Stolen AKB48 stage costume appears in
online auction; police investigating
A stage costume worn by Yuki Kashiwagi, a member of the all-girl pop group AKB48, was stolen from storage at the group's production company and put up for sale online, it has been learned.
The company, AKS, has submitted a theft report to police, and the Metropolitan Police Department's youth crime division is investigating.
According to the division, an AKS employee noticed in November last year that the costume had appeared in an online auction. The employee won the auction with a 300,000 yen bid, and confirmed that the costume was genuine. The costume had been put up for auction by a 17-year-old high school student in Shiga Prefecture, who claimed that he had purchased it over the Internet.
"I put it on sale without knowing it was stolen," the teenager was quoted as saying. Investigators are now attempting to trace how the costume came to be in the boy's possession."
