Title: Team Fortress 2
Post by: LaJon on September 24, 2007, 06:30:36 AM
Anyone else been playing this since it's beta release with the orange box?  It's about the most fun I've ever had playing a first person shooter game, and it's only getting better by the day as I learn the maps and classes. <3

I PLAY THIS!!! IT'S THE GREATEST GAME SINCE LIKE THE FIRST ONE! lol

Been playing it every night!

I like playing soldier mostly but I also go medic whenever there isn't any on the team.

I'd love to play on a server with you LaJon but my ping would be like 300 T_T

Been playing it every night, (as eyeballcancer) if anyone else in Australia plays, add me to your Steam friends.

Added.  Lol yeah, I'd be down for it though.  TF2 is the kinda game that I could play at 300 ping and still have fun.  Don't know if the people in the server would appreciate someone with that kinda ping though.

Soldier for me too.  I've spent way too many years in Quake games to waste my talents at rocket predictions  :D

haha you wanna play? I'll hop on now.
Actually there's been a few ppl with high pings play ok, if you're lucky you might only sit on 200 or so which isn't too bad.
See you in there

I'll be down for playing sometime later tonight maybe.  I've been zonked out pretty bad lately from the meds I'm taking since getting my wisdom teeth pulled recently, so I haven't actually been playing as much as I'd like to. x_x

Ahh that sucks, actually that reminds I need to get my wisdom teeth looked at one of these days.

Anyway I'll try get on as soon as I get home from work.

With half of my computer's memory broken, I can't test this yet :(

What are the major changes from the original (QuakeWorld) Team Fortress? Or if you haven't played that, from the Team Fortress Classic (Half-Life). I heard that there's no more grenades? Is there still classic maps like 2fort5r and Well6 ?

Title: Re: Team Fortress 2
Post by: LaJon on September 25, 2007, 08:31:10 PM
Yeah it still has some classic maps.

There are no more grenades unless you're a demo

Scouts have a powerful sawed-off shotgun and can do double-jumps, no more caltrops either.

Medics channel heals to players and as they do so gain an "uber charge".  If they fill up their uber charge bar, they can make themselves and the person they've been channeling heals to invincible for like 10 seconds or so. You also have a "syringe gun" as your main source of attack when it does come down to defending yourself, but you're mainly just keeping everyone alive.

HWG is pretty much the same

Soldiers are pretty much the same, but they hold a LOT more rockets now.  You pretty much never run out of ammo before you die

Engineers are pretty much the same, but can now build teleports as well so that you're able to cut travel time and all that.

Demos are pretty much the same with the whole normal grenades + nades you can detonate with the press of a button.

Pyro is pretty much the same

Sniper's don't have to hold down their fire button to bring out the laser sight anymore.  When you press the zoom button, it shows up as a weak dot through your scope and gains strength depending on how long you're in zoom.  When it reaches 100% power, your shot is the strongest.

Spies probably have the biggest change from their original.  They can disguise themselves still, but they can also cloak themselves for a short time (invisible + dropping disguise to allow you to move at normal speed) to actually get behind enemy lines and sneak up on people even better.  Backstab is still the main deal, but what's nice is that you also have sapper charges you can put on the items that engineers build that will cause them to explode.

I think that's about it as far as classes go.  Correct me if I'm wrong though. o.o

I'm going to be getting it for Xbox 360 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Orange_Box), so I'm not going to get it for computer and ruin my thoughts about the controls. XD

Sweet, didn't know you guys played; I totally need more peeps to play TF2 with ^^  Steam friend thing goes by account name right?  Mine should be gattsu, I'll add you two (ebc and LaJon) so we can light up some newbs.  I change my actual nick around, currently it's t3h s0ggy, but I'll change it to Sukebei so you'll hopefully accept my invite =p.  Oh and to clear up something I was misled by, for anyone who's played TFC and hasn't yet tried this:  When they say only demo's have grenades, they are referring to the demo's nade launcher.  All handheld grenades are completely gone (and it's way better that way too).

I've just got myself a torrent of TF2 but it said the gameinfo.txt file was missing and closed itself...I got the said file from the t'Internet but it doesn't seem to have done much good. It doesn't say the file is missing anymore but instead it just runs the Valve logo screen then a couple of seconds into the loading screen it switches itself off, any ideas what the problem could be?

I've never fooled around with bootleg Steam games before, so I don't have a clue as how they operate.  Just buy the Orange Box

I will actually take a look at how much it is if I can get this damn thinking working and it's worth it. I think I'm pretty much stuck at the mo because a couple of other people with the official game also have the same problem and so far itlooks as though nobody's found a solution. It says I need DX8 but I have version 9...how bizarre.

It's 44.95 if you pre-purchase before oct. 11th (i think), and you get to start playing TF2 right away.  I bought it just for TF2 and I think it's totally worth it, best mulitplayer FPS since TFC lol.

Definitely best game out at the moment and it's only beta :D

I keep telling everyone I see to buy it. Even if it's the only software they ever buy I think the orange box is the best deal.

I joined LaJon in a US server for a bit today hehe the ping was pretty bad, I was not doing so well at first but I kept at it and pulled in some points as a medic.

haha of all cool things you can do in this game I think they'll probably be fixing this one pretty fast

I'm sure most of the regular players have seen the heavy do gunrunning before?

Copy/Paste from fpsbanana.com cause I'm too lazy to type it out.

Quote
Basically what you have to do is:

1. Empty the gun of its ammo, and at the end keep the barrel spinning with left click.

2. Let go of left click, then press it again.. dont wait too long between clicks otherwise the bug wont work.

3. If you have done this right you should be holding your gun down and be running about, now hold down right mouse button so the barrel spins.

4. Go to the ammmo/medi cupboard and refill your ammo, now keep the right mouse button pressed and just tap left mouse when you need to fire.

Have you ever played a first person shooter on PC before? You might want to get used to using a keyboard and mouse. Seriously I dunno how people manage to use console controllers for FPS games. (unless it's Halo where the game movement is so slow it's easy to hit people)

The idea of the Team Fortress is pretty basic actually, if you're on the red team, shoot the blue guys, and if you're on the blue team, shoot the red guys.
All the while doing that, depending on what the map type is, usually have to capture the control points or if it's 2fort you have to capture the enemy intelligence (like capture the flag).
To do this you have to work as a team (or if you're a rambo style gamer go at it yourself, this sometimes works well if all the other players suck :D ).

The best thing to do is to watch other people play and do what they do.
The easiest class is to just go as a medic and just heal people lots with your heal gun thingo.

If you have any specific questions, just ask them here. Otherwise it's just a matter of trying things out.

I always shoot the wrong guys, lulz, even though they're color coded.  I've been playing 2fort all the time and just following the arrow.  I usually just run in and.. die by a turret because I'm stupid.  Hahah.

I feel bad asking questions in game because I'm such a noob and people don't seem to help anyway.  XD  I've been using the Scout because he has the pistol and that seems to be the most effective for my noob self.

lol, well at least you're trying. I guess just keep playing it and try all the different classes.

To be honest though the scout's pistol is not quite a good weapon to use. Actually being scout can be quite difficult because they're very weak but many of the skilled players use them because of their speed and the scattergun is extremely powerful at close range and the baseball bat is handy too.

Actually, do the xbox players play on the same servers as the PC players? and do you have a Steam ID?

I don't know if they do, but I don't have a Steam ID.  Haven't tried any Steam games before this one and haven't tried it on the PC yet, so yeah.

The first time I played I tried using Pyro but I didn't get many kills with that.  I kept trying to use the shotgun the same as on Gears, and it just doesn't work that way.  I'm kind of intimidated by classes like Medic and Engineer because they're not the same as just "run and gun" the offensive classes.
Title: Re: Team Fortress 2
Post by: ebc on October 14, 2007, 08:11:04 AM
Yeah medic's usually don't go out killing the enemy. Medics just heal people, and they get points whenever the person they're healing kills someone. Whenever someone goes as the heavy guy he usually doesn't get very far unless he has a medic to heal him.
As for the engineer, I've only ever used that class once and I failed XD so I don't know much about being engineer, but medic is easy just run along behind people with your heal gun, healing them.

Pyro's are good for running into a room with lots of people and just flaming as many people as possible. This creates a lot of chaos and while you might not get the kills straight away. You usually weaken everyone lots for other players to kill them quicker. 2 pyro's is even better :D

I think that maybe one of your mistakes is that you're using the secondary weapon too much. The secondary weapon is usually weak and you only use it when you run out of ammo or you're in a situation where you need to fire off a quick shot to kill someone. Otherwise whichever class you go as. Try to focus on using their primary weapon. (ie for pyro don't use the shotgun use your flamethrower, but it will only work up close)

If you do think you want to get the game for PC, check what specs you have and what the minimum requirements are. I'd say you'll want a decent videocard first.

My brother appears to be really really good at the Engineer, I tried and didn't know what to do.

Also I tried to do the medic, but I was in private chat so I couldn't talk to my teammates and they kept trying to shoot me, thinking I was a spy.  I just shot my healing gun at them in response, haha.  I think I did better as a medic, but then the round went into sudden death and I was the last one.. and I was screwed.  ;____;

Yeah, I tend to use the shotgun on every game no matter whether it's weak or not, simple because I'm in "Gears" mode.  Other weapons scare me...

I think my graphics card kinda sucks, it's a Radeon 128mb, I doubt it'd be able to handle it...

I got the game yesterday and I've been playing it non-stop whenever I have some free time and having a blast at it.  I loved TFClassic but it was more of a casual game for me... but this will definitely be my new love for a long time.
Im glad how they went with the cartoon-ish theme... the expression and emotions of the characters are hilarious!

Well I got it today and it doesn't run whatsoever, I'm not gonna bother going through the process of trying to get you guys to help me get it working because I've tried of stuff and trust me IT DOESN'T WORK lol. My only concern is that I won't be able to return the game as the key has been activated...hmmm, not very good considering I spent £33 on it. I may just go to the shop again and tell them it's unopened...bought it as a present but they already had it, that kind of thing.

What are the specs of your computer?

There's a lot of reasons why it won't run because it is quite a new game. Are you able to run just Halflife 2?
Title: Re: Team Fortress 2
Post by: redux on October 20, 2007, 02:09:08 PM
Heheh, trust me it's good neough to run it...2ghz processor, 1gb RAM and a hard drive with over 100GB free to name just a few things. It's not even the graphics card as it runs games with higher requirements than that so...As for being able to run Half-Life 2, nah it just freaks out the whole computer. Oh well, I'm actually just about to return it now, if they don't let me though I'l go to the Gamestation in my hometown instead and say I bought it as a present and that whoever I bought it for already had it. To say I'm pissed off wouldbe a slight understatement considering I've checked out pretty much everything that could be wrong with it and still no dice.

i was a huge fan of the first Team Fortress Classic. I loved the game so much.
I have 2 quesitons:
1. Will this be on a console (so i can avoid buying a second laptop or a new desktop)
2. Does this game require half-life 2?
sorry if they are really dumb questions.

1) the orange box also comes in Xbox 360 and PS3 version, so if you own the new gen console then you can play it
2) I don't think it requires half-life 2, but pretty sure it you will need to install Steam first before you can play (for the PC version at least)

now whether you can play MMO between the 3 systems I don't know

Thanks JTRIX you went a little above what I asked and I appreciate it. I haven't decided yet to get a PS3 or Xbox 360 I think I'll just stick with a Wii, and get and save up for a new laptop.. then in a few months, I'll get a japanese ps3 or xbox IF i end up in japan.

Why would you sell yourself short like that though, if thousands of other people are able to play the game why can't you?

Update all your videocard and soundcard drivers. What error message do you get when you try run the game?

The reason I'm trying to help is because the game is WORTH trying to get running no matter what the problem may be. And you haven't tried everything until you do get it working. :p

I got recruited into a clan  O0
We played another clan last night, I seriously was expecting to get owned but we kicked their ass!
It was the first time we'd all played together but we played really well as a team. The other guys need to work on their team skills.
We had 2 excellent medics who were actually topping the scoreboard followed by the heavy and the spy. Then a bunch of soldiers (I was soldier) and demomen.
I can't wait to go up against an oldschool team though cause I really wanna learn some strategies from a good team and I think that'd be the best way to learn.

Yeah, I usually do play medic in public servers cause nobody else wants to go medic XD and I know how crucial they are to the team so I always do it. But yeah we already had two medics in the clan and I was happy to be able to go a class that I have more fun playing as :p

Yeah, I used to switch classes around depending on what the team needed the most in pubs.  Then I realized that players in public servers are idiots, and are usually just frag whoring rather than trying to win.  So now I just play whatever I want to and try to have fun.

I saw that you were in that match the other night ebc, I was hoping I could spectate the game hehe.  I'm taking it it's an Australian based clan though right?  I still have fun playing on the aussie servers with you and lithium but I'm wondering how much it's affecting my game...then again, it's a lot more fun than just playing in random pubs.  I'm not at the point where I can say I've mastered any particular class, but I'm confident that I would be an asset to a clan  :pimp:

I think you do pretty damn good with the 250 ping, I had serious trouble playing as anything but medic when I joined the US servers lol.

I'll be away for the next 2 weeks though so you's won't see me on till I get back FROM CHINA! lol yeah I'm going to China for 2 weeks on a tour (no not a TF2 tour lol, just holiday but TF2 tour? hell yeah maybe one day hahaha), should be fun. See you guys when I get back o/

Well when it comes to clans I've seriously always been like "meh".

I'm really finally getting the hang of the game.  I've been point leader most of the time but I think tha'ts because I don't restrict myself to one class.  On the xbox there's always like TONS of noobs who think they're going ot be good snipers or spies right away but then they suck ass. :[

Definately more entertaining than CS. Love the fact that there's actual strategy involved now.

Well, I was slaughtering the noobs and I was practically a noob myself (only rented the game a few times) so I don't doubt that.  But I'm sure head shots and stuff would be easier with the mouse, especially for precise clicking so I'm not even sure that they would want to merge the servers.  XD;

This is one of my strats for defending point B of gravelpit lol I thought I'd share it here

The clan wars are 8vs8 which actually makes defending quite difficult. So on gravelpit which is the map where there is points A, B and C and you have to capture A and B before C unlocks and you can cap it for the win. We usually focus all our defence on B at first because it's difficult to take and A is more difficult to defend against so we just let them have it.

When attacking we try to organise 4 medics, 2 soldiers and 2 pyro's the medics are crucial because staying alive in this game is what gets the win. Usually the soldiers will uber up the medics at start and then depending on if there is a hard to get SG we will use the ubers on the soldiers otherwise we use the ubers on the pyros to get best results when capping a point.

This game is driving me nuts. Team shuffling should happen a lot more. In other news, I've been rocking Pyro and loving it. I spend more time air blasting guys than setting them on fire, but I'll be damned if that isn't awesome. All these new weapons & related are killing me, though. Not sure if I'll play too much more, now.

I had to buy the boots. I feel kinda dirty about  buying fake digital boots for a character in a computer game with £. But they look good and finally my spy is complete.

I've noticed the sapper goes up ranks quicker than the other stranges.

Revolver kills: 212
Kunai kills: 4,477
Deaths feined: 946
Buildings sapped: 30

POST #2222 GOES TO TEAM FORTRESS 2

In honor of the recent Pyro updates (and because he's essentially my main class; I've played him the most and tend to do my best as him) let's enjoy these awesome performance/tribute videos, including some with the legendary Don Newman!

"The Flying Pyro" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OMY612lQ0nI#ws)"Professor Gentleman" (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QKtl02gvaEs#ws)
Don Newman Presents: The Magic of Television (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9b2ykUTXFIQ#ws)Don Newman Presents: Parliamentary Supremacy (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bhdZgD7Burg#ws)

Glad to see "Meet the Pyro" is officially (and finally) done, though the concept seems a bit cliché. I prefer the fan-made one from last year:
Team Fortress 2: Meet the Pyro (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PjEzzwf8kTs#ws)

This week is the first time I've played TF2 in a long while, but I'll probably be sticking around for a bit with all this new stuff going around.

I just finished the Mann Up tour of duty. My prize:

The missions on Decoy were... hard barely begins to describe them. Even with a group of good players it was a bit of a challenge. Still, it was fun to do... once.

And with this, I'm going back to regular TF2. This was draining. :deco:

I'm still playing this game after all these years! I actually tend to be on and off, but this past year I've been playing more because of a newer computer and a Steam Controller.

This year's casual mode drama hasn't affected me too much since I mostly play on community servers...if anything, it's benefitted me because some servers I bookmarked years ago and seemingly died out have been seeing more activity since the update. I'm usually on the Skial, Top Notch, and No Heroes payload servers.

Somehow Engineer became my most played and most successful class (less reliance on twitch reflexes and perfect aim, more about picking spots and maintaining awareness), but the small and speedy Scout is my favorite actual character so I've recently been putting more time into playing Scout...except it hasn't gone as well as I'd hope (too many early deaths and unexpected missed shots ).

Perhaps someday I'll have the guts and patience to give Spy more playing time...
