yup. will try to buy at least a 1gig card first, so my ram will be 1,5gb for awhile, then will replace the 512 card with another 1gig :)

I probably won't change to vista immediately, I'll wait for a few months and ask around whether it's worth upgrading to (not just money-wise but performance-wise).

Cpu: AMD Athlon 64 3200+
Mb: Gigabyte GA-K8NF-9
Ram: 2x512mb 1GB PC3200 Patriot Memory
Videocard: Powercolor X800 GTO 256mb GDDR
Sound: Onboard with like 10 year old speakers
HD's: Western Digital 250GB sata, Maxtor 250GB sata and an old Maxtor 60GB IDE
Dvd-rw: Pioneer DL 16x dvd-rw drive
Case+psu: Antec Sonata II+Antec 450Watt SmartPower 2.0
Cooling: cpu: stock videocard: stock
Monitor: Some crappy 15" LCD
Keyboard+mouse Some cheap wireless logitech set

Had most of it for almost a year and a half. And bought the vid card when it went on sale for 90 bucks. I intended to game a little but ended up dling too much music and videos and have no space for any games. I bought the DL dvd-rw thinking media would get alot cheaper, but that shit is still way too expensive for me.

I plan on replacing the 60gb HD with maybe another 250gb or 300gb and adding a 4th 250 or 300gb hd later this year.

I might add another gb or maybe even 2gb of memory by the end of the year.

I noticed both my mobo and psu has 20+4pin power connectors. Would it be better to use the extra 4 pins or should I just stick to 20 pins like I have been doing?

I plan on convincing my parents for a new laptop for my 20th bday(actually it would be a 19/20th birthday as they didn't get me anything for either >_>) which just passed, I was looking for something no bigger than 14" which I can customize and I found this

HP Pavilion dv2000z customizable Notebook PC
                  RD140AV
  • – FREE Upgrade to Genuine Windows XP Media Center
  • – AMD Turion(TM) 64 X2 Dual-Core TL-56(1.8GHz/1MB)
  • – FREE Upgrade to 14.1" WXGA BrightView Widescreen
  • – NVIDIA(R) GeForce(R) Go 6150
  • – HP Imprint Finish + Microphone + Webcam
  • – 512MB DDR2 System Memory (1 Dimm)
  • – 80GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive
  • – FREE Upgrade: 8X DVD+/-R/RW w/Double Layer Support
  • – 802.11a/b/g WLAN & Bluetooth
  • – 6 Cell Lithium Ion Battery
  • – HP Mobile Remote Control
Which totals to be a little under a 1000USD. I plan on buying more memory later as it would save some money. It's mainly going to be used while I'm at school as I'm probably going to spend quite a bit of time there this semester. I was thinking either this or a macbook. What do you guys think?

There's no need to use the extra 4pins on the atx powerconnector if you have used the 20pin all the time and it's works. That laptop looks ok but I would look for models with Core 2 Duo cpu as it performs better than the Turions and consumes less power. You should also check out Lenovo's Thinkpad models like R60 or Z61. Thinkpad's have better build quality than HP or any other brand on the market (magnesium chassis for example) and they are highly reliable. Macbooks are good to if you are not afraid of using OS X. If buying a mac, 1GB of memory is good to have as 512MB isn't quite enough for OS X.

A Thinkpad Core 2 Duo R60 would exceed your budget.  A nicely configured one (T7200, 15", 128MB Radion X1400, 1GB, 40GB) goes for $1,400.

The HP isn't a bad deal for a Vista-capable laptop.  However:
 - 1 512 DIMM limits your total RAM to 1.5GB.  Might be better to get a single 1GB DIMM so you can later upgrade to 2GB.
 - Get the smallest cheapest HDD you can, and then replace it with a 120GB or 160GB drive with something cheap from Pricewatch.  You pay a hefty premium for getting a laptop with a factory-configured large drive.
 - I personally don't like BrightView screens.  Nice and shiny, but the reflections are annoying.

That being said, I'd prefer the low-end MacBook over the HP.  I like the black ones - they're harder to scratch.  However, only the top-end MacBooks come in black.

Well quality doesn't come cheap. You can pick cheaper laptops like Acer, HP or other brands but it just isn't the same as Lenovo/IBM.

got a question... I have a 2,5" harddisk in an external enclosure. lately if I even move it a bit when it's plugged in it acts as if I've plugged it off... then it say's "windows delayed write failed". is this because of the enclosure or is my harddisk broken? thx...

Have you checked that the HD is properly connected to the connectors inside the enclosure? It could be also that the enclosure is broken and the connectors doesn't make proper contact.

aaah! that's it! I opened the enclosure and the connector is loose from the contact.. I need to make it stick stronger... I'm not good with electronics, can I use super glue? or do I have to use that... what do you call it, solder? >_< maybe I better let someone who understands electronic circuit to look at it. Thank you!!

Solder would be the best option if you have to connect to metal's together and they need to be conductive. If you can't do the job yourself you could ask your local computer shop to do it for you. I'm pretty sure that they would do it for a small amount of money.

If it's a expensive aluminium enclosure the repairing would be a good idea but if it's a cheap plastic one then I'd just buy a new one.

I might get a new one, but I'll have them fix it first since this thing is still new so it's still under store warranty.

If it has warranty they won't fix it. You will just get a new one.

I should probably post my computer/s

One I'm on now is:
C2D e6600 (sometimes running at 3.4 when I wanna encode something faster otherwise it's stock)
Asus P5B (Vanilla)
1gig Corsair DDR2 800
XFX 7800GT 256mb
Audigy 2 zs
Random HDD's um 6 250's and 320's, some aren't plugged in all the time though.
Lian Li v2100b or something, it's big and black and yeah I've posted pics of it before hehe
Monitor is Dell 24" LCD but for games I go back to a 17" Trinitron cause page tearing is unbairable in games on the 24"

Other one which is handling torrents and some encoding at another location is:
Athlon X2 4200 @2.4 (wee~ such a huge oc :D *note sarcasm)
1gig generic DDR
Gigabyte board, with nforce 430 chipset (onboard video)
A couple of hdd's

My Spec :

P4 1.8 Ghz with 512k L2 Cache, AGP support only
1024 MB DDR Ram PC 3200
VGA Card : Ge Force FX 6600 256 MB AGP Slot
Monitor : 14" (1024 x 768)
160 GB ATA Seagate 7200 Rpm
Printer : Canon BJP 165 (If i don get wrong)
ASUS P4SGX support 4x slot AGP, Chipset I268 (if i don get wrong about this)
Keyboard + Mouse : Logitech (Black)

My only weakness is on Processor & MoBo, my moBo only allow me to running memory up to PC 2700, as for AGP slot it is only allow me to running 4x *sigh* what a frustration that was

Your cpu isn't fast enough for your videocard but if you wan't to upgrade your cpu you'd have to buy new mobo.
