Finally, I upgraded from my Nokia 2100 ($25 resale price, after 3 years) and got a Treo 650.  I love it.  $345 for used one in mint condition + leather case from craigslist.

Cheap plan + Unlimited data only costs $50 a month, and I can post to jphip from the coffee shop.  I have truly gone to heaven.  Next upgrades: Invisible Shield body protector, and a 2GB SD card.  I thought I would want a SDIO WiFi card, but with unlimited data, who needs it.  Only bummer is that all the good essential software (voice dialling, mp3 ringtones) costs money...

I finally upgraded from my Thinkpad T23 (nearly 5 years old!) to a Thinkpad R52.  1.86Ghz, 15" display, DVD/CD-R drive, and 512MB upgraded to 1.5GB of RAM.  The entire thing cost about $615 in flawless condition off ebay, along with a useless laptop bag and even more useless dock.  The RAM upgrade cost me about $50.

The only thing this thing lacks is Bluetooth and IEEE 1394/Firewire.

I got a new toy :P
(http://img99.imageshack.us/img99/2433/zenho6.jpg)
Creative Zen Vision:M
I'd been debating on this or an Ipod, with each one having it's list of pros and cons making it really tough to decide.
But when I went to the shop and had a look at the Zen and tried it out, basically one thing sold it. DivX, Xvid, Mpeg1/2, WMV basically copy and paste and the thing plays them. KICKASS! I put on my Rika OPV and it just PLAYS!!! Just like that!(http://img166.imageshack.us/img166/1152/rikaopvonzenci5.jpg)

Screw Ipods and converting all your vids to h264 just to play them.

Anyway, I'm still in process of testing all it's features. One of it's downfalls would be the battery life though. It's been tested to only last about 7hours playing music so. Meh that's plenty for me anyway.
I'm just so impressed it plays divx and xvid so well. I can watch Prison Break at work or something stupid like that lol. Even though I could just it on computer at work >.>

The earphones are pretty crappy but I got some Ultimate Ears coming in the mail soon to replace them :D

Here's another pic of a dorama, you can even read the hard subs :D

HARDCORE GEEK SHIT EBC!! I been eyeing a Hard Drive video cam myself for future trips. How many minutes can it record?? And it looks really compact so you can put it in your hat and film the concert!!

and hmm...ya sold me on a Zen too. And it's smaller.
Title: Post the latest Geek/Nerd stuff that you bought
Post by: ebc on December 04, 2006, 11:19:19 AM
lol not quite daigong XD it's a bit big to fit in a hat and I don't think I wanna risk getting caught with it, who knows what they'll do to it so no taking to concert XD
The harddrive can record anywhere from 11 to 7 hours of video depending on the quality you use.
The battery that comes with it is just a newb one though and i ordered a decent 230minute battery to use in it so I don't run out too quickly.

Ok here's a small demonstration.

http://www.eyeballcancer.com/rika/hddemoflower.avi

I encoded it to 1024x576 Xvid so everyone can play it properly.
Unfortunately though, the framerate doesn't do it justice and I would like to deinterlace and ouput to 50fps (this is pal remember)
But it's kinda difficult to do with these interlaced h.264 files cause there's no proper filters to handle the decoding. I'm just importing to avisynth with directshowsource. Which does work but it brings the frames in already deinterlaced and blended to 25.
I'll have to do a bit more mucking around to see what I can come up with.

I'd like to have one of those   and it's also a wide screen camera. I had a mini-dv videocamera with me last fall in Japan but had a lot of problems with it probably because of a high humidity -charged battery didn't last for a long time and I could took only 1-2 hours of video. I Haven't edited or watched it yet though.

Edit: scratch that, just saw a video review here: http://www.gottabemobile.com/GottaBeMobileHardwareInkShowTheNokiaN800InternetTablet.aspx

Not for me (like the previous version), not enough features compared to my PDA, and its not a phone by itself.

After having some problems with losing the protective cover for my 1GB USB drive, and realizing that it was about 80% full (mostly portable tools), I decided to upgrade.  Yesterday, I ordered the 4GB SanDisk Cruzer Micro USB Flash Drive (http://www.sandisk.com/Products/Item(1925)-SDCZ6-4096-SanDisk_Cruzer_Micro_4GB_Black__New.aspx).  It cost about $40 at Circuit City, which sounded like a pretty good deal considering it lists at about $100.  I got an e-mail saying it's been shipped, so hopefully I'll get it next week.  Maybe I'll try to install a bootable version of Linux on my old stick.  I'll just have to find some web sites that explain how to do it.

^ 4GB? Niiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiice. ;D  I've got 3 2GB Cruzers myself. Totally love them except for the fact that they have that software that they have to install on a computer in order to work. I've installed the software on my own comp, but I've managed to get them to work without installing it when I go from one comp to a different one. It's a bit of a pain, plus I don't think it's right to install programs on another person's comp if they're not going to use it themselves.

Post by: Dronak on May 27, 2007, 02:12:36 AM
Yeah, I know what you mean.  I'm not sure exactly what programs you're having trouble with, but I'd suggest looking into portable applications.  These are supposed to run straight from the USB drive without putting things onto the computer.  I can't guarantee that every program that says it's portable does this properly, but that's the idea at least.  Here are a few places to look at if you're interested.

http://portableapps.com/
http://www.theinfobox.com/index.php?title=Portable_USB_Apps
http://www.dailycupoftech.com/usb-drive-systems/3/
http://www.pendriveapps.com/
http://www.portablefreeware.com/

Some of these are collections that you can add to or subtract from to meet your needs and drive size.  Others just list programs, so you can pick whatever ones you want to use from them.  I hope this helps.

^ I hate those drives that emulate a CD-ROM and try to install (autorun) programs from it, like the U3 drive.
I actually went to the trouble and use TweakUI to disable all 'auto insert' things on XP.
(Hurray for Vista not doing this automaticly anymore)

Programs that run without additional setup are good thou.

damn, 4 pref a week?

my cellphone has JR suica (and just my luck they extended it for use on the metro too!) so every time i was in tokyo i used my cellphone to beep in and out of the subway/train gates. :) but unfortunately that's only for tokyo area, and PiTaPa doesn't (yet) work for most cellphones. ironically, if you have a standard suica IC card, you can transfer the balance to PiTaPa...

It's borderline 4.. I work in Nara (where I live), Mie, Hyogo and in a place which is between Nara & Kyoto..

My keitai has an IC chip too, but I've never used it, cause I just didn't see the point.. (last time I was in Tokyo, my keitai didn't even have a colour display..)

Sister-in-law's new Vaio has a built-in IC card reader.. Just know she's going to do some serious internet shopping with that..

This week I accidentally won a bid on some speakers on an online auction. I really wasn't expecting to win cause the bid was only $189 for these really nice looking speakers that usually go for over $1000. But anyway no one else bid on the ones I had (there was like 5 other sets of the same speakers)
and so I ended up winning the bid. Anyway shipping was $135 cause the damn things were 80kg lol. here they are

(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_speakers5_1.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/speakers5_1.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_speakers5_12.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/speakers5_12.jpg)

They are actually 6.1, there is another one the same as the center that is used for the rear. But I just left it in the box cause I can't drive it yet anyway.
The sub is powered so it runs straight from the output on the soundcard (it can run off an amp as well) But I only have an old stereo amp so I am only running the towers atm. But it sounds really really nice. I just have to save up a bit of cash and get a decent 5.1 or 6.1 amp.

Nice one Yui-chan

Me jealous too....

How much is a replacement bulb cost? Maybe 1k USD ? 2000 hours sounds like a lot but you really chalk up the hours on games u know?

Bulbs are $650 aus
I actually don't use it as much as I could. I don't play games on it that was just a one off thing to see how it would look.
It's really just for movies maybe once a week.

An LG M228WA 22" Monitor with built in TV Tuner. HD TV with DVI (rather than HDMI).

It has also all of the inputs you could ever want, makes PS2 games look great via components.

the Linksys EtherFast Cable modem
(http://image.compusa.com/prodimages/53/36d99f18-7653-11d6-a100-00805fbbb715.gif)
there's a lot of specs that i an list but the most important one is this
-Up to 42.88 Mbps Downstream and Up to 10.24 Mbps Upstream, Two-way Cable Modem
this makes it much more better than my previous cable modem.  especially when downloading torrent.  when i download torrent with my previous cable modem, it was really slow and affected my entire internet network, all others computer was slow as well. this changes all that.  cuz it's allow up to 10.24 Mbps of upstream (uploading)  which is what torrent is rite?  downloading and uploading at the same time.

Just bought this today:

HP DVD1040i

20X DVD-R and can do dual-layer.  Might not seem like normal to you guys, but my DVD-RW drive is many years old and could only do DVD-R at a max of 4x and had no dual-layer capabilities. x_x

^ I have mixed results with dual-layer, its pushing the limits of burners/players compatability because the transition is at the very edge of the DVD where writing is problematic anyway.

Haven't really seen it many times, but it has to do with that the software tries to set the laser power to the speed it it going to burn on (and fails) no idea if it is your drive that has the problem or the software is just reporting it wrong.

Bluetooth adapter. This one girl I know borrowed my USB cable in June and still hasn't returned it to me. I know, I know, I should just call her up and go get it from her. Considering that she lives almost 3 hours away though (in the city of Brandon, MB if anyone wants to look it up), and thus taking into account how rarely I see her, it's not likely gonna happen.

Correct, not a 'gamer' at all, I do strategy games sometimes but they are few and far between.
BTW, the Xbox seems to be very bad at upscaling DVD's, and makes even more noise then thisone. Also when finished, this will require only two cables to connect: power and HDMI (although it does have a network and USB ports)

Shooters should be mindless, not require repeating things over and over again to get to the next level... where you do the same (Don't need that, wolfenstein was enough)

Just ran 'The Matrix' (HD-DVD) thru it, wow, even connected with only component the detail and coloring is WOW :)

Until I go 'full HDMI 1.3', some new cables to connect the equipment to the TV:

Belkin 3m VGA to DVI cable (1.8m was to short, puts to much stress on the cable partly 'hanging' from the laptop to the TV):

(http://img87.imageshack.us/img87/5449/41s98xesnzlaa280gv8.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

4m Tara Labs Prism 100v Component Video cable, to connect the HD-DVD to the TV for now:

1) THe xbox is always loud.  When you're an xbox owner you just get used to it @___@
2) They should be mindless yet don't require repeating thigns over and over?  Those two statements contradict each other.  Mindless = doing the same thing over and over, usually

Just purchased a SanDisk Sansa E250 2GB without FM/AM-Radio (europe only) for 94 USD including shipping

I kinda bought it because my mobile phone wouldn't let me play for more than 8 hours, and do a full recharge each day kinda sucks. This one advertises 20h battery time and after 8h of work the battery wasn't even half-empty.
Or did I get caught by the Goto Maki commercial? Sure, I did actually think of it while browsing Ipod Shuffle which has a higher price (tarded) and that's how I started looking for the Sansa :)

^ They come built with 100meg of space, which is enough if you keep moving photos over to your PC, but if you don't, then yeah, 100meg won't last too long..

Have you been using the "au Music Port" to move things back and forth?? I've been cleaning up/updating my address book with it...So much faster than trying to do it with the phone..

I was tempted to get the same as yours, but decided to get the "all black".. Two tone just looked a little slapped together..
Title: Re: Post the latest Geek/Nerd stuff that you bought
Post by: Shumatsu Samurai on November 12, 2007, 11:34:52 AM
IMO, Music Port sucks when moving data to/from the phone but it's ok for the rest. (but it's a bit annoying that I have to convert all my audio files to m4a just for it to recognize them and that it will convert them again for DRM)

When I went to the TMS, I managed to take about 170 pics and 12 movies before it switched to extension mode, so a microSD is a must for me. It's 2GB so that I don't have to remove it so often but I prefer to just put the card in the PC directly and move everything without Music Port.
It's great but if you take a lot of pictures it shows it's (few) weaknesses. Must have a new camera for christmas - the old one can't compete with the phone...

I had an all grey boring Motorola before so I wanted a change.

Not using mine for music at all, but had to give it a try, since it was there..  :D  (Always have my ipod with me) And was pretty happy how it went.. Used the latest "RIZE" single, the CDDB (gracenote) found it straight away, and the program ripped it straight from the disc.. Had to put the cover art on myself..

You don't need to move the microSD card to the pc, you can set the phone to "mass storage" and access it via the usb connection, which will save you pulling it out all the time..
Settings -> User Support -> Data Comm

Oh, that's a thousand times better, thanks! I can just keep the media stand connected to the pc and create a shortcut on the standby screen.
(Maybe I should give the manual another chance but I suck at reading japanese...)

I tried ripping from a CD and it worked fine. Still sucks if I want to listen to stuff that I only have as (downloaded) files...
Usually I don't use it for music as well but since microSD cards are cheap and I always have the phone with me, I like that I can use it as a camera or music player as well if I forgot the others at home.

Good stuff there LaJon!

Those motherboards are really good! We run them in our games machines in the Internet Cafe at work and you can overclock really easily with them.

If you wanna set your ram timings manually, you gotta go ctrl+F1 when you're in the main page of the bios, then that unlocks the options in the menu where you change all the stuff like FSB and multiplyer (i forgot what the menu is called but you'll find it). I clocked an e4300 up to 3Ghz with default vcore on one of those boards. They're good!

Yeah, I'm definitely interested in overlocking with that mobo/cpu combo, but I've never done overlocking before.  What's safe for stock heatsink/fan? Or would it be worth it to grab a better one like a Zalman?

You might be able to clock it up to 2.8-3ghz without having to change the core voltage. When you start changing the core voltage, that's when you need to look at better cooling.

Tomorrow I'll see if I can take some pics of the bios and settings for you and guide you through overclocking your chip. :D

It should do 3GHz on stock volts and with the boxed cooler. With better cooler and more volts 3.6-3.7GHz if your chip isn't total crap. My E6600 did 3.7GHz.

When I was reading up on overclocking, it seemed like I could only go as fast as the type of the memory I have, or something like that.  What's that all aboot?

Dunno what you've been reading but you can use dividers which control the fsb/mem clock ratio and with them you can set the memory speed so that it wont prevent you from overclocking your cpu (in case if your mem speed would be too high). Probably on stock setting the mem divider will be upwards as the fsb on the E6600 is 266MHz and your mems stock speed is 400MHz (800MHz DDR). When you start overclocking I recommend setting the divider to 1:1 to keep the mem speed from raising too much. You will probably see the dividers in "DRAM frequancy" setting. When you find the maximum overclock and if you see that the mem speed is too low for you can again use the dividers to set the mem speed as close as the stock speeds or as high as the mem will overclock. You can test the memory overclocking by lowering the cpu divider to a point where the cpu clockspeed will not be too high.

In a nutshell: It's not likely that your memory will stop you from overclocking (expecting you will stay under 500MHz fsb range).

Never thought it would.  I was just getting confused about some overclocking things I've read, but I understand what it means now.  To use a ratio of 1:1, I could go as high as 400mhz for my CPU's FSB, which would give me speed 3.6ghz.  I'd like to get up to that point, but I'm hearing things about changing core voltage, so how does that come into play with all of this? (Sorry about being a bother with this, but I wanna know exactly what I'm doing before I screw up and ruin a processor)

You can change the cpu volts (=vcore) in bios. When the comp gets unstable after you have raised enough fsb you can start upping the vcore and see if that helps. Though if you use the boxed cooler I recommend not to give it a lot of volts cos the cpu temp will probably get too high. With a good cooler you can raise the vcore to about 1.6v if the cpu temp is not too high.

Ok, here's my awesome overclocking guide with pictures and stuff. You may want to print this out hehe

To start off with, you need to download some tools for monitoring and stress testing.
There's a lot out there but I like to use Orthos http://sp2004.fre3.com/beta/beta2.htm Because it will let you know if your cpu isn't stable without your whole computer shutting down. Usually people will run this overnight but you will usually see it fail in the first 5-10minutes if your cpu is actually not stable.

The other program is coretemp http://www.majorgeeks.com/Core_Temp_d5665.html Which is used to monitor the temperature of each core of the cpu. It's usually a lot more accurate than software that comes with the motherboard because it monitors the temps directly from the cpu heat sensors not the motherboard ones.

You can also get cpuz to show things different informations about your system etc http://www.cpuid.com/cpuz.php

Once you have all that, you can reboot and head into the bios.
(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/thumb_IMG_0062.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/IMG_0062.jpg)

With the new Gigabyte boards you have to unlock the area to set your memory timings manually and you do that by pressing ctrl+F1 in that main menu of the bios screen.

You can then go into the M.I.T menu at the bottom and you'll see a tonne of crap, this is where you overlock :D

The first option, I've just left it on auto cause to be honest I don't know if it really does anything lol.
To start overclocking though you need to enable the CPU host clock control
(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/thumb_IMG_0064.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/IMG_0064.jpg)
By default it should be 266 for the e6600 because 266.66 x 4 (DDR quadpumping) that is where you get your 1066mhz FSB from and overclocking is done by changing the FSB (or clock multiplyer if it is unlocked but in your case it isn't, although you can change it downwards but not up)

You can see that I've already changed mine up to 333, this will overclock my humble e6420 from 2.1something to 2.66Ghz. If you want start by setting yours to 333 that will overclock your cpu to 3ghz (of course you can go higher later on :D)

So the way that work is 9 x 333 = 3Ghz where 9 is the clock multiplier and 333 is the FSB (or value that controls the FSB the real FSB will now actually be 1333 instead of 1066)

Changing the value of the CPU host frequency is the basic step to overclocking, when you increase it you will notice another value also change, that being the memory speed. The memory speed is controlled by the Memory Multiplier and that is usually controlled by the SPD which is the information on the RAM itself that tells the motherboard what it's default speeds are. You can change these values though and you will mostly likely need to in order to get a stable memory speed.

The memory should be default as 800 however I'm using 667 but it actually runs at 800mhz fine with timings of 5-5-5-15 (worry about this soon)
(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/thumb_IMG_0065%7E0.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/IMG_0065%7E0.jpg)
You might notice that I've changed the ratio already from 4 (default ratio) to 2.4
If you leave it at 4, when you start increasing the FSB the memory speed will become too high for it to run (1333mhz). DDR800 can't run that fast though so you need to change the ratio down in order to keep the memory speed in a stable range. This is something you will need to kinda experiment with but try just making it a value close to your default memory speed for starters like 2.4 this should give you exactly 800mhz (333x2.4)
DDR800 can clock higher than 800mhz though depending on how good your ram is. It might be able to reach 900mhz higher.

One thing you will now need to do is tweak your memory timings.
(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/thumb_IMG_0066.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/IMG_0066.jpg)
Depending on what the timings are for your ram, usually they're written on the sticks somewhere but you will want to find out what they are and set them properly in the following 4 options.
Some ram will run at 4-4-4-12 at 800mhz (usually this is expensive stuff) But I think your ram will be something like 5-5-5-12
If you get too confused about this though you can just leave this option as auto hehe

Finally at the bottom is where you can change the voltages.
(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/thumb_IMG_0068%7E0.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/IMG_0068%7E0.jpg)
The default vcore is right at the bottom and is 1.35 to start with you can leave your vcore as normal as you might find your computer boots fine and is completely stable. However if it is not, the worst thing that will happen is that your computer won't post (turn on but nothing come up on screen)
Don't panic though, if this happens (which it probably will) just switch the power off to the computer completely and let it sit there a few seconds then turn it back on. The Gigabyte bios will reset itself and everything will be back to default values. IF it still doesn't post after pulling the power from it then you can clear the bios with the jumper on the motherboard, just check the manual to see where is it but from my experience you won't have to do this with your motherboard. They recover from failed overclocking attempts really well.

So if your computer isn't stable on normal vcore, you can try to bump it up a bit. You can see I've set mine to 1.45. I just picked this number out of the blue hehe but to be honest it's actually not going to increase the vcore much at all. That's because of a thing called vcore drooping. This is a problem where even if you give your vcore a new value there is sometimes up to .1 volts of "droop" that means the vcore will actually only be 1.35 anyway.
So in order to actually get your vcore up enough to make your cpu stable again, you need to set it to something usually above 1.45 but then again some boards don't suffer from as much vdroop as others so again it's something you'll have to experiment through trial and error with. I will warn you though, definitely don't put this value above 1.6 with your stock cooler hehe your cpu will get very hot XD

Ok then so once you've set everything to how you want it. You can save your bios settings and reboot and see if Windows works! Some things that can happen if it's not stable are basically, it will freeze on bootup, it might bluescreen, it might give some error message you've never seen before. In this case try going back into the bios and changing values accordingly. I would try upping the vcore a little more at first. For instance I had to put my vcore at 1.475 in order to get into Windows with my e6420 at 2.95Ghz

Once you are in Windows, start up coretemp and check your temps and start running Orthos
(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/thumb_IMG_0073.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/IMG_0073.jpg)

If your cpu starts getting up to 70c then it's probably not a good idea to run it for long and I think you should get a better CPU cooler. But under 70 I think is alright for a Core 2 Duo at full load.

If Orthos fails it is cause your cpu isn't stable at the speed it's at and you might need to de-clock it or up your vcore depending on what it's currently at.

And that's about it. I hope I covered everything. If you want to. Run 3Dmark06 before overclocking and write down your score then do it again after overclocking and see how much better it is :P

If you use Orthos to check the stability of the OC use small fft's settings as it stresses the cpu more than blend (this stresses ram and cpu). You can also use OCCT for testing. Remember that even if the cpu is Orthos/Prime stable for 10h it may fail in games. So it's important to do a wide benching to be sure that the cpu is stable.

OT. ebc, maybe you should hang out at Xtremesystems  ^-^

Well, at full load (Encoding a video, playing music in winamp, and bobbing a full resolution HDTV video at the same time), the temp was between 53-58C.  Gonna try my hand at some overlocking in a second, but do you guys have any recommendations for a CPU cooler?

Went up to 333mhz, so I'm running the CPU @ 2.99GHZ and that produces 63C as highest temp with the Orthos stress test.  I'd like to go up to the point where I can be using 400mhz since that seems to be the best with the current memory I have, but I don't wanna push it much further than this without getting a nice heatsink/fan.

Xigmatek HDT-S1283, Tuniq Tower, Coolermaster Hyper 212, Thermalright Ultra 120 Extreme... First three of those are pretty cheap compared to the TRUE which is about +60€ with a fan. I have the Xigmatek and I can recommend it  :)

Well, if I get one, Tuniq is looking like the best.  I've definately got the room in my case since it's a big server tower.  Just not sure if the speed I'd gain by overclocking it more would be useful for me to pay out $45.  We'll see e_e

You could try getting some Arctic Silver or something and reseating your stock cooler using that. (clean off all the stuff that came on the stock cooler, it's pretty crap)
That might keep your temps down and you could probably hit 3.4 with a bit more vcore.

But yeah good heatsinks cost a lot more than they're worth sometimes. Sometimes you don't even find yourself leaving your machine overclocked anyway cause it's fast enough just at stock speed XD

Just finished installing the Tuniq CPU heatsink/fan.  I have to say that it was BY FAR the hardest piece of hardware I've ever installed in a computer in my life.  I'm about to run Orthos to see what I've gained from getting this thing, and it damned well better be a mountain for what it took to install.  Just about every review on newegg complains about how hard it is to install, and I really should have listened, but it seemed like the best thing to get for price/quality.  :(

I think I need to lay down..

The Tuniq Tower 120 took off about 10-12C from the CPU temperature, which is pretty nice.  However, I need some help with the overclocking.  When I bumped it up to 400mhz to get 3.6Ghz and changed the memory multiplier to 2.0, but it was running just a little too hot.  I wouldn't mind giving 3.2Ghz or 3.4Ghz a try, but the menu for the memory multiplier jumps from 2.0 to 2.4, with nothing in between.  To get 3.2Ghz I moved it up to 355mhz, but the multiplier would need to be about 2.25 to match my RAM, and to reach 3.4Ghz I need to use 377mhz and a multiplier of 2.12.  Without being able to use these values, I have to overclock my memory (852mhz or 905mhz at the least for each clock speed).  How safe is it to do this considering the RAM is pretty warm with heatsinks on them already?  Otherwise, how can I get custom values added in?  Thanks for the help

Yeah it should be fine, if you manually set your timings to what your ram is meant to be by default that way it doesn't automatically use higher timings because it is detecting a non-standard clockspeed. You can run DDR800 at way over 900mhz even.
Yesterday I clocked an e6750 to 3.8 on stock cooler. The ram was running at 956mhz at this point lol.

I'm going to try 3.6Ghz once more before I stick to 3.4 or 3.2.  When I tried it last time, the fan inside the Tuniq heatsink was pointing the wrong way (blowing heat in, rather than out), so there was quite a bit of heat being kept in the area around the CPU/RAM.  Thanks for the info once again

If you leave the C1E setting on in the bios, (enhanced holt state) your cpu will be happy and cool and only run at full speed when you do something intense.

Picked the 7900GS today. Overclocks pretty well from stock 450/660 to 580/780.

HPdv9680ed:

(http://img511.imageshack.us/img511/7681/hppaviliondv9600entertazg0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

- 17" widescreen (1440x900)
- Intel C2D 1.6GHz
- 1GB RAM (upto 4GB)
- 160GB harddisk
- nVida 8400M GS
- 4USB ports, express slot, SD/MS/MSPro, network, wireless and modem.
- S-video, VGA port and HDMI ouput
- small remote control (which turns out also controlls my other HP a TabletPC)

Was actually on the hunt for a 9630 (120GB 1,5GHz C2D rest equal specs) but stumbled accross thisone for 1 euro less (although I'll need to buy a memory upgrade).

Not the fastest machine (wasn't going for that, wanted a cheap desktop replacement) but still several times better then my current desktop (a 2GHz Celeron) although I'll be missing the third screen for some time...

I need one of those. My 7900GTX is getting quite dated now. Games like Crysis really show it up. I've also only got a 2.14ghz Core2Duo, so I need to replace that with a Quad-Core this summer.

Added BluRay to the mix:

(http://img186.imageshack.us/img186/2389/e4b9013ee8ccb0f3c125739ju2.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

And I will not complain again about the load-times of HD-DVD, it takes a freaking 1 minute or so to load Idependence Day on this thing!!

No, didn't go for a high-end player yet, I only want something that should be able to play the AKB48 concerts that are on the way.
Later this year I'll see what gives with the HD formats.

Strange according to this newsitem: http://www.blu-ray.com/news/?year=2007

Independence Day Re-Announced for March 11th
Posted December 31, 2007 01:02 PM by Josh

Fox Home Entertainment has announced that the highly anticipated Blu-ray release of 'Independence Day' will hit store shelves on March 11th. The release was initially delayed due to compatibility issues with some players. It seems now that those issues have been resolved, and that the release is ready to be delivered into consumer's hands.

I shouldn't be having this BluRay Disc yet?? (it might explain the long loading time)

4 port HDMI switcher:

(http://img339.imageshack.us/img339/179/dsc00091lh5.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Wanted to try if I could trick the TV into doing HDMI via the DVI port
Didn't really work: the VGA to DVI to HDMI converter from the laptop didn't turn on the TV, and outputting 720p via the DVD-player also didn't produce a usable picture.

Time get a new TV (with HDMI in this time) and a laptop with HDMI out (like the one I'm using as desktop replacement) for playing videos...

I was getting sick of how my Motorola Bluetooth headset kept dangling on my ear like it was going to fall off, so I got this.
(http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9114/n5291164avc6.th.jpg) (http://img396.imageshack.us/my.php?image=n5291164avc6.jpg)  (http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/2280/n5291164eak6.th.jpg) (http://img396.imageshack.us/my.php?image=n5291164eak6.jpg)  (http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/3097/n5291164flx6.th.jpg) (http://img396.imageshack.us/my.php?image=n5291164flx6.jpg)

The ear bud fits nice and securely/snugly in my ear, so the lack of an "over the ear" hook doesn't look like it's going to be an issue. It was on sale, so even after I bought the optional 3-year warranty I only spent about $60. :thumbsup

d-link dir-655
(http://img89.imageshack.us/my.php?image=dir655vp3.jpg)

and it's about time I upgraded from my old one, which was a d-link di-524. that thing would drop connections every 10 minutes or so and when intense torrenting, would reboot probably from overheating (which is partly my fault cause of all the dust that collected around it >_> ). Online gaming was so bad as I'd disconnect so much. Haven't tested gaming yet but everything seems good.

Plus I could finally take advantage of the wireless n on the macbook. I get full signal in the farthest darkest corners of the house! And now I can stream vids from my pc with few hiccups. And can also take advantage of the gigabit ethernet from my pc and macbook, which I use to transfer files. Still need to do some other tests though.

Setup was fairly easy with a few un-plugging and plugging in of stuff. Took me a while to set up an ancient computer we still use to work with it, but I can't blame the router on that as I got it working by putting it back in default settings :P .

It's an awesome home router and for less than $100.

This was a gift from my wife, and I'm not sure how geeky/nerdy it is, but it's so cool that I thought I'd mention it -- Yamaha's YGP-635 digital piano (http://www.yamaha.com/yamahavgn/CDA/ContentDetail/ModelSeriesDetail/0,,CNTID%25253D5015193%252526CTID%25253D205200,00.html).  This is far better than the old electronic keyboard I had, and there's an optional three-pedal unit for it (that I plan to get eventually) that would make it at least equivalent to, if not better than, a real piano.

Thought I should post this geek item.

I didn't really need a laptop but there was this online shop recently doing a huge discount on this model (I checked and it was about wholesale price ex tax at that point) and then on top of that there is a $199 Acer cashback offer so I decided to go for it. It's a decent machine as well.

(http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_laptop.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/laptop.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/normal_laptop2.jpg) (http://www.eyeballcancer.com/gallery/albums/userpics/10001/laptop2.jpg)

Acer 6930G-863G32
Intel C2D P8600 2.4Ghz, 3gig of RAM, Geforce 9600m gs 512mb, 320gb hdd, 16" widescreen

After postage and cashback the total price was $1233. Retail is over $2000 although I saw one at Officeworks for ~$1700 Aus$

Can play games on it :P

As one of my labtops crapped out, I am in the market for a new (around 12") portable but haven't decided on one yet (might wait for W7 labtops) in the mean time I bought me this as a backup desktop machine:

ASUS Eee top PC (15.4" touchscreen):
(http://img134.imageshack.us/img134/2650/2290lhz4.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

I actually have the black one (with wired keyboard and mouse):
(http://img171.imageshack.us/img171/388/217120jpgas0.jpg) (http://imageshack.us)

Yes, it has a pen also.
Its the contents of a NetBook (1.6GHz Atlon, Intel 945 chipset) put behind a screen, with lots of USB ports (6!) and a SD cardslot.
I am currently running W7beta on it (runs very good!) and increased the memory to 2GB.

Oh, and its 599 euro here in Holland.

Title: Re: Post the latest Geek/Nerd stuff that you bought

It a nice little compact machine for a specific usage, with the processor its not a speed demon. And ASUS is delivering XP with it (so you get a maximum of 1GB and 160GB diskdrive)

Its very good as a second computer. The touchscreen works good and ASUS did set it up with the 'thick finger' interface activated (bigger window buttons and scroll bar).

I use it currently for ripping my DVD collection to HD, and it is actually faster with that then the laptop I used before that.
I like touch for some fast navigation, but very little programs are actually usable this way (you need bigger button for your fingers, then the pen comes in handy. ASUS set of programs is ok for finger use.
Vista's handwriting recognition is better then XP, but as said I am testing W7 on it.

Simply put: I like it as a second machine.

Check out my futuristic laptop! :pimp: I bought this from work. It's a Dell 600m, four years old but almost unused. Pentium M 1.5GHz and 256MB of RAM. My boss let me have it for 70 dollars. All it needs is a gig of RAM and it'll be a great little laptop. I'm quite happy with it. I've always wanted a laptop for the times I need one, but the times I need one are kinda rare so I couldn't justify spending hundreds of bucks for one. This thing'll be perfect once it gets that RAM for what I need it for.

I'm not sure how geeky/nerdy this is, but I just ordered a three-pedal unit for my Yamaha YPG-635 digital piano.  With this instead of just a sustain pedal, I'll have essentially a real piano . . . just electronic.  I'll have to find a slightly better place to put all of my music books now though -- they're currently on the floor in the same area the pedal unit is going to have to be installed.

I just bought a VisionTek ATI Radeon HD 4670 PCI Express Graphics Card (http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp?skuId=8992593&type=product&id=1218007083797), but only later do I found out on the internet that this product tends to overheat.  Now does anyone knows how do I go to prevent that?  I'm asking like how to set the settings either from the ATI Catalyst Center or BIOS?

@Datalanche: My sis got the same Dell Laptop, bought it used as well. Now my mom using it, but the charger been acting up, it charges sometimes, sometimes not.

There's really not much you can do settings-wise to bring your VGA temp down, other than maybe being conservative with the settings you run games with.  Just keep the comp cool and the card should follow.  Additionally, you can grab a third-party VGA cooler, or even a PCI slot case cooler to put next to it.  You can also get a program like Speed fan (Link (http://www.almico.com/speedfan.php)) to keep an eye on the temperature while you do gaming and all that to see how hot it's getting, and if it's in any danger of overheating.

Don't overclock it. Clean the fans for dust regularly. Don't put another card in the slot directly below it if you can.

I second the idea of speedfan if you're still worried - you should be able to set it to do an alarm if the temperature gets over a certain point.

Also, keep in mind some chips are designed to run at higher temps. Some mobo chipsets run regularly at 90 degrees celsius spec for example. It's only a problem if it exceeds the operating specs or melts the chip next to it.

you can probably under-clock it using some kind of tool... but then you sorta of lose the point of getting a good vid card.

Well, I'd rather underclock it to avoid any damage than to run the risk of it overheat and potentially damage my comp.

anyway, I'd bought a new external HD, Western Digital - My Book Essential 1TB External Hard Drive, from best buy.  I heard some good and bad stuff about it, so hoping it won't break down on me (hope I don't jinx anything).  I'm actually quite fond of WD, btw.
I'd actually had a 750GB External HD, also a Western Digital.  it's great, but I'd almost been filling it up alot recently. I'd have to burn many files to disc.
I just bought the 1TB today and am currently moving all of my files from the 750GB to the 1TB, then give the old one to my sis cuz she needs it.

Chose this model because I'm pushed for room, and not needing to feed the paper through the top, means it can just go in a shelf.  :twothumbs
Problem is, the fuckin' paper comes out slightly crooked, and therefore prints crooked..

Prints fine if I feed it through the top though.

Went from having 2x 500GB HDs for storage to 2x 1TB drives.  Space was really getting tight, so it helps a lot.
Also replaced my 80GB OS hard drive with one of the 500GB I replaced.

Parts to my new computer that just shipped.  Going to be using the sound card and hard drives from my current computer.

COOLER MASTER HAF 932 Black Steel ATX Full Tower Case (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811119160))
GIGABYTE GA-EX58-UD4P LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813128374))
Intel Core i7-950 Bloomfield 3.06GHz LGA 1366 Quad-Core Processor (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16819115211))
G.SKILL 6GB DDR3 DDR3 1600 Triple Channel Memory (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820231225))
EVGA GeForce GTX 285 1GB Video Card (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16814130480))
COOLER MASTER 700W Power Supply (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16817171037))
SAMSUNG DVD Burner Black SATA (Link (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16827151188))

Came out to just under $1500 with the combo deals NewEgg was doing with some of them, and even more savings to come once I do the mail in rebates.  I also got a free copy of Call of Duty: World at War with that video card.  Not bad for putting me up towards the top end again coming from parts in my current computer that range from 3-5 years old.  A lot of the newer games my computer just can't handle, and a bit further back I still need to turn all the settings down to their lower end which makes them look like a Playstation 1 game.  This should be a breath of fresh air e_e

I was getting sick of how my Motorola Bluetooth headset kept dangling on my ear like it was going to fall off, so I got this.
http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9114/n5291164avc6.jpg (http://img396.imageshack.us/img396/9114/n5291164avc6.jpg)

The ear bud fits nice and securely/snugly in my ear, so the lack of an "over the ear" hook doesn't look like it's going to be an issue. It was on sale, so even after I bought the optional 3-year warranty I only spent about $60. :thumbsup
Long story short, a few months ago this one took a surprise/unintentional bath. I've been planning on getting a new one, however for multiple reasons I just haven't gotten to it.

Well, today school was let out an hour early, and for once I was actually able to finish up my shit and leave at a decently early time. So with the provincial government here set to pass a law banning the use of cell phones while driving, I grabbed one of these: (http://us.jawbone.com/product_landing.aspx)

But as it was the last one they had, they had to pack it up, even after 10 minutes searching it turns out they used the wrong box!

I hate it when the shop packs a device in the wrong box resulting in you installing the wrong drivers and you think its because its warning about Windows7 its the problem  :banghead: You install Vista and it still fails :banghead: then you see you have have drivers for the a-m version of the device, but you actually have the n-z version :banghead:
Windows7 detected that it was a n-z version but as it could not find drivers in windows update I had to use the setup disk.

:banghead: Re-installed Windows 7 used the correct drivers downloaded from the site and everything is working now :cow:

Its the Vista version: C2Q 8300 @ 2.5GHz, 6GB RAM 750GB HD and nVidea G210.
Meaing: It was cheaper at 500 euro then the W7 version (which is 600 euro with 4GB RAM), but you need to order the W7 upgrade.

I was going for the W7 but this is what they had in stock, no problem: I have enough W7 licences anyway because of the beta testing I participated in.

Thin, lightweight (182g) and a nice 800x480 5" screen.
Mainly for music playing and some video, but as its android: internet browsing looks not to bad either.

One problem with the video: for AC3 (used a lot in  720p MKV's) I would need to by the HD package... not going to happen now.
Seems it can do dual OS (e.g. there is a Linux distrbution also) might try that just for kicks.

Doing an upgrade for my Dell Inspiron 1420 laptop I got a couple years back.  Has discreet graphics, Intel Core 2 duo and all that, so it's not that bad.  Just that it only has 2GB of RAM.

Now: 2x1GB DDR2 333Mhz CAS Latency 5
After: 2x2GB DDR2 667Mhz CAS Latency 4

Twice the memory and twice the speed.  Should help a lot, cause I'd say that's the one weak point of the laptop for most things.

Got this earlier this week.
Got myself a new mouse. Buttons on the old one were getting twiggy (sometimes unresponsive, other times uber sensitive).

Logitech M500 (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/mice/devices/5743)

My reason for getting a corded mouse instead of a cordless one was simple, since I was buying this for my desktop rig at home, I didn't need it to be portable. Added benefit is that I don't have to waste money buying batteries the way that you have to with cordless mice.

This one's from today.
Bought a new t-shirt on eBay, it arrived today.  There should be a couple of people here who'd get the reference. :P

Just bought two new 2TB hard drives from Newegg.  They were only $90 each thanks to a promo special that was going on earlier this week.  Besides being twice the capacity of the drives I have now, they're also about 40% faster on read/writes.

Samsung Spinpoint F4 HD204UI (http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822152245)

But now I have to spent hours transferring everything over to them.  Just in the nick of time though, cause both of my 1TB drives were less than 100GB from being full.

Just keeping it simple, scored me a ASUS Eee Transformer (16GB and without the keyboard for now):

Lets see if this can replace a small laptop (if I finally get my hands on the keyboard part) remote desktop is really the only reason I still use a laptop.

Got me a wireless keyboard/mouse combo that was on sale last weekend.

Even though I prefer recent Microsoft keyboards, the one I really wanted was only available in an expensive bundle and I couldn't pass up a good deal, plus the Logitech unifying receiver was too attractive to ignore considering the trackball mouse I want (http://www.logitech.com/en-us/mice-pointers/trackballs/devices/7365).

I actually bought that trackball mouse first, but upon deciding to get this bundle I chose to give the included mouse a try for a while and returned the trackball with plans to come back to it later should a better deal come along.

Great choice for a keyboard.  I have that same keyboard except it's on a USB cable (it was actually one of the last ones they had in stock before they stuck with selling the wireless version).  I would say that my most recent purchase was back in March when I replaced my somewhat dead Best Data Radeon HD 5770 (it can't survive a minute of 3D activities like gaming and benchmarking without major graphics corruption) with an MSI Radeon HD 6870 Twin Frozr II.  It's a good thing I bought this card since my Viewsonic VX1935wm monitor had died after 4.5 years and was given one of my brother's Acer H233H monitors (needed an extra power to render 1080p).  After seeing some of the memory stick deals from Black Friday, I plan to get myself a pair of 4 GB sticks if the prices are still good (I wouldn't have to worry about out-of-stock issues or a huge line of people).

1.5 TB Seagate FreeAgent Goflex USB External Hard Drive... for 70$ CAN!! Down from 140$.

Since I got it for so cheap... it makes it hard to buy a Thunderbolt adapter for 100$ :(

Still selling for $50 at most stores that carry it, I got it on sale for $40 during a random visit to Fry's today. The unifying receiver has proven its usefulness too: installation was a simple matter of running the detection software and flicking the mouse's power switch; no need to physically plug/unplug anything. :twothumbs

Now if only Logitech can bring out a headset and Xbox 360-style gamepad that both use the unifying software.

Sharp LC-40F5 (http://www.sharp.co.jp/aquos/lineup/f5/40f5/spec.html#title81)

Not big, but bigger enough for my apartment, and is bigger than watching tv on my 24inch monitor.
