Zhang Ziyi's Next Film Will Be Snow Flower and the Secret Fan

Though Zhang Ziyi (or Ziyi Zhang depending on who you talk to) is a huge star in the Chinese box office, her starpower in the United States is still growing. After finding a wide audience as a villainous vixen in Rush Hour 2, and critical and awards acclaim with Memoirs of a Geisha, THR reports she has found her next English language film Snow Flower and the Secret Fan. Wayne Wang will be directing from a script he co-wrote with Michael Ray, set in 19th century remote China, which revolves around the lifelong friendship of Lily and Snow Flower and their imprisonment by rigid cultural codes of conduct for women.

Zhang is also producing the film which is not only Wang's first film to be shot in China, but also the first in partnership with Wendi Murdoch, the China-born wife of News Corp. chairman and CEO Rupert Murdoch. Though Wang has worked with Asian themes before with The Joy Luck Club, more recently he has worked on light romantic comedies such as Maid in Manhattan and The Last Holiday. Though I'm not the biggest fan of Asian cinema in general, I think it'll be a nice departure for Wang, who can take a break from making mindless studio junk. And at the risk of sounding chauvinistic, at least Zhang Ziyi is very easy on the eyes.

Aaron Kwok, Zhang Ziyi to play AIDS couple in film
English.news.cn   2010-04-01 14:07:29

BEIJING, April. 1 -- Zhang Ziyi and Hong Kong actor Aaron Kwok will play a couple suffering from AIDS in director Gu Changwei's first-ever feature film tackling the issue, entitled "The Era of Magic."

Aaron Kwok was spotted on the set in Beijing Tuesday with a bearded and weary look, the Beijing News reports.

The film, adapted from a novel, tells a tragic love story between two AIDS-afflicted lovers. Kwok plays a primary school teacher who is sent from the city to teach in the countryside, but contracts AIDS and develops a crush on Zhang Ziyi's character, also an AIDS patient.

Director Gu Changwei insists Zhang Ziyi as the right actress for the lead, despite her recent embroilment in a slew of scandals about her personal life and alleged donation fraud.

Gu thinks the internationally famous Zhang will ensure a box office cache for the upcoming film.

Reportedly, award-winning actress Jiang Wenli, wife of director Gu, was cast in a supporting role.

Other big names joining the cast for very little pay include Pu Cunxin, Cai Guoqing, Li Xuejian and Li Danyang - all ambassadors of an anti-AIDS public campaign, the paper says, citing unnamed sources.

Is Ziyi back on the market?

Quote
The love saga of China's fave screen darling has taken another turn.

Rumours surfaced last month that Zhang Ziyi's fiancé, Vivi Nevo, is a hardcore online gaming fanatic and even dabbles in web dating.

Now, it seems something got brewing between him and an unknown girl online to the extent he has broken off his engagement with actress Ziyi.

Several netizens have claimed that the Israeli multi-millionaire is in love with a fellow forum user.

Vivi and Ziyi, who were first spotted as an item in Jan 2007, confirmed their engagement in July the following year, but have repeatedly delayed their wedding multiple times last year.

The low-profile Vivi is a venture capitalist by occupation and a major shareholder in media giant Time Warner, while Ziyi is known for her international appeal, having acted in Chinese, Hong Kong, Korean, Japanese and Hollywood movies.

Let me see if I got this right? Sucessfull billionaire wants to break off his relationship with smoking hot, successful, critically acclaimed and renowned actress with..a girl he met on an online forum? It would be hilarious if he was trolled by some guy pretending to be this girl.

Having suffered a series of negative issues recently, Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi will return to the silver screen in a 100-million-dollar 3D film "Hua Mulan", Mtime.com reports.

On top of playing the main character, Zhang will also serve as the producer of the film. The lead actor has been confirmed as Taiwan pop singer Lee-Hom Wang, who speaks fluent English.

The film will start shooting in October, as collaboration with Disney. It was originally set to be directed by Hong Kong director Johnny To, but the project was delayed for some time due to financial problems and he departed. Finally brought on board to direct was Chuck Russell, the man behind such bona fide classics as "The Mask", "The Blob" and "The Scorpion King".

Disney previously filmed "Mulan" as a cartoon in 1998, which subsequently took in 120 million US dollars at the box office.

Chinese actress Zhang Ziyi has been named image ambassador by the China Red Ribbon Foundation (CRRF), an organization working to prevent HIV/AIDS, Sina.com.cn reports.

The actress appeared Sunday (August 8) with 100 AIDS orphans at an event in Beijing to help launch a summer camp co-organized by CRRF for the children.

The children came from Sichuan and Henan provinces.

Zhang has recently finished shooting her role in Gu Changwei's new film "A Tale of Magic", about an HIV-impacted village.

"I am honored to be involved in this campaign for the prevention of HIV/AIDS, and thanks to the movie 'A Tale of Magic', I had the chance to get to know AIDS patients," Zhang was quoted as saying.

She also shared a story of an HIV-infected boy, who is also an actor in "A Tale of Magic" and gradually became optimistic during the filming process. Zhang said she was happy to see the child's changes which made her believe in the importance of helping people affected by HIV/AIDS.
