The Elder Scrolls (abbreviated as TES) is a role-playing video game series developed by Bethesda Game Studios and published by Bethesda Softworks.

The Elder Scrolls games can be safely categorized as role-playing games, although they do include elements taken from action and adventure games. In Arena, as in many RPGs, players advance by killing monsters (and thereby gaining experience points) until a preset value is met, whereupon they level-up. However, in Daggerfall, Morrowind, and Oblivion, the series took a skill-based approach to character advancement. Players develop their characters' skills by applying them, and only level-up when a certain set of skills have been developed. The flexibility of the games' engines has facilitated the release of game extensions (or mods) through The Elder Scrolls Construction Set.

The world of the Elder Scrolls is known for its attention to detail, attempted realism, and the vast number of names, dates, and places that constitute its history and the interconnected structure of its various societies, cultures, and religions. There is no one compilation of all information pertaining to the Elder Scrolls world, and, within the games, historical references are often vague or unclear. Players are encouraged to draw their own conclusions about situations and events for which the records are sparse, contradictory, or incomplete.

I've a confession to make, I've played both Morrowind and Oblivion but I've never finished them. But you know, considering I spent 100+ hours on each, I think it's safe to say that I got a lot out of both games even without finishing the main story.

It's safe to say that Elder Scrolls V : Skyrim is one of this year's most anticipated games. And rightly so, it's been a while since a new Elder Scrolls game and the ones that have come before i.e. Morrowind and Oblivion have been stunning games in concept and execution. I know both have had their issues with technical bugs and what have you, but I can forgive that if the games are ambitious and it's mostly executed well. The cool thing is that you can mess about in these worlds, do your own thing and engage in side quests and still have a blast. I know I did. I'll maybe share some of my experiences later but for now, here's a breakdown of the games that I've played:

The Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind

The Elder Scrolls III : Morrowind Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Cr3TCWPlDrw#)

Looking back now, I had some great moments with Morrowind. It's probably the glitchiest game I've played, the console locked up a couple of times, but I'm so glad I tried it because it's one of the most atmospheric and daunting game environments ever in terms of scope and scale. It wasn't your LOTR type fare either, the world really did feel quite alien, like the Daedric ruins, the Ashlander camps, the fishing village of Gnaar Mok, they were all different and interesting to explore. And when I was out there carving my own destiny, it had a rousing soundtrack to keep you going, such as the song you can hear in the trailer above. Also, fuck cliff racers.

The Elder Scrolls IV : Oblivion

Elder Scrolls IV: Game of The Year OFFICIAL Trailer (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2XChSf2Ywc4#)

Oblivion was more of a LOTR knock off than anything and probably was...'dumbed down' from what came before in Oblivion, but it didn't take away from the experience for me as it made a lot of other necessary and beneficial improvements to make it a better gameplay experience. It was one of the first games I had for the 360, and probably the best looking one I had. Even now I'm still in awe at the sunset, or the stars in the sky.

Due in November, I am so excited for this to come out. The previews have sounded amazing and this will be one of the few day one purchases I've made in my life. Bring it on.

Yea Elder Scrolls thread! Now I have a place to put any hyper ramblings whenever new Skyrim trailers or info are shown! I feel kinda bad because I'm finding it hard for me to get excited for any other games this year because I'm so excited for TES: 5. :(

I was just listening to the Oblivion 5th anniversary show on the Bethesda podcast. Extremely fascinating stuff on the game development and history of the series.  :twothumbs

I'm in the same boat as you Tuffty played em for god knows how long but never beat them (I always wanted to get rid of those annoying Oblivion gates but always got side tracked :sweatdrop:). Even watched my cousin play Daggerfall quite a bit.

Ah but the Oblivion gates got kinda dull. First time round was pretty awesome, but when you're asked to do the same thing for another 9 or so times, each using the same environments and doing the same thing and they become compulsory to progressing further in the story, then I kinda lost interest. I wanted to do more shit for the Fighter's Guild! Much more important

Skyrim sounds epic. This preview is the best I've read (http://www.eurogamer.net/articles/2011-04-18-the-elder-scrolls-v-skyrim-preview) The thing I keep reading about is that at some point in the story you're going to have to ascend a mountain with 7000 steps in order to meet with a council. Hearing stuff like that just gets me all kinds of excited.

I wish Morrowind was playable on the 360. Some modders applied some graphical updates to it on the PC and it looks pretty good!

I started a new Oblivion character to mess around with before Skyrim comes out. Female Breton, thief birthsign. Gonna try to be 100% magic and all super athletic jumping at people blasting them with electricity and stuff. And I'm determined to do the main story first thing off the bat.

I was listening to a podcast one of the Elder Scrolls devs was on and they played this at the end out of nowhere. I was all " :O?!? wha.. what was that song!?" and then I replayed it 100 times or so.

I guess it's some of the ambient music from Skyrim.   :PP

A few new tidbits of information on The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have sneaked out of Bethesda HQ, including news that the game contains 60,000 lines of voiced dialogue.

According to PC Gamer, the long-awaited RPG sequel will feature unlimited dragons that can attack at random as you explore the game world.

Wounded dragons will apparently be unable to fly, offering an opportunity to engage them on the ground, potentially giving you the upper hand.

Slaying dragons earns you special abilities called dragon shouts. A few examples offered include power-ups that give you fire breath, a lightning strike, the ability to slow down time or a speed boost.

The game's guard system is reportedly getting an overhaul. In contrast to previous games in the series, if you commit a crime in one region guards in a neighbouring area won't automatically be aware of it and collar you on sight.

Bethesda has also confirmed that horses will feature in the game, with improved handling promised over Oblivion. You'll also be able to hop in a carriage for speedy travel between regions or automatically skip to places you've already discovered.

Oblivion's Dark Brotherhood assassin's guild return, along with a thieves guild, a fighter's guild and a mage's guild.

Finally, Bethesda has promised a much larger voice cast has been signed up to deliver that whopping script than worked on Oblivion.

Infinite dragons that can attack randomly? I hope they don't turn out like cliff racers in Morrowind.

When it comes time to make a sequel to a game that has six mutually contradictory endings*, how do you decide which one is the "real" ending?

A Report Compiled By Ulvius Tero, Blades Archivist

Secret: For Your Eyes Only

Let me offer my congratulations to Your Lordship for your recent appointment as ambassador to the Court of Wayrest.

Your Lordship asked me for a review of existing Blades accounts from 3E 417 concerning 'The Warp in the West', and for a summary of the current state of affairs there.

Since Your Lordship was in Black Marsh serving in the staff of Admiral Sosorius at the time, you probably know of these events only from Imperial proclamations and Chapel declarations, which identify this period as the 'Miracle of Peace'. During the 'Miracle of Peace', according to official accounts, the formerly war-wracked Iliac Bay region was transformed overnight from a patchwork of squabbling duchies and petty kingdoms into the peaceful modern counties of Hammerfell, Sentinel, Wayrest, and Orsinium. The 'Miracle of Peace', also known as the 'The Warp in the West', is celebrated as the product of the miraculous interventions of Stendarr, Mara, and Akatosh to transform this troublesome region into peaceful, well-governed Imperial counties. The catastrophic destruction of landscape and property and the large loss of life attending upon this miracle is understood to have been 'tragic, and beyond mortal comprehension.'

In as much as this account confirms and validates the current borders of these counties, and identifies the rulers and boundaries of these counties as 'ordained by the Nine', the 'Miracle of Peace' serves Imperial objectives of peaceful consolidation of ancient petty states and sovereigns into manageable Imperial jurisdictions. The other remarkable features of these events -- mass disappearances, armies mysteriously transported hundreds of miles or completely annihilated, titanic storms and celestial phenomena, apparent local discontinuities of time -- fit comfortably into the notion that these events are part of a vast, mysterious divine intervention.

However, this is only the public account of these events, and, as you may suspect, it conflicts with many other accounts. In short, while this explanation suits Imperial policy, it has little historical validity.

Your Lordship should know that the Blades have concluded there is no plausible historical account of these events, and despairs that a plausible historical account shall ever be produced. The Blades have concluded that a 'miracle' occurred, insofar as the events are inexplicable, but the Blades strongly doubt the miracle was of divine origin.

There is good reason to believe that the ruling families of the four modern Iliac Bay counties had forewarning of the event. There is also some evidence that some of these ruling families may have been directly or indirectly responsible for the event. We do not know the exact sequence of actions that produced the event, although we are confident that the 'Totem' artifact was involved, and that a Blades agent was involved in employing that artifact. We unfortunately lost contact with that agent immediately after the event; his report might have gone some way to resolving the contradictory and paradoxical accounts of the event.

The Blades have on file few reports from agents dating from the "Warp in the West" period. Most of our agents were lost in the initial dislocations, and others were lost in the confusion after the event. I present a few of these reports to give you a general sense of their limitations, including the report of your diplomatic predecessor, Lord Strale. You will have had access to other private and rumored accounts of the period. I believe you will agree that these documents raise more questions than they answer.

The Report of Hammerfell Agent 'Briarbird'

'I was on assignment in the Alik'r Desert, a few miles south of Bergama on the 9th of Frostfall. I was encamped, as it was still early morning, when I felt the ground shake so violently, I was thrown to the ground. Dazed, I was aware of a great roar of a sandstorm, which alarmed me, as I had been on a high dune and had seen nothing like that on the horizon. It was on me before I was even on my knees, burying me and my camp.

When I crawled my way out of the sand, I realized that I must make haste and get to Bergama as soon as possible, as all my food and water had been swept away. The sun was just rising as I began, like I said. When I reached Bergama, it was nightfall. The town was in chaos, filled with the soldiers of Sentinel. The Lord of Bergama's fortress was in ruins.

There had been an attack, but no one had seen it, only the invasion that followed it. The soldiers of Queen Akorithi of Sentinel refused to be interviewed about how they had accomplished this sneak attack, but I came to learn that the whole of northern Hammerfell now belonged to them. Even stranger, I discovered that my walk from sunrise to sundown had not taken me not one day, but two. It was now the 11th day of the month, not the 10th. I had lost a day somewhere, and so apparently had everyone else... except Akorithi's soldiers, who somehow were aware of the correct date.

I since have concluded that they had received advance warning, and so were better prepared to deal with the strange confusion of time and dates associated with the Warp.'

The Report of High Rock Agent 'Graylady'

'I was, at the time of the Warp, undercover as a witch in the Skeffington Coven of Phyrgias, in central High Rock. In order to give my report, I had volunteered for an expedition to gather supplies, which would allow me the freedom to reach my contact in Camlorn. I was traveling north-east along the foothills of the Wrothgarian Mountains, on the 9th of Frostfall, when I felt a great heat behind me, like a fire. I turned, but I regret to say I cannot tell you what I saw. The healers tell me my eyes were burned out of my sockets.

I think I must have fallen into a state of semi-consciousness, for I distinctly remember falling as the ground seemed to give way beneath me. Then there was a series of explosions in the distance, to the south, and I heard high whistling noises that were getting louder, coming closer. I had my shield with me, and fortunately anticipated that volleys of some sort were falling from the sky. Though I could not see them, I could hear them coming from a distance away, and was able to use my shield to block them from striking me.

The assault stopped suddenly, and I could smell smoke. I learned later that most of the forest of Ykalon and Phygias had caught fire, in an inferno that started further south in Daenia and the Ilessan Hills. Fortunately, I kept my bearings, and moved north, finally reaching a temple in the wilderness where my wounds were healed, as well as they could be.

It was there I learned that there had been a three-way clash between Daggerfall, Wayrest, and Orsinium not far from where I had been, and that the land midway between their kingdoms had been decimated.'

The Report of Ambassador Lord Naigon Strale

'His Imperial Majesty had sent me on a delicate errand, the details of which I cannot convey in this unsecure report, but my official capacity was to be the Emperor's ambassador to the court of Wayrest. From there, I was to meet with an old friend, Lady Brisienna, who was already in the vicinity. Forgoing any attempt at stealth, I was on an Imperial barge, sailing westward on the Bjoulsae, the morning of the 9th of Frostfall. I remember it was a slightly chilly day, but the sky was very blue.

'We had just passed the delightful riverside village of Candlemass when the captain sounded the alarum. There, in front of us, was a colossal wall of water, at least thirty feet high. It smashed our barge to splinters before any of us had a chance to react. I woke up on the shore, having been rescued by one of my servants who had miraculously not lost consciousness. He and I and one other man were the only survivors.

I thought at first that it was suspiciously similar to what happened to another agent of ours in High Rock but a short time before, where a freak storm had shipwrecked him in the Iliac Bay near Privateer's Hold. Furious and determined to see if similar forces were at work, I began a quick march to Wayrest.

The march, however, was not so terribly quick. The villages all along the Bjoulsae were on fire, and battles raged between the orcs of Orsinium and the soldiers of King Eadwyre in the formerly independent principality of Gauvadon, just east of Wayrest. I am an accomplished mage, and quite able to defend myself, but it took the better part of a week to make it those few miles to Wayrest.

King Eadwyre and his queen Barenziah were celebrating their great victories when I arrived. By then, I had gathered the barest facts of the matter, that simultaneously there were seven great battles in the Iliac Bay, and no one could describe them at all, only their bloodsoaked aftermath.

To summarize: on the 9th of Frostfall, there had been forty-four independent kingdoms, counties, baronies, and dukedoms surrounding the Iliac Bay, if one includes the unconquered territories of the Wrothgarian Mountains, the Dragontail Mountains, the High Rock Sea Coast, the Isle of Balfiera, and the Alik'r Desert. On the 11th of Frostfall, there were but four - Daggerfall, Sentinel, Wayrest, and Orsinium - and all the points where they met lay in ruins, as the armies continued to do battle.

I was determined to find the truth from the King, even if I had to be a most undiplomatic diplomat to do it.

Eadwyre, though a generally jovial sort, had blustered, saying he did not want to give out military secrets. The Queen, ever calm with those unreadable red eyes of hers, told me, 'We do not know.'

I think it is safe to assume that Barenziah did not tell me everything, but the facts of her story - which I later verified after pointed interviews in Daggerfall, Sentinel, and Orsinium - was that they had learned that a certain powerful, ancient weapon was going to be activated. I shan't give the name of it here. Out of fear that it would be used against Wayrest, the King had attempted to buy it from the young adventurer who had discovered its wherebouts. Eadwyre believed, as it turns out quite rightly, that other powers in the Bay had also attempted to win ownership of this device.

What happened then, as Barenziah said, 'We do not know.'

The morning of the 9th and the morning of the 11th somehow merged through some sort of Warp in the West, and Wayrest found themselves at war. Their land had expanded three-fold, but they were under attack by Daggerfall to the west, Orsinium to the east, and Sentinel to the south. There had been no time to understand what had happened, the King said. They had simply reacted, sending their armies to defend their lands against these enemies whose kingdoms had also gained great territorial advantage.

The battles continue on, now months later, as I return to the Imperial City to make my report. What more do I have to say? They are bloody, violent clashes, as is always the case with modern warfare, but I have been to the blackened, desolate no-man's land between the four remaining kingdoms. No mortal army caused that devastation.

I can say that the force that shook the Iliac Bay on the 10th of Frostfall 3E 417 was infinitesimally greater than the power these mighty kingdoms are wielding today.

I can say that there were other strange events on that day which kept the kingdoms from breaking free of the Empire, and accomplished likely more besides.

And I can say there is nothing left of it - this power, this weapon - in the Bay. The Warp that it created swallowed it up.'

Current Political Affairs in the Iliac Bay

Almost twenty years have passed, and the region, though transformed, has stabilized. There are no more disputed territories, and the kingdoms of Daggerfall, Wayrest, Sentinel, and Orsinium hold their new borders in relative peace.

Wayrest spreads across the eastern coast of the Bay, stretching from the land formerly called Anticlere to half of Gauvadon. Eadwyre has passed on to his ancestors, leaving his kingdom in the hands of his daughter, Elysana, who has two children by her royal consort, and seems likely to hold her father's lands. Your Lordship may also choose to communicate directly with King Helseth and Queen Barenziah in Mournhold. Their primary preoccupations are, of course, with Morrowind's affairs, but they may still have useful observations upon Wayrest's ruling families and political environment that may aid you in your understanding of the court of Queen Elysana.

King Gortwog of Orsinium controls much of the Wrothgarian Mountains as well as the profitable rivercoast of the Bjoulsae. He persists in his demands that Orsinium be recognized as an Imperial province separate from High Rock. The Elder Council treats Gortwog as a recognized king, and collects taxes directly from Orsinium, but officially Orsinium remains a county of High Rock, though technically it spans both the provinces of High Rock and Hammerfell.

Sentinel has gained the most land, sprawling across the entire southern Iliac Bay from Abibon-Gora, beyond the Dragontail Mountains, to the edge of Mournoth, Orsinium's territory. Queen Akorithi at her death left her enormous kingdom to her only surviving son, Lhotun, who is now surely one of the most powerful kings in Tamriel.

Daggerfall is still ruled by the Breton King Gothryd and the Redguard Queen Aubk-I. Their land now encompasses all of western High Rock, from the border they share with Wayrest at Anticlere to the east, to Ykalon to the north. They have four children now, and are much beloved in their realm.

If there are other repercussions of the mysterious Warp in the West, they have not yet come to our attention in the course of twenty years of observation.

A warp in the space time continuum means that all the endings happened! That was easy.

*One of which is impossible to reach, because that's just how Daggerfall rolls.

If you have a copy of Oblivion for the PC you may be interested in a mod that's coming out for it later this year. Entirely free, it's almost like a whole new game, with new areas, new mechanics and enemy models and is canonically relevant within the Elder Scrolls timeline (which you know, is cool if you follow it that heavily. Not me XD)

Details of the Collectors Edition have been announced and....well....

Quote
Details of a predictably lavish Collector's Edition of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim have just been issued by publisher Bethesda.

Priced at a wallet-busting £129.99, the set includes the following swag on top of the rabidly-anticipated RPG sequel itself:

Alduin Statue - Created in conjunction with the IP Factory, this collector's only statue stands 12" tall and is made of high quality PVC. Modeled from actual in-game 3D digital files, it showcases Alduin, the World Eater. He stands perched atop one the game's many dragon walls that teach the player the lethal language of dragons.
'The Art of Skyrim' Official Art Book - Featuring over 200 pages of striking, full-color illustrations, sketches and models, this stunning 9 3/8" x 12 1/8" coffee table book showcases the characters, creatures, environments, and weaponry of Skyrim. With a foreword by game director Todd Howard and commentary from Bethesda Game Studios artists, readers will be guided through the game's iconic visual style.
'The Making of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim' DVD - This documentary DVD contains exclusive, behind-the-scenes footage, including interviews with the Bethesda Game Studios team as they take you from concept to creation and provide insights into the story, gameplay, setting, legacy of the Elder Scrolls franchise, and much more.

It's available for pre-order now, ahead of the game's 11th November release date.

"We always say that we make the games we want to play. We can also say we create the collector's editions we'd want to own," commented Bethesda marketing VP Pete Hines. "We all want one of these!"

You're not going to see me pay £129.99 for that.

I might have said it before but all I care about as far as extras that come with games is a good in depth making of. Like Metal Gear Solid 2: The Document or the ones that come with God of War games. A long behind the scenes, see deleted levels, developer cometary, design documents, let you mess around in the 3D environments and character models and what not. That and nice packaging and a soundtrack.

You would have to pay me to take any other extra junk like statues or art books that I would probably throw away after a couple months anyways. XD I sure as heck am not paying A HUNDRED AND FREAKING FIFTY US DOLLARS. At least do something like Hallo Reach where you have a collector’s edition in between the regular and the uber. That had a really authentic package and journal and stuff (ugh I'm getting the urge to toss out all the crap that came with it now and put the disk in the good old cd binder). I normally wouldn't have even gotten that but I bought it a few weeks after release and it was the same price as the regular edition. :P

I finally beat the main quest in Oblivion.   I actually thought the end was pretty awesome, maybe it's just because I heard how terrible it was all these years. Put 135 hours into the play through so far, still haven't done the fighters guild and probably a lot of other stuff. My character is pretty God like now that I know how to level up right and got some useful items like the skeleton key, Goldbrand ect.

And it is beautiful.

So I have Skyrim. You should too. Let me describe what I did in the space of 2hrs (this is after the tutorial part). I went to Riverwood and I crafted some stuff with the smith. Smithing looks definately more streamlined, I can see myself getting into it and forging my own weapons. Which means I have to go out and collect materials for it? (As if this game wasn't addictive enough). But then before I even went into an inn to maybe rest up and explore the town some more I stumbled into a conversation where a shop keeper said how thieves broke into his shop and stole an item. I said I'd get it back and off I went, resting be damned. What I didn't realise is that it would lead me through a dungeon that took me an hour to get through. It's the same dungeon you might have seen in the preview clips but it's just as involving. What was a simple attack on bandits escalated into battling undead warriors the deeper I was led into the cave. I won't spoil the rest but it was wonderful to explore. Collected some sweet loot, I have 3 enchanted weapons already.

When I emerged out of the dungeon, it was out overlooking a lake, the sun peaking through the clouds and the music kicked in. I just sat back, took it all in, and called it a night. That's 2 hours! With only one dungeon! One sidequest! I looked at the map and it's fucking enormous. Love it. Goodbye social life.

How to steal in Skyrim (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rt5aUdijAN8#)

^ THAT'S HILARIOUS!!!

I've been wanting to check out one of the Elder Scrolls eventually, but I don't think my comp could handle both Lotro + one of these now. Let alone Skyrim LOL

Speaking of hilarious, I only hope I do something quite as awesome as this in my playthrough

Skyrim Is a Great Game - Giant Bomb Quick Look clip (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=sTgUm8VEWiU#ws)

For those playing, what's gonna be your playstyle? What race did you choose? What's his/her name? I was struggling with a name until I put my own in a Game Of Thrones name generator. So my character is known as Timeon Waters. A name to strike fear into the hearts of men wouldn't you agree? XD I sorta want my guy to be a Jaime Lannister type character so I'm focusing on a melee driven, sword and shield combo kinda guy. Don't recall Jaime being able to summon fire out of his hands (maybe he does, I haven't read all the books yet XD) but I want to be able to do that for my character too, so kinda like a battlemage. Though I want to dabble in all skillsets so lockpicking, sneaking, smithing, I want to do it all! Also in the Jaime Lannister similarity, I chose the Imperial race and I didn't realise that one of that race's perks was to find more gold in chests and stuff

I'm playing as a female Breton named Imogen. I've mostly been using spells. I was using fire and conjure, but recently I've replaced the conjure with a dagger and have been trying to get stealth kills.

Playing a Nordic guy.

Never played Elder Scrolls (or really any of this type of quests) before, so had a hard time to get thru the first part
I was looking for a way to cut my bound hands but instead first had to follow the guy to the keep where he cuts them loose.
Was somewaht frustrating if you have no idea how the games wants itself to be played, but I'm getting the hang of it.

Didn't die or get eaten or locked up the in the first part... time to stroll around.

I'm playing a female wood elf called Raine, that dual swords and loots everything. But always chooses the honourable option and never steals. just like every other rpg. :P
I haven't played any Elder Scrolls games, but since it's just Fallout 3 with swords+magic-pipboy I feel right at home.

Recently just switched my companion/follower. Most of the time, I was with that Unbroken woman from Whiterun. WTH, she had better armor than me...
Changed to a retired adventurer wife in someplace called Blackforge or somethingorother (it's in the east, and had a mine nearby). She reminded me of HG Wells in Warehouse 13, so I had to switch her in.

Anyways. Level 6 now, and started studying magic at the College of Winterhold. Cos I need to summon skeletons! XD

I'm up to lvl 10 now and I've started enchanting a few items and making potions. I've made a few pretty handy ones already. I bought a house in Whiterun, but I can't furnish it. The guide said to talk to the ward, but he doens't have that option. Anyone know what to do?

Holy crap this game is amazing! o_o

I went with a female Nord (skyrim is the land of the Nords) named her Saga. I'm level 17 atm, been focusing on one handed, destruction, speech, conjuration. I would normally go lock picking but seeing as I can pick even the master locks at low level already I'm not too worried about prioritizing that just yet. I've been selling off all my extra gear and loot, make a ton of gold that way. I never did much of that in Oblivion due to being a Breton and having no strength to carry extra stuff.

At first I thought it was pretty dull after the intro and initial dungeon, but after stepping onto the plains on the way to Whiterun at night, seeing the majesty mountains looming over me, giant moon rising just behind, it took my breath away seriously. After dinking around at the pub in Whiterun and doing a quest for the companions (deciding not to turn into what they are just yet) and getting the sap from an ancient tree in a giant cave to make the tree in town grow I set out on a long journey to the College of Winterhold. Got chased by some giants and woolly mammoths on the way. At one point a fox started following me. :3

Joined the school when I got there and did some grunt work. Later on went to the Bard college festival and burned the king which was great. Found a sunken ship off the coast and got destroyed by some crazy powerful vampires. Did a crap load of other awesome stuff, don't want to spoil anything cool. But safe to say I hardly scratched the surface after 20 hours of playing.

Finally started the main quest now. Killed a dragon. Met the monks on the top of the mountain. The shouts are so much damn fun! I just have unrelenting force and whirlwind sprint so far. Also just bought a small house in Whiterun and organized all my gear and books on the shelfs. After beating the first dragon they gave me a servant that lives there. She keeps asking if she can come with me, watches me sleep and is just creepy in general. Anyway

The best part of the game though? THE ATMOSPHERIC MUSIC AND SOUNDS!!

So I did some of the story, got my first shout, did the first voice training on top of the moutain, killed my first random fly-by dragon. :)

On the other end, I went into a random lighthouse and found a dead body which started a side-quest to find the culprit under the cellar... Maybe I was under-leveled for it, it was all fun cos I died a lot in there.

But it also made me run into a bug. The dungeon had a few cliffs halfway that made it impossible to go backwards once you dropped down.
My follower dropped down the first one but didn't drop down the second one whatever I tried. After ~20mins of failed budging, I used the shout to slowly nudge the follower over the edge. YAY! but there was another ledge at the end... :banghead: another 20mins later, i got her over. Pretty big downer for what was a cool dungeon romp.
Really, save a lot. Don't regret.

So I'm now continuing on the voice quest and going top-left of the map.

It's a shame but I'm not keen on getting people to follow me right now, because of the bugs that could happen. I think Fallout 3 kinda burned me in that regard.

Random tip - Read any book you find. I found out last night that reading one could add a quest to your log. You don't even have to read the whole thing, just activate it. Also some books can give you an instant level up in one skill.

I've been playing with mostly destruction spells and the alchemy is going well, though I haven't done much stealthy stuff recently. I started going west on a quest I found in a random book and I came across a few camps with hostile people along the way. I found a nice town in the mountains. I don't like some of the people, but the Temple of Dibella sounds like something I could get into. Then I decided to finally go to the college of Winterhold (I kept getting distracted by other things), but I stopped at one cave that was really tough. After lots of dying I finally made it to the bottom only to decide that there was almost no way to kill the last enemies so I turned back and just marked it on the map.

I fought and killed my first dragon last night so that was awesome. Course, the first power you get is the shout that pushes things away from you. I put it to great effect when I was back in the Jarl's court. For shits and giggles I made a save and went to the banqueting tables. All those neatly placed ornaments, the rich food and accessories? After I shouted at it, all that shit is either on the floor or splattered against the wall

Went for another quest last night into a bandit camp and had some great moments. Was able to sneak up on the first guy I saw all quiet like and got the animation for a stealth kill. Slit that guys throat and left him for dead. Had a greater deal of difficulty dealing with the bandit leader who I was meant to kill. Not only did he have an enchanted greatsword that hurt a lot, he had two bodyguards with him, one of which an annoying mage and found it hard to deal with all three of them together. I learned though that the two bodyguards were conversing underneath a suspicious looking lamp and standing in what appeared to be oil. So I tried loosing an arrow at the lamp and sure enough, it dropped to the ground and set the pair of them aflame. The captain was dumb enough to run through the flames towards me so that helped out a lot by starting off the fight with the advantage. Made it in the end.

But that raid has put me in an immediate problem with encumbrance. I've got quite a few enchanted weapons on me I want to keep and I keep sets of light and heavy armor cause I can't quite decide which set I prefer to use. And while a house is offered to me, I can't afford it. I'm confident enough to drop something in the world and expect it to be there when I return but still...I'd much prefer a permanent residency to store my stuff and a room at the inn in Whiterun isn't enough for me I think. So that's my main short term goal, earn 5000G for a house!

I want to do more quests for the Companions but a friend of mine on Facebook spoiled something that can happen and I don't know if I want that. For those interested, by completing quests for them at somepoint *SPOILERS* you will have the ability to turn into a werewolf. Sounds cool, but I dunno, I remember doing that had some big drawbacks in Morrowind that I don't want to have. Besides I don't see my character being that type of guy. I'd rather he be a 'Pure' Dragonborn if you know what I mean. Which kind of sucks because the Companions are the Fighters Guild equivalent in Skyrim so that's a big list of quests and the benefits they bring to my melee focused guy that I'm gonna turn away from. Unless there's a way around it but I want that guarantee first before doing any more quests for them. Oh well, it's not like I don't have enough quests going for me at the minute anyway (seriously, there's about 7 active side quests and I'm scared to look at how many I have under Miscellaneous)

I've only been doing major quests, and have a nice backlog of minor ones to do, now :bleed eyes:

Spoilers ahead:
Decided to join the Stormcloaks, because fuck the Empire. The battle to liberate Whiterun was pretty boss, and so were all the quests leading up to that. Been trying to go all magic, or magic + 1H if need be. Fuck yeah, fire! Got the shiny house in Windhelm, too!

Lydia disappeared after taking Whiterun. I guess she died or something, but I really don't care. I've only fought one dragon, and I still haven't even gone to see the Greybeards yet..

But damn, so many bugs. Pathfinding and collision detection is terrible.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls Thread
Post by: zoolander on November 17, 2011, 12:15:19 AM
The pathfinding has actually saved my ass a few times. The Ice Troll on the stairs to the grey beards decimated me 4 or 5 times before I managed to prop myself in a spot where he couldn't get me and I unloaded a few dozen arrows into him from a hundred meters away. I was like two seconds away from just trying to sprint by him. Speaking of arrows, bows are definitely the way to go in this game. I'm one shotting 90% of enemies now and seeing them go limp after a stealth kill is always hilarious and satisfying. :D

Some argonian in solitude pulled me aside on the street and asked me to extinguish the lighthouse so a certain ship will wreck. He told me nobody would be hurt but when I got to the wreck.... anyways long story short don't trust anyone or you may end up fighting both sides.

lol I have about 50 miscellaneous quests. Seems like I do 1 and 3 more pop up....

Companion spoilers: There aren't really any downsides to being a werewolf. When you sleep you can't get the well rested but who cares about that. You can transform whenever you want and can call on wolf spirit familiars. The members of the circle of the companions can all control their beast form. Also the quest line is relatively short but the last mission was so cool. And there are a lot of radiant quests after that that are actually really awesome too.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls Thread
Post by: Tuffty on November 17, 2011, 01:21:01 AM
^ Oh alright then you've convinced me! I can't turn down good quests! It's just that I remember back in Morrowind there were severe ramifications for being a werewolf such as every NPC being hostile towards you. It's ok for a particular playstyle, just not my own where I want to be all chivalrous. Well, as much as possible. But if you say there's no drawbacks then...

Had a pretty funny thing happen to me tonight. Was doing a quest for a family in Whiterun. Essentially this family is at heads with another reputable family, who are richer due to their allegiances with the Imperials. The family who gave me this quest had said that they had a son, presumed dead, but were adamant that he was alive, just captured by the Imperials for his allegiances to the Stormcloaks, and they believed that this other family not only knew the son's alive, but were complicit in his abduction. So I was tasked to get into the house and find some evidence of this. I believe the suggestion was to make friends with them somehow so I could be invited in but I was like 'screw that' so I waited til about 2AM in the cover of night and lockpicked my way through the front door where I sneaked around the house trying to find something. Eventually went into this room where someone was sleeping. Sneaked past her and found a locked door. I unlocked it and walked inside into this narrow room, closing the door behind me. I searched a bookshelf and all round til I saw on the desk was a letter from an Imperial general. It had said that the son was abducted and taken prisoner in a fort and that the family should keep quiet about it. I found the evidence! Happy days!

That's when the door behind me swung wide open. 'Oh shit, oh shit, oh shit' and it turns out it was this boy who walked in through the door and was staring right at me. My first thought was 'What's a kid doing up at 2AM for a start?' and secondly there was a thought on what to do next that would make Jaime Lannister blush. Wondering what to do, the kid broke the awkward standoff.

"Cool! If I'd known something like this was in here I would have come sooner!"

And then he walked away. I watched him leave the room and made my way back outside again without being 'caught'. Too funny.

It's staggering on how many quests you could go on. I went to my room on the same night and woke up in the morning, walking around the marketplace (wanting to sell off the jewelry I picked up/forged for a profit) and saw the town blacksmith working on her forge outside her shop. Seems like she only does it in the early morning as I've only seen her at any other time behind the stall in the shop where I can buy stuff from her. When I was speaking to her, there came up a dialog option asking her about working on this forge which didn't come up any other time and because I had caught her at the right time as she was doing this, she activated another quest where I was asked to deliver a sword for her. It really is crazy to think that there could be some quests out there that I may never discover just because I don't speak to the right person at the appropriate time.

Hei guise I like what coachie said, how about we turn this into a "describe your adventure" thread for skyrim because I really wanna know how each player's experience can be really different from each other.

SO THIS ONE MIGHT HAVE SPOILERS!

As for me, I already shared a screencap of my character Leonidas (guess why), who may look badass in appearance, BUT DAMN he's a fucking breton mage, and I have been wearing mage robes and stuff instead of light armor. So far in the main quest, I had just gone to the Greybeards(?) to learn those other dragon shouts and, I really wanna cry because of this game's awesomeness.  :OMG:

OH YEAH and on my way to the mountain top, A FUCKING DARK BROTHERHOOD ASSASSIN TRIED TO KILL ME!!! When I looted the guy, he has this letter that says some fucking stupid guy prayed to the night mother for me to be killed  :barf:I mean, how cool is that??? In oblivion, I was the one doing the dang killing.

Bought the Whiterun house too. Still need to save up to get some of the furniture.

Did the horn quest. Haven't given it back to the greybeards yet, cos I'm lazy.

Read this tip guide (http://www.gamingreality.com/2011/11/skyrim-tips-and-hints.html) when looking for a way to favorite 2 different swords with one button (didn't find one). Which doesn't really matter cos I'm starting to use sword+shield.
WOAH! There's a sprint button! :w00t:

It talked about the stones in the end. So I tried lighting up the lover stone. All skills improving 15% faster is too good a deal to miss. :)

I actually rode a horse from Whiterun to there cos I like running around and looking at the scenery. Too bad I ran into the mountain that seemed to go forever. Tried falling down it, but it killed me and my horse twice... LOL at my tumbling ragdoll corpse~~ XD
So I tried riding north to see if there was an end to the mountain. Then some 3 bandits started shooting me with arrows. I was already in a bad mood, so I took out their whole dungeon. grrrr.... found some nice magician clothes in the end.

Finally gave up and just fast-traveled back to Whiterun and paid a wagon to go there, and lit up the lover stone. Did in 2 minutes what I failed to do in 2-3 hours. :P

Bought the game two nights ago. Addicting! I love it! Currently level 6, working on getting enough money to buy my first house in Whiterun. Got my first real taste of combat at the uh... Something Barrow, where I got the golden claw and the dragonstone.

I'm an Imperial woman. since I'm indecisive, I'm working on leveling up destruction and one handed combat...among other things.

I hate the sound those fucking spiders make. Creepy. Makes me want to kill them faster.

Stumbled upon a cave during my travels and came across a Falmer. One alone gave me enough trouble, but two at once just kicked my ass. Will have to come back to that one later.

I can't quite understand how people can call this game dull to look at? Bland colours? Really? I never thought I would hear something as ridiculous as character models turning players away from this game but...man. Their loss.

I bought a bunch of furnishings for my house in Whiterun (Eveything except the kitchen), but while out on a quest I fought a hagraven who killed Lydia. Now there's just an unused room in my house. :( She was a good housecarl who saved my inexperienced ass in many of my early quests. My stealth has gotten a lot better. I went through two caves where I stealth killed almost everyone.

I felt really dumb because I couldn't figure out why I seemed to be carrying so much weight even when I didn't seem to have that many items. Turned out that I had a bunch of dragon scales (I think I've killed four dragons). Another reason to pay more attention. I was roaming around barefoot for a long time until I got a stealth kill that allowed me to see my feet.

Heard from a guard there was a dragon sighting on some mountain, so I went to check it out.
Too bad the path up the mountain also had a bunch of bandits AND 2 giants herding a mammoth.

First time I saw a giant was at level 1 and he was at his camp.
I ran up to him hoping to chat. Instead he sent me flying to Oblivion. XD So I was ready to even that score.

After summoning a Flame Atronach (my new best friend) and taking out the bandits, I started hidden arrow sniping the mammoth for tiny damage.
The 2 giants got all angry and came running at me with their clubs in the air. When they got close I did a level 1 Unrelenting Force to slow them down and took some chops.
Then one whack from the giant's club smoldered the Flame Atronach and nearly took me out, so I ran downhill like a coward... :panic: (guessing my follower was just kneeling from this spot onwards)

Summoned another Atronach. And while those 3 were partying, I used a level 1 Ice Form and took one out while they were frozen. That was when the mammoth started coming. :shocked

I ran uphill instead this time continuously summoning Atronachs for the remaining giant to one-hit "mole-bash". And started arrow sniping them again.
As they came at me, they got stuck halfway. Another bug... Or I'll just say they couldn't handle going so high up the mountain. It's chilly up there, even for mammoths.
So I ended up winning that fight pretty dishonorably. :nervous

I want to do the Red Eagle quest next. I got the sword, so I want to see how the quest ends.

Thieves guild  that alone was better than most $60 games you buy now days.

I also did 2 of the Daedric Quests, both were greatness. I found a stone while trudging through a dungeon and well... lets just say Meridia's quest has one of the most epic moments in gaming history. :shocked The other one I also randomly stumbled on a talking dog who promptly led me on an adventure. :3 This game is just INSANE. It's amazing all the little quests you can find tucked into every corner of the game. Some of Them 90% of people that play will never even see but they are awesome none the less.

I also bought a house in Markarth and relocated everything. The house is so much nicer than the one in Whiterun. The landscapes in that area are breathtaking and I really love the dwarven architecture style. Only problem is everyone in that city are DICKS atm. I even tried to solve a murder and got caught in some big plot and thrown in jail. -___-

One other funny thing that happened to me right as I walked into the hall at the mages college I accidentally let out the Ice Form shout which froze a group of 6 or 7 people that were huddled up. It looked like bowling pins falling over.  XD Also got to 100 pickpocket now. I can literally steal the clothes off of peoples backs.

Last night I was fighting a dragon in the dark with the help of my Flame Atronach and I was was doing alright. I was taking some damage, but wasn't worried about dying. Then a bear comes out of nowhere and kills me. I hate bears. I didn't do a lot of exploring last night, just two caves, one of which had a quest that rewarded me with a staff that shoots fire. After it ran out of the initial charge, I recharged a greater soul gem and now I get huge Michael Bay explosions.

Today I made it my mission to go exploring as I've just been hanging around Whiterun for the past few hours (hours!!) so I thought about just going south til I reached the next major city (the name escapes me right now). Along the way I cleared out a mine with bandits, read some books and killed a master vampire and his followers.

Highlight of the night had to be when I ran into this group of witches. There were about three of them and I thought things were going to be fine until I noticed there was a hargraven on top of a mountain launching these fireballs at me. I think I know now what arun meant by Michael Bay explosions. Couldn't take on all of them at once so I legged it away and the witches chased after me, with the exception of the hargraven. I kept running and noticed on the compass above that I was running towards a bear claw icon. I thought I was going to make things worse by running towards a bear camp but turns out it's a camp for Stormcloak warriors. We're all cool with each other so they came to my rescue to fight the witches back. And, to my amusement, the horses started fighting them too!

So just arrived at the city where I called it a night, but before I did I have already been asked to find a dog and kill a dragon on top of a mountain. Interestingly, I've found myself levelling up the sneaking skill trees more than the warriors at the minute.

I've been playing Skyrim since 8PM. It's now midnight. I have way too much fun in this game that the hours just fly by.

Of course, playing for so long means I made some progress. I bought a house in Whiterun! And it looks like shit  Buying it cleaned me out though, so I'll need to build up my coins again. More excitingly, I got a message from a courier saying there was a power source in a nearby mountain, so I checked it out, turns out it's a fucking frost dragon. But after many, many times, I eventually killed it and learned a new shout, 'Throw Voice', which creates a distraction for NPC's. Think that will definately come in handy. But when I learned it, this undead priest thing popped out and I could not cope with it after fighting that dragon so I just belted it down the mountain slope to escape it.

I'm to the point where I don't have to worry about money anymore, in the game at least. I'm over 90k now with 2 fully furnished houses. I've started collecting/hoarding the interesting stuff I find instead of selling. Started piles for dragon bones and mammoth tusks in the entryway of my Markarth house. Also trying to display all the treasures from the thieves guild (Greey Fox bust/Dwemer cube ect.) and fill the bookshelves.

Such a beautiful game...

Finished the Winterhold College quest.
Strange the middle quest was more epic. With its {Skeleton guys everywhere. rooar! It's huge! It's got me in its mouth like a dog with a bone! argggh~ You're Dead} :P
If only it added a little betrayal in the flashback story, I would've loved it even more.
The last one at the college ended up a bit boring. {hack hack hack hack}. At least I have a nice bed now.

Started getting the daedric stuff, only made the armor and helmet so far.

Tried some of the mods, and they're pretty cool. And more importantly, most are pretty easy to add/uninstall (just move the unzipped folder to the game folder)

Ones I've used:
skyrim 4G = My pc is 4G, so I might as well try it. (backup your original, just in case)
loading screen clock = so I don't forget to sleep.
FXAA Injector thingy = looks like a totally different game now. love it.
Skyrim night sky = With this and FXAA, I keep looking at the floor and sky and forgetting to play...
realistic water = ... then I start going under fountains/waterfalls, look up at the falling splashes of water, and for a moment think it's real. :shocked

Just curious. Any other mods/textures you guys are using and recommend? :)

I re-rolled a Khajit, who is going to be the baddest dude to ever live in Tamriel. I'm not going for PUNCHCAT, though. Spent all of today sneaking around, picking locks, murdering everyone that I could. I need to beef up my "Stealth" and "Muffled Movement" skills. Keep having people wake up right as I'm stabbing them. Way too many of the NPCs go into that Doctor Who-regeneration mode shit, though. :catglare: Don't think I can play without a bow again, it's just too good. Still lacking in dragon attacks, sadly; only had one in the past 3 days of play. The intro to the Dark Brotherhood was pretty awesome :thumbup

Had this awesome moment happen to me today. I was fighting this Wispmother and realised it was way too strong for me, so I ran for it. Reached the edge of this cliff and stopped. I looked down to see it was a waterfall leading to a lake below and it was a long way down. But it wouldn't have taken much for me to get killed and the Wispmother was getting closer so I backed up, sprinted with whatever I had left and jumped for it. I fell a long way and crashed into the lake below. I swam up to the surface and pulled myself over the edge onto dry land. That Wispmother wasn't gonna follow me no more. Was one of those moments that feels scripted, but it really wasn't, and that made it more awesome to me :D

So I fired Lydia, and hired Kharjo. Khajiit or bust  When I was at the Khajiit caravan, recruiting him, I realized there was a dragon about. Then I realized it was fighting a giant and bandits. Giant killed them all, I killed the giant. Good times.

Furiously training my archery and sneak. While on this quest for the Thieves Guild (http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Scoundrel%27s_Folly), I let my follower go open up combat with the guards, and then sneak if for the kill from behind. Need to level up some before going to visit the Greybeards. There's a Snow Sabre Cat on the path there and I can't get past it. So instead I was doing some random exploration yesterday, going into caves and dungeons. All well and good, nothing too spectacular. There was a period where I just roaming the countryside for a while with not much happening. I discovered this farm and went exploring there. But as I was talking to the owner, there was this huge shift in the music and I could see a red dot on the compass. So I exited the conversation and I just noticed this huge shadow pass over me followed by a blood curdling scream. Turns out it was a Blood Dragon. Then I heard something behind me, turned around and another Blood Dragon landed right behind me. Me and the guard in that farm did a fairly good job, but I couldn't do it. Was cool though, dragons swooping in low breathing fire on the farm. I guess Dragons don't like Nirnroots or Cabbages.

Funny thing was, going back there after I died, they didn't show up again. What a way to encounter random dragons for the first time.

Decided to finally fight a Dragon Priest (http://uesp.net/wiki/Skyrim:Krosis_(NPC)), now that I'm pushing level 26. He's real easy to get to, near High Hrothgar, and you get the Throw Voice shout too. Bonus points for a dragon, and the thief perks on the mask. Battle was a little frustrating, because of his fireball staff, and the explosions blocking my view when aiming my bow. Good thing I've been working alchemy hard, barely took any damage.

I think I'll actually go see the Greybeards today. Can't wait to see how the dungeons are now, that I'm 20 levels higher from when I went in on my first character.

It's not entirely fair to compare Skyrim to Oblivion (or Fallout 3/NV). The game world is so unbelievably massive and dynamic. There's a whole boatload of story going on. The AI is incredible, and really surprises all the time. There are hundreds of places to visit. There are hundreds and hundreds of quests to do. Everything has voice acting. The game is gorgeous. There's limitless ways to play through the game. I wasn't holding my breath for Skyrim, but I'm sold.

And, you fuckin get to fight dragons.

kanon: I will say that if you didn't like the way Oblivion gave you that free roaming world playing, then Skyrim isn't all that different in structure. In fact it's probably bigger. But it is more interesting than Oblivion's world, there is more stuff to do and it all feels different from each other that you want to see it all. And I guess that's part of the appeal to Skyrim, in that it's so massive, so huge with so much content that you feel like your own playthrough is unique. Hopefully our stories that we mentioned in this thread will give you an indication of different experiences we've been through, and yet none of them are tied to the main story.

To put it simply, I think the appeal of Skyrim is this. You can be exactly the type of character you want to be, where every decision is yours and yours alone and you do it all in a beautifully realised fantasy world that will give you hours upon hours of content. When you think about it, isn't that the essence of what a RPG should be?

Hi kanon~

Just to note. I thought the game was called Skrim till the day it came out.

I remember downloading the Oblivion demo but not liking it at all, so I never bought that game.
I later played a lot of Fallout 3, so that is probably why I'm more used to the playstyle of their games now.

I think the biggest thing you'll decide is if you'll get the PS3/XBOX or the PC version.
Course, pc is cool with all the nice mods. But you will also need to be sure your PC can play the game.

And you will need to think if you'd like playing it with keyboard/mouse or controller. I've switched to controller for a few days and found the loose controls have made me more lazy and careless.
Playing with k/m is a little tiring, but the controls are more precise. So I might switch back after a few more days.

Or you could just hear what the developers think is cool about skyrim:

I got into Fallout more into Oblivion more because it just had a better story and all to me. I tried playing Oblivion once, but it just never seemed good to me. I was thinking Skyrim would be the same thing, but at the same time, it looks really good and seeing some of the stuff you can do is just as good.

I might get it tomorrow and check it out(of course, playing on PS3 is gonna severely drain my HD more than I have already). So for the people who have played, what do I start on first?

^First off, an update just came out (28th for PS3, coming Wed for xbox/pc).
So be prepared to have your PS3 online to download that, cos it has a fix for the ps3 lagging problem.

The first quest will get you to the first city, after that you can just do whatever you want in main/side-questing.
Or do what I did when I first started. Forget about the quests and just explore the nearest places around the city to mark them on your map. :)

Quick note, avoid downloading the latest patch if you can. There have been widespread reports that patch v1.2 has broken resistances, so no matter what enchanted gear, race bonuses or perks you have, your character will take full damage.

Ok Skyrim just got weird. But awesome. For those playing the game, I suggest not reading so you don't spoil the surprise but for everyone else.......my current companion is a talking dog. He's given me a quest to reunite him with his former owner, the Daedric Lord of Wishes. Also got into the Companion's guild after a quest. Was this poignant moment, the inner circle initiating me, going through the verses and I was listening to it all, when this courier interrupted and was plugging a museum I should visit in Dawnstar. "Best"? "Need"?
Sounds like you have to adjust your mindset going in.

I'd just go with whatever makes you go, "Hey that sounds cool!"
If you keep to that, it's hard to go wrong.
As a general rule though, the most interesting stuff in these games is NOT the main quest line.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls Thread

Yeah, the developers had in mind to make some leeway for character change mid-game.

In the Behind The Wall making video (collectors edition stuff) coughtorrentcough they talked a bit about it.
How a starting warrior character could spend time learning magic and start off real weak, but still be able to do cool magic stuff later on as long as the player wanted their character to grow in that area.

So, yeah. Take your 3 hours on the character choosing screen. Just like the rest of us did. :D

Adventures in Skyrim today:

-While walking in the middle of nowhere old lady runs up to me screaming "WABBAJACK WABBAJACK WABBAJACK WABBAJACK" so I'm like wtf!?? pull out my Wabbajack and turn her into a bunny.

-Guy challenges me to a drinking contest at the bar in Whiterun which results in me passing out and waking up the next day in Markarth. Apparently I stole a goat, got married to a Hagraven and did a bunch of other stuff dude where's my car/the hangover style.

-Was fighting some powerful Mages that popped up after I fast traveled when a Dragon started attacking me. Was doing fine until an ELDER FUCKING DRAGON decided to join the party and dive bomb me with ice breath. I retreated a bit to recover but ended up running straight into a camp with 2 Giants and 2 Mammoths who also wanted some of the action. The dragons were smashing into the mammoths and lifting each other and doing all kinds of janky stuff. xD   In the end I killed all the Mages, the Giants and Mammoths took out what was left of the first dragon and I finished off the Elder Dragon then sniped the Giants and Mammoths. wheeeew...

-Then a few minutes later a Briarheart took me by surprise and three shotted me. -__- First time I died in a long time. I have gotten cocky and just wear what looks cool rather than what has the best armor rating. : P

-Oh also made a set of fully upgraded legendary Ebony armor. Gave it to Jordis, still don't dare take her with me though. She is too precious to me. :3 and she messes up my stealth

Played some more last night and there was nothing much to shout about (see what I did there?). Started off on Falkreath and departed in the morning as I walked my way to a nearby quest location, diverging off the beaten path every so often to visit whatever I saw of interest. Found some bandits occupying a nearby ruined tower, a bunch of spriggans and bears in a cave and some random treasure. Along the way I reached this nearby mill by the lake. Very idyllic looking and as I reached there I saw this pretty and polite lady there. I figured she might be good wife material once I get the ability to do so. Made me want to help her out and chop wood for her you know? Did some searching around the place for anything of interest and I walked into a shed. Let's just say on a bench on the shed was an awful lot of blood, a few slabs of meat, a nasty looking sawblade and, get this, a bloody skull. And it looked human. I backed the fuck out of there and ran as fast as my legs could carry me! By the time I made my way back to Falkreath, the sun was setting and I could see the moon in what looked to be a clear and cold winter sky. One of the nicest looking sights I've seen in the game yet.

Managed to buy me an Elven helmet too so now my character is fully decked outin Elven armor. Helmet, body, gauntlets, leggings and a shield. And yet my character isn't even Elven! Looks badass though, I should enchant an Elven sword and really complete the set.

Funny. On my nirnroot walk today, I went to a lumber mill with a woman near a lake too. :P
I wanted to help, but couldn't find any axes for cutting the logs...

She did say something about the workers leaving for something (dun remember). And the house next door was ransacked and emptied.
So they were probably two different places... Starting to sound like some horror movie!

Just joined the Thieves Guild. Their ways are too sly for my goody goody character, so I'll leave them and the dark brotherhood missions till later.

Skyrim Kinect (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Z83wzJwrBK0#ws)

Finished the main Dark Brotherhood quest. AWWW YEAH :hump: I didn't kill Cicero. The Spectral Assassin is nice, but sometimes he doesn't summon in the correct place. He once appeared on another level of a zone (the ship with the emperor), and alerted all the guys, but he killed most of them anyway. The comments he makes are great.

Some awesome moments happened today, in a game that just keeps on delivering them.

Discovered some dungeon so I went inside and made my way through it. It's a giant one that had this huge cavern in the middle, with paths built into it so I had to keep walking upwards to advance. Sure enough I reach the end of a hallway, past some nasty looking fire traps and had to fight a Master Vampire. My weapons and magic weren't doing much damage so I remade my way through the trap hoping the flames would hurt him to kill him. It didn't. So I made my way back to the entrance of the hallway, on the highest level where if you don't watch your step, you could fall off the edge all the way back down the cavern again. Was really low on health and he was winding up a power attack so I instinctively hit him with the shield, cancelling his attack and staggering him. Circled him and dragon shouted at him wanting to push him over the edge. Pushed him back a bit but my Unrelenting Force is only at it's most basic level so that didn't do much. So I hit him with the shield again. Almost. I just had enough stamina and I gave him a power bash with my shield, thinking my guy was putting all the weight behind it and...the vampire fell off the edge plummeting all the way down to the bottom and to his death. Strange, fire can't kill him but heights can. Who knew? XD My reward was an all new dragon shout which lets me swing one handed weapons faster which is awesome. I never really duel wield weapons before but with this, I can really deal some damage!

The best moment of the night came in Falkreath. I was walking through town (literally, I was over encumbered with stuff) and the town guard was walking towards me when he just suddenly drew his bow.

"By the Gods! A dragon!"

Sure enough I turned around and there was a Blood Dragon circling around the town. I dropped whatever I could afford and watched as the dragon landed onto one of the buildings and started breathing ice onto the town and, worringly, onto the villagers (I did not want him killing potential quest givers after all!)

"Quick everyone get inside!"

I shot an arrow at it getting it's attention and ran out of town, leading it away from there. A bunch of guards followed me and backed me up. Took a bit of effort but we did it in the end. I slayed the dragon and got it's soul, which was how I unlocked that new dragon shout. So I got it, the visual effects died, the music had faded down and I turned and saw the guards and a bunch of villagers crowd together at the town entrance, staring at me.

"It really is true. A Dragonborn!"
"I don't know what to say."
"This has got me thinking. Maybe I'm a Dragonborn but just don't know it!"

Uh yeh, good luck with that one mate.

Again, I must emphasise, both events were completely unscripted and they genuinely happened. This game

^ how did you get that? buy some good weapons, buy a house, etc.

just finally put it down for the night. so much stuff I did, mainly subquests for the day. sucks that I'm only at level 10.

finally got myself initated into the Companions just now. probably will finish the rest of the missions tomorrow and then who knows? wonder if that college will help you learn more magic?

btw, anybody got that mammoth tusk in one of the sidequests? I just can't seem to get one at all.

^^Find some trainer NPCs to buy points on secondary skills? :D
On the higher levels they take nearly 2000septims each point. :nervous
I did that for one-handed and conjuration pretty early on (since you can only buy 5 points each level), so I was pretty poor up till now. XD

Invest in a house definately. Also take a look at the shops and buy some armour or weapons you think could help you out.

btw, anybody got that mammoth tusk in one of the sidequests? I just can't seem to get one at all.

I found one out in the world around a hunters camp. I think they sell them too. I got mine from Whiterun somewhere.

finally put the game down for tonight..so much I've done for that day!! :)

first, did all the Companion conquests up to the point where I had to kill a witch, but got killed quickly because of her fire skills.

- got that house in Whiterun and decorated it some
- trying to find Red Eagle's sword
- killed THREE dragons! :) (highlight of my day)

good thing it's raining tomorrow so I can level up some more and maybe get back onto the main storyline XD

Definitely buy the house in Whiterun, if you haven't already. It's small but the most convenient. Solitude is the fanciest but costs 30,000+ to buy with the upgrades and doesn't even have much space for displaying stuff and storage. Windhelm is the best for mannequins and display cases. Markarth is my personal favorite looking with the Dwarven style. Havent bought the Riften house myself yet so can't say if it's any good. There really isn't much to do with money tbh. I'm around 180,000 gold and I don't think there is really anything to spend that kind of money on. Once you get the fences with 4000 gold after fully restoring the thieves guild it's easy to just collect all the expensive armor, weapons, gems and sell them for a lot of cash.

btw, anybody got that mammoth tusk in one of the sidequests? I just can't seem to get one at all.

There are some you can steal in whiterun. The Battle-Born House has one. Khajiht traders buy and sell them. OR just kill a mammoth. :P

been playing a lot of the game for the past couple of days. man, this game is so good! I've been mainly doing the main quest now.

just finished a side quest where I joined with a girl to get a scroll. took me 20 or so tries to finally beat the boss(sadly, at level 15). got a new word and a conjure spell for it's trouble.

I do need some help though. I need to know where the best place to get experience and the best weapons. Plus, how do I get the frost spell(unless I have to go to the magic college to get it)
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls Thread
Post by: Tuffty on December 06, 2011, 11:19:38 PM
Just go exploring in caves/dungeons for some decent weapons and armour. It's all I've been doing and I've got a decent setup right now. Besides, the very best weapons are usually ones you enchant yoursef if you level that skill up enough.

For frost spells, and any spells in particular, I go to the mage in Whiterun and buy them off him.

Most of the time I just picked up better swords from each dungeon romp. :)

You could try the Red Eagle quest got from reading the book. The Red Eagle sword is nice. I didn't use it much though.

The Blades sword I got from an early main story quest was the one that I used for a long time. Only switched after I started making Deadric equipment (the strongest non-unique stuff in the game). Search online for the basic steps on making them if you want.

^ I did the Red Eagle quest last night and a few other side quests as well.

I'm using a glass axe right now, pretty good damage for it. just wish i could make more stuff, but it sucks that i got material, but can't make crap out of it.

finally got that mammoth tusk last night after doing a side quests for a captain in Dawnstar for so non-void salts. it's laying next to a dead hunter next to the salts :P

Glass weapons are already pretty high for non-unique weapons. You'll need to level smithing to get to dragon/daedric.
And it'll be grinding anyways. should be more fun doing quests/exploring with what you've got now. :)

I remember first getting the Whiterun house and putting all my ingredients in the chest found in my tiny alchemy room.
But instead of pressing "R" on the keyboard to store, I kept pressing "E" and ate all the 100+ ingredients. :nervous  Miracle my character didn't die/turn into a Draugr on the spot.

I did a little alchemy and smithing last night, wish there was someone who I can train for smithing since I knew the lady from Dawnstar.

^ See there's an example of how different each of us approach the game cause I'm maybe Lvl 22 and have maybe done 2 Companion missions and no Glass Bow to speak of. Although I do like my bow that has Soul Trap enchanted on it.

This 'Arrow to the Knee' meme has taken off big time. It's the new 'Cake Is A Lie' and just like that, it's become just as tired and I wish it would stop.

Playing again after a few days busy from work. :)
My character is level 37 and I don't think I've done any of the Companion missions! :D Think I was too obsessed with learning Conjuration magic at the College of Winterhold.
I've only been using normal bows, till my last playthrough when I found a fire-enchanted one. It's fun to shoot arrows at bandits and see them run around in flames.
Finished off the Mehrunes Razor quest. Suddenly have enough Daedra hearts to make armor for my follower too!

I actually started on the Mehrunes quest last night. I'm only on level 21 now.

You'll find a good 20-30 in every dungeon, and most shopkeeps sell em. There's also some lockpicking perks that help a lot.

OR (spoilers)

You can join the Thieves Guild. After a late quest, you come into possession of a skeleton key. It will never ever break. You keep it as long as you don't finish the final quest related to it.

Collecting my dragon masks now, and working on collecting more shouts too. I sure love Storm Call.

^ found some lockpicks earlier today, so I'm good. Right now between watching UFC and playing the game, finished the Mehrunes quest and got one of the masks. Wonder how you can get the others?

Hopefully, I can start the Thieves Guild or Dark Brotherhood quests by tomorrow. BTW, on the sidequest where you have to save a Grey-Mane, make sure you say yes for the brother to assist. It got me killed several times trying to get in and out of the place. Damn mages kept being a pain in the ass for me.

Picked a direction and just started walking and without even realising I stumbled onto the place where a bunch of Forsaken were holding onto Red Eagle's sword. Also found his tomb and used the sword to open it up further and fought with the (undead) man himself. Was ready for him when he casted a shout on me which completely disarmed me :o Wasn't expecting it. He was super strong too, I had to retry a number of times. Did it though. Protip: When you're leaving the tomb, make sure to pick up the sword you put in the stone. Killing Red Eagle turns the sword from dealing fire damage to causing undead warriors up to Lvl 13 or so flee from battle. Seeing as you can pick up Red Eagle's greatsword that deals fire damage, it means it's a better sword to have.

Also, I discovered this massive fort in the mountains, again overrun with Forsaken soldiers. And I mean massive, it had multiple rooms and took me a while to explore it all, but it's not coming up as 'Cleared' on my map. Not sure if I'm missing something. Although looking at it, it is tied to an achievement in the game, I guess there must be some quest for it which I've preemptively cleared. Wouldn't be the first time XD

I came across one like that. A big fort with three seperate interiors and quite a few different ways to attack it. I managed to sneak by and climb the highest tower and killed almost everyone with arrows. I actually haven't done a whole lot lately. I'm trying to raise money to buy a home in Solitude(About halfway there right now) and just trying to do a bunch of the sidequests that I picked up early on and forgot about.

As you guys know the current updates fixes some stuff, but brings some other weird stuff.
So I wouldn't try them unless necessary and keep it at vanilla version, till they get their act together.

^ Kanon
You bought the PS3 version, right? It's probably the one with the most lag problems right now.
Bethesda's 1.2 update (http://www.bethblog.com/2011/11/30/skyrim-1-2-update/) was aimed at fixing PS3 lagging. So that might help. 1.3 is aimed at PC, so that won't make much of a difference.
I think you should at least try other things first though, like loading an earlier save at least to see if those still work. And search the net on how other gamers are handling it.

^Paraspam
That's happened to me once only. Returned normal when I reloaded the nearest auto-save.
If you have any mods, try temporarily removing them to see if it helps. And the 1.3 update might fix it...
Or you could try the 4GB mod (http://www.skyrimnexus.com/downloads/file.php?id=1013) if you have over 2GB (won't help much if your problem is a game bug though).
Course, check the net to see if others have the same problem. If you still have problems, you might have to not enter that room ever...

Since the game has a lot of bugs, it just took time till gamers here would start getting problems too.
Hope Bethesda at least fixes the biggest game-stopping ones soon, like lagging and game crashing.
Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls Thread
Post by: kanon on December 12, 2011, 10:25:38 PM
^ well, I don't think you can keep it vanilla unless you put the updates in first. I mean, this is the first major problem for me since I started playing. I do have some save files, but they're from the autosaves.

I hope I don't have to restart my entire game over again

Haven't updated this thread in a while, probably cause I haven't had a chance to play it much this week. What little I did do though, I arrived in the city of Markarth for the first time and that's an um...interesting introduction to the city. Basically the guards give me the usual shit, don't interfere or you'll get in trouble blah blah. So first thing I see when I enter the gates is this marketplace and a woman is at a stall talking about how she would love to buy this item. Before I knew it, this guy pulled out a knife and stabbed her right in the back. The guards leaping up in defense to kill him. :o So that was unfortunate, though it did kick off a cool side quest, a 'who done it' mystery to find out the motive for the murder. Markarth's a cool city, built into the mountains like that. Picked up so many quests too :o Think I found my first broken one too. The innkeeper told me about some guy who had something interesting to tell me. Except, I already spoke to him and found out what it was before I spoke to the innkeeper. So even though there's a quest telling me to 'Talk to ....' anytime I do it just gives me the standard dialogue options. A shame, but no biggie.

OH yeah, odd thing that happened to me in Markarth the first time I visited.

I went to Understone Keep and found my way into the legate's room in the back.  Had a lengthy chat with the legate then towards the end of the convo, I got attacked by a legion guard!  All the while, the legate was still talking to me, not noticing that one of his men was hacking away at me (but of course he wouldn't).  So I defended myself and attacked the guard back.  Then the legate turned on me and then the tiny room was swarming with guards.  It was insane.  I didn't make it out alive because I was just so in shock.

I'm guessing the guard was attacking me because technically I wasn't supposed to be back in this room.  Normally there's a guard at the foot of the stairs leading up to the legate's room who'd tell you that you're not allowed there.  But sometimes he walks away and you can go up.  Maybe he saw me go in and it took him a while to follow me. XD

Well, there's this huge pool under the stone bridge. While walking across and fighting stuff, I lost my companion... I searched the whole place and still couldn't find her. :(
Then I dived underwater to get the treasures, and found her just standing there underwater.... for the past 30+ minutes!

Think I talked to her underwater, far point and clicks, and a few shouts to get her back out. ah.... :nervous

Making my way to create this sick ass enchanted warhammer. It'll make foes up to Level 12 run away in fear when they've been hit. Anyone got a cool name I can give to it?

*EDIT*

Scratch that, Kimmuu came up with one for me quick as you like. A name to strike fear into the hearts of enemies I'm sure you'll agree It should be 'awesomeness' but it wouldn't take anymore characters XD

So last night I was out questing, exploring as I do when on the path to Whiterun I met this farmer with a cow. But it looked like a devil cow, it had these tribal markings painted on him. When I got closer the farmer told me to back off. I was able to ask him why and he said he was walking to a giant camp with the cow as an offering and he didn't want want them to think that I was part of the offering. He said he makes an offering to them once every year and apparently it works, he hadn't had a giant attack on his farm in all that time. I offered to help but he turned it down and we went on our merry way. Except I was curious, I wanted to see this go down so I hung back a bit and followed them. It was funny because during the journey, the cow would just stop, the farmer would walk for a bit, then he too would stop, look around and the cow would then follow as if the cow knew what he was getting himself into. Eventually after about 20 mins (dear lord that farmer was slow) they arrived at the camp. I was thinking what would happen cause I'd never seen or heard of a giant being peaceful before. So as was the norm the cow had stopped, the farmer walked on and the farmer walked right up behind this giant. Then the giant turned round, went into fight mode and smacked the farmer around the face killing him instantly. Seeing this, the cow dashed off at the speed of a deer in the opposite direction.

Seeing all this, at 2AM when I'm already feeling tired, turned out to be the funniest thing ever.

I made it to the Blackreach late last night, but I was really tired from work and knew I would need to get some rest for today so I called it quits. Today I went back to my home in Whiterun to stash a bunch of things and sell some goods. I finally raised enough money and bought a house in Solitude. I still had enough left over to buy a living room, bed room, and an alchemy lab.

great news! I'm back to playing it now!! :) apparently, I can load an autosave instead of continuing to help out.

I do have a question to anybody who has played the sidequest Forsworn Conspiracy. I know you're supposed tot meet this guy at the Shrine of Talos(but the map leads me to the Lovers Stone) Any ideas?

I also wanna finish of Pieces of the Past and get the pommel, but I don't know where that is either.

Reason I'm asking is because YouTube is being a douche and won't load up before it shuts down.

Only did that part in the mission where you meet the guy, and he is definately there waiting at the foot of the Shrine of Talos. The shrine is in Markeath too, just go and seek it out and you should find him there.

I picked the lock to get into the Temple of Dibella hoping that I would get to spy on them performing some secret sex ritual where they rub magic potions all over each other. The followers were just chanting (Fully clothed :( ) and they spotted me. When talk of punishment came up, I thought maybe a spanking or being stripped and forced to walk the streets of Markarth, but no, they wanted me to find some girl.

I haven't fought many dragons recently. I fought one today that was spinning around like it was caught in a tornado.

Went exploring in a cave earlier and I turned a corner leading to a dead end. Went down there and scavanged the mushrooms and when I turned around, this Falmer was literally right behind me, screamed at me and attacked. It was the closest moment yet to Timeon Waters shitting his pants.

Also out in the wilds, I was set upon by a bear which attacked me, Lydia and my horse. Finally killed it and yet Lydia decides to turn around and smack my horse across the face with her flaming greatsword and the two of them had a fight. Presumably it was because the horse had hit Lydia during the skirmish and so Lydia recognised the horse as an enemy at that point. I had to jump on it sharpish and sprint away from Lydia as fast as it's legs could carry him. And yet, after going into a city and back out again, the two were fast friends once again

I've reached that point now where I have way too many quests on the go. I wanted to clear up some today in and around Markarth but as it turns out I only cleared one and maybe got 10 more in the process! I found a glass mace which is awesome, but it's now encumbered me. I can't afford to drop anything and Lydia can't carry anymore so I'll have to do some housekeeping and sell stuff in Markarth, disenchant certain weapons and store whatever's left in my house in Whiterun. Once that's all done though, I found another Bastion on my travels, so I'm heading back there and seeing if there's a new dragon shout for me to learn. And it's not a part of any of my quests, I found this myself! This game....

In between work and other time sinks like Assassins Creed, football and my recent Lovefilm subscription, I haven't had much time for Skyrimming adventures lately. Still manage to put aside an hour every 2 days or so, so I haven't forgotten completely about Timeon Waters.

Had a funny thing happen to me recently too. I was in Markarth, and I did a quest for a dwemer researcher where, for my reward, I was granted permission into the Dwemer Museum in Markarth. So I went there, did a bit of looking and then I noticed the door to the researchers laboratory. But it was locked, so when the guards weren't looking I lockpicked the door and sneaked inside. Was exploring for a bit once again, picking up stuff I found of value. Making my way deeper into the room I turned to my right and there were these metal pipes reaching from the floor to the ceiling with a big steam valve on them, with the option to turn the valve. So out of curiosity, I did, and literally as I heard the valve turn, I heard footsteps behind me. It was a city guard. The game forced me to look at him as I entered into dialogue mode, him with his weapon drawn and ready to deliver the choice of paying the bounty or going to jail like I've seen before.

"What are you doing here travelle...."

Cutting him off mid-dialogue was a massive fire bolt that descended from the ceiling, which hit the guard and killed him instantly. I realised it was a consequence of turning the valve prior to him approaching me. I was fine, but the guard obviously took all the damage that the trap laid out. I didn't get punished, that was the only guard there, and I was free to roam about the laboratory once more picking up stuff of value. I was laughing my way out of the museum

Well finally defeated Alduin, level 59 close to 140 hours played

Restored the thieves guild, became the archmage, leader of the companions, speaker for the dark brotherhood and a shit ton of other things. Still need to do a daedric quest or two and collect a couple dragon masks. Took a crappy picture.

Sooooo overpowered now. Even ancient dragons go down in one or two shots. :P The most recent happening I had just wandering through the woods, saw some giants attacking a fort. I just watched for a while. Eventually the giants killed the group of soldiers and walked off. It was a pretty funny battle to watch. Turns out it was a community of orcs that were being terrorized by the giants which led to a nice quest line and a really cool looking weapon reward upon it's completion.

I've been meaning to share a picture too. So here's my sexy dude:
I freaking love the Thieves Guild. Those guys are my homies.

Speaking of thieves, I traveled to a small village in the wee hours of the morning to sell some dragon bones. Upon my arrival, a lady runs by; screaming. I look ahead to the commotion, and see a thief (in the same gear as myself) taking on a couple of guards, and the local blacksmith's wife. I got a little closer to the action, and then the thief starts to attack. Maybe he was upset that I didn't help out a fellow member. Anyways, dude finally goes done. As soon as that happened, a second thief appears. This guy took a while to go down because he ran all over the place. Only people tailing him were the wife and one guard. The smith's wife cut the guy up with her dagger pretty badly. He even yelled something like "I submit, you win this fight" and tried disappearing into the rushing river. Fortunately, the guard got him; with an arrow to the head. His body was being swept away by the water, but I was able to loot it before it got away. Amateur thieves, bringing dishonor to the guild. Kudos to the wife. That blacksmith must be proud. The screaming lady could learn a few lessons from her.

In another adventure, I killed my first Atronach, a flame one. I know they're not difficult (I guess it depends on one's level), but the first time I saw one I almost shit my pants. I had no idea what it was, and being at a low level when I first encountered it, I thought it would wipe me out with one hit. I ran the hell outta there and let my companion at the time take care of that.

I mentioned in the IRC, and even to a friend that I was re-thinking about buying my own copy (I'm borrowing one now) because the game started to creep me out.  :nervous  But I'm starting to come around slowly, and I'm getting used to everything. Those Caves.... Only time I'll walk into a cave is if it's quest related. If my objective in towards the front of the cave, and I see a pathway that leads to more exploration, I'll definitely be the type to get my things and then get the hell out of there as fast as I can.

Did 'The Forsworn Conspiracy' quest last night and it was the best side quest yet. It was a detective quest essentially, I went to various places inside Markarth asking about the murder victim (the lady who got stabbed as soon I entered Markarth if you remember) which eventually led up into this conspiracy. I thought I hit a dead end of inquiry asking this member of a powerful family if he was involved. But as soon as the dialogue stopped he shouted out his wife's name, I turned around and sure enough, she was lying there dead on her chair, her killer right behind her. I was a bit stunned for a moment, and then the killer reanimated the wife's corpse to fight me and the husband!

Eventually led to me intentionally being sent to jail, all my equipment taken from me, into the darkest recesses of a mine, along with the Forsworn leader. He wanted me to join him but I was like nah son. I built up his trust long enough for him to give me a shiv to kill someone else in the mine, but as he was sitting and writing on his chair, I took that shiv and started fighting him with it. He wasn't expecting a Dragonborn that's for sure! I took his key and escaped the mine through a tunnel which led to me getting my equipment back too.

Some of the dialogue is just too funny though. I mean, if you've ever played an ES game then you know that when you enter and exit dialogue with an NPC they say something generic like 'Hey' or 'Watch the skies traveller' when you leave. Something that every NPC does. Well in the mine, I was talking to someone who had been accused and sent in as punishment for a crime that he and his family didn't commit. He talked with a lump in his throat on how he watched as the guards put his daughter down on the chopping block and had decapitated her before he was sent down to the mine. Heavy stuff. Then when you quit out of speaking with him he goes, 'Alright well be seeing ya!' happy as you like!

Oh, I didn't think I had any other option but to join.  :sweatdrop:

Joining him got me a crazy game bug. The guards would repeatedly try to arrest me after the breakout, and none of the dialogue options would work, therefore they would attack me, and it just wouldn't stop. I finally fixed it, but man, it was tricky. :banghead:

Here's my second character, in the Jarl's Hall in Whiterun.

Up to level 39 now. I'm a little cheesed out in that all my Destruction spells cost 0 or 1 mana from all the cost reducing effects I have. I just stand back and lob fireballs into the room till it seems safe.

Gotta say, the Master Destruction spells are a bit of a disappointment. Much like the Dragon Armor, they're actually worse than what you get one level before. Long charge times and the damage isn't really all that great.

Was about to visit a number of undiscovered places this evening but instead, a long dungeon crawl involving a super tough end boss meant I spent an hour or so trying to clear just this one dungeon. Did it eventually, I turned to my scrolls and realised I had a Summon Storm Atronach which helped me out big time.

Only went to this outside area as well that was surrounded by Forsworn. They were up to some bad shit too, I saw a Nord dead in a hanging cell and one of the Forsworn even used another Nord's skull on the Grindstone to try and sharpen up a weapon or something. Not pretty. Was sneaking around and I heard one of them talk about how one of the guys had been elected to be a Briarheart. I have met them a few times now and they've incredibly strong mages, easily identifyable as they have their heart exposed. I sneakily took out a couple but then I bumped into one of their traps by accident which set everyone off. Was being rushed at by melee guys and saw archers in the battlements above raining down at me. I thought I was a goner when I saw Lydia come charging to my rescue. Love that woman. Went up a little higher and saw a wall for a Dragon Shout, but also, surprisingly, two Hargravens standing over an altar with a dead Forsworn lying on it. I could actually hear them chanting and sure enough when they stopped, they turned to attack. But also, the corpse was risen from the dead as the Forsworn Briarheart. So they're undead all along, the Forsworn using Hargravens somehow to strengthen their cause. Bad mojo. Me and Lydia took out the whole lot of them and I got a sweet new Dragon Shout for my effort by turning ethereal, making me immune to damage for a short time

Also, tonight was the first night, after 50hrs of playtime now, that I've seen the northern lights

When talk of punishment came up, I thought maybe a spanking or being stripped and forced to walk the streets of Markarth, but no, they wanted me to find some girl.

Really? I did it and they were all naked and were very happy to see me.

....Well ok, not really, I had the same experience as you. Wonder if it's different if you're a female character :nervous That was a cool quest cause it's been the first quest I've done so far where the reward is a permanent buff to your character (i.e. dealing more damage to members of the opposite sex). Funny thing is that quest reused a dungeon I already did for the quest for Molag Bal, so for me it was a clean walkthrough an empty fortress to find the girl.

So I decided I spent enough time in the Reach. For now at least. There are areas yet explored (a lot despite me spending 20 hrs in and around there :nervous) and the Forsworn are still a thorn in my side so I will return at some point. But I thought it might be better to venture off to another capital city and see what awaits me, so with that in mind, I went far up north to see Winterhold and join the Mages Guild. After all, I've put it off after 60hrs of playtime now as well as the Thieves guild and Dark Brotherhood. Hell I haven't even done much Companion guild quests yet. :o Bought a bunch of higher level destruction magic spells which is great. Done the first introductory stuff already, now I'm just gonna explore around that area a bit.

Title: Re: The Elder Scrolls Thread

There is a fast travel option! You can't fast travel to any places you haven't discovered yet but once you do, you can just open up you map, select it and fast travel no problem. There are also horse carriages at the gates of each major city that operate pretty much like fast travel as they can take you to any other city which can save you the time travelling on foot.

I successfully completed the theft at the Temple of Dibella some time ago. I really liked it for the "lol" moment I experienced. As I was leaving the room where the statue was located, a priestess walked in. I was off to the side crouching, and thought I was quite visible in her line of vision. Anyways, all I was thought was "crap, I'm done", but she just kept walking, and I wasn't detected! I didn't know my sneak was that high.   I later went back to purposely get caught (for the other quest.)

I also got a little freaked out by head priestess. She appeared to look a bit taller than other NPCs (to me at least). She was walking back and forth in the room...it just really creeped me out. I thought she was gonna kill me.

Did an interesting quest for one of the Daedric princes, Namira. It started off by a priest of Arkay asking me to investigate a crypt in Markarth who found several bodies had been eaten. Turns out it was a woman who was eating them and she said she had wanted me to join. She said she would leave if I could clear out a cavern full of Draugr for her so I did. What I didn't realise was that clearing the cave puts you on the path to worship Namira, which meant joining her little cannibal clan. I just wanted her out of the crupt. To follow on from that the woman now wanted to bring the priest to her to be killed and eaten for a feast for her, me and the rest of the clan she knows. So I brought him back under false pretenses and she used magic on him to lay him down on the altar as a sacrifice. Turns out the rest of the cannibal cult included several people from Markarth that I had known and had done quests for. Like the shopkeeper who asked me to bring back a stolen statue for her that belonged to her husband, or the owner of the dog stables who I had to deliver spiced beef to the Jarl for ("Now you know what I spiced it with" he told me). So the only option I was given was to kill the priest, as there was no dialogue to reject it. So I saved it, did it and then had to feed on his corpse (luckily no cutscene) just to see what the reward was (a ring that restored health and stamina if I feed upon corpses.) but it wasn't worth it, so I reloaded the save and killed the whole cannibal clan instead. What was interesting was that the priest also gave me a different reward as a result. Doing it my way failed the quest but whatever, Timeon Waters is not a cannibal.

Also I think Lydia is fucking with me. Like recently we went in and cleared out a cave and when we emerged she said "Ooh a cave. I wonder what's inside." Really?

Oh and also, I got all three words for Unrelenting Force. Holy crap that shout is just so much fun to use.

I haven't played in a while because after about an hour of exploring I died. Losing a lot of progress always makes me stop playing a game. I picked it up recently. After making it out of a difficult dungeon, I found the second part of the Whirlwind Sprint shout and had to fight a Volsung(?) that killed me quickly the first time. I was a little more prepared the second time, so I managed to kill him. I've been a little bored just casting spells so I grabbed a shield, mace, and greatsword that I was planning to enchant and then sell. I've been having a lot of fun with the greatsword lately. I think I may go back to using a sword and shield soon though.

To celebrate the opening of the Steam Workshop for Skyrim, Valve and Bethesda have teamed up to bring you the Portal 2 Space Core mod, which will let the aggressively space-centric little robot tag along on your adventures in Tamriel.

Also, since Skyrim was the only major release of 2011 without Nolan North in it, you should consider this mod a patch to fix that problem. You can now feel free to include Skyrim in the "Nolan North" section of your video game library, which is to say, your video game library.

Just came out of the longest dungeon crawl in the game. I could swear it took me close to 2 hours to get through it all. Rewarding though, I got a sweet shield out of it as a reward (the Peryite Daedric questif you're wondering). Had an epic moment where 3 enemies were running for me when I just FUS RO DAH'd them bitches over the edge and plummet to their death. Also unlocked a perk that allows me to randomly decapitate enemies with my one handed weapon! It's how I killed the boss in that dungeon, FUCK YES.

That's messed up Shi! I want the cute one back!

Ever since I enchanted an Ebony Sword to have the paralyze effect it almost feels like cheating. Enemies just fall over and I keep hitting them, stacking the effect over and over with each hit until they're dead. Don't recall any heroic escapades from Timeon Waters lately, he's just chillin, doing quests for the Mages Guild and continuing to be an an all round fantasy badass. I also gave Lydia 2 lightning staffs which she has been rocking in combat at the same time. Just because.

Same thing happened to me in Oblivion Shirenu. Got vampirism somehow, I looked up the elaborate cure and went through all the steps only to find out the weird look is permanent. Had to start over again cause I just couldn't stand it. X_X

I googled and apparently if you load an older save pre-vampirism and then load your vampire game you can at least get rid of the weird face for each session. I haven't tested if I can make it last if my girl is cured and thus, shouldn't have the male vampire face loaded for her anymore. But I found a cheat for adding the potion to my inventory, tested it last night and it worked; but it was bed time so I didn't try messing with the save thing yet. HOPEFULLY I STILL HAVE SOME OLD SAVES LEFT LOL.

I'll let you know if it worked >o<

If I can't fix my character's face, I'm afraid that's it for me with this game lol, I don't love it enough to not be bothered by her changed face and don't feel like starting all over and having to avoid vampire places. (If anything, I now want to pay revenge to vampires for causing me all this trouble!!)

I DID get my lovely lady's face back!!!

Oblivion, curing vampirism~

What I did was...
Open the command window with the button under ESC (it's supposed to be ~ on some keyboards, but for me it's §½)
Write in player.additem 977E4 1 (note that pasting most likely won't work so write it on a piece of paper if you can't remember it)
Now you should have the vampire cure potion in your inventory.
Drink the potion and save.
Load a game from before you turned into a vampire - or a save from another character, I heard that works as well but I didn't test that.
Then load your cured character, and save. His or her old face should be back. And it should stay, like mine did! ^___^

So after a long haul in a dungeon, I emerge on the other side. A door with a bar across is blocking the way so I unlock it, open the door and reveal that the door is built into a mountain face. It's midnight when I emerge with a full moon right in front of me and just sweeping across my view, a hawk flies by. Stunning scene, I watched that hawk fly for a while. That is, until I decided to see if I can shoot it down with my bow. So in the dead of night, and the only thing remotely interesting I can do with a bow is to zoom in with it, I notched an arrow, the first of many I assumed, held aim for a while and let fly....

....And I got the fucker in one shot! I was hop skipping all the way down the cliff face as I saw it plummet down. I got down to the ground and did a little victory dance over it. Then I saw Lydia, in her infinite wisdom, decided to follow me, but all that heavy armor must have affected her descent as she was already dead by the time she hit the ground. *sigh*

Another funny glitch happened earlier when I killed a Silver Hand and his body was litterally spinning out of control, up, down and all around. Tried to follow it but it was going so fast and into the woods before I could catch up.

Wait....dragons can talk to you now? :o

Also unlocked a new dragon shout and used it in a city to try it out, only to have a guard run up to me and tell me to stop shouting in the city as it's making people nervous. He was very mean though, it hurt Timeon Waters feelings.  :(

Know what else is weird? I've put in over 80hrs now into Skyrim, and there are still 4 major cities I haven't explored through yet. Think I'll go to Windhelm next. It's the closest to the mission I was just on and I believe the Imperial/Stormcloak quests are kicked off from there?

I killed my first giant and mammoth today!

I was walking along a path and saw a giant camp in the distance so I thought why not?! To my luck, I saw only one giant and one mammoth there, and the giant had strayed from it so I took my chances. After all, I had Lydia with me and Unrelenting Force at full power, so the strategy was to test out my new weapon, 'Oathkeeper' (which I thought was a pretty cool name for an Ebony Bow with the soul trap enchantment) and keep him at distance as I was on elevated ground, using Unrelenting Force if he was getting too close. And I did it! Mammoth soon followed. They ain't got shit on me now!

The new 1.5 patch is out now for console and PC btw. The ranged and magic killcams are pretty sweet.

^ I would love to see the new kill cams. Don't have the game now (been over a month since I last played) but I'm thinking of getting my own copy.

I've been thinking about the games' weapons a lot lately, and decided to share my favorite.

The Ebony Sword. This is my baby. This is my "master sword." Beautifully crafted, isn't it? I didn't acquire it till later in my journey, though I believe I had come across it before when I faced a boss Draugr. I guess the fact that I discovered mine in a tightly locked chest made the weapon appeal more to me. As though I removed Excalibur from the stone.

Before the Ebony Sword I was rocking the Blade of Woe. I think it fit my character's image more; bandit/thief Nord.
And before the Woe, I rocked two maces. Now that I think about it, my guy looked a bit ridiculous with them. When I first started playing, I knew I wanted my character to be a sword guy, but a mace was the first weapon I came across, and I just went with it.

Annoying glitch time. Aela is stuck as a follower. I couldn't get rid of her nor could I finish the quest that I began with her. I know why it happened, but sucks that I really can't do anything about it. Just gotta wait for a patch (if they ever decide to fix the problem). I guess the one cool thing about her following me 24/7 is that I have guaranteed protection. Also, she carries a torch during the night/in dark places. How cool is that? Being accompanied by a friend/bodyguard that's raising a torch by your side.  I felt like royalty.

Hell yeh the Ebony Sword is a beautiful weapon. I have the Mace of Molag Bal, which by definition is my best weapon, but like you mode, I am a sword guy, and the Ebony Sword just looks so cool. Plus, when you have it enchanted with a Paralysis effect, you have a pretty powerful weapon indeed. All of the Ebony weapons/armor sets look gorgeous. The mace, the warhammer and now using the bow. Shame it's a Heavy Armor type, as my guy is Light Armor focused, but I did pick up a full set which I have Lydia wear instead.

I used my trusty Wuuthrad for a long time. But eventually I found Volendrung. For the rest of the game nothing else ever matched it's awesomeness. Plus people on the streets tell you how awesome your hammer is. XD

Of course being a sneaky sneaky type my beastly Ebony bow with over 200 damage plus frost damage and stamina absorb was my go too.  ;)

For armor nothing beats Nightingale. I mean it's got a freaking cape so it makes me feel like Batman roaming skyrim (I had to substitute Captain Valmir's bear head helmet thing). That along with enchanted dragonscale gauntlets and boots was SWEET.

Had another great experience earlier which I should share. Myself and Lydia climbed up a mountain only to find an Elder Dragon guarding a dragon wall. Tried a bunch of times to scrape a victory, trying to hide and pop shots out but it wasn't working. At one point I was hiding in a shack and the dragon got close enough to actually eat me through the shack which was funny. So I thought about getting more reinforcements nearby, but the closest majory city was Whiterun, quite some distance away. But I asked Lydia to stay in the mine we came out of, and I got the dragon to follow me. Once I descended down the mountain, I legged it towards Whiterun, in a Pheidippides-esque feat of endurance.

Along the way I found a mammoth in the field so I hung around hoping the dragon would aggravate him. Turns out it just stood there and took the dragon fire. So I ignored it, and eventually made it to Whiterun where some guards came and helped out. Felt kind of bad that I just arrived at their front door with a dragon at my back, but not for long  Anyway, me and my guard homies were attacking it when the dragon just kinda, flew away back where I came. So I followed it, went over the hill and know what I saw? The mammoth had followed me and the dragon was attacking it! Managed to kill the dragon in the end, now there's just a dragon skeleton humping the Whiterun bridge.

Had a cool moment with Skyrim earlier, I travelled across to a fortress as part of a quest I was given ages ago. Some guy was supposedly being held there as a political prisoner and his mother wanted him freed. So I went right up to the guard at the front to ask entrance, but the guard flatly refused me, telling me even if the prisoner was there that I would need a pardon from the Imperial Legion. Seeing as the Legion and I don't see eye to eye I decided to fight my way in instead, but I bit of more than I could chew as there were tons of guards, all with high level gear. There was no way I could take them all on. So I reloaded the save, looked around for a back way in and found another entrance guarded by someone. There was no way to sneak up and kill him so I used an invisibility potion I had and snuck right past him, picking the lock on the door to bust on directly into the prisons. I found the guy there, after fighting a few guards along the way and we made our escape back the way we came. The guard I snuck past turned around and saw us but as he drew his sword to attack, I shouted at him which froze him in place and the prisoner and I sprinted for it as the rest of the guards saw us and were firing arrows at us. I talked to the prisoner, completed that quest and sprinted as long as I could, arrows wizzing past me all the while, eventually making my escape by diving into a river and swimming downstream. Pretty badass. I don't want to run into Thalmor anytime soon XD

Speaking of epic, here's a fantastic fan made battle. Huge numbers of NPC's going at it and some really nice camera angles shot like a movie. Also has Dawnguard spoilers though so don't watch it if you're still playing it.

I know right? Moments like that make me wish I record my gameplay.

Some more significant events which happened when I arrived in Riften. As part of a quest I had to intimidate a priest through whatever means necessary. We got to chatting about the goddess Mara and the temple before I chose that dialogue option trying to intimidate him. He was then like 'NAH-UH' and then started a fist fight with me! So I had to punch him right back! It was just funny cause he was saying 'May the blessings of Mara be upon you!' as he was doing it. Really polite guy for someone who wanted to knock my teeth in. Anyway, I won, he was intimidated, quest complete.

And in other news....I got married! Finally found out how to do it and I was wondering at first who to pick. The prospecting trader at Whiterun? The farmer at Windhelm? But in the end, it could only be one choice. I chose...Lydia. My housecarl. My swordmaiden. She's been with me for the majority of the journey. She's climbed the highest mountains, slain the fiercest dragons and wields an axe better than anyone I know. And guess who was the one who married us? The priest I beat up earlier! And Skyrim weddings are fast too, holy crap. You think a Vegas wedding is short, try gettng married in Riften, you'll be married in less than a minute. I took a photo of the happy couple.

Congrats Tuffty.
When I first started Skyrim, I rushed into marriage because I was just so intrigued by the idea. I married my Nord off to Ysolda, but I had some regrets a while after. I kinda wish I had known of Sylgja earlier.  Those regrets are starting to go away now, because Ysolda has the motherly qualities.

I adopted two kids; (with the Hearthfire add-on)  Lucia and Hroar.

Even before Hearthfire was confirmed, I always told myself I would adopt Hroar if the opportunity came; I liked his personality.  I ran into Lucia as I was on my way to adopt Hroar. My family lives in the Whiterun house, which is quite crowded right now; Lydia the housecarl, Ysolda the wife, and the two kids. It gets pretty hectic when I walk in with a follower as well. By the way, I was able to turn the alchemy lab into a children's bedroom; I never used that lab anyways.

It's fun interacting with the children; telling them to do chores, go outside (they'll moan and groan about this, they must love staying inside o.O ) , give them a gift, play hide and seek/tag.

I've started construction of a new house near the Falkreath area. Not sure if I'll live there because I love the gated community of Whiterun.

Riften's a pretty cool place for quests. Me and the new wife took an imprompt honeymoon out in the wilderness near by. Walked through a forest and along the mountains, went hunting, a bit of sight seeing just exploring areas nearby. That's when a group of bandits marched right up to me demanding I pay them money. They didn't realise they were messing with

a) The Dragonborn
and b) The Dragonborn's Wife

Lydia put an axe through the head of one, I literally decapitated another and then got rid of the other guy when I Fus Roh Da'd him off a cliff.

Now contemplating which side to join for the war, but both seem as bad as each other. The Imperials seem like a bunch of bastards for marching in and preventing the Nords from going about their way of life. But then the Stormcloaks are just as bad if they mean to make Skyrim a Nord only place, driving all the elves into exile.

Remember that old man just outside the Imperial City who gives you a fishing quest?? I've never figured out how to actually catch the fish, so this time instead asking him how I could help, I chose to laugh in his face. And omg, he got so angry he wouldn't even let me talk to him again. So I thought, damn, this dude is no use for me anymore, is he? ...So I put an arrow in him and wondered what would happen. The bad thing is, I stupidly checked what he had on him and got thrown into jail just a moment later when I left that area for stealing 3 gold. ;_; So if I kill more innocent people, I should first pickpocket them and then kill? Or what. Well, that was the first time I actually killed an innocent in this game (on purpose) so that's new. I got thrown into jail and freaked out when they let me go because there was a battle outside between a mage and a bunch of guards. I have no idea.

Lmao I used to play Oblivion. I remember that guy with the fishing quest, you're supposed to jump into the river and start looking for the fish and kill them lol.

I always play as a Khajit cos of night vision. And yes sneak kills are awesome. I've pretty much mastered archery and the art of sneak kills even with a blade lol. I just enjoy sneaking around in general. I think I went into that one dungeon filled with vampires and basically sneak killed my way through every single enemy in there. Detect Life is your best friend if you're sneaking around and want to know whether you have anyone nearby to spot you. It's slower to play that way but I find it satisfying to assassinate people. Lol.

Now you make me want to play Oblivion again D:

Oh and about murdering non hostile NPCs, you can get away with it as long as no one sees you doing it XD but expect a visit from the assassin guild soon...can't remember their name. I like their questline haha. Have fun and tell us more!

Haha well my character from that story totally died like two Skyrim days after that, so I don't think there will be part two... (I was going for "when she dies, she dies")

Discouraged and depressed, I started another new game lol, with the same randomized starting point thing and anti-fast-travel ideology (but no anti-death)... So... I'm at fucking Winterhold again LOL (I died shortly after entering the college in my RPG attempt...) I've progressed some that I can kill some bandits and necromancers etc. in addition to wolves, but basically, I can't do anything much because my skills are so crappy XD I'm level 3 or something and the dungeony areas here with some more special enemies are haaard. I tried accessing some and got my ass kicked XD But maybe this is realistic... Also, I guess I'm going for a mix of magic and archery, unless magic drives me insane again. Idk how it can make me feel so WEAK lol. I can't even gain access to the college yet because I don't "have enough magicka" to cast the spell the lady at the entrance wants me to do  So pathetic

This is nuts, a modding team is working on creating Morrowind using the Skyrim engine

I'm considering getting Oblivion (Game of the Year edition). I'm just concerned that this "dated" game would frustrate me. I remember playing Fallout 3 and being frustrated with a number of things; one reason was that there was no regenerating health like there is in Skyrim (which is understandable since Fallout 3 was released before Skyrim). I just have this worry of regressing from Skyrim, and being upset for even purchasing the game. I understand that Fallout is a different game, but I just didn't connect with the gameplay (I feel that I could tolerate an upcoming Fallout). I didn't think Skyrim was for me at all (it freaked me out), but then I ended up loving it. Anyways, I'm posting and asking to see if anyone thinks someone like me (who's first Elder Scrolls game was Skyrim) could be satisfied with Oblivion.

Edit: I bought the standard version.  :P

Enjoy mode! I haven't played Oblivion in a long time but I don't think there's that much of a leap between playing it and Skyrim. There are features obviously which aren't in Skyrim (dual magic, shouts etc) which you might miss, but I think it's still essentially the same kind of game. Looking back on it, you can criticise it for the samey looking dungeons and ridiculous auto balancing (e.g. coming back to opening areas as a high level character will also raise the enemy's difficulty so you can't swarm through bandits as they're wearing glass armor) but all in all, if you liked Skyrim, you're like Oblivion.

Now, try to go back from Skyrim to playing Morrowind! That's a shock! Combat is essentially different and now wildly depended on dice rolls so your melee attacks can miss. The journal system is pretty basic, anything you do in a quest is written down as an entry, but there's no markers on the map telling you where to go. What really annoyed me about the journal was that I could start a quest, do a couple more note worthy, unrelated things, but there's no way to sort them out by quest so if you want to see what happened last you literally have to skip back pages to find the entry (it's not titled or anything) and what it was you were trying to do. So you could come back to it, as I have, and literally have no clue what quests you were on, which were completed and where to go next. And of course. The cliff racers. Ughhhh. Fucking cliff racers. The most annoying enemy in any Elder Scrolls game.

Still, I think Morrowind might be my favourite of the series. Playing it at the time, with it's sheer scope and scale was unlike anything else I'd ever played before. The setting is completely unique to high fantasy fiction and yeah, just many happy memories playing it (despite the bugs). Also, it has some of the best music:

I've never played Morrowind so I don't really have the appreciation that other die-hard Elder Scrolls fans have.  However, I've played both Oblivion and Skyrim and I find myself preferring Skyrim a lot more (I only played through Oblivion once and it was pretty much a half-assed playthrough at best).  I guess I'm a sucker for newer graphics and whatnot.  I mean, both games have tons of mods to improve the experience, but playing Skyrim with some various mods gave me an experience that I just never felt when playing Oblivion with mods.  Anyhow, I actually signed up for the ESO beta a while back but when the news came out that it was going to be subscription-based, I decided not to join the beta testing (I was actually prepared on the scheduled date until I read the news).

He gets in my face and PUSHES me, lol. Why? What the hell? At least he seems somewhat invincible, and I don't have other allies with me (RIP Lydia >_>), so I guess he can stay for now...

This Youtube channel is great at capturing beautiful game worlds and Skyrim is surely one of the most stunning.

I still never have

in 2016

There's probably some higher level armour even, and I don't even know... Crafting isn't really my thing ...
