I’ll reply if you’re worth my time.”

Center hung up. She stared at the phone in her hand and wryly noted Nezumi’s recorded message.

A voice echoed through the darkness.

She couldn’t make out what it was saying though.

It sounded familiar.

Nezumi?

“Center!  Oi!  Wake up already!” A hand gripped her shoulder.

Center jerked awake and sent a punch to the hand’s owner.

When her eyes finally focused, she was surprised to see Nezumi .

With Center’s fist caught just inches from her face.

“Ooops. Gomen, reflexes.”  Center lowered her fist and took in Nezumi’s state.

“You’re hurt!” Center shot out of her seat and gently held Nezumi by the shoulders.

“Who did this to you?! Is this why you were late? Why didn’t you tell me?”

Center frantically scanned her from head to toe, ignoring Nezumi’s surprised face. Nezumi slapped her hands away none too gently.

“Stop that! I’m fine. I’ll explain as soon as you calm down.”

Center relented with a sigh.

“Grab a chair and sit. You can tell me while I clean your wounds.”

Nezumi settled in a nearby chair while Center pulled out a first aid kit kept in the room. Her wounds weren’t particularly serious, but Center knew that things would get ugly if an infection happened.

As she busied herself with her task, Nezumi began her story.

“Sometime after lunch, an insider told me that Yabakune was planning something against Majijo’s Teppen.”

Center wrapped a bandage around Nezumi’s cut hand.

“So you decided to find out what it was.”

Nezumi nodded.

“Exactly, I managed to sneak in without being found. They were talking about an ambush sometime soon.”

“That’s it? A simple ambush?”

Nezumi rolled her eyes.

“What did you expect? The idiocy at Yabakune never changes.”

“You still haven’t told me why you’re hurt.”

Center frowned as she dabbed disinfectant at a cut on Nezumi’s cheek. It was amazing how even with their close proximity, she still managed to miss the blush on her patient’s face.

Nezumi pushed her hand away with a hiss.

“Careful! That hurt…”

“Hold still, I’m almost done.”

Despite Nezumi’s squirming, Center managed to apply the last band-aid. She sat back and examined Nezumi’s wounds once more, satisfied with her work.

“Well?” She asked.

“Well what?” Nezumi looked slightly confused.

“How did you get those wounds?” Nezumi looked away, embarrassed.

“I was still eavesdropping, when….”

“When what?” Center leaned forward, eager to find out.

“The phone rang….” Nezumi mumbled, still not looking Center’s way.

There was a pause of silence for a few seconds before it was shattered by laughter.

“I can’t believe that the great Nezumi forgot to shut her phone off while she was spying on enemy grounds!!”

Laughter bubbling up from her throat broke the sentence into pieces of unclear wheezes.

But Nezumi got the general idea. She smacked Center on the shoulder.

“Urusai! It was YOUR message! And then you started calling when I was fighting them off.”

The laughter suddenly stopped.

A tinge of sadness appeared in Center’s serious face.

“Gomen, Nezumi. You went there to protect me and also got hurt because of me.”

She looked at the ground, mad at herself for troubling Nezumi, for getting her hurt.

The hooded girl let out a puff of air in frustration.

“Baka.”

She flicked Center’s forehead, causing her to look up in surprise.

Nezumi’s face softened as she gently rubbed the sting out of that spot with her thumb.

“It was my fault for not telling you and for being careless.”

“Demo…”

Nezumi lowered her hand to caress Center’s cheek.

“There’s nothing else to it, they’re worse off than I am, and I got away. So drop it. Okay?”

Center held Nezumi’s hand against her cheek and nodded.

“Okay.”

She brought the hand to her mouth and kissed the inside.

Nezumi smiled.

Not long after, Center and Nezumi were walking home together.

Since it was already quite late when they left, their path was illuminated by street lamps.

It was quiet, and save for the occasional car passing by, they were alone. But they didn’t mind.

In fact, they welcomed it. A companionable silence in which only the two of them enjoyed.

No words were needed as they playfully swung their linked hands.

Only each other.

Center found herself staring at Nezumi.

‘The street lights are too yellow. They make Nezumi look gaunt and pallid.’

Her forehead creased as the light also outlined the bandages present.

“Doushita? You’re frowning again.” Nezumi was looking at her with concern laced in her eyes.

They stopped walking and faced each other properly.

Center affectionately brushed Nezumi’s bangs out of her eyes.

“I’m still mad that you’re hurt. They need to be taught a lesson. No one touches Majijo’s students, especially a member of Rapappa.”

Nezumi puffed out her cheeks.

“I already told you I beat most of them up.”

“They were also planning an ambush.” Center reminded.

“I know, that’s why I agree with you.” Center smirked, remembering how much she loved this devious side of Nezumi.

“Well, Vice-President? What’s your plan of action?”

“I’m glad you asked, President. You know what they say….the best defense is an offense.”

The streetlight hanging overhead cast dark shadows on her face.

But the evil smile that graced her lips was unmistakable.

“There she is!”

“Get her!”

A group of about fifty girls were on the chase.

Their prey entered a tunnel, desperate to get away.

“It’s a dead end!”

“She’s ours now.”

“Twenty of you, come with me! The rest of you guard outside, don’t let anyone interfere!” Their leader barked.

They rushed inside, eager to corner their target.

Not too far ahead, the hooded girl stopped in her tracks.

She had reached the end of the tunnel, there was nowhere else to run.

She spun around, the Yabakune girls blocked her only exit.

“Not so smart are you, Nezumi?” Their leader jeered.

Her posse laughed, confident that they have won.

“Center will have no choice but to listen to us once she hears we have her precious Vice-President.”

More insults and laughter were thrown around.

The noise resounded around them due to the enclosed space.

“Why run into a dead end anyway? Do you have a death wish?”

Nezumi smirked.

“More like a death sentence.”

“We heard about your ambush.” A new voice stated.

“Wha…” The Yabakune girls spun around.

“So we thought, why not plan one of our own? ”

There, proudly stood Center.

Unfazed and unafraid of the number of Yankees before her.

“You! How did you get past the others?!” The leader exclaimed.

“My Rapappa is taking care of them.”

The leader frantically looked back and forth between Nezumi and Center.

Her group was caught in between, stuck in a tunnel with no escape.

“So what? You’re still outnumbered.”

“And you’re outmatched.” Nezumi answered.

By some unspoken signal, she and Center rushed into the fray.

Later, Center and Nezumi were lazing by the riverbank, enjoying the sunset.

Cuts and bruises decorated their bodies, evidence of their previous battle.

Center leaned back on her elbows, enjoying the slight breeze that ruffled her hair.

She smirked as she remembered the damage that they had done.

The Yabakune girls couldn’t even move later. They never stood a chance.

Her gaze drifted from the panoramic view before her.

Unsurprisingly, she found herself staring at Nezumi once again.

She sat with her knees hugged to her chest, watching the sunset that Center was currently ignoring.

The light from the setting sun illuminated Nezumi’s frame and cast hypnotic shadows across her form.

To Center, this sight was even more beautiful than what Nezumi was currently pre-occupied with.

‘This definitely does her more justice than that ugly yellow light.’ Center thought.

“You’re staring at me again.” Nezumi stated, she raised an eyebrow in amusement.

Center sat up.

“I can’t help it. If it makes you feel better, you’re welcome to stare at me too.” She teased.

Nezumi rolled her eyes.

“Whatever.”

Despite that, Center was pleased when Nezumi leaned her head on her shoulder.
