"Kobayashi Yoshinori is a mangaka who is an open AKB48 fan, and frequently engages in a more academic study of AKB48 and its fans. Here he talks about the (false) equivalence of votes and popularity, which the Japanese mainstream media has been speaking about.

On a Sunday morning television, they were talking about how many of the votes cast for Mayuyu in the Senbatsu Sousenkyo (SSK from here on) were cast by Chinese fans, and if we take those out of the equation, Sashihara would be #1.

When you consider the truth of the SSK, it’s illogical right from the start.

It has never been a democracy where one person votes once.

One person spending 1 million, 2 million, no, 10 million. They even employ part-timers to cast their votes, these fat wota.

The AKB48 SSK borders on the absurd, an election where old, rich men cast votes to elevate their members into the top ranks.

Those votes .. sure they might be their form of love, but it’s not real popularity!

If we’re talking about real popularity, this will only happen with a system of one person per vote.

If that is the case, then we can consider this - the ‘Mayuyu’ call from the audience in the stadium, the moment she was determined to be #1 - to be the ultimate evidence of popular will.

As a test, they should do a vote with one person casting one vote. Because Mayuyu will be #1, anyway.

For anyone that says NMB is pitiable, this is really because they lack the fat wota contingent.

For those members that did not make it in the ranks, if it’s a proper election there will definitely be girls that do make it in in the end.

The SSK is an illusion created from the power of money, so there is no need for the unranked girls to be discouraged.

If the fat wota disappear, your rank falls, if they notice you, your rank goes up.

That is the AKB SSK.

That’s why I’ve never seen the point of making predictions. I prefer the ‘Janken’ senbatsu, and the Akimoto Yasushi senbatsu is the real one, according to the Theory of AKB48.

The AKB SSK should be enjoyed the same way one enjoys Pro Wrestling.

It’s not a reflection of the truth.

In any case, Mayuyu’s immense popularity in Taiwan, and Singapore coupled with the fact that she has enough power to establish a Greater East-Asia Idol Co-Prosperity Sphere. This is amazing!"
