Ok I recorded a Quake 4 netdemo, instructions here: http://www.iddevnet.com/quake4/NetworkDemos (http://www.iddevnet.com/quake4/NetworkDemos)
And I ran it over 1152x864 and 1600x1200 both on high detail presets 1152x864 got 139fps 1600x1200 got 75fps
Machine specs are: Core 2 Duo e6600 @ default speed of 2.4 1gig Corsair ddr2 800mhz 5-5-5-12 (lol it was pretty cheap nothing to brag about) Asus P5B Vanilla XFI 7800GT 256mb @ default clock 450core 1050mem
Not much else to say really
oh, Quake 3 Time demo gets 819fps on 1152x864 everything high and 697fps on 1600x1200 everything high I remember getting 50fps with my GF2mx, those were good days :D

How much of a difference does the 800mhz memory make?
My PC comes with 2gb of 533mhz, but it supports 800mhz. When I upgrade to 4gb should I replace it all with 800mhz?

It just makes more memory bandwidth. To be honest I doubt you'd notice a difference. Just the fact you're using a Core 2 Duo makes everything extremely fast :D

I cancelled the Dell since there were indeterminable shipping delays. Going to build it myself - hopefully with better components:
This will be my first PC I'm building completely from scratch.
I'm inexperienced in the realm of planning cooling and the like, so please let me know if you see anything missing or that would be a bad idea. Thanks! :)

Motherboard: ASUS P5NSLI ATX LGA775 Conroe Nforce 570
Plus SATA and IDE cables and Microsoft Windows XP Home Edition OEM.
I'm also debating adding a Logitech G15 Keyboard for the coolness factor.

ahh i see. i guess thats a good idea =P dont wanna do anything that will shorten the computer's lifespan xD
too bad you didnt go with AMd hehe, most of their new CPU/Heatsink combos already have a thermal pad on it. ive never dealt with thermal paste, seems confusing to me =P but other than that, installing the other parts should be a breeze.

lol it's pretty basic asmo, you'll have no trouble. Intel boxed cpu's all come with a thermal pad thingo on the heatsink too so you pretty much just strap in the cpu, slap on heatsink and push down the clips around the side. Don't turn them, that undoes them, you just push them down as far as they go until they click. Also you might find it's easier to put the heatsink on before you put the motherboard into the case as well and you might see that when you do put the heatsink on, the motherboard will flex a bit under the tension and that's completely normal all motherboards do it and they're built to withstand it so don't worry. Just shout out if you have a question.

I'm not doing SLI because my monitor is only 1680x1050 so I wouldn't see much of an improvement with current games.
I'm better off saving the dough and using to buy a DX10 video card in a couple years.

Asmodai, I'm so happy you didn't order the computer from dell, it's not necessary and (even if YOU don't realize) it's less computer for your money.
It's not hard to build a computer by yourself, even I could do it after some information gathering and reading.

you bought an E6400, not an old P4 EE. the TDPs are so good on the new conroes that the thermal bond is no longer the issue. MaximumPC magazine recently ran a benchmark on the X6800 (new top-of-the-line Core2), and "accidentally" forgot to plug in the fan on the heatsink, and was still able to run all of the intensive benchmarks without any problems (and still managed to whoop the FX-62's arse)

nice! good thing you have the V2100. i used to have a bigass CM case but moved to a lian-li a V600 because i actually move it more often than i work in it. got a hdd bay convertor and am running 7 hdds internal. my revB P4 doesn't have great numbers, but the thermals are well within reasonable levels and the V600 has amazing venthilation for my hdds (they never get above slightly warm to the touch)
Alas I couldn't get it to take recognizable picks of the final set-up.

As the name implies 'defragment your disk' (files on them actually).
It has to do with when big files get spread in small pieces across your harddisk, as the heads of the disk take time to travel to each part of the file, it takes longer to load then when a file is 'defragmented'. Dedragmented means 'more continues', it depends a bit on the program used how good the endresult is.

I love Soft Domes! I've used IBM/Lenovo Thinkpads for the past 10 years, and I've always loved the Trackpoint nipple pointer. It allowed me to move my curser without removing my fingers from the home row or contorting my thumb down to a weird angle to hit a touchpad.

For most of those years, I used the Classic Dome pointer (left), which is like a fuzzy nipple with curved edges. Worked great, but after a few months, the fuzziness goes away and the nipple gets all smooth. With less traction, more effort was needed to move the curser. I moved to Soft Rim pointers last year (right). These are like a hard cylinder-shaped eraser, with a concave tip that you can stick the tip of your finger in (I always just put pressure on the edge of the tip). Less energy needed, but it wasn't as accurate as the Classic Dome.
I recently bought a pack of Soft Domes to try out (center). These require by far the least energy, but these small stubs on the top of the nipple provide great grip to the tip of my finger. I have truly found paradise!

Only one way to find out :D First download this http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/ (http://www.thecoolest.zerobrains.com/CoreTemp/) It monitors the thermal sensor which is built into each core. Then download Orthos http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm (http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm) and run that for 10minutes or so as you watch the temps. Orthos will fully stress both cores, you can leave it run overnight if you want. It's also handy for overclocking you run Orthos to see if the cpu is stable or not at a certain clockspeed and vcore. If it's not it will say failed :D and you gotta clock it back a bit or put the vcore up to make it more stable. <-- don't try this with stock cooler k kids.
Anyway my 6600 gets up to 53c both cores when stressed at stock speed and vcore. When I overclock it gets anywhere up to 65c.

ARRRRRRHHHHHHH!HH!!!!!H!!@$**$&#*###
Two laptop drives busted in two weeks!!!!!!! I thought that since the drive never got hot, it wasn't spinning up when not in use (unlike 3.5" drives, which get hot even if they're plugged in and idle). So when the enclosure dropped from a 1.5' high table, I hoped it would be all right. But no go - it makes these wack-wack-wack-chack-chack-chack noises and the system doesn't detect anything.
I will never, EVER use those cheapo $10 aluminium drive un-protected drive enclosures. They suck. Suck. Suck! SUCK!!!! They're evil. EVIL!!!! Gotta get me something with silicone rubber shielding of something more substantial to protect the drive against bumps.

I installed (and am using it half the time) and I find the standard theme to be a bit 'blase' compared to the 1.5 version, like the buttons at the top 'are only half there' and washed out. But for the rest it runs and doesn't seem to be to slow in loading.

here you go arian, i found a keygen for you (and checked it so that there are no viruses or whatever). if you didn't enter a serial number, you can generate one. but for the activation part, you'll have to disconnect your computer from the internet (it'll automatically try to activate online). once it finds out it can't connect to the WS_FTP activation server, it'll ask you to do a challege/response--pretty straightforward.

Sirlin.net (http://sirlin.net/) is the webpage of game designer David Sirlin. He is also a very well known player in the US Street Fighter community. His site has very good articles about game design and playing to win in video games. Reading these articles helped me a lot once I started playing competitively. A very cool thing I just noticed there today are some tutorial videos for Super Street Fighter 2 Turbo. I haven't watched them yet though.

They did change version to 7.5 around the end of last year and that brought up a message on all the old versions that looked like you had to buy the new one when really you didn't have to. Try uninstalling whatever current version you have and download and install this. http://free.grisoft.com/doc/avg-anti-virus-free/lng/us/tpl/v5
That's what I'm using and it's completely free.

I use a MS Comfort Optical Mouse 3000 - it's pretty symetric, but works decently and was reasonable.
My suggestion would be to go to your local Best Buy/Fry's/Future Shop/etc. and just see how different mice on display fit your hand and your budget. Often it's just a matter of finding one that matches your hand.

i find some of the buttons superfluous, but it's not too big and not too small, and has a nice solid feel/weight. i used to have a thing for bluetooth mice, but after having a lot of problems with bluetooth and eventually not using any of my bluetooth mice, i switched to standard 2.4ghz RF.

This weekend I was at a tournament held at this store called Game Junkie. It was a pretty cool place that had a bunch of TV setups. well the iphone is overpriced imo(and so is pretty much everything that comes from the ipod), but the money you pay for service would be pretty much the same if you were to have those services using any other mobile device. Though I think that some of the services are only available through the iphone.

Apple doesn't exactly limit you in doing anything. The thing with just about anything apple is that what they have is some of the top of the line stuff for just about any type of consumer but the gaming market. There are currently several 3rd party software available for macs that let you do most of the basic stuff you can do on any other OS and in some cases more. When it's time to upgrade your hardware, it's time to upgrade your entire computer anyways. And if you need a right click for your mac, just buy a mouse that has one. Mac's can use them.
If you mean the limits on the iphone, most of that has more to do with the service provider than the actual iphone I think.
I'm not going to get into the Apple wars, cause I'm not even a mac user. But if you actually try to use it, there are so many cool things you can do with apple's products, more than you'll ever really need to(which for the average user goes with just about any recent OS distribution). The only people I wouldn't recommend an apple product to are gamers or people who are looking for more features on an mp3 player.
^really though I agree with asmo, and don't plan to get either. But I still would choose the iphone over a blackberry or plam pilot if my service provider allowed it. But unless I change providers, the iphone isn't really an option.
it's pretty much an iphone clone, but looks alot more appealing for my uses. The price is pretty nice too compared to the iphone, the only problem I see with it is that I'll probably have to import it if you want it here. But all these products would probably be obsolete by the time I can get any of them :lol:

So anyone can confirm that it's not true? I want to be safe before I buy one

To somewhat nitpick: graphic cards (always) require programs to run, so yes, they need CPU also (to run the driver itself for example)
It might be they have a standard 'fillin the blanks' form to put articles up, and someone just filled the CPU.

I think what they're trying to say is, you wouldn't bother with any cpu that's less than a Core 2 Duo if you're going to get a 9600gt
The card will run fine with any cpu that is also compatible with a motherboard that has PCI Express. (both LGA775 or AM2)
So as long as your motherboard has got the slot, the card will run. If your cpu happens to be some slowass Celeron or something, the card will still run but you wasted your money on it cause games will probably be slow from the CPU being crap.

I have a PCIe slot (also PCIe graphic card) so the card should work I guess.
So it will probably not run as good/fast as it could with my p4 (3ghz) but as long as it works it's okay. I can upgrade the motherboard, cpu and ram later, I just don't want to get an older graphic card now because I would want to buy a new one too soon so I would end up paying twice.
About the bugs... wth? :O I hope they fix that soon~ but it won't affect me that much hopefully since I actually don't play much at all. I just noticed that my old 6600GT can't run new games properly anymore after seeing some game on my brother's new pc :lol: it made me feel like I need to get a new card.

You know, it sounds more like a faulty card. You should get it replaced. I've used a 9600gt before and it was flawless.
The cards shouldn't be any different from other nvidia cards and should work fine with any game that something like an 8800gt can run. (which I have and it runs everything)
You should test the card in another PC just to be sure.
Actually, what OS are you running? Try just XP 32bit

well you can probably wash them, but you can't use warm water or put it in the drier.
I actually don't think they look bad at all :lol: the red stitching it pretty nice. Wouldn't wear them though since I like my jeans pretty tight, and that keyboard would probably be uncomfortable.
The people hating on the design are probably just jealous cause they couldn't rock them without looking like an idiot.

Does anyone here use ATOK (http://www.atok.com/) for inputting Japanese, as apposed to the usual Microsoft IME??
Noticed all the PCs at school were now using ATOK, and even my cell phone uses it.. Yesterday, I went to type "ラブx2" on my phone, and when I inputted "らぶ" it gave me a long list of words I might be typing, which included "LOVE PSYCHEDELICO". Pretty cool!! So then I tried some other names such as "うただ”, and straight away it came up "宇多田", choose that, then it suggested "ヒカル" as my next word.. Smart!! Thinking I'll grab ATOK for the PC now, and have a decent play with it..

IME has something like "basic kanji" and "names kanji", whereas ATOK also has "businesses", "addresses", etc, and includes English translations..
Not that handy for someone like myself, but can see why school has changed over though..

Since Apple products seem to be a bit over priced most of the time, I'm sure there are cheaper 1gb players from other brands. I know creative has some really cheap low end players from the muvo series and zen stone which is similar to the shuffle.

That makes two :) I'm currently using a bigger MP3 player with blue-tooth but it does have problems with the player being in the back-pack. A small clip-on player would do the job, but I thought the shuffle could not play a playlist sequential??

But the Stone has no clip (unless you add the plastic cover which still makes it way less expensive then the Shuffle)

Just got back from the Mediamarkt. I checked out the Creative ZEN Stone. The price is right, but it also looks cheap. Not that I'm into fashion or anything, but still..
The Shuffle does get better slightly reviews than the Stone. Especially regarding battery life. They say the shuffle has crappy headphones, but I'm gonna use different ones anyway so that's not a problem.
I don't really need one until September, but so far I'm leaning towards the shuffle. Even though it's a lot more expensive. In the long run it seems like a better deal..

I'm using it more then an hour a day, so if it drains the batteries fast I will notice it. I did replace the ear-plugs with some in-ear sony's I already had. It actually had a firmware update available so put that on. I considered the Shuffle (its about the smallest you can get) but the 2GB price, and iTunes makes it not such a good deal.

The quality of creative's players I think usually is pretty equal with of apple's players except, but I think the price difference is big enough to outweigh any drawbacks it has over the shuffle(such as the few millimeters in size and battery life). And according to cnet, the sound quality of the zen is better than the shuffle's.
I guess if you need more than 8 hours of battery life a day.
If we're talking about design though, I hate them both and personally wouldn't get either :lol: But that's cause I am into design and stuff >_>

So design-wise which (clip-on!) MP3-player would you choose?
actually design-wise for smaller flash players I think the 1st gen ipod nanos were some of the best :lol: so anything similar I would choose, but those usually don't come that cheap and don't come with a clip :/
But if you mean between the two, I'd get the stone with a clear skin and clip. I've never liked that plastic sparkley look of the lower end ipods.

Two days later (about 6 hours of use) and its still running on the first battery, but it does have only one of the 3 bars left (although it has that a long time already) So, its not done after just a few numbers, but I do think the cost of batteries during its use-time will offset the price of one with a re-chargable battery, I'll have a look at the ZEN stone this weekend.

Picked up the 2G shuffle today :)
I travel more than 3 hours every day to get to school and back home again, so my parents paid for it! "To keep me motivated" :lol:
I'm putting some songs on it right now. We'll see how I like it in a couple of days. So far so good.
edit: Filled it up with 255 songs @ 1.6 gig. so far.
The earphones are actually much better than expected. I may not even need the headphones I initially wanted to get for it.

I'm using SONY MDR-EX71's, very small in-ears. They have a connection coard that can be split so its shorter, very usable for the clip-ons or those that hang around your neck.

Okay, I've been trying for the past two days now to no avail...anyone know of a GOOD host where I can host an SMF forum for free? x10 seemed about the best there was since they offered cPanel for free but even going for the highest package left the page blank 9 times out of 10 once the forum was uploaded. A nice reliable one would be cool, and a simple one...I'm a n00b when it comes to shit like this so cPanel was perfect...I can't see me finding another host with free cPanel but you never know...

works for me. Just tested it. A terminal window should open after you click "START OSX Firefox" and then firefox should open a little after. Maybe the ones over there are blocking it from opening somehow. Any other version of it won't work unless the mac has darwine installed.
Just tested it with darwine and it's very unstable. You'd have to run the older version on a mac

Yep. The one I usually use is obviously the Windows version, so I specifically got this other version for the specific times when I'm on a Mac. /me shrugs
Shaping up to be a REALLY slick OS. Works great on my 5 year old Athlon XP computer. It's like all the cool new stuff and features of Vista with the resource usage of XP. Very nice! :D

So, replaced two older machines that are doing the majority of the downloads with one machine and a virtual machine: - 4GB: twice the amount of RAM (partly needed for the VM) - 2* 500GB disks: twice the amount of diskspace (with half the amount of drives) - C2D@2,1GHz: twice the amount of processor power (loading large newsgroups was getting slow)
And the main reason to do this: - less then 80W/hour of power used: half the amount of the previous two machines!

With the official beta being this great quality, I think I am officially sold on Windows 7. Microsoft, may I request: Two editions only, please. Home and Pro is more than enough. Also, don't charge 400 for Pro. >_>
The memory management could be a little better IMO, but it flies on my Core 2 Duo E8400, and runs well even on my AMD Athlon XP 2600+ system. And as you can see below, I am VERY demanding of my computer to do only the highest end tasks. Yeah... that's right, render those bitches. :twisted:

Well you can always downgrade if you want, or if the hardware is compatible and you don't need a certain windows only software, go Linux!
And then if you want windows again, you can always get 7 when it's finally released.
But really if you have a fast enough cpu and 2gb of ram, Vista should be fine after some fine tuning.

Honestly, I've avoided Vista simply from a lack of need. I own a copy of XP and it does all I ask. Vista offered little of interest to me, though I do like aspects of the interface. Although... while it is a badly designed OS, I've yet to see this horrible, BSoD'ing system that some people and those crappy Apple commercials make it out to be. It can be with bad drivers, but most people I know that use it seem to use it without issue these days. Either way, it's good that Windows is moving on to something that could be really good. 7 offers improvements to my computing experience, thus my enthusiasm for it. :)
And also, for laptops going from Vista to XP, make sure you can find drivers before buying( ;) ) a copy of XP for it. Some models do not offer XP drivers at all.
And while I'm posting here, I thought I'd gloat a bit and say as of Friday, I am an Apple Certified Macintosh Technician! :D I'm not sure how much I'll get to do (I got it for work mostly), but here's some guts of a white MacBook. Over 9000 screws. :shocked

I didn't see an anime rant and rave thread, so, I think this is most fitting.
As a huuuuuuuuge fan of the FMP anime, this makes me want to hang myself. :bleed eyes: Full Metal Panic is absolutely 100% one of the shows that just will not be handled well. It's too wacky, over the top, the humor is totally Japanese, and the plot itself is just a little too unbelievable to be told in a live action feature. And Zach Efron as Sousuke? How about we get Raven Symone to play Kaname and Miley Cyrus to play Tessa while we're at it. :k-crazy: Hopefully this gets lost in pre-production like most of these adaptations. Personally, I refuse to believe it exists.

In the front row we have 19 1TB drives (13 WB's standing, 2 newer WB's and 4 Verbatim's stacked), which contain the same as the stacks of DVD's behind them. No Compression!
Each stack is about 125 DVD-cases, but a lot of them contain 2 disc's and the right 4 stacks are mainly Series, which most of the time in the size of 2 normal boxes contain 6 Disc's.
So...I have no real idea how many DVD's there are :), only that its almost 19TB :D (I guess its about 1300 normal DVD's boxes and 200 DVD-boxes)
At the top middle is a set of HD-DVD (and two Blu-Rays) that are also dumped to the HD's. At the top left is a set of spindles with 350 DVD's that contain self-made copies of Video tapes and laser discs (those are not in the shot). The short left stack is almost all DVD-Singles (some older MM concerts where boxed in that format also)

It was actually shifting a few milimeters per hour, looks like the bottom part could not handle it :) They are al now back in the racks that is actually behind them (the top row is on the racks) but with two rows per shelve... there is room for a few hundred more.
I started this early March 2008, so it took me more then one year to copy them (I spend a few months in between to rip 166 LP's they are on there also in Audacity capture and WAV format)

I don't collect Transformers anymore thanks to a lack of room and funds, but man, either the inner kid in me is dead, or they've made these toys SUPER hard to transform. Probably just me, once I found out what I was doing wrong it was super easy. Also, I see that the instruction are worthless, as they were years ago. :lol:
In other news, can someone recommend me a decent digital camera? I only got a couple of features I want: -5 or 6 megapixel MAX -No XD picture card system (they crapped out on me a couple of times) -decent zoom options -long battery life -I'm not interested in making videos, just photos. -preferably no Olympus
Any suggestions are welcome :)
edit: did some quick research and it's pretty much impossible to find a camera with less than 10 MP.. wtf!

well if you're looking for something relatively new, you most likely won't find one that low in megapixels. Why do you want to stay that low anyways?
I always recommend Panasonic's compact digital cameras because of their Leica spec lenses. :P If zoom is a priority, they have their TZ or SZ(in the US) series cameras.

I want to stay low in megapixels because I am convinced they offer superior photo quality. Camera's with like 12 MP tend to have a lot of 'noise' in the pictures, where black turns grey etc. Ah well, I guess there are loads of variables which make for a good or bad photograph.

That's cause of the lens used on the camera. It mostly affects the smaller cameras with the smaller lenses cause it has a harder time taking in light from darker areas. You should be fine with anything lower than 12 as long as you stay away from super compacts. A general rule of thumb, the smaller your lens the more noise you're probably gonna get.

Yeah, my little Canon powershot A590 gets a lot of noise in less-than-ideal light. Does the job for me though. :) But yeah, go bigger and that's not really an issue. At my work, our yearbook staff has some larger but not super expensive Canon's(dunno the model though, sorry), and they take pretty amazing pictures.

Lately I've been disappointed by Firefox 3.0's speed compared to other browsers, but when I was on my AX vacation 3.5 came out. I never got around to checking out the RC's but installed the final release tonight. WOW, good job Mozilla! :twothumbs I wouldn't say it's as fast as Chrome but it is MUCH MUCH better.

Don't ask me how, but it somehow works really good just sitting there like that. I can get 4 out of 5 bars and before it was only getting 2 bars maximum. (I don't really think the antenna design does anything XD it's probably just a fluke position that it's in that makes it work well.)
This is a pretty good speed, I'm actually quite surprised with the upload speed as this is faster than my ADSL from my old house XD

Yep it's foil, the antenna is actually in a perfect position, if I move it anywhere else even out in the open just 2m away it loses all it's bars. So it's staying in this spot until I get a real antenna and some longer cable to run to it lol.

So overnight the Twitter apps on my Touch went kaput due to "API over limit" or whatever. Desktop apps seem to work but last I checked my Tweetie and Tweetdeck were still conked out.
I'm not sure Twitter has even addressed this issue, even though people all over the world are screaming WTF! (even in other languages -- I can tell). How's it going now?

My network provider finally decided to roll out the Android 2.1 update to HTC Hero handsets. Not the most user friendly process, it's not like a system update for an iPhone where you just press a button and it's done, I had to download a new ROM to the mobile first from the HTC website which deleted everything I had except for stuff that was on my SIM card. Contacts, apps, all gone. Took me about 2 hrs to do that, install the new system and reinstall my apps. But it's worth it though. The phone's almost like brand new, as it's easier to use, the marketplace is updated and best of all, Google Maps. Very handy.

Yeah, Windows Phone 7 will be a strong contender once it matures. It's already good straight out of the box, but hopefully they can start releasing updates for it to bring it up to par with iPhone and Android phones. Makes me wish I led a life where I actually had use for a smart phone, but I don't get out enough for that to be the case. :(

Stanford has been offering portions of its robotics coursework online for a few years now, but professors Sebastian Thrun and Peter Norvig are kicking things up a notch (okay, lots of notches) with next semester's CS221: Introduction to Artificial Intelligence. For the first time, you can take this course, along with several hundred Stanford undergrads, without having to fill out an application, pay tuition, or live in a dorm.
This is more than just downloading materials and following along with a live stream; you're actually going to have to do all the same work as the Stanford students. There's a book you'll need to get. There will be at least 10 hours per week of studying, along with weekly graded homework assignments. The professors will be available to answer your questions. You can look forward to a midterm exam and final exam. If you survive, you'll get a certificate of completion from the instructors, along with a final grade that you can compare to the grades of all those supersmart kids at Stanford.
You won't technically earn credits for the course unless you're a Stanford student, but for all practical purposes, you'll be getting the exact same knowledge and experience -- transmitted directly to you by none other than two living Jedis of modern AI. Thrun, director of the Stanford AI Lab, led the team that won the 2005 DARPA Grand Challenge, and, more recently, he helped develop the Google self-driving car. Norvig, a former scientist at Sun and NASA, is now director of research at Google and co-author of the leading textbook on AI.
Here's how it will all work: Anyone can sign up for the course online. It starts on October 2nd and lasts 10 weeks. Each 75 minute lecture (there are two per week) gets videotaped and chopped up into 15 minute chunks that you can stream whenever you want, and homework, quizzes, and exams are all digitized and completed over the internet. Professor Thrun gave us a few more details:
Grading will be automated. But we are recording video specifically to help students who got the answers wrong. We will use the exact same questions for everyone, including the Stanford students. In this way we can actually compare how well everyone is doing.
We will use something akin to Google Moderator to make sure Peter and I answer the most pressing questions. Our hypothesis is that even in a class of 10,000, there will only be a fixed number of really interesting questions (like 15 per week). There exist tools to find them.
As of yesterday, which is only the third day that the course has been available, over 10,000 students are already signed up, and since enrollment is open until September 10th, it's entirely possible that a couple hundred thousand people could end up taking this course. Sounds daunting, but professor Thrun is optimistic about the whole thing:
I am very excited. Teaching many students online has always been my dream. This quarter I get to affect more students than in my entire career before. And yes, we are already beyond my expectations, just 3 days in.

Noticed my computer getting sluggish and unresponsive recently when switching browser tabs. (I usually have lots and lots of tabs open at once) I do the normal virus/malware scans, disk cleanup, registry cleaning, the works. Nothing really helps.
Then I took a look at my memory usage and noticed it was constantly at around 80% used out of 2GB.
So I thought to myself, "Aha! The OS must be going to the page a lot!" and so I bought 4GB more. Now I'm sitting on 6GB of ram, 34% used and there's no sign of the previous unresponsiveness. Problem solved!

Played a little with Crazy Talk, it's a program like the PhotoSpeak app. Makes a person's face in a photo move.
So what did I try first with it? Go all nerdy and make a photo of Yukirin sing, of course. :sweatdrop: i'm helpless.

Just tweaked the face points, removed the extra lip movement (since it treats music as talking), set an emotion (like happy or angry), and add a little blinking. Course, it could all be tweaked and timed right to look a little more natural. And I'm pretty surprised how much extra stuff I could edit in it.
So it's a good timewaster just like PhotoSpeak, but with more options.

14 December 2011—Quantum computers have the potential to solve seemingly intractable problems in no time flat. But a big stumbling block on the path to practical quantum computing is figuring out how to observe the tiny quantum signals that drive computation. In an advance that may make that observation easier, a group at Aalto University, in Finland, has created a new kind of microwave amplifier based on a mechanical resonator—essentially a nanometer-scale tuning fork.
“When you have microwave signals on the level of a single quantum, you can’t manipulate them with your bare hands—you need to amplify the signal,” says Francesco Massel, a postdoctoral researcher at Aalto who worked on the device. But today’s amplifiers boost those signals at a cost, sometimes drowning them out with noise from the amplifiers themselves. “Our device adds, at least in principle, the minimum possible amount of noise dictated by the laws of quantum mechanics,” says Massel.
Other designs for such amplifiers rely on rarefied superconducting circuits called Josephson junctions, but they can’t promise as clean a signal boost as the Finnish amplifier. The Aalto group is the first to use a mechanical resonator, an idea they stumbled upon by chance. About a year ago, some group members were trying to cool a mechanical resonator, and while tweaking the system they noticed that it amplified microwave signals under certain conditions.

Mind the Gap:The Aalto amplifier consists of a meandering microwave cavity coupled to an aluminum resonator. The two components are separated by a gap just a few nanometers wide.
In the new amplifier described tomorrow in Nature, two elements are coupled together: a microwave cavity (a sort of mirrored, walled maze for electromagnetic waves) and a mechanical resonator (a suspended flexible aluminum beam). Only a tiny gap separates the mechanical resonator and the optical cavity; etched by a focused beam of ions, the gap is just 6 to 13 nanometers wide. “It’s one of the keys to the amplification,” says Massel. “The smaller the separation, the higher the coupling between optics [the cavity] and mechanics [the resonator].”
When the microwave cavity is hit with a strong microwave signal (called the pump), radiation pressure from the microwaves reduces the damping of the resonator, allowing it to vibrate with less resistance. When a second microwave signal—the one intended for amplification—hits the cavity, the resonator’s reduced damping lets the beam amplify the signal. This belongs in so many different threads, but I decided to post it here o_o;;;
Felicia Day and Wil Wheaton are both in on something called Geek & Sundry, it's an online community that's all about web videos about comics, books, games, hobbies, and other geeky things. They have a bunch of different shows, but Wil Wheaton is hosting one that premieres April 2, and it really tickles my fancy. It's about board games.
He gets together with other geeky celebrities, and they play board games. Having seen Wil Wheaton in action playing D&D, I have a feeling this will be amazing fun. Check out the trailer!
So, replaced two older machines that are doing the majority of the downloads with one machine and a virtual machine: - 4GB: twice the amount of RAM (partly needed for the VM) - 2* 500GB disks: twice the amount of diskspace (with half the amount of drives) - C2D@2,1GHz: twice the amount of processor power (loading large newsgroups was getting slow)
And the main reason to do this: - less then 80W/hour of power used: half the amount of the previous two machines!
:thumbsup for advances in electronics!
Stumbled accross this, 3 years later: current config is using SSD drives (3: 480GB + 120GB + 100GB, could not find another 480GB+ in time). Also replaced the case with a smaller one and it contains now a 80% effeciency power supply. Net result? Power usage is now less then 60W/hour! :cow: I will never earn the cost back with the saved power :rofl: but what the heck, its FAST in repairing rar's and requires less ventilation and produces less noise.

To the left is the main computer (temp storage and it runs the virtual machines) it's the smallest case I could find that holds a micro ATX board (from Antec). To the right of that: 3 QNAP TS-412's and a TS-212 holding a total of 14 3TB drives. Net storage: 39TB (no I did not use it all yet :)) )
Result: all my Movies, Music and Series DVD's are now available without leaving the chair I sit in :thumbsup (a couchpotatos dream :rofl:)

I had a 2600 back in the day. I've never seen a 7800 in person (though I recall seeing the box gathering dust in the high shelf of Toys R Us when I was a kid.
I still wish I had bought a Turbo Graphx 16 when they were $50 though.

Anyone here have experience with Falcon Northwest?
I'm planning to get a new PC once my student line of credit is paid off (March or April probably), and at this point it seems easier to just buy rather than build myself and have to go through the RMA process for stuff that doesn't work.
EDIT: Intel's new Haswell chips and Z87 motherboards, the new GeForce 780GTX, and my tax return all coincide in March/April. I think that's a pretty clear sign from the tech-scheduling gods that I should get my rig then.

it's still only affording the same amount of pci-e lanes as z77 (1x 16 or 8/8) but it will allow 2 more usb 3.0 ports and 6 total sata 3 ports if I remember correctly. Hardly worthwhile to upgrade for me. Ivybridge-E should prove more interesting.

^ Ha, a single button for such a action (under DOS it immediately rebooted your system!) would require a protective cover or something to prevent accidental use. Having a low-level officially not interceptable keystroke combination for security is not a bad thing. To log-on you always pressed it to make sure you had a login-screen instead of a fake picture thrown on the screen by some virus/Trojan.
And for some reason I have never used it to unfreeze IE or Word a.f.a.i.k., although I have used it to start the task manager to kill full-screen not behaving programs.

Well when it first came out it was something innovational but now it has become part of the mainstream and with anything mainstream you need knockoffs to get people buy into it. i spend a lot of time years ago on that. still i can handle the basics, but many knowledge is forgotten... a few months ago i tried an own mission-task, wich was to get morning musume to a moonbase for a concert.
every aspect of that mission worked out well in training scenarios, except of calculating a good trajectory to the moon for TLI from an 7000km altitude circular orbit. i might give it a try in the future again...
mission steps were:
1. delta glider with 4 passenger seats and cargo load from cape canaveral to a fictive giant transporter waiting at near equatorial orbit. unload 4 momusu members and cargo, undock, reentry, landing at CC refuel & new cargo & new members (repeat this step until you got all kameis and gakis etc aboard the transporter.
2. perform trans-lunar-injection with the transporter when all members are aboard.
3. mid course correction maneuvre to reach desired inclination and perigee altitude.
4. when at perigee burn retrograde for a circular moon orbit.
5. take a delta glider, previously docked at the transporters bay to place a landing-signal-beacon for the transporter
6. let the transporter perform automated landing
7. unload momusu at the base to perform a concert. play your fave tracks....
8. get back to earth, land the members safely at cape canaveral via delta glider (transporter is NOT designd for atmospheric flights!)
!: takes abot a week or so....all worked in my training scenarios but a didi not manage to compute a TLI from a 7000km earth orbit. dunno what went wrong.... !: don't let following pics fool you. this ain't a game. its real physics simulation. !: when using ummu add-on all passengers will have vital functions. so turn up the heating. and oxygen is 21%!!!! DONT MESS THIS UP when u got mame abort!!! AND BE CAREFUL WITH THAT AIRLOCK! HELL....! !: NO! u cannot shoot sth in this.... !: you cannot imagine how satisfying this is when doing the magic with the numbers for hours, and in the end all works fine! flying 100.000 of km with pin-point accuracy. pretty hard to start, i know, but when you can handle it all it is just awesome!

Livne got tired of not being able to send texts or emails on his own ever since he lost control of his limbs, so when he saw the app developer on TV demonstrating a game controlled with head gestures, he challenged Oded to make a hands-free phone with him.
As you've likely guessed, the technology was created not only for quadriplegics, but also for people with ALS, cerebral palsy, severe Parkinson's or arthritis or Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, and Multiple Sclerosis, among other illnesses -- mainly, for those who don't have full control of their hands anymore. Anyone interested can get a Sesame phone package (a Nexus 5 that comes with the Sesame software out of the box) through its Indiegogo campaign by pledging at least $350. Its creators are trying to raise $30,000 from the campaign in order to put finishing touches on a final working prototype and to bring it to production. If all goes well, those who pledged for the device will get their package as early as March 2015.

Wow, and I always thought that 'VY Canis Majoris' was the biggest known star, but it only placed 11th on the list of the red supergiants. ten more wich are 'insignificant' bigger.
'UY Scuti' claims the throne with at least 1.708 time the radius of our sun. in its lowest circumference it would even swallow jupiter, when placed in the center of our solar system. it's highest circumference (1.3 billion kilometers) would be close to saturn, wich orbits the sun in a distance of 1433,5 Mio. km!

planning to bring my Morning Musume Vinyl Records to the Teldec-museum in a small town in germany, wich is also known as the city of records. Teldec started as Telefunken in the 20ies of the last century. during WWII they released stuff like the Horst Wessel Lied, wich was an SS-march song. Later they merged with the british Decca company, and released stuff like italo disco, wich i still love to listen to today.
That museum has all the cool old stuff, even HMV grammophones, but you cannot play vinyl on that cause they use steel-needles, and are made for shellac only!
But i'd really love to play some Furusato from that old Bingo Box, or another device!
If i can do it soon, i'll make some pics or even a clip.
And at the end of the day i am planning to take the MoMuSu vinyl back home again! they won't stay there :lol:

no, no, the following text is not about Jesus Christ infected by a Xenomorph, even though that could lead to a kind of a funny story, no, i want to take a closer look on the Sevastopol station from Alien: Isolation.
Sevastopol sounds very familiar doesn't it? Yes indeed, many of you may know the Ukrainian seaport located on the Crimean Peninsula on the black sea called Sevastopol, traditionally called Sebastopol. The name Sevastopol has a greek origin, in greek: Sebastúpolis (Σεβαστούπολις) and it is a compound of the greek words 'sebastos' wich means 'Saint' or 'Majesty' and the word 'polis' wich can be translated as 'city', the 'City of the Majesty' so to say. But wich majesty is meant here? Not an Ukrainian one for sure. They chose the name 'Sevastopol' because with it's Greek origin the word sounded fucking awesome, right? RIGHT!
So we'll have to look for a different city, a much older one, with the same name. And i give you a name: 'Samaria' ok, doesn't sound like 'Sevastopol' at first, but wait for it! The ancient city of Samaria was to be found in the ancient Kingdom of Israel, located in the Samarian Land and founded 876 b.C. by the israelite King Omri. Today central palestine, near the city Nablus. Centuries later King Herodes named this city 'Sebastos', wich as said before means 'Saint' or 'Majesty', to honour the first roman emperor called Augustus. So, now the ancient city once called Samaria is now called 'Sebastos'. Another fact is, that after he left Nazareth, a man named Jesus Christ had a well known encounter with a women who went to a fountain in Samaria to get some water. Because Jesus stayed for 2 days and talked a lot, many people of Samaria, called Samaritans, believed that he is the true son of god.
And with Jerusalem, Samaria was one of the first outposts were a christian community had been formed. Looking back on the Ukrainian city wich is famous for it's black-sea-port, i want to mention, that the Sevastopol Station in Alien Isolation is not a space-port, but an outpost. And with that the circle becomes full.
Samaria > Sebastos > Sevastopol

There is an article that came out on Friday somewhere that mentions the recording was done over several hours because the machines needed repairs continuously. And having people inside these small things while fighting... no, as that first pushover showed not a good thing.
Still we might get to Pacific Rim Level someday.

^ Not into 'flogging' but more then 2 years ago I already had a USB stick sized camera. I used it to do POV takes of n-scale trains riding around.
This looks like is a lot more expensive (probably because of the buss word 'flogging'?) OK is may be 4K now instead of 1080 but that's two years of progress.
