Forget winmx, it's useless. The queues are massive. You join the queue at #100, then an hour later you're at #130.
Winny on the other hand is great. I had to install a Japanese win98 on a spare hard drive just so I could use it. The reason being that you could download a file on a non-Japanese win98 but the files download into an encrypted form, and when you unencrypt the file, if your win98 can't have Japanese filenames you're screwed.
Installing windows is awkward enough anyway, but it's much more difficult when all the install instructions are in Japanese - I can read hiragana, some katakana (I've not learnt them all yet) and a handful of kanji. Part way through it wanted me to type my name. It wouldnt accept anything I typed, so in desperation I typed Goto Maki (selecting the right kanji from the little dropdown menu thing) and it worked!
