Sonic the Hedgehog (ソニック・ザ・ヘッジホッグ?), trademarked Sonic The Hedgehog, is a video game character and the protagonist of the eponymous video game series of the same name released by Sega, as well as in numerous spin-off comics, cartoons and books. The first game in the franchise was released on June 23, 1991, in order to provide Sega with a mascot to rival Nintendo's flagship character Mario (see 1991 in video gaming). Since then, Sonic has become one of the world's best-known video game characters, with his series having sold 50 million copies.

The OTHER most legendary video game character of all time totally deserves a thread! So what's your favorite Sonic game?

When I was like 6 - 10 years old, I had the old SEGA Mega Drive console... and played Sonic The Hedgehog on it! That was my first Sonic game ever! But I lost every time, because I didn't get the gameplay... My older sister and my uncle was playing this game like a freak! :shocked

There was this one boss that was SO EFFING hard to beat. It was this crab thing with huge pincers at the bottom of this ramp, and I think it shot out bombs? Anyway, freaking hard to beat. Got frustrated and hardly played that shit. XD

My favorite game is Sonic Adventure because of the open world gameplay. Did anyone else love the chao garden? lol, my favorite chao was the brown one, which I would also call the chocolate one.

I heard that Sonic DX for Gamecube was like Sonic Adventure for DC. Anyone have DX (director's cut)? Does it have most of the same things? Including the chaos? Because I would have gotten DX a long time ago if i had known, and Im ready to get it now and play on the wii.

When I was young I never got why this was supposed to be competition for Mario. In my eyes the mario games were superior on every level, especially game play. With the sonic games, you race through a level, you never spot enemies because you're going so fast.. Sonic is supposed to be fast, but if you lose speed you can't even make it up a small hill.

It's a shame that Sega ran the franchise into the ground with recent titles of questionable quality. Call me a traditionalist but I think it was a bad idea to give him that cheezy voice as well.

At the insistence of my nephew I tried to get past the more difficult stages for him in Sonic and the Secret Rings. Worst Sonic game I've played. There are moments that are good, the sense of speed is really well done in some cases, but more often than not you're colliding into something, or dealing with a lock on system that's screwy at best. And the boss battles! Die once and you have to go back to the beginning and do it all over again, and as mentioned, the system makes it harder than it should. Sonic's meant to be about uninterrupted speed so to regularly have obstacles thrown in your way that slow you down to a halt, makes it the worst feeling.

There's a new 2D HD Sonic game in the works (http://gonintendo.com/viewstory.php?id=95966). Wouldn't hold my breath, they'll add some gimmick to it that goes against what should make Sonic great.

Now they're trying too hard to release more games and to me it's gonna kill him. Cause his last big game was crap not mention stupid to add another hedgehog to the mix. Also his "storybook series" games like Sonic and the Secret Rings and Sonic and the Black Knight were just god awful. His games will never be as good as his old games on the genesis they were addicting, fun, and had badass music.

The music! A classic song such as the BGM for Green Hill Zone is now replaced in modern games with cheesy rock that would be more suitable for a video montage of surfboarding.

But fuck, homie is a huge Sonic Fan like Asmo there, he bumps tracks in his car but we been playing BioWare's Sonic Chronicles and shit is CRAAAAAAAAAAAAAZY

The next one to be released is Crazy Taxi, the others haven't been annouced yet, but Virtual On is already out for a year and SF3:3rd Strike is upcoming too~!

And yeah I've been playing it all morning, I can't believe people are giving it bad reviews!!! (IGN gave it 3.5/10)
SPEED HIGHWAY!!! I'M RUNNING DOWN THE SIDE OF A BUILDING!!!!

Maybe I'm just really good at it, but I see no fault with the controls, the camera is fine once you're used to it and what....?! WHAT!? people are actually criticising the MUSIC!? excuse me!? Like, have you played speed highway? red mountain? THIS GAME HAS THE THEME OF BIG THE CAT IN IT. HOW CAN IT HAVE BAD MUSIC!?

It uses the Gamecube graphics, so it both looks better and worse than the Dreamcast version at the same time, lol.
Chao are using the GC system I think, so you can level up their stats just with the animals since there's no VMU, and the black market is already there, I think you buy stuff with rings but I haven't been in yet, lol.

The achievements will take a long while too! one of them is for all 130 emblems, haha.

Yeh I'm gonna get it, my nephew's gonna love it too, I can tell. Play as Sonic, Knuckles and a robot?! He'll flip out :lol: Might just play it with him when he comes to visit. :D

I just finished Sonic, Tails, and Knuckles. I like listening to Tails ending theme. He has grown and doesn't need Sonic anymore.

I'm burned out on it at the moment but I guess that happens to you when you clear them all in a day. I'm not a marathon gamer by any means, a game has to be at a pretty good point or if I feel really good if I play it for more than half an hour, so to play 7hrs worth of the same game today just killed me lol. It's a shorter game than I remembered, kinda made me wonder why everyone hated on Big's gameplay when he only has 4 stages. The bosses were way easier than I remembered too. Super Sonic's in particular, was one I remembered being a little more epic than what it was, and dare I say it, the later sonic games I've played actually do them better. Those mini bosses against other characters like Knuckles and Gamma were pretty rubbish though, way too easy.

But whatever, I still had a good time. Lots of nostalgia kicking in when songs popped up or certain gameplay sequences revealed themselves again. And my nephew loved it, which was the most important thing to me. He got super excited when he learned he could play as Knuckles and I could hear him quietly repeat lines Sonic said during cutscenes. Bless him :wub:

They also made the fantastic Sonic Advance series and Sonic on NGPC!

They did a great job of reviving SF, so I'm confident they can do the same here :)

I dunno, I never really held true to the idea that all recent efforts have been awful Sonic games. Sonic 4 was pretty good. Sonic Colours is the best it has been in some time. This looks to have a combination of both, so I'm pretty happy. But then, I'm not enough of a diehard Sonic fan to complain about things like the physics of Sonic 4, or how his running animation looks weird.

I gotta make a game for my final project in my game development class. We use a program called Game Maker. Don't know the details, but I was thinking of naming it "Tails Adventure." XD

At this point I think old school Sonic's physics are kinda messed up, even though they're closer to the original's than Sonic 4's.

What was the outrage about Sonic 4 having a homing attack anyway? lol

People have been complaining for years that newer Sonic games aren't as fast as Sonic 2 was in the industrial zone, not only is classic sonic mode just as fast as that, modern sonic is FASTERRRRR omg it's so much fun going so fast, and really exciting, I want this game so baddddd

It's more of a surprise gift for my nephew, but as he is too young for a 360 it means I'll hold onto it and he can play it anytime he's down, which is usually once a week. He'll freak out when I show him :lol: Of course, I've been playing it and it's pretty cool! Early days yet but I hear the campaign is pretty short anyway so I'm not gonna rush through it. I got 3 achievements for clearing the first stage as 2D Sonic (Clear Act 1, Clear Act 1 without getting hit, get S Rank) so that was good!

And just when you figure it might never happen, SEGA have announced that Sonic 4 : Episode 2 will be out this year:

Post by: DHG on January 14, 2012, 10:52:16 AM: Sonic to me has been going downhill after Sonic Adventure. Granted his handheld releases were decent. I'm glad I played Sonic Generations. That was an awesome game and I hope they take what they did for this game and use it for future titles.

It's a cool game too! Personally I prefer modern Sonic's levels compared to the others cause they go by at such a high speed. Finding all the unlockables are cool and there seems to be a lot of challenges that are diverse in interesting ways that change up the gameplay some. Also nice to have those stages and unlockable music tracks that really kick that nostalgia. Super impressed by it.

Post by: Tuffty on April 22, 2012, 09:27:36 PM: I feel like I have to say this, because I've been having frustrations with it lately in cleaning up some achievements, but even if I wasn't going for that, I still feel comfortable in saying that the final boss in Sonic Generations could possibly be the worst boss fight I've ever played. It's so unbelievably frustrating for you to gain all that distance to the bad guy but then get knocked back quite a way for you to have to regain that distance. Plus you're on a timer because the number of rings you have count down all the while. Plus the controls are just terrible, you never ever feel like you're in control. On top of it all the music's terrible and you play it hearing nothing but this all the while.

So even if it's annoying, it sounds true to the series :D
